I loved last month’s issue - it was great to hear about Hotbox from Hannah. I just moved here and love yoga so will definitely be checking them out! Also, really enjoyed the beginner’s guide to running from someone who was actually out there doing it herself - very inspiring. Even motivated me to grab my running shoes, though my motivation ran out on me about 15 minutes into it! More training needed! Pippa
Sounds like me Pippa!
My husband and I found your article on making a Will here in the UAE very helpful. We have just bought a villa here in Dubai and seeing this in Connector prompted us to make arrangements to have a Will drawn up, which brings us a sense of peace of mind. Thanks Connector. Anon.
I know you usually publish summer camps for kids, but are there any children’s camps available over the Easter holidays for my two boys, as I’m unable to take time off work? Can you help? From Naomi
Sure Naomi, check out the kids’ section..
I saw Stephanie Pech’s recipes in the magazine and decided to try out the Love Mousse recipe for Valentine’s for my husband. It was so easy and totally delicious! Keep them coming. Regards, Leanne
We love Steph’s recipes too Leanne - try the sweet potato lasagna too… it’s delicious!

Founder and CEO of TeachMeNow.com
What brought you to Dubai?
I came to Dubai four years ago to set up my first education company, which is focused on creating e-learning games as apps for high school students. I created one of the first gamified apps for Economics and had thousands of global downloads. Following on from that, I got numerous global requests for tutoring. Being half Arab, my goal has always been to be a part of the growth and development in the region. It was important for me to come back to the Middle East and start something here. As a woman and a teacher, my dream is to contribute to worldwide educational reform by breaking down barriers 20 | MARCH Connector
to learning and improving how we transfer and understand knowledge.
Describe a typical day
I always start my day with coffee while I go through my checklist for the day - I love post it notes and checklists. This helps me stay on track and focused! Every week starts with a 10-minute catch up with the team. We go through a list of that week’s goals and the tasks from last week. I write my own checklist on a daily basis to help me break up my tasks and stay on target. My days vary greatly from speaking at conferences, panel discussions, client and www.connector.ae
partnership meetings to interviews and answering a full inbox of emails - which never seems to shrink! In a start-up, every day is different and things change and grow quickly. There are always new challenges, but this is part of the fun. Speaking of fun, I do love listening to jazzy or funky music when I work on my emails! I always look forward to having dinner with my husband Chris at the end of a long day, and we occasionally take tango classes or go to Bounce!, which is a great way to tune out the stress of the working week.
How did you get into this profession?
I am not sure I ever planned or thought I would end up as a tech entrepreneur, but my experiences have all shaped my direction and passion for what I do. My teaching background and desire to make an impact helped drive my curiosity to create something. I studied International Relations and Economics, and I had planned to work for the UN. Through my studies and work though, I came to realise that education is where you can make the biggest impact.
What is the best thing about your job?
As a small company, we work close together and when we have a win, it’s an amazing feeling for the whole team! Our first ever class happened between a professor in Venezuela teaching a student in Saudi Arabia, and since then we have had students as young as six learning languages; to adult learners working on improving professional skills. Learning about our students and hearing how they continue their growth is a fantastic motivator.
And the worst?
There are always challenges and opportunities when starting a company. The highs are extra high and lows feel like a punch in the stomach at first…so I prefer to focus on the wins! www.connector.ae
What was a standout moment in your career?
When we won the Global Infiniti speed pitching competition. We were shortlisted as finalists in the Dubai round and went on to win the global competition in Hong Kong. It was an intense competition with people of the highest calibre, and the total prize was a USD $40,000 cash injection, so there was a lot riding on it for us. The best part was coming back from Hong Kong with a massively oversized cheque (now proudly displayed on our wall) and seeing how excited and proud our team was.
What advice would you have for any young person wanting to get into your field?
In the tech and start-up world, there is so much opportunity for anyone regardless of their age. Focus on your passion and curiosity, keep learning and fail fast. My goal was to make an impact by making education accessible and create jobs for people around the world. Sometimes the hardest part is getting started. As Mark Twain said, “the secret of getting ahead is getting started”. Also, define the “why” in terms of what you are doing and why you are doing it, as this will motivate both you and your team to go above and beyond.
Your motto?
Never stop learning, stay passionate and curious. Connector MARCH | 21

FAQ’s
W
on divorce in UAE
hen a couple decide to get a divorce, the issue can be further complicated when they are residing in a foreign country unaware of the local laws and procedures that are applicable. The laws governing divorce here are very different to the UK for example, and are more complicated if there are children and assets involved. Below are some frequently asked questions by expatriates: 1. Where can I divorce and which law prevails? Expats have a choice of jurisdiction as to divorce proceedings through their domicile, residence or nationality. Foreign nationals can file for divorce in their home country or in the UAE. They can even divorce under their home country’s laws in the UAE so long as they are both citizens from the same foreign country. The issue becomes complicated when both parties have different nationalities. Where the husband is a national of one country and the wife another, the law of the husband would be upheld as per UAE law. In situations where the home country laws do not fully cover certain aspects of the divorce procedure, the courts here would have discretion to apply UAE law. However, when choosing jurisdiction, it is very important to seek legal advice from a licensed lawyer from the outset, as the jurisdiction in which you decide to divorce in can have a huge impact on your financial settlement, maintenance and custody of your children. 2. Where do I initiate proceedings? Once proper legal advice is sought, either party can open a file to divorce at the court stipulating their decision to dissolve the marriage. This is followed by a meeting with a conciliator at the court to ascertain if an amicable agreement can be reached or not between the parties. This is mandatory for divorce proceedings in the UAE. If a resolution cannot be reached, then the matter proceeds before the courts. 3. Is the divorce process very long in the UAE? A divorce can be concluded in approximately 28 | MARCH Connector
three months if both parties are able to reach an amicable agreement with regards to finances and arrangements for children. 4. Who will get custody of my children? It is important to note that in the UAE, parents do not share equal parental responsibility. However, the court here will always act in the best interests of the child and unless they are given a reason to believe otherwise, in this jurisdiction following a divorce the mother will become the ‘custodian’ and the father the ‘guardian’. Usually the custody of the children remains with the mother until the children reach the age of puberty. If the transfer of custody to the father is disputed after that point, the court will make a decision based on the facts of the individual case. The mother is responsible for the day to day care of the children. The father as guardian is responsible for the child’s education, medical treatment, accommodation and guiding them in terms of morals and religion. 5. As a guardian, can I visit my children? Following a divorce, a guardian can make an application to the court so that he (usually the father) can obtain visitation rights to visit his children. The guardian is entitled to visit his children regularly. Therefore, the mother as custodian of the children cannot permanently move to another country in order to deliberately prevent such contact by the father. 6. Am I able to leave the country with my children? Leaving and removing a child without the consent of the other party amounts to child abduction. This is a very sensitive situation particularly when a mother wishes to flee this jurisdiction to avoid the application of the local UAE law. Even your home country is likely to return abducted children to their country of residence. If either parent has concerns that their permission will not be sought for travel, they can obtain a ‘travel ban’ preventing the child leaving the airport. In such situations, it is prudent to speak to a lawyer about the arrangements and safeguards that can be put in place if you feel there is a potential risk of child abduction arising. NATURAL NUTRITION with Stephanie Pech
Mum is the best and breakfast in bed is a time-honoured tradition on mum’s designated day of rest and relaxation. What could be better than sleeping in a little late and having breakfast served to you by your favourite people? Kids love to prepare something special for mum, and mums love the thoughtful gesture although sometimes the meals kids choose might not be the healthiest or too complicated for their kitchen skills, no matter how much help they get from dad! So here are some easy recipes that even the smallest hands can help with or do themselves.
Fluffylicious pancake love
Now who could possibly resist a generous, fluffy pancake? This recipe is so easy and does not take much knowledge or effort at all. Let the kids get busy choosing and setting out a variety of toppings. Blueberries, bananas and coconut butter are some of my favourites and ones that my mother never complained about. Method Blend all the ingredients in a high speed blender such as JTC OmniBlend for about 60 seconds, or until you have a perfectly smooth batter. In a frying pan, heat 1-2 tsp coconut oil. Once the oil starts to shimmer, pour in the batter to make 2.5” cakes. Allow the cakes to cook in the pan until golden brown before flipping it over (you’ll see bubbles pop up when they are ready to flip). Continue cooking the rest of the cakes, adding a little more cooking fat to the pan before each new set of pancakes. Serve warm with fresh organic berries, banana slices and coconut butter (CocoYogo Ingredients Cacoa Coconut butter tastes heavenly). 2 large ripe bananas 3 eggs 2 tsp. milled flaxseed (I used Linwoods nut mix) Make mum a smoothie for breakfast that she 1 tsp. cinnamon can enjoy and stay in bed a little longer. That will ½ tsp. ground ginger give her a great start to the day. Smoothies are easy Pinch of vanilla extract to make with kids. They are packed with nutrients, fiber and other healthy stuff and there are infinite Pinch of nutmeg Pinch of salt combinations you can create. Here’s one of my

½ pound of mushrooms, thinly sliced ½ pound frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry 8 large organic free range eggs ¼ cup coconut milk (the fatty stuff at the top of the can works best) 2 tablespoons of coconut flour 1 cup of cherry tomatoes, halved 5 ounces of Prosciutto di Parma Kosher salt Freshly ground pepper A regular 12 cup muffin tin
favourites that tastes like chocolate heaven. Ingredients 1 handful of organic kale 1 frozen banana 2 tsp raw cacao 2 cups almond 1 tsp almond butter 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (I recommend plant based powders like Sunwarrior, Vega One or Lean 95) Method Blend all the above ingredients in a blender such as JTC OmniBlend for 30 seconds or until you have a smooth consistency. Serve in a tall glass and top with cacao powder and cacao nibs and don’t forget to stick a nice colourful straw in. She’ll love it!
Method Preheat the oven to 375°F. Heat a large pan and add half the coconut oil, sautéed the onions until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and mushrooms and cook until the mushroom moisture has evaporated. Seasoned with salt and pepper and set it aside. For the batter, beat the eggs in a large bowl with coconut milk, coconut flour, salt, and pepper until well-mixed. Add the sautéed mushrooms, spinach and stir to combine. Brush the remainder of the melted coconut oil onto the muffin tin and line each cup with prosciutto, making sure you cover the bottom and sides completely. Spoon in the frittata batter and top them with cherry tomatoes. Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and cooked to your liking. Well if daddy isn’t around and nobody else can help the kids, I suggest you bake these mini fritatta muffins a day in advance and have the kids serve in the morning with your favourite cup of coffee. 5 TRICKS
to avoid ironing‌

in your bathroom, then take a shower. Within ten minutes, the steam will get rid of the wrinkles, leaving you with crease-free clothing. Extra tip: This trick works even better if you shut the windows and doors in your bathroom, to keep the steam in. 2. A little water goes a long way Are the clothes you want to wear tomorrow creased? Grab your garment and spray a little water on the wrinkled patches. Hang it up for around an hour, and it will be crease free! Extra tip: Be careful not to soak your clothes - a light spritz will do. 3. Grab your straightener Okay okay, it does seem a bit like ironing. But make no mistake - this is a much faster and more efficient way to get irritating wrinkles out of your favourite clothes. Is the collar of your blouse wrinkled? The cuffs of your shirt? The hem of your dress? Grab your straightening iron and straighten them out! Extra tip: Make sure your straighteners are clean. You don’t want to end up with hair product cooked into your clothes!
T
4. Use your mattress Here is another reason to love your bed, as it can also be used to de-wrinkle your clothes. Roll the creased garment into a burrito and place it under your mattress. After an hour or so, your clothes will be crease-free and ready to wear! Smooth out any surface wrinkles when you roll up your clothes, so they do not come out with more creases! Extra tip: Clean your mattress with natural ingredients first, to avoid dust mites from getting into your clothes.
1. Use shower power Get two things done at once, with no extra effort. A great solution for creases you only notice last-minute: simply hang the garment up
5. Tumble dry tough creases Another last-minute fix. Just spray a little water on your creased clothes and pop them in the tumble dryer. After just a few minutes, they’re ready to be worn! Extra tip: take the clothes out of the dryer as soon as they are done. If you leave them in, the wrinkles will return, and it is back to square one…
he truth about ironing is that no one wants to spend a night doing it. It is time-consuming, boring, and never seems to end! In short, it is high time you put that ironing board away and embrace a more efficient way of living. Helpling.ae, the leading online platform for booking cleaners, gives us their top 5 tips to help you ditch that iron for good.

Preparing your child for an admissions assessment
S
chool assessments can be an unnerving process for both parents and your child, with assessments for a firsttime school place proving particularly nerve-wracking. It is natural to worry about how your child will cope when separated from you, or to be concerned that you have done enough to secure a place, especially when competition is high for the number of spaces available. Each school has its own procedures in place for the assessment process. While they may differ from school to school, rest assured that they all aim to offer as much support as they can to every child they admit. The actual assessment process will vary depending on the year group that you are applying for. Generally, assessments for the foundation stage are play-based, and are often conducted on a one-to-one basis. For younger children, parents are usually invited along to 46 | MARCH Connector
accompany the child or be nearby while the assessment is being carried out. This can alleviate any separation anxieties, which in turn will allow your child to feel more relaxed and be able to focus on the play-based assessment. For older children, assessments will be tailored to the specific year group, and will usually include literacy, mathematics and elements from the curriculum, as well as your child’s social skills. The best advice that I can give to parents is to try to relax (I know that this is easier said than done!). I too have been through the process of placing my children at schools in Dubai and know the stress and dilemmas that every parent faces at this time. It is important to remember that your child will pick up on your worries and this in turn may make them nervous themselves. This should be avoided if at all possible. The assessment process itself is not designed to catch children out. They should relax and try to answer any questions to the best of their abilities. Reassure them before and after the assessment no matter how well you think they may have fared - all children want to know that they have done their best, which is all that can be asked of them. Schools do understand that nerves are involved when attending an assessment and so for this reason, they also take into consideration your child’s previous school reports, if applicable. This involves looking at their attitude to learning and academic history to ensure they get a balanced overview and complete picture of your child’s potential. If you have any further questions regarding any part of the application process, do not hesitate to approach the admissions manager of the school. Their job is to guide you through the process and they should be happy to assist you with any of your concerns. The Frenemy that is
Minecraft By Heather Long Vandevoorde, Ph.D.
A
ny parent of a child over 8 years old knows the word: Minecraft, which is a game where you dig (mine) and build (craft) different kinds of three-dimensional blocks inside a world of different terrains and habitats. Time passes as you play so the light changes and you find yourself hungry, tired or running away from monsters/zombies who are trying to kill you. It is an ongoing game, with no real “winners”. There are different servers, or worlds, to move among and kids can team up and play with their friends, or strangers, sharing raw materials and building houses together. While parents know the word Minecraft, most have little idea why it consumes so much of our children’s time. We have been programmed to think that all electronic games are the enemy, but some experts say they can have positive uses and influences. Could this Minecraft revolution be a frenemy: part-enemy but also part-friend? As an IT teacher at the American International School in Abu Dhabi, Habeeb Mustafa encourages Minecraft play and says he actively uses it as part of his curriculum. How can Minecraft be a positive influence in schools? “From an educator’s perspective, I find Minecraft beneficial for my students in many ways, from engagement and enrichment of curriculum content and delivery. Many children who would not normally partake in an exercise, become suddenly enthused when Minecraft is the delivery vehicle and can develop newfound confidence and recognition among their peers.” “Minecraft is a game, yes. But it can also be used as a tool for education and unleashing the imagination. Gamification is a known phenomenon that entices learners into interacting with educational software, by embracing the same principles that attract them to video games. That is why I think Minecraft can be so 48 | MARCH Connector
beneficial in the classroom. It can be used to make learning more attractive and relevant to students, encouraging and rewarding them for their interactions. Learners become more enthusiastic and engaged and hence leave acquiring greater knowledge and understanding of the content covered as well as skills related to problem solving, group work and good communication.” Specifically, how can it be part of the curriculum? “The possibilities are nearly endless and limited only by the imagination and time available. A good example could be in history and geography. Students can examine worlds built to scale by the Minecraft community, such as the Forbidden City of ancient China, Greek temples, ancient Rome, or the Pyramids of Giza. They can also experiment with recreating or rebuilding such landmarks as the Seven Wonders of the world to gain a greater insight into how magnificent they were. Experiencing for themselves the logistical difficulties of finding, gathering, transporting and organising the vast amounts of resources needed for such gargantuan projects alone can be eyeopening and help with logical thinking, analytical skills and problem solving strategies.” This is an online game. What about safety concerns? “In class, I will most often use Minecraft EDU, a licensed version that affords the complete control of the server, world settings and multiplayer access. I will usually only allow people physically present to join. I understand though the risks young people face while accessing the Internet in general. I would advocate for the education of the risks, as well as empowerment with open and frank advice.” www.connector.ae

Gut health and learning difficulties - is there a link?
T
he role of food on our children’s health has a huge impact on the way they act and feel and as parents, we should never underestimate the importance of nutrition. Research has shown a strong link between the health of your gut and your brain. Specifically, people with insuffient amounts of bowel flora, which is the good bacteria, are more likely to have learning and behavioural difficulties. There is strong data that indicates that the gut microbiota communicates with the central nervous system (CNS) through lots of different pathways - and thereby influences brain function and behaviour. Did you know? An average person has around one and a half kilos of bacteria living predominantly in their gut. That is equivalent to the size of a human brain! Our gut contains 500 million neurons, produces 50% dopamine and 90% serotonin. It is no wonder that our gut could affect learning, memory, concentration, attention, behaviour and 50 | MARCH Connector
mood, to name just a few. In fact, it appears that the child’s digestive system holds the key to their mental development. Good bacteria in a healthy gut will not only ensure appropriate absorption of nutrients from food but also actively synthesise various nutrients, including vitamin K, pantothenic acid, folic acid, vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 and various amino acids. Deficiencies of these nutrients can have an impact on the brain function and can lead to poor coordination, impaired cognition, fatigue, increased irritability and anxiety. Despite adequate nutrition, most children who show signs of learning and behavioural difficulties have multiple nutritional deficiencies due to gut flora damage. It is also very common to see these children show signs of digestive problems like constipation, diarrhoea, malabsorption, flatulence and bloating. Some factors which may have an impact on the gut flora include: · food allergies or sensitivities including gluten, dairy, salicylates, etc. · sugar · artificial sweeteners, food additives and colouring · genetically modified foods · high refined processed foods · antibiotic overuse Our bodies have the innate ability to heal and prevent disease with the right approach to diet and lifestyle. Thus, the emerging evidence of microbiota-gut-brain connection suggests that improving good bacteria may be key therapy in addressing learning and behavioural difficulties. safety tips
A
re your children online? Antigone Davis, Head of Global Safety at Facebook, gives us parenting tips to keep us ahead of the game.
1) Stick with what works. Typically, you can employ the same parenting style for your kids’ online activities as you do offline. If you find your child responds best to a negotiated agreement, create a contract that you can both sign. Or, maybe your child just needs to know the basic rules. In that case, you can establish them early when they first receive a mobile device. 2) The old adage your kids will ‘do as you do, not as you say’ is as true online as it is offline. Try to be a good role model. If you set time restrictions on when your child can use social media or be online, for example no texting after 10pm, modelling that same behaviour makes a big difference. If you want your child to be civil online, model civility and respect in your texts to him or her. 52 | MARCH Connector
3) Engage early and establish norms. Data suggests parents should engage online with their children as soon as they are on social media, by ‘friending’ them as soon as they join Facebook or following them on Instagram when they sign up. It gets harder to do so if you wait. While this is not surprising, it is worth noting that just as you lay the foundation for dialogue and conversation offline with your children early, you have to lay that foundation early online. Even before they are on social media, talk to them about technology as a whole. It can help lay the groundwork for future conversations. 4) Seize key moments. There are many natural times to have these conversations: when they get their first mobile phone (it is a good time to establish ground rules), when your child turns 13 and is old enough to join Facebook, Instagram and other social media services, or when your child gets a driver’s license (it is a good time to discuss the importance of not texting and driving). 5) Ask your children to teach you. Not on Instagram? Maybe you are interested in trying a streaming music service? If your children are already familiar with these services, they can be an excellent resource. The conversation can also serve as an opportunity to talk about issues of safety, privacy and security. For example, maybe you can ask them questions about privacy settings as you set up your own Facebook account. And, as most parents know all too well, your child will likely appreciate the opportunity to teach you. This list is only a start and it may not fit the needs of your family exactly. The important thing is that you are having the conversation. www.connector.ae

G
etting ready for your family photo shoot is an exciting affair. As parents, you want to capture every precious moment as you watch your babies and children grow into the little people that they are today. There is nothing more heart-warming than creating a treasured memory of the entire childhood journey and capturing some of your family’s most special moments on camera. Whilst selfies and other smartphone photos may be taken by the hundreds, to really create a lasting moment that can be printed and sent to absent family and friends for the holidays, or even kept on the mantelpiece in your home, you may choose to hire a professional photographer.
Here are a few tips on what to communicate to your photographer in order to produce the best results: 1. Who do you want photographed?
It may sound straightforward, but are there any specific combinations of family members that you want? Do you want a group shot, individuals, just your children, dad and child, etc.?
2. Do you have a favourite place that all of the family enjoy? If so, then this is
where you should be photographed as it will naturally put everyone at ease and capture you all at your best.
3. Are you looking to bring out certain colours? Would you like black and
white? Think about the end destination of the photo and if there are certain colour schemes to bear in mind.
4. Do you have a specific style in mind?
Are you looking for natural photos of children enjoying themselves, silhouettes from behind, or 54 | MARCH Connector
do you want to capture serious contemplative faces? Do you want a traditional family group photo or are you happy to go for something more active?
5. How will you use the photos?
Allow your photographer to understand how you will use the photos. For example, if you are planning to use these photos for getting your children into an elite private boarding school, it might be more important for your photographer to focus on presenting your children in a calm and polite manner. If you are using the photos to bring a smile to grandparents’ faces, then you might be looking for playful smiles and silly faces.
6. What makes you all tick?
A professional photographer will try to capture your family at their best. In order to save time and give them the opportunity to create more of the beautiful images, share what it is that causes those special giggles and roll on the floor laughter. Tell your photographer whether your children are introvert or extrovert, if they like encouragement and cuddles, and which siblings or parent creates different reactions and what those are. ASK the expert:
TEACHER of the month Name: Ryan Ewaskiw Nationality: Canadian
With the exam season fast approaching, we have asked Liam Cullinan, head of the secondary school at Nord Anglia International School Dubai, for some insight on changes to the GCSE exams and suggestions for managing exam stress. There have been a number of changes to the measurements of schools in the UK. How do they impact schools in the UAE? The government-funded schools in the UK are constantly under pressure to ensure students’ progress continues on an upward trajectory, from primary to secondary. New changes include a focus on the English Baccalaureate (GCSE grade C and above in maths, English, science, history or geography and a language), moving to a grading system that is numeric (9 - 1 instead of A*-G) and a focus on students’ best 8 GCSEs. As always within the private sector, in any country, we have the luxury of observing how these changes impact students. Exam season can be very stressful. Do you have any top tips? I am constantly discussing this with students; it is all about preparation. If students are prepared mentally, they will not experience the high levels of stress often associated with exams. Students must have an understanding of the exam requirements and I always advise the creation of an exam revision timetable. There are a number of things that are compulsory in our revision timetable. As well as the time for revising, they must also include fitting in breaks, social time and sleep. The other vital part of exam time is communication. Students must talk with teachers, peers or family members to discuss how they are feeling. This will immediately relieve any tension. 56 | MARCH Connector
How would you describe your teaching style? I believe in a balanced approach to education and life in general. I really enjoy being innovative and developing student driven project-based learning ‘real life applications’. I am always looking for new ways to grab students’ attention and have them dive deep into their learning environments. Why did you decide to become a teacher? I come from a teaching and education family background. I enjoy the learning process and I wanted to be able to share my passion and talent for the arts and technology with young people. It was my dream to be able to work with students and provide as many positive and exciting learning opportunities as some of my favourite educators had done for me whilst I was growing up. Your best moment as a teacher? Any time my students have had a highly successful performance or produced some amazing work, you know all the administrative work and other challenges make it all worth the effort! One sentence of advice to someone wanting to enter the profession? Be a reflective practitioner and focus your professional development on a few key effective teaching strategies at a time and develop a deep understanding of how they improve student learning. What would your life quote be? “Our job is to teach the students we have. Not the ones we would like to have. Not the ones we used to have. Those we have right now.” - Dr Kevin Maxwell. Why can’t your dog eat
chocolate?
M
ost people know that their pet should not eat chocolate, but not many people know why. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the caffeine that causes problems but another similar substance, theobromine, which is a compound present in cocoa. This substance acts like a stimulant (similar to caffeine). Dogs do not have a specific enzyme that humans have to break down the theobromine. In turn, the theobromine can overstimulate the nervous and cardiovascular system in a dog. This can lead to increased blood pressure, dehydration, stomach pains, vomiting and even death. A response that a dog can have with chocolate depends on several factors, the type of chocolate eaten, the size of the dog and amount eaten. Certain types of chocolate contain more theobromine than others, as an easy rule the darker the chocolate the more theobromine it will have. The best tip we can give is never give your dog (or cat for that matter) With thanks to Homely Petz, provider of pet care connections, dog chocolate training and kennels since 2006. unless it states very clearly on the packet ‘for animal consumption’. Abandoned lives
Around 3000 pets are abandoned in Dubai every year but unfortunately, this is not a visible problem that people see every day. However, there is a problem that people do see every day: abandoned cars. Surprisingly, the number of pets abandoned every year is the same as abandoned cars. Non-profit animal rescue group - 38smiles and Mullen Lowe Mena advertising agency have come up with a creative idea in order to draw the public’s attention to the existing problem of animal abandonment in Dubai. They installed devices on the abandoned cars with the sound of pets to surprise pedestrians around the city with a powerful message: ‘For every abandoned car you see in Dubai, there is an abandoned pet you don’t see’. With hidden cameras, a video was filmed showing how these abandoned cars attracted the attention of residents passing by. Watch the video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNYR9-sVZNI) or email info@38smiles.com for more information.

I
Thinking of fostering a pet? Stop thinking and just do it! Says Berenger Turc, a fosterer for 38smiles.
lived my whole life surrounded by animals. I love nature and living creatures. The idea of fostering came quite naturally as I grew more aware of the stray problem in Dubai. I already had my Crumpet, rescued from my office car park as a kitten a few years ago, and not willing to impersonate the stereotype of the crazy cat lady (I am still too young for the title!), I decided that adopting new furry friends was not the way. Still undecided about my next move, I attended an adoption day. I met with several charities focused on rescuing strays, spoke to the people behind them and met several cats at the vet, heard their individual stories and decided that I couldn’t go back. I had to help. I decided that, at my level, one by one, I could help and make a difference. My first foster was ‘appointed’ to me while still at the vet, so I had to wait before finally embracing my new adventure. My excitement kept rising, my impatience grew, I couldn’t wait to get started! And boy, I was not disappointed! One day I got the call, and
drove to the vet straight after work, feeling like the luckiest girl in Dubai. Romeo was once a beautiful cat. I say was, because someone along the way decided it would be a good idea to cover the poor thing with concrete. He was luckily rescued, taken off the street, cared for by a vet, brought back to full health (minus the hair of course) and now ready for the next stage of his life. Romeo was my first foster, and many more came and shared part of their life with me. Each of them are different. They have their own character, own trauma, stories and needs. I go through emotional roller coasters with them but the positivity always wins. Through the tears of letting go of a newly adopted foster, I still can see the beauty of fostering, and even when I feel the sadness of saying goodbye, I feel the beauty of the happy ending. Don’t get me wrong. Fostering is not glamourous, easy or emotion free. But it is so much more rewarding than it is not. When I look in their beautiful eyes, I can’t help but feel love, happiness, sadness, joy, satisfaction and pride. Those cuties bring more life to my life, and every day, I am thankful, especially when they make me laugh. And yes, if you still wonder, I think I have fully become the stereotypical crazy cat lady, with several furry friends around me! If you are still wondering, don’t think anymore, foster a stray and ‘help the strays of today become the pets of tomorrow’.

Meet Dolce & Gabana or D&G! They were rescued from the streets of Rashadiya a couple of months ago. D&G were a little wary of people so it took a few weeks of daily feeding before their rescuers were able to gain their trust and catch them. D&G have turned into the biggest softies; they are lovely medium sized (under knee height) dogs, male and female. They are house trained, good with kids, other dogs and even cats. D&G are inseparable; they do everything together and we would love them to be adopted as a pair. D&G are fully vaccinated, microchipped, spayed and neutered; they are only 10 months old.
Meet Angel Angel is an adorable young cat. He loves attention and will make sure to remind you he is around; a stroke, a cuddle or a little kiss and he’s happy! Angel is quite playful and gets along well with other cats. However, he needs to be introduced slowly to the resident cat/cats as he takes time to trust and get over his fear and not be afraid of them. Angel is easy going and will make the perfect addition to any family.

‘like a Phoenix from the ashes’
I was very happy in my own home once until one evening, I found myself next to a big smelly box on the street. I soon started to starve and lose weight. My fur started falling out, my hips became very sore and was finding it hard to walk. My heart also wasn’t working very well. Then one day, I was rescued and taken to the vet. I had an enlarged heart, very sore back hips, no fur at all, weighed only 2 kilos and was FIV positive. After a few months at the vet, I doubled in weight, could walk just fine, and my fur started growing back. Because I’m FIV positive, I should live indoors as an only cat. Ultralift & Mesotherapy @ Bloom
Bloom Aesthetic & Laser Clinic’s stunning new clinic in Jumeirah offers a wide range of treatments including non-surgical skin enhancing, body slimming programmes, laser procedures and more. After a consultation with the experienced Dr Dahlia, my skin was computer analysed, and a combination of Ultralift and Mesotherapy was recommended.
What’s involved?
Ultralift - often referred to as ‘the non-surgical facelift’ - is a non-invasive treatment using ultrasound to tighten and lift sagging skin, reduce wrinkles, enhance facial contours and emphasise the jawline. The ultrasound not only lifts the skin, but also the deep muscle layer below. I could feel my facial muscles contract as the warmth of the ultrasound energy was delivered deep beneath my skin, and the production of new collagen was stimulated. Mesotherapy is a rejuvenation treatment for pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, scars and skin smoothing and firming. Dr Dahlia administered injections of DMEA (a lifting ingredient) to my jaw line, and soya bean extract to melt pockets of fat on my lower face. This was followed with micro-needling using Dermapen. Small pin pricks were applied all over my face allowing a personalised cocktail of vitamins, minerals and amino acids to penetrate my skin.
What are the results?
The results of both procedures are immediate and very impressive. My skin felt and looked firmer, smoother and more youthful. Within two weeks, I saw huge improvements and over the next 2-3 months I can expect even more as the growth of new collagen strengthens and tones my skin from within. I highly recommend both treatments and will certainly be back for more!
How much?
Prices for Mesotherapy start from Dhs 750 and Ultralift from Dhs 10,000. For appointments call 04-3993434. -L.D. 68 | MARCH Connector
Keratin Treatment @ Peter Hair Lounge
Keratin treatments are a popular option for obtaining smoother, straighter and silkier hair and can work wonders in restoring damaged strands back to health. Peter Hair Lounge uses the Cadiveu Professional line which includes the Brasil Cacau Keratin, which differs from many conventional Keratin treatments, in that you can wash and style your hair the same day as opposed to waiting a few days.
What’s involved?
Peter analysed my hair to determine which keratin product was best suited to my hair type. My hair was washed with a clarifying shampoo to remove excess oil and the Brasil Cacau Keratin, the product most suitable for my hair from the selection, was applied and left in for 30 minutes. My hair was then dried on a low heat and flat ironed to lock in the product, avoiding over processing the ends, which takes about an hour. Following that, my hair was rinsed and a deep conditioning mask was applied for five minutes. After a final rinse, my treatment was topped off with a sleek blow-dry.
What are the results?
Fabulous, shiny, silky, healthy looking hair with natural looking ends. Mine actually looked two inches longer and is now so easy to style, or just leave naturally without the frizz.
How much?
Keratin treatments start from Dhs 1,000 depending on hair length. For more information and appointments call Peter Hair Lounge at the Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel on 04-3771147 or 050-2882211 or email peterhairlounge@gmail.com. -L.D. www.connector.ae

very week brings a new diet craze; from high fat to low carb to high protein diets or a combination. Some of these diets prove a lasting popularity and some fade away with time to prove that they were just a trend. 70 | MARCH Connector
Why do we always go for the fast solution, for fad diets that are crowding the bookshelves and flooding daily media feeds, despite the fact that there are many nutritionists and dietitians we can seek professional advise from? It is because most of us want a cutting edge solution for weight loss? Fad diets offer exactly that with short term options which differ from the long-term healthy diet plans that guarantees long-term weight loss. The common factor between all diets is cutting calories; fad diets do it with a unique twist every time. www.connector.ae
So what is a fad diet? A fad diet is a diet that: • does not include all the healthy food elements and all necessary macro and micro nutrients. • claims to increase your metabolism noticeably in a short period of time. • claims that you will lose unrealistic weight fast. • makes some food off limits. • makes you think that you can lose weight without exercising. • recommends cutting calories drastically. • lets you go on a full liquid diet, take some pills or some herb mixtures. • makes you completely cut carbs, fat or sugar. • requires you to skip meals, or replace them with special meals or bars. Although those diets promise you will lose a significant amount of weight in a short period of time, they will not be effective in the long term if you do not incorporate a balanced healthy diet in addition to exercise in your daily lifestyle. The healthiest way to lose weight is to make small changes in your daily life which include the following: • All food groups from grains, dairy products,
www.connector.ae
fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy oils. • 50% of the daily calories from carbohydrates mostly complex carbs. • 25% of the daily calories from proteins mostly lean. • 25% of the daily calories from fat, mostly healthy omega 3 and omega 6 fats. • Adequate portion sizes. • Three main meals and two snacks in-between. • Some of your favourite foods in moderation. In addition, exercise is a very important key that will help you lose the extra weight. Make exercise part of your daily life. Do it for 30 to 45 minutes per day for a healthy body and a healthy heart. There are healthier ways to manage weight rather than following a fad diet. Eating fewer calories, cutting down on portions and choosing healthy foods are the keys to reaching a healthy weight. It is not only a matter of following a fad diet for a couple of weeks to lose weight without the extra effort; the key is a healthy lifestyle. Release the handbrake:
unleash yourself for success
By Heather Long Vandevoorde, Ph.D.
A
re you driving your life with the mental handbrake on? Are you psychologically unable to give 100%? Is it holding you back from achieving your goals? Dubai-based sports psychologist Caren Diehl, Ph.D. says there are three main reasons people do not give their all to get where they want to be in sports, relationships, work, and life overall: Fear of failure: not wanting to make mistakes and humiliating yourself. Fear of success: if you do it once, can you keep doing it at the same level? Internalising too much pressure: inability to deal with the pressure to succeed from either within or outside sources. How can you counter these challenges and rise to new levels? We all know we need to live for ourselves, not to impress others. We have heard time and time again that we must love ourselves, but for many this is an overwhelming task. How can we break it down into bite-sized pieces and actions that we can really take comfortably? “Create a job description for yourself,” says Dr Diehl. “Take the area of your life you want to improve and boil it down to its simplest context.” For example, a golfer might have a job description that reads: ‘Score as low as possible on each round of golf ’. Next, they write five key actions they need to take to do their job better. These are changeable variables that support their job. The golfer might say, - Follow through each swing - Become a more accurate putter - Focus on my own game, not the others I am playing with - Play at least 36 holes per week - Take at least 4 lessons per month 72 | MARCH Connector
Next, Diehl says, take your key actions and rate yourself three times; on good days, on bad days, and overall current rating. Use a 1-10 scale. From this you can re-rank the actions in order of importance and focus on those that need the most work. Go back and re-rank yourself monthly to track changes and improvements. “The boost you get will be written in front of you. Seeing your progress builds confidence, motivation and focus which feeds on itself resulting in your success,” explains Dr Diehl. The job description never changes, but the key actions may, over time. The golfer might become a terrific putter and leave that aspect off the list but may start slicing their drive and need to focus on a looser grip. www.connector.ae

Diet and oral health
A
ll of us are aware that a good diet is essential for healthy living, but we should also be aware of the significant impact it can have on oral health. Dietary deficiencies are known to cause several diseases that manifest as oral changes. In addition, certain foods have both a beneficial and disease-causing capacity, potentially affecting the teeth, gums, and oral tissues. The most common dental disease is dental caries or tooth decay. Diet affects the integrity of the teeth, pH of the saliva and plaque. When food comes in contact with the teeth, there is a complex interplay of bacteria, food and teeth, resulting in a change of pH in the mouth. A lower or acidic pH is detrimental to the teeth as it leads to dissolution of tooth mineral and weakening of tooth structure, eventually leading to 74 | MARCH Connector
cavity formation. A higher pH on the other hand is beneficial as it promotes the depositing of minerals such as calcium and phosphates onto the teeth. Food choices play an important role in determining the pH as food is fuel for the bacteria, so we need to make wise choices with our food. Foods such as milk, cheese, fibrous fruits and vegetables and whole grains help maintain the pH balance. Poor food choices include fermentable carbohydrates and refined foods like candy, cookies, cakes, pies, breads, pasta, muffins and potato chips are easily fermentable and contain large amounts of sugar and can stick to the teeth, providing a fuel source for bacteria. While it is not entirely possible to completely avoid a refined diet in today’s world, other factors which also play an important role should be considered while making food choices. 1. Physical nature/consistency of the food: Clingy foods like cookies, crisps, candies stick to the teeth for longer compared to foods like jelly and caramel which are soluble sugars and are easily washed away by saliva. So if you want to eat something sugary, make sure they are easily soluble sugars rather than their sticky counterparts. 2. Frequency of eating: Each time we nibble on food or sip a drink containing carbohydrates, there is a change in pH which lasts for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Limiting the frequency of snacking on refined foods can prevent a frequent drop in pH. It is advisable to eat sugary foods during meals rather than in between meals as it limits the frequency of attacks. Healthy choices can be made like cheese, nuts and fruits for in between snacking. Key elements of sleep hygiene
76 | MARCH Connector
www.connector.ae
G
iven the high prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders, it is crucial to examine sleep as an important factor of consideration in overall, optimal wellbeing. Indeed, when a person states that they have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, we investigate the underlying reasons because it is known that a lack of regular, high quality sleep can contribute to further psychological, physical, and cognitive decline. We must also be realistic though, because monophasic sleep (sleeping once per day, continuously, for seven to nine hours) is simply not possible for some members of the population, and if anything, the mere knowledge that one has been up or awake several times during the night may cause unnecessary stress. As such, we must work towards what is sensible and realistic for each individual. Groups of people at higher risk of sleep deprivation are obviously those with chronic stress and those working overtime; those who are overweight, who suffer from sleep apnoea (when breathing pauses or becomes shallow) or other sleep disorders; elderly people, pregnant women, or those with medical conditions which necessitate going to the bathroom during the night; parents of young babies who wake during the night; travellers, and nightshift workers. In addition to basic stress management such as a healthy diet and exercise, relaxation techniques and cognitive therapy (including problem solving for the issues the individual is worried about), key elements of sleep hygiene (conditions necessary for sleeping well) are often suggested. These include: • Reduction or elimination of caffeine, sugar and stimulants such as energy drinks and sweet foods, as well as alcohol, particularly in the latter stages of the day. • Reduction of fluids before bedtime to minimise the need to go to the bathroom during the night. • Lighter meals in the afternoon and evening to prevent going to sleep on a full stomach. • A well ventilated, quiet, dark room with no electronic equipment. We emphasise www.connector.ae
avoiding looking at mobile phones and reading or responding to messages and so forth; no television; and no other distractions (animals on the bed or using the bed as one’s workspace etc.). • Having a wind-down routine prior to bedtime, for example, no work for one hour prior to sleeping, and perhaps taking a warm bath or shower and turning down the lights. • Having a sleep schedule where possible waking and rising at the same time each day. It is also known that one weekend of ‘catch-up’ sleep is not always enough to offset the impact of a week without adequate and/or consistent sleep; short naps during the day after may be required. • Extras such as essential oils or a spray of lavender mist on the pillow, sound modifiers with white noise, and earplugs may also be suggested. Sweet dreams
Sleep Matters, a community initiative aimed at improving people’s lives, was launched recently in the UAE to help educate, inform and encourage health and wellbeing for UAE residents. The first and most comprehensive resource in the UAE for all information related to sleep, Sleep Matters is a platform to unite lifestyle commentators and the community around a shared goal - getting a good night’s sleep. One of the first activities conducted under the Sleep Matters umbrella, was a comprehensive survey commissioned by Intercoil and conducted by YouGov in February 2014. The study of 425 residents in the UAE revealed that although 35% of respondents claim to sleep better now than 12 months ago, half of them still have a very poor to average night’s sleep. Overall, respondents sleep an average of 6.5 hours during weekdays and 7.8 hours during weekends, with around 25% of Emiratis and Arab expats claiming to sleep less than 4 hours. 89% of those who always or often have trouble sleeping claimed they wish they could sleep better at night.
