EDITOR’S NOTE The summer is well and truly upon on us and schools close for a long summer break in just one months time. For those of us spending the summer months in Dubai, we are already thinking about what to do to keep our youngsters away from hours with iPads and avoid the words “I’m bored”. We have rounded up a number of different summer camps to give you some ideas of what is out there for kids of all ages and interests. Choosing the right school for your child is important and the quality of education is at the top of every parents list. For over 10 years Dubai’s KHDA has assessed schools annually to give independent reports on what to expect. The reports are very in depth and in this issue we explain what they mean to parents, why they are important and what parents should look out for. The summer is a time when a lot of us take the opportunity to visit different parts of this beautiful world we live in, see the sights and try the different foods. Europe is as popular a destination as any and the different flavours you can experience are all available in Dubai. Whether you are visiting a European county this summer or not, you can enjoy the foods and tastes of Europe with our guide to some of Dubai’s hot European restaurants. Are you feeling lucky this month? Then why not have a go at entering our competitions. All the details are on pages 64 and 65, and to enter you simply need to visit our website, which you can do even right now from the mobile phone next to you. There’s lots more for you and your family in this issue, hope you enjoy it and have a great month!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DUBAI?
Here at Connector, we love our city and know you do too! We asked our readers to share their favourite things, best experiences and happiest times with us. Here are some of our favourite responses. Nancy Maaloof from Lebanon said: "I enjoy seeing the love and respect shown towards the leaders of this land, something you don’t see in a lot of countries. Here it is not just Emiratis that show respect to the Royal Family, but also expats from all backgrounds. Respect for the opportunities available to us." Simon Clarke from United Kingdom said: "The growing arts scene is something I am really enjoying in Dubai right now. I have been a resident for over 20 years and the last few years I have been able to experience more diverse works of art from different artists, local and international. Facilities such as Alserkal Avenue and Jameel Arts Centre have done a great job in showcasing great art."
Janice Mendoza from Philpines said: "I just love seeing fireworks and where I come from we only ever see them once or twice a year, but in the UAE they are more often and the displays are always amazing. And with Eid coming now I am looking forward to seeing the skies all lit up and colourful at night." Sonya Fernandes from India said: “My favorite part of Dubai is the fish market in the Deira area. I always used to go to the the old one to get fresh fish and now the new one is much better, with plenty more choice and a lot more to do as well in the new mall at Waterfront Market.

FLAVOURS OF EUROPE
A food voyage
through Europe
E urope may be one of the smallest continents of the world, but when it comes to its culinary heritage, this part of the world has given people across the globe foods that they cannot live without. Be it pasta, pizza, crepes, a number of cheeses specially mozzarella, salads, fondue, roasts, steak, cutlets and an array of puddings, there is a lot this world owes to this continent for what we eat today. European cuisine is very commonly referred to as ‘Western Cuisine’, for having its influences on non-indigenous cuisines of the Americas, Oceania, and Southern Africa, which derive substantial influence from European settlers in those regions. This cuisine has literally crossed continents and has left a significant mark across the globe. In Dubai, one thing we love is the easy access to traditional global cuisines and it goes without saying that we have no dearth of European cuisine restaurants as well. From traditional Italian, French, German to English, Spanish, Greek and www.connector.ae

THE REVIEW
Netsu at Mandarin Oriental
M andarin Oriental’s first hotel in the Middle East opened its doors in February this year, bringing with it some additional luxurious dining options to Jumeirah and Dubai in general. One of these new offerings is Netsu a Japanese restaurant from Chef Ross Shonhan. Netsu really makes an impact as soon as you walk in when you spot the centrepiece that is the Warayaki grill which features 900°C flames that reach two metres high. The grill represents a traditional Japanese cooking style where meats, especially tuna, were cooked over straw fires to sear effectively on the outside and leave a rare centre. The menu is very extensive with a whole range of dishes including sashimi, sushi, tempura and, being a Japanese steakhouse, some appetising selections of beef. To simplify our choice we opted for the 5 course signature tasting menu which features 4 courses of 3 different dishes per course and finishing off with a dessert platter. The portions were perfectly sized to give you a decent taste of as many dishes as www.connector.ae
possible. Some of the stand out dishes were the Korean Fried Chicken with a slightly spicy and sesame seed coating, the soft shell crab maki roll which were stuffed full with the tasty crab and a succulent piece of spicy miso sea bass. If you are a fan of beef then you won’t be left disappointed with the tasting menu, which included wagyu beef gyoza and a very generous portion of wagyu beef short rib. Presentation of all the dishes was excellent, even down to the dessert platter at the end, served on a dry ice effect with a good selection of fruit, yoghurt sorbet, chocolate fondant, strawberry cheesecake and an absolutely amazing ginger and date pudding. Netsu is a bit on the expensive side, which should not really surprise anyone and does not mean it isn’t worth it. The food, setting and experience make it somewhere to consider for a special occasion with a group of friends or even just the two of you. Signature tasting menu is Dhs 550 per person not including drinks. Call 04-7772232. CONNECTOR JUNE 33
KIDS & EDUCATION
KHDA reports
and what they mean
S ince 2008 when the first Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) report was published until 2019, eleven years have witnessed a remarkable change in the education sector of the UAE. Coming from an independent reputable regulatory authority for education, the report measures school performance and gives out an unbiased picture that raises the standards of education and sheds light on a school’s strengths, weaknesses, and success stories while giving a wide-ranging point of view. Fatma Belrehif, CEO of Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) says, “School inspections continue to play a vital role in meeting the aspirations of Dubai and ensuring progress in achieving our national goals. Today, more students than ever study in ‘good’ or better schools and this has only been made possible by the consistent effort of our schools to action inspection findings 34 JUNE CONNECTOR
and further improve education provisions.” “Dubai now has a well-established school inspection culture that encourages families to seek better quality education and schools to continue making progress. This is evident from the improvements in inspection quality standards - with nine out of 10 schools improving in one or more quality indicators.” “Dubai is now home to 119 schools that offer a 'good' or better quality education - compared to only 38 in 2008. A total of 11 new schools that were inspected for the first time this year, seven have received a ‘good’ rating. We expect new schools to make progress in students’ attainment in Islamic education and Arabic over the coming years.” What is a KHDA report? KHDA annually publishes the individual inspection reports for all private schools in Dubai. This is a public record of how #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION each school is progressing towards the expectations of Dubai for its schools. It covers leadership, quality of teaching and learning, inclusion, curriculum design, how well schools assess students' progress and the academic outcomes when compared with national and international standards. It also judges students' safety, personal development and their cultural awareness. Schools' outcomes are judged on 6 quality levels, - Outstanding/ Very Good/Good/ Acceptable/ Weak and Very Weak. Schools are expected to improve continuously and to reach an expected level of Good overall, at a minimum. What parameters are schools evaluated on to be outstanding, good, and so on? Schools are inspected for their overall performance against set criteria. These include the quality of leadership, the progress all groups of students make in the key subjects, the quality of teaching for effective learning and how well the school knows itself - self-evaluation. The overall judgment is made across the six quality levels given the judgements in the above aspects in the 6 quality levels. How should parents read these reports and what should they be looking out for? When parents read a report they should focus on the first sections. There they will find a summary report by KHDA on how the school is progressing from www.connector.ae
its recommendations last year, how well students academic and personal development outcomes have improved and how the various stakeholders work together. Parents will also find attainment and progress reports for the key subjects. This is a record of how students perform against curriculum standards, depending on the school's licensed curriculum, the progress made by students in each phase of the school in these subjects, Kindergarten/ Primary/Secondary/ High School along with the quality of the teaching observed during the inspection. They will also find commentary on the effectiveness of leadership and how governors hold leaders accountable for improvement. Later in the report parents will find the technical recommendations made by inspectors for the school to improve. What do the KHDA reports mean to schools? Education experts from Dubai shed a light on how these inspection reports encourage schools and lay a roadmap for them to achieve excellence in the field that in turn improves the overall education quality in the UAE. Act as for mirror and road map Christopher Bromham, Principal of Uptown School says, “The KHDA inspection report, alongside the inspection itself, acts as both a mirror and a road map. The mirror reflects CONNECTOR JUNE 35
KIDS & EDUCATION the progress and achievements that the school has made in the past twelve months. The whole process is predicated on our own self-evaluation and the inspection report helps us to standardise our evaluations against those made across the UAE. The road maps help us to look ahead and plan future improvements and developments. Usually, these match with already identified priorities but the perspective of a critical friend is highly valued. Key document use as a cornerstone Naveed Iqbal, Executive Principal of Creative Science Schools Dubai says“ It is a key document schools use as a cornerstone to drive all improvements underpinned by their own school’s vision and mission. At ISCS Al Sheba, the report represents an essential guide in our journey towards achieving the “outstanding” rating. Having already obtained “Good”, we will continuously use the report as a check point to ensure we are always on the right track to reach the highest ranking given. We are proud to say ISCS Al Sheba has been rated “Outstanding” in its first ever inspection in safeguarding, health, and safety proving that are moving in the right direction.” A check on education reputation Gabbitas Education Adviser Sophie Oakes says, “The KHDA inspection reports are an important part of the reputation of the education system in Dubai. They provide a preliminary benchmark for parents considering which school to choose for their 36 JUNE CONNECTOR
child. However, they don't tell the whole picture. The inspection reports are based on specific criteria set by the KHDA and not all schools adhere to those particular set of values. Lots of parents definitely value a league table solution to picking a school but it is important to dig deeper and find out more about those schools" How are the KHDA reports beneficial for the education system in Dubai? Bringing all schools across the emirate on one platform, the KHDA reports not only unify the education system but also prompt all schools to work together to achieve a collective goal towards improving quality education in Dubai. Drive up standard of education in Dubai Christopher Bromham of Uptown School says, “There is no doubt that the DSIB inspection process has driven up standards in education in Dubai over the last ten years or so. Schools now have a clear definition of high calibre schooling and a critical friend to help them set next steps. Initiatives such as What Works have also helped schools to learn from each other and to form partnerships to raise student outcomes across the emirate.” Demonstrates a transparent approach of the Dubai education system Naveed Iqbal of Creative Science Schools Dubai says, “A major component of Dubai’s KHDA report is to help bring parity across all schools in the UAE. It provides the #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION comprehensive criteria expected of each school to further build and improve upon the quality of education at all levels. More importantly, it allows schools to collaborate with each other as a wider community, to learn from peers with the unified mission to continuously elevate the standards of education in the UAE. Having a report published annually demonstrates the transparent approach of Dubai and its drive to improve the education system every year bolstering continuous innovation and development within Dubai’s education sector.” How are KHDA reports beneficial for parents and students? Gives parents a yardstick to measure schools performance Not every parent or student want the same thing from a school. Some look for schools that shine bright in sports and some look for schools that do extremely well in arts and languages. KHDA reports therefore make it easier for parents to choose a school that is most suitable for their specific needs. KHDA rates schools under different criteria making it convenient for parents to analyse the strongest points of any school. Gabbitas Education Adviser Sophie Oakes says,” Students definitely take pride in going to an Outstanding school and the schools in turn like to shout about it. It can certainly be good for student morale if a school gains a higher KHDA rating.” www.connector.ae
2019 KHDA reports in brief In 2019, the Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) inspected a total of 176 private schools, of which 18 schools have improved their rating this year. Four schools have moved from ‘very good’ to ‘outstanding’, five from ‘good’ to ‘very good’, six from ‘acceptable’ to ‘good’ and three from ‘weak’ to ‘acceptable’. Schools that have moved from Very Good to Outstanding are Jumeirah English Speaking School, Horizon English School, Dubai English Speaking School and Kings’ School Al Barsha Schools that have moved from Good to Very Good are Raffles International School - Umm Suqeim South, Regent International School, Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba, Sunmarke School, and Ranches Primary School Schools that have moved from Acceptable to Good are Al Ittihad Private School, Sharjah American International Private School, Bilva Indian School, Amled School, Dovecote Green Primary School, and Swiss International Scientific School. You're Here For A Reason by Nancy Tillman Age group: 5-7 years old You're here for a reason. If you think you're not, I would just say that perhaps you forgot a piece of the world that is precious and dear would surely be missing if you weren't here. Every person matters. Nationalbestselling and beloved author Nancy Tillman shows readers how each of us fits into life's big picture, and how the world would be incomplete without you in it. This book is a reminder to young and old that they matter. www.amazon.ae Dhs 58
The Batsford Book Of Chess For Children: Beginner Chess For Kid by Sabrina Chevannes Age group: 7-12 years old This cute, character-based book is a complete guide to chess for beginners. In animated language, Jess and Jamie - two kids who are obsessed with chess - explain everything you need to know, from first sitting down at the board to sneaky tricks to help you beat your opponents. The book explains who the pieces are and how they move (and that we're talking about pawns, not prawns), how to reach checkmate (or, in Jess's words, 'how to kill the king'), and the concept of the opening, middlegame and endgame. It also introduces the idea of chess etiquette - and explains why sometimes no one wins and a game ends in stalemate. The book is friendlier and more fun than the average children's chess book. www.amazon.ae Dhs 64 CONNECTOR JUNE 43

ADVISE FROM THE EXPERT-HEALTH
Basic habits for Children’s Skincare C
hildren may experience a variety of skin issues; diaper rashes, dry skin, eczemas and sunburns as their skin is more sensitive. Tips for optimal care are as follows: BATHING: - Ensure bath / shower time is short as water can be harsh for skin and can stimulate dryness / eczema. - Ensure water is warm, never hot. - Avoid soap when possible, and use only creamy, non-scented hypoallergenic ones. - Avoid using sponges or scrubs. - Ensure long baths are taken maximum once a week and add bath oil to reduce the harshness of the water on the skin. POST-BATH CARE: - Moisturize after baths / showers; when the skin is in need of a barrier replacement to prevent or reduce atopic eczema. - Choose hypoallergenic fragrance free moisturizers. SUN PROTECTION: - Use sun protection from an early age to prevent skin cancers. - Avoid using sunscreens in newborns below 6 months of age; avoid major sun exposure for them and keep them under the shade. - Use sunscreens that are physical or mineral rather than chemical, so look for the ones containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. - Use SPF that is at least 30 and the PPD at least 12 or +++. - Reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours regardless of the label stating that it stays on for several hours; that's only true if the child stays still! - Look for well-known brands and FDA approved products. There are many products in the market stating that they are MOH NO: FH64038

natural or organic but they are from unregulated sources and therefore unreliable. GENERAL ADVICE: - Use petroleum jelly (contained in Vaseline and other ointments); it is a great moisturizer, serves as a great barrier for the skin, and ideal for nappy rashes. - Avoid using make up or nail polish on your children. If you decide to do so, choose regulated products specifically made for children and ones that come off easily with water. - Use a humidifier in the room to add moisture in the air. - Visit your dermatologist for regular check-ups for yours and your children’s skin; prevention is always better than treatment! Five common children’s summer
illnesses to watch out for
T he summer season can be quite harsh in Dubai. When temperatures start to soar and humidity levels reach above 80%, we need to look after our children beyond keeping them indoors and hydrated. Almost all of us are aware of the common illnesses such as sunstroke, dehydration and heat rashes, and we are usually ready to protect our children from them. However, these are not the only ones, there are many more. As summer returns, it’s important to read and recap your knowledge on all the possible common summer illnesses among children and how we can avoid and treat them. “When summers are intense, kids are the first casualty and they soon end up with some of the commonest summer diseases. Diarrhea, cough, cold and fever, apart from www.connector.ae
sunstroke are common. However, with careful handling and precautions taken well in time, these diseases can well be avoided. A healthy and nourishing diet can also play its own important role in staving off summer type infections and diseases”, says Dr. Amarendra Prasad - Specialist Pediatrician, Zulekha Hospital Dubai. Common Children’s Summer Illnesses Swimmer’s Ear Kids are most likely to get swimmer’s ear after they spend time in the sea and pool. Sometimes water can get trapped inside the ear creating a moist environment which enhances bacterial and fungal growth. Swimmer's ear is an infection of the outer ear canal caused by these bacteria or fungi. CONNECTOR JUNE 47
HEALTH & WELLBEING Symptoms • Itchiness in the ear • Severe pain when yawning or swallowing • Trouble hearing • Fluid or pus draining out of the ear What to do Take the child to the doctor to examine the ear properly. If Swimmer’s ear is detected, the doctor will prescribe the suitable local antibiotic or antifungal ear drops. Preventive measures Dr. Riham Ammar, Consultant Pediatrician at Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “Try to prevent water from getting stuck in the ear canaldry your children’s’ ears thoroughly after swimming or showering using a towel. Wearing earplugs whilst in water may also help.” Food Poisoning And Diarrhoea Bacteria multiply faster during hotter and more humid months. When food is left out during the summer, it attracts bacteria and may result in food poisoning. Microorganisms breed in the digestive tract, leading to infection and symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting and pain in the stomach, and sometimes fever. Treatment 48 JUNE CONNECTOR
• Drink plenty of water, Ideal fluids would be electrolytes or sports drinks • Milk should be avoided until diarrhoea stops. • If the child continues to vomit, evaluation by the pediatrician or an ER would be useful. • When the child is only suffering from diarrhoea, you should avoid juices due to the high sugar load Preventive measures • Washing hands thoroughly especially before touching food • Leftover food should be kept in the fridge where it can remain fresh or just thrown away • “Reheating foods should be avoided as much as possible .Care should be taken to ingest foods soon after preparation. Eating out is another area where parents will have to be very careful”, says Dr. Noobi Koya, Specialist Pediatrician at Canadian Specialist Hospital. • “Don’t forget that most of the food becomes harmful, if exposed to the heat, even for a short time. So you have to keep the food in special containers to maintain the proper temperature, to avoid gastrointestinal disturbances, such as vomiting and diarrhoea”, Eczema And Skin Rashes Eczema is identified by an irritating skin #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING rash caused due to skin allergies that grow and spread due to the heat of the summer. Treatment • Wipe the skin when in sunshine so that no sweat builds up • Use a hypoallergenic sunscreen and a skin moisturiser on your child’s skin each day. • Let them wear cool clothing that does not irritate there skin • Use calamine lotion or cool compresses to calm itchy, irritated skin • Avoid using creams and ointments that contain petroleum or mineral oil, which can block pores further and cause more irritation. • If the child’s skin is sensitive with severe redness, skin abrasion and signs of skin infection then you should take them to the doctor for the possibility of needing a local antibiotic and hydrocortisone creams. Preventive measures Dress your kids in light clothing in order to reduce the risk of heat rash and try to avoid leaving them in hot humid areas for a long time. Drowning Drowning is the leading cause for concern for young children aged 1 to 4 years. Children are at risk of drowning in just two inches of water. Children need www.connector.ae
to be supervised no matter what their swimming skills are, so don't assume anything. Preventive measure • Make you child wear a proper life vest when they are near to water • Always supervise your children when in or around water • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Your CPR skills could save someone’s life
at greatest risk.
Sun Stroke And Heat Stroke Sudden exposure to heat can also cause sun stroke and the child suffers from high fever. Heat-related illness happens when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded. Infants and children up to 4 years of age are
Symptoms Sun stroke may cause rapid pulse, disorientation, nausea, a dry swollen tongue and dehydrated, hot skin. In extreme cases, sun stroke may cause your child to become unconscious. Treatment • Encourage your child to drink cool fluids containing sugar and salts like cold CONNECTOR JUNE 49
HEALTH & WELLBEING electrolytes • Put a cool, wet cloth or cool water on your child's skin • Call your doctor for advice. If your child is too exhausted or ill to drink, take them to hospital as treatment with intravenous (IV) fluids may be necessary. Preventive measures • Keep your kids in the shade during the heat of the day and ensure that they keep hydrated by having them drink lots of fluids • Apply the sun block cream on the body, cover their head with a hat, put a t-shirt, and keep them under the umbrella, if they are not in the water • For older children, sun block and hats are mandatory Dr. Amarendra Prasad of Zulekha Hospital Dubai shares a few tips to prevent common summer diseases among children: • Ensure that your child drinks liquids from time to time so that they do not get dehydrated. Fresh fruit juices are preferable to colas and other packaged drinks. It

would help if they carried a few of their favorite beverages with them • You and your child should maintain the highest level of hygiene and cleanliness at home and wherever else you might go • Put them on a diet of rich in fibres, water-based fruits like water melon, minerals and vegetables • Do not give them cut veggies and fruit or street food that may be spicy, cooked a long time ago and oily • Dress your child in loose and lightweight cottons. Ensure that they wear a cap when they are outdoors and use sunscreen on the exposed parts of their body • Keep your child indoors during the hottest parts of the day, i.e. 10am to 2pm • Keep your child out of crowded areas and away from the direct glare of the sun Summer is meant to be fun and filled with vacations and visiting grandparents back home, don’t let summer illnesses put a dampner on the whole jovial mood. Take these precautions to enjoy the best of the summer.

A
How to get rid of Acne
cne is one of the most visible ways that stress often manifests itself. Although stress doesn’t directly cause acne or breakout, it does act as a trigger for the factors that contribute to the development of a breakout. This happens due to stress causing higher levels of cortisol hormone that can increase inflammation and sebum production in the skin. Sebum production increases secretion of additional oils and inflammation which will clog the pores and lead to the development of bacteria and further inflammation. The mental well-being is often reflected first on the skin. Acne can be of 3 types: 1. A white head 2. A blackhead 3. A pimple (sometimes has a puss filled white top) A simple way of dealing with acne is through dietary change: There are several types of food that worsen acne and should be avoided by any acne patient. 1. Food rich in refined carbohydrates 2. Fast foods 3. Omega-6 fats in food 4. Dairy products 5. Chocolate There are other, much healthier options that keep the skin clear. For example: Omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon and walnuts), green tea, vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, and Zinc), and antioxidants. Probiotics, like in kombucha and pickles also reduce inflammation of the skin. Topical medications for acne: 1. Topical retinol: These come as a cream, gel and lotion. Retinoids are derived from vitamin A and include tretinoin www.connector.ae
(Retin-A) and adapalene (Differin). 2. Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid works by dissolving excess oil and gently exfoliating the dead skin cells, it also has antiinflammatory properties. 3. Topical antibiotics: Reduce redness and inflammation, and can be used in conjunction with retinoids. 4. Benzoyl peroxide: Is an antibacterial ingredient. 5. Glycolic acids: Exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells that can clog pores. Topical treatments are used to treat mild acne, for moderate to severe cases of acne, it is suggested that you visit your Dermatologist and get their reccomendations. There are also several therapies that can be used alone or in combination with other medications: Lasers and photodynamic therapy, chemical peel, steroid injection, and extractions of whiteheads and blackheads. Overall, the acne treatment required varies from person to person. It depends on numerous dietary and habitual practices. Dr. Amany A. Are you considering
laser hair removal
T he most modern and most effective hair removal treatment is laser hair removal where permanent hair reduction is achieved by using heat to disable the hair follicle and prevent re-growth. Common treatment areas include legs, arms, armpits, bikini line, and chin. Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses concentrated light beam (laser) to remove unwanted hair. The laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. Light energy is converted to heat which damages the hair follicle, causing the proteins in the hair and the surrounding follicle to breakdown and die. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth. Azaiba Kara, Laser Therapist, Aesthetica Clinic says, "Hair goes through 3 phases namely, Anagen (growth) phase, Catagen (resting), Telogen (falling) phase, the hair in the Anagen phase responds best to hair removal. The laser targets the melanin pigment in the hair follicle, the laser light is 52 JUNE CONNECTOR
converted into heat and the heat destroys the hair follicle." Different Type Of Laser Hair Removal Treatments There are a number of different type of laser hair removal treatments. The Diode works best on dark, coarse hair, it is not as efficient on thinner, lighter hairs. The Alexandrite has been proven to be quite effective on thinner hair more than other lasers, which makes it a great choice for areas where hair isn’t too coarse. The Nd:YAG protects a darkly pigmented epidermis by bypassing it and going straight for the hair follicle due to its deep penetration rate compared to other lasers. The Ruby laser, one of the oldest types of lasers used in hair removal, is best suited for those with light or fine hair and fair skin. Compared to the newer laser technologies, the Ruby laser can be #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING more time-consuming because it covers a smaller area of skin at a time. Dr. Myrna El Shareef, Specialist Dermatologist from Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “Laser machines can be categorised according to the wavelength of the light they emit. Different wavelengths suit different skin or hair colour. Cooling devices used with the laser also differ. Your dermatologist or certified laser therapist will recommend the best laser suited for your skin and hair type.” Laser specialist Natalia Voda at Zo Skin Centre by Zein Obagi Jumeirah Branch says, “Ideally it’s good when one machine combines 2 type of laser. Then your specialist will determine the best options for your case.” Sonia Cheibi, Laser Therapist at LaVie Clinic says, “As per LaVie clinic Alexandrite is the most sought after laser treatment in Dubai, in the last 3 years maximum patients have been asking for this particular type of laser. It has a slightly shorter wavelength than Nd:YAG. It's also got a fast repetition rate and bigger spot size, so it's perfect for targeting large patches of unwanted hair like on your legs.” Suitable Candidates For Laser Hair Removal Treatment Suitability depends on a number of factors including hair thickness, colour of the hair, age and more. However, people with thick, coarse, dark hair and light www.connector.ae
skin are the best candidates for laser hair removal. Are A Suitable Candidate Or Not? “The minimum age to start laser hair removal is 14 years old, although for hormone stability it is recommended to wait for puberty and, in case of women/ girls, menstrual cycle to begin”, says Dr. Amany A Morshed, Specialist Cosmetic Dermatologist at Aster Clinic Arabian Ranches and Aster Beauty Clinic, Warqa Azaiba Kara of Aesthetica Clinic says, "Any client who has thick dark hair on any part of the body and has reached puberty can do the treatment safely and effectively. Hair must contain some level of brown pigment (melanin) to respond to laser. Blonde, grey or red hair will not respond therefore cannot be treated. If you are currently under any medication that makes your skin sensitive to light, you cannot undergo this treatment. Hence, make sure you tell the clinic about the medicines you are taking. Excessively tanned skin from sun, sun-beds or tanning creams within the last two weeks should stay away from the treatment. Any skin disorder should be treated before the treatment One needs to have full hair growth before the first session, meaning no waxing for at least six weeks. Pregnant women should avoid going for this treatment CONNECTOR JUNE 53
HEALTH & WELLBEING “A spot test is always recommended before doing a full session, to better identify the good candidates for the specific laser. The patient should always request a spot test before the first treatment session”, says Dr. Myrna El Shareef of Mediclinic Al Sufouh. Setting Real Expectations: No, you don’t get rid of hair follicles in one treatment and it does not even guarantee 100 % hair removal. One needs at least 5 session to achieve the best result. A great hair reduction can be seen after the first session and after each session there will be lesser and lesser hair Therefore, you must clear your head of all fancy expectations and get to know the real results that one is expected to get post session or sessions in many cases. “The majority of people will receive anything from 80%+ reduction in hair growth. The hairs that remain will be soft, baby like hairs. These hairs would be targeted on subsequent top up treatments to ensure results are maintained. Hair free periods would typically last 5-6 months before these finer hairs would need to be maintained”, adds Kanta Jethwani from Bloom Aesthetic and Laser Clinic. “At LaVie Clinic we always do a skin and hair analysis before we start a treatment, based on your hair type you can expect anywhere from 4 to 10 sessions a regular 54 JUNE CONNECTOR
hair growth. A patient can start seeing results from first session itself, there is a decrease in hair growth and the cycle of growth slows down by 80% after the second session hence making your skin smooth for a longer time between sessions. The first 3 sessions are generally with a month’s gap in between however the later sessions do not need to be done frequently and sometimes you can go up to 6 months without a session. But again these are things that a specialist will discuss with you and explain you before, after and during the treatment”, says Sonia Cheibi of LaVie CliniC Possible SideEffects Of Laser Hair Removal Treatment Though the treatment is considered to be painless and very safe, if it is not done by a trained professional, there are chances that you can face possible side-effects which may include some of the following: • Risk of skin infection • Burns and blisters • Scars • Swelling of the treated area • Changes in skin colour (darker or lighter) • Eye injury • Crusting • Uncommon greying and paradoxical growth • Some discomfort or pain during the treatment #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING Therefore always seek that the laser treatment be done by a certified, trusted and experienced laser therapist. How To Prepare Laser hair removal treatment is not just another waxing session that you may just show up for. The treatment needs preparation and one should consult and get all queries answered before getting the treatment done. The most common things one needs to follow in the run up to the day include the good to go consent from the dermatologist. Dr. Myrna El Shareef of Mediclinic Al Sufouh suggests, “First the patients who wish to do laser hair removal must be cleared by their dermatologists. The dermatologist will review the patient’s medical history, medication use, and look for any history of skin disorder or scarring, and make sure that the patient does not have any contraindications to the procedure.” Also, one must stay indoors for at least six weeks prior to the first session. Plucking, waxing and electrolysis should be avoided at least four weeks before the treatment. "Refrain from waxing, tweezing, plucking or anything which pulls out the root completely, as for hair removal our main target is the root where our target melanin pigment is located", advises Azaiba Kara of Aesthetica Clinic. www.connector.ae
Shave the area that you plan to have laser hair removal treatment on the night prior to the first session. Avoid medications before the treatment “The patient should avoid taking medications or herbal supplements that would thin the blood or make them more sensitive to the sun. Always consult your dermatologist and be informed about all the benefits and possible risks before the treatment”, suggests Dr. Myrna El Shareef. Protect your eyes during the treatment. Sonia Cheibi of LaVie Clinic says “Wear the protective eyewear they provide for you - you may think you look silly, but looking a little weird for a few minutes is much better than suffering eye damage.” Once the procedure is done use the gels recommended by the dermatologist to soothe down any irritation or swelling. “Use the restorative gel provided by your Simplicity technician after treatment. You may also want to get more for a few days after the treatment to minimise redness or other irritation, speed healing and prepare skin for your next treatment”, adds Sonia Cheibi. Don’t expose the area to the sun for a week after treatment or take hot baths and showers, or sit in a sauna for one or two days after the treatment. It is a fun to live a hair-free life so read up before getting yourself under the laser. A few precautions and the right expectations can make the journey easier and smoother. CONNECTOR JUNE 55

Top yoga tips
for the summer
S omehow, it always feel like this year is hotter than last year. Heat does hamper with our nervous system and when we are out in the sun, we tend to get tired and annoyed easily. All we need to do is to understand the changes the season has brought and practice a few yoga breathing techniques to ensure the body and mind stay fit. Sheetali pranayama This breathing technique helps in keeping body cool during hot summer months. Stick your tongue out and curl it inwards towards the centre. Hold the breath for as long as you can and then slowly exhale through the nose. Repeat it five to ten times. Sheetkari pranayama It’s important to keep yourself hydrated during the summer, however besides drinking a minimum of three to five litres of water, you can also practice a breathing technique that helps in quenching thirst and keeping body 60 JUNE CONNECTOR
temperature low. However, drinking water is a must and should not be replaced with this breathing technique at all. With the mouth open, clench your teeth and press the tongue against the teeth. Breathe in through the mouth, close the mouth and then breathe out normally through the nose. Repeat it five to ten times. Pranayama This breathing technique has a cooling effect on the nervous system and boosts the energy channels. Close the right nostril with your right thumb. Exhale completely through the left nostril and then breathe in through the left nostril. Close the left nostril with your little ring finger and exhale through the right. Repeat five to ten times inhaling from the left and exhaling from the right. #connectordubai

TRIED & TESTED
Relax and de-stress with stone massage
at Queens Beauty Lounge in Marina L ocated in the heart of Dubai Marina, Queens Beauty Lounge believes in enhancing beauty using natural and organic ingredients only. The salon is quite renowned for its hair, face and nail services, and also offers tailored massage services. When we opted to review a massage at a salon, we were not very sure if we would get an experience of a professional spa facility or not. However, a 60 minute session changed our perception 360 degrees. Located very close to Damac Metro station, the salon is located in Trident Marina Scape building’s ground floor. The interior takes pride in boasting a lot of white space which makes the salon look quite airy and open. It has four treatment rooms which they use for their specialised facials and massage services. After a warm welcome at the reception, a staff member asks you to take a seat on a comfortable grey coloured lounge placed next to the reception area. As you fill in the consultation form, a staff member brings hot towels and a glass of detox water with mint leaves and a slice of lemon. 66 JUNE CONNECTOR
After you finish your welcome drink, the therapist takes you to the massage room that features a bamboo painting covering one side of the wall adding a spa vibe to the ambience. The massage room looks like any standard massage room. Explaining hot stone massage, the therapist tells us that direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist access to the deeper muscle layers. Combining hot stone with a full body massage provides a very healing and effective experience. The fully trained therapist massages the body with gentle strokes using hot stones. A 60 minute session is more than enough to rejuvenate dead tired muscles, specially if your job involves you working in front of a screen. By the end of massage, the therapist wakes us up gently and offers the same detox water to finish off the whole relaxation experience. This salon uses special organic aromatic oils for massages and generally uses Shirley Conlon Organics and French skincare brand YonKa for all other beauty services. Price Dhs 400.
