EDITOR’S NOTE September means a lot of different things. It means summer holidays have finished, it means children are back at school, it means more sports to watch and it means that some of us have decided to head back to the gym after a few weeks of routine change and possibly even some vacation over indulgence. This issue we have got all this covered. For parents we have heard from some schools telling us the different things they do to help your children settle in to the school routine again. For sports fans, we have highlighted some of the best places to watch your favorite sports and teams in action. And for those with good intentions to correct summer excesses, we have spoken to experts who give their tips on how to make sure you exercise healthily, safely and effectively. Event season is back and the next few weeks and months are looking very busy, with lots for everyone to do in Dubai as well as around the UAE, turn to our diary pages to see what you can get up to throughout September and what to expect in the last few months of 2019 as well. If that is not enough we have some new competitions for you to enter throughout the month, turn to pages 64 to 65 to see what you can win and then visit www.connector.ae/competition to enter and make sure you stand a chance. Have a great and fun filled month.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DUBAI?
Here at Connector, we love our city and know you do too! We asked our readers to share their favourite things, best experiences and happiest times with us. Here are some of our favourite responses.
Alfie Arcega from Philippines said: "What I really love about Dubai is that everyone chooses to do what’s good thus creating a peaceful community, a feeling of security and a realisation that it is possible to co-exist by setting aside our differences.” Tymur Lyevda from Ukraine said: "I love light in Dubai! This is a very bright city! I want this city to become more alive, and for this you need more nature! Dubai's second beauty is international! This feature reflects the real feeling of freedom!"
Sherif Elibrashy from Egypt said: "Back in the summer of 2007, I left my beautiful country Egypt behind for the prospect of finding a luxury lifestyle. I came to Dubai specifically to work, at the time I was glad of the many opportunities I got here and am still working. It’s been great fun; The best I like is that life in Dubai is too easy in all terms as it is considered as the best destination for families seeking safety, fun and careers. Best education levels are in Dubai, best dining options are in Dubai, spending unforgettable nights in the best places with family and friends are in Dubai. Whether you are coming for business or leisure you can enjoy staying in different hotel categories in Dubai that are providing the best services. Thousands of free and paid options to choose for going out, day and night, from public or private beaches and parks, resorts, restaurants that you can find everywhere and malls etc. With addition to the best transportation system. You will not feel safe until you visit Dubai.”
Lara Davis from United Kingdom said: "My sister introduced me to this Aroma Tierra brand for essential oils - and I am in love with this brand and whenever I come, I take a huge quantity with me. I also love Camel soap company - again very unique to this region." What do you think about Dubai? Send your thoughts to us at editorial@connector-dubai.com! 8 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

THE REVIEW
Opso at The Dubai Mall
M alls are not just places to shop, they are leisure destinations that offer attractions, activities and places to eat. Most have fast food places in food courts or sit down casual dining restaurants, but if you want to see mall dining taken to the next level, then visit the Fashion Avenue extension in The Dubai Mall. On our recent mall trip we visited Opso, the new Greek restaurant from London, featuring a menu by top Greek chef Nikos Roussos. Opso is the ancient Greek word meaning a morsel of food, and that is reflected in the menu which as well as some traditional main Greek dishes, is based on a sharing concept, creating a good selection of morsels to try. To start we opted for a selection of appetisers, including a dakos salad, hummus, tzatziki, feta kataifi and metsovone croquette. The hummus was served with a sprinkling of zaatar, which just added that extra bit of flavour and created a little more of a local twist. The feta kataifi, fried feta cheese wrapped in shredded phyllo pastry and drizzled with honey and sesame seeds, had that great hint of sweetness that could easily have been a dessert, but was not too sweet that it made a great starter. If you are a fan of kunafa and also like feta, then this dish www.connector.ae
is a must. Another well balanced sweet and cheese dish was the metsovone croquette, fried smoked cheese served with a rhubarb jam, which proved a great combination. For mains we opted to share a lamb shank giouvetsi, slow cooked lamb shank served on a bed of orzo cooked with lemongrass and tomato. Even really hungry meat lovers would struggle to finish this dish alone, but the tenderness of the lamb that fell off the bone, and the flavours coming from giouvetsi, would be enough to make sure they had a good try. The menu offers a selection of desserts and a great choice of coffees, from classic and traditional, to speciality including the gold latte with thyme honey - a coffee served in a gold coloured cup and saucer with a gold spoon and sprinkling of 24 carat gold on top. Opso has a wide outdoor terrace over looking the Dubai Fountains. With views like this and food inspired by a chef who’s restaurant in Athens has won two Michelin stars, dining at Opso is a great experience and proves that malls can be great nights out. Expect to pay around Dhs 200 per person for starters, a main and dessert to share and coffee to finish . Call 054-4244999. CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 31

KIDS & EDUCATION
Back to school:
what role do schools play
A s schools prepare to welcome back their students, they try to ensure they settle back into the classroom easily and effortlessly after a long summer break. Everyone from students moving to new grades to FS1 students and specially parents are taken into consideration while planning for this major period ater a few months break. Here is what some of Dubai’s schools are up to for welcoming back the classes of 201920. Programmes For Existing Students Schools across Dubai adopt multiple measures to make the ‘back to school’ transition period as smooth as possible for students as well as parents. From assigning special buddies to conducting induction sessions, arranging staff training www.connector.ae
and organising well-being days in the initial week, there’s much more that schools do to ensure that coming back to school is not stressful. There are special programmes for parents as well considering it is as equally a tough time for them. Dean Pyrah, Executive Principal, Victoria International School Sharjah says, “[We organise] robust “bump up” transition programs for each year of the school where students spend a considerable amount of time with teachers in the learning spaces used by the year that they are going into. These programs include a significant amount of peer to peer mentoring where students from one grade mentor the students from the grade below on what to expect in the year to come. This program takes place at the end of CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 33
KIDS & EDUCATION the year before to prepare students for the next academic year aimed at minimising summer anxiety.” Sreekala Sureshkumar, Senior Supervisor (Grades 11 and 12) – GEMS Modern Academy says, “As our academic year has already started, students joining in September have been given access to academic material so that they find it easier to find their feet academically. Daily monitoring throughout the first week of joining in helps us keep track of new students and existing students as well.” Sarah Brannon, Head of Preparatory School, Brighton College Dubai says, “To start with we have a special induction session for new pupils on their own. This is an opportunity to meet the teachers and they will be grouped together to do some team building activities and orienteering tasks to help them bond and develop friendships quickly and to start to get know the layout of the school.” Jackie Greenwood, Head of Counselling at Fairgreen International School says, “From the minute you step into Fairgreen you will be greeted with smiles and an eagerness to help our new families. On a practical level, we host an orientation event for parents and students, with our leadership team and all of our teachers and staff, will engage with our new students during orientation activities. We open up lots of opportunities for peer to peer 34 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
interaction, with a focus on friendship in our first few weeks of school.” Naveed Iqbal- Principal, ISCS Nad Al Sheba says, “It is important that both parents and students are well settled into their new school or year, we find that sometimes parents require more of a transition than students who are quick to adapt and settle in. With this in mind, as a school we have a number of parent induction sessions at the start of the year and workshops throughout, so that our parents are well informed about the school, its vision, values and expectations and how they can help as partners in the school.” Programmes For FS1 Students Schools go an extra mile to make special provisions for new and fresh entrants to the school setting, the FS1 students. From half-days, to induction sessions, allowing parents in the classroom and training parents on separation issues and managing anxiety, schools do everything to settle down the little one in a new environment. Jackie Greenwood, Head of Counselling at Fairgreen International School says, “In many ways this question helps us reassure our parents, as we know from our experience, that it is more a case of how do we help our parents feel comfortable letting their babies start school! So in answer to this, we find it vital that parents talk to us about their #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION children, we really do have an open door, as we want to support as much as we can. Excellent communication between school and home about expectations, and the program often helps allay any anxieties. We have a brilliant team of kind, playful, enthusiastic, early year’s teachers that helps our FS1 children feel content, secure, and excited about their learning. Our class sizes are small, and each class has an assistant to help. In the first weeks of school, circle times will focus on friendship and helping the children settle into a routine.” Schools have found that it takes a child a week to adapt to the new environment. “We have found that most students settle into their classes well, should a child take time to settle in after the first week, we will then work with the parents to have a personalised transition plan to help the child settle and enjoy their learning and school”, says, Naveed Iqbal of ISCS Nad Al Sheba. “The first day at Dubai British School Jumeirah Park is spent acclimatising the children to their new environment and allowing them to get to know each other”, comments Principal, Brendon Fulton Andrew Mitchell, Head of Primary at Greenfield International School says, “We operate a half-day timetable during the first week for our youngest students to help them make the transition. During the first few days www.connector.ae
we also make sure there are lot of activities they like to do and get them involved in songs and games with the other students.” Programmes For Parents Schools organise dedicated sessions to inform parents on grade specific curriculum outlines and expectations in mathematics, reading and digital learning. Dean Pyrah of Victoria International School Sharjah says, “The school has a comprehensive program of information sessions regarding curriculum, wellbeing and school processes that run both in the previous academic year and within the first month of school. We also have one on one wellbeing-focused parent meeting in the first few weeks of school.” Sreekala Sureshkumar of GEMS Modern Academy says, “It is not unusual to find new parents spending the day in school simply soaking up the ambience! Parents of students in Transition years , especially in the senior sections of the school are met within the first two weeks of school re-opening in sessions that are aimed at helping them navigate through important details of the academic term ahead.” Parents are kept in regular contact with the school through letters from the principal with important updates and information about the school. Barry Cooper, Deputy Head Academic, Brighton College Dubai says, “We always have CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 35
KIDS & EDUCATION information sessions for our parents, but this year we will be going one step further and as the term develops, we plan to offer language and fitness sessions for the families of our children too.” Ramesh Mudgal, Principal, Global Indian International School, says, “School shares newsletters with parents giving them a snapshot of the previous month and the heads up on the upcoming month’s events and activities.” Special events are organised to introduce parents to one another. Fairgreen International School hosts a Supper Club evening in September as an opportunity for new and returning parents to mix and mingle. Andrew Mitchell of Greenfield Community School says, “Throughout the year we hold weekly coffee mornings, sometimes based on either primary or secondary priorities sometimes focusing on whole themes. These cover everything from assessment to discussing the results of the Dubai Well-being Survey and aim to provide useful information and advice as
36 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
well as hear the views of parents.” New Initiatives For The School Year With each new year, schools strive hard to improve what they do, how they do it and what they offer pupils, to make sure they contribute to the education industry as a whole. One example will see Victoria International School Sharjah transitioning across differt classes to teaching through more digital platforms. Sarah Brannon, Head of Preparatory School, Brighton College Dubai says, “We are looking forward to using our new 400m running track and the full size astro-turf rugby pitch inside it to support our pupils’ track and field opportunities.” Providing an excellent foundation for budding scientists, innovators, economists and engineers, Jackie Greenwood of Fairgreen International School says, “The school is launching two exciting programmes DEC - The Design, Engineer and Construct program (DEC) and Maths No Problem."

Keep your child healthy
during the academic year!
V
iruses and bacteria are the prime suspects behind many childhood illnesses, especially during school age. All it takes is a single child to bring a germ to class for the spread to commence. By teaching our children some essential healthy habits, we can help make health at school a priority during the academic year. Here are three precious tips on how to keep your child healthy: 1. Teach your child about proper handwashing As per the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teach your child to wash his hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with clean, running water and soap. After rinsing his hands under the running water, he should use a paper towel or an air dryer to dry his hands. If no running water is available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used instead. 2. Teach your child about covering his face on coughing or sneezing It is crucial for your child's health -and others- to learn to cover his cough or sneeze. Make sure you teach him to use a tissue to cover his face. If no tissue is handy, he may use his sleeve (but not his hands!) to cover his face. If you notice that your child is about to cough www.connector.ae
or sneeze, you can always remind him “Cover your mouth with your sleeve. 3. Teach your child not to share his personal items If you want to decrease your child's propensity to catch a cold or something much more serious, one good way is to teach him to keep his items personal. Items such as earphones, musical instruments, towels, sporting gear, and of course, water bottles should not be shared among classmates to minimize the risks of infection spread. Combating `Stomach Flu`:
N
truth and tips for parents
ow that school is in session, children can bring back home a `horde` of nasty germs and ailments. Amongst the most common of these is the `Stomach Flu`! The term `stomach flu` can be confusing for so many people. It is acute viral gastroenteritis capable of attacking the lining of the digestive tract and causing a myriad of distressing symptoms. The infection can easily spread through improper handwashing after using the bathroom or from caretakers who omit washing their hands properly after changing diapers or tasks of resemblance. Such viruses can lurk on toys or books and infect the next child. Moreover, the infection can happen by ingesting contaminated food or water. The stomach flu symptoms usually begin within one to two days after exposure and can last for one to 10 days. Nausea, vomiting and watery diarrhoea represent the hallmark symptoms of this viral gastroenteritis ailment. Other common complaints may include fever, tummy cramps, headache, and loss of appetite. The most dangerous consequence of stomach flu is dehydration. Focus mainly on getting your child to drink a lot of water, fluids (such as light soup) or over-the-counter oral hydration solutions to replace the fluids and electrolytes lost because of vomiting and diarrhoea. Start with small, frequent volumes and increase it gradually as tolerated. Do not try to force 38 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
down large amounts of fluid at one time, as this can induce vomiting. Avoid giving your child fizzy drinks or those high in sugar, as it can make diarrhoea worse. You can gradually start giving him semi-solid forms of food. Initially, some parents prefer a starchy diet comprising: Bananas, rice, potatoes, and toast. These foods may help ease diarrhoea. Others prefer steamed vegetables and boiled plain pasta. Take heart! Stomach flu is not a serious ailment for most. It is an infection that regresses spontaneously in the vast majority of cases, and without any lingering complications. My child is feverish;
shall I take him to the paediatrician right away? A
ll children get sick; this is part of being a child! Certain infections are very common in childhood, especially among school-aged children; common cold, influenza, throat infection (e.g. strep throat), middle ear infection, and viral gastroenteritis (known as stomach flu) to name but a few. Most if not all - have one symptom in common; fever! The normal body temperature range for children is 36.5°C-38°C (97-100.3°F), and it can fluctuate with playing, running around outside (especially during summer), and exercise. A fever is there when your child’s body temperature is above 38°C (100.4°F). It happens when the body's internal thermostat (inside the hypothalamus of the brain) is reset to a higher-than-usual temperature. When to see your child's paediatrician about a fever? Fever in a healthy child is not dangerous mostly, and it tends to regress completely within 3-4 days. The following inklings should be taken into consideration if your child has a fever: • Does your child have an apparent reason for the fever? A fever associated with runny nose and cough in a child who is still playful, eating reasonably, and sleeping well is not a reason for worry mostly (he likely has viral flu). • Does your child seem in a much better state www.connector.ae
once his temperature drops? While a high fever might not regress completely, it can drop partially by cold compresses and medication with your child feeling somewhat better. If not, this would be a good reason to consult your child's paediatrician. • Is your child showing no improvement? A fever lasting for four days with no signs of regressive symptoms would be another good reason to call your paediatrician. A rule of thumb, when it comes to your child’s health, it is always better to be safe than sorry! The Department of Paediatrics and Family Medicine THE DUBAI LONDON CLINIC AND SPECIALITY HOSPITAL

Your child`s sleep pattern
N
needs some attention now!
ow that the summer holiday is approaching its end, so are the nights of staying up late. At times, getting children to bed can be a struggle for parents, especially after the `liberties` of an extended vacation. There is a lot you can do to help your child bridge the `gap` and get the quality of sleep he needs. - Make it a family priority. Your child will imitate you, so set a good. By making sleep a priority for your self, this demonstrates for him that proper sleep is an integral constituent of a healthy lifestyle, and is as important as healthy eating and regular exercise. - Gradually shift bedtime back. To develop a healthy sleep pattern, it is recommended that you gradually move back your child’s bedtime by an hour every night, at least two before school starts, until your child is back to his proper bedtime routine - No technology before bedtime. Keep all electric devices - TVs, laptops, tablets, and cell phones out of your child`s bedroom, particularly at night. To prevent sleep disruption, turn off all screens at least one hour before bedtime. - Maintain a bedtime routine. Your child 40 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
will do better when he knows what to expect; consistency is the key. Choose a relaxing activity to do just before sleeping (such as reading a short bedtime story), and make it part of his nightly routine. - Beware of Caffeine. Caffeine may remain in your child`s system for eight to 10 hours and interfere with his ability to have a peaceful sleep. It is wise to keep your child`s caffeine consumption to a minimum. Check the ingredient list on foods and beverages your child is consuming for any hidden caffeine. The Department of Paediatrics and Family Medicine THE DUBAI LONDON CLINIC AND SPECIALITY HOSPITAL

Strep Throat;
a painful child's ailment during the school year! E
ven though strep throat can affect anyone, it is extremely common among school-age children and teenagers; 5 through 15 years old. This common and highly contagious infection occurs very often during the school year when large groups of students are in close contact with each other in classrooms. Caused by group A streptococcus bacteria, strep throat often leads to agonizing throat pain that is associated with difficult and painful swallowing or even speaking. High fever is very likely, and it tends to get worse a few days into the illness rather than improve. PROTECT YOUR CHILD AND OTHERS! While there is no vaccine against strep throat, there is a lot you can do to protect your child from this contagious and common school-age ailment: 1. Teach your child about proper handwashing. Hand washing is fundamental for preventing the spread of germs everywhere, including classrooms. Teach your child to wash his hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with clean, running water and soap. After rinsing his hands under the running water, he can dry it with paper towel or an air dryer. If no running water is available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used instead. 2. Teach your child about covering his face on www.connector.ae
coughing or sneezing. It is crucial for your child's health -and others- to learn to hide his cough or sneeze. Make sure you teach him to use a tissue to cover his face. If no tissue is handy, he may use his sleeve (but not his hands!) to cover his face. 3. Teach your child not to share his personal items. If you want to decrease your child's propensity for infection, one right way is to teach him to keep his things personal. Items such as earphones, musical instruments, towels, sporting gear, and of course, water bottles should not be shared among classmates to minimize the risks of infection spread. Keep your children safe.
get them vaccinated against the flu! T
he best way to protect against the flu and its potential health-threatening complications is for your child to receive the flu vaccine. Vaccination is recommended annually for all children aged six months and older who do not have any contraindication to the vaccine. Some minor side effects of the injectable flu vaccine include temporary local soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Rarely, some children may develop a fever or body aches that can last for one or two days. As a parent, it is imperative to understand that the vaccine cannot cause the flu as it contains inactivated (dead) influenza virus; your child is not going to be sick because he received the vaccine. Although vaccination is the most effective way to fight off the flu, making healthy choices at school can also play an additional role in protecting your child from the flu. Teach your child to wash his hands properly and regularly, especially before eating his lunch and after using the bathroom. Remind him to wash his hands after sneezing or coughing or to use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Teach your child to cough or sneeze into his elbow so that the germs do not end up on his hands. Last but never least, remind your child not to share his personal items, especially drinking cups or water bottles. It is difficult to predict who will catch the flu, but 42 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
vaccination remains the most effective and safe tool to reduce the probability of your child getting sick with the flu. HEALTH & WELLBEING
On your journey to fitness
here’s how not to get injured
W hen we sign up for a gym or a workout class, we have fitness goals. That’s a good thing, however, problem arises when we want to achieve those goals in a shorter period than required. The focus shifts from achieving results by hook or crook rather than the core focus area of working out in a healthy way. Another problem comes when we combine various ideas and opinions, from what we know, what we hear and what we read online and follow a combination of practices that may not always be right and get ourselves injured. Injuries do not only halt the fitness journey but can also cause some irreversible pains. Connector spoke with field experts to get you aware on what it takes to exercise in a healthy way. Things To Take Into Consideration While Exercising If you are a newbie to exercise, do follow www.connector.ae
a few instructions before and when you start your workout. Simple steps will keep the motivation high, keep you going and save you from any potential injuries. A few recommendations include: Tips For Beginners: • Undergo a complete physical check-up. “Before you begin an exercise program, you should undergo a physical check-up, especially if you have an existing medical condition such as heart disease, diabetes, or fibromyalgia. Depending on your condition, a doctor may want your exercise regime to be tailored specifically”, suggests Dr Sanjay Sureen, Specialist Orthopedics Surgeon at Prime Hospital. • Begin your training gradually and don’t push yourself too hard. Don’t exert yourself beyond your level of fitness. Gradually increase intensity and duration of training.“If you push too hard at the start, your muscles CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 49
HEALTH & WELLBEING will be sore for days and you may feel sick. This also could sap your motivation”, suggests Dr Sanjay Sureen of Prime Hospital • If you are uncertain about where to begin, consult a fitness trainer who can help fashion a program to your needs. • Begin the exercise with a warming up session and end it with a cool down. “A proper exercise program should always include a warm up in the beginning and cool down in the end for 5 to 10 minutes. The warm up should include some stretching exercises especially for the body part that you are planning to use during the exercises. It can also include for example 5 minutes on the bicycle or walking on the treadmill on a low intensity. The cool down can be done again on the bicycle or light jogging for a few minutes and the stretching exercises if comfortable”, suggests Cornelia Gloor, Physiotherapist and Head of Department at RAK Hospital Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Center. Diet Tips • Consume adequate antioxidants such as vitamins C and E to protect against free radicals. • Choose drinks that replace fluids plus essential electrolytes. • Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after the workout Attire Tips • Dress appropriately according to the weather condition. 50 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
• Avoid very tight clothing • Wear shoes with good heel support which are flat with non-skid soles and enough room for toes. Also check them regularly and replace when they are worn out. • Tape or strap vulnerable joints, if necessary. • Use the appropriate safety equipment, such as mouth guards, helmets and pads. Things To Avoid Try to avoid exercising in the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm. “Exercising in hot and humid conditions may lead to overheating and dehydration. Slow your pace and dress up yourself accordingly”, advises Sara Mateus, Senior Physiotherapist at Mediclinic Al Sufouh. Things That Would Keep You Going • Exercise with someone who is in about the same shape as you are. You may get discouraged otherwise. • Choose activities you enjoy. If exercise isn’t fun, you won’t do it for long. • Vary your routine to keep you from getting bored, such as walking 10km every other day and lifting weights on the days you don’t walk. • Cross-train with other sports to ensure overall fitness and muscle strength. • Allow adequate recovery time between sessions. • Rest, especially whenever you start to #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING feel sick or extremely tired and also schedule regular days off from exercise. Common Workout Injuries Sports injuries happen when the direct force on the body is more than it can handle. Sports injuries are widely divided into two: acute and chronic. “An injury that occurs suddenly, such as a sprained ankle caused by an awkward landing, is known as an acute injury. Chronic injuries are caused by repeated overuse of muscle groups or joints. Poor technique and structural abnormalities can also contribute to the development of chronic injuries. Medical investigation of any sports injury is important, because you may be hurt more severely than you think. For example, what seems like an ankle sprain may actually be a bone fracture”, explains Dr Iyad Jamil Khalil Al-Souri, Consultant Orthopedic Surgery at Zulekha Hospital It is good to know some of the most common workout injuries. Sprains are overstretched or torn ligaments that support your joints such as your ankle, knee or wrist. Dr Firdaus Manzar, General Practitioner, Aster Clinic, Discovery Gardens says, “Knee injuries such as ligament tears can occur if you land awkwardly from a jump or stop suddenly or receive a direct blow on your knee or suddenly slow down or change directions during a fast movement. Ankle sprains are generally caused by sudden www.connector.ae
twisting of your leg. It occurs when your ankle is forced to move out of its normal position. Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is a painful condition of elbow caused by overuse, playing badminton, tennis or other racquet sports can cause this condition” Strains are generally less severe than sprains and occur when you stretch your muscles or tendons more than you should. Muscle cramps are painful, involuntary contractions of muscles that can occur just about anywhere in the body. Overuse and repetitive motion can lead to inflammation. Bursitis, fasciitis and tendonitis are inflammatory conditions common to athletes. Shin splints cause acute pain in the shin and lower leg, caused by prolonged running typically on a hard surface. Dehydration is losing too much fluid and can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stress fractures are particularly in the lower limbs. They can be caused from the impact of repeated jumping or running on hard surfaces which can eventually stress and crack bones. Common Workout Mistakes That Lead To Injuries Above: Don’t let all your hard work go to waste. Stop committing these common mistakes almost everyone makes. “Common mistakes people make when exercising are incorrect footwear, skipping rest CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 51
HEALTH & WELLBEING days, ignoring a balanced diet, not warming up or down, not pushing hard enough, pushing too hard, repetitive motions, not concentrating on technique and not enjoying the workout”, says Dr Iyad Jamil Khalil Of Zulekha Hospital. Wether you are lifting weights or performing yoga, a correct posture is the key to achieving the desirable results, alas, it is among the most common thing people generally fail to do so. Therefore it is advisable to start your workout with a trained professional as wrong postures put pressure on muscles leading to muscle spasms or joint injuries. Sara Mateus, of Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “The common exercise mistakes are generally related with excessive weight load and/ or poor technique. To maximise the expected results of the workouts it’s important to perform the exercises slowly and in a controlled manner throughout the entire range of motion and within a comfort zone.” Dr Firdaus Manzar of Aster Clinic, Discovery Gardens further talks on other common mistakes as follows: “Quantity but no quality: Half of the people working out don't know the correct way of exercising. They aimlessly exert their body and end up with injuries. Overestimating your exercise: Most people overestimate their exercise intensity and time, the frequency of their workouts and the amount of calories burnt. Underestimating your food: Many people are in denial about the type of food they eat. They require energy to do high intensity work 52 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
outs but the type of food they eat does not meet the body's energy requirement hence people end up fainting, being dizzy and feeling weak. Setting unrealistic goals: Setting unrealistic goals which are impossible to achieve leaves you exhausted and disappointed” What To Do If You Get Hurt When Exercising Regardless of your fitness levels and preventive measures, anyone can face a sudden workout injury. Don’t panic, consult a doctor and follow simple steps. Dr Sanjay Sureen of Prime Hospital says,”Follow the RICE method to keep your injury from getting worse: R: Rest the injury. I: Ice the injury to lessen swelling, bleeding, and inflammation. C: Apply a compression bandage to minimise swelling. E: Elevate the injury, if possible, to reduce swelling.” However, do not confuse normal muscles soreness post workout with injury. “Noteworthy that delayed onset muscle soreness, usually known as DOMS, is a normal response from the muscles after exercising starting 12 to 24 hours after a workout and should not be confused with injury. Seek for medical help in case of persistent/intense pain that starts during exercise or take more than a week to fade away, or inability to move a part of the body”, Sara Mateus of Mediclinic Al Sufouh. #connectordubai
ADVISE FROM THE EXPERT-HEALTHBAY
Making healthcare marketing work W
ith over 7 years of Marketing experience in private healthcare, Supriya Taggar, a marketing and business development manager for HealthBay shares with us the challenges, tactics and creation of making healthcare marketing work in the U.A.E Q: When it comes to marketing in the UAE, what are the main factors to consider? A: The UAE is such a fast, developing and diverse country that it is important to start with the fundamentals which includes analysing your market, segmenting your target audience, understanding regulations, factoring effective social media and developing quality content. Q: What would you say has been your biggest challenge? A: The biggest challenge for me, especially coming from the U.K has been understanding the regulations. Messaging that may have worked in a Western country, may not work or be appropriate in the Middle East. There are approvals that have to be sought from recognized departments such as The Ministry of Health and the Dubai Health Authority. Rather than gaining revenue, you have to build trust with your target audience, delivery quality and become a leader in the industry. Once you www.connector.ae
capture the essence of these important factors, the venue follows. Q: What method if you had to choose one would you say has been a success? A: Social media. It is one of the biggest platforms out there to convey your message, share creative content and connect with your audience with the click of a button. In this digital era, it is one of the most effective tools to reach people all over the world. You can connect with your audience by uploading videos, posting information and encouraging others to share their thoughts on something that is so primitive- healthcare. HEALTH & WELLBEING
Cellulite and why
it is alright to have it
What Is Cellulite? Cellulite is a condition where fat sitting under our skin causes lumpy appearance and as we age, the skin becomes thinner and the lumps and bumps become more visible. Some of the factors which may contribute to develop cellulite are genetic, hormonal, ageing and eating habits. Excess intake of fat and carbohydrates can lead to the condition of cellulite. In a more scientific yet simpler term, Kanta Jethwani, CEO of Bloom Aesthetic and Laser Clinic explains, “Every person has a network of connective-tissue strands, called septae, that hold the fat in place. In some people, the septae aren’t strong and tightly woven together due to genetic factors, which results in fat bulging out between them. As a result, the skin appears to have ripples that are scientifically referred to as cellulite.” We are most likely to get cellulite where we have high concentrated fat and in the case of 54 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
most of the women, the problem area nonarguably lies around thighs and buttocks. “In simpler terms, cellulite is a condition of enlarged fat cells that sit under the skin making it look bumpy. This type of fat is most commonly accumulated in areas where there is a high fat-to-muscle ratio, especially the buttocks, hips and thighs”, adds Kanta Jetwani. Dr Vimi Ponnamparambath, Specialist Dermatologist at Aster Beauty Clinic, Warqa says, “Cellulite occurs when underlying fat deposits begin to push through layers of collagen fibers, or connective tissue, under the skin. It is often present in the buttocks and thigh areas, but also on the arms and stomach as well.” It is a myth that your lifestyle and weight gain has nothing to do with getting cellulite. However, you should not confuse cellulite with obesity. Kanta Jethwani of Bloom Aesthetic and #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING Laser Clinic further explains, “When a person gains weight, the accumulated fat deposits under the skin become larger, creating the dimpling effect on the body referred to as “orange-peel” or “cottage cheese”. As people get older, their skin becomes thinner and therefore exposes the appearance of cellulite.” Who Is More Likely To Get Cellulite? Three common determinants of who gets cellulite are gender, age and lifestyle. Commonly, women are more vulnerable to cellulite because of frequent hormonal imbalances and it’s a rare occurrence in men. The condition can be only be seen in men when they face intense hormonal changes in their body. Dr Vimi Ponnamparambath, Specialist Dermatologist at Aster Beauty Clinic, Warqa says, “The condition affects nearly 90% of women at some point during their lives, even women who are otherwise slender and fit. Women tend to carry more fat around their hips and thighs and have less supportive connective tissue compared to men Hormones also seem to play a role in the appearance of cellulite: As women age, their bodies produce less estrogen a hormone that helps keep blood vessels flowing smoothly. Less estrogen can mean poorer circulation, which can also mean a decrease in new collagen production and the breakdown of older connective tissue leading to the formation of cellulite.” www.connector.ae
Nisha Praveen, Laser Therapist, Aesthetica Clinic, Dubai says, “Cellulite can affect both men and women but it is more common in women due to the difference in distribution of fat muscle and connective tissue in them.” Women's body structure is also one of the reasons that women are more likely to get cellulite than men. “Women are more likely to get cellulite because they have fewer and less tightly arranged septae, which are more noticeable due to their thin skin. Additionally, the strength of their septae and size of fat cells are affected by hormones. While cellulite can also be found in men, its occurrence is rare and mostly found amongst men with severe hormonal change”, says Kanta Jethwani of Bloom Aesthetic and Laser Clinic. What Is The Most Important Thing About Cellulite That People Should Know? Cellulite is considered to be a worse word than it really is. Therefore it is important to know that it is only a cosmetic condition and has no fatal consequences or health complications at all. Nisha Praveen of Aesthetica Clinic, Dubai says, “Cellulite does not necessarily impact overall health of the person. It is a cosmetic condition which the affected person may feel embarrassed in front of others.” One of the most important things people CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 55
HEALTH & WELLBEING need to understand is that cellulite does not only occur to people who have some extra body weight. It could happen to anybody even somebody who is lean, although it does become more noticeable if you are overweight. Another common misconception people have is that self-medicating with the use of skin tightening and firming creams will help with treating cellulite. This is definitely not true because no cream has shown to have permanent effects on cellulite. Consult with a dermatologist and understand what can be done to manage the condition. How To Avoid Getting Cellulites? The only dimples we really want are the ones on our cheeks. To avoid others, there are a number of thing we can do to avoid them. “A healthy diet, exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight will help in the prevention of cellulite formation. Your diet alone can't determine whether you will or will not get cellulite but eating a well-balanced diet will help you maintain a healthy weight. Staying hydrated, both by drinking water and by eating plenty of foods with high water content, will also keep your connective tissue strong and supple, and may even help you slim down. A regular exercise practice cannot cure cellulite, but in many cases it can help prevent or reduce its appearance. Cellulite occurs when connective fibres underneath the skin become weak or lose their elasticity but stretching and strengthening those areas 56 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
(in addition to burning away excess fat overall) can help. Firming and toning those muscles will in turn tighten the skin, giving the illusion that cellulite is less noticeable advises Dr Vimi Ponnamparambath of Aster Beauty Clinic, Warqa. What Cellulite Treatments Are Available? There are a number of treatments available which can reverse the cellulite effects temporarily. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the cellulite and also the desired results. To improve cellulite, you can consult with a doctor to choose one of the following methods that best suit your needs. Kanta Jethwani of Bloom Aesthetic and Laser Clinic suggests a few non-surgical treatments available at her clinic: Coffee wrap: Boost natural collagen and elastin production through the penetration of coffee into the skin. Acoustic wave therapy: Reduce fluid retention and break down solid fat molecules through low energy shock waves that are sent through fat tissue. Radio-frequency treatment: Improve production of collagen and reduce appearance of cellulite through skin heating radio waves. Mesotherapy: Significantly reduce the appearance of cellulite by undertaking 10 sessions of mesotherapy Other non-invasive treatments suggested by #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING Dr Vimi Ponnamparambath of. Aster Beauty Clinic, Warqa include: Endermologie cellulite treatment, which is a non-invasive procedure which uses a hand-held machine, equipped with rollers and gentle suction, to massage the problem areas and stimulate the skin for collagen production Cellulaze, approved by the FDA in 2012, is a procedure in which an optic laser melts fat, breaks up fibrous connective tissue and stimulates the growth of new collagen. Dr Luis Ayala, Specialist Plastic Surgeon at CosmeSurge says, "I have my own technique to treat cellulite which involves a simple procedure, performed under local anesthesia to avoid any pain. As part of the procedure a special needle is inserted in the problem area that will treat the root cause of the problem. I cut what I call "the guitar strings" these "strings" pull the skin down after I inject a little bit of fat which is extracted from the same patient. The procedure has witnessed a success rate of 75-80%, which is higher compared to traditional techniques (30-45%) All the patients treated using this technique have experienced positive results."

Home Remedies To Treat Cellulites Even though, no science backs up the healing effects of home remedies, however, a few natural remedies without any severe side-effects claim to reduce cellulite that include: • Drinking apple cider vinegar can reduce cellulite and some creams containing caffeine and seaweed are effective against cellulite. • Dry brushing your skin can help liquify solid fat deposits and facilitate an even distribution. Consistently using this method may help reduce the appearance of cellulite. • Water is essential for the survival of all living beings and cells. Keeping an optimal hydration level by drinking water and herbal teas will help reduce and prevent the appearance of further cellulite. • One of the most effective ways to prevent and cure cellulite is to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain a diet that is low in carbohydrates but rich in healthy fats. • Massaging the problem area with coconut oil helps.

YOGA
What you need to do
to get started with yoga at home
W hile it is always advisable to learn the fundamentals of yoga in a live classroom, there’s nothing better than practicing yoga from the comfort of your home, if fighting traffic to make it your class post work is not your thing. Twenty minutes of yoga at home is way more beneficial than driving to a crowded yoga class, sometimes the experience is not as peaceful as it should be when you literally struggle to find a space for your mat. Here’s a few things you should know, before you start to practice yoga at home Choose a yoga style Some styles of yoga follow a set sequence of specific poses, but I recommend a more openended approach, especially when you're doing yoga at home. If you are fatigued, you may want to do a more restorative yoga sequence. If you're feeling energetic, a more flowing, fast-paced or rigorous set of yoga poses may feel more satisfying or help you channel that energy. Many like to do an energising yoga practice in the morning and a calming restorative practice in the evening. 62 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
Set up a space Choose or create a quiet, uncluttered space in your home for your practice, and stock it with the essential basic yoga props - mat, strap, blocks, blanket, bolster, etc. The space doesn’t have to be large, but a quiet, clean, open space is advised. Set realistic goals and be consistent The best approach is make your yoga part of your morning ritual. This means getting to bed 15 minutes earlier so your yoga practice does not cut into your sleep time. Sit down with your weekly calendar and begin to cross out any activity that is not serving you anymore. Companionship and support system Practice with a member of your family or a friend. Being held accountable by others can get you to the mat on the dreariest of days. Once you get to the mat, the magic often takes over after a couple of minutes, and you find yourself vibrating with the music of yoga. Inputs from a Yoga Expert from Fitness First #connectordubai
TRIED & TESTED
A new Ayurveda centre brings
century old treatments on forefront A yur Mandala Ayurveda Center was established in 2017 on Al Wasl Road to offer Ayurvedic treatments in Dubai. In brief, Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems developed more than 3,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit, which can be achieved by balancing three life forces or energies, called doshas. They are Vata dosha (space and air); Pitta dosha (fire and water); and Kapha dosha (water and earth). Every person is made of five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water and earth, and balancing these five elements make a body disease free. The spa has more than a hundred treatments including various massages based on Ayurveda science. Ayurveda licensed doctor, Dr Jayalakshmi Jayaraj, sits down with us for a fifteen minute consultancy session explaining the science and understanding our lifestyle to suggest a massage or a treatment. www.connector.ae
We go ahead with ‘Shirodhara’ an Ayurvedic forehead oil treatment, which is used to relax the mind and is also suggested for patients of anxiety and depression with repeated sessions (a minimum of fifteen in a month to balance the doshas). During this treatment, the full body is massaged with warm herb infused oils for sixty minutes and, then for thirty minutes a special Ayurveda oil, made-up of various herbs, is poured in a continuous stream on the forehead using a special rhythmic movement with a gentle head massage. The strokes for the body massage are kept harder to prevent you from dozing off. However, the magical part comes with the second part of the massage, which we can relate to a spiritual experience, from getting no sleep at all during the massage, to getting transported to a different state of mind, we truly call it our Zen moment. The treatment cost Dhs 550. Call 04-3363637. CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 63

PERSONAL FINANCE
Find out the best way
to remit money from the UAE
T he United Arab Emirates UAE is the world’s largest outbound remitter to all countries around the world with a high expat population that come to the country to leverage tax free salaries. As all expats are bound to go back to their home countries one day, they prefer to save money in their own currency than in the Emirates for a number of reasons. The good part of being an expat here is that, you have just too many options to send your hard earned Dirhams overseas. The money transfer industry is just too competitive here. According to recent data from the Central Bank of the UAE, “Dhs 39.9 billion were sent to home countries by residents in the fourth quarter of 2018 with Indians sending 34.2 per cent of total remittances in that period followed by Pakistan and the Philippines. The competitive industry and advancement in technology helps keep the costs down as well as make the process of remittance more convenient and faster. However, it’s not as simple as it may look. 66 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR
There are things you are supposed to cross check to get the best rate and not get charged with hidden charges, high fees and high currency exchange rates that pinch. Further in this feature, we discuss a few things to be careful about when sending money back home, as well as different ways of remitting the cash overseas. Here’s What To Be Careful About: Before we jump to the options, let’s get familiar with the common things we need to know. Sending money overseas is not a tough task, however, a little research can pay well. Stay Updated On Current Exchange Rates It is important to know the current exchange rates of your currency to evaluate the transaction costs beforehand. Download apps such as XE which update the latest currency exchange rates. This little step will help you make a decision on when is the right time to send money back. With the same amount of Dirhams, you #connectordubai
PERSONAL FINANCE can send more money back home in your own currency. Carry Out Legal Research There are a number of exchange houses which offer attractive rates to lure customers, but are not registered with the regulatory bodies. Transferring money through these exchange houses is quite risky, therefore do proper research to avoid losses and falling into the trap of fake money exchange houses. Evaluate Each Option Once you have all the remittance options handy, evaluate and compare each option. Discuss the costs, negotiation parameters and assess the time it takes to transfer money before you make a final choice. The Options To Send Money Back Home There are three popular ways to send money from the UAE- bank transfers, exchange houses and online transfers. Exchange Houses It is the most popular way to send money overseas. According to the Central Bank report, it accounts for almost 75% of remittance transactions. There are many registered exchange firms such as UAE Exchange, Al Ansari Exchange, LuLu Exchange, Al Ghurair Exchange, Al Fardan Exchange, GCC Exchange, Al Ansari, Wall St Exchange, Western Union, and many more. These exchange houses offer different transfer services-including bank-to-bank, www.connector.ae
cash-to-cash and transfers to wallets, however the best deals are often found on bank-to-bank transfer rather than cash. There is usually a flat fee per transaction, which generally ranges and depends on the country of remittance and exchange house. Compare the rates before you choose any service to send money back home. Where possible, it is recommended to secure a better exchange rate by sending large amounts in one go rather than small amounts multiple times. Do your maths before you send money. Also, as mentioned, there can be hidden charges at some exchange houses so pay close attention to what an exchange house is offering and ask as many questions you can to get the clearer picture. Not every exchange house will have hidden charges, it’s just advisable to ask questions. You can also try to bargain down to the best possible rate when sending money through an exchange house. If you are remitting huge amounts or the exchange house is looking to make you a regular customer, they might offer you a better rate than what they display in store. As any bank has better rates for their priority customers, likewise the exchange houses also offer better rates than the regular ones to their priority customers. The exchanges offer customers to be a member of their loyalty programme that offers benefits including competitive rates, a dedicated relationship manager, a doorstep service and priority CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 67
PERSONAL FINANCE treatment when you visit a branch. The entry to the loyalty programme depends on your salary and eligibility varies between exchange houses. Banks Banks are generally considered to be the safest option as the level of risk and fraud involved is almost nil. In the past few years, UAE banks have rolled out special services catering to their customers looking for options to remit money. These products give more competitive rates when compared with an exchange house. Emirates NBD launched its DirectRemit product in 2014, which can be used to send money to the top listed countries of remittance: India, Pakistan and the Philippines, in as little as 60 seconds. The bank rolled out its service in the UK as well in 2018. Likewise Mashreq Bank offers Quick Remit
services which can be used to send money in seconds to banks in India and Pakistan. Experts also suggest to open bank accounts with international banks in Dubai that have a branch in their home countries to get more attractive transfer deals. Online Transfers Another popular method of sending money is through online international platforms such as Currency Fair or Moneycorp. These platforms receive Dirhams in the overseas bank account and can transfer them to your local account in local currency at a cheaper rate than a regular international transfer. The margins are more attractive than banks offer. The flip side is the process is slower than a bank and exchange house and you need to make sure that your bank in the UAE transfers Dirhams to the overseas account rather than exchanging them automatically to your local currency.
