Welcome to Dubai Welcome to Dubai, one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic skyscrapers, the world’s tallest tower, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story, as is this young country itself.

About the UAE

Just 45 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.

Location

The UAE is an Arabian Peninsula nation along the Arabian Gulf. It borders Oman to the east and Saudi Arabia to the south.

Founding father of the UAE

His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a driving force behind www.discover-dubai.ae

the formation of the federation, was the first President of the UAE.

Government

The UAE is a constitutional federation. It is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the Vice-President and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Religion

The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.

Population

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.7 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relaxed, relatively crime-free lifestyle. DISCOVER DUBAI AUGUST | 3

Welcome to Dubai

City basics Local time

The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving.

Currency

The local currency is the Emirati dirham (commonly written as AED or DHS on menus and price tags), and it is pegged to the US dollar. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Tip: always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

Money exchange and banking:

Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday and operate shorter hours on Saturday. They are closed on Fridays. The exchange rates (at the time of going to press) are: One USD = Dhs 3.67 One GBP = Dhs 4.76 One Euro = Dhs 4.08

Here are some Arabic phrases to help you: Hello - marhaba Welcome - ahlan wa sahlan Goodbye - maa-salaama Yes - naam No - laa Please - min fadlak Thank you - shukran You’re welcome - afwan God willing - in shaa'Allah 6 | AUGUST DISCOVER DUBAI

Photography The UAE has strict laws, and taking pictures or videos is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.

Public display of affection The UAE is an Islamic country, and these acts are offensive and will land you in serious trouble. Refrain from hugging or kissing in public places.

Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. A good rule of thumb is to have your knees and shoulders covered.

Alcohol may be consumed at licensed outlets. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol. #discover_dxb

Emirati dress Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.

Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.

Taxis It is recommended women sit in the rear seat unless they are using pink taxis (driven by women and designated for women and children).

Emirati men wear a

kandura, a long white

robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura. Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. Welcome to Dubai

Life in the past The heritage houses of Al-Fahidi, with their wind towers decorating the Bur Dubai skyline and their impressive interior courtyards, are a wonderment to explore. As you walk around the alleyways (sikka), that turn and intertwine, you feel as though you are in a secret maze. Standing within this neighborhood, once called Bastakia by its original inhabitants who built it, you experience a Dubai which you only hear about as you walk in the malls, stare at the skyscrapers or race down the eight and ten lane roads. ‘Dubai is very historical,’ they say. ‘Dubai is a mix of old and new,’ they reason. Yet few take the time to witness the old, protected and beloved historical sections. For those of us working within their gypsum walls, they are an escape from the modern world. The Al-Fahidi district is named after its fort which was used as a garrison to protect Dubai from invaders. The area was a haven 8 | AUGUST DISCOVER DUBAI

from tribal skirmishes and outside aggression for those deeming the creek a port of call, tucked away from the monsoons and on the terribly long maritime trade route between Asia, Africa and Europe. At the end of the wall of the fort settled a group of people. They were invited by Dubai’s sheikh to build their homes in what was the original financial district of Dubai, just down from the Ruler's House and currently behind the Ruler's Court. They were the merchants, building their houses along the creek, where the cargo came in before our larger ports were built, just a short walk from the Grand Souq - the Dubai Mall of the 1800s. They were perfectly positioned to do business, trade and flourish into the leading merchant, exchange and real estate families we know today. Yet these houses were unlike any others you find in modern times. They are the far from the mass produced, #discover_dxb

identical houses that pop up in hundreds at a time. The courtyard houses of Al-Fahidi were built around the family and each house was unique. Through a massive wooden door, you would pass a room or two for greeting visitors. Then there was an interior door or a wall shielding the courtyard. Sun, breeze and sometimes rain would fill the interior of the home. For as much as the sun brings the heat, the rest of nature would bring the cold. Ringed around the courtyard were rooms for family members; each housing the parents, the children and their spouses and the grandchildren. In one or two of these rooms, the ceiling would open up to a two-storey tower, with the top extending a storey above the roof. There sits a cube, open on four sides and covered on the top, with all four corners connected. The breeze hits from either side and shoots down the shaft into the room. The result: the temperature in the room would be at least 10 degrees cooler. Hang wet fabric to its frame and the room becomes even cooler. Open the doors to the room and the wind-pull can be felt through the home. Unlike the Bedouins of the desert who could lower their tent sides for shade or raise them on one side to capture the breeze or even lift all sides to release the heat, the hadther - settled people - had to rely on these towers to 'catch the breeze' so they could survive the heat. Being www.discover-dubai.ae

businessmen, they didn't have the freedom to move around like the Bedouins. They needed to stay in one place. The neighborhood itself was designed to 'make breeze' and not just capture it. Based on what we now know about ‘windy cities’, the sikka pathways curve as well. This is not a neighborhood built on a square grid like some modern cities. These sikkas pulled air into the neighborhood as each walkway ended up curving like the shape of a fan blade. Walking around this area you notice, it is windy in the interior; the leaves are always moving and the flags always rippling. When the original houses, prior to air conditioning, opened their windows, they could also capture this breeze. A walk through the old Bastakia of Al Fahidi District will have you witnessing a lifestyle of shade, wind and community which the wealth of modern life has deemed unnecessary or else is the missing link to interior comfort for some. There is much more to these houses; the art work, the windows, the pillars and beams, aside from cooling the families, provided an element of beauty. They reflect the era gone by. They were not architects of shelter alone but of a culture. With thanks to Salamah Ghudayer from the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Welcome to Dubai

When in Dubai…

What to try…

What to buy…

Now that you’re in the city, it would be a shame if you left without trying Emirati food. Between all the meals you’re going to indulge in, make sure you leave some space for:

Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, the ones you really should be after are:

Machboos Though this rice dish originated in Saudi Arabia, it is common to see it at Emirati dinner tables. The dish is made with long-grain rice, meat, vegetables and spices, and is sometimes garnished with a tomato sauce.

Bukhoor These are wood chips soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality.

Luqaimat A very popular Emirati dessert, these round deep-fried dough dumplings are less fluffy than doughnuts and are soaked in date or sugar syrup, flavoured with saffron and cardamom.

Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques using wool from camels and goats, this fabric is easily distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black and white.

Camel milk In the past, Bedouins survived solely on camel milk. It can be bought in bottles in supermarkets around the country, and is available in flavours such as saffron, date, chocolate and strawberry.

Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Note: the packaged ones can be eaten year round.

Souks Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three worth ticking off the list when you're in Dubai. Dubai is geographically divided into two parts - Deira and Bur Dubai - by Dubai Creek. Deira, home to Dubai’s oldest markets, can be accessed by road, but the alternate (also traditional) way would be by abra. These small barges are powered by diesel engines and can seat around 20 people. Incidentally, Dubai's work force commute across the creek on a regular basis and there are over 17,500 abra crossings per day. If you decide to travel on one and are wearing expensive or light-coloured clothing, it's advisable to remain standing for the trip as the bench seats can get a little grubby.

Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes, they also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops.

Spice Souk Once you land on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a working souq which sells goods to locals and sailors from the dhows and is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes.

Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and with no taxes and low import duties, it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain.

Four to try... Holistic therapies

Everyone deserves a break and that’s probably why you’re on holiday in Dubai. Between all the fun stuff you get up to, here are four holistic treatments to help you look after your body and mind while you’re in this city.

Aromatherapy

Ayurveda

Ear candling

Reflexology

Prices start from Dhs 375 (60 minutes) and from Dhs 495 (90 minutes). www.spacordon.com

Al Asalla Spa, Dubai Ladies Club, Jumeirah Beach Road. This ladies-only spa offers ear candling, a practice claimed to improve well-being by lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal. The light suction and gentle vibrations created induce a feeling of warmth and relaxation. Nothing like Dubai’s intense summer though. It costs Dhs 140. www.dubailadiesclub.com 40 | AUGUST DISCOVER DUBAI

Dubai Herbal & Treatment Centre; Oud Metha. Abyangam is a detoxifying Ayurvedic massage. The hour-long whole-body massage is performed symmetrically using herbal oils and is followed by a medicated steam bath. Working out with a buddy Finding it hard to work out alone or perhaps you don’t feel motivated enough? Break down the barriers that prevent us from exercising more regularly. One of the best ways to get back into exercise or keep active in the long term is to work out with a friend. Studies have shown that exercising is greatly enhanced when you are with a buddy or in a group setting. Working out with a buddy provides the encouragement you need to get off the couch and head to the gym. Exercising together helps you stay motivated, promotes healthy competition and makes your sessions so much more enjoyable. Some of benefits of working with another individual are: Motivation: Friends can provide an extra boost of motivation when you just feel like giving up, or on the days when you don’t feel like hitting the gym. Waking up in the morning to train can be hard sometimes, but nobody wants to let their friend down and leave them at the gym alone! Just make sure they return the favour! Two-person exercises: One of the top benefits is that a workout partner can help you broaden the scope of what can you do in the gym. Try ab crunches with a medicine ball pass or partner push ups with a high five – the possibilities are practically endless.

way. Get into a routine with a friend and learn new tricks that they might be using while working out or even try new classes together. Were you too tired to try that new TUFF or 6D at Fitness First? Take your workout buddy, and brave it together. Competition: Researches shows that people who work out with someone they perceive as better or stronger than they are, increases their intensity and workout time by as much as 200 percent. There is nothing better than a little friendly competition and it will help push you over the finish line... or to the end of that RPM class. Avoiding injury: Working out with a friend means someone has your back. Your workout partner can count reps, check your form and help you with positional adjustments. Your technique should improve when working out with someone who knows what to look out for. Friends watching your technique can also help you avoid any painful mistakes. Make sure to follow Fitness First Middle East on Facebook & Instagram for up-todate tips and exercises or visit their website at uae.fitnessfirstme.com.

More fun: Some of the workouts using treadmills and the bench press aren’t the most exciting ways to pass time, but with a partner, get your heart racing with activities like running or even one-on-one basketball or racquetball. Practice timed incline sprints with your partner, and don’t let each other quit! New activities: Friends can teach you new exercises or circuits and they can point out things you might be doing wrong along the www.discover-dubai.ae

Dubai's culinary gems

You don’t have to empty your pockets to enjoy a good meal, especially not when you’re in Dubai. While the city has many top-notch restaurants, including those by celebrity chefs and imports from New York and London, it is also the turf to homegrown eateries. These places might be little in size but we assure you they dish out food big on flavour.

Al Ustad Special Kebab Around since 1978, this Iranian restaurant is no secret to ardent foodies. The restaurant specialises in South Iranian cuisine, mainly kebabs and chicken and meat dishes. At any given point, one of the three brothers will always be around to greet diners, take orders and involve themselves in friendly banter. It is normal to be distracted by photos that are plastered on the walls and memorabilia such as clocks and mobile phones hung on the walls. Currencies from around the world are lined under the glass top tables. You haven't enjoyed your kebabs if you didn't have them with a side of rice, drizzled with melted butter and topped with barberries. Mains range between Dhs 25 and Dhs 32. Mankhool road, near Al Fahidi Mentro station, in Bur Dubai. Call 04-3971933. Ravi Restaurant Most people say you haven’t eaten in Dubai if you haven’t eaten at Ravi’s…and we agree! This no-frills institution serves the best Pakistani food in the city. For what the restaurant lacks in interior (expect plastic chairs and covers), it makes up in its meatheavy menu. The curries are flavourful, the biryani rice is fragrant and the dal is as silky as it gets. For a service team that barely speaks English, you'd be happy to know they rarely get their orders wrong. Most dishes are priced under Dhs 25. near Satwa roundabout, opposite Emirates Co-operative Society. Call 04-3315353. 44 | AUGUST DISCOVER DUBAI

Sind Punjab Indian restaurants are a dime a dozen in Dubai, but it is safe to say that none nail Indian street food the way Sind Punjab does. Ditch sitting indoors for a space by the glass counter where you stand and wait for the server to make you pani puri (a crisp hollow round street snack that’s filled with onion,

potatoes, chickpeas and flavoured water). The challenge is getting the entire piece in your mouth at one go. Other street food items on the menu include samosas, chaat (savoury snacks) and pakodas (fritters). Prices start as low as Dhs 2. Meena Bazaar, Bur Dubai. Call 04-3525058. Local House Restaurant It would be a shame if you left Dubai without sinking your teeth into camel meat. Often categorised as ‘comfort food’, Emiratis serve camel meat when a child is born or when there’s a death in the family. This tender and juicy meat is used as patties in burgers at Local House Restaurant. You can have additional fillings ranging from fried egg #discover_dxb

and salsa to mushrooms and caramelised onions. Up for something heartier? Try the camel meat biryani or kebab. Tip: if you haven’t warmed up to the idea of the meat, the camel milk shake is a good start (psst... it's high in mineral content and unsaturated fatty acids). The restaurant is a popular pit stop for tourists wandering the heritage site it's located at. Camel meat based dishes start from Dhs 45. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Call 04-3540705.

Al Reef The go-to place after a night out, Al Reef is busiest in the early hours of the morning on weekends. The most demanded item on its menu is the manaeesh (a flatbread topped with cheese, herbs or ground meat). Not too different to a pizza, this Levantine snack costs less than Dhs 15 and is something your stomach will appreciate after a binge drinking session. near Safa Park on Al Wasl road and opposite the post office in Karama. Caution: service staff are not the friendliest. Call 04-3968999. Al Mallah Residents are fans of this establishment and chances are you will become one too after you try their food. Nailing Lebanese fare, the restaurant is best-known for its juicy and tender shawarmas (chicken or meat grilled on a spit for as long as a day and then shaved off and served as a wrap with toppings including tahini and pickled turnips). A side of one of their fresh or mixed juices (Tahiti Extra or Chubby Melon being the favoured ones) is mandatory. Mains start from Dhs 28. 2nd of December street (previously known as Dhiyafa street). Call 04-3984962.

Bu Qtair Synonymous with the phrase ‘fresh fish’, Bu Qtair is worth every bit of the hype. Once operating out of a porta cabin, the restaurant now has a location that boasts sea views. However, it has the same menu, that lists no more than five items, and the (dreaded) long queues to place your order and pay your bill. Once you're past that, you get the crispy, spicy fried fish the eatery is famous for. The head chef has been around for more than twenty years… that explains why the Malabari curry has retained its taste over time. opposite fishermen’s accommodation in Umm Suqeim, near Burj Al Arab. Call 055-7052130. www.discover-dubai.ae

Al Fareej This menu boasts more than 20 kinds of fresh juices and will leave you spoilt for choice with its endless food options. But the star really is the kebab, with most diners rating it five out of five. Seating options are limited - if you’re lucky you'll get a chair in a shaded spot in front of the restaurant or you take a mat and sit in the park outside. Order the lamb lemon tikka for its one of the best things you can put in your mouth. Pesco pollo vegetarians can opt for the joojeh kebab (boneless chicken tikka) and they won’t leave Al Fareej disappointed. Mains start from Dhs 27. Union Co-operative Society in Al Qusais. Getting around Dubai

Public transport in Dubai is made up of taxis, buses, trams, the metro and marine transport (abras, water buses, water taxis and ferries).

Taxis: Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi - with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news and entertainment systems.

Smartphone app. Download the RTA's 'Smart Taxi' app and book a taxi with a shake of your phone. The app will locate your position and send an instant message to the nearest taxi driver.

Tips: Avoid getting into unmarked taxis. They are illegal, and you could become the victim of a scam. Tipping your taxi driver is not mandatory, but as in most places, it seems like the right thing to do. Special services: Pink roof taxis are dedicated to serving ladies and families. Specially equipped vehicles are also available for those with special needs (bookings to be made in advance). Luxury service: Uber taxis allow you to use your smartphone to arrange a pickup in a luxury car. The 7 emirates

Abu Dhabi

The largest of the seven emirates, Abu Dhabi is the capital and is the seat of the government. When translated from Arabic, the name Abu Dhabi means “The Father of the Gazelle”, and it is said that this probably refers to the gazelles that lived in the emirate. It is also the address of Saadiyat Cultural District which will house the Louvre and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

One of the world’s largest mosques and an architectural masterpiece, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is visible from each of the bridges on your drive into Abu Dhabi, making for an impressive welcome to the capital! Open to non-Muslims, the mosque features 82 domes held up with over 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The reflective pools that surround the mosque magnify its beauty, and at night it is transformed by a unique lighting system which reflects the phases of the moon. Visiting hours are from 9am to 10pm from Saturday to Thursday and from 4.30pm to 10pm on Fridays. Guided tours, approximately 45 minutes long, are available. www.szgmc.ae

The park is open from 11am to 8pm, daily. www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com

Al Ain

Commonly referred to as the ‘Garden City’ due to its greenery, Al Ain is the birthplace of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding father of the UAE. Located in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain is popular in the summer because of its low humidity. Al Ain Camel Market

Located east of Jebel Hafeet, this is the last souk of its kind in the UAE and is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close and how well they’re cared for. There are some excellent photo opportunities, but ask permission before taking pictures. Opening hours are from 6am to 7pm. There is an entry fee for organised group tours.

A winding highway, listed among the world’s greatest driving roads, takes visitors to the top, which boasts magnificent views over Al Ain. At the base of the mountain lies the Green Mubazzarah Park. In addition to the hot springs (where you can dip your feet in 40-degree Celsius waters), the location also features flowing streams, a manmade lake and chalets. Close to the peak of the mountain, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Al Ain offers accommodation with a view. Its four restaurants, serving varied cuisines, make for a perfect stop when hunger strikes. www.mercure.com
