GENERAL information

Welcome to

Dubai

In 1833, H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Butti moved the Bani Yas tribal family into Dubai. Sheikh Maktoum subsequently became the founder of the Al Maktoum family who continue to rule the Emirate to this day.

PRESENT DAY DUBAI The current ruler of Dubai is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed is committed to fulfilling his father’s dream of making Dubai one of the leading cities in the world, and has successfully turned Dubai into a global hub of tourism and trade between the East and West.

RELIGION

The official religion of the UAE is Islam and you will find a large number of mosques throughout the city. Non-muslims are only permitted entry into mosques if they are on a guided tour.

POPULATION

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.4 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates, who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relaxed, relatively crime-free lifestyle.

LOCAL TIME

The UAE is 4 hours ahead of GMT during winter months and 3 hours ahead in the summer, during daylight saving.

LANGUAGE

The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce.

Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used.

WEEKEND

The UAE weekend falls on Friday and Saturday.

DUBAI CLIMATE

Dubai has a tropical desert climate, with summer temperatures reaching the mid to high 40’s and remaining in the 30’s overnight. Winter months are milder and more comfortable, with average temperatures in the mid 20’s, dropping to 12ºC-14ºC at night. Between December and March the winter weather can also bring short, irregular rainfall - so be prepared!

CURRENCY

The local currency is the Emirati Dirham which is pegged to the US Dollar. The Dirham is commonly referred to as either AED or DHS when shown in written form on price tags and menus etc.

There are 100 fils to one Dirham and coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham.

Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

MONEY EXCHANGE & BANKING

Exchanging cash or travellers cheques is relatively easy, with Exchange Centres located in most of the shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are also open Saturday to Thursday (closed on Friday).

LOCAL

Despite becoming one of the most modern cities in the world, the local population of Dubai remain conscious of their heritage, legacy and culture. The late President of the UAE, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, famously said, ‘A country that knows not its past has neither present nor future’, a phrase which adequately describes the Emirates of today.

Many people come to Dubai holding misconceptions about the local culture, so in order to put everyone's mind at ease, Discover Dubai asked Mr Nasif Kayed, General Manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), to answer some of those frequently asked questions.

Q. What is the “dress code” in Dubai?

A. Most expect business casual as the official dress code, as well as the underlying values of modesty. Generally, modesty in this country means no need to show-off. While we do see a bit of that, beachwear is for the beach, evening wear for the nightclubs and family friendly for the malls and public places. Just like company dress code rules, it’s best that a family-friendly attire is worn when out, if your shoulders and knees are covered, you are sure not to offend anyone.

Q. Can you please explain the local dress?

A. In the past, almost everyone wore some type of robe because of its simplicity and modesty, from religious figures to everyday people. Light, airy clothes also keep you cool in the desert, which is why they are still popular in this region. In the UAE, the national dress for men is the spotlessly clean and crisp white ‘dishdasha’ or ‘kandoura’ and is worn with a headdress known as a ‘ghuttra’ (normally white for Emirati nationals). The ghuttra is secured around the head with a black cord or ‘agal’ which is still used to tether the camel’s feet together to stop them wandering off in the desert.

Local Emirati women wear a traditional black weightless cloak called an ‘abaya’, together with a headscarf called a ‘sheyla’ sometimes decorated with traditional embroidery or sequins.

The black abaya has evolved over the years and has crossed the cultural line to become a more universal garment worn all over the world and is an iconic part of fashion in the region. Some women will also wear a leather mask called a ‘burgaa’ or use a very light veil ‘niqab’ to cover their face. Tradition, culture and religious modesty all influence the local dress for both men and women, and simplicity is the rule.

Q. Can I wear the local dress?

A. There is nothing that states you cannot dress like a local, but it’s best to remember that once in that attire, you may be mistaken for one!

So best to learn the protocols, mind your manners and understand you may be representing (or misrepresenting) someone’s culture.

Q. Is it okay to take pictures of a local/Emirati?

A. It depends on the person, ask first and if they refuse do not be offended, some might be in a hurry to get somewhere or may simply be shy and do not want their picture taken.

Q. Is it okay to hold hands, and even hug and kiss your wife/husband in public?

A. It is definitely okay to hold hands, but in public please conduct yourselves in a respectful manner. It is expected to see an embrace at the airport, but these types of gestures are not typical in local society, therefore visitors and residents are asked to keep intimate exchanges ‘family friendly’. arium

Q. Is it okay to show the bottom of your feet?

RASHIDIYA A. In the past, walking in the village was not as tidy as it is today, so when you entered a home, one removed their shoes. Even if you wore sandals your feet may have become soiled and unsightly. Today, mostly the elderly would expect you not to show the bottom of your feet as a sign of respect.

A. This comes from religion regarding do’s and don’ts. So no to alcohol, but here in Dubai it is legal in places like hotels and private residences (if you have a permit), but absolutely no tolerance for it in public or behind the wheel. As to pork, it’s a dietary restriction mentioned in the Quran along with other restrictions pertaining to certain foods. In Dubai, pork can be found in a small number of markets, and is usually kept separate Deira City Centre from the main area.

Our handy guide to the Have you ever wondered if you can tell where a person is from by the style of their thobe or abaya?

You may have noticed the difference in clothing when walking through the mall or in a coffee shop. This easy guide can help to give an idea of how you can tell where someone is from.

The BALANCE is created by holding the ghotra at symmetrical lengths over the shoulders and then throwing the ends over the top of the head to create the shape of a scale when you look at it from the front.

The TEACHER is an easy to achieve over the shoulders look.

Emirati

The Emirati kanduras have no collar, they have a long loose tassel with matching embroidery on the sleeves.

Kuwait

Kuwaiti kanduras are known for their use high quality fabric, they are a slim fit and have a one button collar.

Omanis wear a MUSSAR which is a hat, rather than the ghotra found in the rest of the MENA region, they are often seen in colourful patterns or with monograms.

Omani

Omani kanduras are collarless with short loose tassels attached just above the chest.

The BUTTERFLY is an easy, elegant, flexible look. It allows for freer movement of the head and neck, unlike some of the starched, more complex designs.

Bahrain

Bahraini kanduras have a soft shirt collar and are loose fitting, they occasionally have detail such as shirt pockets.

The COBRA is heavily starched and stiff which gives it an imposing look, it was actually inspired by the venomous snake!

Qatar

The material of the Qatari kandura is often shiny and occasionally has a shirt pocket or a long, stiff tassel.

The BINT AL BAKKAR is tough to master but looks great. In this image it is complimented with a red and white checked ghotra.

Saudi

Saudi kanduras are tight fit with a twobutton collar, the shirt sleeves are made to have cufflinks.

MENA National dress Turkey

The JILBAB is a long-buttoned overcoat, usually a slim fit which provides covering as well as style. The colourful silk scarves, which are tied beneath the chin, are normally worn with the jilbab.

Palestine

This traditional cross-stitched and heavily embroidered dress is worn to mark special occasions in Palestine. The EMBROIDERY, which is on the chest, sleeves, sides and back, is structured in a very specific way and varies depending on the town or area where the dress was made.

Afghanistan

The full body covering is worn almost exclusively In Afghanistan, with blue being the most common colour. The CHADRI, the face veil, covers the entire head except for the eyes, which are covered by a net.

Jordan

The Jordanian kaftan has detailed patterns on the neck, sleeves and hem of the dress only and not down the centre.

The ASBA, headscarf, is wrapped around the head and tied at the back, then folded over the front to create a decorative drape effect.

Morocco

This robe with its pointed hood can be made to be ornate and formal, or it can be kept comfortable and casual.

The JALABIYA, the full-length hooded garment, also has belt at the back which gives the option of adding more shapes.

Khaleeji

Most nationals from the Gulf wear loose-fitting black abayas, sometimes with stunning details and decoration. The SHAYLA is traditionally made from very sheer lightweight material, it affords modesty and even though it is black is very practical in the high temperature of the desert and protects from dust.

FAZZA CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FREEDIVING WHEN: From March 20

In the early days of the emirate’s history, pearl diving was a common way to earn a living.

Without the help of tools or equipment, the divers had only their natural skills and abilities to descend and retrieve treasures from the bottom of the sea. The Fazza Championship for Freediving continues the tradition, as athletes and diving enthusiasts gather to watch athletes take the plunge. The competition consists of two categories - one for professional free divers and one limited to UAE and GCC nationals. AL FAHIDI FORT AND DUBAI MUSEUM

Dating back to 1787, Al Fahidi Fort once guarded the landward approaches to the city and has since been a seat of government, the ruler’s main residence, a military barracks and a prison. In 1971, the ruler opened Dubai museum within the Fort and together they provide a fascinating insight into days of old, with many interesting archaeological finds displayed in cavernous underground rooms, including spears, armour, khanjar knives and cannons, many of which are inscribed with the maker’s name. BAIT AL WAKEEL MARITIME MUSEUM

Situated near the abra (water taxi) station at Dubai Creek, Bait Al Wakeel was built in 1934 by the late Sheikh Rashid as Dubai's first office building. SHEIKH SAEED AL MAKTOUM’S HOUSE

Built in 1896 on the banks of Dubai Creek, this was the home of the ruling family until Sheikh Saeed’s death in 1958. Aside from being an architectural marvel, the building is now a museum, with a unique collection of photographs showing Dubai, the souqs and traditional celebrations since the 1940s. TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE MUSEUM

CAMEL MUSEUM

Located in the ‘Rekab House’ (Camel House), the museum was originally used as a Camel stable for the Sheikhs. When the building was restored, its architectural design was conserved to become a Camel museum. This unique house explains the history and prominence of Camels, and illustrates breeds such as the Saleel, Faseel, Naqah and Hewar used by the Bedouin people as ships of the desert. HORSE MUSEUM

The Horse museum is located in a house that once belonged to the late Sheikha Mozah bint Saeed, who converted the building into a museum to explain the Arabian stallions’ history, its eminence for Arabs and its names and citing in Arabic literature. HERITAGE VILLAGE

The Heritage village recreates a Bedouin settlement, complete with homes made from barasti and mud, and a tented bedouin village with traditional weapons, chests and household utensils. You can enjoy pottery and weaving workshops, try a traditional coffee house, or visit a small souk which sells a mixture of traditional Bedouin handcrafts. The Diving village provides a glimpse of Dubai’s maritime past and shows you what life was like six to seven thousand years ago, when pearl diving was one of the regions main sources of income. DUBAI CREEK AND DEIRA The best way to see the impressive buildings that have sprung up along Dubai Creek is from the waterway, and bustling Abra stations will provide you with a quick and efficient way to cross the water.

WATER TAXIS AND ABRAS

Dubai Creek is full of water taxis and Abras ferrying people around, and can be boarded at numerous locations along the banks. Abras are small barges that are powered by diesel engines and can seat around 20 people.

Incidentally, Dubai's work force commute across the Creek on a regular basis and there are over 17,500 Abra crossings per day, so if you’re wearing expensive or light coloured clothing it's advisable to remain standing for the trip, as the bench seats can get a little grubby. Abras can also be hired for private trips along the Creek and if you negotiate well with the boat captains, you should get a good deal.

SPICE SOUK

Once you land on the Deira side of the Creek, all you have to do is follow your nose and take in the breathtaking selection of spices, such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams.

Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a working souq which sells goods to locals and sailors from the dhows, and is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes.

One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect smell. Besides traditional perfumes, they also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops.

Even if you are not looking for anything in particular, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and with no taxes, low import duties and high turnovers allowing for lower margins, it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into anything by the first shop, everyone's prepared to barter and there’s plenty of choice!

Further into Deira on Omar bin Al Khattab road, you will find Burj Nahar, one of three inland-facing watchtowers that were used to guard Dubai from attack by hostile desert tribes. JUMEIRAH MOSQUE

The Dubai Fountain is a captivating water, music and light spectacle in Downtown Dubai. One of Dubai’s most compelling tourist attractions, it delights thousands of visitors for free every day and is the world’s tallest performing fountain.

Dubai Water Canal

The Dubai Water Canal is a 3.2km long waterway which winds its way from the Creek in Old Dubai through Business Bay to the Arabian Gulf. Burj Khalifa - The world’s tallest tower

Unveiled in February 2010, the Burj Khalifa stands 828 metres high - 320 metres taller than Taipei 101 which had held the record since 2004. The Burj Khalifa currently holds seven records, including the highest occupied floor, highest outdoor observation deck - ‘At the Top - Sky' and the tallest service elevator. Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest and most popular ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) have also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi, with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news updates and entertainment systems.

Special Services Taxis with a pink roof are dedicated for ladies and families. Specially equipped vehicles are also available for those with special needs (booked 24 hours in advance).

Dubai Water Taxis are a private service that will come to the station nearest to you.

They operate between 10am to 10pm and cost Dhs 400 per hour.

Dubai Ferry service is available from Ghubaiba and Marina Mall stations. Tickets cost Dhs 75 Gold (14 seats) and Dhs 50 Silver (84 seats 2 seats for special needs).

DUBAI METRO

The Dubai Metro is a driverless public transport system linking the main areas of Dubai, and each station is supported by a bus and taxi terminal to help you get to your destination.

DUBAI TRAM

The Dubai Tram system links the Dubai Metro and the Palm Monorail and circles the Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence before running along Al Sufouh Road.

BUYING YOUR TICKET

To travel on these systems you need a Nol card or a Nol ticket. To buy or top-up a Nol card or ticket, just go to the ticket office or ticket machine within each station.

WHAT IS A NOL CARD?

A Nol (fare) card is an electronic payment card and there are 3 types available Silver, Blue and Gold. We recommend the Silver card for frequent travellers, which can be loaded with up to Dhs 1,000 credit. The Blue card is a personalised card with added security and online services, and the Gold card gives you privileged access to the Gold Class cabins. Nol cards can be used on all modes of public transport and even pay for parking and Dubai Taxis. Each time you travel, just tap the card on the validator and it will automatically deduct the correct fare. It's easy!

WHAT IS A NOL TICKET?

The Red Nol ticket is a paper-based system for occasional travellers. Tickets can be bought from any station vending machine and loaded with up to 10 single trips.

Make sure you load it with the correct trip beforehand by checking which zones you’ll pass through, or you could get penalised.

The Metro runs from 5.30am to midnight Saturday to Wednesday; 5.30am to 1am on Thursday and from 10am to 1am on Friday.

Qasr Al Hosn Pictured on the back of the Dhs 1,000 note, this iconic fort was originally a watch tower back in 1760 that safeguarded a precious fresh water well. In 1793, after an expansion, it became the ancestral home of the ruling Al Nahyan family. And remained the royal residence until 1966. It now hosts a free exhibit of photographs, archaeological finds, models and other objects chart the history of Abu Dhabi and its people.

Al Ain

Al Ain, also known as the Garden City due to its greenery, is the second largest city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the fourth largest city in the UAE. It is located approximately 160 kilometres east of the capital Abu Dhabi and about 120 kilometres south of Dubai.

TOP ATTRACTIONS: Al Ain Zoo Al Ain Zoo is located in the foothills of the Jebel Hafeet Mountains. It mainly houses Arabian antelopes and oryx, eland, gazelle, lechwe and can be found in the tree shaded paddocks which offer excellent breeding conditions. There's a big cat house, reptile house, monkey compound, and an aquarium and aviary. The zoo also hosts the almost extinct white lion and there is also a giraffe feeding station that the kids will love.

Al Ain Camel Market This is the last souk of its kind in the UAE and is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close and see and hear traders discussing the

price and merits of their animals. Located east of Jebel Hafeet, there are some excellent photo opportunities, but be careful where you point your lens and always ask permission first. Opening hours are from 6am to 7pm and entry is free for the general public.

Al Ain Oasis In the heart of the city, the Al Ain Oasis has been opened as the UAE’s first curated UNESCO World Heritage site visitor experience. Spread over 1,200 hectares (nearly 3,000 acres) and containing more than 147,000 date palms of up to 100 different varieties, this impressive oasis is filled with palm plantations, many of which are still working farms.

Al Ain Palace Museum Located on the western edge of Al Ain Oasis, the Palace of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was built in 1937. It was converted into a museum in 1998 and opened to the public in 2001. The original structure comprised a private residence for the ruler and his family within a complex of courtyards.

Wadi Adventure Wadi Adventure Al Ain is the Middle East’s first and only man-made whitewater rafting, kayaking, surfing and wakeboarding facility.

Green Mubazzarah Park The Green Mubazzarah Park and Hot Springs were developed by Sheikh Zayed, the founding President of the UAE, and opened to the public in 2004. A favourite weekend and holiday destination, the facility offers hot springs and a desert oasis complete with lawns, flowing streams, a man-made lake, spas and dozens of chalets.

Jebel Hafeet Rising 1,240 metres, Jebel Hafeet stands guard over Al Ain and borders Oman. Significant fossil discoveries have been made in the area, which are vital pieces in the jigsaw of the city’s ancient history. You can drive or, if you have the stamina, cycle to the top via a winding highway to see the incredible views.

Al Jahili Fort The picturesque Al Jahili Fort is one of the UAE’s most historic buildings. It was erected in 1891 to defend the city and protect the precious palm groves. The former headquarters of the Oman Trucial Scouts, the force that protected the mountain passes and kept inter-tribal peace, it also served as a residence for the local governor. It is set in beautifully landscaped gardens and visitors are encouraged to explore it. www.discover-dubai.ae

Souq Al Qattara Dating back to the mid-20th century and founded by the late Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan on the palm-lined road linking Al Ain’s Al Qattara and Al Jimi oases, the historic Souq Al Qattara has been renovated and re-opened. A traditional handicrafts market takes place here every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from October to May, and there is also a popular arts centre featuring hundreds of modern exhibits, workshops, a cafe and a library.

Hili Archaeological Park Just 10 kilometres outside Al Ain on the road to Dubai are the Hili Archaeological Gardens. Combining both a public garden and the archaeological site, this is a popular place for tourists and residents alike. Hili Archaeological Park was developed to highlight the ancient monuments of Al Ain and to make them easily accessible to visitors.

Most of the monuments are of the Umm an-Nar period which dates from about 2500 BCE to 2000 BCE and is named after the island near Abu Dhabi on which remains of this important culture were first discovered.

Ras Al Khaimah

In stark contrast to the glitz and glamour of Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah (known simply as RAK) is a nature lover’s dream. The UAE’s most northern emirate and less than an hour’s drive from Dubai, RAK offers magnificent landscapes, breathtaking coastlines and rich, terracotta desert planes. Surrounded by the rugged Hajar Mountains, RAK is a popular escape for outdoor enthusiasts with numerous camping options and outdoor activities.

Like the other emirates, RAK has seen enormous growth in recent years resulting in a free-trade zone, an artificial island with luxury resorts, new leisure facilities and a mountain road offering glorious views. Much of the development is based in an area called Al Hamra, located around 15km south of RAK City. Dhayah Fort This 16th century mud-brick fort was built in a strategic hilltop position facing the gulf and it played a major role as the last point of resistance during the British attacks in 1819 against the tribes of Ras Al Khaimah. Today it is crowned by a fortress, built during the 19th century on the foundations of much older structures. It is the only hilltop fort still existing in the UAE and offers a fantastic view of the lush palm gardens, the sea and the dramatic mountains.

Pearl Museum Pearl diving was once one of RAK’s major industries and the Ras Al Khaimah Pearl Museum unveils the harsh life of pearl divers and shows us how pearl harvesting played a major role in the emirate’s economy.

Musandam Bordering Oman’s enclave of Musandam, RAK is the perfect base from which to pop across the border to enjoy a stunning dhow cruise and the incredible Oman scenery.

Ras Al Khaimah National Museum This museum is located in a fort that was the residence of the ruling family up until the early 1960s. The museum houses an excellent collection of archaeological and ethnological artifacts including a collection of documents, manuscripts and treaties between the rulers of RAK and Great Britain.

Jazirat Al-Hamra Located just outside RAK city, this abandoned fishing village is now a ghost town having been left to slowly decay.

The Emirati inhabitants here would have made their living out from pearl diving and fishing, but the villagers all left in the 1960s and the dry desert climate has helped preserve the buildings.
