Waka @ The Oberoi, Dubai
There are endless reasons to love Latin America; from the vivacious people to the rich culture along with its exotic and flavourful cuisine. And the newly opened Waka has brought a pivotal piece of Latin America to Dubai - complete with a menu of amazing dishes, infused with a creative culinary twist. Derived from the word ‘huaca’ which means ‘blessed’, Waka is the perfect space to enjoy a taste of Latin culture. From the vibrant decoration on the floors to the artwork adorning the walls, you can tell every detail has been carefully curated. Under the expert direction of Executive Chef, Roberto Segura, the bespoke menu is a fusion of Latin American flavours combined with Japanese seasonings, using French techniques. We started with the Wakamole nachos with avocado, onion, chili, lime served Waka style in a smoking stone bowl! The Veggie Makis with spring onion, carrot, leek, mango, chili sauce and the Abura Tuna Maki with prawn tempura, avocado, sesame sauce. Next up were the Tacos and we opted for the Crispy Tuna Tuna tartare with avocado, chives, aji Amarillo and the Beef Barbacoa with pulled beef, pico de gallo, guajillo. The mains included Josper Anticuchos - meats, chicken or veggies slow cooked in the Josper oven on skewers. We chose the mushrooms with honey, rocoto, ají www.connector.ae
panca, thyme, pistachio and the Black Angus Tenderloin with Ají panca and beer marinade, roasted potatoes, choclo, spicy rocoto dip. From the Chifa Wok style dishes (a fusion of classic Peruvian ingredients with traditional Cantonese elements) we chose the Lomo Saltado Beef tenderloin, yellow potato, onion, soy sauce. And from Waka’s Signature dishes the Pollo A La Brasa with roasted baby chicken, crispy potatoes and the Merluza Negra Quinoa risotto, ají amarillo, truffle, wild mushrooms. To say the food is amazing does not actually do it justice, the flavours are simply fabulous and each dish was as good as or even better than the last which is rare. The atmosphere is fantastic, the resident saxophonist plays in impressive sync with the DJ and every table is enjoying themselves. And though it was busy you could still keep up the conversation. Top tip: if you chose the Merluza Negra Quinoa risotto order two or be prepared to share! Call 04-4441455. CONNECTOR JUNE | 33

Taste the mix and correct seasoning if needed, keep chilled in the fridge. Basil bisque (must be made in advance) 500g crab shells (chopped into inch square sized pieces) 100ml olive oil 50g tomato paste 1500ml water ½ bunch of basil (stalks and leaves separated) 75g crème fraiche Heat a deep pan with the olive oil inside, when the oil starts to smoke add the crab shells being very careful of the oil spitting and splashing. Roast the shells until the browning begins, then add tomato paste and cook out for no more than 30 seconds, add the water and basil stalks then simmer for 1 hour. Strain the stock, then reduce on a medium heat until almost a syrup, whisk in the crème fraiche, tear the basil leaves, add them to the pan and bring up to the boil again, infuse for 5 minutes then strain the bisque and cool. Very finely slice the cabbage leaves into long thin strips and then deep fry until the bubbling stops, remove and place onto a tray with absorbent paper and season with a little salt while there is still a little oil coating the outside that it can stick to. Keep in a warm dry place until needed. To serve, (using a room temperature bowl). Pour a little basil bisque in the bowl, then using a small steel ring or cutter place a little of the dressed crab inside and gently push flat to make a level surface then take a heaped spoon of the crispy seaweed and place on top. Eat and enjoy! www.connector.ae

Luxe living rooms
Just as the name implies, the living room is easily one of the most important rooms in our homes and they are usually first in our minds when it comes to decorating a new home. At the same time, they need to be one of the most versatile spaces in your home as they take on a number of different roles, which can make getting the design or décor right a little bit more challenging. For some of us, the living room is a more formal space reserved primarily for entertaining. For others, it’s a very casual space where we can kick back and relax. Living rooms typically have lots of seating, there’s usually at least one sofa, a chair or two and maybe a comfy foot stool. But it’s not just about the chairs, a complete living room requires tables, bookshelves and other pieces of furniture - all working together to bring the space together and give it a stylish look. So, whether it’s a complete overhaul or a quick change, spice up the family’s favourite room this season with these top tips.
Arranging the furniture There are certain issues that always come up when trying to arrange living room furniture. Think about creating conversation areas to determine a focal point, the best size and shape rug that will work in the space. Light it up Living room lighting serves a dual purpose: it works as a light source, but also as a decorative accessory. So, it’s important to have a variety of lighting that not just accommodates whatever you are doing the room, but also looks great in the space. Rug it Wall-to-wall carpet isn’t nearly as popular as it used to be, in fact nearly all of us in Dubai do not have carpets. Carpets are now traded for rugs, particularly in the living room as they are more practical. And a great rug can add a stylish look to Koket the room. Al Huzaifa

Summer Camp Special
Why summer camp is great for kids! If you have been to camp, you won’t be surprised to hear about the benefits of summer camps. Studies have shown that camps can be a positive environment for youth development and valuable life skills can be learnt. Experiencing life at camp yourself as a child, you know the positive effects that still matter to you as an adult, and you also know that you want the same thing for your own kids.
I
f you didn’t go to camp as a child, you may not realise how good the experience is for children and you may not understand why so many parents are committed to sending their kids. So, here is a list of the most important reasons to send your kids to camp. 1. They spend their days being physically active - rather than sitting inside camp gives them a reason to move. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that kids aged from five to 17
www.connector.ae
should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity, physical activity daily. It may seem like fun and games but camp offers kids the opportunity to get healthy without even realising it. 2. Camp helps build self-confidence and allows them to experience success and become more confident. It can help children build self-confidence and self-esteem as it removes the academic, athletic and social competition that shapes their lives at school. Offering plenty of opportunities to succeed and lots of noncompetitive activities camps can be a real boost for your kids. 3. Camp can help conquer fears. The nurturing environment and encouragement they receive makes it the perfect place to endure setbacks, try new (and occasionally scary) things and learn that improvement and fear conquering comes with giving things another try. 4. Unplug from technology. When kids take a break from the TV, mobile phones and
CONNECTOR JUNE | 53
Summer Camp Special the Internet, they rediscover their creative powers and engage the real world. 5. Develop life-long skills. Camps provide the right instruction, equipment and facilities for kids to enhance their skills in every area. The sheer variety of activities offered makes it easy for them to discover and develop what they like to do. 6. Grow more independent. Camp helps kids to develop who they are, to practice their decision-making skills without a parent, guardian or teacher guiding them. Okay, so they may not be making huge decisions but even small choices help give them the freedom to blossom. 7. Have free time for unstructured play. Free from overly-structured, overlyscheduled routines of home and school, camp gives children the much-needed free time to just play.
8. Learn social skills and build teamwork skills. Going to camp, even just for short time, means joining a close-knit community everyone must agree to cooperate and respect each other. One of the major benefits of camps is the social skills that develop and often even the shyest child can learn how to interact with others in a positive way.
SUMMER SPECIALS This Summer let your child engage in an experience that will prepare him for the future. Our Summer programs are tailor made to fit your child’s needs. 9. Make new friends. Camp is a great place to make new friends. Free from the social expectations pressuring them at school, camp encourages kids to relax and make friends easily as camps draw kids together. 10. How to lead. Camps can teach children how to be leaders through everyday play and experiences. Learning how to lead essentially teaches them how to be a good citizen, a valuable life skill in today’s society.

Kids & education
Baby care basics
Cecile de Scally talks us through some of the most important aspects of baby care during the first 12 months. 0 to 3 months Feeding Feeding is the number one topic most midwives get asked about in the early days and it’s worth attending a prenatal class so you know what to expect. If you are breastfeeding then make sure baby is attaching well and you don’t feel any discomfort, you should never accept pain while feeding - always see a breastfeeding specialist if you need more help. You need to focus on your own nutritional needs as well as this can have a significant impact on milk supply. Remember to eat well and use “the rule of 3s” - 3 main meals; 3 smaller meals; 3 snacks; 3 litres of water - spread out over 24 hours. If you choose to bottle feed, or if this is medically advised due to a health issue, then do not feel ashamed, the most important thing is that your baby is getting the nutrition they need. Get advice on sterilising and the correct amounts of formula as these things can seem daunting at first. Weight Have your baby weighed weekly for the first six weeks (using the same scales) to make sure they are on track. All babies will lose weight initially (up to 10% of their birth weight) and should start to regain weight in the first two to three weeks. Then 58 | JUNE CONNECTOR
on average they should then gain between 26 to 31g per day. Growth spurts are normal and babies can want to feed up to every hour - these are normally on day 7, 10 and 14 (lasting a day) and again around 3, 7 and 11 weeks (lasting three to four days). Bathing There is no need to bathe baby daily initially. When you do, be prepared and have everything ready, turn off any cold drafts and even warm the bathroom with a little steam. Start the bath with cold water first and then add hot water to warm it to a pleasant touch. Fill the bath so that baby can be easily covered to their underarms but make sure you still feel comfortable holding them. Don’t use any products for the first four to six weeks as their skin is very sensitive, and if you do wish to use something every now again, ensure that it’s not highly perfumed and has been approved for babies. When you take them from the bath, cover them immediately and pat dry ensuring you pay attention to all the small spaces, e.g. between the toes and under arms. 3 to 6 months Sleep If you have not started implementing the ‘good habits’ now is a great time to start. #connectordubai
1. Establish a feeding pattern of around every three hours. 2. Watch for happy awake time to end, usually around 90 minutes including a feed. 3. Aim for up to four hours of sleep for baby during the day. 4. Establish bedtime, feed bath feed bed by latest 8pm. 5. Dream feed - pick up the baby just before your bedtime (around 11pm), feed and change diaper. 6. During the night let them wake you and aim to start removing this feed (you may need expert help as it very much depends on the child). 7. Don’t expect baby to sleep through for 12 hours a night until around 8-9 months. Stimulation and play Babies need to start tummy time around four weeks and build up to doing approximately 20 minutes, four times a day. This is important for core muscle strengthening, holding their heads and being able to chew and swallow when they are ready to start solids. Encourage them to reach for and pull on objects to develop handmouth co-ordination, while picking up smaller objects encourages the pincer grip for fine motor skill development. Placing toys out of reach but within eye sight starts to encourage rolling over. 6 to 9 months Weaning and nutrition We encourage exclusive milk feeding until six months but a lot of parents will choose to begin earlier on the advice of their doctor. There is no right or wrong way to wean your child but we recommend you do a first aid course before starting to wean. Most of all you should enjoy watching your child discover flavours and textures, and relax and remember if it’s not messy you’re doing something wrong! General tips include: • Introduce one new food every few days • Start small and build up the quantity www.connector.ae
• Keep a record of likes and dislikes • Introduce new foods early in the day so if there is a reaction you can respond easily • Watch for reactions and if they are severe, consult a doctor immediately • Fruit juices (unless prepared fresh), nuts and honey, cow’s milk and egg whites should be avoided during the first year. 9 to 12 months Baby proofing The best advice is to sit on the floor and look around at what your child can see or reach up to. Then either move it higher or secure whatever cannot be changed, like plugs point, sharp corners and free standing furniture such as bookcases. The cot level needs to be dropped to the lowest height so they cannot climb over and no string or cords should be attached to the cot sides, no toys with any length of cord should be left in the cot ever. Do not use cot bumpers unless they are rebreathable material and soft as children will often stand on the bumper and climb over, whereas, if it is soft it will collapse under their weight. In the kitchen, a gate may be needed to keep your little one safe on the other side. Secure drawers and give your child a drawer they can go into, with plastic containers that fit into each other as this is a great way to indulge curiosity. Teach them about hot stoves and have the latest in protectors fitted over the oven door, cover the stove knobs and fit a guard to prevent pulling on pot handles. Lock toilet seats and put protectors over hot taps in the bathroom. Assume all products for the kitchen or bathrooms are harmful and therefore, they should be properly labelled and locked away. Even products you use on your skin, shampoos etc, should never be beyond reach. Tablets and bottles of medication must as well be labelled and dated when they were opened and placed in a locked cabinet. Cecile de Scally is Lead Midwife Educator at Malaak. Malaak Mamma Mornings run every Thursday between 9 to 11am with weigh ins and guest speakers. www.malaak.me

Before
SculpSure @ Dr Simin Medical Centre I’m often asked which treatments are best for getting rid of stubborn fatty deposits, and how to achieve a slimmer physique. No matter how hard we train in the gym, cycle round Al Qudra or do laps in the pool, we all have fatty areas that are just not going to shift. So when I heard about SculpSure, the Revolutionary Body Contouring Procedure, I just had to try it out - all in the name of research of course! SculpSure’s 25 minute sessions are a quick, non-surgical way to rid yourself of fatty areas. It is the world’s first FDAcleared laser treatment, and works to eliminate the fat on the abdomen, thighs and other areas. What’s involved? My part was quite simple! After a consultation with the specialist who diagnosed the areas that I was struggling with, a belt with laser wands attached was strapped to me, and I lay back and relaxed. The machine feels as if its blowing hot and cold and I experienced a slight tingling sensation. Initially I found it a little warm and asked for the strength to be turned down slightly. But all in all it was painless with no downtime. 62 | JUNE CONNECTOR

After 12 weeks
The treatment works by raising the temperature of the fat cells, so it essentially damages the cells’ structural integrity. Then, over the next three months, the damaged cells are processed and naturally eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system. Combined with a healthy diet and exercise regime, it stops both the regeneration of the original fat cells, and the generation of new fat cells. What are the results? The results can be seen as quickly as six weeks, and optimal results are typically seen at 12 weeks. Dr Simin’s Medical Centre combine the treatment with two sessions of VelaShape in between your SculpSure sessions to help with the drainage of the damaged fat cells, which ensures great results. Two sessions and 12 weeks later I can definitely say I look more toned and the fat has reduced. My jeans feel looser and I have managed to lose a couple of kilos in the process. Fab result! How much? Skin cancer
- what you need to know Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. It is estimated that nearly 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day, making it the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer among women and men. Connector spoke to some of Dubai’s leading dermatologists to find out more.
Which is the most common form of skin cancer? “The most common skin cancer is the Basal Cell Carcinoma, in fact, this type of cancer is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers,” says Dr Juliane Reuter, German board certified dermatologist at Koster Clinic. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, agrees dermatologist Dr Lana Kashlan. She adds that squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common and malignant melanoma, the deadliest form, is the third most common. “About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are related to sun exposure,” states Dr Kashlan.
64 | JUNE CONNECTOR
Which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer? “Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer as it can be deadly if left untreated. Melanoma originates from the cells that produce pigment in the skin and often resemble moles or can appear within existing moles,” says Dr Kashlan. Dr Reuter adds that the most dangerous skin cancer is malignant melanoma as it may spread to other body parts at later stages. How important is it to wear sunscreen in Dubai? Wearing sunscreen is important to prevent sunburn as well as to counteract UV-induced skin ageing says Dr Reuter. “However, a proper balance of sun exposure with sunscreen and limited sun exposure without sunscreen (dependant on the skin type) is advisable as the UVB radiation is necessary for our skin to produce Vitamin D, which is vital for mind and body health”. Dr Kashlan says “Daily sunscreen use is critically important in Dubai, where the amount and intensity of sun exposure is quite high for the majority of the year. Not only is sunscreen important in terms of preventing skin cancer, but also we know that sun’s harmful rays directly cause wrinkling and ageing of the skin”. What are the best factors/types to choose? “I generally recommend using a daily sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or better,” says Dr Kashlan. “SPF or sun protection factor is a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here’s how it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer. The higher SPF’s block out more of the sun’s harmful rays, thus preventing sunburn and skin damage. The other important thing to consider when picking a sunscreen is to choose one labelled ‘Broad Spectrum’. This means that the sunscreen blocks out UVB and UVA radiation. UVB causes more superficial damage to the skin, leading to sunburns and skin cancer. #connectordubai
UVA penetrates the skin deeper and leads to sun related wrinkles and ageing and also can contribute to skin cancer development”. The best would be a water-resistant, broadspectrum sunscreen covering UVB as well as UVA radiation says Dr Reuter. “The best factor, that suits most skin types, is factor 30 as it filters 96% of the UV radiation”. Is there a right or wrong way to apply sunscreen? “Sunscreen has to be applied preferably before leaving the house as it takes 30 minutes for most sunscreens to display their full protective properties. It has to be reapplied every 40 to 80 minutes in a generous coating,” says Dr Reuter. “The biggest mistakes people make when applying sunscreen are not using enough and not re-applying. The key to getting adequate sun protection is to make sure to apply enough sunscreen to cover the whole exposed area (one ounce or one shot-glass full) and to re-apply every two hours you’re out and immediately after swimming,” says Dr Kashlan. What other problems can not wearing sunscreen cause? “UVA radiation causes chronic skin damage and premature skin ageing with signs such as wrinkles and dark or white spots,” says Dr Reuter. She added “Besides skin cancer prevention, daily sunscreen use is the most effective anti-ageing cream available,” says Dr Kashlan. “Brown spots, sagging of the skin, and wrinkles can all be related to the harmful effects of sun exposure and so regular sunscreen use helps to prevent early ageing of the skin and keeps skin looking healthy”. Low levels in Vitamin D are prevalent in this part of the world. Is there a time where we could be out in the sun and not wearing sunscreen? “The optimal time to be in the sun to maximise vitamin D production is as near to noon time as possible (between 10am and 2pm). But we are talking about as little as a few minutes depending on the individual skin type! The closer to noon time, the shorter the necessary exposure time to produce vitamin www.connector.ae
D because UVB rays are most intense at this time. Pale skin will reach an “equilibrium point” after 10 to 20 minutes of exposure to UVB light, at which point vitamin D will no longer be produced. A light-skinned person needs at least three of these 10 to 20 minute sessions per week, in bright noon sunlight and with few clothes in order to maintain a healthy Vitamin D level. In darker skin it can take two to six times longer (or up to an hour or two), to reach the ‘equilibrium point’ depending on the amount of skin pigmentation,” says Dr Reuter. What signs can we be looking out for in order to protect ourselves? During direct sun exposure if the skin shows a very light shade of pink, it is about time to stop the sun exposure in order to prevent sunburn says Dr Reuter. Getting to know our own skin is vital to recognise potentially cancerous changes on the skin she added. And when should we go to a doctor? “A dermatologist should be consulted if moles are noticed that display any sort of activity (changes in colour, size or shape), if any non-healing or chronically scaling, rough skin changes appear. “The earlier skin cancer is detected, the better the healing chances are,” says Dr Reuter. Dr Kashlan says “For non-melanoma skin cancers, be on the lookout for pink, rough sores or bumps that do not heal. These spots can often first appear as scaly spots that feel like sandpaper. For melanoma, we recommend looking for moles that have Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameters greater than 6mm, and are Evolving, meaning they have changed. This is referred to as the ABCDE’s of melanoma. But even more important, is to be on the lookout for anything that is new or changing or doesn’t look like the rest of the moles on your body. I recommend doing a monthly self-check of your skin. The more familiar you are with what you have on your skin, the earlier you will detect anything that is new or changing. Finally, anything that is bleeding, scaling, or not healing needs to be checked by a dermatologist”. CONNECTOR JUNE | 65

Top 5 most popular plastic surgeries
There are so many different types of plastic surgeries being offered for the face, body and skin. But what are the most popular procedures? According to data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons nearly 1.8 million surgical cosmetic procedures and about 15.5 million minimally invasive ones were performed in the US in 2016. Here were the top five most popular‌ Breast augmentation (290,467 procedures, up 4% from 2015) Liposuction (235,237 procedures, up 6% from 2015) Nose reshaping (223,018 procedures, up 2% from 2015) Eyelid surgery (209,020 procedures, up 2% from 2015) Facelifts (131,106 procedures, up 4% from 2015) Breast Augmentation Women seek breast augmentations for a variety of reasons. Among the most common is to increase volume and fullness after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Based on your body type, skin elasticity and desired size, your plastic surgeon will decide whether to use saline or silicone implants. In addition to breast implants, other common breast surgeries include breast lift, breast reconstruction and breast reduction. 66 | JUNE CONNECTOR
#connectordubai
Dr Goran Jovanovic, Specialist - Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery, says “the most common type of breast augmentation is performed using silicone implants. Breast augmentations are more requested by women with congenitally small breasts”. “The most common type of breast augmentation I do is the inframammary one, where a small wound, placed below the breast, is used to introduce the silicone implant. I believe this method gives the least scar visibility,” says Dr Dany Kayle, Specialist Plastic Surgery, at Dr Kayle Aesthetic Clinic. “Ladies are advised to have one week of rest after the operation. The pain is usually the first 2 to 3 days, then it starts to go down the following few days; so by the end of the first week, she feels comfortable to resume her regular activities except for sports, which she is allowed to resume after 4weeks,” says Dr Kayle. Liposuction No matter how fit someone is or how many tummy crunches and leg lifts they do, sometimes there are trouble spots that just will not reduce. For stubborn areas such as the thighs, arms, hips, chin, back, to name a few, liposuction may be an option. Liposuction is performed by making small incisions in the skin and then using a small cannula to dislodge or vacuum the fat until the desired results are achieved. The final results can be seen once the initial swelling subsides. The most commonly requested areas for liposuction are the abdomen and flanks (or love handles) says Dr Jovanovic. He added “Liposuction is usually very effective at removing fat deposits; improvement in the body contour is usually noticeable right after surgery”. “Most common area is the tummy and the flanks, and this is a common request for both, ladies and men. It is quite effective, especially when done by an experienced plastic surgeon. It is the best method to remove unwanted fat and regain www.connector.ae
harmonious body contour. That is why, it has to be done with art,” says Dr Kayle. “The modern method of liposuction is very atraumatic says with minimal if any, bruising and discomfort. Majority of my patients drive after 48 to 72 hours and return to work in 3 to 5 days’ time. I ensure they return to exercise in 7 to 10 days and full activity within 3 to 4 weeks,” says Dr Sanjay Parashar. Nose reshaping Rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping”, changes the shape and the proportions of your nose enhancing facial harmony. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose. Dr Parashar has noticed a rise in requests for nose job in recent years, he said “I have seen a sudden increase in rhinoplasty. In 2010 I performed 25 rhinoplasties in 2016 it reached to 83 in a year”. Dr Jovanovic says that social media can play a huge role on the decision of the individual to have it done. “The procedure is different from patient to patient” says Dr Jovanovic “the shape of the tip of the nose has a tremendous influence on the overall appearance of the nose. However, the doctor technique and specialty is always the key to the procedure”. Dr Kayle has also noticed a rise in requests in recent years “indeed it did rise the same just as plastic surgery procedures in general. Of course social media has an important role in this. People are spending so much time on social media these days, and a lot of information and news is shared there, especially those related to beauty in general, as well as celebrities and their look,” says Dr Kayle. “The main work is on the structures below the skin, namely the nasal cartilages and bones. Re-shaping these internal structures will reflect on the external look of the nose. All this will CONNECTOR JUNE | 67
Health & fitness be achieved via wounds placed inside the nostrils with nothing showing on the outside,” says Dr Kayle. Adding that two weeks’ recovery will be needed but not for pain. “It is just because there will be a dressing covering the nose to give it support for two weeks until proper healing is achieved. After that, the dressing is removed and the patient can resume normal social life,” said Dr Kayle. Eyelid surgery Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is performed to improve undereye bags, lose skin on the eyelids, excess wrinkles, puffiness and give the area around the eye a more youthful appearance. During the procedure, incisions are made in areas that can be well-concealed, such as below the lower lash line and hidden inside the lower eyelid. After incision, excess skin is removed and the muscles are tightened. “Eyelid surgery is performed in people with droopy eyelids, excess skin in upper eyelids, large fat bags, excessive wrinkles under the lower eyelids. Ageing signs around the eyes are first to appear and can make a person looking very tired despite the freshness in people,” says Dr Parashar. “Upper blepharoplasty is the most common procedure where people desire to remove excess skin and get rid of lazy eyes appearance. It is simple and safe procedure that gives a significant freshness to a person. Lower blepharoplasty involves removing fat bags, tightening of skin and muscles and correction of dark circle. Men and women around 45 years of age desire it the most,” adds Dr Parashar. The procedure is very common says Dr Kayle. “It is needed to remove excess skin and fat that accumulate over the eyelids as we grow older. Consequently, this procedure is quite helpful in reversing the signs of ageing. It can be for the upper eyelid alone, the lower eyelid alone, or for 68 | JUNE CONNECTOR
both combined. Patients are instructed that they might need around 10 days for the bruises to fade,” says Dr Kayle. Facelift As we age, the skin on our face tends to sag, fold and wrinkle. When this happens, creases appear below the lower lids, fat may become displaced and a loss of muscle tone often results in excess skin under the chin. During a facelift procedure, incisions are made at the hairline and behind the ears. Skin is then re-draped and fat re-sculpted until the desired result is achieved. “With a facelift a decision of the doctor can play a main role,” says Dr Jovanovic “facelifts can be broken down into different categories from a mini facelift to a complete rhytidectomy. With most facelift that I have done there #connectordubai
can be an additional of one or 2 other combined procedures. A facelift reduces wrinkles and sagging skin on the face and neck caused by ageing or weight loss. The procedure removes excess skin, tightens the underlying muscles, and redrapes the skin in a higher position. The results go beyond what can be expected”. Dr Kayle says the effects are dependent on the extent of the intervention needed. “Depending on the case, if a full facelift is needed, then we are talking about a major procedure done under general anaesthesia. However, sometimes, only a mini-facelift is needed and this is a simple procedure done under local anaesthesia. In addition, sometimes, simple lifting using just threads under local anaesthesia at the clinic can give excellent results in the hands of an www.connector.ae
experienced plastic surgeon. So, it all depends on the initial problem. When the right procedure is done for right case, excellent results are expected”. He added that the recovery time is about “10 to 14 days for a full facelift, one week for a mini-facelift, and 2 to 3 days for facelift using threads”. Dr Parashar adds that “Medical facelift or no-scar facelift is performed using injectables. This is also called as volume lift. This is suitable for younger patients who have lost a lot of weight or elderly patient with not much muscles and skin excess. A facelift can also be performed using threads or strings that actually works as antigravity support. Six to 8 threads are strategically placed on each side of the face to support the skin and reduce sagging”. CONNECTOR JUNE | 69

38smiles motto is “Helping the strays of today become the pets of tomorrow”. 38smiles, like most of the rescue groups in UAE, does not have a shelter and relies on support from the public with fundraising, fostering and volunteering. One of the ways to get involved is by becoming a foster parent. Foster homes are incredibly important, as they provide safe and loving temporary homes for rescued animals until they find forever homes. By offering your time, energy and home to an animal in need, you help rehabilitate, socialise 74 | JUNE CONNECTOR
and prepare the animal for adoption into a forever home. 38smiles do not believe in keeping animals in boarding where they are stuck in tiny cages and can only take a new rescue under their care if a foster home is available, so every new foster home is an opportunity for a stray animal to be rescued and given a chance to be someone’s pet.
