ConExpo-Con/AGG 2014: Not Your Father’s Trade Show Show Organizers, Exhibitors Go High Tech to Capture Your Attention By Giles Lambertson CEG CORRESPONDENT
The construction industry convention in March in Las Vegas will be heavy in every way: big budgets, giant machines, dense crowds, and huge expectations. Organizers of ConExpo-Con/AGG 2014 have a heritage of building and innovating on previous shows, and the 2014 gathering is expected to extend that record of success.
TV legend Ed Sullivan would have called it a “really big shooow,” but organizers of the 2014 exhibition go one bigger and call it comprehensive.
“People don’t realize the effort that goes into this,” said Rochelle Collazzo, assistant marketing manager of Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “Because ConExpo is the biggest, it is exponentially important. To put it together and coordinate everything is a lot of work.” TV legend Ed Sullivan would have called it a “really big shooow,” but organizers of the 2014 exhibition go one bigger and call it comprehensive. “If it’s new, it’s here” is how the event is billed, meaning that Expo visitors can expect to see all the new equipment models. While not every manufacturer will introduce a piece of machinery next year, fleet managers will find it worth their while to make the trip. “We certainly value ConExpo as a place all of our customers are going to go,” said David Lipari, marketing manager of Guntert & Zimmerman slipform paving equipment manufacturers. Even though G&Z will not roll out a new machine this time around, it has rented 3,600 sq. ft. at

the convention center to display its line of equipment. “Our customers are there anyway, so we need to be there.” The first of these exhibitions is traced back to a gathering in Chicago in 1925, though some suggest the earliest antecedent is a trade show in Cincinnati in 1909. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers produces the show and, in 1996, joined with the International Concrete and Aggregates Group to merge ConExpo and Con/AGG shows. In 2011, the International Fluid Power Exposition also was held in Las Vegas; some 120,000 registered attendees with interests ranging
20
The exhibition’s home has ranged through the years from McCormick Place in Chicago to the Astrodome in Houston. However, when it landed in the Las Vegas Convention Center in 1987, a special synergism quickly became evident between host city and show. The 1987 ConExpo was the largest convention the city had ever hosted up until that time, covering some 900,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space. By 2011, the ConExpoCon/AGG in Vegas boasted 2.34 million sq. ft. of show space.
Tech Heavy, Too New technology is being incorporated into the show presentation and at individual exhibits. The AEM and Association of Equipment Management Professionals have begun pushing smart use of telematics. They won’t employ that at the show — some manufacturers will — but AEM is working up a mobile navigation app for showgoers. With the app, visitors will be
able to use their smartphones to find their way to the areas and booths they especially want to visit. Terex Corp. has some new tech approaches this year, according to Aron Sweeney, marketing manager, including using radio frequency ID technology to track booth attendance and customer engagement. “We also are going to be heavily leveraging social media and marketing automation before the show and during the show, more so than we have in the past. The Genie team is planning some pretty cool interactive properties that will debut at The Rental Show this year.”
“We also are going to be heavily leveraging social media and marketing automation before the show and during the show, more so than we have in the past. Aron Sweeny Terex Corp.
Use of social media is expected to proliferate at the event, meaning Facebook and Twitter messages will fly from manufacturer representatives, and YouTube videos pop up on screens near you. Marketing people have concluded that Internetconnected apps with user-generated content are useful vehicles for events like ConExpo. Other electronic applications include the old reliables — video presentations and LED flat-screen messaging — but they are bigger and better this year. Dave Dennison, manager of marketing services at Bomag Americas, said that at the last ConExpo, the company had several videos playing, mostly on 19-in. screens. This year the videos will be displayed outside and inside the booth, and the largest screen will be 120 in. across.
Other Attention-Getters Not all the attractions will be on mobile screens. In fact, some manufacturers are leery of overdoing the smartphone stuff.
booth,” said Jenny Ellenbecker, tradeshow manager of Ellenbecker Communications, who represents Atlas Copco Dynapac. Ellenbecker has worked shows for Atlas Copco Construction Equipment for four years. “Touch screens, for instance, are fine, but customers still want to talk to someone and meet company representatives.” Added Ellenbecker: “We like technology that gives visitors a chance to experience the equipment in action.” To that end, the 240-ft.-long and 70-ft.-deep Atlas Copco Dynapac exhibit in March will have, besides lots of equipment, a drill simulator. Also, an overhead stationary sound system will dramatize Atlas Copco hydraulic breakers. “Guests who stand right under the system will actually get to compare what noise reduction sounds like, not just read the rating system from a product tag. We will have a lot of elements like that in a single display.” Volvo Construction Equipment will introduce a little competition among visitors, with individuals given the chance to operate a backhoe loader and an excavator. Prizes will be awarded the operators who perform certain tasks with the machines in the shortest time.
“At the end of the day, the only credibility we have to hang our hats on are visits that actually generate sales, even if the sales sometimes are years down the road.” Dave Dennison Bomag
“Over the years, we have learned to closely manage how much new exhibit technology we have in the
21
Over at the Hyundai Construction exhibit, an area will be reserved for live entertainment, a not uncommon lure to get bodies into a booth area. However, not every manufacturer believes in traffic for traffic’s sake. “You can give away a Harley Davidson and get quantities of visitors,” said Dave Dennison of Bomag. “If you bring in the Hooters girls, you can get numbers. We want to see credible buyers who take time out of their schedule
to evaluate our products. At the end of the day, the only credibility we have to hang our hats on are visits that actually generate sales, even if the sales sometimes are years down the road.”
An Effective Exhibit Evaluating the success of an exhibit at a huge convention like ConExpo can be tough. Measurable expectations that are met are easily chalked up — a requisite number of turnstile clicks, for example. But sales attributed to ConExpo six months after the show don’t always show up in the final report.
More seriously, Sweeney lays out a nuanced understanding of what comprises exhibition success. It is gauged by various metrics, he said — “equipment sales, booth attendance, customer engagement, lead generation and the engagement of the Terex team in the show. From a management standpoint, the success of the planning team is gauged by how smoothly the overall show goes, from the first hours of setting up the booth to the last machines being shipped out.” Rochelle Collazzo at Hyundai downplays sales and leans more toward creating
form of sales and contracts. A booth isn’t cheap, after all. A mini-survey of manufacturers indicates the expense of an exhibit for 2014 will range from a few hundred thousand dollars to several million dollars. With the exhibition coming as the industry still is recovering from five years of steadily declining employment and a general collapse in construction spending, not every manufacturer is ready to pull out the stops at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2014. There will be brands with multiple booths and lots of sq. ft. of show space, of course, but there also will be pullbacks by some companies and more modest expansions for others. The calculations that go into exhibition decisions are complex. For example, Volvo’s exhibit will take up more than 31,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor convention area, a space only slightly larger than in 2011. Hyundai Construction, on the other hand, will stake out an area of about 11,000 sq. ft., but that is more than double what it showed in 2011.
“I don’t think we gauge success on sales,” said David Lipari of Guntert & Zimmerman. “One of our pieces of equipment is a pretty hefty investment. We don’t expect to sell a lot of machines, though of course we always hope we will. We look more at the traffic and the quality of the leads we capture in the booth. We want to see concrete contractors coming into our booth.”
Or consider Bomag: That company’s show space in 2014 will be about 9,000 sq. ft., only about half of what it occupied in Vegas in 2011. Yet the company is pouring more money into booth elements this time, according to Dennison, and the number of products to be shown actually will be greater. How? Bomag went vertical: The exhibit will be on two levels to use the space more efficiently.
“There always are lessons to be learned.”
Asked how he determines if an exhibit is a success, Aron Sweeney of Terex has a chipper response: “The day after the show, we just know. It’s a marketing thing.”
Planning, Training
Exhibitions, expositions, trade shows — whatever the name, these Rochelle Collazzo public displays of construction Hyundai equipment are a regular part of marketing programs around the world. From the various Bauma internavolume of traffic and media coverage — tional trade fairs to ConExpo to regional exhibits, marketing executives spend lots “the buzz that it creates.” of money and time on the events. Success presumably is not measured Company involvement varies. events around the world. Bomag handles about one event a month, Guntert & Zimmerman one a year. Planning usually starts at least a year out. “For ConExpo, I will say we start at the two-year mark, but we start really planning a year out. At six months is when you roll up your sleeves,” said Hyundai’s Collazzo. And then an exhibition is over, and the lessons of the experience are sorted out. The lessons are many. “There always are lessons to be learned,” said Collazzo, Some of them are pretty straight-forward and practical — like always knowing what your neighbors are doing so you don’t schedule a demonstration that will have to compete with a demonstration happening next door. “You can never plan enough,” said Dennison. “Plan early. Always be sure to follow the rules and regulations put out by AEM and those managing the convention. And be patient. After all, a lot of people are trying to accomplish the same thing.” Preparations begin with training the staff, Sweeney said. “Terex is made up of five business segments, and as a show planning team we work very hard to ensure that all booth staff are aware of and can speak to all equipment in the booth. One of the biggest lessons we have learned from previous shows is to train, train, train our team members and booth staff.” Machinery isn’t the only thing on dis-

play for five days in March in Las Vegas. CEOs will be holding press conferences. AEM-sponsored seminar speakers and leaders will cover new technology and pressing industry issues and trends. Networking opportunities will abound. If it all sounds exhausting, the good news is that AEM producers of the event “guarantee” that visitors will do less walking this year than they did in 2011. There are the show apps, of course, to guide visitors through their phones. But a shuttle
Furthermore, the exhibits have been grouped into pavilions so a buyer of, say, skid steers can visit the many brands without crisscrossing the entire convention area. The same proximity planning will be noticed by concrete aggregate equipment customers, tracked crane customers and every other category of visitor. In other words, visitor convenience has been made a priority. “The goal, as with all our planning,” said Megan Tanel, ConExpo-Con/AGG show director, “is to create the most ROI for attendees and exhibitors.” That sounds like a big payoff for everyone. We’ve Got You Covered at ConExpo After a three year absence, ConExpo/Con-AGG returns to Las Vegas next March in what is expected to be a massive display of all the newest equipment, technology and products in the construction industry. As has been the case for decades, Construction Equipment Guide will be there to cover the entire event. This year, a new element has been introduced to CEG’s coverage: The Construction Equipment Guide ConExpo/Con-AGG Web site.
“We wanted as much as possible for users to feel like they were there on the floor at ConExpo 2014.” James Panarella CEG Web Editor
A separate section of CEG’s main Web site has been dedicated to featuring multiple aspects of the ConExpo/Con-AGG event. The Web site, located at http://www.constructionequipmentguide.com/pages/conexpo/, has been broken down into four main sections: News, Videos, Photos, and an extensive Archive Section.
Whether you are at the show and want further information on what you just saw, or can’t attend but want to keep up to date with the latest equipment and product news, this Web site can supply what you need.”
Up to the Minute Coverage
Video Coverage
Leading up to the March ConExpo/Con-AGG event, the Web site will feature the latest updates on the event and articles relating to exhibitor showcases. When the event kicks off on March 4, visitors to the page can expect up to the minute updates on events at the show, with news articles appearing instantly on the site.
CEG will have resources on the ground to capture footage of all the latest product unveilings. It’s one thing to read about the specs of a new excavator; it’s an entirely different thing to actually see it demoed for the first time in public. The video section of the ConExpo/Con-AGG page will be updated continually with product demos, raw footage from the floor of the show, and interviews with attendees and exhibitors.
“We wanted as much as possible for users to feel like they were there on the floor at ConExpo 2014,” said James Panarella, Web editor at Construction Equipment Guide. “We’ve levered our technology for this event to instantly update the site in real time.
Photos From the Floor Much like the news feed, the photo gallery will be updated with new items from the floor of the show regularly during the event. The gallery also will include archived images from past ConExpo events, tying into CEG’s extensive archival holdings. “We are really proud of the photo section,” said Panarella, “It really showcases our long history with this event, and allows viewers a window through the decades to remember the way things used to be in the industry.”
The Web site features the original articles from the print edition of CEG republished as they appeared in the pages of CEG. With references to equipment and technology from previous decades, readers can get a sense of how much has changed in the industry — and how much has remained solidly the same.

It is engineered for demanding applications and environments found in quarry and shotrock, coil handling, hot slag, steel mills and asphalt plants. Its 16-L Tier IVi Isuzu engine and smart “IntelliTech” system optimizes performance, according to the manufacturer. Powerful and Strong The 115Z7 wheel loader is a great choice for high-volume loadout requirements or heavy-duty shot-rock loading. Its big engine, massive drivetrain and powerful hydraulics mean its 8.3-cu.-yd. rock bucket can load 12.5 tons (11.3 t) in a pass. The full box-section rear chassis is super strong, and the center-pin area is the heaviest in this class. Dual Z Linkage provides great breakout force and excellent visibility to the bucket. It also spreads out the load on the torque tube to reduce stress. And when a new 115Z7 arrives on site, it’s ready to get down and dirty — it comes standard with full fenders, mud flaps and traction control.
There will be more than 130,000 people attending ConExpo.
KCMA Corporation will showcase an interactive cab of the 115Z7 wheel loader, which is an electric simulator of this machine.
Efficient and Smart But all that power and strength doesn’t mean big fuel bills, as the 115Z7 has great fuel economy. Many features like the power modes, efficient acceleration, IntelliDig, lock-up clutch, auto idle shutdown, and load-sensing open-center hydraulics make the 115Z7 outstanding in fuel economy and overall energy efficiency, according to the manufacturer. The Joy of Operation The 115Z7 is one of only two wheel loaders in this size class that offer standard joystick steering. The hydraulic-overhydraulic steering handles the machine well at any speed and the pilot-assisted hydraulic controls give the operator fingertip control. The result is lower operator fatigue and higher productivity. The standard rearview camera provides an extra dimension of safety for this big loader and supplements the standard exterior mirrors. The operator can make the 115Z7 fit his specific application through the LCD multi-function monitor in the dash — power levels, kickouts, declutch

function, and more — for maximum production. The standard traction control limits wheel spin, and the standard, AutoBrake protects the transmission from over-speeding and improper shifting. Simplified Maintenance Angled ladders and wide-access engine compartment doors help simplify service. The cooling fan is easy to get to as is the battery box. Lube points are grouped, and fluid check points and fueling are at ground level. Hydraulic oil change intervals are now 4000 hours when using non-zinc hydraulic fluid. Engine oil changes are 500 hours with CJ4 oil, and the loader linkage pins use an HN bushing that is oil-impregnated to allow for longer periods between lubrication. These pins can go as long as 500 hours between greasing in most applications. And standard telematics provide the customer, dealer, and Kawasaki with current operating status and alerts to improve support and reduce costs. Sakai Sakai America, now firmly entrenched in the North American construction industry, is once again raising the bar in the compaction market, following the theme they have set over the last several ConExpo seasons, according to the company. In 1999, the company introduced the world’s first line of 4000 vpm rollers, increasing the speed of the paving train while maintaining impacts per foot. In 2002, Sakai brought the world’s first track-driven vibratory soil compactor, climbing steep slopes like never before seen in compaction, according to the company. Now, the CV550 has been replaced by the SV510ST super traction, which has greater ability to climb steep inclines in either direction, but using smooth tires removing the maintenance burdens and indentations found in a track-driven machine. In 2005, The GW750 found its way to the show as the world’s first vibratory pneumatic tire roller, combining the benefits of a pneumatic roller with those of a vibratory allowing contractors greater flexibility as well as a powerful tool to meet tough specs, according to the company. In 2008, Sakai’s compaction information system was unveiled, raising the bar against competitors and advancing the way the industry looked at CIS. In 2011, the company introduced many new rollers and an advanced version of CIS.

In total, some 40 Terex machines will be on display on the 50,000 sq. ft. Gold Lot 1045. Many of these will remain under wraps until the show itself, and cranes are no exception. One crane that Terex is talking about is the Superlift 3800 crawler crane, which will be exhibited in an even larger configuration than at Bauma. According to Terex, the new Superlift has been designed to redefine performance in the 650 t capacity class and is a more than worthy successor to the highly regarded CC 2800-1. Requiring up to 30 percent less counterweight for long boom erection and complete with new-style cabin and Terex fall protection system, the Superlift has a maximum lift capacity of 650 ton (590 t) at 39 ft. (12 m) and a maximum hook height of 623 ft. (190 m). Maximum load moment is 9,288 ton (8,426 t). All the crane’s components weigh less than 40 ton (36 t) and are below 9.8 ft. (3 m) in width and height to facilitate ease of transportation. Rüdiger Zollondz, director product marketing, Terex Cranes said, “With its focus on innovation, capacity and productivity — and especially in the configuration we have planned — the Superlift 3800 promises to be one of the highlights of ConExpo 2014. It continues the well-established Terex tradition of helping customers to deliver the results that matter — jobs that are on time, on budget and to specification.”

Visitors to Lot 1045 wanting to see something brand new at ConExpo will not be disappointed. No less than three Terex cranes will be making their debut: a new, midsize all terrain crane, which specifically addresses the needs of the North American market; a new, class-defining truck mounted crane; and finally, a large rough terrain crane offering increased lift capacities. All cranes are designed with customer needs in mind. In addition to products, Terex will be focusing on service and support, and Terex Financial Services (TFS) will be on hand to provide expert help and advice. TFS will explain the wide range of finance and leasing options on offer and assist in all areas of asset management, from the analysis of future equipment values through to the disposal of used equipment. Roger Jones, director of product support and customer satisfaction, Terex Cranes said, “Our goal is to give our customers the confidence and reassurance they need wherever they are in the world. Confidence from knowing that their crane is being cared for by factory-trained professionals, and reassurance from knowing that Terex has the people and resources to deliver a complete package of after-sales support.” Terex team members from many countries will be available throughout the show to discuss and explain the 2014 product range. Terex also will be supporting the AEN “I make America” Initiative at ConExpo. Terex has been supporting this initiative for years and will offer a special contribution during the show.

Cormidi For years Cormidi has been developing, manufacturing and selling mini-dumpers, aerial platforms and tracked loaders. These have attracted worldwide attention for their performance, robustness, reliability and attractive design. To continue its policy of providing maximum customer satisfaction — based on prompt and efficient after sales service, quality and reliability of products — Cormidi now offers yet more innovative machines, according to the manufacturer. The new KB-X Performance platforms, with working heights ranging from 42.6 to 72 ft. (13 to 22 m), differ from the competition in many respects. First, they are aerial platforms, cranes and material handling unit in one package. Removing the personnel basket, the KB-X is transformed into a crane with lifting capacities of up to 1,764 lb. (800 kg). Without the lifting accessory, a hydraulic power take-off allows the connection of a wide variety of hydraulically powered attachments, including demolition breakers, a glazing panel handler or winch. The KBs also are innovative in their compact layout and overall design that breaks with the past, according to the manufacturer. Due to the particular geometry of the arm it is possible to achieve, for a given basket load, jibs of almost double capacity compared to others. What’s more, the presence of three points of articulation allows the KB to move almost like a human arm. It can do jobs such as going over the top of a house to the other side, or achieve a maximum horizontal reach of 37 ft. (11.3 m) and then rise vertically in a straight line up a wall to a height of 46 ft. (14 m). That is almost double that of traditional machines that can reach the maximum reach only from midheight and not working from ground level. The articulation also allows users to work below ground level, such as under bridges or places unreachable from standard machines. The KB-X also offers significant per-

(450 kg) at a height of 39 ft. (12 m) high and 16 ft. (5 m) outreach. At 29.5 ft. (9 m) outreach at ground level lifting capacity is 882 lb. (400 kg). Thus, moving a stack of bricks becomes a simple operation. All models are equipped with a special system with coded key that allows the selection of operating modes: air, air cranes and negative (under bridge). The electronic system is newly developed. In crane configuration, for example, the HSB (high speed boom) function is very useful. When selected by the operator, it doubles the speed of boom movements. The KB is then controlled by a remote transmitter that incorporates the MIS system. This maintains contact with the machine continuously. The operating parameters of the machine are shown on the bright LCD transmitter screen (including the load being lifted, the degrees being towed and any faults). Furthermore, the system signals via LED lights the machine functions that are possible at any given time, having analyzed the passive safety of the machine. But the electronics do not stop there. The EMS system automatically adjusts engine power, according to the task being undertaken, optimizing speed for smooth and safe movements. At the end of the task, the system returns the engine to idling to save fuel, and you can also choose and customize the power threshold according to required use. Also note the SSF (computed stabiliza-
45
tion and destabilization) system that allows the user to stabilize and retract the machine in an automatic way, with precision down to half a degree. By pressing a button, the machine starts the automatic stabilization or retraction process quickly and independently. It then continues with the IPSone (position and management service) that allows the KB to talk simultaneously with the Cormidi office management and its owner. You can determine the location of the machine, its state of use, any alarms onboard and correct or add new software. Last but not least, there is the MSS (management safety system) with a dual control system, which oversees all the vital functions and security. Furthermore, a very powerful black box stores anomalies and misuse of the machine, and is therefore ideal for rental companies who need to know the conditions under which the machine is being used. The new KBs have a hydraulic system with five pumps, which allows for two travel speeds, selectable via the transmitter. The speed first is used for dangerous movements requiring accuracy, such as during loading onto trucks. The machine in this configuration can climb slopes in the order of 60 percent. The second speed is used for ground transfers, with a maximum speed of about 2 mph (3.3 kmh). Most striking is the angle of attack that allows you to go climb up to 28 degrees, which is approximately 6.5 ft. (2 m) in height of 13 ft. (4 m) in length. Turret rotation is 365 degrees. With the new KBs divided into two groups 13 to 16 and 19 to 22, Cormidi replaces, in one fell swoop, the traditional work platforms and scissor, mini-cranes, telehandlers and compact machines: creating the ultimate multi-purpose machines for use profitably in construction, marine, forest, garden and many other areas. Cormidi will be at booth 3600 at ConExpo.
Flangelock The FlangeLock Tool is an easy-to-use cap that slides over the flange and is sealed with one turn of the bottom plug, keeping oil in and contaminants out. It is produced in sizes for 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 40, 48 and 56 in SAE Codes 61, 62 and thick Caterpillar-style hydraulic flanges. The flange lock is currently being manufactured in aluminum in the United States. “The flange lock represents major savings in a number of areas,” Mike Pearl, part owner of Flange Lock LLC, said. “It will save time in that there won’t be any oil leaking and having to be cleaned up. It will save money because again, with no leaks, no oil is wasted. And a really big savings will be with EPA cleanups. The EPA is looking at a lot of equipment right now and
a lot of companies are being temporarily shut down in order to get things cleaned up. The FlangeLock will cut way down on that lost time and money.” Equipment owners seeking to stop oil leaks are not the only ones who will benefit from the FlangeLock. Pearl foresees the factories where the equipment is manufactured being able to use the FlangeLock
Bair Bair Products Inc. specializes in after market parts that fit CAT/ASV and undercarriage parts for MTL skid loaders. They will be located in Booth #40312 Central Hall 2. Lugs also are reuseable; when the track’s life is done, remove and reinstall on another track. Custom lugs are available for AGG/farming tracks such as Case Quad, John Deere and Cat Challenger. Hydraulic Rubber Track Removal and Installation Kit Remove and install rubber tracks faster and easier with hydraulic tools. Tracks are moved into place with a hydraulic cylinder
during the assembly process to keep contaminants from entering the lines and, if a customer desires, selling them on the equipment. The flange lock is currently being sold at many construction equipment distributors and fluid power dealers across the country. For more information call 914/9808890, or visit www.flangelock.com.
Central Hall that is powered by a porta-power or simple grease gun. On some machines, the cylinder will pull the drive forward, move tracks into place and push the drive back into place. Greaseable Alloy Wheels Heavy duty alloy wheels outlive factory rubber wheels, according to Bair. Alloy wears smooth over time and will not chunk, crack or crevice like rubber. Some wheels are greaseable with a grease fitting installed in the hub for fast and easy lubrication. Alloy wheels can be installed onto factory axles. Axle Assemblies Bair axles are greasable/grease filled and completely rebuildable, including the inner steel shaft. They fit Cat 267/277/287, ASV/Terex 85/100/4520/etc. They replace outdated factory oil sealed axles with ball bearings. Idler axles have double stacked,

tapered bearings on both ends for extra strength. Stop Rubber Track Derailments on Compact Track Loaders Turn single and dual sided factory wheels into triple sided, capturing the track’s cleats at all sides and spreading the track’s cleats out so the idler wheels cannot “walk out of the track”. Fits Cat 279C/289C/297C/299C and John Deere. Hydraulic Rubber Track Tensioners Replace rusted, freezed up, hard to turn factory jack screws with a simple hydraulic cylinder. No modifications needed; remove the old jackscrew and install the new cylinder using the existing bolts. Tracks are tightened and loosened in seconds with a grease gun.
Crane InstItute Crane Institute of America, Sanford, Fla., will feature “The Complete Package” at Booth 2973 in the Gold Lot at ConExpo-Con/AGG, March 4 to 8, 2014. To make it easier for corporate trainers to maintain ongoing training at their facilities, Crane Institute has introduced a new train-the-trainer combination program called “The Complete Package.” In two weeks’ time, trainers can become a Crane Institute of America certified instructor and an authorized practical examiner for Crane Institute Certification (CIC), a nationally accredited, OSHA-recognized certification for crane operators, riggers and signalpersons. In addition, trainers may lease Crane Institute of America’s online training program materials. Both limited and unlimited licenses are available. “The Complete Package eliminates the cost for trainers to develop and maintain their own training programs, and it makes training more accessible to workers, thereby increasing job site safety,” said Jim Headley, director of Crane Institute of America. Trainers participating in the mobile crane or rigger train-the-trainer courses will learn how to conduct the same training programs that are used by Crane Institute of America’s instructors. Trainer topics include “Learning how to be a great trainer and facilitator,” and “How to create a learning environment.” Certified instructors can purchase student materials, books, workbooks and other resources created for the training program. According to Headley, quality training is more about the program than it is the instructor. “When provided with properly developed materials, good trainers have a greater chance of success.”
Gold Lot
The Complete Package consists of both Train-the-Trainer Mobile Crane instruction and CIC Practical Examiner Training.
“It’s a bit like NASCAR,” he said. “The drivers are the ones that get champagne poured on them at the end of the race, but the mechanics working behind the scenes were just as important in the success of that car.”
Among the technical topics covered in the Mobile Crane Complete Package are current standards, causes of accidents, interpreting load charts, pre-op inspection and crane setup. The Rigger/Signalperson Complete Package covers safe use of slings, wire rope and hardware; current standards; pre-use inspection, hand/voice signals and much more. Successful completion of the CIC Authorized Practical Examiner portion of the package allows you to complete your own in-house practical exams to certify your crane operators, riggers, and signalpersons to meet or exceed OSHA requirements. In addition, Crane Institute will introduce other new training and inspection resources in 2014, including: • Licensed material for the Overhead Crane Operator Train-the-Trainer program. • Digital inspection checklists that interface with various digital tools, such as digital cameras. • Online training courses that allows students to learn at their own pace. The selfdirected instruction includes quizzes at completion of material presentation. For more information, visit www.craneinstitute.com.

Wirtgen Continuing a tradition of strong exposure at North America’s largest construction equipment exposition, Wirtgen Group will display 41 machines — most of them new i-series products — at ConExpoCon/AGG. Wirtgen America will occupy the 39,600-sq. ft. stand No. 51021 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. There it will display new asphalt pavers of all sizes from Vögele, concrete slipform pavers, cold mills and recyclers from Wirtgen, asphalt and soil compactors from Hamm, and mobile crushers from Kleemann. New Tier IV interim-compliant equipment from Wirtgen Group featuring intelligent technology — designated “i-series” models — will dominate the 41-machine exhibit at ConExpo. Of note will be the big new Super 21003i with AB 600 TP2 Plus screed, successor to the Super 2100-2. It will be displayed being fed by a Wirtgen 3800 CR recycler, simulating cold in-place recycling. Another highlight will be a new 10-ft. (3 m) Vision 5200-2i paver with AB 600 TV screed being fed by Vögele’s new material transfer vehicle for North America, the Vision MT 3000-2i Power Feeder. KCMA Corporation, the marketer of Kawasaki wheel loaders in North America, will showcase an interactive cab of the 115Z7 wheel loader, which is an electric simulator of this machine, at ConExpo. The 115Z7 is completely redesigned to meet all EPA Tier IVi emission standards as well as to improve operating efficiency and productivity. It features 531 net hp (396 kW) and is equipped with an 8.3 cu. yd. (6.3 cu m) general purpose bucket.
