First Union VBS 2017 First Union MBC Adds A Spin to Their

26 Teachers for VBS 2017

My Experience as a VBS Teacher Numerous times I have attended Vacation Bible School at the “U” and I truly enjoyed myself, but that was from a student perspective. This year things changed. A couple months ago, I was approached and asked if I would like to be an assistant teacher. I felt honored and I was excited to do it, so I asked for more information like what age group would I be assigned to. She told me that my class would be the adults from ages 30 to 49. My nervousness immediately kicked in because the only thought/question racing through my mind was “Will they respect me and listen to me as a teacher?’ The reason being is that I am only 22 years old and I did not know how they would react. Although I was skeptical at first, I later accepted the position. The first night of VBS is about to start, my heart was beating out of my chest and I was anxious to see how the night will go. It was overwhelming. Everything I studied in the curriculum went away from me, I ended up being so unprepared, and my students (the adults) could tell. They would ask me questions and I could not give them any answers. It was so embarrassing. When I made it home that night, disappointed is the perfect word to describe how I was felt. I was tired of sulking and feeling sorry for myself, so I did the only thing I could do. I prayed. I asked the Lord to give me the strength, the knowledge, and the endurance to be the best teacher I could be for the remainder of the week. The rest of VBS was a breeze! The Lord was speaking through me and my students were learning. I felt so accomplished. Don’t tell me my God isn’t awesome and on time!!! My overall teacher experience was truly an unforgettable one! I would not have traded it for anything because I stepped out of my comfort zone, stepped out on faith, and I grew, not only mentally, but most importantly, spiritually. There are some people that I must thank. Thank you Lord for using me as a vessel

SAFETY TIPS FOR OUTDOOR COOKING

Bar-b-ques, Family Reunions, and Picnics (just to name a few) will bring the cooking from the cleansanitary kitchen to the outdoors. Here are a few tips to keep everyone healthy during these fun, outdoor gatherings: 6

Volume 11; Issue 3| ALL IN THE FAMILY

www.all-inthe-family.com

Handle Your Food with Clean Hands:

While your backyard BBQ pit may become your outdoor kitchen in the summer, it is likely you are missing an important kitchen fixture: a sink outdoors. Make sure you wash your hands before, during, and after handling foods. If there isn't a sink available, keep a package of moist towelettes close by the grill master.

Dish the Dishtowel:

One of the biggest BBQ blunders is to use the same dishtowel repeatedly to wipe your hands and juicy spills from bacteria-laden raw meat, poultry, and fish. Instead, reach for the "one-time only" paper towels.

Baste For Taste:

When marinating raw meats, separation is also the name of the game. Using the same brush to baste raw meat and then "finishing off" cooked meats with the same brush is a blunder in the making. Either wash the brush in hot soapy water or use two different brushes. Also, don't use the basting marinade as a finishing sauce as it could contain ugly foodborne pathogens. Either boil the marinade first, or better yet, make a new marinade as the serving sauce.

Consider the Food Thermometer Your Best Friend:

If anyone is going to be invited to your BBQ, it should be your friendly food thermometer. A poke with the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat is the only safe way to know if it is safe to eat. News flash: The FDA just lowered their recommended cooking temperature for all meats, including pork: Whole meat should reach 145 degrees F and then sit for 3 minutes before consuming it. • •

Ground meats (beef, veal, lamb, pork) should reach 160 degrees F. Poultry (ground and whole) should reach 165 degrees F.

Cool It!

Keep a refrigerator thermometer in your cooler to make sure that the ice or ice packs are keeping your perishables below 40 degrees F.

Remember the Two or One Hour Rule:

Foods kept at room temperature for two hours need to be tossed. In hot weather (90 degrees F or above), foods left out for more than one hour should be discarded. Source: ShareCare

Spiritual Food

Jessica Williams, Assistant Editor Original post April 2015

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2

As Christians, we should set ourselves apart from the ungodly and worldly deeds of this demoralizing society we live in today. Of course, we are going to be tempted, go through trials and tribulations, and sin. That’s a given, because none of us are perfect. We all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). All God wants us to do is follow His instructions He has left for us and try to be like the only model of perfection that He manifested in the flesh, which is our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. I asked the Lord, a couple of weeks ago “What can I do to be the servant you need me to be? Sometimes, I’m so sad and feel so alone to the point that I feel like giving up. I know that my attitude, at times, is not of you. I need you to help me and show me some ways to be happy and not let the issues of the world bring me down. It seems like from the time I wake up in the morning, my day is already bad.”

Volume 11; Issue 3| ALL IN THE FAMILY

www.all-inthe-family.com

1. Express gratitude We all should thank the Lord for all He has done for us, all He is doing for us, and for all He is going to do for us. We, sometimes, get so hung up on what’s bad that we forget to appreciate the good. “O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” –Psalms 107:1

2. Set your intentions for the day

AUGUST 2017 ~ VOL 11: ISSUE 3

Our God truly works in mysterious ways. He answered my question, and it was in the most unexpected way….. through an Instagram (social media) post. It was called “5 things happy people do before getting out of bed.” As I read each one, I thought about a scripture to validate each point and I decided to share it with you all. Instead of the original title, I decided to call it “5 things that happy CHRISTIANS should do before getting out of bed”:

Start your day off with a positive attitude and continue to keep that attitude, no matter what negativity come your way. Always keep God first in all that you do. “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” –Proverbs 3:6

3. Take 5 long deep breaths in and out Keep yourself calm and serene. When you are a child of the Most High God, you have no worries. Use the breath God gave you, not everyone has that same opportunity. Visit a cemetery and see how blessed you are to have breath in your body. “Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.” –Psalms 150:6

4. Smile for no reason-just flex the muscle Everyone goes through trials and tribulations in their life but God always brings us through, stronger than when we first went in it. He woke us up, that’s a reason to smile. Be happy. If you smile, He’ll smile on you and bless you. “The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:” - Numbers 6:25

5. Forgive yourself for yesterday’s mistake None of us are perfect. We all are going to make mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up about it, just note your mistakes and change them. Changing for the better is a good thing. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse is from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9 Hopefully, this will touch your heart and help you as much as it has me. We are all too blessed to be stressed! Amen.

Deacon Willie Tim

Sunrise: November 22, 1919 ď – Sunset: July 12, 2017

'A Soldier' 2 Timothy 2:3-4 3 4

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Man marvels at the longevity of life as if he has made some great accomplishment with the passing of each year. But God holds time in his hand, and His infinity winks at the few decades that man walks the earth. For one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day! How fragile, then, is the life of man; nor knowing from one day to the next when our last breath will drawn, and our Spirit released from the bands of mortality. First Union - it is with a very heavy heart that I write to inform you that the Eldest Statesmen of First Union has gone the last mile of the way. At 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2017; Deacon Willie Tim made the transition from the land of the dying to the land of the living. He served the Lord faithfully for as long as he could, and when his physical body could no longer go; he yet provided wisdom, encouragement, and advice. First Union has truly lost a legend on this day, leaving an empty place in our hearts which can never be filled. Rev. B.E. Garmon, Sr., M.Div-Pastor First Union Missionary Baptist Church www.all-inthe-family.com

ILLIE TIM was born on November 2, 1919 in Thomasville, Georgia to the late Albert Tim and Priscilla Wackin. After attending the public schools of Georgia, he joined the US Army where he served as a Radio Operation Serviceman. After being honorably discharged as a WWII Veteran, he began his life as a civilian as a construction worker, crossing guard, and a meat salesman. At one time, he also owned his own convenience store located on Chelsea Street, just a brief walk from the Church that he called home for many years.

Deacon Willie Tim along with other members of the Deacon Board

During this time, he met and married the late Golla Tim, who herself was also a member of First Union. After the Lord called her home in 2003, he met Bernice Moore, whom he married on September 27, 2007, and would remain together as one until his transition. Deacon Tim leaves his devoted wife and First Union faithful member, Bernice, to cherish his precious memories. Along with a host of relatives and friends, he also leaves his cousin, Josephine Bridges, also a First Union member. Deacon Willie Tim was a faithful and dedicated member of First Union MBC for over sixty-seven years, and until his death was the eldest member at 97 years old! He also held the position of being First Union's male member with the most tenure. Deacon Tim was one of the founding members and President of the Male Chorus and the Adult Usher Board. He also served as a member of the No. 1 Choir and served in Sunday School. Later he would become Co-Advisor to both the Greeters and Ushers.

...with the Greeters Ministry, where he served as Co-Advisor

... with the Adult Ushers, where he also served as Co-Advisor

To his First Union family, Deacon Tim leaves a legacy of a man dedicated his Church and to his God. He will be remembered as a kind and soft-spoken man, full of faith and always ready with a kind word and words of wisdom. You would be hard-pressed to find a member whose life was not personally touched by Deacon Tm. He was a quiet man, but never hesitant to show love and concern.

"I'm Free" Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I head Him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that place at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things, I too, will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.

Dr. Gwyn and a few of PYEF's SUPERHEROES!

PYEF Mentoring Program

'Our program started with reading an article titled, "Failure Factories" written in the St. Pete Times newspaper. This article sparked a chain of events that included volunteering at a local elementary school with a group of second grade boys. This group of boys had behavior challenges in school and struggled with reading and self control. P.Y.E.F. staff utilized unique reading techniques that empowered the children and gave them a chance to love learning.' The rest of our story has yet to be written.

"Our mission is to continue to support our youth within our surrounding communities by utilizing a collaborative approach to education by incorporating social acclamation to empower our youth with a new perspective of life and leadership through differential learning techniques that are both passionate and impactful, while increasing technology awareness in order to build a better foundation for tomorrow." ABOUT US PYEF (Presley Youth and Education Foundation, Inc.) is a non-profit organization that provides unique tutoring services for children that struggle in school. The PYEF Mentoring Program has been in operation in the Palm River area (Hillsborough County, FL) since February 2016. The program is designed to work with children from Second to Fifth grade in economically challenged communities on enhancing their reading skills while building character. Our signature process involves the use of differential learning techniques to address social and academic challenges that interfere with learning. Our process pairs the learner’s current curriculum with his/her point of interest to enhance the joy of learning. To motivate and aspire youths to appreciate reading through developing a foundation that involves the utilization of a creative imagination, superheroes coupled with real life challenges. Our goal is to build character and morale while strengthening literacy skills over the interval of ten months. The objective is to light the fire of reading and positive behavior through the use of critical thinking. The impact of this program will have long term benefits to the children and the effects are better measured after years of implementation but we have seen some immediate responses. We understand how critical it is to the learning process to provide support while concentrating maximum effort on youth learning.

Q&A Why is PYEF just for boys? Dr. Gwyn: "We had to start somewhere. I figured that after a few trial runs of the program we can then add girls, so in 2017-2018 school year we plan to start a group of girls as well." Do you run this organization alone? Dr. Gwyn: "I am the president of the non-profit, however, we do have a board that is made up of members here in the state of Florida, North Korea, and New York. Each of the board members add a unique flavor to the organization and its goals." If not, who else is involved and what is their relationship and duties? Dr. Gwyn: "There are many people that are involved, however, we are currently growing during the summertime in order to make our organization fully functional. Up to this point it has really been just me and members of my staff going to the school and working with the children. However, I found quickly that I cannot do this all by myself and that I needed some assistance. So this summer, I have spent some time out in the community looking for volunteers speaking to reporters and involving myself in community activities." What qualifications do you hold to lead/co-lead this organization? Dr. Gwyn: "I currently hold a Bachelor's Degree and Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a PhD in Organization and Management. I also am a Greenbelt with Six Sigma. I've worked in non-profit organizations and with government agencies for more than fifteen years advocating for children's rights and a life free of child abuse. In addition, for more than five years, I have owned and operated a successful consulting firm assisting doctoral students here in the Tampa Bay area."

If you would like to support Dr. Gwyn in her effort to help at risk students to reach their full potential, please visit PYEF's website at http://www.presley -yef.org/ and give a monetary donation (by clicking on the donate button on the bottom of the HOME page) and/or by purchasing their book, 'The Boys of Rebecca Road', an e-book written about boyhood shenanigans and one particular alligator named Brutus (just $5.99). 22

The Church A church trustee a church trustee is a layman who takes care of the secular business of running a church. Trustees manage finances and property, and ensure the church is compliant with any legal requirements. In the early church, seven men were selected to oversee particular needs within the church (Acts 6:1-7) so the apostles could focus on teaching and prayer. Deacons were later added to local churches as official servants who handled certain areas of church ministry. While deacons generally dealt with the needs of people within the church, the role of a church trustee has developed in recent generations to serve the needs related to finance and property issues. The Deacons’ service set a precedent for some of what trustees do today. Since the role of the trustee is not defined in the Bible, a church can choose to use trustees in a variety of ways. This role is not required in Scripture, though some U.S. states legally require trustees for organizational purposes. Certainly, those who serve as trustees should be people of high character and have abilities in appropriate areas, such as skills in finance, construction, or building maintenance. So, whereas a deacon meets the needs of the people, a trustee meets the needs of the property. In some churches, trustees also serve on the official board of directors of the church as a non-profit organization. In these cases, those serving should be people with organizational and leadership abilities who are able to successfully conduct the business of the church according to biblical principles. Accountability should also be set up and provided, as trustees will likely oversee church finances and spending. Many churches with trustees also include the responsibility of risk management and liability issues. In these cases, involving trustees with know-ledge of insurance, liability, and legal issues related to non-profit organizations would be of tremendous assistance. 24

Volume 11; Issue 3| ALL IN THE FAMILY

www.all-inthe-family.com

Trustees Still other trustees are involved in longrange congregational planning and church vision. While this planning should also include the church's other leaders, such as elders and deacons, these combined efforts can greatly assist a church to best navigate future plans and communicate them effectively with church members. As trustees, each individual must also be willing and able to work together as a team. 1 Corinthians 12 notes that each person is important, yet must also work together to operate effectively.

www.all-inthe-family.com

The position of "trustee" is not a biblically mandated office; rather, it is a practicality to aid the appropriation, maintenance, and disposition of church property. Although trustees are not mentioned in the Bible, their role is biblically appropriate. The New Testament calls us to be good stewards of our blessings, to maintain order in the church, and to use our gifts to benefit the body. 1 Peter 4:10 also comments about fitting the roles of church members with their abilities: "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace."

First Union MBC - VBS 2017

First Union held its annual VBS in the same fashion as always... filled with Biblical education, food, games, and fellowship! Different from years past were the assistants assigned to support the teachers. This year, Pastor Garmon (read his statement on the following page) chose to use 'novices' to assist our more seasoned scholars of the Word, and looking at the final scores of the classes when the points were tallied, it all paid off! Congratulations to Pastor Garmon and the VBS Committee, Teachers, Culinary, and any and every person who pitched in to bring VBS 2017 to fruition.

Volume 11; Issue 3| ALL IN THE FAMILY

www.all-inthe-family.com

First Union MBC - VBS 2017 I am definitely an advocate of helping people to grow; both Spiritually, as well as in the secular world. If I can teach someone a new skill or help them to refine the skills they already have; I am more than willing to do all that I can. As Pastor, I foster this same sentiment when it comes to the growth of the Congregation; thus we have reached out in the past couple of years to give more people the opportunity to grow in the Word of God, and nothing does this better than ‘teaching’! 1 Peter 2:2 says that new born babies in Christ should desire sincere milk that they may grow; this is not to say that our Apprentice Teachers are ‘babes’, but they are undertaking new challenges which will refine and enhance their own Spiritual relationship as they share the Word of God with others. The Bible has made it clear that none of us are going to be here forever, this becomes very apparent with each Homegoing celebration. Therefore, we have a responsibility to develop others who will be able to carry on in our stead, and to pass on to them all that God has given us in hopes that they may even excel even further. It is truly a blessing to have people at First Union who are willing to accept the challenge to move beyond their comfort zone and to stand up and stand out for the Lord!
