welcome to dubai

Welcome to our city

Dubai is one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic towers, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story as is this young country itself. About the UAE

Just 45 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.

Founding father of the UAE

A driving force behind the formation of the federation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE.

www.discover-dubai.ae

Government

The UAE is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the VicePresident and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Religion

The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.

Population

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.7 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relatively crime-free lifestyle.

City basics Local time The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving. Currency The local currency is the Emirati dirham (commonly written as AED or DHS on menus and price tags), and it is pegged to the US dollar. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Tip: always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

Money exchange and banking Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday and operate shorter hours on Saturday. They are closed on Fridays. The exchange rates (at the time of going to press) are: One USD = Dhs 3.67 One GBP = Dhs 4.90 One Euro = Dhs 4.38 Language The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used. Here are some Arabic phrases to help you: Hello - marhaba Welcome - ahlan wa sahlan Goodbye - maa-salaama God willing - in shaa'Allah Yes - naam No - laa Let's go - yalla 6 | DECEMBER DISCOVER DUBAI

Please - min fadlak Thank you - shukran How much? - bikam? Price - si'r Where is...? - ayna...? Right - yamiin Left - yasaar

Photography The UAE has strict laws, and taking pictures or videos is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.

Alcohol Alcohol may be consumed at licensed outlets. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol. #discover_dxb

Emirati dress Emirati men wear a

kandura, a long white

robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.

Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.

Ladies first Most public services have a women's-only queue or section, so you may use them where applicable. www.discover-dubai.ae

The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura.

Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. The black scarf, shayla, which covers the hair is traditionally made from black sheer material. Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. A good rule of thumb is to have your knees and shoulders covered. DISCOVER DUBAI DECEMBER | 7

welcome to dubai

What's the story of 2 December? By: Salamah Ghudayer 2 December is the National Day of the United Arab Emirates. It is the anniversary of the nation we know today being formed, uniting the seven separate sheikhdoms. There is a misconception by some that 2 December is our Independence Day and it is not. It is even wrongly written as such on some websites, but only by people who did not do their due diligence. The seven Emirates; starting from the west; Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah were all in existence for hundreds and hundreds of years at least, prior to the unification. The area was known to the international community as the Trucial States and casually as the pearling coast and even the pirate coast. The nine states included in the official Trucial States were the UAE’s seven Emirates, plus Qatar and Bahrain. It was just a term to easily summarise the list of tiny, neighbouring nation states. 8 | DECEMBER DISCOVER DUBAI

Where some historians got it wrong, was adding the Trucial States into being a part of, or governed by the British Commonwealth. This was just not the case. Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi had British embassies and Sharjah had a Royal Air Force (RAF) airstrip. Yet the sole governing, assembly of troops, security of land and the wellbeing of the people was always the absolute duty of each Emirate’s sheikh. The water off the coast however, was a different story. In 1835, there was a treaty with the British most if not all the Trucial State members signed. It was called the General Peace Treaty with Maritime Truce. The truce was made to keep the British from being attacked by these states; and that the British would not attack in return. The water off the coast would be safeguarded by the British Navy, as their government needed to keep the trade routes of the east safe for them. So, this treaty was regarding; who would protect the waters, why they were there #discover_dxb

welcome to dubai and that they came in peace. In the first week of March 1892, Dubai and others signed an additional treaty with the British called the Treaty of Exclusivity. The Emirates which signed agreed not to sell any property to any other empire or nation; which would then cause the maritime treaty to be unstable. Britain wanted to be ‘the’ superpower in the Gulf and neighbouring seas; not the French or Portuguese. Then on 1 December 1971, the British gave up the security duty of the water off the coast of each Emirate and a completion of the above treaties which was received by Sheikh Zayed Al Nahayan the Ruler of Abu Dhabi. 2 December was then the time to announce what had been in negotiations for many years, thanks to the persistence and deep friendship between Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan - the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum - the Ruler of Dubai. Various government structures and names had been debated and discussed amongst all the Trucial State members. Qatar and Bahrain decided to go it alone. Ras Al-Khaimah needed some extra time; one great possibility was that it had many agreements on its own with other nation states and was well known on its own throughout the preceding era. Yet after much determination and great care www.discover-dubai.ae

to various independent states, the culture and the tribes, an agreement had been reached - the formation of the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates would speak with one voice internationally, and protect their water, coast land and people. Each Emirate autonomous yet under a federal system with some federal laws and the protection of a federal government economically and in foreign affairs. Each Emirate’s Sheikh would be kept as an independent leader over his Emirate. A national council and soon after national cabinet would be formed. Yet one of the biggest differences to the people, would be no more tribal wars or land grabs. The people and governments had building and growing to do instead. There were successes to be had and examples to be set. We would be one nation; together, where everyone, would be safe and welcome. With thanks to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Dubai's souks

Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three popular souks in Deira, historically the commercial centre of Dubai, worth ticking off the list when you are in Dubai. Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. Spice Souk Once on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of a selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and hard-hitting perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes (oudbased ones), shops in this market also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops. 12 | DECEMBER DISCOVER DUBAI

things to do

Life's a beach

You don't have to be staying at a beach resort to check out Dubai’s stunning beaches. Here is a list of public ones where entry is free. So, pack your beach bag, grab your favourite book and off you go to get some 'vitamin sea'. Kite Beach

On a breezy day, this is where kite enthusiasts meet to fly their kites, making for a truly beautiful sight especially when seen at sunset. Foodies are spoilt for choice with some unique eateries located on this beach. Kite Beach also offers views of the iconic Burj Al Arab. Umm Suqeim, just off Jumeirah Beach Road.

Black Palace Beach

It's not described as a hidden gem for no reason. Not the easiest to find, this beautiful beach lies close to the royal fortresses at Al Sufouh. The pathway is tiny, but once you discover this spot, it's a land of pure relaxation with views of Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street.

The Beach

With the latest developments at JBR, this beach has become one of Dubai’s most popular sunbathing and swimming locations. You are only seconds away from cafes, a cinema, an outdoor gym and some of the city’s best shops. Take a change of clothes for the evening as this one really has it all! Opposite Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), Dubai Marina.

Sunset Beach

Popular with surfers and offering direct views of the Burj Al Arab, this spot near the wave-shaped Jumeirah Beach Hotel is one of Dubai’s most photographed beaches. Facilities here include showers and changing rooms, snack bars and a children's play area. It is highly recommended for morning jogs. 22 Al Sagi Street, behind Sunset Mall, Jumeirah Beach Road.

4X4 Beach

Named after the offroad vehicles lined up along the shore, this public beach is one of the more basic options. There are no real facilities onsite, but if you are staying nearby, it’s worth a visit for a refreshing swim or to watch the sunset. Make sure you have your camera though. Near Jumeirah Beach Park on Jumeirah Road.

Jebel Ali Beach

On the way to Abu Dhabi, turn right off Sheikh Zayed Road and follow signs to JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort. At the roundabout, follow the road and turn left down a sand track to the beach. food & drink

Dubai's culinary gems You don’t have to empty your pockets to enjoy a good meal, especially not in Dubai. While the city has many top-notch restaurants, it is also the turf to homegrown eateries. These places might be little in size, but they dish out food big on flavour.

Al Ustad Special Kebab Around since 1978, this Iranian restaurant is no secret to ardent foodies. It specialises in South Iranian cuisine, mainly kebabs as well as chicken and meat dishes. At any given point, one of the three brothers will always be around to greet diners, take orders and involve themselves in friendly banter. It is normal to be distracted by photos that are plastered on the walls and memorabilia such as clocks and mobile phones hung on the walls. Currencies from around the world are lined under the glass top dinner tables. You haven't enjoyed your kebabs if they haven't been eaten with a side of rice, drizzled with melted butter and topped with barberries. Mains range between Dhs 25 and Dhs 32. Call 04-3971933. Mankhool road, Bur Dubai (near Al Fahidi Metro station). Ravi Restaurant Most people say you haven’t eaten in Dubai if you haven’t eaten at Ravi’s…and we agree! This no-frills institution serves the best Pakistani food in the city. For what the restaurant lacks in interior (expect plastic chairs and covers), it makes up in its meatheavy menu. The curries are flavourful, the biryani rice is fragrant and the dal is as silky as it gets. For a service team that barely speaks English, you'd be happy to know they rarely get the orders wrong. Most dishes are priced under Dhs 25. Call 04-3315353. Satwa (near the roundabout and opposite Emirates Co-operative Society). Sind Punjab Indian restaurants are a dime a dozen in 36 | DECEMBER DISCOVER DUBAI

Dubai, but it is safe to say that none nail Indian street food the way Sind Punjab does. Ditch sitting indoors for a space by the glass counter where you stand and wait for the server to make you pani puri (a crisp hollow round street snack that’s filled with onion, potatoes, chickpeas and flavoured water). The challenge is getting the entire piece in your mouth at one go. Other street food items on the menu include samosas, chaat (savoury snacks) and pakodas (fritters). Prices start as low as Dhs 2. Call 04-3525058. Meena Bazaar, Bur Dubai. Local House Restaurant It would be a shame if you left Dubai without sinking your teeth into camel meat. Often categorised as ‘comfort food’, Emiratis serve camel meat when a child is born or when there’s a death in the family. This tender and juicy meat is used as patties in burgers #discover_dxb

food & drink at Local House Restaurant. You can have additional fillings ranging from fried egg and salsa to mushrooms and caramelised onions. Up for something heartier? Try the camel meat biryani or kebab. Tip: if you haven’t warmed up to the idea of the meat, the camel milk shake is a good start (psst... it's high in mineral content and unsaturated fatty acids). The restaurant is a popular pit

stop for tourists wandering the heritage site it's located at. Camel meat based dishes start from Dhs 45. Call 04-3540705. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Bu Qtair Synonymous with the phrase ‘fresh fish’, Bu Qtair is worth every bit of the hype. Once operating out of a porta cabin, the restaurant now has a location that boasts sea views. However, it has the same menu, that lists no more than five items, and the (dreaded) long queues to place your order and pay your bill. Once you're past that, you get the crispy, spicy fried fish the eatery is famous for. The head chef has been around for more than twenty years…that explains why the Malabari curry has retained its taste over time. Call 055-7052130. Umm Suqeim (opposite fishermen’s accommodation, near Burj Al Arab). www.discover-dubai.ae

Al Reef The go-to place after a night out, Al Reef is busiest in the early hours of the morning on weekends. The most demanded item on its menu is the manaeesh (a flatbread topped with cheese, herbs or ground meat). Not too different to a pizza, this Levantine snack costs less than Dhs 15 and is something your stomach will appreciate after a binge drinking session. Caution: service staff are not the friendliest. Call 04-3968999. Al Wasl road (near Safa Park) and Al Karama (opposite the post office). Al Mallah Residents are fans of this establishment and chances are you will become one too after you try their food. Nailing Lebanese fare, the restaurant is best-known for its juicy and tender shawarmas (chicken or meat grilled on a spit for as long as a day and then shaved off and served as a wrap with toppings including tahini and pickled turnips). A side of one of their fresh or mixed juices (Tahiti Extra or Chubby Melon being the favoured ones) is mandatory. Mains start from Dhs 28. Call 04-3984723. 2nd of December street (previously known as Al Dhiyafa street). Al Fareej This menu boasts more than 20 kinds of fresh juices and will leave you spoilt for choice with its endless food options. But the star really is the kebab, with most diners rating it five out of five. Seating options are limited - if you’re lucky you'll get a chair in a shaded spot in front of the restaurant, else you take a mat and sit in the park outside. Order the lamb lemon tikka for its one of the best things you can put in your mouth. Pesco pollo vegetarians can opt for the joojeh kebab (boneless chicken tikka) and they won’t leave Al Fareej disappointed. Mains start from Dhs 27. Call 04-2615156. Union Co-operative Society in Al Qusais. DISCOVER DUBAI DECEMBER | 37

beauty & wellbeing

Kick start the holiday season with a toned body! The festive holiday season is quickly approaching. People shop more, go out more, and…eat more. Gaining weight is usually an unwanted companion during the holidays as a lot of people tend to forget about their health and fitness routine during this season, blaming it on the lack of time. We’ve got some ways to change that, and it doesn’t include calorie counting or denying yourself treats. Work, play, and balance… three words that will change your festive season. WORK We ultimately want you to reach your goal and do so in the healthiest and happiest way possible. All you need to do is train 3 times a week for 20 mins minimum: - You can do some work outs around your house, if you have stairs, spend 15 minutes climbing up and down, or grab a skipping rope and aim for 20 minutes of skipping a day, this type of exercise causes minimal disruption to your daily routine and before you know it you’ll have completed a workout in no time. - Make some time for yourself during the day to visit one of our 34 clubs in the UAE, you’re bound to find one not too far from your place of work or home. - If you’re looking for something fun & energetic, try a Zumba class at Fitness First, we have Zumba sessions across many of our clubs at varying times. We even have Aqua Zumba.

www.discover-dubai.ae

PLAY You can absolutely splurge on food during this season as long as you are complimenting this with regular exercise such as brisk walks, a half an hour swim or 6D class at Fitness First. - Have small healthy snack’s available at home for when hunger strikes, for example a handful of nuts or some dried apricots. These will keep the hunger pangs at bay until mealtimes. - Enjoy the ginger cookies, chocolate pudding’s, and sweets associated with the holiday seasons, don’t deny yourself these, but ensure you don’t over do it.

BALANCE Everything in moderation, that is the motto here. Enjoying the holiday season, indulging in sweet treats and spending time with your family is all possible without piling on the pounds; simply remember to: 1. Try and get in at least three 30-minute sessions of exercise per week 2. Be mindful of how much you are eating and for how long 3. Put into place a plan post festive season to get back on track

Other markets

Ditch the malls for an alternate shopping experience in Dubai. Dubai has many markets, and you can be assured what you take home from these places are generally much cheaper than what you'd find in most shopping malls. Meena Bazaar Located in the heart of Bur Dubai, be warned: Meena Bazaar isn't the easiest of locations to get to, but it is your go-to place for a traditional shopping experience. You know you've arrived when you hear blaring horns, see shops with decorative lights and haggling customers. Most shops specialise in textiles but one can find imitation jewellery, Indian outfits and watch repair shops too. Note: first-timers are likely to get swindled. Naif Souk Once a camel market, this is one of Dubai's oldest souks. Today, tourists can buy anything ranging from leather goods to souvenirs, but it is best known as the place for getting abayas (black cloaks worn by Arab women) at reasonable prices. The next most popular item in this market is electronics. Tip: Make sure you bargain with shopkeepers. The best time to visit Naif souk is after sunset when the area comes alive. Satwa It isn't half as stylish as most districts in Dubai, but Satwa is a fascinating area. Here you will find interesting souvenirs ranging from toy camels to models of Burj Khalifa. The best part: You don't have to pay a fortune for them. If you're looking to add some clothes to your wardrobe without emptying your pockets, make your way to Ukay Ukay where you'll find second-hand t-shirts, dresses and baby clothes for under Dhs 20. 46 | DECEMBER DISCOVER DUBAI

What to buy

Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, here are some of the authentic gifts you really should be after. Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques, known as Al Sadu, this fabric is distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black, white, gold and brown. It’s made with wool from camels and goats, and the weave is said to be tight enough that even water won’t go through it. Other than cushions, the fabric is used to make sofas and traditional tents. Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Gourmet food brand Bateel sells a variety of dates including the sweet, raisin-like Khidri, Medjool, Sekki as well as Khola dates. If you'd like to try something different, opt for the ones that are filled with caramelised nuts, candied ginger and orange peel. Note: packaged dates can be eaten year-round. www.discover-dubai.ae

Bukhoor This refers to wood chips, commonly known as oud, soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner, mabkhara. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality. Most women wave their clothing or hair above the smoke so that it picks up the scent. The long-lasting fragrance is also used around homes to eliminate stubborn odours from cooking or tobacco. DISCOVER DUBAI DECEMBER | 47

Getting around Dubai

Public transport in Dubai is made up of taxis, buses, trams, the metro and marine transport (abras, water buses, water taxis and ferries). Here's everything you need to know about these modes of transportation that will help you move from place to place. Taxis: Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi - with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news and entertainment systems.

Booking a taxi Dubai Taxi Corporation (red roof), ladies and families (pink roof), special needs or Hala Taxi (black roof) 04-2080808. Other taxi companies: Al Arabia Taxi (green roof) 04-2855111; Cars Taxi (blue roof) 04-2693344; Metro Taxi (orange roof) 04-2673222; National Taxi (yellow roof) 04-3390002.

Tips: Avoid getting into unmarked taxis. They are illegal, and you could become the victim of a scam. Tipping your taxi driver is not mandatory, but as in most places, it seems like the right thing to do. Special services: Pink roof taxis are dedicated to serving ladies and families. Specially equipped vehicles are also available for those with special needs (bookings to be made in advance).

Abu Dhabi

The largest of the seven emirates, Abu Dhabi is the capital. When translated from Arabic, the name Abu Dhabi means “The Father of the Gazelle”, and it is said that this probably refers to the gazelles that lived in the emirate. 1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque One of the world’s largest mosques and an architectural masterpiece, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is visible from each of the bridges on your drive into Abu Dhabi, making for an impressive welcome to the capital! Open to non-Muslims, the mosque features 82 domes held up with over 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The reflective pools that surround the mosque magnify its beauty, and at night it is transformed by a unique lighting system which reflects the phases of the moon. Visiting hours are from 9am to 10pm from Saturday to Thursday and from 4.30pm to 10pm on Fridays. Guided tours, approximately 45 minutes long, are available. Call 02-4191919. 2. Al Ain

Commonly referred to as the ‘Garden City’ due to its greenery, Al Ain is popular in the summer because of its low humidity. Located in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain is the birthplace of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. 1. Al Ain Oasis Opened as the UAE’s first curated UNESCO World Heritage site visitor experience, the oasis is spread over 1,200 hectares and contains more than 147,000 date palms of up to 100 different varieties. Visitors get an understanding of Al Ain’s oasis ecosystem, shaped by a complex shared water supply based on both wells and the UAE’s traditional irrigation system, ‘aflaj’. The site also features food and beverage outlets. Open from 8am to 5pm. Call 02-5995438. 2. Al Ain Camel Market Located east of Jebel Hafeet, this is the last souk of its kind in the UAE and is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close and how well they’re cared for. There are some excellent photo opportunities, but ask permission before taking pictures. Opening hours are from 6am to 7pm. There is an entry fee for organised group tours. 3. Jebel Hafeet At 1,240m, Jebel Hafeet is the UAE’s second highest peak. Over 500 ancient burial tombs dating back 5,000 years have been found in the foothills. A winding highway, listed among the world’s greatest driving roads, takes visitors to the top, which boasts magnificent views over Al Ain. At the base of the mountain lies the Green Mubazzarah Park. In addition to the hot springs (where you can dip your feet in 40-degree Celsius waters), the location also features flowing streams, a man-made lake and chalets. The 18th-century fort, one of the main historical attractions in the UAE, served as the ruler’s residence until 1970. Umm al-Quwain

Least populated of all the emirates, Umm al-Quwain (simply referred to as UAQ) is in the north of the UAE. When translated from Arabic, the name Umm al-Quwain means ‘Mother of Two Powers’. 1. It is home to the UAE's largest Socotra cormorant colony, with over 15,000 pairs making it the third largest colony in the world. During the period between November to March, they are regularly spotted flying a few feet above the sea. Marine life is here remarkable; blacktip reef sharks patrol the outer shoreline, while green turtles are abundant in the inner leads. Between Al-Sinniyah and the mainland is an expansive area of sand and mud flats called Khor al-Beida. 2. Dreamland Aqua Park Celebrating its 20th birthday this year, Dreamland offers visitors low to high thrill attractions.
