I
note
remember even from about 10 years old informing my parents that I was travelling to Australia when I finished school. I was completely adamant, so I don’t think they were too surprised when at 19 I did exactly that. I think the surprise came when I never quite made it back to the UK, other than to complete uni. So our article ‘10 ways travelling makes you a better person’ really resonated with me, I’ve learnt a lot and can genuinely say it has made me a better person. With UK and UAE Mother’s Day falling this month, and so many of us in different countries away from our mums, we’ve put together a worldwide gift guide so you can send her a great present no matter where she is. If you’re lucky enough to have your mum here with you, then why not spoil her with a brunch or pampering beauty treat? The kids’ section gives you some of the best spring camps on offer to keep them entertained over the break. Plus, we keep you up to date on the latest around town including concerts, events, dining delights whatever the occasion, beauty treats and more. Happy Mummy’s Day - enjoy! This month I’m loving this gorgeous dress from Alice and Olivia, the Less is More haircare line and Kiehl’s Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream.

Loved the ‘Animal Adventures’ article in last month’s issue. A friend and I took our daughters to the Dubai Butterfly Garden yesterday and they loved it! We had no idea it was there, and it’s so worth a visit. If you have little ones…go! We also enjoyed the Dubai Miracle Garden. I don’t think either are open over the summer though. Thanks for the info. From Lotta
Hi Louise, great to see the continuing coverage for Dubai’s needy cats that are looking for homes. We’ve fostered a few cats over the years and it really is very rewarding, and a good option to owning a pet when you don’t know how long you’ll be here for. It would be good to see some dogs in the coming months. Regards, Judith
Thanks for highlighting the Clean Up UAE Campaign on your Facebook page. This issue is so important, especially for the region’s wildlife, and I don’t think it always gets the coverage it deserves. I urge everyone to get educated and get involved in this great campaign. Well done Connector. H.J.R.
There were some great options in the February issue for Valentine’s, but I particularly like the fact that you included some ideas that are completely free. Not everyone can afford dinner in a 5* restaurant! Mona

Louise Karim Managing Director of Mums@Work
12 | MARCH Connector
www.connector.ae
What brought you to Dubai?
After living in London for 12 years it was time for a change. I took a role with Emirates Airline in their Corporate Communications department and headed off to the desert for what I thought would be a few years, and I’m still here over eight years later!
Describe a typical day
An early wake up as my youngest likes to get up around 4am! I spend time with my two boys (Hamdan three years and Harith 19 months) and head out for an early morning run, after that I get to the office by around 7.30am. Following a catch up with the team to focus our day I am generally out and about in the city at meetings, then at around 3pm I pick the boys up from nursery. We then enjoy a few hours in the park before bedtime. That’s when I can enjoy a few hours with my husband or pick up any unfinished work from the day.
How did you get into this profession?
I come from a communications background with over 15 years in marketing, digital and PR so moving into recruitment was a bit of a change for me. Though for me it is much more than recruitment it’s about changing the ways of working for women in the region and empowering women to get back to the workplace after having time away, something I am very passionate about and understand fully with two young boys! I joined David Mackenzie, founder of Mackenzie Jones and Mums@Work, early in 2016 and since then have developed the company to where we are today.
What is the best thing about your job?
Being able to help talented, professional women back to the workplace in a way that allows them to perfectly balance their career and family. Feedback from mums we have placed in roles as well as those attending our events and workshops. It provides so much motivation to keep going and push to make flexible working the norm in the region. www.connector.ae
And the worst?
That we can’t get everyone a flexible job (just yet!) We have over 8,000 professional mums registered with us and we are working hard not only to find roles for them, but also empower and train them through our monthly events and workshops lead by industry professionals.
What was a standout moment in your career?
The launch of Mums@Work, as I mentioned this is so much more than a job, it’s a passion for me and the rest of the team. We are making changes and helping so many talented women get back to the workforce.
What advice would you have for any young person wanting to get into your field?
I think being determined and focused on what you want to do is very important, you will get knocks along the way, but keep going and be creative with your approach. Always strive to expand your knowledge and experience this could be through practical experience such as an internship, through your networks and events in the region.
Your motto?
‘If you never try you never know’. Connector MARCH | 13

Kiwi is an exotic fruit that originated in China, with a fuzzy outer skin and juicy flesh. Rich in trace elements, minerals and vitamins, the kiwi quickly conquered the global market with its unique, exceptional sweet and sour taste!
Why introduce kiwi into our daily diet?
How to enjoy kiwis
It is rich in vitamin C. Consumption of a single kiwifruit can cover the human organism’s daily requirement in this vitamin. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, E and B complex, and it contains potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.
There are several different ways to incorporate kiwis into your daily diet: • Serve your friends a refreshing fruit drink made with kiwi and melon. • Make delicious and healthy kiwi-based smoothies. • Enrich your breakfast by adding freshly cut slices of kiwi to yoghurt or to your cereal. • Enjoy chocolate kiwis! Cut the kiwis in slices and dip them in melted chocolate. The taste is a revelation! • Simply add kiwi to your favourite green salad.
European kiwis conquer the global market! European kiwi stands out for its quality, both in taste and in nutritional value, because it is harvested by hand. Kiwis are placed in suitable refrigerated storage areas within 24 hours from harvesting, thus guaranteeing that all of the fruit’s nutrients are preserved. European kiwis stand out and are sought after in many international markets, and are exported to over 51 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

So let your imagination run free and pleasantly surprise your friends and family, by using kiwi in various recipes. The results will amaze you!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY International Women’s Day (8th March) is a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for increasing gender equality. IWD has been observed since in the early 1900s, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialised world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. There is no one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub that is solely responsible for IWD. Many organisations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause. International Women’s Day 2017 is asking you to #BeBoldForChange. To call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world - a more inclusive, gender equal world. Visit www.internationalwomensday.com for more information.
So how will we celebrate IWD in

cleaning habits that will change your life
I
magine coming home after a long day at work and all you want is to relax but the TV remote control is nowhere to be found. An evening, after the kids had fallen asleep, to have a relaxing shower and read a book, except, you cannot find your book and the bathroom has piles of dirty laundry scattered. We spend one year of our lives looking for lost items, according to The National Association of Professional Organisers. Surely, a waste of time. Living in a not-so-organised home is not only unpleasant but isn’t conducive to relaxation or peace of mind. In order to overcome the clutter, old habits must be replaced with new ones. www.helpling.ae, the global platform for booking cleaning services online, pinpoints the main habits to ensure a mess-free, stress-free life. 1. Everything goes back to where it belongs: whether it is shoes, clothes, books or dishes, placing items back in their original place ensures avoiding pile ups and bundles of clutter to deal with. 2. Box it: Placing items in boxes or trays keeps everything tidy and compartmented. A special tray for all the remote controls means less www.connector.ae
frustration since you know where the remote control will always be. This method can be adapted to most items, from jewellery to shoes and even kitchen gear. 3. Live a paper-free life: Paper piles up and is unpleasant to deal with. It can easily end up as a mountain of mess in a corner. Since almost everything is available online, from menus to mail, there is no need for stacks of paper anymore. Contribute to the environment by living a paper-free life. Use cloud storage such as Drive or Dropbox for easy access to all your information and even photos. 4. Be a minimalist: Adapting to a minimalist lifestyle not only offers you space but clarity as well. Minimalism is a way to escape the excesses of the world around us, the excess of clutter and having too much. Minimalism simplifies your life and offers you more room and mental space. 5. Regular dusting: One of the main habits to sustain a clean home every day is to dust and vacuum regularly. With services such as Helpling.ae available, this should not be a difficult habit to follow. HOME & garden
Three key design trends to watch for in 2017 2017 will redefine luxury with trends that will tell a story of authenticity and luxury. Designers are shifting away from an exclusively aesthetic approach and are starting to prioritise the fulfilling the needs of space in one’s home. Samer Al Isis, CEO of the Poltrona Frau Group ME, believes that this approach is the future of interior design and shares his thoughts on the key design trends that will take off this year.
Trend One: A luxurious balance between comfort and style
Lavish materials and Middle Eastern taste often go hand in hand. There is a much-needed balance between comfort, aesthetics and the iconic lush attributes. Although the interior design market continues to demand luxury, comfort is the key to making a space inviting. Visual appeal is one essential component of interior design, however, it is not the only component. When designing a home, designers should always consider ways in which they can make a home an oasis - not just aesthetically but tangibly and by creating a haven from the stress of the outside world. 46 | MARCH Connector
www.connector.ae
To strike this balance, it is important to avoid underestimating the quality of materials. A fine craftsman will always ensure that their product is pleasing both on the interior and the exterior.
Trend two: A collaborative approach: Curve and Colour
2017 will see an increase in the use of oversaturated natural hues, soft curved lines and organic shapes with stunning stone and marble accents are on trend. Mood lighting is also a necessity to finish this season’s trends with a polished glow. We can expect to see more clear lines and chromatic colours schemes mimicked from Bauhaus’s style, with an enriched palette of softer pastels, accentuated with tones and textures of natural materials. To achieve the best outcome in embracing this season’s trends with curve and colour, research is key. Follow key designer’s such as Giulio Capellini for advice or inspiration and be sure to accent each trend with your own style, your home or office should mirror your personal flair, likes and dislikes.
www.connector.ae
Trend Three: Sentimental Space
Interior designers are further exploring different avenues of creating more personalised spaces to accommodate the needs of an individual. These curated experiences have been one of the biggest trends in interior design this year. As we continue to embrace the ongoing evolution of change, the celebration of meaningful experiences through spaces by unique, authentic and more holistic design approach will be something to look forward to this year. Large spaces can create more freedom to accentuate and smaller spaces require less intensity to achieve an overall look. It is important to consider how to best utilise and implement a design trend in relation to the space. Sometimes an optimum space can be completely embellished in a trending design - provided the room is designed with the big picture in mind. Other times, often less is more and one classic piece can transform an entire room.

KIDS & education
ALL WORK and
NO PLAY Once upon a time, kids’ afternoons centered on things like making mud pies, riding bikes or playing catch in the front yard. Nowadays, a growing number of children and teens spend their afterschool time being shuffled from one activity to another. After school activities provide kids with a way to stay active, make new friends and explore their interests. Activities ranging from sports to art and music to volunteering programmes play a crucial and positive role in their lives. In addition, organised and structured out-of50 | MARCH Connector
school activities are enormously important to the children providing them several benefits: 1. Norm for the majority of kids With so many different things to choose from, more kids than ever are taking part in activities outside of school. Nearly six in 10 kids aged from six to 17 participate in at least one activity on a regular basis. 2. Club and specialised lessons don’t fall far behind Even though sports have the highest participation rates, they see a decent amount of competition from other activities. Roughly www.connector.ae
29% of students aged between six and 17 are members of a special interest club or take lessons to perfect their skill in areas such as dance, music or learning a foreign language. 3. Boys are more likely to play sports Although there are plenty of girls who enjoy playing sports like softball, volleyball and basketball at the high school level, they are outnumbered by their male classmates. When you break it down, 44% of male high school seniors participate in sports compared to 36% of females. 4. While girls dominate in other areas When it comes to certain kinds of extracurricular activities, there are some that attract greater numbers of female students. For example, in terms of music and the performing arts, 28% of girls are involved in these activities versus 18% of boys. Female students are also more likely to dedicate time to working on the school newspaper, yearbook or student council. 5. Time investment On average, youths aged five to 18 devote about five hours each week to extracurricular activities. 6. Kids who are more active may do better in school After school programmes can have an impact on academic achievement. Numerous research studies have attempted to prove whether kids who join in extracurricular activities perform better academically. 7. And they are more likely to have fewer absences There is also a significant amount of debate over whether things like sports or clubs influence attendance rates. The majority of students had no unexcused absences while only a few of nonparticipants had never missed school. 8. Participation can contribute to a positive self-image The after school setting presents an opportunity to address the growing problem of obesity among children and youth. It is proved that after school programmes can contribute www.connector.ae
to healthy lifestyles and increased knowledge about exercise and nutrition. The teen years can be a dangerous time in terms of building confidence, but extracurricular activities may instill a deeper sense of worth. It is clear that friendship is not formed by the amount of time you spend with someone, but by the experiences you share together. One of the most exciting experiences for students in Dubai is Escape Games. Not only are they a fun experience, but also an icebreaker that helps you bond with everyone in the room as you work together to achieve a common goal: escaping in time. With thanks to Lina El Saheb, Managing Partner, HintHunt. HintHunt is a simple and fun live escape game, designed for small groups of three to five people. The team will get 60 minutes to climb a mountain of puzzles and mysteries in a room. The goal is simple yet challenging: get out in time! Or else you could be trapped inside forever! During this engaging and challenging game, team members truly live and breathe in unison for an hour. Inside school what you need is focus, but outside you need fun and escape games like HintHunt will bring both to the table. LEARNING LIFE SKILLS
at
CAMP
To many, kids’ camps might seem like nothing more than fun and games. However, studies have shown that camps can be a positive environment for youth development and valuable life skills can be learnt.
To get fit. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that kids aged from five to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity, physical activity daily. With social media, smartphones and video games all competing for their attention, it can sometimes be hard to ensure they get it. At camps, physical activities tend to be disguised as fun and games, meaning that they adopt a healthier lifestyle without even realising they are doing it. 52 | MARCH Connector
How to get along with others. Talk to any former camper and you are likely to hear stories of how some of their most treasured friendships came from camp. One of the major benefits of camps is the social skills that develop and often even the most shy child can learn how to interact with others in a positive way. To overcome challenges. Camps encourage children to get outside their comfort zone www.connector.ae
through a range of sports, drama performances or musical performances among other things. Allowing children to face challenges and take (safe and supervised) risks can help build their independence and self-esteem. How to lead. Camps can teach children how to be leaders through everyday play and experiences. Learning how to lead essentially teaches them how to be a good citizen, a valuable life skill in today’s society. throughout the week kids will have the chance to work on developing a true understanding of mathematical concepts. The spring break programme can be utilised for either one or two weeks and runs from 25th March to 13th April. They also offer free assessment upon registration. Visit www.mathnasium.ae.
Jebel Ali Village Nursery’s Spring Camp runs from 24th March to 8th April for children aged 12 months to six years old. The nursery’s team of enthusiastic and dedicated staff will entertain your children through the Easter holidays with action packed activities including visits from the Easter Bunny and an Easter egg hunt. Each day the children explore different topic themes through a variety of activities. Haircut and blow dry @ Ted Morgan The exclusive Ted Morgan Hair has just opened its brand new salon in Town Centre Jumeirah and as I hadn’t had my hair cut for about four months, I just had to get myself an appointment…pronto!
What’s involved?
I’ve had some very strange baby hair growth on the top of my head recently which has led to me just ignoring my hair and tying it back for ease. Louise had a good look and suggested giving it a really good cut of about an inch. The length of my hair, she said, was weighing it down and making the difference between the new hair growth and the rest of my hair too great.
What are the results?
My hair feels so much better, it’s light, bouncy and looks so much healthier. I’m back to being able to do my hair myself and not tying it back every day. Great cut and style, lovely salon and staff - I will be back!

Which cleanser? Who would ever think that cleansers could become so confusing? After all, what happened to good old-fashioned soap and water? Some women find themselves unsure as to what their skin needs and cleansers can therefore be a constant battle of confusion. One thing to remember is that our skin types can differ from season to season and can also alter when we travel. A couple of different cleansers on hand will always provide the correct type of cleansing at anytime. Facial washes These liquid and gel cleansers are designed to be ‘lathered up’ with water to dissolve grime, dirt and stale make-up from the skin’s surface. They are suitable for all skin types, so you must just check that you buy the correct one for your skin type. Make sure that you don’t over use 62 | MARCH Connector
when treating an oily skin. That ‘extra’ washing is not always a good thing and can lead to a dryness of pores. They’re great for those that love that the soap and water feel but like the convenience of a pump bottle. Cleansing bars A soap and water wash to cleanse your skin without stripping it of moisture - ordinary soap is too drying for most skins. Soap bars are more refreshing for oilier skin types and help to keep pores clear and prevent pimples. There are cleansing bars for every skin type and again, great for those who love that soap and water freshness. The soap bar corrects the www.connector.ae
PH balance of the skin, so that it doesn’t strip it of natural oils. Even oily skin needs some natural oil.
to spread any infections. Sterilising the brush head is a must and I would recommend a simple solution of Milton sterilising fluid.
Cleansing lotions Probably the most popular cleanser once you get into wearing more make-up. They are milky in consistency and are suitable for normal, combination and sensitive skins. A milky cleanser can be more effective in the removal of make-up. Use with damp cotton wool pads, sweeping the cleanser over the face to remove make-up. Or massage into skin with wet hands before removing with a wet face cloth.
Skincare wipes Personally, I would never recommend these on a day-to-day basis alone, as they are simply not enough to leave the skin feeling clean enough. They can dry out very easily if you do not seal the pack properly and I find them quite drying to the skin. Fine to use if you are travelling or need a quick and lazy rescue wash after a late night.
Cream cleansers These light creams are a great way to cleanse drier and more mature complexions. They generally have quite a light, fluid consistency to make them easy to spread onto the skin. They contain oils to dissolve surface dirt and make-up, so that they can be easily swept from your skin with cotton wool. Use damp cotton wool if you prefer a fresher touch. Muslin cloth cleanser Milky cleansers and cloths are the latest method of cleansing skin, which, really equates to the age-old ‘soap and flannel’ method. The action of the muslin cloth is a daily but gentle exfoliation on the skin, which speeds up the cell renewal process, thus leaving you with a bright and refreshed complexion. Cloths need to be washed frequently.
Cleansing waters One of my favourite new finds are cleansing waters. They actually work really well if you use them with the skincare wipes above as they add that bit more moisture to the wipe and are easier to use than a damp cotton pad. I like the fact that the cleansing water also removes eye make-up as long as it isn’t too heavy or waterproof. So there you have it, eight types of cleanser for approximately four types of skin. I’m sure that given another year or two, I’ll be able to add a few more to my list. With thanks to Hazel Mills, Beauty Consultant.
Facial cleansing brushes These can be both electronic and super expensive or hand held whereby you move the brush around your face with a cleanser. The electric ones tend to have a two-minute treatment timer, which does help with excess scrubbing. I personally found that maximum three times per week is more suitable than everyday in the beginning as the skin can become quite sensitive. Gel and foamy cleanser are best used with this kind of brush and make sure that you use very gently if you have breakouts or acne, as you do not want www.connector.ae

10 ways in which travelling makes you a better person If you thought the best lessons in life were learnt only in a classroom, you couldnt be more wrong.
64 | MARCH Connector
www.connector.ae
The best life lessons are learnt a few hundred miles away from your comfort zone (home), sitting on a charpoy (a light bedstead) and sipping tea with a stranger (or a native) who is eager to spill his knowledge to anyone willing to lend an ear. You also have a great learning to do from quietly flowing rivers, massive yet humble mountains, and ultimately Mother Nature, who never fails to awe its children. HolidayMe.com lists 10 ways in which travel can truly shape up an individual. 1. Travelling makes you more patient. Varied cultures, different people and complex situations - while travelling you come across all of this and more. Sometimes you compromise, sometimes you let go of the bone of contention. In any case, you will learn to adapt yourself in the prevailing situations and look at the bigger picture. 2. Travelling pushes you out of your comfort zone. Fear of heights, fear of being alone, fear of water, and fear of unknown - we spend most of our lives limiting ourselves and never really living life to the fullest. Travelling would mow down that wall for sure. When you travel, you invent new ways of dealing with situations and learn to step out of your comfort zone because you know it will only change you in a better way. 3. Travelling makes you confident. You have scaled great mountains, dived in deepest water, navigated in unknown territories, shared tables with strangers, and conquered fears. If this hasn’t made you a confident person, what will? 4. Travelling leads you to appreciate differences and move past them. When you travel, you are exposed to traditions and cultures, you did not know existed. A few could be shocking revelations and others would pleasantly surprise you. Travelling teaches you to be more open and easy going. 5. Travelling teaches you to manage your finances better. From saving for your dream trip to www.connector.ae
compromising with a deluxe room to accommodate an extra day in the city, travelling can teach you about finances so much better than those B-schools. 6. When you travel you are more likely to succeed as a person. People management skills, crisis management, conflict management, finances, better utilisation of resources: if you are an avid traveller, you already have learnt the major life lessons that are required to lead a successful life. 7. Travel helps forgive what you can and accept what you cannot. You have dealt with missed flights, adjusted with a nosy co-traveller, braved bed bugs or had a flat tyre on a road trip. You know there are things that can not be controlled and a few things will go wrong no matter how well you plan them. You whine, you complain and eventually you learn to move on. 8. As you travel you realise that the world is not a bad place after all. People cheat, you get fleeced, fooled and made fun of, travelling is mighty expensive, if that is how you view the world in general, be ready for that image to shatter. The number of good people will always outnumber the bad. Also, you do not need an exorbitant amount of money to travel. 9. Travelling makes you humble. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world - Gustave Flaubert. Mighty Himalayas, deep valleys, infinite oceans, endless meadows: a glimpse of this is enough to make you realise how utterly miniscule our existence is. 10. You learn to enjoy the moment. Probably, the biggest lesson while travelling is to appreciate the moment. We are so busy crying or fussing over things we have little control on, that we forget how to appreciate the life that is passing by. Connector MARCH | 65

Make time for your marriage By Nicola Beer
It’s natural for your child to become your priority and your focus. However, if they are your only focus, this can be to the detriment of your marriage.
M
arital dissatisfaction is highest after babies are born, which is why making time for each other and putting love first is ever more crucial. I fully appreciate that it is difficult to establish time in your new routine to address this as time is certainly more restricted when a child enters your life. Everything begins to revolve around the baby in terms of feeds, naps and sleep patterns. This is on top of all the everyday tasks of employment and housework that you still have to tackle. You are likely to feel exhausted and drained by the constant attention that the baby requires and anything else can just feel like too much of a burden or task. It is a time where more frequent conflict between you and your partner can rear its 66 | MARCH Connector
head especially if you feel that you are not being supported physically or emotionally. Whilst roles have changed over the years and fathers are more involved in the upbringing of their children, often mothers, especially when breast-feeding, can feel like a lot of the care is down to them which can be incredibly overwhelming at times. Studies show that this often leads to women feeling more dissatisfied than men with their marriage first, men tend to report dissatisfaction many months or a year later. One of the reasons for this, and a threat to marital contentment, is the lack of time and energy that you possess now. All the attention that goes towards the baby can lead to feelings of jealousy and disconnection from your spouse. There is less time, up to a third less time, for www.connector.ae
potential to be close and intimate with your partner. Time becomes such a focus with all the new activities and tasks that you have to fit in. It can often feel that time is running out and unfortunately this can all too often be detrimental to your marriage. You may not feel that you can give anything more and that your spouse, being an adult, should be able to look after them self. Ultimately, if you do not identify the changes in your roles and the adjustments in what you would like from each other then you will become discontented in your marriage. This is where resentment builds and leads to distance or angry outbursts. The following suggestions may help to reestablish time for one another in order to create the intimacy and loving relationship you desire: www.connector.ae
1. Prioritise time with your partner over that with friends and family. 2. Don’t be afraid to say no to events or arrangements outside of your marriage, rather than saying no to them. 3. Avoid over-committing your time, earmarking any available time for you and your partner first and foremost. 4. Acknowledge that you will no longer be able to do everything that you did before having a baby and avoid comparing yourself to others or the past. 5. Use the baby’s nap times to share time with your partner. Have a coffee together or simply have a cuddle on the sofa. 6. Turn off the TV, lap tops and put down your phone. Don’t waste time watching things on TV just because they are on social media as a habit to entertain yourself every time your child is asleep. Turn it off so that you can direct your attention to your spouse. 7. Do your best to ensure that you are both taking time to relax and to sleep. Take it turns to have lie-ins where possible and to allow each other rest time. Sleep deprivation and consequent lack of energy is also a culprit in relationship dissatisfaction. You may feel like you are exhausted much of the time. Lack of sleep can affect all aspects of your emotional and physical being. It will affect your mood, your effort towards your relationship and the love that you feel for one another. Help each other out. The most frequent complaints I hear from fathers are, “I feel like an ATM machine, no appreciation for my hard work”. Many mothers share, “I feel I have an extra child with my husband, I do everything and get no help or thanks”. The key to success is patience, teamwork and appreciation of each other’s roles. Nicola Beer is a leading authority on how to save your marriage, an international best-selling author in four books and has been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Network, Huffington Post, Saffron Media and Wall Street Select. New introductions include the Feel Well Retreat, Eat Well restaurant and they have also expanded the Integrative Medicine department now called Get & Stay Well. These three pillars ensure that all aspects of healthy living are catered for.
What’s involved?
There are plenty of packages and treatments to choose from but as I hadn’t been sleeping well I plumped for the Sleep Tight Treatment. This unique treatment involves relaxing the mind and body through different forms of therapies to assist in restoring sleep patterns and a good night’s sleep. It started with a Reiki session to relax my mind and body and aid in the flow of energy. Next a Shirodara treatment 68 | MARCH Connector
is performed by an Ayurvedic Therapist, this involved warm therapeutic oil being flowed continually onto my scalp, it’s said to gradually melt stress away and induce a good night’s sleep. The treatment finished with reflexology performed by my Feel Well Therapist to aid the body further in putting the mind and body at rest. Nicely relaxed I couldn’t resist a quick visit to the Eat Well Restaurant for a spot of something healthy. And with one of Dubai’s top wellness chefs, Patrick Ikinofo, heading up the kitchen, eating healthily here is absolutely delicious. As every dish is gluten-free and sugar-free I had a great variety to choose from. I went for the beetroot and goats cheese starter, seabass fillet for main and even found room for the mixed berry cheesecake!
What are the results?
The new retreat is beautiful. I loved the décor and was convinced I was in an Alpine retreat somewhere! The treatment itself was very relaxing and I did sleep really well that night. As for the food, well it is fabulous! Everything is so fresh and healthy yet tastes absolutely delicious.

Have you ever heard the term water retention or excess water? Well, although a major constituent of our body is water, we can still gain weight due to water retention. This condition is the result of imbalance in electrolytes, minerals and water in our bodies.
70 | MARCH Connector
www.connector.ae
W
ater retention can sometimes be an indication of a very serious medical problem, so whenever you have water retention, it is better to consult your healthcare provider.
Signs and symptoms of water retention include:
• Swelling of body parts (ankles, feet and hands). • When pressed, the skin may show the indent for a few seconds. • Bloated tummy. • Feeling stiff or having joints and muscle aches. • Weight fluctuation. • Increased pulse. • Difficulty breathing.
There are different causes for water retention, for example:
1. Dietary habits Nowadays, our daily diet and the food we consume is very high in salt and sodium. The consumption of sodium, may in turn lead to water retention. Sodium is found in processed foods, pickles, readymade salad dressings, canned food etc. A low protein diet can also cause water retention. 2. Exercise People with very low activity levels, either due to health problems, lack of exercise or pregnancy for example, tend to develop swollen limbs and have water retention. Exercise is the best defence against this. 3. Medication Some over-the-counter drugs, such as steroids, contraceptives, antidepressants and hormones, interfere with the process of fluid removal. Whenever you are taking any of these medications, pay attention to any signs of swelling or edema and consult your doctor if you have any doubts. 4. Diseases Hypertension, congestive heart failure, www.connector.ae
hypothyroidism, liver disease and some allergic reactions may lead to water retention. 5. Pregnancy Pregnancy causes a change in the hormones, which may lead to fluid imbalance, causing water retention.
Water retention usually clears up by itself. However, here are some selfhelp measures that will help you lose the excess fluid:
a) Increase your protein intake as per the recommended 0.8 g/kg of your body weight. b) Increase your potassium intake - this helps in reducing fluid retention. c) Consult your doctor on your medication dosage, if you are on any. d) Add more water-containing fruit and vegetables to your diet, such as cucumber, parsley, salad leaves, watermelon and oranges. These are natural diuretics. e) Drink more water as water retention results from a lack of water consumption. The water will help your kidneys flush the extra fluids. Aim for eight to 12 glasses per day. f ) Reduce your sodium intake and try consuming homemade food as much as possible. When eating out, look out for options which are low in salt. g) Eat a healthy, balanced diet that contains a lot of vegetables, grains and other high-fibre foods. This is to prevent any deficiencies and because fibre cleanses the colon/intestinal tract, keeping things moving smoothly. It also aids in the removal of excess fluid. h) Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes a day to keep the blood circulating in your system, thus preventing water retention. Whenever you suspect you have water retention, try looking out for the signs and symptoms. If you find any, consult your healthcare provider, so they can help you with solving the issue. nderstanding the process of thinking, or more accurately how we process data about what is happening to us and around us, is really important as it enables us to move out of a reactive, action-based position into a more useful, reflective stance. This makes more information available to us before making judgements and decisions; enables us to consider our strengths and resources before making a move; and allows us to ponder the consequences of our actions. What if I was to tell you that the latest research into Neuroscience shows that thinking alone is not effective in problem-solving? Do you wonder why you can lie awake at night, unable to sleep, turning a challenge over and over in your head and never coming to a solution? The answer is in the multiple neural networks, termed ‘brains’, that are spread throughout our body. Basically, you have more than one brain. The new field of mBIT, which stands for multiple brain integration techniques, is based on these latest findings in neuroscience that show we have complex and functional brains in our heart and gut. Combining this with behavioural modelling research, a number of insights have been found about the roles of the heart and gut brains for decision-making. The impact of this for parents, teachers and business leaders is vast. In order for us to lead happy, satisfying and successful lives in today’s complex social and business environments, we must learn to tap into the innate primary intelligences of our heads, hearts and guts. To be truly resilient and authentic in the present day requires new levels of self-awareness and selfsupport. This will only increase in importance as new studies begin to reveal a link between new technologies and anxiety and stress. mBIT provides a fascinating and proven model that reconnects us, neuro-physiologically, to our intuition and instinct. Have you ever been told to ‘trust your gut’ instinct or perhaps ‘be true to your heart’? Research indicates that each of our brains have primary functions or specific forms of intelligence that it processes. Not surprisingly, www.connector.ae
our head is about our cognitive perception, thinking and making meaning, not only from language but also from narrative and metaphors. Our heart governs our emotional processing, relationships and everything we hold important including dreams and desires. Finally, our gut deals with our self-protection, what we take action on, and our identity - who we are. The importance of this is two-fold. First, when making a decision it’s critical that all three brains are involved. Without the head, the situation would not be properly thought through and options evaluated. Without the heart, there will not be enough emotional energy and drive to care enough to act. With the gut, there will not be enough attention on risk management nor enough willpower to overcome challenges. The second implication relates to the reason many clients seek help. The primary cause of inner conflict is when one brain performs the function of another. This can be typically seen when we make a plan that we do not commit to, berate ourselves for not being able to control a habit, and lack the energy and motivation to do something we know is good for us. The applications for personal change are endless from weight loss, anxiety, negative behaviours and cravings. In a nutshell, to help us cope with the complexity of modern life, we need to learn how to tap into, communicate with and align our multiple intelligences to access the wisdom that is naturally within us. This wisdom immediately improves our decision-making, action-taking, intuition, relationships, health and wellbeing, and personal fulfilment. The most fascinating aspect to the findings and application of mBIT is its efficiency in creating effective, positive changes that can be used for therapeutic personal change as well as impressive leadership and business success. Rania Laing is one of the first mBIT coaches in the UAE. She is a Personal Change Expert and an ICF Certified Professional Coach with The Change Associates based in Dubai Knowledge Village. ANIMAL magic
Meet Mr Weasley This is Mr Weasley, you may know him better as Ron Weasley from the Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On his way home, on the Hogwarts Express, there was a glitch at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Mr Weasley found himself being thrown out of a Magical Portal and he landed on a busy road somewhere in Muggle Land. Glinda the Good Witch from the Land of Oz, who is currently residing amongst the humans as well, happened to be driving on that exact road when she saw Mr Weasley in cat form, injured on the road with lots of traffic passing by. She stopped the car, picked him up, and with a little magic, he was able to communicate his story to her. Mr Weasley is currently at Petzone Veterinary Clinic receiving medical care for his sustained injuries. When he is feeling new again, Mr Weasley would like to find a loving home that

he could fill with magic until he is ready to return to Hogwarts one day. Fairytales aside Mr Weasley was found by our wonderful friend and long term supporter Michel lifeless on a highway. To her surprise Mr Weasley was injured but was still alive, he was rushed to the vet where the incredible staff attended to him immediately. His injuries were all soft tissue and there were no fractures which was a huge relief. He had a bleeding and swollen eye, the skin on his chin was torn open for which he received stitches and had several hematomas on his two front legs and paws. His injuries were most consistent with a fall from a high place arather than an impact injury from a car, but considering there was nowhere to fall from on that road, we can only assume what happened. He has been a recovering at an incredible rate and is ready to go to a loving foster home to recover completely and find out more about his character. He is a very affectionate cat, he loves cuddles and head butting his favourite people, he is also a purr machine. He was not micro-chipped, but will be once he is ready for his vaccinations and neutering.
Storm was found wondering around Terminal 1 during the big storm in Dubai last month. Being a Malamute and Husky cross he is extremely smart and a ‘master of escape’ so he had opened the gate and gone for a wander, getting himself lost thanks to the strong winds. We were grateful that Dubai’s dog owner’s community were able to spread the news about the ‘lost Husky’ and shortly afterwards we were able to find the owner. Storm (Snowy was his original name) and his owner were reunited and we were ready to announce a happy ending when the owner openly admitted that he was struggling to provide Storm with enough www.connector.ae
time, training and affection as he deserved, so he asked us to assist in finding Storm a new loving home. We have been able to find Storm a foster home where he is learning to be an indoor pet (previously he was kept outside), learning basic obedience, socialising with the resident dogs and being regularly exercised. In the short few weeks Storm has been in his foster home we have learnt so much about him. Storm is very smart and a quick learner, he is well behaved and good with other dogs, he likes long walks and play time too. Huskies and Malamutes are referred as ‘sled dogs’, they have a double coat, with the outer coat keeping snow away from the body, and a waterproof inner coat for insulation. The temperatures in UAE make it hard for them to regulate their body temperature and it’s easy for them to overheat which makes the UAE unsuitable place for dogs like Storm. Dogs like Storm need to ‘work’ in order to stay active and happy so even if not pulling a sled,

going out on long walks, trekking and playing in open snowy fields would be a dream come true for Storm. To meet Mr Weasley or Storm email info@38smiles.com.
