From the Editor...

Forgive anyone who has caused you pain or harm. Keep in mind that forgiving is not for others. It is for you. Forgiving is not forgetting. It is remembering without anger. It frees up your power, heals your body, mind and spirit. Forgiveness opens up a pathway to a new place of peace where you can persist despite what has happened to you. ~Les Brown GOD'S GOT ALL POWER!

PA S S I N G O F T H E B ATO N

Jessica Williams, Assistant Editor

There comes a time in every person’s life when e they must hand something over, give something up, pass it down to someone else, because their season has come and gone. You can compare it to a relay race, where you ‘pass the baton’ to the next member of your team, with the expectation of them keeping your team in the race for the chance of an ultimate win. This type of scenario can be seen anywhere, even in the Church. Yes, in the church. I, for one, have ‘passed the baton’ to someone else before. When I was sixteen, the challenge of being the Youth President of my church’s Youth Department was bestowed upon me. Although being anxious and not too sure of what would be expected of me, I stepped up to the plate and took my responsibility seriously. The challenge of being the Youth Vice-President was bestowed upon Miss Alexis Wheatley. Although five years younger than myself, she worked just as hard as I did. Wherever I was, she would be there as well, learning what needed to be done to keep the ministry going. Alexis has always been a hardworking and active member in the ministry. When the time came for me to start my journey as a young adult, the Youth Supervisors did the annual ‘changing of youth officers’, and although she was still vice president for that year, Alexis remained the hard worker she always was. A year passed, the new changing of youth officers happened, and Alexis followed in my footsteps as Youth President. Seeing a lot of the same traits in her that I had holding that position (work ethic wise), made me proud to see her receive the position because I always felt she was deserving of it and I knew that she would excel at it. She has truly carried on the high standard for any youth that would love to hold that position. Alexis is now a graduate of Tampa Bay Technical High School, my alma mater (GO TITANS!), and will be starting off her college journey as a Knight at the University of Central Florida! So, I would personally like to say: Alexis, I am extremely proud of all your accomplishments thus far, whether it be Church-based, academic, or even extracurricular. You are truly a star! I can’t wait to see what God has in store for you! Remember, you are a child of the Most High and He will always be there, even when life gets tough. The world is at your fingertips! Keep God first in ALL you do! I love you very much and I am excited to see you take the world by storm and be the change you are DESTINED to be!! But I have a quick question for you, Alexis …. who will YOU be ‘passing the baton’ to?

1 Chronicles 4:10

by Pastor B.E. Garmon, Sr.

The word “infinity” means ‘without bounds’, and that is one of the best words to use when attempting to describe the size of God. God is ‘Omnipotent’, which means that He has all power. God is ‘Omniscient’, which means that He knows everything! God is ’Omnipresent’, which means that He is everywhere at all times. With such a massive God on our side, there is ‘nothing’ that we can’t do! But did you know that there is something that God “cannot” do? That is correct, there is something that the all-powerful, all knowing, and all present God cannot do! It says so right in the Bible! In Titus And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou 1:2 it clearly says that God “cannot lie”!!! (i.e. fail) And since wouldest bless me indeed, and God ‘cannot’ lie, we can take confidence and rest assured that enlarge my coast, and that everything that God has told us in His Word, He will do! He has told us in His Word that whatever we ask in His name and within His will; He will do it! (John 14:13-14; 1 John 5:14). But Jesus also said that we must ‘believe’ in what we are asking for, or we are just wasting our time (Mark 11:24; Hebrews 11:6). We have been reassured from The sovereign God Who has EVERYTHING within His control, and Who cannot lie, that if we ask in faith, He will answer our prayers! What better reassurance could there be?!

thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.  1 Chronicles 4:10 

The best motivator to pray is answered prayer! When you have experienced God answering a prayer in your life, your faith is increased, and you are the more encouraged for subsequent prayers. The more encouraged you are, the more your faith increases, the bigger your prayers become! But how much is ‘too much’ for God? Is there such a thing as asking God for too much? Is there such a thing as having too much faith in God? Is there such a thing as trusting God too much? - 14 -

All In The Family Magazine

1 Chronicles 4:10 we read about a man by the name of “Jabez”. We don’t know much about Jabez but are do know from his genealogy that he is from the tribe of Judah. Although we don’t know why, we are told that Jabez was more honorable than his brethren, and he is certainly a praying man! Not only did he have a strong prayer life, but he also demonstrated firm faith in God! Let’s examine some important aspects of Jabez’s prayer: (1) That God would bless him indeed — Although we often focus on the tangible, Spiritual blessings are the best blessings! God's blessings, whether spiritual or tangible, are definitive and certain. They are reflective of the loving nature of God, and He takes pleasure in blessing His people! (2) That God would enlarge his coast — God has a way of using what people already have and multiplying that into much more (e.g. five loaves and two fishes). Instead of asking for something new, Jabez only asked God to increase what he already had. (3) That God's hand might be with him — Often people are asking for worldly ‘things’ but overlook the One Who holds everything in His hands. If we have the hand of God upon us, then we have all that God has in His hands, which is everything!

blessings! He was obviously familiar with the promises that God made to the Israelites, as well as the many times that God had blessed others. Jabez, therefore, felt that his life was in such condition that He would take God at His Word; and he called upon God according to His Word. As a result of Jabez’s faithful actions, God not only heard Jabez’s prayer, but God also answered Jabez’s prayer — in other words — God gave Jabez exactly what he asked for! One of the many wonderful things about God is the fact that He does not change (Malachi 3:6). Therefore, we can read of the nature of God anywhere in the Bible and know with confidence that He will be consistent in His responses and actions the same today as He did in biblical times. We have numerous promises in God’s Word that He will give us that which we ask for (John 14:13-14; John 14:14; John 15:16; John 16:23-26), if we ask properly, and in faith. These Scriptures, and many more, are reassuring us today that God will do for us just like He did for Jabez thousands of years ago! All we have to do is take God at His Word, TRUST and BELIEVE that God will do all that He said, and then we must be willing to Dare To Dream Big! I Remain In “His” Service…

(4) That God would keep him from evil — It’s difficult to ask for blessings when you are living a life of sin. When requesting blessings from God, we must first be sure that we are doing our part. (5) God granted that which he requested. Jabez definitely had some familiarity with God and with prayer, he wasn’t afraid to pray, and he ‘dared’ to ask God for blessings. Not just any ole’ blessings, but he asked for “Big” August/September 2018

Editor: Pastor:

What other ministries at First Union do you lead? Women's Ministry and Bible Study.

Editor: Pastor:

What impact has your leadership had on this ministry? Gauging success or lack thereof in "ministry" is rather abstract due to the Spiritual nature of ministry. In ministry, success cannot be measured by numbers of people, money, or any other worldly tangibles. But rather it is things like; how many lives have been changed? How many relationships have been connected? How many relationships have been renewed? How many souls have been led out of darkness and into His marvelous light? All of which no person can ever determined, for God has reserved such knowledge for Himself. My job (as Pastor) is simply to give the Word of God to the people, and in the day of Harvest He will separate the wheat from the tares, and He, alone, will determine whether He will say, Well done; or Depart from Me!

Editor: Pastor:

What do you like most about First Union? There is so much potential for so many great things to come!

Editor: Pastor

What would you change about First Union if you could? Broader vision and open minds for those in leadership positions.

Editor: Pastor:

Do you have a Spouse? If, so what is her name? Mrs. Carla R. Garmon.

Editor: Pastor:

Do you have any children and/or grandchildren? If so, how many? Three (3) children and seven (7) grandchildren.

Editor: Pastor:

Does your family attend First Union with you? Yes.

Editor: Pastor:

What do you like to do in your spare time? I'm not sure I understand the words "spare time"; but I can say that I most enjoy studying the Word of God. I spend as much time as I can in God's Word, and I thoroughly enjoy it. Outside of that, motorcycle riding and roller skating are my next two favorite leisure activities.

AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER? On the morning of June 16, 2018, fire spread through the New Macedonia M.B. Church, where Rev. Paul Buster is the Pastor. Although no lives were lost, the building is in utter disrepair. But has that deterred Pastor Buster and his faithful congregation? Not at all! They held Church outside until a brother in the ministry offered them a temporary shelter to hold their services. Yes, he believed God when He told him that he is his brothers keeper! Just as the helping hand that reached out to Pastor Buster knew that God expects us to look out for each other, especially those in need, we should be looking for ways to be our brothers keeper, also. A 'GO FUND ME' page has been setup for donations to restore New Macedonia. No donation is too small!!! If for whatever reason you choose not use the GO FUND ME app, please contact Rev. Buster directly. There is a link on this page for those who would like to donate using the GO FUND ME app. Please remember, but for the Grace of God, that could have been our House of Worship. And I truly believe that God expects us to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need, and ask with a sincere heart, 'is there anything that I can do to help?' So... Are you your brother's keeper?

YES... YOU ARE!

Forgetfulness and Aging: What's Normal? Keep Calm and ... How’s That Go Again?

Odds are, you won’t be as flexible at age 60 as you were at 20. Or as fast. Or strong. Time affects your body, and your brain comes right along for the ride. Connections between brain cells that make and pull up memories change as we age. And the proteins and hormones that do upkeep in our brains don’t work as well. As we get older, it’s good to know the difference between typical forgetfulness and something you probably should mention to your doctor.

It’s Not All in the Details. Typical: You forget to meet up with a friend but remember later on. You recall that wedding last year, but you’re a little hazy on who was there. You had that great phone call with Henry last week, but what does he do for work again? Warning: You miss appointments left and right. You ask friends and family for details over and over again. You forget about events you went to recently or conversations you just had.

Beware the Numbers Typical: You make a mistake balancing your checkbook once in a while. You forget to pay a bill here and there. Or you just added 3 tablespoons of sugar instead of teaspoons. Warning: It’s harder to focus, make a plan, and solve problems. Numbers feel like a foreign language, making it tough to follow a recipe or make sense of your household budget.

When It’s Not Just Fun and Games Typical: You need help setting the clock on the microwave or recording your favorite show. You blank for a minute on whether a straight beats a flush in poker or if it’s the other way around. Warning: You can’t work your stove. You forget the rules of bridge or basketball or tennis, games you’ve played or watched for decades.

Where Did I Put That? Typical: You check your pockets, the kitchen table, your car. You go back over all your steps before, “Ah! My keys.” Warning: You put things in odd places, like your phone ends up in the freezer. You can’t remember what steps to retrace, or you blame someone for stealing things.

What’s Today Again? Typical: Once in a while you have to stop and think about what day it is, but it comes to you, even if takes a bit. Warning: The whole idea of time is confusing. You get what’s happening now, but trying to think about something that happened last week or is coming up tomorrow leaves you feeling lost.

How Did I Get Here? Typical: You stroll into the kitchen and can’t for the life of you remember why. You forget the occasional street name when giving directions. It might take a beat or two, but you remember how to get to familiar places. Warning: You can’t find your way home or get lost or feel confused in places you know well.

Hand Me the Whatchamacallit Typical: You forget the name of something. It’s on the tip of your tongue, but you can’t quite reel it in. Warning: You call things by the wrong name, sometimes really odd ones. ”Spoon” might come out “bed.” You stop in the middle of a sentence and have no idea what you were saying. You have a hard time following conversations. I Just Want a Little ‘Me’ Time Typical: The mix of work, family, and social demands leaves you wiped out and craving down time, even from things you like. Warning: You can’t keep up with sports teams you normally follow. You try to get out of spending time with people to hide the problems you’re having. August/September 2018

Good Ol’ What’s His Name Typical : You swear you almost have it, it’s right there, but … gahh! You just spaced on your friend’s name. Or you just called your grandson by your son’s name instead. Warning: You actually can’t remember your son’s name.

Lapses in Self-Care Typical: You rush out of the house without brushing your teeth. Or, worse, zipping your fly. Warning: It’s not just that you don’t remember to do things, you don’t recall how. You’re halfway through getting dressed and find yourself confused.

If It’s Not Typical, Then What? Lots of things can cause memory problems. People often worry about Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia. That’s one possibility, but other things can be behind it, and some of those can be reversed. For example, It could be a lack of B12, a vitamin that’s key for your brain. Or depression, a thyroid problem, or even not drinking enough fluids.

Seriously, It’s Not an Issue Typical: You’re concerned about your memory, but your family’s not. You remember when you forget things and what that moment feels like. Warning: Your family’s worried about you, but you don’t know what they’re talking about. You’re not aware that it’s happening.

When to See Your Doctor If any of those warning signs sounded familiar or it’s affecting your daily life -- your work, hobbies, and relationships -- go to your doctor. It’s also a good idea to see him if someone close to you wants you to get checked out. Normal memory problems can make you pause a moment, but they don’t keep you from going about your life. How to Prevent Memory Loss Do all the usual things that are good for you: Be social, get exercise, eat well, sleep enough, and don’t smoke. Think of your brain like a muscle -- use it or lose it. Play games like crosswords and Sudoku. Read books or magazines that challenge you. Learn a foreign language or a new instrument. Do projects that take planning, like quilting or a garden.
