My Process During my three years at the State University of New York at Fredonia I have been on their division III men’s cross country and track team. I put on my shoes everyday and go for a run. I have seen things on my run that you would never noticed if you were just driving by in a car. When I was assigned to make an app for an adventure that I went on; I thought to myself that I go on an adventure every time I run.
I did some further research into hamburger layouts and found out that they aren’t user friendly. I read an article written by Luis Abreu called, “Why and How to Avoid Hamburger Layouts.” This article mentioned that bottom icon navigation feature similar to Twitter’s navigation was the best layout. This layout is easier for the user to navigate and doesn’t hide any information at any time, making app discoveries easier on the user. Which made me have to redesign the app to make it more user friendly.
My app acts as two things for the user, an exorcise track as well as a navigation tool for your everyday runner. When I first started this app I wanted to use the hamburger layout. This layout is based on three lines contained in a square; this button is called the “hamburger.” When you press on the hamburger the page changes and brings out hidden features not seen.
I think the greatest challenge for this app was figuring out the correct point size for copy in the app. When you look at a screen you think that the type for a screen should be a small point size because the screen is small. That is the exact opposite. It is even harder to read type when it is used in small point sizes. To help the reader veiw type on the screen I wanted to use a typeface that was easily legible on screen.
Mathew Carter designed a typeface called Verdana, which is a san serif made to be read on screen. I feel that using this typeface instead of a san serif such as Helvetica or Futura will help the legibility of small type on my app.

My Journeys Pt.1 For the past three years at the State University of New York at Fredonia I have been on their division III men’s cross country and track team. Everyday I go on a run for three miles or more for my training. On these runs I take various looks to unfamiliar places to a regular student. When you’re running on the road you seem to catch things that you wouldn’t notice whizzing by in your car. For example there is an eleven-mile run that takes you to a military base with tanks and artillery trucks.
