Milking an Opportunity After the family moved down to Milford, life on the farm became routine and one day while milking the cows, son George, mentioned to his father, Perley, that a Ford tractor dealership was going out of business. Perley replied to George, “Look inito it.” “It was George and his wife, Pauline, who wrote a letter to the Ford Motor Company asking about the possibility of having a dealership in the Milford area. George was never enamored of milking cows and sought a better way of making a living. His love of getting the job done easier was a catalyst for starting the tractor business,” said Kent. After much negotiating, the paperwork was complete and George was off and running the dealership, while Perley continued on the farm for a time until he too left farming and supported George’s efforts in making George Chappell is seen here picking up tractors as they arrive at the train station in downtown Milford. From here, he had to drive them up the road to the dealership. the tractor business work. “It was a gradual thing ... we purchased a few tractors and some other equipment, then started selling them. It grew from a small start. Since there was a four-car garage at the farm and some extra space in the barn on the main level, father and son used that for office, parts storage and shop area for working on the tractors,” said Kent.

The development of Route 101 led to another move in 1970 to a 7,200-sq.-ft. structural steel building up the road. An addition of a lawn and garden showroom soon followed. 6

New Machines, New Moves With his new machines, George instilled a work ethic geared to customer satisfaction and loyalty. He believed that if he treated people right, they would continue coming back to him. His philosophy worked as the company grew, adding machine lines and moving to

increasingly larger facilities. In 1960, the company moved from the Chappell family farm to a 3,000-sq.-ft. cement block building on Route 13. The development of Route 101 led to another move in 1970 to a 7,200-sq.-ft. structural steel building up the road. An addition of a lawn and garden showroom soon followed. In 1985, the company moved across the street to a facility more than twice the size of its previous location. This is where the family created a post and beam facility for office, parts and showroom. In 1995, Chappell Tractor added the “big house” service area

for larger pieces of equipment, and in 2005, the family added on to that facility with another post and beam addition of approximately 15,000 sq. ft. Today, Chappell Tractor carries Kubota, New Holland agricultural and construction equipment, Hyundai, Link-Belt excavators, Takeuchi and much more. Putting People at Ease In 1985, brothers Kent and Roger Chappell built the unique post and beam building where the company’s headquarters is now. It was a big leap to go from 9,840 sq. ft. to almost 25,000 sq. ft.,

Chappell Tractor’s Milford, N.H., facility also houses the B-B Chain and its Outfitter store. 8

but they were up for the challenge. The move really paid off as customers enjoyed the new feel of a post and beam facility. “The post and beam structure did exactly what we hoped it would — it put people at ease when they walked in and took away the fear of high pressure found in the typical steel and glass environment,” said Brad Chappell, who, along with cousin Corey, is the fourth generation to run the business. “We wanted to go away from ‘typical’ and found that using granite and wood worked well for making people feel at home. Offering our customers free coffee when they walk through the door has been a welcome touch as well.”

B-B Chain is a hardware, hand tool, strap, chain, specialty supply store and, most of all, one of the largest tire chain suppliers in New England.

Tractor and Chain In 1994, Chappell Tractor Sales purchased B-B Chain from retiring Bob Bragdon, who founded and had operated B-B Chain since 1965. Today, the company operates B-B Chain from both Chappell Tractor locations in Milford and Brentwood, N.H. “B-B Chain is a hardware, hand tool, strap, chain, specialty supply store and, most of all, one of the largest tire chain suppliers in New England,” said manager Jason Cote. “We currently have four

employees and I have been with the company 15-plus years and the company has grown in leaps and bounds. “There are now two delivery trucks on the road, servicing the [area] towns and construction world, as well as the towing industry. We all work together like brothers and do our very best to make each and every customer as happy as possible,” added Cote. “We strive to keep up with the most current products and ever-changing laws in our business for overhead lifting. The company now approaches 47 years since the doors opened, and we hope to do that and more as we head into the future of our industry.” Of former B-B Chain owner Bob Bragdon, co-owner Corey Chappell said, “Bob Bragdon was a name well respected in the area. We had an opportunity to purchase his company 16 years ago and we decided to keep the name. It dovetailed beautifully with the tractor business and has become a solid part of what we do today.” “Jason Cote and his boys, Pete, Adam and Tucker, are either on the road or servicing customers in house,” added Corey.

Kubota tractors are lined up and ready to find new homes.

Serving All the Towns B-B Chain drivers deliver orders to more than 720 towns in the New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont area. B-B Chain grew out of the original space and has now moved into its new quarters in the lower level of Chappell Tractor in Milford. “These drivers deliver every product we sell in B-B Chain,” said Kent.

Among the many lines Chappell Tractor represents are Link-Belt and Hyundai excavators.

In 1998, the company expanded even further by opening a second location on Route 125 in Brentwood, N.H. 14

“The municipal garages are regular stops as well as towing companies, large construction companies and anyone needing our products. These are the areas that Bob Bragdon served and we have just expanded on it. There are fewer people doing this type of personalized service.” Going East In 1998, the company expanded even further by opening a second location on Route 125 in Brentwood, N.H. The new Chappell Tractor East started with an 8,000-sq.-ft. structural steel building. In 2002, the company doubled the shop and showroom space by adding another 9,600 sq. ft., complete with a post and beam front porch and entryway. Included in this expansion is a state-of-theart service facility. ‘Service is what really sets us apart. If you look at other operations in the area, there isn’t the same emphasis placed on service,” said Brad. In September 2005, the company began an expansion project that would add 14,000 sq. ft. to the existing dealership at 454 Route 13 in Milford. The expansion was completed during summer of 2006, with a grand opening. The new facility is home to Chappell Tractor, B-B Chain and Outfitters. This provided the Chappell brand with a new tractor showroom, lawn and garden showroom and added space for the newest department, Outfitters by Chappell, to sell a complete line of clothing, shoes and boots for the company. “Brad and I wanted to follow in the family footsteps by staying unique and to continue to provide customers the personal attention they deserve,” said Corey Chappell. “We have a one-of-a-kind indoor showroom for the equipment industry. Additionally, our lawn and garden section has grown with the expansion, enhancing our ability to help people with their questions and find the right piece of new or used equipment for their needs the first time.” “We created a true showroom that would house tractors and equipment — one where people could wander around in the days of winter. After all, we have a real fireplace going in the winter ... with a free cup of coffee in hand. How could it get much better?” added Brad.

Edgar is an in-house craftsman, who has custom made sale counters, stairs, and just about everything else in Chappell Tractor’s facilities.

Mike and Jeanne Beaulieu are a husband and wife team at Chappell Tractor. Mike is in sales on the road in Milford and Jeanne is a co-parts manager in Milford.

A New Line of Success As for one of the newest lines, Outfitters by Chappell, Brad said, “B-B Chain had always had a limited supply of work clothes, but it was decided to expand on that idea. When the new addition was put on in 2005, it gave us space to display an entire line of clothing that our customers could enjoy browsing through. We have something for everyone — kids, women, guys, you name it. Today, we had our oldest customer in the store — 101.” The showroom and displays are presented like a sort of L.L. Bean.. “We did pattern our store after the likes of L.L. Bean,” said Brad. “We found a store in Lancaster, New Hampshire, that was selling several of the same clothing products we sell. We took a trip there to see how they did it.” Has anyone ever bought a tractor and an outfit to go with it at

the same time, while relaxing over free coffee to make that decision? “While ‘Mister’ is purchasing the tractor, the ‘Missus’ is doing retail therapy at Outfitters,” laughed Brad. “Many people tell us they would love to live in a place like our showroom. The company that did the Post and Beam showroom has sold homes (made like that) from people being here [to shop].”

people, be fair and honest in your dealings and people walking through the door will become and stay customers. “And when the economy changes, you have to make adjustments. Some are painful, but you must remember the company needs to be healthy to survive. When times are good, you share the profits, when things are more restricted you have to pull back,” he added. The company currently has about 50 employees.

Surviving the Storms Times are challenging now for everyone, including businesses, of course. But they’ve been difficult in the past, too. How can a business continue to withstand the onslaught of recessions after 55 years in business? “You do that by treating people like you want to be treated. This is the key,” said Brad. “There really isn’t a mystery. Be friendly to

The Customer Is Always Right The Chappells differ from some companies that claim they like serving the public, but feel very differently behind closed doors. Chappell Tractor and its team truly do enjoy serving the public and hope that customers continue to “Notice the Difference” at Chappell Tractor.

Glowing customer testimonials such as this one often can be found of the company’s Web site, www.chappelltractor.com. “I bought a brand new Kubota L3400 from Dave. What an easy deal. When I sent someone to pick it up, everyone was very helpful and he was leaving before he knew. Very organized company. Great people to deal with. Thanks, Dave!” Since 1955, when Eisenhower was in the White House and Elvis was still an unknown truck driver, the team of Chappell Tractor, Chappell Tractor East and B-B Chain has been known for its dedication to serving all customers with the best quality construction and agricultural products, knowledgeable parts and certified service departments. A down home atmosphere and friendly environment make tangible Chappell Tractor’s motto, “You’ll Notice the Difference!” Its employees go above and beyond the call of duty. Many long-term employees who have put in 20 to 30 or more years include Rachel Bateman, Dave Gage, Flip Henry, Steve Markham, Walt Reindeau, Mike and Jeanne Beaulieu. Longevity at a company not only reveals that the business treats its employees well, but it also indicates a belief in the mission and goals of the company by its members. And customers only benefit from this unfortunate rarity in today’s business world.

Creating the Difference “At Chappell Tractor and its affiliated companies, it is the attention to detail, the friendly atmosphere and fair way of doing business,” said Brad. “We are our own worst critics. When we shop elsewhere, we analyze and bring those ideas back to our place to make improvements. A difference customers will notice as they walk through the front doors is that they open automatically. For many years, George watched customers struggle when leaving with large items. Now, customers can freely move in and out of the facility without ever having to touch the door. “Another thing that sets us apart is our latest example of staying with or ahead of the times,” added Brad. “This summer, we purchased a state-of-the-art, fully automatic chain sharpening machine in Milford. It’s the only one in New Hampshire. “There are many benefits to this machine, including that it can scan each tooth with a three-fold scanner to correct the depth gauge and sharpen the cutting edge in one precise movement. This uniform sharpening results in a quality, resharpened chain, improving customer satisfaction. Also, a customer can come in and have his or her chain sharpened and back in 10 minutes, as opposed to dropping it off and waiting a day or more to get it back,” he said. Patriarch Perley would have loved this latest machine, just as he would have prized Chappell Tractor’s approach to its customers, products and services: excellence in quality, longevity, attention to detail, service, improvements, satisfying those you serve. From the first tractor ever in a Clarksville barn, to the newest chain sharpener in New Hampshire, Chappell Tractor has not only shown the way, they have led it.
