DESIGN WORKS FOR US$ 204MN MIXEDUSE RESIDENTIAL AND RETAIL COMMUNITY UNDERWAY AT JUBAIL ISLAND

J

ubail Island Investment Company (JIIC) today confirmed that its flagship project – the AED5 billion Jubail Island, is on track for ahead-of-schedule delivery, with the master planning and architectural services for the mixed-use (commercial, retail and residential) Town Centre, awarded to DLR Group and well underway. The mixed-use part of the development, estimated at AED750 million (USD 204mn), is a corner stone to create a balanced community addressing the needs of residents and nearby communities. The built-up area of for the Town Centre is one million square feet. The scope of the works covers the design for the Town Centre area that includes a range of apartments of varying sizes to meet different user needs, retail establishments, office park with separate office buildings sized between 700 and 1,000 sqm, and the support facilities needed to sustain a dynamic community. The development seamlessly integrates with the site’s adjacent low-density residential neighbourhoods that intertwine within natural surroundings that feature untouched mangroves forests and unique local fauna.

Poised to become Jubail Island’s main commercial and cosmopolitan hub, the Town Centre will include facilities such as a community centre, F&B and retail outlets, a family entertainment centre, a worship centre, a clinic, a supermarket, a business centre, and nurseries; with generous parking to accommodate increased vehicle turnout expected during various functions that will be planned throughout the year. In addition, the Towne Centre will be connected by a short walk through a landscaped pedestrian spine to a beach club surrounded by upscale and trendy kiosks. Speaking on the project update, Mounir Haidar, Managing Director of JIIC, said: “We are delighted to spearhead the timely development of this highly soughtafter low-density development community in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi. Nestled between stunning mangrove habitats and offering panoramic coastal views, Jubail Island is well ahead of schedule at this stage in delivering quality homes, serviced plots, and best-in-class amenities to include a marina complex, sports centre, beach club, and all necessary amenities to a community that loves living in harmony with nature while also enjoying the luxurious offerings this development provides.”

He added: “Today, we are proud to team up with the renowned architectural firm, DLR Group to provide our future residents and visitors a creatively-designed one-of-a-kind community hub. Housing the development’s commercial and community-focused offerings, the Town Centre will bring people together with its diverse network of open spaces to live, work and play” Since the launch of Jubail Island in April 2019, JIIC has awarded contracts valued at over AED 400 million. Most works are well underway, including a new highway interchange to the development on Sheikh Khalifa Highway (E-12), enabling and marine works for Phase 1, and infrastructure works to construct internal roads, electricity, water, sewage, irrigation, telecom and gas networks for several residential villages. For his part, Jamal Salem, DLR Group Middle East Region Director, said: “DLR Group is honoured to partner with LEAD/ JIIC to create a distinctive design for ‘Jubail Island’ based on human connections within the neighbourhoods and Town Centre. By blending built architecture with the natural landscape, the project creates a unique experience and an oasis for visitors, bringing together both the community and commercial enterprises from family entertainment, shopping and hospitality, to religious facilities, recreation and multi-family living, all with a nature-focused lifestyle intended to elevate the human experience.”

DAMAC PROPERTIES REPORTS REVENUE OF AED3.7BN IN FIRST NINE MONTHS OF 2020

D

AMAC Properties Dubai Co. PJSC announced financial results for the first nine months of 2020. Total revenue stood at AED 3.7 billion vs AED 2.8 billion in 9M 2019. Booked sales for the period stood at AED 1.6 billion vs AED 2.4 billion for the similar period last year. Net loss for the period was AED 931 million (9M 2019: Profit of AED133 million). Gross profits for the period stood at AED 828 million (9M 2019: AED 838 million). Gross profit margin declined to 22.7% vs 30.3% last year. Total assets stood at AED 21.8 billion compared to

AED 23.8 billion as of 31 December 2019. The global outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns and travel restrictions adversely impacted performance and profitability. Profit continues to be adversely impacted due to provisions created in light of prevalent market conditions. As of 30 September 2020, Gross debt stood at AED 3.3 billion, Cash and bank balances stood at AED 4.6 billion and Development properties stood at AED 8.5 billion. Shareholders’ equity stood at AED 13.1 billion as at 30 September 2020. The Company also saw gross debt reduction

by AED 0.5 billion during 9M 2020. DAMAC delivered c. 1,870 in first nine months of the year in AKOYA and Business Bay developments. During the year, DAMAC also reached the milestone of crossing 30,000 unit deliveries since inception. Hussain Sajwani, Chairman of DAMAC Properties, said, “We continue to endure the effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic, which negatively impacted the real estate industry. With social distancing becoming the norm, travel restrictions and a major dip in tourism, the market has been significantly impacted.” “Covid-19 has upset the balance sheets for many companies, which industry leaders have been very vocal and transparent about and while many analysts are forecasting a U-shaped recovery, we believe it may be some time before we see an upward recovery.” “DAMAC’s strong balance sheet has allowed it to absorb much of the market shock and we are optimistic that Dubai Expo next year will reap positive rewards for the real estate industry as sales and transactions will increase, offsetting the dip in the market due to Covid-19.” “In the meantime, we are persevering and recording important progress as we focus on deliveries and continue construction projects. Through hard work and a forward-thinking management team, we are continuously striving to operate more efficiently, by cutting our receivables, optimising operational costs and focusing on cash collections.” “I am grateful for the wisdom and decisive action taken by UAE leaders to effectively manage the Covid-19 situation in the country. Through social distancing, mask mandates and great access to healthcare, our country has positioned itself on the fast track to recovery. Meanwhile, our leaders stay focused on improving business and innovation, which is one of the many reasons why the UAE remains resilient in face of global challenges.” “We also thank all our stakeholders who have worked for our success over the years, including our employees, partners, contractors, suppliers and of course customers who have all contributed in the success of the company.” WWW.CBNME.COM

D3 ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL 2020 EXPLORES CULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN GCC REGION

D

ubai Design District (d3) today hosted a talk titled ‘Emerging Cultural Infrastructure in the Gulf’ as part of the d3 Architecture Festival 2020, organised in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Gulf Chapter. Moderated by Khawla Al Hashimi, Director of Project Development at the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), the panel discussion explored contemporary cultural infrastructure and its relation with the heritage and built environment in the GCC. Participants included Sumaya Dabbagh, Principal and Founder of Dabbagh Architects, Paolo Rossi, Associate Director of Architecture at Pace, Wael Al Awar, Principal Architect and Founding Partner at waiwai, and Islam El Mashtooly, Design Director at Croquis. The panellists defined cultural infrastructure as culturally rooted and contextdriven projects that preserve the memory of a place. They agreed that context goes beyond tangible elements, and is crucial to incorporate humanist design in real estate development. Sumaya Dabbagh said: “Every place has a story, and architecture should build on that story without erasing the memory of the place. The modernisation of Middle Eastern cities, such as Dubai and Riyadh, has prompted a search for identity, and I am encouraged by the move towards delivering meaningful architecture that can add to the community.” Islam El Mashtooly highlighted the significance of mosques that transcend their religious role to serve as real urban living rooms. On another note, he used India as a prime example of a country with a deep understanding of cultural localism in architecture. Wael Al Awar said: “Culture is always tied to context – location, people, nation – which is key in addressing every architectural project. The UAE did a fantastic job to bring the right architects in order to keep its identity. It used Japanese architects, who are tied to their identity, unlike Western architects, who have blindly adopted the modern style.”

To illustrate the importance of getting clients on board, he recounted the story of his firm designing Al Warqa’a Mosque in Dubai that involved a 1.5-year conversation with Dubai Municipality about the meaning of identity in architecture, which opened the way to other architects having more progressive dialogues on mosque design. Al Awar added that he looks forward to breaking stereotypes about the UAE as a desert country at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021, where the theme of wetlands will feature prominently in the national pavilion. For his part, Paolo Rossi said: “A muse-

um is a medium between mankind and its culture. It’s not an object, it’s not a place – the new trend for museums is to be part of the exhibition. The power of an idea is more important than object or form.” The inaugural edition of the d3 Architecture Festival runs from 11 to 13 November 2020 under the theme ‘Identity, Context and Placemaking in the Gulf’. Celebrating the achievements of local and regional architecture companies, the event takes place during Dubai Design Week, held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.

PROJECT

“This significant landmark underscores the scale of our project and the remarkable progress made to create the destination of the future.”

SIGNIFICANT LANDMARK TRSDC celebrates milestone moment as USD 2bn worth of contracts are signed to date

T

he Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), the developer behind Saudi Arabia’s flagship international regenerative tourism initiative The Red Sea Project, today announced it had awarded to date more than 500 contracts to international and local firms. Collectively worth around SAR 7.5 billion ($2bn), these include awards for the design, build and operation of stateof-the-art accommodation and

facilities at the destination. “This significant landmark underscores the scale of our project and the remarkable progress made to create the destination of the future. TRSDC is a contributing factor to the growth of the Saudi Arabian economy and is playing a pivotal role in its Vision 2030 plan. I am honoured to be able to showcase the incredible advances our brilliant team and partners have achieved towards making our vision a reality,” said John Pagano, CEO of TRSDC.

16 | CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS NEWS ME | DECEMBER 2020

BREAKING NEW GROUND

Since the company’s inception in 2017, over 70 percent of the total value of contracts has been awarded to Saudi firms, highlighting TRSDC’s commitment to strengthening the local economy. Overall, more than 500 contracts have been awarded to companies from 24 countries, which is indicative of the scale of the project and the international expertise required to create the unique destination. Work on the destination’s transport links is well under-

way and includes developing 80km of roads, highways and junctions to connect the destination, and the new international airport. Archirodon is constructing a crossing linking Shurayrah Island (the destination’s main hub) to the mainland and is constructing a number of jetties. Meanwhile, Saudi Amana Contracting has delivered the first volumetric prefabricated units, which were built in a newly established facility in Saudi Arabia. These units will form part of the Coastal Village development, a new town set to house the 14,000 staff who will operate the destination once complete. The development of the Construction Village, which will be home to 10,000 construction workers, is nearing completion with all 1,876 cabins built offsite, delivered and assembled. WWW.CBNME.COM

TRSDC CELEBRATES MILESTONE MOMENT

While the onsite landscape nursery, which spans over one million square meters, is fully operational and set to deliver upwards of 15 million plants. In July this year, TRSDC signed its largest contract to date for airside infrastructure works for the destination’s international airport, set to open in 2022. Awarded as a joint venture to two leading Saudi contractors, Nesma & Partners Contracting Co. Ltd and Almabani General Contractors, the contract symbolizes another significant step in progress, while demonstrating TRSDC’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities within the Saudi Arabian construction sector. In addition to working with international and local companies, TRSDC has also forged partnerships with universities and ministries, as well as leading scientific and academic institutions. For instance, the company worked with King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) on an ambitious Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) program to map out land and coral reef conservation areas at the site. This exercise informed the Concept Master Plan which predicts a 30 percent net conservation benefit by 2040, showcasing TRSDC’s commitment to setting new standards in regenerative sustainability.

SUSTAINABLE IS NOT ENOUGH

TRSDC is a standard-bearer in luxury ecotourism, with the goal of becoming the first global destination to demonstrate a regenerative tourism approach on this scale.

The Red Sea Development Company base camp

TRSDC is a standard-bearer in luxury ecotourism, with the goal of becoming the first global destination to demonstrate a regenerative tourism approach on this scale.

TRSDC is working to establish the largest marine protected area in the Middle East, which will be just under 5,400 square kilometers. TRSDC also plans to implement a number of innovative methods to sequester carbon, including increasing the size of mangrove habitats across the destination, direct air capture and establishing marine algae farms. In addition to manufacturing off-site, TRSDC uses eco-friendly, sustainable ‘green’ concrete on-site in order to minimize emissions throughout the construction process.

“All of our world-class partners are carefully selected and are truly aligned to our sustainability and business principles. One of the things that makes The Red Sea Development Company so special is our unwavering commitment to regenerative sustainability. Taking just a sustainable approach isn’t enough. We want to enhance the destination for generations to come,” Mr. Pagano added.

A LOOK AHEAD

And there is still more to come. By the end of 2020, many more contracts will be awarded including for the airport terminal, an airport operator, and a major public-private partnership (PPP) utilities package that will secure 100 percent renewable energy generation, water desalination, waste treatment and district cooling. Together, these contracts will take aggregate commitments to a total approaching SAR 15 billion ($4 billion). The Red Sea Project has already passed significant milestones and work is on track to welcome the first guests by the end of 2022, when the international airport and the first four hotels will open. The remaining 12 hotels scheduled for completion in Phase One will open in 2023, delivering a total of 3,000 rooms across five islands and two inland resorts.

TECHNOLOGY

Prabhu Ramachandran, Founder & CEO at Facilio

HARNESSING IOT

How industry players are harnessing IoT to advance connected building environments BY PRABHU RAMACHANDRAN,

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has revealed several operational gaps in the management of buildings and the way building are reactively operated today. As things stand, remote working and social distancing will stay in effect for the foreseeable future and the size of deployable teams will continue to be a challenge. These limitations are likely to make our post-pandemic future an opportune time for the industry to adopt centralized remote monitoring and control of systems, in even greater numbers than before. Building owners and operators are repositioning their portfolios through cost savings and newly identified efficiencies, while also addressing improvements in tenant experience. As buildings reopen in the midst of the

pandemic and an economic crisis, owners are expected to focus on operational decisions that enhance occupant safety and reduce the carbon footprint of their assets. CREs are increasingly seeking real-time access to operational data, to help them optimize their operations, in line with meeting aggressive energy savings targets, improved building performance, and substantially reducing maintenance hours. For instance, in HVAC operations, which account for nearly 40% of all carbon emissions and about 30% of total energy consumption in commercial buildings, an IoT-enabled, unified and connected operational environment can help them gain complete real-time visibility, as well as agile control of space and equipment, to meet fast-evolving demands.

18 | CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS NEWS ME | DECEMBER 2020

IOT-LED CONNECTED OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS Previously siloed and decentralized building operations are now increasingly being brought under unified and centralized command and control, using IoT platform and cloud-enabled O&M applications. One example of this transition is the strategic collaboration announced between Facilio, an AIdriven operations and maintenance platform for real estate portfolios, and Belimo, a global giant in the development, production, and sales of HVAC devices. The move reflects an evolution in approach from a leading hardware provider for commercial real estate, in order to adapt to the changing expectations of stakeholders in the industry. A connected operational environment, such as the one enabled by this collaboration, can turn IoT data into real-time operational insights and workflows, to optimize building performance and comfort in realtime. The idea is to enhance existing operational frameworks, by adding ‘smart’ capabilities to existing automation assets. This approach to incorporating next generation technologies is fast becoming a trend, with traditionally hardware-centric industry players announcing strategic partnerships and new product offerings, with a focus on software-led property operations. Concurrently, a shift to open protocol software tech has also been gathering steam, as CREs look to seamless, simple, connected and flexible model of operations, systems and processes. The real estate industry has been transforming at a rapid rate over the past 5 years, with greater emphasis on driving seamless occupant experiences, as well as enhanced operational efficiencies. Some benefits of an IoT-led operational foundation and solutions include: > Remote Asset Performance & Optimization: Remote monitoring and control of multiple building assets, through a “single-pane-of-glass” to optimize HVAC performance and energy efficiency in real time. > Sustainability Management: RealWWW.CBNME.COM

time energy consumption analytics, measurement and verification, performance benchmarking, digitized electronic content management, reporting, and more. > Automated Maintenance: Automated and real-time contextual workflows; preventive, condition-based, and predictive maintenance across the portfolio > Seamless Tenant & Occupant Experiences: Apps to help tenants, owners, and facility managers work remotely and access data, initiate tenant service requests, and visitor and vendor management.

SUSTAINABILITY AND THE EXPERIENCE ECONOMY The main value proposition, of an embedded device intelligence and integrated software solution, lies in its ability to intelligently gather performance data and make it available for insights that translate into addressing the priorities of contemporary customers – concurrently addressing enhanced comfort and climate change goals. The real estate industry is engaged in creating sustainable buildings and contributing to ESG goals, through digital transformation and industry

collaborations. Building owners and facility managers will greatly benefit from access to a single holistic view of operations, which the next generation of IoT and software driven solutions provide. But what makes a connected operational environment most attractive for building owners, is the ability to deliver superior occupant experiences. Increased programmability allows seamless addition of new devices and sensors, for better services. And remote cloud-based control of building systems delivers responsive ambient comfort, for tenants. In essence, IoT-enabled connected building operations correlate to a safe, sustainable, and efficient built environment. In today’s experience economy, where value-based proactive services take precedence, data-driven real estate operatives can now differentiate themselves from the competition, and truly stand apart.

K&A’s deep commitment to health and safety leadership has been evidenced by achieving: 10 million man-hours without LTI at Emaar The Address Residence, Dubai, and Qatar University Student Affairs Building; 13.5 million man-hours without LTI at Al Zahia Mall, Sharjah; Zero LTI in Oman since January 2015; and an appreciation letter for HSE excellence and project delivery from NEOM client, KSA.

INTERVIEW

HEALTH & SAFETY VISION In Conversation with Sutharson Sathaiah, Senior Manager of HSE & Risk at Global Village CAN YOU TELL US HOW GLOBAL VILLAGE COMBATTED THE CHALLENGE OF COVID-19? Combatting the challenges of COVID-19 was a fundamental and central element of our preparations ahead of reopening. Events that transpired this year were unprecedented, requiring a massive collective effort from an ecosystem of internal and external partners. First and foremost, we worked alongside organisations at both local and international levels, engaging in dialogue at every available opportunity with industry experts and other authorities. These included the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), British Safety Council, and of course our own Governmental departments. Furthermore, we partnered with SHEILDme, a leading producer and supplier of sanitisation products and are using their 100% natural products to sanitise our park. Following the conclusion of Season 24, we comprehensively assessed all areas across the park to ensure customer comfort and safety under “new normal conditions. Our teams and partners worked tirelessly to overcome pandemic-related challenges and to ensure that new normal policies and best practices were successfully implemented across every area of the park.

WHAT HSE IMPLEMENTATIONS WERE INTRODUCED BY GLOBAL VILLAGE? The re-opening of Global Village, as well as the success of our Silver Jubilee Season, were both dependent on successfully implementing a host of new HSE practices and subsequently ensuring that their effectiveness is maintained. Digital transformation has played a key role in our COVID-19 response. We have implemented contactless payment solutions through the brand new Global Village App and website for online ticket purchase and parking payment, whilst the new GV Pay by noqodi, e-wallet allows contactless payment across all Global Village outlets for guests who prefer to avoid using cash. Cleaning schedules have been significantly increased and disinfection protocols for all touchpoints are in place. Masks and social distancing is mandatory and guests are encouraged to regularly use the more than 600 hand sanitiser stations that have been installed across Global Village. Staff at all restaurants and kiosks must wear gloves and change them regularly. And thermal screening has been implemented at all entry points for both staff and guests. We are an entertainment

destination, so a lot of thought was also put into how we implemented the various precautionary measures. Teddy Bears at the Kids Theatre and Falcons at the Arabian Square serve to ensure social distancing in seated areas. Fun themed masks have been distributed to kids since opening. A new Street food area, Fiesta Street, was implemented to avoid crowding in Kiosk Street. Seating has been placed in front of the Main Stage. Every effort has been made to ensure that each precautionary measure is designed to protect and improve our guest experience.

TELL US WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS FOR 2021? First and foremost, our Silver Jubilee anniversary is running for 25 weeks in total up until April 18, 2021. Despite the challenges leading up to our October launch, the story so far has been a successful one. As such, we are expecting to continue to deliver exceptional cultural experiences for our many guests between January and April. We have plenty of events and entertainment in store throughout this period, and we expect higher numbers of guests as we continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of our HSE protocols. Global Village has set a new WWW.CBNME.COM

benchmark for travel, tourism, and leisure destinations at the regional and international level in terms of cleaning and hygiene practices. We are already recognised for our safety record and have officially become the first Theme Park worldwide to win the “Sword of Honour” from the British Safety Council for our high standards of safety management. Furthermore, we also received the Dubai Assured Stamp from Dubai Municipality, Dubai Economy and Dubai Tourism (DTCM) in light of our stringent preparations for opening. We will undoubtedly be building on the many improvements we have made to our guest experience over the coming months and years. HOW WILL EXPO 2020 DUBAI BOOST GLOBAL VILLAGE? We are very proud to have worked over the past months to support the Expo

teams and will continue to do so. Expo 2020 Dubai will bring many tourists to the country and we will undoubtedly welcome many of them through our gates. Global Village is delighted to have been able to support the “open for business” message by showing how to successfully and safely operate a major leisure destination and we hope that this will go a long way to support the efforts of the nation in alignment with the strategic directives of the United Arab Emirates’ leadership and the Dubai Tourism Strategy. IN TERMS OF THE MARKET, WHAT INDICATORS ARE THERE TO SEE AN INCREASE IN BUSINESS FOR GLOBAL VILLAGE? From a Global Village perspective, the early success of Season 25, the positive response and reception from the wider community, and the interest we are witnessing on a daily basis are

all promising signs. Global Village has always attracted businesses from around the world and has enjoyed an extremely diverse customer base. With the travel and tourism sector in terms of visitors from outside the UAE also showing encouraging signs, are very optimistic about the remainder of the season and the success of our partners. DO YOU BELIEVE BY 2021 THAT PEOPLE IN UAE WOULD BE COMFORTABLE TO GO OUT IN BIG NUMBERS TO GO TO PLACES LIKE GLOBAL VILLAGE? We are confident that outdoor destinations that are vigilant about safety measures will continue to attract guests. For our part, we will work alongside our many partners to ensure that we apply the highest possible HSE standards. By upholding this commitment, we will retain the trust of our partners and guests throughout the months to come.

A

world that is increasingly worried about the atmosphere that is fast-saturated by greenhouse gases emitted by anthropogenic activities is looking for every possible means to slow down the trajectory of a warming planet. The role of carbon-absorbing forests especially tropical rainforests in regulating climate has never been more important. Once again, protecting the remaining forested areas which lie in the territories of developing countries regained international attention and is thrust into the forefront of the battle to reverse the planetary emergency.

Forest land accounts for about 31 per cent of the world’s land surface area (4.06bil ha) with the largest proportion (45%), in the tropical domain. And of this, the oldest biome located close to the equator and found within the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn – the tropical rainforests of Amazon, the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia – are touted to be the game-changing carbon sinks of the world. Forest-related emissions due to land use change and unsustainable logging practices contribute about one fifth of all global emissions. Therefore, protecting these remaining sinks would give humankind the fighting chance to reverse the course of runaway climate change.

58 | CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS NEWS ME | DECEMBER 2020

Their importance gained substantial tractions as countries of the world intensify negotiations to enhance international cooperation to combat climate change following the implementation of the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol (2008-2012) in which developed countries would reduce 5% of their emissions from 1990 levels. The role of forests as both emission sources and carbon reservoirs was acknowledged and addressed, namely with the mechanism known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in developing countries (REDD-plus) adopted in 2007 at the 13th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bali, Indonesia. It has to be pointed out that the pluses referring to the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks are significantly important for many developing countries where deforestation rates are relatively small. This means that such countries would be compensated for WWW.CBNME.COM

GLOBAL CLIMATE BATTLE | MALAYSIA TO SHOWCASE THE ROLE OF ITS FOREST

having kept their forests as the lungs of the world, hence REDD-plus would be an effective policy approach to prevent deforestation. DECADES OF DISINFORMATION Contrary to the disinformation surrounding Malaysia’s so-called high deforestation rate, one indisputable fact stands out. To date, more than 50% of the country’s landmass is still blanketed by forests after 63 years of post-independence nationbuilding. How did a country that relied heavily on its primary resources, an economic activity carried over from the colonial period, is able to maintain so much of its forest areas amidst population growth and meeting demands for more infrastructure and pressure to extract more timber? The answer lies in the appreciation and farsighted vision of the country’s leadership towards sustainable development.

AS A MEMBER OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY AND A SIGNATORY TO THE UNFCCC AND ITS SUPPLEMENTARY TREATIES - THE KYOTO PROTOCOL AND THE PARIS AGREEMENT MALAYSIA WILL PLAY ITS PART BY BUILDING ON THE RIO PLEDGE IN TERMS OF PROTECTING THE VITAL CARBON SINKS IN OUR TERRITORIES.

In many Malaysia’s official statements concerning sustainable development at international fora, the byname “Rio pledge’ is frequently referenced. It is linked to the bold pledge of maintaining at least 50 per cent (16.5mil ha) of our relatively small landmass as forest. The watershed year was 1992. The venue was Rio de Janeiro, a city in the southeastern region of Brazil on the Atlantic coast. Nearly 30 years ago, countries of the world got together at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro and agreed that environmental protection and development are not necessarily mutually exclusive. And developing countries must not be forced to give up their rights for a better standard of living in the name of environmental protection. Basically, everyone agrees that achieving sustainable development requires balancing the three pillars – economic, environmental and social – the vital aspects of modern days societies. As a member of the developing world, Malaysia was a vocal advocate for the rights to development, to industrialise, to eradicate poverty and to prosper. This legitimate desire to be a developed nation in the near future will inevitably mean some forested areas will have to give way for Malaysia’s economic transformation.

Nevertheless, through the years since Rio, Malaysia has adopted the world-renowned Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) practices and subjected its timber harvesting supply chain practices to thirdparty certification scheme. These efforts have minimized the negative impacts of timber harvesting in the production forests and protected its carbon stock. At the same time, management of specific ecological functions of forests were also enhanced through the establishment of totally protected areas as well as protective status for soil conservation and water catchment within the permanent reserve forests system. Soil protection not only preserves the fertility of soil and prevents runoff and sedimentation as part of flood mitigation, it also prevents the release of soil carbon. Impacts of climate change are not restricted by national borders and Malaysia fully appreciates the saying ‘No man is an island’. As a member of the global community and a signatory to the UNFCCC and its supplementary treaties - the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement - Malaysia will play its part by building on the Rio pledge in terms of protecting the vital carbon sinks in our territories. At Expo 2020, the achievements of the forestry sector will be the shining example of Malaysia’s theme “Energising Sustainability”. Depicting the country’s seriousness and commitment to climate change mitigation and forest conservation, Malaysia will present a rainforest canopy-inspired net zero carbon pavilion. We will take the opportunities to share our success stories as a forested nation and our approaches for sustainable development. More importantly, going forward, we seek to engage with other participating countries, businesses and the anticipated 25 million visitors in exploring new and innovative ideas and initiatives to assist Malaysia in its endeavour to continue to be the leading tropical country in conserving our forests for the shared prosperity of humankind. Malaysia’s participation at Expo 2020, scheduled for 1 Oct. 2021 to 31 March 2022, is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), with Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) as implementing agency.

Celebrating Excellence 54 years after launching the articulated hauler concept Volvo CE continues to lead the field

V

olvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) was the first to popularize the articulated hauler concept in 1966 with the birth of the 10-ton payload DR631 – fondly known as ‘Gravel Charlie’. Some 54 years later the company is still transporting earth, gravel and a host of other materials over rough, muddy, slippery, steep or otherwise impassable terrain. Volvo CE remains the market leader and continues to innovate with its H-Series range – which now includes its biggest ever production articulated hauler – the 60-ton capacity A60H. JUST LIKE THE REAL THING In a classic case of art reflecting reality, the LEGO® Technic™ 6X6 articulated hauler Volvo A60H model is also an impressive work of engineering. Inside

its giant box are 2,193 pieces, including six large tyres and heavy-duty motors. And just like the real thing, it is a technological tour-de-force, featuring app-controlled operation and a fully automatic transmission – a first for the LEGO Technic brand. The 55 tonne (60 ton) capacity A60H (the real one, that is) is designed for heavy hauling in severe off-road operations, including quarries, opencast mines and large earth-moving operations. And the engineers from both LEGO Technic and Volvo CE wanted the new model to reflect the quality, reliability and durability of the real thing. The model certainly is big – measuring 200mm (7in.) high, 200mm (7in.) wide and a vast 600mm (23in.) long. It is also packed with clever features, not least the complex internal gear system – which is fully automatic

and motorized – just like the real thing. The motors are well integrated and hidden under the hauler body and the cab – and the Bluetooth for the control hub is cleverly turned on by rotating the A60’s cab-top beacon. Much like all the electronic machine control systems on the real machine, the model’s Technic Control+ hub and the mobile phone application that goes with it control the model, allowing it to move forwards and backwards, steer side-to-side and elevate and lower the dumper’s hauler body. That’s not all, Control+ also extends the play value, by setting users a number of challenges that highlight features of the machine, such as moving uphill, going through the gears and tipping the load. The model takes its influence from the ground-breaking features and latest innovations on the A60H. With matched drivetrain, automatic drive combinations, including 100% differential locks, allterrain bogie, hydro-mechanical steering and active suspension, this machine is unbeatable. Fitted with an active hydraulic front suspension for higher hauling speeds in tough conditions, the A60H (the real one, again), optimizes operator comfort and stability during travel, allowing more material to be moved in a shorter time for unmatched productivity. CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE | VOLVO CE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE FIELD

Demolishing a building in the centre of Milan requires specific prerogatives. The work must be carried out with surgical care, without damaging the adjacent buildings and without disturbing the residents, in full compliance with environmental and safety regulations. NEW BOBCAT MINI-EXCAVATORS & LOADERS ON MILAN DEMOLITION Demolishing a building in the centre of Milan requires specific prerogatives. The work must be carried out with surgical care, without damaging the adjacent buildings and without disturbing the residents, in full compliance with environmental and safety regulations. This was certainly the case for the interior demolition in a prestigious fivestorey building in the heart of Milan. To carry out this delicate work, the contractor, Seli Manutenzioni Generali Srl of Monza, chose to purchase a fleet of five new Bobcat compact machines comprising two E17z mini-excavators, an E10z mini-excavator and two S70 skidsteer loaders. Thanks to their small dimensions and low weights, the three Bobcat miniexcavators, equipped with breakers and other attachments, easily dealt with the precision demolition of the floors and other structures to make way for new stairwells and lift shafts. One of the E17z mini-excavators was also used in the topdown mode to demolish the roof to create new floor levels for the building. The two S70 skid-steer loaders were used to complete the process by handling and removing debris, unloading it into self-tipping bins, which in turn were moved with a crane. The five compact Bobcat machines involved in the work inside the building were able to work comfortably even in the tightest spaces, where bulkier machines would not have been able to manoeuvre properly.

manager with proven experience in each sector. The most recently formed Business Unit is Demolition/Excavation, which has recruited several engineers and Ivano Perego as Sales Manager. Since October 2019, this division has been winning important contracts, particularly in Milan and its province. For Seli, the brand of choice for the machines to carry out this important demolition work is Bobcat. “We chose to purchase Bobcat skid-steer loaders and mini-excavators as we consider them to be extremely high performing and reliable,” said Ivano Perego. “This allowed us to provide a guarantee to the customer that the job would be carried out with maximum efficiency and precision. Our operators are completely satisfied with the quality of Bobcat machines and attachments, in terms of their power, comfort and safety. We are very happy with the choice of Bobcat equipment and our relationship with the Bobcat dealer, DMO.”

In fact, Seli has recently signed an agreement with DMO – the Authorised Dealer for both Bobcat and Doosan for the regions of Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Lombardy (the provinces for Milan, Cremona, Mantua, Lodi, Pavia, Varese, Monza and Brianza) – as the company’s main supplier for the rental and sale of construction machinery. The negotiations with Seli were led by Gianmaria Lupis, DMO sales manager for Lombardy. “The strong partnership with Seli has led to a number of machinery orders, including the five Bobcat compact machines involved in this demolition work,” said Gianmaria Lupis. “Alongside DMO’s role in sales and rental, we also offer a full aftersales service, which proved to be a decisive factor in Seli’s choice of DMO as machinery supplier.”
