LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I had no idea you could use so many kitchen ingredients on your hair. I tried the egg yolk and yoghurt mix which doesn’t actually smell too bad with my housemate and both of us were impressed with the results. Keep up the good work! - Sam & Jody

As a newbie in town this has proven to be such a great read and helped my hubby find a rental car for the family. Looking forward to picking up future issues. - Pamela Johnson

I was looking to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday in true Dubai style with a brunch. Your best brunches in Dubai article came in handy as we had such a lovely time with our family and friends. - Sandra Birtles

One of my kids needs braces and we’ve been putting it off mainly due to just how pushy dentists become to try and have you buy the most expensive ones. After reading your issue we paid for the cheap and cheerful metal versions. Thanks for the money saving advice. - Joanne Davis 10 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

THE REVIEW

Moombai & Co. at The H Hotel I n a city that has over 2,000 Indian restaurants, my first thought on hearing home grown brand, Moombai & Co, had opened in The H Hotel was ‘do we really need another one!’ After a bit of investigation, it appears I was wrong. Moombai & Co. isn’t your typical Indian restaurant, it’s in fact café style dining of Parsi and Indian cuisine. Parsi cafes are almost unique to Mumbai and were established by Persian settlers who emigrated to India from Iran in the 19th century. Walking in, it’s like you’ve been transported back to 1950’s Mumbai with colourful Bollywood posters and vintage memorabilia adorning the half wood panelled walls. The ceiling fans, exposed brickwork, mahogany furniture, bent cane chairs and pendulum wall clocks only add to the ambiance and style which I’m told are characteristics of a traditional Parsi café. We are shown to a table in the heart of 40 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

the café with quite a few tables already occupied, a few couples, a group of Emirati ladies and several other mixed aged groups all adding to a rather friendly atmosphere. Not bad for a Monday night which tends to be one of the quieter evenings in the food and beverage game. The menu isn’t extensive which is always welcome as you can be assured that each dish will be given the due care and attention it deserves. Chef Ashish Kumar heads the kitchen team and we’re served snow cones as an aperitif which are ice shavings topped with flavoured sugar syrup, a nice touch. We started with Tareli Kolmi, ginger and garlic marinated prawns flavoured with curry leaves, Murgh Malai Tikka, chicken marinated with spices, yoghurt and cheese, Chaap Lababdar, lamb chops marinated in salt, lemon and a coriander chilli mix and the classic Onion Bhaji, crispy onion fritters. All the dishes were executed perfectly with balanced flavours and spice. It’s worth pointing out that the batter for the moreish #connectordubai

THE REVIEW onion bhaji was light and crispy with no sight or taste of grease. The stand out dish was probably the most succulent and flavoursome Murgh Malai Tikka I’ve had in a while, yummy! We have a bit of break before mains were served and noticed their bar area. The café offers bottle aged cocktails all of which are made inhouse. Cold drip coffees, chai (spiced tea) as well as a dedicated espresso martini menu featuring their signature Aunties Chai martini. Our main course consisted of Patra Ni Macchi, steamed white pomfret marinated with green chutney (coriander and mint) and wrapped in banana leaf, Nalli Nihari, lamb shanks and marrow cooked in a sealed copper tiffin served with keema samosa and Chicken Berry Biryani, chicken and basmati rice made with mixed berries and cooked in traditional earthenware. Again, every item was faultless, it’s not often that happens! The concept is very much casual and the kind of place you’d visit with the other half, friends catching up or family get together as the price point represents very good value for money considering it’s licensed in a five-star property. KIDS & EDUCATION

Teaching Toddlers The benefits of sending your child to nursery can be much further-reaching than you think

W hen it comes to early childhood education, there are a great many ways in which enrolling your child in a nursery will benefit them in the long run. And not only that, but the family reaps rewards too from meeting other parents and extending their own network of friends, as well as getting a helping - often expert - hand from staff at the nursery with things such as potty training, selfcare, feeding and managing their child’s independence. We reveal some of the main benefits of nursery… Preparing For School… Preparing For Life Whilst primarily a place for fun and education, nursery also acts as a microcosm of life, helping prepare your child for many aspects of the world, and 46 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

also for their next step - school. Joining a nursery will expose your child to other children from different cultural backgrounds and help them adapt to a learning environment. They will develop better social skills and learn how to spend - and enjoy! - time away from mummy and daddy, allowing them to relate to adults outside the family circle. Developing Vital Skills Not only does a nursery environment help your child to develop valuable life skills, such as self-care (wiping their own nose, washing their hands), tidying away after themselves and feeding themselves, it’s also invaluable in developing their interpersonal skills. Children will learn to relate to and empathise with others, learn the importance of sharing and turn-taking and #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION also realise that certain important behaviours - kindness, manners, helping - are expected of them. And not to mention the fact that they’ll learn vital lessons about friendships and develop important skills which will enable them to form and nurture relationships later on in life.

I see children who have attended nursery as confident and inquisitive learners who are more independent and understanding of others feelings

“In my experience, I see children who have attended nursery as confident and inquisitive learners who are more independent and understanding of others feelings,” says Jan Webber, Director and Founder of Willow Children’s Nursery. “Nursery for children of three years and over gets them well prepared for

school, understanding instructions, sharing, showing compassion and developing relationships with adults and peers.”

Helping At Home Sending your child to nursery can also benefit your life at home with your children, as nursery builds on skills you have already been developing, and also gives parents the chance to recharge. Skills such as potty training, self-feeding and self-care and managing tantrums, will be developed in an environment where your child not only learns from the staff, but also from their peers. It also benefits mum and dad to have a break from child-rearing, if only for a few hours, and parents too can learn tips and techniques from experienced childcare practitioners.

Nursery

know-how The questions to ask, look for, and consider when choosing the right nursery for your child

F or many parents, embarking on finding the right childcare options for their little one can be a daunting task. After all, it seems like only yesterday that you were bringing your little bundle home from the hospital, and now they’re taking their first wobbly steps towards independence. It’s enough to make any mummy or daddy want to put a stop to the growing up process altogether! However, all the socialising and learning benefits of nursery make it a great option for children of all ages - from babies to toddlers - and if you do your homework, you can ensure you’ll feel confident leaving your child in the expert care of a nursery - a confidence that will filter down to become instilled in your kids too. 48 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

So whether you’re going back to work and are putting your new baby into nursery, or have waited a couple of years and now want your toddler to enjoy time with other kids, we reveal the important things to looks out for and the tell-all questions to ask when choosing the right nursery for you and your child… Assessing Your Needs When it comes to finding the right nursery for your child, begin by deciding what you need and want from your childcare provider. How far away is the nursery? Will you walk or drive, or will your child be picked up by transport services? If both parents work, who will do the pick-up if your child is only there #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION for half a day? Logistics play a big part in your day to day life and the ‘nursery run’ needs to fit in with that.

Within the nursery environment comes the curriculum or approach to how they teach children

Best For Your Child You know your child best and you know what’s best for your child, including how they like to engage and socialise; which environments they thrive in and what their play style is. Factoring in who your child is will help make your choice easier when it comes to the size of the nursery. Some parents seek a bigger ‘school’ environment while others prefer a smaller operation. There are also alternative educational options, such as the Montessori approach which you may feel is more beneficial.

“Within the nursery environment comes the curriculum or approach to how they teach children,” says Jan Webber, Founder and Director of Willow Children’s Nursery. “With so many approaches to choose from parents should research and take time to be able to see a nursery in action. For those who love the child led approach to learning, you may choose the Reggio Emilia approach or the Montessori method.” Warm Welcome When you’ve put together your shortlist of nurseries, it’s time to take a tour to see which one best suits your child. The first thing to look out for is the welcome you receive. Are staff attentive and engaged, or are you left 50 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

waiting and ignored in the reception area? Are staff genuinely motivated by a love for and desire to work with children, or do you sense that it’s less a vocation and more a day job for them? Give free reign to your gut instincts from the moment you enter the nursery. “Look for somewhere that’s warm and friendly, where the children and staff are smiling,” advises Helen Black, Principal at The Children’s Garden Barsha. “Is there a positive atmosphere in the school and do they have positive rules about behaviour?”

Things To Look Out For Take a look at the children already at the nursery and use them as a ‘happiness barometer’. Do they seem happy and relaxed? Are they engaged in different activities and playing happily together? The happiness and ease of the pupils will help you to picture your own child fitting into the environment. Check out the walls - are there plenty of educational pictures (1,2,3’s and A,B,C’s, and children’s artwork hung up? Is there a daily and weekly schedule that you as a parent can see to check in on what your little one is doing? Keep an eye out for cleanliness including checking out the bathroom facilities and, if you are able, the kitchen - as well as a general sense of order (which might seem difficult with yelling toddlers running around having fun, but you’ll get a sense of organised #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION chaos as opposed to just chaos). When it comes to the staff, what languages do they speak, and do you see yours and your child’s cultural identity reflected in the staff and/or teachings at the nursery? On their website, the KHDA recommends, “Check that the daily programme will provide your child with different experiences within a clear routine and that the centre is committed to the importance of play for your child to learn.” Also, be sure to look out for the security measures at the school. Are gates locked? Are their cameras? What is the identification process for adult entry and for picking up children and is it rigorously enforced? “Staff turnover is another important aspect to consider,” adds Jan Webber. “Ask how long staff have been at the nursery. High turnover can be unsettling for children, so take time to chat to some staff

www.connector.ae

and you’ll soon be able to tell if they love their job.” Questions To Ask Be sure to write down everything you want to ask before you go. Certainly, more questions will arise as you chat to nursery staff, but with a list you’ll cover all the things you want to know. Ask about the staff-to-pupil ratio and how many children are in the class on a daily basis. Be sure to enquire about (and ask to see if necessary) staff qualifications and ask about their individual childcare experience. Familiarise yourself with the daily and weekly nursery schedules, and if you child is on a particular schedule (ie sleeping and eating), ask how your child’s can fit into the one followed by the nursery. Be sure to ask about their disciplinary procedure - do they use a naughty step, time out, etc? - and also their steps to manage children’s behaviour.

5 Ways parent’s can help

teachers this school year When it comes to maximising your child’s learning potential preparation is key and this starts at home.

S tarting back at school after a long summer holiday can often bring many challenges. Children have no doubt had ample opportunities to play, travel and stay up late, and it is now time for them to get back into their school routine and formulate good habits, to help lay the foundation for a happy and successful year ahead. A child’s first and most important teacher is his or her parents and it is proven that when parents are involved in their child’s schooling, then children do better and have a more positive attitude towards learning. Consistency is the key to instilling positive links between school52 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

home so it is vital that right from the outset, a strong relationship is formed between parents and school.

1 Set boundaries and encourage good behaviour Young children need guidance and boundaries to develop their key personal skills and to learn about what behaviour is acceptable and what isn’t. In mastering this understanding, children will discover that there are many benefits to acting in a positive manner. Make sure as a parent that you fully understand the school’s behaviour policy to ensure there are commonalities between what’s happening at school and what’s happening at home. KIDS & EDUCATION to imprint expectations if children have entirely different consequences for behaviour at home and school. Remember to focus on positive behaviour and praise your child when they make a good choice.

2

Independence and Problem Solving Encouraging children to be independent and problem solve has exceptional benefits. The easiest way to encourage this at home is to give your child opportunities to do things by themselves and when they communicate a small problem they have you can ask them to try and solve it on their own. By doing so you are opening up their mind and helping to instil independence. You can also help to promote this by listening to your child’s ideas and responding to them, whether this be whilst reading a book or whilst out shopping. By helping to encourage active learning, it is likely that your child’s interest in school activities will increase and they will become more confident. It is also important for your child to see that you are interested in what they are doing and how they are feeling about their learning experience.

3

Read with your children Reading stories together with your child can have so many positive benefits. By reading with your child daily, it helps to develop their love for reading as well as their language and listening skills. If your child is too young to read by themselves, look at pictures in books and discuss what’s happening. Ask about the colours, who’s in 54 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

the pictures and ask them to predict what might happen. Opening up a dialogue is a fundamental part of enriching understanding and enquiry-based learning.

4

Keep children active and healthy Today, research shows that physical activity in children is more important than ever. Movement stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and emotional health it is therefore essential to encourage participation in physical activity from an early age. Try enrolling your child in activity sessions outside of school but remember not to over-stretch them. In addition to this, ensure that your child has a healthybalanced diet and that they get a good night’s sleep every night, so that they start each day refreshed and ready to learn.

5 Monitor your child’s television and tablet use Children are spending more time watching television or on tablets. Whilst there are some wonderful applications available to assist with learning, always monitor what your child is doing and limit the amount of time that they spend on devices. Television and tablets should not be used as a tool for encouraging sleep. Don’t let your child have access to the television or tablets, for at least one hour prior to going to sleep as the lights, sound and illustration can stimulate their minds too much, interrupting their body’s preparation for sleep. Looking good naturally makes people more confident and this confidence goes a long way in improving one’s quality of life.” So whether you decry the excess baggage under your eyes, or have been left wondering where the rounded apples of your cheeks have gone, we reveal the best treatments to request the next time you visit your skin doctor. The Problem: Under-eye bags The Solution: Laser With the peri-orbital skin (the skin under your eyes) the first place to show age due to the thinness of the skin, there CONNECTOR OCTOBER 59

HEALTH & WELLBEING are a few nonmedical things you can do to take care of that area. Use a super-hydrating eye cream, stopping smoking and lowering your salt intake can all have a positive effect. However, if all else fails, ask your dermatologist about laser treatments, such as Erbium, CO2 and Fraxel, which tighten the skin and improve wrinkles. If your bag are caused by fatty deposits, opt for blepharoplasty, whereby a small incision is made and excess fat removed.

Clients want results from a less invasive procedure without much downtime

The Problem: Thread veins The Solution: Pulsed dye laser Also known as ‘broken veins’ although the vein isn’t actually broken, just slightly enlarged - the appearance of thread veins on the face can make those affected feel self-conscious. Developing more as we age and skin and blood vessels lose elasticity, thread veins can also be caused by pregnancy and hormonal changes, making women more prone to them than men. Laser therapy has emerged as a great way to tackle them, using brief pulses of laser light to destroy smaller blood vessels. A pulsed dye laser is best for the thinner red veins that are close to the skin’s surface. 60 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

The Problem: Fine lines around the eyes The Solution: Botox and laser One of the major signs of ageing, fine lines around the eyes can be drastically reduced with a threepronged attack. First, by investing in an eye cream that contains retinol to stimulate collagen. Next up, dermatologists recommend laser treatments which work by poking microscopic holes into the skin using carbon dioxide lasers, which then stimulate new collagen and elastin production. The body’s natural healing process then kicks, eliminating older, damaged tissue, replacing it with fresh collagen. Thirdly, a course of Botox injections work as a preventative measure against wrinkles developing.

The Problem: Sagging jawline/jowls The Solution: The Nefertiti Thread Lift One of the main betrayers of age is the jowls and jawline, which loses its firmness as we grow older. And one treatment for the lower face proving popular in the UAE is the ‘Nefertiti thread lift’. “In my opinion, the first thing that our mind assesses when it comes to judging the age of a person is the shape of their face,” says Dr Vimi, Specialist Dermatologist at #connectordubai

After 12 weeks the threads start to break down and stimulate the production of collagen to tighten the skin. The procedure doesn’t carry the same downtime or complications that surgery does and can be carried out as a lunchtime procedure.” The Problem: Thin lips The Solution: Injectable fillers Whether you’re looking to go the full Kylie Jenner, or want a bit of a boost for thinning lips, the best options are to go with injectables. The Problem: Hollow cheeks The Solution: Liquid injectables If you’ve noticed that you’re losing the rounded plumpness of your cheeks, rest assured there are methods on the market to correct the hollowing out of faces that comes with age. Sculptra has emerged as a firm (pun intended!) favourite - an injectable liquid that offers a natural look when plumping out cheeks, and works to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production. Other options include Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane, both hyaluronic fillers, or a fat transfer, by which fat is taken from the buttocks or thigh and injected into the cheek. However, this option is a lot more invasive and usually results in time off needed for recovery, whilst injectables can be done in your lunch hour. The Problem: Frown lines The Solution: Laser If deep trenches have taken up residence

HEALTH & WELLBEING between your eyes or on your forehead, you can start to combat them by making healthy lifestyle changes, including drinking plenty of water, cutting back on alcohol intake and stopping smoking. Gently exfoliating the skin around the area is also recommended, and while over-thecounter creams won’t banish the lines, they can work to soften them. However, if you want to get rid of them, you’ll need to book in for filler injections. Look for options containing hyaluronic acid, collagen, polylactic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite. Laser is another option, which can be used along with Botox to relax the muscles causing the creasing.

In my opinion, the first thing that our mind assesses when it comes to judging the age of a person is the shape of their face

The Problem: Sagging Neck The Solution: Microneedling Women may start to notice changes in their neck skin in their late thirties, when it may start becoming prone to drying or crispness, and fine lines start to appear. While sunscreen and moisturising is a must, there are plenty of non-surgical options available from your dermatologist. Lasers are frequently used www.connector.ae

to tighten the area, with Fraxel Dual and V-Beam standouts, while you’ll also see an instant effect with microneedling, whereby neck lines are treated with a fine-line filler, for results that can last a couple of years. Finally, there’s ultrasound therapy and radio frequency, which tighten the skin by delivering heat to the deep layers of the skin to promote collagen production.

The Problem: Acne scars The Solution: Laser resurfacing Whilst not only being unsightly, acne scars can make those who suffer from them feel incredibly selfconscious. And while you may have left your acne-plagued teenage years behind, the scars can often remain. The good news is that developments in treating scarring have been perfected over the years, and while topical creams can work to smooth scars a little, new technology can almost erase the dimpling left behind by your acne. Microneedling is an option, but insiders have converted to Sublative Laser Resurfacing, which requires minimal downtime and almost immediate results. CONNECTOR OCTOBER 63

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Can your child get

arthritis at an early age? Contrary to widespread belief, the chronic disease does not only occur in the elderly, children and teenagers are also susceptible, with the most severe forms occurring in younger people. Arthritis affects 1 in 5 people in the UAE.

A rthritis is surrounded by many misconceptions. One of them is that arthritis affects only the elderly. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune, inflammatory disease that is commonly diagnosed in early- to mid-adulthood, while children can be diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) as young as 6 months through 16 years of age.

a child’s immune system malfunctions for some reason, attacking the body, especially the joints. It has difficulty telling the difference between the body’s own tissues and external germs or organisms. This confusion makes the immune system attack the body’s healthy tissues. That’s what we call an auto-immune disease and that’s what causes the inflammation characteristic of JIA.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common kind of arthritis among kids and teenagers. ‘Idiopathic’ is a word that we, doctors, use to describe a condition when we don’t know exactly its cause. In JIA,

Arthritis is an inflammation of the membrane that lines the joints (like the knees or knuckles) called ‘synovial membrane’. When it becomes inflamed, fluid is produced. The joints become,

www.connector.ae

CONNECTOR OCTOBER 65

HEALTH & WELLBEING swollen, painful, stiff and warm to the touch. Over time, inflammation in a joint can cause damage in the cartilage and bone. JIA might affect one, two three or four joints, it is called ‘oligo-articular’ form in this case. When it affects more than 4 joints we call it ‘poly-articular JIA’. This differentiation is important as these different forms of JIA have distinct complications. We know, for example, that children with ‘oligoarticular’ JIA might develop an inflammation of the eye, called uveitis. However, the disease might start as an ‘oligo-articular’ form and evolve into a ployarticular form over time. Young kids or teens with JIA may experience joint pain and swelling. They might feel that their joint(s) become stiff, especially in the morning. When the symptoms worsen, it’s known as a “flare” or a “flare-up.” Although JIA is basically an articular disease, it might sometimes affect other organs like eyes, heart, skin, lungs and liver. There are seven types of JIA:

1 Systemic JIA affects the whole body. This type of JIA is characterised by high spiking fever that often increases in the evenings and then may suddenly drop to normal. During the onset of fever, a child may develop a transient salmon-colored rash. This rash may quickly disappear and then suddenly appear again. The child’s lymph nodes might become enlarged. Eventually, many joints are affected by swelling, pain, and stiffness. 66 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

2 Oligoarthritis affects four or fewer joints. Pain, stiffness or swelling often starts in the knee and ankle joints. Sometimes oligoarthritis gives someone an inflammation of an eye that’s known as iritis, or uveitis.

3 Polyarticular arthritis, rheumatoid factor negative is a form of JIA that affects more girls than boys. The small joints of the hands are usually affected in this clinical form. Rheumatoid factor, which is a marker present in an adult form as well, is negative. 4 Polyarticular arthritis, rheumatoid factor positive is the type of JIA that’s most like adult arthritis. This is one of the least common types of JIA, but this the closest form to the adult rheumatoid arthritis. It is known for its elevated risk of joint damage.

5 Psoriatic arthritis is when a person has psoriasis and arthritis together.

6 Enthesitis-related arthritis is a JIA form that affects the lower joints (knees and ankles) and the spine. Kids with this type of arthritis also may have juvenile ankylosing spondylitis if joints of the low back are inflamed. Arthritis that goes along with inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn’s disease) also falls into this category of JIA. 7 Undifferentiated arthritis is a form of arthritis that doesn’t fit into any of the above categories.

Diagnose The diagnosis of JIA is not always easy. #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING The condition can manifest in diverse ways. A pediatric rheumatologist, who is an expert that looks after rheumatic diseases in children, will need to rule out other conditions such as infections and malignant diseases before stating JIA as a diagnosis. If a doctor suspects that a young patient has JIA, he or she will ask about the patient’s symptoms, enquire about family history of arthritis, and do a complete physical examination to look for joint swelling, eye problems, skin rashes, heart and any lung manifestations. A doctor may do blood tests, ultrasound and X-rays. In some cases, the doctor will need to take a sample of the synovial fluid from the patient’s swollen joint and send it to a laboratory for analysis. Treatment Early diagnosis and treatment is the key for better outcomes. While there’s no definite cure, available therapeutics can ease the symptoms of JIA and prevent damage to joints. For some JIA patients, taking medications like ibuprofen or naproxen are sufficient to reduce inflammation and relieve its symptoms. Some patients need to take a weekly medication called methotrexate. Newer medications called biologics - such www.connector.ae

as etanercept, adalimumab, abatacept, and tocilizumab - can modulate the immune system and control the disease very efficiently. For flare-ups management, doctors may also use cortisone, also called corticosteroids or steroids (such as prednisone). However, their use should be limited to short use for flares management, because of their multiple side effects, especially growth retardation. ‘Achy joint’ in a child Very often, a child complaining of on/ off achy joints is dismissed as having “growing pains”. However, parents should be aware that symptoms of joint pain need to be taken seriously when they are associated with joint swelling, morning stiffness, fatigue or illness. These symptoms may be early signs of an inflammatory rheumatic disease that requires immediate medical management. With thanks to Dr. Ghita Harifi, Rheumatologist, Humeira Badsha Medical Centre. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Be breast aware October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - know what symptoms to look out for, how to self-examine, and understand what to expect if you need to visit your doctor, with our handy guide…

W ith Breast Cancer Awareness Month upon us, inspiring stories from survivors and advice from doctors should act as a reminder for women to not only selfexamine regularly, but to also keep a close eye on the tell-tale signs that can often signal the disease. Connector reveals the changes to look out for, as well as the best ways to examine yourself. Symptoms and Signs The earlier the disease is diagnosed, the better the chances of making a full recovery, so it’s vital that you get to know your body, which will make it easier to detect changes. If you’ve been suffering from a pain in your breast, or noticed a 68 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

change in size or shape, you should see your doctor immediately. When it comes to lumps that feel different from normal breast tissue or are around the collarbone or armpit consult your physician so they can carry out a biopsy to determine whether it is cancerous or benign. Also take a look at the skin on and around the breast for changes in texture such as puckering or dimpling - something that might resemble the skin of an orange as well as a redness or rash, especially around the nipple. Changes to the nipples can also signal breast cancer, including if it becomes inverted, changes position or shape, or secretes a liquid without being squeezed. These are the main indicators of breast cancer, with doctors’ advising that tiredness, weight loss and lack of #connectordubai

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS energy are not signs of the disease.

How To SelfExamine The best way to gauge changes to the size or shape of the breast is to stand facing a mirror with your shoulders straight and your hands on your hips. From there, raise both arms and once again look for the changes mentioned above. Then lay down on a flat surface (a bed or sofa) and feel your breasts using a firm touch using your fore, middle and ring fingers and keeping them flat. To be sure of checking the full breast, work in a circular motion and check not only the breast, but also from the collarbone to the top of the abdomen and from the armpit across to your cleavage. Check both sides. Pressure-wise, experts recommend using a light pressure for beneath the breast; medium pressure for the middle and firm pressure to reach the deep tissue, at which point you should feel your ribcage. Finally, check your breasts while you are standing in the shower, with slippery, wet skin often easier to feel. www.connector.ae

What Happens At Your Doctors? According to the most recent UAE statistics, deaths from breast cancer have declined from 8.7 per 100,000 women in 2009 to five per 100,000 women in 2014, with late detection of the disease reduced from 64 per cent to 16 per cent over the same period. The message however, remains the same - the early the detection, the better your chances at beating the disease. If you need to visit your doctor owing to changes in your breast, they will initially carry out their own examination. If they want to carry out further examinations, you will be booked in for a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. Your physician may then want a biopsy, which will determine if you have breast cancer. Because many women don’t experience any symptoms with breast cancer, it is important to get screened, with women aged 40-54 advised to be screened annually. Over the age of 55, doctors recommend mammograms every two years.

If you’ve been suffering from a pain in your breast, or noticed a change in size or shape, you should see your doctor immediately

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS get you feeling ready for the day, such as BodyPump, Yoga and RPM. • Involve your kids in your work out, here are some ways to do it: - Have them help you count how many reps you do, for example have them count your pushups! - Give them the responsibility of deciding if you deserve a treat after your work out. - Let your little ones DJ, pass them the iPod and let them pick the tunes for your workout. - If they are old enough involve them in the actual work out as a challenge. • Ensure that you and your little ones are both eating a healthy balanced diet which includes plenty of fruits & vegetables. • Drinking lots of water is essential to ensure you remain healthy both inside and out, below are some of the key benefits of staying hydrated; - Helps get rid of waste through urine and sweat
