EDITOR’S NOTE The Holy Month of Ramadan is always an enjoyable experience in Dubai, where people spend more time together with friends and family. It is also an opportunity for different nationalities and cultures to share the experience of Ramadan and learn of the significance of this special time. The experience starts at an early age and our education feature this month looks at how schools help all their students learn about the meaning and importance of Ramadan, and how they can embrace it. This also stretches to parents as well, where schools tell us of Iftars they organise where pupils, staff and parents are all invited to join in. Each day throughout the Holy Month, the fast is broken with Iftar, sometimes at home and sometimes outside in a wider social gathering. For those wanting to share Iftar with friends and family in sociable surroundings, the choices are endless, as virtually every hotel and dining outlet across Dubai hosts an Iftar. It is close to impossible to list them all, however this issue we have identified a variety of lftars to offer you an idea of the different options you have. Ramadan Kareem and may we wish you and all your families a blessed Holy Month.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DUBAI?
Here at Connector, we love our city and know you do too! We asked our readers to share their favourite things, best experiences and happiest times with us. Here are some of our favourite responses. Sahibzada Murtaza Ali Khan from Pakistan said: "Transforming vision into reality!" Caroline Greene from United Kingdom said: "We often go for drives outside of the main city and into the desert and sometimes go off roading with groups, and I always get amazed when I see camels freely walking around and sometimes casually crossing the roads without a care in the world." Janaki Babuji from India said: “Roads, infrastructure, facilities, easy to adhere to rules, safety for women, the best city to live happily with your family.”
Anja Stoehr from Germany said: "The Garden Glow, I go very often with my children and they just love looking at all the models of dinosaurs and hearing the roars they make and then running through the light tunnels and around all the different lit up models.” Natalie Jeeves from USA said: "The multiculturalism is my favourite thing about Dubai. I have just celebrated Easter with friends, and some of those are the ones who invited me to enjoy Diwali with them, and I am also now planning some Iftars to enjoy Ramadan with other friends."

THE REVIEW
Carine at The Emirates Golf Club
C hef Izu Ani is a well known face in the Dubai dining scene and the name linked to some of Dubai’s most treasured restaurants, including La Serre, La Petite Maison and more recently Gaia in DIFC. Another one Chef Izu has put his name to, or should we say his wife’s name to, is Carine, a Mediterranean restaurant with very much a French slant to it along with Italian and Greek elements. Located in the Emirates Golf Club, the long established golf club went through some developments in its dining offerings during 2018, and one of those was the opening last year of Carine. An elegant and stylish restaurant with an indoor dining area and two terrace areas overlooking the immaculate championship greens, with Dubai’s skyline in the background. As you take your seat, you are presented with fresh breads and the balsamic and olive oil combination, which is a great addition to the meal, with olive oil produced from Chef Izu’s own farm in Greece. The menu is significant with enough to choose from whether on an individual basis or for sharing. www.connector.ae
Our starters were tuna tartare, watermelon and feta salad and grilled harissa prawns. The tuna tartare was perfectly seasoned and a healthy portion, and the watermelon and feta salad were a very refreshing dish to enjoy. The grilled prawns were meaty and juicy, however the stand out was not so much the prawns but the sauce they came in, which was just asking to be scooped up with soft bread. For mains we opted for lamb cutlets and sea bass. The lamb cutlets were a great thickness and cooked exactly as requested, ensuring tender pieces of lamb. The sea bass was served in a very tasty tomato sauce and accompanied by a spicy rice which all combined made a perfect and hearty dish. No meal is complete without a sweet to finish off with, and our desserts of passion fruit cheesecake and molten brownie where so tasty that it made you forget how full you were and polished them off easily. Carine offers a menu of food cooked with passion in a great location and setting. Expect to pay around Dhs 275 per person for 3 courses not including drinks. Call 04-4179885. CONNECTOR MAY 35

Schools during
the Holy month of Ramadan
T he United Arab Emirates is a country that strongly believes in embracing all cultures and religions with an open heart. The UAE Government promotes the values of co-existence and tolerance through special initiatives helping make this country the most liveable one for the expatriate community, which makes up over 80% of the population. Residents and nationals celebrate everything from Christmas to Eid to Diwali together, and that sends a message of acceptance and tolerance. Now that the Holy month of Ramadan is upon us, the most important month in Islamic calendar, when Muslims observe fasting from sunrise to sunset, students from various backgrounds are encouraged by the schools to embrace the cultural values of the Holy month. 38 MAY CONNECTOR
To achieve that schools make changes to educate students on the meaning of Ramadan, and adapt lessons and activities for all students to embrace the Holy month. Moons, stars and lantern decors become normal sights across Dubai schools. Schools educate students about the values of charity, a core tradition people follow during Ramadan, along with other virtues associated with the Holy month. This month’s education feature talks about how Dubai schools celebrate Ramadan and educate students, regardless of their faith and backgrounds, about the Holy month of Ramadan and associated cultural values. #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION Celebrations in Dubai schools Schools start the celebrations by involving students and parents in different activities such as decoration in the run-up to Ramadan. Students good at art and craft are asked to make Ramadan props like stars, moons, lanterns and so on. Emma Shanahan, Principal at Aspen Heights British School Al Bahya says, “At Aspen Heights, we are beginning our preparations for the Holy month by holding a community craft event. Families and children will decorate recycled glass jars to use as lanterns. Involving children and the entire community in these preparations ensures everyone feels involved.”
“It is a chance for everyone to gather and have Iftar together”, explains Nancy Hassan, Head of Arabic and Islamic at Dubai British School Jumeirah Park. “Every Ramadan we host two Iftars for the DBS community. One is a visit to the Bastakiya area, open to all. Our main Iftar is hosted at DBS with the support of our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) for parents, teachers, staff and students and is always a hugely popular evening! Guests bring dishes to share and students take part in activities such as a Ramadan quiz and henna,” briefs Simon Jodrell, Principal, Dubai British School
“Last year we asked the parents and the students to write about their good deeds in cards and hang them on the tree we installed in the reception area. It encouraged them to share good thoughts with everyone”, says Nada Almasri, Head of Arabic at Dubai Heights Academy.
Educating students about the cultural importance and other activities Throughout the Holy month, schools educate students about Ramadan through a number of activities including morning assembly sessions on Ramadan, quiz competitions on the subject matter, trips to mosques, having traditional dress days and so on.
Iftar is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. To educate parents and children about this important Ramadan meal, schools organise community Iftars for staff, parents and students.
“We teach them what is the meaning of fasting and why do we fast in Ramadan. We educate them through songs, plays in the theatre about Ramadan, and short cartoons videos. We also have quiz competitions and give prizes to the students who give

KIDS & EDUCATION the correct answers”, says Nada Almasri of Dubai Heights Academy. As charity is one of the most important pillars of Ramadan, schools make sure that students experience the joy of giving. Nada Almasri adds, “As Ramadan is the month of giving and forgiving. we show them some pictures and videos of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Dubai Government organising Ramadan tents to help people in need in the UAE and other countries.” In addition to the above, some schools put Ramadan fridges in the school to encourage students and parents to give food to poor people, some schools put a big box in the school for charity (clothes, toys, useful things) to give and send to the people in need. Emma Shanahan of Aspen Heights British School Al Bahya says, “We use this time to encourage our whole community to contribute to those less fortunate. Last year we donated Iftar meals through a local café, and put together boxes for workers.” “The school will have a Ramadan fridge to serve our local community with different classes taking responsibility for keeping it full”, says Wayne Howsen, Principal of The Aquila School 40 MAY CONNECTOR
“The #DBSPayItForward campaign runs throughout Ramadan and is an opportunity for students, staff and their families to do random acts of kindness for others! Last year saw a Primary student cutting her long hair short, to donate to a cancer charity which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair, students volunteering at Iftar’s at labour camps and selling goods for charity. We are so proud of all the students who paid it forward to others, in so many ways”, tells Simon Jodrell of Dubai British School “We contributed to Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s ‘For You’ - Lakum box initiative where children created custom-made packages for their counterparts around the world. In the boxes they packed their favourite toys in addition to educational supplies and hygiene items. We take these opportunities and many others to incorporate the acts of kindness in our daily lessons and talk about sharing with the less fortunate”, tells Dr Vandana Gandhi, Founder and CEO of British Orchard Nursery. Any school day generally begins with a morning assembly, and schools use this time to give out Ramadan lessons to students. Some schools make an extra effort to educate parents as well about Ramadan. #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION “At the start of the Holy month our Islamic children here at the Aquila School will present a dual language assembly accessible to all to show why Ramadan is important to Muslims”, adds Wayne Howsen. Nancy Hassan of Dubai British School Jumeirah Park says, “We organise workshop for parents to introduce them to Ramadan and the ‘do’s and don’ts’ in Dubai during Ramadan. This is very useful, especially for the new families in the UAE.” Some nurseries and schools organise trips to mosques allowing students to have hands on experience about customs and traditions. “During Ramadan children from a few branches (especially government branches) visit the mosque along with their classmates and do group prayers. They also follow the prayer dress code. Teachers educate children about fasting, Suhur and Iftar for which special food is prepared. The children learn on how to break their fast and what to eat, such as dates and water”, adds Dr Vandana Gandhi of British Orchard Nursery.

Support to children and staff fasting In order to support children and staff fasting, Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) announces special school timings during Ramadan that all schools adhere to. The class lengths are generally reduced to adapt to special Ramadan school hours. This year’s timings confirmed by the KHDA for students are 8am to 1pm or 8.30am to 1.30pm, and 8am to 2pm for staff. In addition to the reduced schools hours, schools support all those fasting in a number of ways: • The school dedicates some areas for fasting students and staff so they can take their breaks away from the students that aren’t fasting and away, from the school canteen. • Older children take part in other nonphysical learning during their PE sessions, focussing on leadership and health education. • Schools have special activities during break time for fasting children who would rather stay indoors.

ADVISE FROM THE EXPERT-HEALTH
Basic habits for a healthy mouth It’s no secret that having a beautiful smile can do wonders for our confidence and self-esteem. With recent advances in aesthetic dentistry, more people are opting for cosmetic dentistry to improve their smiles. It is important to note that having healthy teeth overall takes a lifetime of care and we must not neglect the basics of oral care. 1. Brush before bed: Brushing twice per day is recommended but brushing before bed gets rid of the germs and plaque that accumulate throughout the day. No matter at what hour you decide to sleep, create a habit of brushing your teeth before you do so. 2. Brush properly: Failing to brush your teeth properly can almost be as bad as not brushing them at all. Gentle circular or vertical motions with a soft bristled brush will remove unwanted plaque. Excessive heavy-handed brushing can cause tooth wear and gum recession. 3. Use fluoride toothpaste: Fluoride is a main defense against tooth decay. It works by fighting germs that can lead to decay, as well as providing a protective barrier for your teeth. 4. Flossing: Flossing once a day is usually enough to reap the benefits of healthy gums. 5. Mouth rinse: A good mouth rinse can be a useful aid in maintaining good oral health. It reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums, and re-mineralizes the teeth. Ask your dentist for a recommended brand of mouth rinse.

6. Drink more water: After a meal drinking water can help wash out some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes. 7. Limit sugar intake and the consumption of acidic foods: Sugar converts into acid in the mouth, which can then erode the enamel of your teeth. These acids are what lead to cavities. Acidic foods can erode the surface of your teeth, so be mindful to limit these from your diet. 8. Regular dental visits: At minimum, you should see your dentist for cleanings and checkups twice a year. Not only can a dentist remove calculus and look for cavities, but they will also be able to spot potential issues and offer treatment solutions. Call 800-HBPC(4272) to book your appointment now! HEALTH & WELLBEING
How to look
after your heart
H eart disease is a condition that affects your heart by narrowing or blocking blood vessels that could lead to a heart attack, chest pain or a stroke. Other conditions that affect heart muscles, or valves are also considered forms of heart disease. Broadly, anything that affects the regular functioning of the heart is considered a heart disease, a term which is often used interchangeably with the term ‘cardiovascular disease’. Dr Faizal Javed Khan, Specialist-Internal Medicine at Reem Medical Diagnostic Centre, says, “The turn of the century has seen an unparalleled increase in life expectancy www.connector.ae
and a major shift in the cause of illness and death throughout the world. A century ago, cardiovascular disease accounted for less than 10 percent of all deaths. Today, it accounts for more than 30 percent of deaths worldwide with nearly 40 percent in high income countries and close to 28 percent in low to middle income countries.” Common heart diseases. There are many different heart conditions which are collectively called heart disease. They can occur at any age and are one of the leading causes of death. Coronary Artery Disease, or more commonly known as heart CONNECTOR MAY 45
HEALTH & WELLBEING attacks, are one the most common heart related illnesses. Coronary artery disease is also the most common cause of fatal heart rhythm problems and heart failure. “The heart is a simple organ. It is a vital muscle pump which supplies oxygen-rich blood to all the other organs in the body. There are essentially only four things that can go wrong with the heart: Plumbingi.e. blockages in the blood supply to the heart muscle (Coronary Artery Disease), Electricali.e. problems with the electric circuits that tell the heart when to pump (Arrhythmias/ heart rhythm disorders), Pump- i.e. heart muscle problems which impair the pumping function of the heart (Heart failure), Valves- i.e. problems with the heart valves that can lead to overall heart pump failure (Valvular heart disease)” explains Dr Adam N Mather, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Medicilinic City Hospital. Also, some heart diseases are congenital, which mainly include hole in the heart, abnormal development of the valves and abnormal course of the chambers and the main vessels of the heart. conditions show symptoms in early stages, especially if you lead a sedentary lifestyle. Symptoms may vary from no symptoms to vague nonspecific symptoms like fatigue, tiredness, weakness, heart burn, coughing, swelling of the legs, indigestion, nausea, neck and jaw pain, hands and shoulder pains and sweating, adds Dr Janardhana Rao Babburi, Specialist Cardiologist from Aster Clinic, Al Qusais. Therefore, it is advisable to visit a physician or a cardiologist on a regular basis if you have a family history in heart diseases or if you have the following: 1. Chest discomfort on exertion or at rest 2. Breathlessness on exertion or at rest 3. Palpitations (awareness of one’s own heart beat) 4. Swelling of the legs 5. Transient loss of consciousness However the main symptom of the most common condition of coronary artery disease is angina (chest pain). Angina is typically a feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest which occurs with exertion, and is eased by rest. “Diagnosing a heart disease begins with consultation with a doctor who will listen to your complaints, ascertain your personal and family histories, perform #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING a physical examination and ask you to undergo some specific tests. The tests recommended will depend on what condition your doctor thinks you might have,” says Dr Faizal Javed Khan of Reem Medical Diagnostic Centre. “Heart Diseases can be identified early by taking into consideration the risk factors; age, weight (BMI), hypertension, diabetes, smoking and family history among other factors”, says Dr Gehad El Gergawy, Specialist Cardiologist at HealthBay Polyclinic. Some simple tests are Electrocardiogram (ECG) to detect abnormalities of the heart rate and rhythm, Echocardiogram to assess the valve, the musculature and the pumping function of the heart, Holter monitoring to keep a record of the electrical activity of the heart, and Cardiac Catheterisation to visualise your coronary arteries after injecting a dye through the tube, also referred to as Coronary Angiography. How to maintain a healthy heart to avoid disease? It is of no doubt that the best cure for heart disease, is prevention. It is best to make a lifestyle change to make sure you are maintaining a healthy heart. According to Dr Jayachandran Thejus, Specialist www.connector.ae
Interventional Cardiologist at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah, one should avoid smoking and should be more careful with cholesterol levels if any of your close relatives had coronary artery disease at an age of less than 55 years for male and less than 65 years for female. Dr Gehad El Gergawy of HealthBay Polyclinic suggests that heart diseases can be avoided by ensuring good blood pressure control (less than 130/80), by ensuring good Diabetes Mellitus control and by ensuring good lipid control (cholesterol lower than 4, lowdensity lipoproteins below 2). Dr Gehad El Gergawy further adds, “To minimise the risk of developing a heart disease, it is essential to lead a healthy lifestyle, to stop smoking, to regularly exercise, to maintain a healthy weight and to under-go regular medical check-ups.” Dr Adam N Mather of Mediclinic City Hospital puts light on the fact that unfortunately in the UAE approximately 65% of adults are overweight or obese according to national statistics. Obesity is a result of sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits and is a cause of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and hypertension. Therefore it is imperative that we encourage regular exercise and healthy diet in order to reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. The CONNECTOR MAY 47
HEALTH & WELLBEING minimum amount of exercise for a healthy adult should be 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 days per week." Anyone aged 40 and above should undergo regular medical tests to identify if they are at risk or not. Other tips in maintaining a healthy heart include managing the stress effectively, stopping smoking, limiting the alcohol intake, controlling the risk factors like Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, giving adequate rest to the body and getting enough sleep. How can heart diseases be treated? “Once heart diseases are detected, there are various ways it can be treated. Luckily, with the advanced and latest technology and newly developed instruments, presently there is a treatment available for most of the types of heart diseases.

For certain diseases, taking simple medications are sufficient to keep our heart healthy. Some diseases require intervention procedures like CATH study, closure of the defects of the heart with some implantable devices, Coronary Angiogram with angioplasty, valvuloplasties, implantation of the devices like pacemakers and ICD/CRT. Sometimes there is a necessity to open the chest and do surgical procedures like the Bypass surgery/CABG, replacement of the valves, taking out the clots/ thrombus or masses. Some cardiac problems like arrhythmias require special treatments like Electro Physiological study/3D mapping and Radio Frequency Ablation by using special catheters. The cardiologists will explain to you the available treatment options and decide which treatment best suits you to lead a healthy life, explains Dr Janardhana Rao Babburi, of Aster Clinic, Al Qusais.

How to get that great
smile and shine
C osmetic Dentistry refers to any professional oral care that focusses on the improvement in the appearance of the mouth, teeth and gums. While general dentistry focuses on treating and preventing oral complications, cosmetic dentistry treatments do not focus on the functionality necessarily, it is more about the aesthetics such as colour, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance. However, some of the treatments can have some type of restorations effect, therefore patients with stubborn intrinsic staining, chipped teeth, poorly aligned teeth, and also missing teeth are good candidates for cosmetic dentistry. Dr Charlotte Lloyd, BDS, General Dentist at Drs. Nicolas & Asp said, “There are numerous cosmetic dental treatments available to patients www.connector.ae
depending on their desired aesthetic outcome. Cosmetic dentistry can be undertaken to achieve a range of treatment outcomes from alteration of the tooth shade, shape and size to the overall positioning and make-up of a patient’s smile. What are the different types of cosmetic dentistry treatments? Composite Bonding This treatment can be used conservatively to repair tooth fractures. It is one of the most economical and the least expensive option available to patients with tooth decay, chipped or worn out teeth. The dentist fills the surface of the tooth with the material that resembles the colour of the tooth enamel and then gives the material the right shape using a high intensity light. CONNECTOR MAY 49
HEALTH & WELLBEING Whitening This is the simplest form of cosmetic dentistry used to whiten or lighten the original teeth shade or restore from the discolouration or staining of the teeth. Dr Shahid Rashid Zor, GP Dentist at Aster Clinic, Al Barsha said,” Your dentist will first clean your teeth and make sure that there is no plaque or tartar left on your teeth. Then, they will apply a whitening, or bleaching solution to your teeth. If desired, this procedure can be used to achieve shades that are even lighter than your natural tooth colour.” Dental Implants A dental implant is a metal device used to replace a missing tooth in your mouth. These implants are said to be indistinguishable from natural teeth in the mouth. Unlike dentures, the implants are fixed in the mouth permanently and require patients to follow regular oral hygiene. Therefore, it is also a permanent solution that is as close to the real tooth as you can get. Dr Shahid Rashid at Aster Clinic said, “For the implant procedure, your dentist will surgically insert a small screw into your jawbone. This screw will then serve as a permanent support for the implant’s crown. Once the screw has healed and the surrounding tissue has fused to it, your dentist will be able affix the crown to the screw.” 50 MAY CONNECTOR
Inlays and onlays Also known as an indirect filling, inlays and onlays are molded in a lab and are shaped to match your teeth perfectly. Indirect fillings are typically used when mild to moderate tooth decay is present or when there is not enough tooth to support a traditional filling. Inlays are used when a tooth’s cusps are still intact. This allows the inlay to be placed directly on the surface of the tooth. On the other hand, onlays are used when the cusp, or a large portion of the tooth, is damaged. Veneers Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are waferthin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length. Orthodontic treatments Orthodontic treatment is a way of straightening or moving teeth, to improve the appearance of the teeth and how they work. It can also help to look after the long-term health of your teeth, gums and jaw joints, by spreading the biting pressure over all your teeth. Who should consider cosmetic dentistry treatments? These treatments can give you a smile you always wanted. So, besides those who are looking to correct their smile or crooked teeth, people with ageing teeth are also candidates #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING for these treatments. Sometimes, no matter how good your oral health is, you can’t stop the effects of aging teeth. But with these treatments you can make sure that you don’t lose your charming smile at any age. Dr Ritul Agarwal, Specialist Prosthodontist and Implantologist at Mediclinic Dubai Mall said, “Cosmetic dentistry procedures are usually elective, rather than essential, some cases of treatment also provide restorative benefits. Patients with stubborn intrinsic staining, chipped teeth, poorly aligned teeth, and also missing teeth are good candidates for cosmetic dentistry.” Benefits of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry procedures correct the smile including stains, cracks, chips, non-proportioned teeth and more. By correcting minor issues such as dental erosion and discolouration, you can achieve a younger look as erosion and discoloration are the signs of ageing teeth. These treatments not only improve the appearance of teeth but also make them stronger. Dr Charlotte Lloyd at Drs. Nicolas & Asp said, “Cosmetic dentistry can, among other things improve the overall look and feel of your smile which may result in increased confidence and self-esteem. Other health benefits to patients include reduction or cessation of pain and sensitivity, prevention of further loss of tooth integrity and www.connector.ae
structure and overall improvement in mastication as a result of treatment of fractured, decayed or damaged teeth.” Treatments for children. Many paediatric dentists recommend that parents should take the route of cosmetic dentistry for children if only the dental problem is causing a significant emotional dent or physical distress in the child. Dr. Evan O’ Malley, General Dentist at HealthBay Polyclinic said, “Cosmetic treatment may be suitable for children with the exception of invasive procedures such as veneers, crowns and teeth whitening.” Dr. Imneet Madan, Specialist Pediatric Dentist at Dr Michael’s Children’s Dental Center said, “Cosmetic treatments in children refer to those teeth that have unfortunately been affected with traumatic accidents, milk bottle caries, excessive at-will breast feeding or excessive juice intake. The cosmetics in children is not really the prime objective of treatment, nevertheless, front teeth are suggested to be restored in order to maintain the space for permanent dentition, keep the tongue in right position, proper development of speech and last but not the least, to keep up the self-esteem of the child. These treatments can range from simple composite restorations, to pulpotomy, pulpectomy followed by Zirconia toothcoloured crown, based on the severity of the underlying concern.” CONNECTOR MAY 51

Know Rosacea - a common skin condition R
osacea is a common skin condition that can result in the redness & visibility of blood vessels on the skin of the face. Some of these symptoms are akin to those that occur with acne, & this can result in rosacea often being misdiagnosed as acne. In extreme cases, rosacea can also cause small, red bumps on the skin. Symptoms: 1. Facial redness: Redness & visibility of small blood vessels usually occurs on the face, around the nose & cheeks. 2. Swollen red bumps: Small red bumps that look like pimples & may contain pus. They also cause the skin to feel hot & tender. 3. Eye problems: Discomfort in the eyes due to irritation, dryness, & the swelling & reddening of eyelids. 4. Enlarged nose: Sometimes an outbreak of rosacea can thicken the skin on the nose. Having a family history of rosacea increases a person’s chances of developing the condition with age. Although the contraction of rosacea cannot be prevented, there are certain changes that a person can undertake in order to prevent the frequent flare up of the condition. Some of these changes include: 1. Staying protected from the sun: Applying a sunscreen with a high SPF, wearing a wide brimmed hat, & avoiding the afternoon sun wherever possible. 2. Controlling stress: Stress can be a trigger for rosacea flare up’s in some people. Take deep breaths, meditate & do yoga for a clearer skin. 3. By taking cool showers, not wearing clothes that are 52 MAY CONNECTOR
too tight, & staying away from indoor heat sources. 4. Avoid Hot beverages, they can cause an exacerbation of rosacea, & simply replace them with cold beverages. Rosacea can occur in both men or women, depending on their sensitivity to the triggers. Research has shown that the most common demographic that suffers with Rosacea are middle-aged women with fair skin. There is no treatment or medication that completely cures rosacea. But, it can be managed with lifestyle modifications, & the avoidance of triggers. Some of the most common lifestyle & environmental triggers include: Exposure to the sun, physical & mental stress, hot drinks, alcohol, & certain skin care products. The primary form of treatment for the prevention of rosacea flare ups include the use of medications that reduce redness in the skin, oral antibiotics, Isotretinoin, & in some cases even laser therapy. Swedish massage to relax the entire body
L ocated on the 34th floor of Pullman Dubai Jumeirah Lakes Tower, Fit & Spa Lounge overlooking Sheikh Zayed Road and the Dubai Marina skyline is an appreciable escape for anyone who is looking to pamper oneself with a tailor made spa treatment. The lift opens directly into the spa reception area, and as you step out you can smell a strong yet soothing ‘peppermint’ fragrance that instantly starts to push you towards feeling peaceful. The spa’s decor elegantly supports white colour tones complemented with a beige tinge. It has two female, two couple and one male spa rooms along with gym, sauna and steam facilities. Male and female sections have separate entries. As we arrive at the venue, the spa manager welcomes us with a warm smile and has us sit in a comfortable lounge. We are served a cup of organic tea, and she then asks us to fill in the consultation form. One can choose between a 60 minute and a 90 minute massage; the options include Signature, Swedish, Balinese and Deep Tissue massages. Moreover, if you book a spa treatment, you get www.connector.ae
full access to the gym and pool facilities. If you don’t know which massage is a right fit, the spa manager helps you out. We were advised to go with ‘Relax and Renew Swedish Massage’ because it is suggested to anyone looking for a break from the continuous fatigued feeling, as drudgery does take a toll on your body and a Swedish massage, according to the spa manager, is the best for those wanting to relax their entire body. You can tell your therapist if you have a focus area, ahead of time. The massage begins with inhaling of aromatic oils. The therapist then begins to rub the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Over sixty minutes, the entire body is massaged, even though we tend to doze off halfway through. When the massage finishes you know that you made the right choice. Post massage you are served a refreshing cup of aromatic tea. To finish off, you can choose to use the other spa facilities or directly take a bath and head back home. Priced at Dhs 360. ANIMAL MAGIC
Three adorable pets
looking for a loving home 38smiles is a non-profit animal rescue group that was created in 2012. Since day one the founder and a group of like minded people have been doing their very best to help the stray animals of Dubai. Name: Emma Life without a kitten is empty; life without an Arabian Mau kitten is plane boring; life without Emma is not worth living. Emma is a ray of light, endless entertainment, purrs and cuddles and many years of companionship. Emma 4 months old, is fully vaccinated and will be spayed when old enough.
Name: Mira Mira is a very sweet little lady, playing hard to get at first but soon realises that there’s nothing better than a chin rub. She lights up around other cats and becomes more confident too. Mira is 1 year old Turkish Angora mix, fully vaccinated and spayed.
Name: Caramel Meet Caramel, Sandpit Pawsome Special, she is an absolute sweetheart. Unfortunately her owner did not quite understand that dogs are family members and was keeping her living in a tiny balcony 24/7. It took few weeks to convince him to surrender Caramel so she can find a real family and get to experience love and companionship. Its well-known that dogs are better than humans in being forgiving and moving on without holding a grudge. Caramel is no exception, she is the sweetest young lady that trusts all humans and dogs. It is a pleasure seeing her getting excited by the smallest things like going for a walk, finding different smells and making new friends. Caramel is 9 months old, fully vaccinated and spayed. If you can help save a life by adopting or fostering email info@38smiles.com
