It sure has been an exciting year in the cattle industry!
Record prices across the board have made for some good profits and optimism in the business. It is encouraging to have young people excited to be part of their ranches and finding their places in the business.
Around here feed stocks were quite good and we had a good grass year. We know that, in a lot of areas, the weather has been quite unpredictable and that easy fleshing, adapted, trouble free cattle are going to be more and more valuable. We feel our breeding program is geared to that and our brand of maternal based Red and Black Angus cattle will be an integral part of the future profits of our Customers.
We had an exciting 2024 highlighted with our best Bull Sale ever and a very successful Red Roundup Female Sale.
now, but we look forward to all three of the kids being back home for the Sale.
Dave and Gail are pretty much fully retired now, but Dad certainly checks out every catalog that comes in the mail and loves talking about the cattle.
if you would like their opinion on the cattle.
Mark Shologan and the DLMS crew will be here broadcasting the sale online and the details to sign up for that platform will be posted later in the catalog. Videos of the sale bulls will be available for viewing at Cattlevids.ca a couple of weeks before the sale, and we encourage everyone to check them out.
In June Reese and Ryder graduated from High School and spent the summer going to junior cattle shows. They both made us proud by winning multiple scholarships and then headed off to college in August. Ryder has followed in our footsteps and is attending Olds College for a business course. Reese is attending Redlands Community College in Oklahoma taking an Agricultural Education course and is on their nationally ranked livestock judging team. Thomas is currently the Sports Director at CITL television in Lloydminster and is a Director on the Canadian Junior Angus Board. He is heading to the World Angus Forum in Australia in late April to be one of 8 Young Angus Breeders representing Canada in the World Angus Youth Competition. The nest is empty right
Our Goal has always been to raise cattle that work in a real world environment and positively affect our customer’s bottomline. It is a long game that requires some serious discipline, and is probably never going to make the breeder rich quickly. The commitment it takes to raise cattle without crutches like creep feed, foot trimming is expensive but our commitment to ruthless culling has made our cowherd better and we believe we raise better bulls because of it. I am sure we could get a higher percentage of bulls in the sale if we weren't so hard on them and their dams, but we would only be hurting you, our customers, by doing so. Raising cattle like this hasn’t always been cool or exciting, but we have been doing it for 52 years, raised some good ones, and served hundreds of customers that we are certainly proud of.
Once again this year we will be working with Optimal Bovines Inc., OBI, as sales consultants for our sale. Mark Holowaychuk and his crew are great promoters of the Angus Breed throughout North America and can be trusted to give their thorough and honest appraisal of the bulls on offer.
Robert Lind will once again be our auctioneer; you won’t find many farmers and ranchers in this area that Robert doesn’t know. Dory Gerard and Bryon Wolters will be here taking bids and both are outstanding cattlemen as well. Don’t hesitate to give them a call
We are always available to show you the bulls prior to the sale at the farm, or we can go through the bulls beforehand on the phone. We have a sight unseen program where we can either bid on bulls on your behalf or use any of our capable sales staff. Our number one goal is to get the right bulls into the right situations. The bulls will all be semen tested prior to the sale and all bulls in the sale will have passed that test. We don’t sell deferred bulls, and we cull them pretty hard, so subsequently we deal with very few sale credits in the sale. We know cows don’t get bred by ‘sorries’, so we do our level best to mitigate potential problems before they leave Towaw. Having said that, unforeseen things can happen, and we keep spare bulls should problems arise. Please let us know of problems while we can still fix them; we know we can help you better than the guys at the coffee shop!
Please come early on Sale Day, have lunch with us, and plan to stay after the sale for some hospitality and a good visit. After a long winter it is great to catch up and see all of our Customers and Friends on Sale Day.
Sincerely,
• Buy 3 - 4 bulls - 5% discount on each bull
• Buy 5 or more bulls - 7.5% discount on each bull
We will deliver bulls free of charge within 200km of the sale site. Delivery will be at cost after 200km. A rebate of $100.00 per bull will be offered to buyers who bring their trailer and truck their bulls home themselves within one week of sale day. Bulls may be kept at Towaw, free of charge, until April 15, 2025. If bulls are left longer a fee of $4.00 per day will be charged. Bulls are left entirely at the risk of the purchaser and we recommend that insurance be taken.
We are selling some bulls in this sale as 2/3 interest and full possession. The 2/3 interest part means that the seller wishes to retain a 1/3 interest in the bull entitling him to use the bull through artificial insemination and sharing in any future drawing expenses and revenue of semen on a 1/3 basis. Full possession entitles the new owner to all physical rights to the bull. As in any other information, announcements from the block take precedence over any written information in the catalog.
EPDS: EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES
EPDs are a powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. EPDs incorporate the performance of the individual, along with the performance of all its relatives.
CE: Calving ease - higher number predicts more calving ease.
BW: Birth. A lower EPD predicts lower birthweights.
WW: Weaning. A higher EPD predicts higher weaning weights.
YW: Yearling. Higher yearling EPDs indicate greater expected yearling weights.
MILK: Milk EPD should be used to predict the milking ability of the daughters of the bulls in question. Higher milk EPDs project more milk.
REA: Rib Eye Area in sq. in. Describes difference in rib eye size.
MARB: Marbling. Describes marbling potential of calves expressed as difference in grade score.
FAT: Fat thickness in inches. Predicts difference in fat measured at the 12th rib.
CW: Carcass weight in lbs. Predicts differences in hot carcass weight of progeny.
Percentile Tables have been added to take some of the confusion out of the EPDs. A trait listed as 5% would mean that bull is in the top 5% of the breed for that trait. 49% would be slightly higher than breed average, while 51% would be slightly lower than breed average.
TERMS: Unless otherwise previously arranged with Towaw Cattle Co., terms of this sale are cash or cheque, payable in Canadian funds. As soon as an animal is sold it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the stand at sale time, and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.
DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.
CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer by the seller for each REGISTERED animal after settlement has been made.
DELIVERY: We will arrange delivery of the bulls to central points in western Canada and closest U.S. Port of Entry. Delivery within 200km is free of charge, outside of 200km will be at cost.
CURRENT WEIGHTS AND SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS WILL BE AVAILABLE SALE DAY
AOD: The actual age of the dam when she calved the bull offered for sale.
CE: Calving Ease, U =Unassisted
BW: Actual weight at birth
WW: Weaning weight in lbs. Adjusted to 205 days.
WI: Weaning Index - Weaning weight as a % of average WW of contemporaries.
YW: Yearling weight in lbs. - calculated as adjusted 205 day weight + (ADG on feed x 165 days)
YI: Yearling Index - Weight gain from Weaning to Yearling as a % of average gain of contemporaries.
NOTE: All Indexes are calculated within the herd.

ALL SIGHT UNSEEN SALES ARE MADE WITH A SATISFACTION GUARANTEE.
Towaw Cattle Co. guarantees to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, and a bull that has passed a semen test conducted by a licensed veterinarian.
In short, we guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. If he hasn’t passed a semen test, he doesn’t sell.
Should any animal fail to be a satisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the bull in question, as a credit towards the purchase of another bull. Warrior continues to be the Main herdsire in our winter and summer programs. Purchased as a 3 Year Old, we were able to see progeny at Wildman Livestock and the same quality we saw in his calves there has continued at Towaw. His dam was a past Farmfair Champion Female as a two year old and she traces back to the Stocky cow family that is renowned for production and longevity. He is a trouble free sire that is masuline and full of muscle. His first daughters calved here last summer and are an impressive group with good udders. Look for the Warrior cattle to be easy fleshing, early maturing, muscular and maternal.

Jentry 4J is a Black Hided Red Gene Carrier and is a new sire in volume for this year's sale. We own him with Ter-Ron Farms and they use him for breeding in the spring; we get him in August for the Summer calving herd. We had one A.I. son in last year's sale and he was our High Selling Yearling at $15,000 to Heart of the Valley Farms. Jentry is a moderate framed, easy fleshing, masculine bull with a great head. He has an outcross pedigree being a grandson of the black Scheiffelbein Attractive bull. Attractive's most famous son would be the Scheiffelbein Showman sire that did such a great job at Hamilton Farms. Look for the Gentry sons to be stout, big bodied, masculine, structurally correct and good hearted. Whether you want to add pounds or retain females, the Jentry sons should fit the bill.

He was an $18,000 purchase earlier that spring from the U2 program. He has bred for us in two breeding seasons and always maintained his fleshiness. He has always been a low birthweight, calving ease bull that sires early maturing growth and moderate nature size. He is now a herdsire at Acadia Colony Farming Co. near Oyen. RED U-2 RECKONING 149A

He is a larger framed version of our Kingman line; still easy fleshing, big testicled and deep, but with more power. He is sired by a bull that Hamco bought in our sale that Kirk gave a perfect foot score to; a feat only achieved once since we have been scoring feet.

We have been excited about Montgomery since he was a calf. He is big bodied, big boned and has had that herd sire look from early on. He stands on a good dark foot and possesses large testicles. His CAA Elite/Premier dam was flushed last spring producing 33 and 21 eggs in two conventional flushes. She is an easy fleshing tank of a cow with a very good udder. Sybil 417D was the first animal to carry Reese's tattoo and her first calf, Sybil 407F, was the high selling yearling heifer in the 2019 Red Round Up sale to Jack and Shannon Trask of Rafter SJ Red Angus. She swept her divisions in the three major shows that fall. Reese has many daughters of Sybil in her herd. We are super excited about the Sybil and Jentry combination and would like to utilze him in our herd. If your requirement for a herdbull is a great cow, you better get to Sangudo and check this guy out!

Rushmore is a muscular, masculine, powerhouse of a herdsire prospect with impressive character and eye appeal. His dam is correct, feminine and wedge shaped with a near perfect udder. Both 411G and her dam were in our embryo transplant program in 2024. A full sister to her dam was a donor cow in Kansas for Wildcat Creek and produced until she was 17 years old. Her pedigree is stacked with the maternal giants like Indeed, Jive, Julian, Tiger and multiple shots of CC Expansion 5E. Pairing our two best cow families, the Lakimas and Sybils, we couldn't imagine a better maternal pedigree than Lakima 411G. We think you could mile out a new pick up truck looking for a more impressive front pasture type cow. Rushmore is sired by the total Argentine bred Calidad 130Y who adds power, bone and easy fleshiness to the mix. We went back to using Calidad to get more daughters back in the program as they have been so good.

Honcho is a true calving ease champion, arriving in this world in a hurry on a very cold night. From the looks of it the birthweight is fairly predictable, as his mother repeated the 61 pound birth weight with her calf this year. He is a moderate framed, good hearted, stylish calf and did really well on feed; only outperformed in that category by the other Captain son, Lot #4. His dam was purchased in the 50th Anniversary Red Roundup Sale from Six Mile Ranch. Reese and Ryder pooled their money with Calynn and Hiller Gardner with the goal of buying a top female worthy of a partnership. Reese showed her on behalf of the group and she was a champion or reserve in her division through the summer shows and was the Grand Champion Red Angus Female at Stockade Roundup in Lloydminster. She was excited to exhibit her in the Supreme Shows at Farmfair and Agribition. RED

Dark red, outcross bull here with lots of performance and a moderate 87 pound BW. He is strong hearted, level topped and explosive in his middle third, this herdbull checks all the boxes. Definitely a different pedigree for most Red Angus Breeders as his sire, dam, and maternal grand sire are all black.
First and foremost, we take the responsibility of being a seedstock and genetics provider very seriously. The decisions we make, and the policies and tendencies we use to make breeding decisions have an exponential impact on our customer’s bottom line. In a commercial setting a cow must have a marketable calf every year, all while doing it without incurring extra labour, feed, or health costs. The difference between a top end cow and an average cow might be an extra $100 in profit at the end of the year. Unfortunately, in the purebred world, some traits that make cattle worth more are not really aligned with the commercial world. Extra feed to make a calf weigh more at weaning and yearling time is exponentially
rewarded in a purebred setting. Same goes with extra feed to prop up a cows milking ability or her ability to breed back.
Keeping an open cow around for an extra year is ludicrous to a commercial herd but often happens in a purebred setting if that cow has cranked out a $20,000 bull. So, even though cattle that need to be culled might not affect our bottom line as much as it does a commercial breeder, we must cull our cattle ruthlessly to avoid passing on future economic problems to our customers. We sell a lower percentage of bulls born here than a lot of outfits, not because of the quality of the cowherd but because we refuse to make any excuses for the cattle
or prop them up with uneconomic feed and practices. We do our best with the young cattle but every year there are some that hit the cowherd and then need to be culled. We go through our cows every spring and a group ends up being bred to terminal bulls and culled from the purebred herd.
Those male calves, while still purebreds, on those cows are all castrated, no matter how good they might look. The heifers are also marketed as commercial. We also believe in our customers taking advantage of hybrid vigor when they use our purebred, registered bulls on their crossbred cows. You won’t see half blood bulls sold from our program.

At its core, line breeding is the planned breeding of related animals in a population with the goal of making them more prepotent or likely to transmit hereditary characteristics to their offspring. With simple traits like the polled gene or colour genes, there is only a pair of genes involved so it is quite simple to be homozygous for a gene and therefore be guaranteed of passing that gene to their offspring. For complex traits like correct feet, udders, body condition etc., many genes are involved and things get complicated. For this reason we try to breed like traits in animals from cattle that are related so that they are more likely to be “homozygous” for those traits and be more prepotent in passing them on to their offspring.
Line breeding was used to great success
in the first half of the 20th Century and helped to establish some of the best lines of predictable genetics in many of the breeds. So why did it fall out of favour? All populations of breeds carry harmful recessive, non dominant, genes known as genetic defects. When cattle are homozygous for these defects they are mostly born as non viable animals and eliminate themselves from the gene pool. If they only carry one copy of the gene, however, it stays hidden and the animal shows no ill effects of having said gene. When you have related animals, the likelihood of these genetic defects becoming homozygous is heightened.
Up until the last 20 years or so the only way to “prove” a sire was defect free was to breed him to a number of his own daughters and hope there were not any calves displaying
the homozygous traits of the defect, say dwarfism. Now we can DNA test suspected animals and have pretty much eliminated known genetic defects from the registered gene pool, as most of the Associations now flag defect carriers in pedigrees and make testing readily available.
On a side note that is another darn good reason to use registered bulls! We are using more of our own bulls and utilizing line breeding as a tool to make our genetics more prepotent and predictable. We are not into producing Outliers and Unicorns here, but predictable genetics that are more likely to pass on to their calves and make your calf crop more uniform and your replacement heifers more likely to last for many years in your cowherds.
The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization, gut health and as a result quality sperm production. Nutritional status of a bull, particularly from the previous 60-days can affect the semen quality being ejaculated today. Sperm production is a continuous process and proper nutrition is critical to maintain peak fertility and longevity of bulls. Bull calves are generally developed on grass with their mom’s on a quality mineral program.
Once bull calves are weaned, they are slowly moved onto a balanced TMR. The bulls are challenged with a forage-based TMR to help them develop and express their genetic potential. This is important for consistency of maturation and puberty of bull calves. Sampling and analyzing
forages are important for properly balancing the overall ration. Forage quality and digestibility are important for maximizing ruminal health. Matching suitable protein sources with proper starch with the available forage sources is key to promoting lean muscle growth.
The addition of organic minerals are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health of bulls. All of these factors contribute to semen quality and conception within a herd.
If you have any questions about the nutrition program, please feel free to reach out. Buy with confidence knowing the bulls have been developed on a balanced nutrition program.
Best of luck on sale day!
