GENERAL information
Welcome to
Dubai In 1833, H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Butti moved the Bani Yas tribal family into Dubai. Sheikh Maktoum subsequently became the founder of the Al Maktoum family who continue to rule the Emirate to this day.
PRESENT DAY DUBAI The current ruler of Dubai is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed is committed to fulfilling his father’s dream of making Dubai one of the leading cities in the world, and has successfully turned Dubai into a global hub of tourism and trade between the East and West.
RELIGION
The official religion of the UAE is Islam and you will find a large number of mosques throughout the city. Non-muslims are only permitted entry into mosques if they are on a guided tour.
POPULATION
The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.4 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates, who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relaxed, relatively crime-free lifestyle. 10 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai
LOCAL TIME
The UAE is 4 hours ahead of GMT during winter months and 3 hours ahead in the summer, during daylight saving.
LANGUAGE
The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used.
WEEKEND
The UAE weekend falls on Friday and Saturday.
DUBAI CLIMATE
Dubai has a tropical desert climate, with summer temperatures reaching the mid to high 40’s and remaining in the 30’s overnight. Winter months are milder and more comfortable, with average temperatures in the mid 20’s, dropping to 12ºC-14ºC at night. Between December and March the winter weather can also bring short, irregular rainfall - so be prepared!
Credit: Dubai Meteorological Office
CURRENCY
The local currency is the Emirati Dirham which is pegged to the US Dollar. The Dirham is commonly referred to as either AED or DHS when shown in written form on price tags and menus etc. There are 100 fils to one Dirham and coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000. Always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.
MONEY EXCHANGE & BANKING
Exchanging cash or travellers cheques is relatively easy, with Exchange Centres located in most of the shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are also open Saturday to Thursday (closed on Friday).
The following Dirham exchange rates are correct at the time of going to press: • One US$ = Dhs 3.67 • One UK£ = Dhs 5.25 • One Euro = Dhs 3.97 www.discover-dubai.ae

GENERAL information
LOCAL
Despite becoming one of the most modern cities in the world, the local population of Dubai remain conscious of their heritage, legacy and culture. The late President of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, famously said, ‘A country that knows not its past has neither present nor future’, a phrase which adequately describes the Emirates of today.
culture
Many people come to Dubai holding misconceptions about the local culture, so in order to put everyone's mind at ease, Discover Dubai asked Mr Nasif Kayed, General Manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), to answer some of those frequently asked questions.
Q. What is the “dress code” in Dubai?
A. Most expect business casual as the official dress code, as well as the underlying values of modesty. Generally, modesty in this country means no need to show-off. While we do see a bit of that, beachwear is for the beach, evening wear for the nightclubs and family friendly for the malls and public places. Just like company dress code rules, it’s best that a family-friendly attire is worn when out, if your shoulders and knees are covered, you’re sure not to offend anyone.
Q. Can you please explain the local dress?
A. In the past, almost everyone wore some type of robe because of its simplicity and modesty, from religious figures to everyday people. Light, airy clothes also keep you cool in the desert, which is why they are still popular in this region. In the UAE, the national dress for men is the spotlessly clean and crisp white ‘dishdasha’ or ‘kandoura’ and is worn with a headdress known as a ‘ghuttra’ (normally white for Emirati nationals). The ghuttra is secured around the head with a black cord or ‘agal’ which is still used to tether the camel’s feet together to stop them wandering off in the desert. Local Emirati women wear a traditional black weightless cloak called an ‘abaya’, together with a headscarf called a ‘sheyla’ sometimes decorated with traditional embroidery or sequins. The black abaya has evolved over the years and has crossed the cultural line to become a more universal garment worn all over the world and is an iconic part of fashion in the region. Some women will also wear a leather mask called a ‘burgaa’ or use a very light veil ‘niqab’ to cover their face. Tradition, culture and religious modesty all influence the local dress for both men and women, and simplicity is the rule. 12 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai
Q. Can I wear the local dress?
A. There is nothing that states you cannot dress like a local, but it’s best to remember that once in that attire, you may be mistaken for one! So best to learn the protocols, mind your manners and understand you may be representing (or misrepresenting) someone’s culture.
Q. Is it okay to take pictures of a local/Emirati?
A. It depends on the person, ask first and if they refuse don't be offended, some might be in a hurry to get somewhere or may simply be shy and do not want their picture taken.
Q. Is it okay to hold hands, and even hug and kiss your wife/husband in public?
A. It's definitely okay to hold hands, but in public please conduct yourselves in a respectful manner. It’s expected to see an embrace at the airport, but these types of gestures are not typical in local society, therefore visitors and residents are asked to keep intimate exchanges ‘family friendly’. arium
Q. Is it okay to show the bottom of your feet?
AL
RASHIDIYA A. In the past, walking in the village was not as tidy as it is today, so when you entered a home, one removed their shoes. Even if you wore sandals your feet may have become soiled and unsightly. Today, mostly the elderly would expect you not to show the bottom of your feet as a sign of respect. UMM Rashidiya

A. This comes from religion regarding do’s and don’ts. So no to alcohol, but here in Dubai it is legal in places like hotels and private residences (if you have a permit), but absolutely no tolerance for it in public or behind the wheel. As to pork, it’s a dietary restriction mentioned in the Quran along with other restrictions pertaining to certain foods. In Dubai, pork can be found in a small number of markets, and is usually kept separate Deira City Centre from the main area. AL KHABISI

GENERAL information
Shisha (hubbly-bubbly) As you travel around Dubai you will often see people smoking shisha, and if the sweet, fruity smell has got you intrigued, here’s a quick overview to tell you what it's all about.
What is it?
Shisha is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco through cooled water. The tobacco is heated by charcoal at the top and inhaled through a water chamber at the bottom. Shisha pipes date back over 500 years and their origins are still heavily debated.
What’s in it?
Shisha mu’assel is a syrupy mix of tobacco, binding agent (molasses, honey, treacle, sugar or vegetable glycerol) and fruit flavouring. Typical flavours include apple, mint, mango, strawberry, grape, melon and a variety of fruit based mixes. Contrary to popular belief, shisha is smoked for the flavour and enjoyment, and not for any kind of effect.
What’s it all about?
Smoking shisha is about socialising and has been part of life in the Middle East for centuries. Shisha cafés are full of friendly conversations, with both men and women equally taking part, and in places where alcohol is not allowed, you will find shisha being used to lubricate a social gathering. Shisha is also becoming increasingly popular in the West and you will find shisha pipes in homes and restaurants around the world. 14 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai
What you need to know!
Smoking shisha is a leisurely, sociable activity that lasts about an hour (unlike a cigarette that usually takes a couple of minutes). According to the World Health Organisation, the volume of smoke inhaled in an hour-long session is the equivalent of smoking around 100 cigarettes. Findings show a smoker will inhale half a litre of smoke per cigarette, while a shisha smoker can take between a sixth and a litre of smoke per inhale. Some of the nicotine is absorbed in the water, but this leads to people smoking more to experience the same effect, therefore inhaling more carbon monoxide, heavy metals, tar and carcinogens. Remember that shisha contains tobacco and is therefore linked to the same life-threatening illnesses as cigarettes.
USEFUL TIPS Although we don’t condone smoking, this is part of the Arabic culture, and shisha may be one of the things you try during your stay. To help you fit in, here are some useful tips: • Only use specially prepared shisha tobacco • Occasionally blow into the pipe to get rid of the smoke building up in the water chamber • Replace the water if smoking for longer than an hour • Don't inhale too deeply • Shisha is no substitute for cigarettes, don’t switch to shisha if you’re trying to give up • Share your shisha, it will give you a break • If you do try it, limit it to occasional use; it's meant to be sociable!

DRINKING
W
ith the obvious lack of rainfall and ever increasing population, Dubai is becoming more and more dependent on water desalination plants. Although desalinated water is perfectly safe to drink, contaminants from the pipes leading to homes and offices may affect the taste, so residents prefer to drink bottled water or use a water dispenser. That said, tests for bacteria in tap water are consistently less than 100 colonyforming units per milliliter (acceptable limit is 500), whilst most water dispensers have an average count of 200-300 CFUs/ml (if they are regularly serviced).
www.discover-dubai.ae
With over 2 million people in Dubai, it’s everyone’s responsibility to preserve water, so please turn off the taps and try not to use running water for shaving or brushing your teeth! Bottled water is very popular and walking around the shops you will find everything from cheap local water (which is tap water with the contaminants filtered out), to the high-end mineral waters that promise eternal youth. For those looking for the lowest sodium content, most local water has between 3-16mg/litre, but due to the amount of sodium you lose when you sweat, it’s a good idea to put some back in. In summary, there is absolutely no problem using tap water in Dubai for cooking and drinking, but bottled water seems to be the convenient lifestyle choice.

ARABIC FAMILY NAMES On your travels, you are likely to come across traditional Arabic names, so we’ve put together this short explanation to help you understand what they mean. First names traditionally come from Islam, and are chosen for their strong meanings. In the Quran it says, ‘On the day of resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names’. This is why most Muslim names are made up of three parts - the given name, father's name (‘bin’ means son of, ‘bint’ means daughter of ), and their family name. For example, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum is: Mohammed
bin Rashid
(given name meaning ‘Praised One’)
Al Maktoum
(son of Rashid)
(tribe/family name)
Emiratis can also include their fathers, grandfathers, and in some cases great-grandfathers names, so Sheikh Mohammed’s name could also be written like this. Mohammed (First name)
Rashid
(Father)
Saeed
(Grandfather)
Maktoum
(Great Grandfather)
Al Maktoum
(Tribe/Family)
You will also hear men being called by their eldest son's name, so a man with a son called Ahmed could also be known as Abu Ahmed (Abu means ‘father’ of ).

GENERAL information
CAR RENTAL
The road network throughout the UAE is expanding daily, and hiring a car is a great way to get out and see the Emirates. Most rental companies will deliver to, and collect from, your hotel or apartment, and depending on your budget you could be driving anything from economy models to top of the range sports cars. All the vehicles are left-hand drive and most (if not all) are automatic, and watch out for the speed cameras, or you could be hit with a big fine when you return the car! Petrol is cheap compared to Europe, with prices ranging from Dhs 2.07 per litre. Unleaded petrol is called ‘Special’ and you can expect to pay about Dhs 90 to fill an economy car and up to Dhs 180 for a large car or 4x4. Call Diamondlease on 800 DRIVE (37483). In theory anyone over the age of 18 with a valid driver’s license can drive, but in practice most reputable car-hire companies will not rent to those under 23, with some companies even going up to 25 years. Driving License Requirements: 1. Drivers are required to produce their original passports as a form of identification 2. All national (home country) licenses must be held for a minimum of one year 3. All visitors to Dubai are required have a valid international driver’s license issued in their country of origin. *Note - most car-hire companies will ask for a security deposit against damages to the vehicle and unpaid toll and traffic fines.
LIMOUSINES
For the ultimate night out with friends, or to make a real impression, why not hire a chauffeur driven limousine and arrive in style. A limousine ride in Dubai is a great way to see the city and most companies will customise the tour to suit your needs. You can find all types of luxury transportation available and the prices are surprisingly affordable (especially when split between a group of people) and include the driver, insurance, unlimited mileage and soft drinks. When Discover Dubai readers book 3 hours with Dubai Exotic Limo (see advert opposite) they will receive 1 hour's use of the limousine free! See the discount voucher at the back of this magazine. 18 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai

DUBAI CREEK AND DEIRA The best way to see the impressive buildings that have sprung up along Dubai Creek is from the waterway, and bustling Abra stations will provide you with a quick and efficient way to cross the water.
WATER TAXIS AND ABRAS
Dubai Creek is full of water taxis and Abras ferrying people around, and can be boarded at numerous locations along the banks. Abras are small barges that are powered by diesel engines and can seat around 20 people. Incidentally, the work force commute across the Creek on a regular basis and there are over 17,500 Abra crossings per day, so if you’re wearing expensive or light coloured clothing it's advisable to remain standing for the trip, as the bench seats can get a little grubby. Abras can also be hired for private trips along the Creek and if you negotiate well with the boat captains, you should get a good deal.
L
SPICE SOUK
Once you land on the Deira side of the Creek, all you have to do is follow your nose and take in the breathtaking selection of spices, such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a working souq which sells goods to locals and sailors from the dhows, and is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes.
N
GOLD SOUK
M
One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect smell. Besides traditional perfumes, they also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it's well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops.
Even if you’re not looking for anything in particular, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). There are over 1000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and with no taxes, low import duties and high turnovers allowing for lower margins, it's one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into anything by the first shop, everyone's prepared to barter and there’s plenty of choice! 26 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai

Over 6,600 lights and 50 colour projectors create a breathtaking show syncronised with classical, Arabic and world music. Shows run at 1pm and 1.30pm and then every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm Sunday to Wednesday, and 11.30pm Thursday to Saturday. The Dubai Fountain is located next to The Dubai Mall and entrance is free. And now you have the opportunity to navigate the 30-acre Burj Lake (home to The Dubai Fountain) on an Abra. Each Abra can accommodate 6 people and will navigate a defined path that doesn’t interfere with the fountain’s grid. Boats operate every 30 minutes between 5.45pm and 11.15pm, Saturday to Thursday (rides are held between performances to ensure your safety). Price is Dhs 65 and the ticket counter and Abra bay are located at the waterfront promenade of The Dubai Mall. www.discover-dubai.ae

FALCONRY ROYAL SHAHEEN
Man has always regarded the falcon as a symbol of force and courage, and these fast-flying predators have been used as trusted hunting companions for over 4000 years. The falcon is also the national bird of the UAE, a status which recognizes the importance of falconry in Emirati tradition and culture. The two main species found in the UAE are the Saqr (Saker) and Peregrine. Both were traditionally trapped during the autumn migration; used for hunting during the season and then released back into the wild. Due to this cycle of trap and release, Emiratis had to develop effective training methods so they could put the birds to work as soon as possible. As a result, Emiratis are now regarded as some of the best falconers in the world. Although hunting with falcons was an important part of life in the UAE, it is now illegal, and today falconry is mainly enjoyed as a traditional sport. If you would like to experience this amazing sport first hand, Royal Shaheen offers exclusive packages that allow you to personally handle and fly some of these

Located in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, with Oryx and Gazelles roaming freely, the small group sizes (max 8 people) ensure a feeling of exclusivity, and give everyone a chance to stroke the velvety soft feathers of an owl, have a hawk gently alight on your gloved fist and marvel at the breathtaking speed and agility of a falcon as it swoops down at well over 100 km/h. There are some great restaurants in Dubai, from world famous names to hidden gems on the high street, and with an abundance to choose from, you will not be disappointed.
LICENSED RESTAURANTS
Be aware that alcohol in general and wine in particular can be quite expensive in Dubai, and can significantly increase your bill. If you like a glass of wine with your meal, then you may need to book a restaurant in one of the many hotels, which may sound strange at first, but you will soon get used to accessing restaurants via a hotel lobby, and in some circumstances, a lift! Some restaurants can get very busy, so we highly recommend that you pre-book a table. Likewise, it is advisable to be dressed in smart casual clothes - tailored shorts don't always cut it in Dubai! Friday brunches are very popular, and whilst they may appear expensive, when you consider that most include free-flowing alcoholic drinks, they represent great value.

NIGHTLIFE & entertainment
Nightlife &
entertainment When the sun goes down, Dubai comes alive with an energetic and cosmopolitan atmosphere buzzing through its multitude of nightspots.
W
ith a youthful population, large number of tourists, free drinks for the ladies and some of the best DJs in the world performing on a regular basis, you can usually find a great night out. Most clubs are open until 3am, and given the hot climate during the day and people eating late, things don’t usually get busy until around 11pm. The dress code for most places is smart casual, and you also need to be aware of the ‘No Dancing’ rule - it’s illegal to dance in a bar or club if they don’t have a dance license, but don’t worry, the security staff will let you know... The legal drinking age in Dubai is 21, so if in doubt, take some form of photo ID.
We recommend... Mahiki @ Jumeirah Beach Hotel
With its Tiki décor, delicious fresh fruit cocktails and tropical flowers adorning every Honolulu Honey’s hair, a night out in Tiki Paradise is unique in every respect! Conceived in 2005, Mahiki has grown to become one of the world’s most famous bars, and established itself as an institution for those looking to have a really good time! From the laid back yet chic surroundings, the smell of coconuts as soon as you set foot inside, and the exotic fresh drinks and tropical island grill food menu, every element of this flamboyant environment has been carefully planned to add to the enticing ambiance. And with no VIP ‘red roped’ area and an open and friendly door policy, Mahiki remains a one-of-a-kind venue for a night out in Dubai. Open Monday to Friday 7pm to 3am and Saturday 10pm to 3am. Call 04-3807731 or visit www.mahiki.ae. 62 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai

Public transport in Dubai is made up of Taxis, Buses, Trams, the Metro and Marine Transport (Abra, Water Bus, Water Taxi and Ferry Dubai).
DUBAI TAXI
Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest and most popular ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. Luxury Service: If you want to travel in luxury, Uber is for you. Uber taxis allow you to use your smartphone to arrange a pickup in a luxury car. By downloading the Uber App and registering your credit card details, you can have a spotlessly clean car pick you up in minutes from anywhere in Dubai.
Smartphone App Download the RTA's new App 'Smart Taxi' and book a taxi with a shake of your phone. The App will locate your position and send an instant message to the nearest taxi driver. It also allows you to track the taxi’s movement and look for the shortest route.
Tips Avoid getting into unmarked taxis, not only are they illegal, you could become the victim of a scam. Try to identify a landmark near your destination and keep Discover Dubai handy so you can check the map. Tipping the driver isn’t mandatory, but as in most places it seems the right thing to do. 70 | FEBRUARY Discover Dubai

DUBAI METRO
The Dubai Metro is a driverless public transport system linking the main areas of Dubai, and each station is supported by a bus and taxi terminal to help you get to your destination.
DUBAI TRAM
The Dubai Tram system links the Dubai Metro and the Palm Monorail and circles the Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence before running along Al Sufouh Road.
BUYING YOUR TICKET
To travel on these systems you need a Nol card or a Nol ticket. To buy or top-up a Nol card or ticket, just go to the ticket office or ticket machine within each station.
WHAT IS A NOL CARD?
A Nol (fare) card is an electronic payment card and there are 3 types available Silver, Blue and Gold. We recommend the Silver card for frequent travellers, which can be loaded with up to Dhs 1000 credit. The Blue card is a personalised card with added security and online services, and the Gold card gives you privileged access to the Gold Class cabins. Nol cards can be used on all modes of public transport and even pay for parking and Dubai Taxis. Each time you travel, just tap the card on the validator and it will automatically deduct the correct fare. It's easy!
WHAT IS A NOL TICKET?
The Red Nol ticket is a paper-based system for occasional travellers. Tickets can be bought from any station vending machine and loaded with up to 10 single trips. Make sure you load it with the correct trip beforehand by checking which zones you’ll pass through, or you could get penalised.
