SHADEZ OF HUE, INC. What began as a social gathering, turned into a vision from God!

To My First Union Family: It was a blessing to have experienced and celebrated the 95th anniversary of the church that I have called ‘Home” for the past 14 years (I was born into the Church, but joined 14 years ago)! Not only did I experience this grand occasion as a member of the ‘U’, also, being a part of the anniversary committee opened my eyes and I saw all of what it takes to execute a successful event. Besides that, running for Queen of First Union MBC during our anniversary was something that I will never forget and being crowned Queen on April 23rd, 2017 was the ‘icing on the cake’. Although I am very appreciative and grateful for winning the title Queen, ultimately, my goal was to financially assist my First Union Family as we make our ‘home’ the best! I have so many people to thank for showing their love and support during my running. First off, I would like to thank my mom/ ‘campaign manager’, Without her, I wouldn’t have known how to approach an idea like this. From her persuading people to take out an ad in our souvenir book and/or asking people to be patrons to promoting my campaign via social media, she was my right hand through this whole process. Thanks, mom! To: Pat Scott, Doris Scott, Debra Smalls, Brenda Reese- Brown, Elizabeth Carmen, Yasmin Flowers, Joann Avery, Shawn the Barber, Pressure Washing by Manny, THANK YOU! Jessica Cliatt, Michael Hudgins, Jr., Jennifer Roberts, Adilia Giovanetti & Family, Thomas & Lutuece Walsh, Bernard & Johnnie Nell Reese, THANK YOU! Perry & Linda Walker, Robert & Sarah Barnum, Michael & Dorothy Hudgins, James & Twanda Woodall, Yvonne Hudgins, Phyllis Hudgins, and Connie Williams, THANK YOU! This was truly a joyous time at the “U” and I am glad that the Lord let me enjoy this moment with YOU, YOU, and most importantly, YOU! With All Love,

You have “GOT” to be kidding me! There is no way that this year is already nearly half over! Typically, everyone considers the month of June to be the half way point of the year; but technically speaking, July 1st is the middle-day of the year. There are 182 days before July 1st, and 182 days after July 1st. Regardless, we are still only a couple weeks away from being at the very center of the year! Where did the first half of 2017 go? Although it does seem to be moving fast, thus far 2017 has been a great year around The “U”!!! We spent the first part of the year celebrating our 95 th Anniversary, and we’ve had some great times that will go forever be remembered. If anyone ever says that they don’t have anything to do at First Union, it is only because they DON’T WANT to do anything! Our Church Calendar is teaming with opportunities for each and every member to get up and get involved; and if we don’t do it for ourselves, then who will? It has been said by ‘them’ of old, “it’s a mighty poor frog that won’t croak in his own pond”. And that is my message to First Union for the remainder of the year – This is “OUR” Church, and no one can support us like us! Whenever something is taking place at First Union, you should have a ‘desire’ to be present and support your own Church! It doesn’t matter what Ministry it is, because all of the Ministries belong to First Union, and if you are a member of First Union, then you should have a since of commitment to support that Ministry and every Ministry of the Church! Thus far during the first six months of 2017, we’ve experienced some great events at The U! In January, we participated in the MLK Parade where First Union’s Youth was the only choir to sing at the pre-parade celebration! We had an awesome Old Fashioned day where participants received some ‘appropriate’ old fashioned prizes! February brought the Youth Anniversary and the African Attire Day, where again, some of the participants received some ‘cultured’ prizes! In March we recognized our Senior Saints and had a completely awesome preanniversary musical! And in additional to the Greatest Holiday of the year (Resurrection Sunday), April brought us a record number of people that turned in 40 Days In The Word, along with an incredible climax of First Union’s 95th Anniversary with an off-the-chain Banquet, three-night worship services, and a Sunday celebration that featured a massive 95 Voice Choir that I could

have listened to for the next 95 years! Just a few weeks ago in May, the men celebrated our Mothers by taking them back to the ‘Olde Skoole’! If the second half of the year goes as fast as the first half, then we best be about our Father’s Business, because the end of the year will be hear before we know it! The men are definitely looking forward to the Father’s Dinner in June. July will bring us the always spectacular Vacation Bible School – for all ages! August will bring the Church Picnic and Family & Friends Day. In September we will recognize the kick-off of football season with Jersey Day, we’ll learn more about our own bodies during the Health Fair, and a certain couple will celebrate 35 years of marriage! In October, there is a rumor that some dude will be celebrating his 9-year anniversary, and we’ll go further with learning more about our health during the Breast Cancer Workshop. We’ll close the month of October out by calling for all “cheaters” to come on down! With the coming of November, it is at this point of the year that we intentionally and by design, slow things way down and allow families to spend time together during the ‘holiday season’. The only event in November is the Youth Workshop, and the only event in December is the Christmas Program. Then we all come together for Watch Nite so we can prepare (if the Lord should tarry) to do it all again next year! Whenever people come forward seeking membership at First Union, I ask them if they are willing to support the Church Spiritually, Physically, and Financially. Supporting your Church “spiritually” means things like, praying for your Church, lifting your voice in song during worship, and conducting yourself in a Godly manner at all times. Supporting your Church “physically” means showing up for worship services and other events and activities. Supporting your Church “financially” means giving (money) to the best of your ability. I would like to take this opportunity to remind the Congregation that it takes all three of these factors for any Church to be effective in their Kingdom Building efforts. This is what being a member of a Congregation is all about, coming together to support each other, encourage one another, fellowship and worship! This… is what Church is all about! (Hebrews 10:25) As we embark upon the second half of 2017, I would like to re-encourage every member of First Union to please re-evaluate your personal commitments, first to GOD, and then to your Church! We have much yet to accomplish this year and the Church is only as strong as the support it receives from its Congregation. A Leader with no followers is just another brother taking a walk; and a Church without the support of its Congregation is not even a Church! I am truly excited and looking forward to all that the Lord has in store for us for the remainder of this year, and I certainly hope that you don’t allow the devil to keep you at home and miss out on so many blessings! As for me, you won’t find me at home during any of it, but you will be able to find me… somewhere around The “U”!!! I Remain In “HIS” Service…

STATE OF THE CHURCH June 2017

If you’ve been attending Bible Class on Wednesday nights, then you already know that we have been teaching on “faith” for more than a year. So important is faith until God said we cannot please Him without it! (Hebrews 11:6) Attending, maintaining, and especially running a Church, takes an incredible amount of faith, and because we can’t ‘see’ faith (2 Corinthians 5:7) it can be extremely difficult to evaluate the Church’s progress, or lack thereof. When it comes to evaluating the success or failure of a Church, we must first keep in mind that God never told us to be ‘successful’… from man’s perspective. The world has pre-programmed us to determine what the world’s definition of success is, and unfortunately this has migrated its way into the Church over the years. From the world’s point of view, when a person makes a lot of money, has expensive cars, homes, clothes, etc; then they are considered to be successful. Many Churches have adopted this same philosophy; when a Church has lots of members and a huge bank account, then that Church is considered to be successful. But the Bible tells us that God’s ways are as far above man’s ways as the Heavens are from the earth! (Isaiah 55:9) Therefore, we cannot use man’s standards to determine the success or failure of a Church – that determinations is reserved for God Himself. Our task is simply to remain faithful to what He has called us to do, whatever that may be. You will learn of your success or failure, in the Day of Judgment! (Matthew 25:21)

12

4:1); this is the only way that the Ministry can function. When people fail to support their Ministry, the Ministry will fail.

But God did not leave us without a guide; that guide is found within Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, commonly referred to as the Bible! All Churches and individuals would do well to compare their actions and lifestyles against Matthew 25 and Ephesians 4, as these are the two of the best examples for determining if one is on the right track. This comparison is something that I do often as I continue to grapple with the challenge of leading First Union. MINISTRY UPDATE The Church is unlike any other organization on earth. The challenges are unique, and resolutions to those challenges can be very elusive. God does not ‘force’ anyone to do anything; instead He says “whosoever will” (Revelation 22:17). This is the same practice that the Pastor must align with in the Church, ”leading” people, not “driving” them. This means that the Pastor can only ‘ask’ people for their participation in the Church; whether they comply or not is up to them. The Pastor cannot personally run every Ministry of the Church, which is why it is so important that all Ministry Leaders and Ministry members do their jobs (Ephesians

Volume 11; Issue 1 | ALL IN THE FAMILY

An unfortunate but undeniable fact about ‘Church’ (not just First Union but any Church) is that only about 30% of the people do 70% of the work; and the other 70% of the people only do 30% of the work. In case you don’t understand percentages, consider it like this. Why do the same people always come forward whenever there is something to be done around the Church? Because they are the faithful few that are willing to serve in any capacity whenever they are called upon; while so many others always have ’reasons’ why they can’t do things. Of course everyone in the Congregation has equal opportunity to assist with whatever needs to be done at the Church, but who are the ones that always stay behind to clean up after a dinner? Who are the ones that show up for Church Clean-up Day? Who are the ones that consistently attend The Lord’s Supper Service? Who are the ones that attend Sunday School? Who are the ones that attend Bible Class? Who are the ones that come forward when a committee is need? They are called by two names: (1) The 30% - or – (2) The Faithful Few!

When it comes to the Ministry work at First Union, I firmly believe in everyone having an opportunity to be active in a Ministry that they feel that God has called them in to. This is what Paul was talking about in Ephesians Chapter 4. God doesn’t want you to come to Church every Sunday to just sit and keep a pew warm.

www.all-inthe-family.com

No matter how big or small, God has got something for each one of us to do; THIS is how the Body of Christ functions, with many members not having the same task, but each performing their own function. Therefore, I am calling upon every Member of the First Union to please take time and prayer to re-evaluate your personal commitment to God as it relates to what Ministries you serve. First Union is only as healthy as the will of the Congregation. Over the course of the past nine years we have revived some Ministries and created some new. Most of which are still intact and active, but we have had some go the way of the dinosaur, and we’ve got a few that are on life-support. One of the most troubling to me personally is our Nursery and Children’s Church! No, there’s nothing wrong with the children, but it’s the adults! (as usual). If you have a sincere desire to work with children in this capacity, we could certainly use your help! Women outnumber men in the Church by a ratio of 4:1, and this statistic holds true when it comes to the boys also. We’ve made several attempts to gather our boys in an effort to guide them and instruct them, but the best of intentions continue to slowly fade away. Boys are tough, and without the cooperation of the parents, it’s nearly impossible. There are men in the Church with a passion to work with our boys, but they can’t do it alone. It takes the assistance of everyone in the Congregation to make this, or any other Ministry be effective. Most other Ministries are holding their own, and with good leadership and discipleship, these Ministries can continue to flourish and grow. However, there is one Ministry that EVERYONE can be a part of, and you don’t have to signup or hold an office! It is one of THE most important Ministries in

www.all-inthe-family.com

the Church, and it definitely needs your support - and that is the Sunday School.

I honestly believe if people really understood and experienced the benefits of Sunday School, this ministry would grow exponentially! Won’t you consider at least trying it out? (Psalm 34:8) I often say that the only people at First Union that aren’t doing anything are those that don’t want to do anything! God continues to press my heart to provide ample opportunity for the Congregation to work on our Kingdom Building efforts, and not just sit on the sideline and watch the work pass us by. We currently have 25 active Ministries at First Union, and I am positive that one of them is just your size!

shows up on any given Sunday.

But the God that I serve is an EVERY SUNDAY God! He is just as good every Sunday of the month! In fact, He is just as good every single day of my life! If you have a god that only allows you to come to Church on certain Sundays, and required you to stay home on certain Sundays… please come and allow me to introduce you to my God! He only has me going to Church on my FAVORITE Sunday! Soon the Congregation will see some revisions in how we take members into the Church; this is all in an effort to increase retention rates, and will have additional significant benefits. It is always my prayer that every member would embrace new members and help to make them feel at home in their new family. I am also continuing to ask Rev. Pope and the After-Care Ministry to enhance their retention efforts as well.

First Union By The Numbers

While we are talking numbers, let us consider some other numbers! Yeah, you know, the numbers that are on those green pieces of paper!

One of my personal passions for a long time has been to stop the revolving door – people join the Church one Sunday and then you never see them again. Member retention has been on my heart for years and I am constantly looking for ways to stabilize and increase our growth. Thus far this year, our average Sunday attendance is about 145; this is consistent with previous years. But how does this compare when we consider the fact that we currently have over 250 souls on the ‘active’ Membership Log. This means that only about 2/3 of the Congregation

I’ve long said, giving is not a condition of the wallet, but rather it is a condition of the heart. I’ve learned over the years that people give according to how much they trust in God. The Bible is littered with Scripture that teach us things like God will give to us according to how we give to Him, and God reciprocates blessings when giving is done from the heart. (Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:7). Jesus Himself said that we cannot serve God and ‘money’, for we will love one and hate the other (Matthew 6:24).

Volume 11; Issue 1 | ALL IN THE FAMILY

13

We have set some financial goals that we are working towards, and the load is certainly a lot easier to bear when more people get on board. Thus far God has provided First Union with enough people with sincere hearts that we have been able to grow financially, and accomplish many great things to enhance the Church in many ways. But there is still much to be done, and when we consider what we’ve been able to accomplish with the few, it’s incredible to imagine how much more we could accomplish if significantly more people would catch the… ‘giving vision’! Phase – II In case you hadn’t noticed, we were recently able to complete Phase-2 of the Sanctuary lighting project. This was probably the most significant phase of the entire lighting project. The lights over the pulpit and the choir stand have been revised.

The revision of these light fixtures not only provide better lighting at the front of the Sanctuary, but it also gives us significant control over the lights. Both the choir stand and the pulpit can now have the lights turned on and off independent of the main sanctuary. This is most useful when entering the sanctuary in the dark, it is no longer necessary to traverse through the darkness to the rear of the sanctuary to try and find the light switches. (Our knees appreciate it also!) Another exciting element of these lighting modifications is the fact that the lighting can now be used to enhance the worship experiences for various services, such as the Lord’s Supper Service and Watch Nite. The flexibility and

14

opportunities that these lights present are far and wide! But please note that this is Phase-2 of three phases. The third and final phase of the sanctuary lighting revision will involve the installation of light coves along the walls down each side of the sanctuary. The remaining 1’ x 4’ fluorescent light fixtures will be removed, and a wood cove will be installed at the ceiling level. The wood of the light cove will match the wood trim around the windows; the light fixtures themselves will be concealed LEDs. When turned on, the light will wash the ceiling, giving an indirect ambient effect. We will pursue this final phase when finances permit. Movie Stars?

ord the morning worship services, but it will also allow us to Live Stream the service via our website, as well as Facebook live. Now don’t go and get no ideas! We’ve not trying to keep you at home looking at a screen, we still want you to be “present” during worship service (Hebrews 10:25). But we want to offer theses remote services for the sick, shut-in, those that are traveling, and even some who live in other cities. What we will “NOT” be doing with the projection systems is making ‘movie stars’! No, we will not be zooming in our people while singing, praying, worshiping, etc. This system is not intended to be a distraction from Worship Service, it is intended to be an ’enhancement’. We will still be able to offer DVD’s of any Service that is recorded.

If you’ve looked ‘up’ in the front of the Sanctuary recently, then you’ve notice two projectors hanging down from the ceiling. These projectors are our newest additions to our AV System. In addition to the two projectors, we’ve also added two cameras. I can’t begin to tell you all the great opportunities this new system presents!

The primary goal with the projection system is for it to be a worship aid for things like projecting Hymn lyrics, Sermon aids (short video clips, images, Scriptures, etc.); projecting of Praise Dancers, and Drama; just to name a few of the things that we will now be able to do.

Something a bit more subtle that I’m sure very few have noticed, are some upgrades to the Safety Systems in the Church. We have added more Security Cameras around the Church which allow us to see completely around the exterior of the building as well as key areas of the interior. Unfortunately, this is the world that we live in today, and such measures are necessary if we are going to remain wise and vigilant. Please know that the intention with the security cameras is to look out for the best interest of the Congregation in taking proactive measures to try and keep people safe at First Union.

In the near future, not only will this system to be used to rec-

Cross, and trade it one day for a Crown!

Another subtle safety item that you haven’t noticed are all of the next EXIT lights and EMERGENCY lights. These safety measures are important in the unlikely event of a fire, or even during a power loss. The Exit lights illuminate the way out of the building, and the Emergency lights illuminate a safe path in the event of a power failure. We cherish the Cross, not as an idol, but as a reminder of the most significant event that has ever taken place in the history of mankind! For First Union, it’s been a long time coming, but now, after more than 20 years, that space over the Baptizing Pool that has been begging for a Cross, and now that appetite has finally been satisfied! Without the Cross, we would have and we would be nothing! Without the Cross, all of our singing, all of our teaching, all of our praying, all of our preaching would be in vain! The cross is the reminder that while we were yet sinners, Christ died (Romans 5:8). Without the Cross, there would be no redemption from sins, and therefore no salvation. So from now forward, every time you enter the House of God at First Union, may the cross be the constant reminder of the suffering and shame that Christ endured for our sins. And may we cherish the old rugged

www.all-inthe-family.com

Speaking of entering the House of God at First Union, have you noticed it yet? Did you see our slightly refurbished sign out front! Have you noticed how bright and brilliant it is at night time? It looks pretty good in the daytime also!

It’s a true saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression; and seeing the condition of our front sign would not make a good impression on those seeking a House of Worship! It would have been nice to get one of those nice new LED signs that everyone is getting these days; but you can’t buy a Cadillac on a Chevy budget! But for now, the Chevy that we have looks pretty good, and we’ll continue to take care of it until the Lord sees fit to give us that Cadillac! OPERATION: Education

After more than 35 years in the construction industry, I believe I am well qualified to tell you that there is much more to building than just sticking a shovel in the ground – especially these days! There are reviews, approvals, permits, calculations, design, architecture, engineering, SWFWMD, and so much more! This all takes time! But I want you to know that the process is moving forward, not nearly as quickly as I’d like, but it is moving. We are currently in the

process of providing the City of Tampa with a ‘Master Plan’. This allows them to look at our intentions for many years down the road. And if you have been paying attention, then you know that our visional goal is to eventually own the entire city block of Chelsea to Genesee, and 37th to Thonotosassa. There is an agency commonly referred to as SWFWMD (South West Florida Water Management District), and they are the Government Agency that regulates storm water run off. We are required by law to contain all rain water that falls on our properties. Well, over the years First Union has purchased many properties and that storm water must be managed. Further considerations include the electrical service, the size of the water line that enters the building, how much parking,

how much impervious parking verse pervious, and we haven’t even stuck a shovel in the ground! I am working with the Architect and various agencies to overcome all the necessary requirements; and when the time is right, I have a golden shovel that I am just waiting to stick in the dirt on the day of our ground breaking! (Really! No kidding! I “DO” have a golden shovel) But the real question is… will YOU be ready when that time comes? As I am working through all of the afore mentioned hurdles (and more); are YOU doing YOUR part to assist with this incredible project? How you ask? By passing by the Offering Table each and every Sunday morning!

Volume 11; Issue 1 | ALL IN THE FAMILY

15

Our plan for giving is Tithes + $20 offering. Are you doing this consistently? And then what about a Pledge above and beyond? This is how YOU can help to make the vision become a reality! There is so much that this building addition will do for First Union, but it can do nothing as long as it is not built; and it cannot be built if the members of First Union do not support the vision. First Union Ministries

Have you heard? Did you know that First Union had a ‘baby’? That’s right, on March 20, 2017 First Union Missionary Baptist Church gave birth to “First Union Ministries” – an ecclesiastical (soon to be) 501©3 entity. Once all of the paperwork has been completed and is in place, First Union Ministries will slowly begin to increase and begin serving. Some of the ministry work that First Union Ministries will be doing includes: Food Pantry, Clothing Pantry, After School Programs for children, Employment Assistance, Day Care, School, and Elder Housing; just to name a few. The birth of First Union Ministries presents many additional opportunities for the Congregation to serve in Ministry. As you pray about your place in the future of First Union Church, please keep in mind that First Union Ministries needs you as well.

All input God has given your Pastor an incredible vision for First Union, and I’m continually trying to find ways to cast the vision and make it clear for the Congregation to see. Over the past 8.5 years we’ve seen much progression as God is slowly but surely allowing the vision to come to fruition. It is incumbent upon me, as Pastor, to do a better job in conveying to the Congregation what it is the Lord has in store for First Union, if the Congregation is willing to follow the vision by following leadership. God does not force His will upon anyone; He only asks that we trust Him in faith, regardless of what we can or cannot see. God has promised great blessings if we are obedient. Personally, I am crazy enough to believe that God will do exactly what He said; and I’m trying to convey that same message to the Congregation; and that message is, if we just do what God commands, there is no limit to what we can realize. First Union may not be a large Church when it comes to the numbers, but numbers don’t make the Church successful; only God can determine the success or failure of any Church. Our job is simply to be faithful over which He has made us steward, regardless of how large or how small we consider it to be. So, just what is the State of the Church? Well, I can tell you this – We’re not what we should be; but we’re better than we used to be; and getting better every day! I Remain In “HIS” Service….

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER!!!

ABE DRISDOM, JR.

AJ, we are so very proud of you as we celebrate your achievement in

graduating high school. It seems like only yesterday you were running around the playground and swinging from the monkey bars. Right before our very eyes you have grown into a fine young man. You have worked very hard to make it to this day. Remember, however, that the journey does not end here. Continue to strive for your dreams both educational and with your love for the game of baseball. Remain humble always; putting God first in all that you do. You are a wonderful example of what a young man can accomplish with Christ, determination, and the love of your family. We love you so very much! Love Mom, Dad, Bri, and Gen. Continuing Faith! by Rev. B.E. Garmon, Sr., M.Div.

If you’ve been around First Union for any length of time, then you know that we’ve been talking about ‘faith’. If you’ve been attending Bible Class on a regular basis, then you know that we’ve been talking about faith for the past 18 months. Some many even wonder when will we be moving to a new topic? But that is exactly what ‘faith’ is all about, enduring, lasting, continuing. Notice that those last three words all end in ‘ing’, which means ‘ongoing’; this is equivalent to the ‘eth’ and the ‘th’ suffixes in the King James Bible. In most cases of Scripture, the suffixes of ‘eth’ and ‘th’ denote the word to be continuing. Let us consider the example of John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Notice that the word “believeth” contains the aforenoted “th” on the end, making it clear to us that a person cannot simply say they believe in Jesus, but this level of faith is a ‘continuing faith’. If we expect to receive the promised everlasting life, then our faith in Christ must be ongoing, and not just one time or occasional. Faith is not something that you do one time, master it, and then walk away victorious! But faith is something that you must ‘practice’ on a daily basis. Faith can be an emotional rollercoaster ride with peaks and valleys, but regardless of the highs and lows, God wants our faith to be continuing. Throughout Scripture we are frequently admonished that we must continue, endure, and remain; even Jesus Himself spoke of this on many occasions: Matthew 24:13 - But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. James 5:11 - Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job,

www.all-inthe-family.com

have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. Revelation 2:10 - Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. One of the biggest challenges that any Pastor has is encouraging people to remain faithful to their calling in the Church. The most popular defense mechanism that the devil has equipped people with these days is a mind to quit! When turbulence comes (as it will in all positions), people are convinced that quitting their position is the way to resolve the issue. When this happens, the devil is pleased that the Lord is displeased. Jesus already told us that in this world we are going to have troubles (John 16:33), and trouble doesn’t stop at the doorstep of the Church, it certainly finds its way inside (1 Peter 4:17). But God is smart! And He “KNEW” that we would be facing all of these challenges, outside and INSIDE the Church! But His commands to us when we face these troubles was not to throw up our hands and walk away, but rather He admonishes us over and over to remain faithful, and in the end “HE” would give us our reward! (Matthew 25:21).

If Christians really understood the essential nature of faith, I honestly believe that our Churches would be more vibrant, and people wouldn’t be so quick to walk away at the first sign trouble (Hebrews 11:6). That is exactly the devil plan, to make as many people quit on God as he can! Every time someone loses faith and walks away, the devil shouts another victory! I, for one, don’t plan on giving the devil anymore victories. Therefore, at First Union, it is my plan to faithfully continue to teach, preach, and talk about… “Continuing Faith”!

I Remain In “HIS” Service...

Congratulations on seeing your dream come to fruition. From fifteen women to over one hundred in just seven short years is definitely an accomplishment. How did you do it? Shadez of Hue has been successful because of continued support from a lot great women in my life. The tea has grown through word of mouth, social media, my family, and support from a few First Union members, particularly the ladies of Faith in Motion. On your website you state that "Shadez of Hue hosts an annual tea for women to discuss current issues that include health, education, financial stability, and women of the Bible." Do you consider Shadez of Hue to be an organization with a religious base? Are all women from all walks of life welcome?

Shadez of Hue... providing spiritual and educational direction and enrichment in the lives of women

Shadez of Hue is definitely religious based. Every year, a woman of the Bible is selected to be the main topic of discussion and the theme is centered on that woman’s life. I feel that as a woman, it is important that I, as well as other women, understand the important role we play in the Bible and in the Church. Although I do believe that God has placed man at the head of the Church and family, women are, or should be, the backbone and support system for men. We also have great influence in their lives! It is important to be a virtuous woman. You also state on your website that the Vision for Shadez of Hue is to provide pathways for women to reach 'selfactualization'. What exactly does that mean? Self-actualization is basically reaching your potential in every aspect of your life. We often find that we excel in one area, but lack in another or we just don’t nurture ALL of our talents, especially women. Because we are mothers, wives, grandmothers, aunts, mentors, etc. and we are the caregivers for so many people in our lives we often forget about ourselves. We forget to take care of US. Shadez of Hue reminds women that although we are the backbone of the family we must still remember to take time to replenish our own spirits. Although we sometimes have to do things in phases, we can still do it! If you want to start a business, do it! If you want to go back to school, do it! It is easy to lose ourselves while caring for others. How did you come up with the name Shadez of Hue? As an African-American woman, I naturally have an affinity for women of color. Shadez of Hue 2 utilized a photograph that showcased the various shades of women of

26

Volume 11; Issue 1 | ALL IN THE FAMILY

www.all-inthe-family.com

color entitled 'The Color of Beauty'. I instantly fell in love with this photo and I am amazed at just how beautiful black women are. It is my desire that we all realize how gifted, talented, and stunning we are and thus the name Shadez of Hue was born. I added the ‘Z” for a bit of pizzazz! ☺ But to be clear, I must emphasize that Shadez of Hue is for ALL women. We may not all be the same hue, but we are all women and have many common needs. What was the inspiration for your organization? Honestly, the first tea was an idea for a simple social gathering. An occasion for women to dress up, wear hats, be cute, and have lunch. However, before the tea, I started to have visions of a formal forum with speakers addressing various topics that should be discussed to enhance women’s lives (education, finances, health, etc.). Ultimately, I decided that we also needed to add a woman of the Bible to create the spiritual base for the event. Shadez of Hue is a non-profit, right? Can you explain to our readers what a non-profit is? Basically, Shadez of Hue is an organization that provides charitable contributions to the community. The organization does not gain any profit from its efforts and is able to operate from contributions of individuals and other businesses and organizations. The organization appreciates all contributions received thus far and is always looking to develop relationships with other potential contributors that would like to join our efforts in improving the lives of women, promoting education, and feeding the spirit.

Shadez of Hue... Religion-based non-profit organization that provides charitable contributions to the community.

How long does it usually take to prepare for the Tea? What goes into bringing all the parts together? Honestly, it varies. Some years I haven’t had a theme until one month before the tea. The most difficult part is coming up with a theme that captures the essence of what I want the participants to remember. However, Shadez of Hue 2017 ("Don't Look Back") came to me well before 2016 was over. The theme is always centered around my personal experiences and the end of 2016 was definitely a difficult time for me. The beginning of 2017 also started off very rocky, but I was able to successfully complete my doctorate, continue to succeed with the tea, and have continued to make connections and build relationships to help build and grow Shadez of Hue, Inc. Although it has been hard, the experience has also been very uplifting because in spite of everything, I MADE IT!..and I DID NOT LOOK BACK.

Once the theme is created, I must secure speakers for the event, solicit sponsorships, create the program, market the event, sell tickets, and select a venue. There is a lot of footwork involved, but I enjoy doing it all. Now that Shadez of Hue has grown, I am definitely seeking out a committed team to assist me with future endeavors. Back to your website. You say that "Shadez of Hue Inc., will continue to reach as many women as possible and provide support, scholarships, and enrichment opportunities for the growth and development of the mind, body, and spirit." Just how will you accomplish this? What sort of scholarships will your organization be giving? I hope to be able to provide academic scholarships in the very near future for young women wishing to pursue higher education. I would also like to sponsor a few college tours and other educational trips for students. The first major project that I would like to start by this coming Fall is weekend workshops to teach students how to apply for financial aid, complete college applications, research different colleges and the requirements that must be met to enter those schools. We have so many talented and smart kids that get left behind because they don’t have the support system to pursue college or they just don’t know how to get the forms and applications completed. I would also love to partner with a male community leader to begin some type of program following the “Shadez of Hue” prototype format for young men. I think this is something that is much needed in the community for our boys and as the mother of two young men, I find it difficult to find a good quality program and mentors for them. Your Mission Statement is "To provide spiritual and educational direction and enrichment in the lives of women so as to encourage and promote excellence in all endeavors". Is this the basis for your speakers; those who are in the field to provide these directions? Absolutely. Many of the speakers are ministry leaders and provide the spiritual aspect of Shadez of Hue’s mission. We have also had speakers from the health industry, financial advisers, and educational leaders as well. Shadez of Hue also partners with other non-profits and organizations that are like-minded to increase our efforts to reach as many women as possible. I see that there were quite a few younger 'ladies' in attendance, so is this forum for females of all ages? Do you purposefully design it to include them? Yes, absolutely. I actually want more younger ladies to attend. I am looking to partner with other organizations geared toward the empowerment and uplifting of young ladies so that we can start to mold and guide them early on. I only wish I had more sponsors to help with the cost of getting the young women involved, but I believe that God will provide that for Shadez of Hue, Inc. as we continue to grow and network.

Also, I know you just completed Tea #7 a few minutes ago, but do you have any ideas in mind for #8? (inquiring minds wan to know â˜ş) Hmmm...I really don't have any idea for Shadez of Hue 8 at this time. I am sure God has quite a bit in store for me. We have to be careful what we ask for. I know that to whom much is given, much is required, but I am prepared to keep moving forward and accept His plan for my life. Whatever the theme will be, it will surely be a testament to my 2017 journey! What other activities is your organization involved in before and after the Tea? Shadez of Hue, Inc. is still in infancy and is looking to expand activities throughout the year. Now that I have completed my doctoral studies, I hope to become more involved with the youth at First Union and throughout the community. I am looking to expand my outreach to continue mentoring and empowering women.

Editor: Ms. Jones, we sincerely thank you for your time to share your journey with us. Although you have just hosted your 7th Tea, we know that you have only just begun. We pray God's blessings on your journey. We know you will continue to 'run on' and watch as God takes your dream to heights even you can't imagine.

My mother wanted us to be her wings to fly as she never quite had the courage to do. I love her for that, I really love the fact that she wanted to give birth to all six children. 12 wings live. 4 other ones; one set for our brother who got his wings early and the last is for the lady, the friend, the wife, the teacher, the cook, and someone you can talk to. Love enough for everyone and open arms, too. Everyone she talks to loves her. I could go on and on and never stop. With her beauty and color, she is beautiful through and through. You see she got her wings, too. That's my mother. Today and everyday is Mother's Day to you, for the special things you do, that brings your family happiness and love all year through.
