How to Get the Most From a Booth Visit at ConExpo CONEXPO from page 8

By Jeff Winke CEG CORRESPONDENT

For most attending ConExpo, the biggest construction show in North America, it will feel like construction paradise. It is the one opportunity to be able to see and touch the latest iron, the most sophisticated technology, and play with the greatest software. For many contractors, it is probably like being a kid in a candy store. ConExpo can be overwhelming and exhilarating. Clearly, it makes sense to develop a plan of which exhibitors to visit and then to organize the list into two parts: “must see” and “want to see” companies. Obviously, getting to the “must see” exhibitors is the priority. Here are some suggestions for getting the most from a booth visit: • Have an objective — what needs to be seen and key questions that need to be answered. • When you first arrive at an exhibit, step back and visually take in the whole booth. There will be valuable planning and logic that went into the display. • Create an information-gathering form for research

tacts and write “ConExpo 2017” on the back of each as a reminder of where and when you met. • Use your smartphone to take pictures of displays, products that are of interest and company logos. Take video and record memos on your smartphone to capture complicated explanations, descriptions or demonstrations. • Be sparing in collecting literature so as to not be weighted down. Have most literature and samples mailed to you. See if pdfs of critical information can be emailed to you and make note on the back of the business card of the person who has promised to do so. • If possible, network within a booth. You may find valuable contacts to have in the future. • Skip overly crowded booths and plan to come later or at ConExpo can be overwhelming and exhilarating, so it end of day when traffic is slower. makes sense to develop a plan of which exhibitors to It is unrealistic to expect to see everything at ConExpo. visit and then to organize the list. The Association for Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) is the owner and organizer for ConExpo-Con/AGG 2017, the triennial tradeshow, which is the largest international gathering in the Western Hemisphere for the construction industries. Here are suggestions and tips from AEM, for making attendance at ConExpo enriching and worthwhile. Patricia Monroe, public relations manager, of AEM collected much of this information from resources within AEM and also offered two bits of personal advice: “Wear comfortable shoes and keep hydrated.”

Events to Raise Funds for Call of Duty Endowment ConExpo-Con/AGG and IFPE have announced that The Call of Duty Endowment has been named its official charitable partner for the 2017 events slated for March 7 to 11 in Las Vegas. The Call of Duty Endowment is a nonprofit organization founded by Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, in 2009 to help veterans secure highquality jobs after their military service and to raise awareness of the value vets bring to the workplace. The Endowment has placed more than 29,000 veterans in jobs to date by finding and funding the best nonprofits in the country. “We’re so grateful for ConExpo-Con/AGG and IFPE’s remarkable support of our veterans,” said Dan Goldenberg, executive director of the Call of Duty Endowment. “Every dollar received by the Endowment will go directly towards the most effective and efficient veteran job counseling services in America. These will be dollars well-spent.”

Due to unemployment among post-9/11 veterans remaining 2.6 times greater than the national average, the Endowment has doubled down on its mission and set a new goal of placing 50,000 veterans in jobs by 2019. Every single dollar donated goes towards this important work, and just $600 helps a veteran find a high quality job. “We’ve already had our first major donation to help raise funds for the Endowment,” said Sara Truesdale Mooney, show director. “We’re thrilled to announce that Terex Corporation has donated a benefit concert featuring multiplatinum rock band, Foreigner, for Wednesday, March 8, generously hosted by Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas.” Attendees of the show will be allowed to make a donation to the Endowment for entrance to the concert. Information and details will be available early 2017. “Citizenship is one of our core values,” said John Garrison, CEO and president of Terex Corporation. “Joining forces with ConExpo-Con/AGG and the Call of

Duty Endowment is a great way to live out that value by helping to create an enjoyable evening that will raise funds for a great cause benefiting our veterans.” Additional fundraising events planned for the Endowment include on-line silent and live auctions with 100 percent of auction proceeds aimed at helping military veterans find jobs. Hitachi Prepares for a Big ConExpo Visitors to the Hitachi ConExpo-Con/AGG booth — #N12525 in the North Hall — will discover why owners and operators are “Hitachi To The Core” and how Hitachi equipment helps them make good on jobsite promises to customers every day. The Hitachi booth, which will be part of John Deere’s large North Hall exhibit, will give visitors a chance to get upclose and personal with some of the most efficient, reliable and durable excavators at the show, meet with product experts and preview new technology. “Hitachi leverages its expertise and legacy of meeting demanding mining applications to deliver efficient, reliable and durable construction equipment,” said Carlos Uriarte, division manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery — Americas. “Hitachi owners experience the benefits of the equipment on a daily basis and are extremely loyal, which served as part of our inspiration for this year’s ConExpo

theme — ‘Hitachi to the Core.’” Hitachi will display models from all four major equipment classes: compact excavators, utility excavators, reduced-tailswing excavators and construction/production class excavators. The company will also unveil two new models that will become available to contractors within the next 12 months. All of Hitachi’s Dash-6 excavators feature Isuzu engines that deliver fuel-efficient and powerful performance, and do not require a diesel particulate filter (DPF). This lowers operating costs and minimizes maintenance time. Beyond equipment, Hitachi will highlight a number of technology innovations and options designed to help contractors get jobs done while keeping operating costs low. Among them is an enhanced factory-installed grade guidance system for its construction excavators that will complement the company’s existing grade reference-ready package. In addition, the company will introduce a new canopy option on an existing excavator model and formally launch The Herd, a new, exclusive group for Hitachi owners, operators and fans. Hitachi employees from dozens of countries will be on hand during the show, responding to customers’ questions and discussing their business needs. with experts to assist attendees and answer questions. “ConExpo is a one-of-a-kind industry event and we’re excited to be exhibiting this year with our largest display of crawler carriers to date,” said Matt Slater, director of sales at Terramac. “We look forward to a successful show with a great turn out and the opportunity to connect with many of our dealers and customers.” The Terramac products feature powerful Cummins diesel engines and added torque, allowing operators to tackle a wide-range of applications with ease. Terramac crawler carriers also boast large carrying capacities and impressive travel speeds to ensure quick cycle times and keep productivity levels on point — regardless of application. Terramac RT9 and RT14 Designed to provide an unprecedented degree of customization, the Terramac RT9 and RT14 feature easy front and rear bolt-on attachments which enable an array of specialized equipment to be mounted, such as: bark blowers, cranes, drills, generators and tanks. The standard hydraulic system incorporated into each Terramac model is designed to accommodate the attachments, whereas competing units require a hydraulic conversion to take place. Standard units are available with either a flat bed, convertible dump to flat bed (RT9 only), or rock bed. Terramac RT14R Built with a rugged upper frame that rotates a full 360 degrees, the Terramac RT14R crawler carrier hauls and dumps material at any position, even while driving. This rotational functionality allows the RT14R to offload materials faster than a standard straight frame unit as its tracks don’t need to be counter rotated to drive another direction. The RT14R’s ability to dump without tearing up the surrounding ground also minimizes environmental damage and land restoration costs. Low ground pressure and rotating functionality make the RT14R ideal for work in confined spaces and environmentally sensitive areas, such as: railroad track right of way access, rivers and levees, general earthmoving, site prep, mining and utility job sites.

Hitachi will display models from all four major equipment classes: compact excavators, utility excavators, reduced-tail-swing excavators and construction/production class excavators.

Terramac to Showcase Crawler Carriers Terramac, a manufacturer of rubber track crawler carriers, will be showcasing three versatile crawler carrier models in booth G1716 in the Gold Lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center. On display at Terramac’s booth will be the RT9, RT14 and RT14R crawler carrier models, all of which deliver superior performance and versatility to tackle the toughest jobs. These units are well-equipped to provide operators with maximum efficiency and easy maintenance in a variety of applications from pipeline or utility to aggregates and general construction, according to the manufacturer. In addition to displaying equipment, Terramac will conduct product demonstrations, exhibit unique customization capabilities of its crawler carriers and showcase its innovative rubber track technology and advanced safety and efficiency features. Terramac’s ConExpo booth will be staffed

Rubber Track Technology The feature that sets Terramac’s units apart from other vehicles is its rubber track technology. Terramac crawler carriers exert minimal ground pressure while fully loaded, making them ideal for loose and wet ground conditions where heavy, wheeled or steel track machines are likely to get stuck. Flotation from the units’ rubber tracks leave a minimal footprint and less disturbance on the soil while providing reduced slippage to conquer adverse conditions, climb faster on rugged terrain and reach remote areas. For more information, call 630/365-4800 or visit www.terramac.com.

Maximus North America is setting the gold standard for the Mobile Crushing & Screening industry by introducing the Irish based Maximus Crushing and Screening product line into North America in 2015. This statement proved to be true and ironic when one of the stars of the Discovery Channel’s hit TV show “Gold Rush” noticed the bright red Maximus MXJ-1000 Jaw Crusher at an industry trade show in 2016. Dave Turin, who oversees mining and production for 316 Mining LLC, otherwise known as The Hoffman Team, stopped by the Maximus North America stand as he was leaving the trade show because the quality, fit and finish of the machine caught his attention and he was interested to see whether there might be any synergies between the 316 Mining Team and the Maximus brand. Stu Gamble, president of Maximus North America, and a few of the MNA dealers struck up a conversation with Turin about the product line and it was discovered that Maximus did indeed have a machine in its product line that could fit in the gold mining operation. The 316 Mining Team’s set up at the time included a trommel screen that could separate material but did not have a hopper which would allow material to be fed into it. Maximus builds a TFC-80 360 degree swivel feed hopper stacker that would have the capability of remotely operating on a 90 degree angle. This technology would allow The Hoffman Team to feed pay dirt directly into the hopper on any terrain angle, which then would feed directly into the trommel that the team was using to separate the rocks from the fines of the pay dirt. The Maximus TFC-80 not only increased the team’s production ability but also was used to return the dredged land back to its original condition after the gold was mined, which is something that the mining team holds as a top priority. In the world of gold-mining, there are very few things that are predictable. Adverse weather conditions, rough terrain, the threat of wild animals always very real and present, and the hurdle of mounting expenses with no guarantee of a pay out, all could very well turn away the average miner to give up their dream of finding real gold. The 316 Mining Team’s see CONEXPO page 46

Wheel Loaders Doosan wheel loaders excel in digging, loading and lifting applications. Each of the 10 models offer outstanding performance, reliability, fuel efficiency, operator comfort and ease of serviceability. In addition, many models are available with a high-lift configuration for extra reach and dump height. Doosan offers two lift-arm designs: A Z-bar loader linkage and parallel lift arm. Two tool carrier models ― the DL200TC-5 and DL250TC-5 ― are designed with the parallel lift arm to provide added versatility and multiple attachment capabilities. An optional quick coupler makes changing attachments fast and easy. Hydrostatic transmissions have been incorporated in two smaller Doosan wheel loader models ― the DL200-5 and DL200TC-5 ― for improved fuel efficiency and precise operation. Key features of the hydrostatic drive include dynamic braking and speed management. The latter is beneficial when operating attachments that require high auxiliary hydraulic flow at slow travel speeds.

Tadano GR1200XL-2, ATF110G-5 to Debut at ConExpo 2017

Tadano will show its 120-ton (109 t) capacity GR1200XL rough-terrain crane at ConExpo.

Articulated Dump Trucks Moving more material in less time is just one of the benefits of the dash-5 Doosan ADTs. The two models ― the DA30-5 and DA40-5 ― offer excellent load capacities coupled with superior power and traction. The machine is designed to maintain tire contact with the ground at all times due to the machine’s tandem rear bogie, front-mounted turning ring, sloping rear frame and front suspension. Doosan ADTs offer permanent, six-wheel drive that provides excellent traction in all applications, according to the manufacturer. DX380LL-5 Log Loader The DX380LL-5 log loader is designed for demanding logging applications and tasks such as shovel-logging, sorting and log-loading. The newest Doosan log loader weighs approximately 113,500 lbs. (51,483 kg) and is powered by a Tier IV-compliant, 318-hp diesel engine. Featuring high swing torque, approximately 44 ft. (13.4 m) of reach at ground level and powerful hydraulics, the DX380LL-5 is primed for peak performance when working on forestry tracts. Doosan DX380LL-5 log loaders are designed with a log loader workgroup with a live heel. Doosan 360-degree rotating log grapples are commonly paired with the log loader’s live heel to efficiently lift, rotate, move and place logs.

By popular demand, Tadano has reintroduced the ATF110G-5 all-terrain crane.

The new GR1200XL will be introduced at ConExpo 2017. With 120 tons (109 t) of capacity, this crane is the newest addition to Tadano’s line of rough terrain cranes. The GR1200XL sits at the core of Tadano’s large rough terrain line-up and features one of the industry’s longest boom and jib combinations. The GR1200XL features a 183-ft. 7 in. (56 m) 6-section formed boom. It is complemented with a 33 ft. 2-in. (10.1 m) to 58 ft. 1 in. (17.7 m) jib and sits on a compact 2-axle carrier. Considered the “new generation of rough terrain cranes,” Tadano continues to expand the GR series rough terrain Doosan Machines on Display crane line-up that now includes seven models ranging from Listed below are the Doosan machines scheduled to be on 15 to 160 tons (12 to 145 t). These cranes are mainstays in display during ConExpo. the energy/petrochemical/construction sectors due to their • DA40-5 articulated dump truck reputation for reliability, safety and operational performance. • DL200-5 wheel loader Tadano’s customer base of large fleet owners recognizes the • DL220-5 wheel loader GR series as being the lowest cost rough terrain cranes to • DL250TC-5 wheel loader own and operate, according to the manufacturer. • DL420-5 wheel loader “We are particularly eager to unveil this new crane at • DL550-5 wheel loader ConExpo that fills the gap between our popular and market • DX140LCR-5 crawler excavator leading GR1000XL and GR1600XL models,” said Ingo • DX225LC-5 crawler excavator Schiller incoming president of Tadano America. “Tadano • DX300LC-5 SLR crawler excavator continues to lead the rough terrain crane market by building • DX350LC-5 crawler excavator high quality cranes that have the lifting performance and • DX490LC-5 crawler excavator ease of transport that our customers need.” • DX190W-5 wheel excavator Other important features include: • DX225LL-5 log loader • Tadano’s load moment indicator (AML-C) with full onboard diagnostics • DX380LL-5 log loader • Cummins powered Tier IV compliant QSB6.7 direct LCR: Reduced tail swing injection engine SLR: Super-long reach • Tadano quality manufactured hoist and telescopic TC: Tool carrier cylinders For more information, visit DoosanEquipment.com.

Visit Sandvik Mining Doosan Portable Terex Finlay Touts Its and Rock Technology Power G25, G50, G70 I-140 Impact Crusher at ConExpo-Con/AGG Mobile Generators

The Terex Finlay I-140 direct drive 50 by 48 in. (127 by 124 cm) horizontal impact crusher with variable speed gives operators unprecedented levels of production in both recycling, mining and quarrying applications, according to the manufacturer.

The Terex Finlay I-140 direct drive 50 by 48 in. (127 by 124 cm) horizontal impact crusher with variable speed gives operators unprecedented levels of production in both recycling, mining and quarrying applications. The robust and proven Terex CR032 chamber gives excellent reduction ratios and high consistency of product shape, according to the manufacturer. A significant engineering approach being introduced in this model is the material flow through the plant. The flow of material has been significantly improved by increasing the width of components as the material moves through the machine. The machine features an advanced electronic control system that monitors and controls the speed of the rotor and regulates the heavy duty vibrating feeder (VGF) with integrated pre-screen to maintain a consistent feed of material into the impact chamber for optimal crushing conditions. Material from the integrated pre-screen can be diverted to a stock pile via the optional by-pass conveyor, or it may join the crushed product on the main belt. The standard hopper capacity is 7.5 cu. yds. (6 cu m). “The introduction of the Terex Finlay I-140 represents a significant step change in our family of impact crushers. Our field test results of extensive testing have recorded significant productivity increases depending on the application, over the model that it replaces. The enhanced material flow process of the plant represents a significant step change to our engineering ethos and in due course will be extended to encompass our range of impact crushers,” said Alan Witherow, product manager. Key Features: • The ease of material flow through the machine has greatly improved with each component of the machine increasing in width as the material moves through the machine. • Fully hydraulic apron setting assist provides convenient and efficient adjustment of the aprons. • Heavy duty vibrating feeder (VGF) with integrated prescreen removes dirt fines and sizes bypass material for reprocessing. • Optional under crusher vibratory plate feeder with wear resistant liners aids material discharge flow.

Sandvik’s latest generation of carbide grades, has made it possible to create new, extra-coarse, supertough alloys with perfectly uniform grain structure.

Visitors are encouraged to visit Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology in the Silver Lot, booth S5128, during ConExpo-Con/AGG, to learn about new developments in mineral and ground tools for mining, trenching and road planing. Sandvik’s latest generation of carbide grades, manufactured using an innovative process technique with completely new raw materials, has made it possible to create new, extra-coarse, super-tough alloys with perfectly uniform grain structure. The benefit is that the tip’s material grade can be better matched to hard rock and soft rock applications, according to the manufacturer. Sandvik constantly develops new hard material alloys to function in the most demanding environments. One result of its extensive research projects in this field is the development of the new carbide grade generation — providing larger, stronger and more efficient tools. Demands on tool performance, particularly relating to cemented carbide tip material and its resistance to wear and fracture, become more critical as operations progress into harder rock and mineral formations. Larger continuous cutting machines are being used to replace the traditional drill-and-blast process in many mining projects. This continuous cutting process offers a lower cost per ton of excavated material, ensures better worker safety and also has a positive effect on the environment, according to the manufacturer. Sandvik is a leading supplier of machines and tool systems for all rock, surface and mineral excavation applications. The company delivers millions of tools annually for numerous applications — from road planing and ice scraping, to projects that require roof drilling bits for all types of coal and soft minerals, to tools that meet the needs of the biggest tunneling, trenching and surface mining applications. Sandvik tools are manufactured globally to the highest quality standards, using the strongest materials and most stringent manufacturing processes to ensure their hardness and superior performance in the field. Sandvik Construction manufactures a full line of tools and accessories for the road planing, reclaiming, trenching, foundation drilling and grading industries. Sandvik offers customers the entire package — products, service and expertise. For more than 150 years, Sandvik has been creating value for customers worldwide through relationships that combine hands-on knowledge of each customer’s processes with realworld applications knowledge. For more information, call 1-800/868-6657 or visit www.construction.sandvik.com.

The G25, G50 and G70 mobile generators incorporate numerous innovations based on customer input and are aimed at improving operator experience.

Doosan Portable Power now offers three newly designed models to its mobile generator lineup — G25, G50 and G70. The G25, G50 and G70 mobile generators incorporate numerous innovations based on customer input and are aimed at improving operator experience. The newly packaged Tier IV Final–compliant generators offer improved fuel efficiency, extended runtimes and the industry’s lowest sound levels — all without sacrificing reliability and performance. The G25, G50 and G70 models are the first mobile generators equipped with Doosan-built engines — the D18, D24 and D34 respectively. The high-performance engines deliver increased fuel economy and motor starting capability and reliable operation in extreme conditions. The D18 and D24 engines are designed with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment system, which is virtually maintenance-free. The D34 engine consists of DOC with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment. “The Doosan powertrain allows our Doosan Portable Power authorized dealer network to provide end-to-end service and full warranty support, offering customers the advantages of a single source for all maintenance and repairs,” said Todd Howe, global generator product manager, Doosan Portable Power. The introduction of the G50 mobile generator marked a size increase in the Doosan Portable Power generator product line. The G50 (51 kVA) replaced the G40 (35 kVA) generator, a change driven by customer demand for higher kVA output. Another customer-driven feature of the G25, G50 and G70 is increased onboard fuel capacity for runtimes in excess of 24-hours at any load factor. An optional 48-hour runtime solution is available on the G25 and G70 models. The newly packaged generators also are quieter than previous models, most notably the G25, which features one of the industry’s lowest sound levels at 63 dBA, according to the manufacturer. “These multipurpose generator models are popular rental items, especially for general construction and event applications where extended runtime without refueling and low sound levels are required,” said Howe. see CONEXPO page 70

Volvo to Showcase 28 Machines During ConExpo/Con-AGG

Showcasing a total of 28 machines, including new models and concept vehicles, Volvo is offering visitors multiple interactive experiences to see how it is pushing boundaries of conventional machine design and technology.

Showcasing a total of 28 machines, including new models and concept vehicles, Volvo is offering visitors multiple interactive experiences to see how it is pushing boundaries of conventional machine design and technology. Visitors will interact with new intelligent operator systems, machine monitoring technologies, can visit the 3D theater and even pan for gold with the stars of Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush. A range of new technologies and services will be unveiled, the most notable of which are ActiveCare Direct and dig assist. Never Over-Dig, Always Over-Deliver Dig assist allows the excavator operator to set job parameters, such as target depth and grade; conduct in-field design, and view job progress in real time, ensuring the work meets exact specifications. Dig assist is the latest addition to the suite of Volvo Assist programs — which also includes compact assist and load assist — providing real-time intelligence to the operator in terms that are easy to understand and directly tied to job quality. Booth visitors will have an opportunity to interact with the

Volvo Assist programs on the Volvo Co-Pilot interface — a scalable, Android-powered tablet computer that was recently named as the “Most Innovative Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Feature” at the 2016 Car HMI — Europe’s leading human-machine interface event. Booth visitors also will get a glimpse of future Volvo Assist co-pilot programs to be rolled out for soil compactors and articulated haulers. Telematics Monitoring Direct From Volvo Volvo will be unveiling ActiveCare Direct — believed to be the industry’s first telematics monitoring service offered at the OEM level and supported through the company’s dealer network. Volvo has built an uptime center with an experienced team of analysts capable of proactively monitoring and reporting on customer fleets throughout the United States and Canada. The service relieves the burden of sorting through vast quantities of available data and delivers thoughtful analysis and practical recommendations to the customer. An in-booth uptime center will be available for visitors to interact with telematics experts and see how the system works. New Machines and Concepts Among the 26 machines on display will be the Volvo A60H, the world’s largest articulated hauler; the EC750E, the latest and largest excavator available from Volvo in North America; never-before-seen wheel loaders; and the HX02, a concept battery-electric, fully autonomous load carrier, making its first public appearance. The show will conclude Volvo’s year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the articulated hauler, showcasing a gold-painted A40G articulated hauler, which will have been recently auctioned at Richie Bros. — with proceeds benefitting SkillsUSA and Skills/Compétences Canada — organizations dedicated to improving the skill level of North America’s workforce. How to Find Us Volvo will have both an indoor (N10036) and an outdoor booth (G3894). Visit the outdoor area to see the latest in compact equipment and attachments; participate in an operator contest on a compact excavator, and visit the stars of Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush for photo opportunities and autographs. The company’s indoor area will feature all the latest equipment and interactive experiences, with new technologies from Volvo CE, as well as sister brands Volvo Trucks, Volvo Financial Services and Volvo Penta. Volvo also will host the latest round of the Construction Climate Challenge, with leading thinkers from business, academia and government discussing how the industry can best address environmental issues. DSC’s base dredges include six different model lines, designed for different basic applications, which are further customized for specific customer requirements.

Louisiana-based DSC Dredge LLC will have its experts available in Central Hall booth #C20523 at ConExpoCon/AGG. With many of DSC’s custom dredge solutions on display, visitors will have the opportunity to discover how DSC’s advanced dredging technology has benefited customers worldwide — and discuss how DSC’s expertise will ultimately result in the exact right dredge for their own unique applications, ultimately boosting their efficiency and lowering their operating costs. DSC believes that every dredge begins with a story. Every dredging application is different, and every dredge operator works under unique conditions. DSC’s dredging solutions are rooted in a number of base models that are then customized to match the customer’s goals. Prior to making any recommendations, the company executes a rigorous process of talking with customers to establish the immediate and long-term application parameters and obtain the necessary information to recommend the right dredge. This information may include factors such as dredging depths, types of materials, distance and elevation to discharge, portability requirements and access to power grids. For more than 20 years, DSC has focused its expertise on the design and manufacture of customized portable cutter suction dredges of all sizes and applications. DSC units are in use throughout the world in construction, environmental, mining, navigational, recreational, restoration and specialty applications. As leaders in the field of dredging solutions — from the simple to the most complicated custom dredges for special applications — DSC strives to understand the distinct

characteristics of every operation’s requirements. Only then will the company recommend a definitive solution. DSC’s base dredges include six different model lines, designed for different basic applications, which are further customized for specific customer requirements. The Marlin Class deep mining dredge, with its underwater pump system and high-torque cutter drive, has been designed as an efficient method for excavating deep mining deposits. The Shark Class cutter suction dredge is a tough, yet portable design, most commonly used in the sand and aggregate production arena. Often called the contractor’s “dream machine,” the Barracuda Class dredge features a swinging-ladder design, used most often in waterway maintenance and lake revitalization projects. DSC’s Moray Class conventional/swinging-ladder dredge was designed around the concept of a versatile design in a smaller portable package that is unmatched in the industry, and often used in environmental cleanup and irrigation applications. Rounding out the line are the Badger Class and the Wolverine Class dredges, designed for the contractor, with compact, yet portable designs that are fully functional by one operator. Several of the DSC models are available with electric power for operations requiring sustainable attributes. DSC Dredge LLC advances the engineering, automation, manufacturing and quality of cutter suction and underwater pump mining dredges. The company operates from three major manufacturing facilities located in Reserve, La., Poplarville, Miss., and Greenbush, Mich. For more information, visit www.dscdredge.com.

Honda Power Touts Numerous Power Generation Products

The company’s newest product introductions — the EB2800i Industrial Series and EG2800i Economy Series generators expand the company’s portable power offering for light construction and home use applications, respectively, delivering more of what Honda generator customers have come to expect: quiet operation, high-quality power, fuel efficiency, and long run times in a lightweight package, according to the manufacturer.

At ConExpo-Con/AGG 2017, the Honda Power Equipment team will showcase a number of its power products for commercial applications at its booth #B7404. Front and center at this international event dedicated to the construction industry will be the Honda comprehensive line of generators — models providing smooth, dependable power for construction, rental, emergency and recreation see CONEXPO page 88

Strategies for Seeing Everything You Must See at ConExpo By Jeff Winke CEG CORRESPONDENT

ConExpo can be a bit overwhelming. It is, after all, the largest construction trade show in North America, which means everything to do with construction will be on display. It is the best place to see everything in a category of interest, plus everything outside of it. New products and innovations will be on display, as will the solid, tried-and-true products, most likely displayed in their Sunday best. The trade show booths and displays will be competing for visitor attention. If there’s a way to give a 100-ton (90.7 t) bulldozer glitz, glitter and glamor, there’s likely a manufacturer doing it. Given the show’s enormity and the sensory overload to be experienced, attending ConExpo should not be done without a plan. In the same spirit, one probably doesn’t wish to be dropped off at the front door of the Mall of America, the biggest shopping center in the United States, with a need to find a men’s casual shirt. There are likely many choices among the 4.8 million sq. ft. (4.45 million sq m) of retail space, but it definitely would help to have a couple stores in mind. The strategy for seeing everything you must see at ConExpo is to prepare with a plan ahead of time and accept from the start that it is impractical and unreasonable to expect to see every booth at the show. The best plan for attending ConExpo should include: appointments, exhibit space map, a daily schedule and a checklist. Arrange Appointments Ahead of Time ConExpo is a good event to create new business relationships with suppliers and other contractors; solidify existing relationships with manufacturers, dealers, project owners or other contractors you’ve worked with in the past; and research new opportunities for expanding skills, services and markets. Arrange appointment times with these key contacts in advance of the show. If a “stop by the booth any time” or “I’ll be around, we’ll

ConExpo is the largest construction trade show in North America, which means everything to do with construction will be on display.

bump into each other” is given, insist on a specific time and location to ensure a productive meeting. Get their mobile number and text them before you arrive: “Heading to our meeting spot now. Looking forward to seeing you in 20 minutes.” When arranging an appointment, it is important to answer the “what’s in it for me” question they will be thinking to ensure they are committed to the meeting. The value being brought to the meeting might be a possible sale or demo opportunity, an industry-connected contractor contact, or information/education about markets that can help them be more effective. Map of Exhibitor Space The Las Vegas Convention Center is divided into three halls: North, Central and South. Plus,

there are outdoor exhibits in the ample parking lot in front of the convention center. Sort the “must see” list according to exhibitor space to make it time effective and easier to navigate. Study the map to figure out where everything is in relation to each other. Locate the lavatories as well and build visits into your schedule so to not be stuck on a far end of a hall when nature calls. Fortunately, ConExpo groups similar vendors close together so if compare-contrast of certain products is an objective, it will be easy to accomplish. Schedule the Day With scheduled appointments, industry training sessions, new exhibiting companies to explore, and breaks to process and organize notes, the day will benefit from a

schedule that keeps everything on track. Put the schedule on paper or a notecard as well as on a smartphone. It can be easier to glance at a notecard rather than checking an iPhone or tablet while rushing through a busy exhibit hall or talking with someone at a booth. The schedule is the guardrail that keeps things moving in the right direction and prevents offroad excursions. It is helpful and also can be useful as an excuse should there be a need to break away from a meeting that’s taken too long (“Sorry…I need to go. I just checked my schedule and I’m due at another meeting.”). Create a Checklist The show is huge, there’s a lot to see and old friends and colleagues will pop up and be an unanticipat-

ed surprise. The exhibits will be interesting, enticing and difficult to pass. Construction contractors are innately curious which makes it all the more difficult to walk through an exhibit hall filled with new technology and innovative machines without stopping to check things out. To stay focused, create a checklist of the “must see” and “want to see” exhibitors and events. To be successful at seeing everything you must see at ConExpo, consult the checklist in the morning, mid-day and in the evening. The checklist is the master mission — the ultimate ‘To Do List’ for attending the big show. The goal is to end the time at ConExpo with everything on the must see list checked off or crossed off, and if lucky, a number of the want to sees checked off as well. see CONEXPO page 20

applications. All Honda generators are powered by advanced Honda four-stroke engines and incorporate technology that make Honda generators among the world’s quietest. All Honda generator models meet 50 state exhaust evaporative regulations. The company’s newest product introductions — the EB2800i Industrial Series and EG2800i Economy Series generators — will be highlights at this year’s show. The allnew open frame, inverter-equipped Honda EB2800i and EG2800i models expand the company’s portable power offering for light construction and home use applications, respectively, delivering more of what Honda generator customers have come to expect: quiet operation, high-quality power, fuel efficiency, and long run times in a lightweight package, according to the manufacturer. Honda Power Equipment also will have its comprehensive line of water pumps on display at this year’s ConExpoCon/AGG — portable, powerful models designed for a wide variety of heavy-duty construction, agricultural and rental applications. The product line consists of rugged, easy-touse models in four different categories — the gasoline-powered de-watering, trash, multi-purpose and electric submersible series. While Honda general purpose de-watering pumps are designed for varying applications and typical water removal, Honda also produces a number of pumps for specialty applications. For example, Honda trash pumps are used for quick clean out when pumping water contaminated with larger debris (including stones and other solid materials up to 11/16 in. in diameter). Honda diaphragm pumps provide dry pumping capability, and Honda stainless steel, electric submersible pumps are a quality option for a wide range of residential and commercial applications. Legacy Tension Fabric Buildings Feature Structural Steel Frame

industries, including commodity storage, warehousing, recreational facilities, event centers, aviation, mining, recycling and many more. Legacy fabric buildings utilize a durable rigid frame in place of the hollow-tube, open web truss “hoop” framing traditionally used for fabric structures. The strength of the structural steel frame provides several engineering advantages, most notably the ability to easily customize buildings to the exact width, length and height required. In addition to long clear spans, the buildings have straight sidewalls that maximize the useable square footage inside the structure. The design allows for much more structural flexibility than traditional fabric structures, including the ability to add lean-tos, mezzanines, sidewall doors and more. The structures also are engineered to provide desired overhangs or handle additional loads for items such as sprinklers and conveyors. Unlike hollow tube steel, Legacy’s solid structural steel Ibeams are not vulnerable to unseen corrosion originating inside a tube. Additionally, there are multiple coating options available for all steel components, including hot dip galvanizing, primer and powder coat paint. Legacy buildings feature high-quality fabric roofs that eliminate the corrosion concerns associated with metal-constructed facilities. A wide variety of polyethylene and PVC fabrics are available. The durable fabric allows natural light to permeate the structure during daytime hours, while insulation and liners can be added to meet energy codes or satisfy customer specifications, according to the manufacturer. Installation is up to three times faster than with conventional buildings, and the design can be adjusted for stationary or portable applications. Sidewalls can be customized and built with any desired material — including steel, concrete or stone — and then easily lined with fabric to prevent corrosion to the interior, or to create a seamless look for occupied buildings. Legacy steel components and fabric covers are backed by a comprehensive warranty. Legacy Building Solutions offers assistance from concept to completion, including renderings, foundation design, installation and project management. To date, Legacy’s inhouse, professional installation crews have constructed more than 35 million sq. ft. of fabric buildings., Legacy maintains ISO 9001:2008 and CSA A660-10 certification. SDLG Expands Range With Compact Wheel Loader Debut Legacy fabric buildings utilize a durable rigid frame in place of the hollow-tube, open web truss “hoop” framing traditionally used for fabric structures. The strength of the structural steel frame provides several engineering advantages, most notably the ability to easily customize buildings to the exact width, length and height required.

Combining rigid-frame engineering with the proven benefits of tension fabric membranes, Legacy Building Solutions offers superior quality fabric structures that are fully customizable. This design concept provides a high level of flexibility for a wide array of building applications and

SDLG will debut a new compact wheel loader — the SDLG L918F — at ConExpo 2017. The company will occupy Gold Lot Booth G3890, an outdoor booth at the show. Several experts will be on hand to discuss the new machine and how it fits into the brand’s overall North American strategy. The move to expand the company’s product range comes on the heels of its successful launch into North America. SDLG has seen significant growth in terms of its dealer network and customer base over the past few years, as well as the introduction of its Tier IV Final machines in 2016. The L918F will be SDLG’s fifth wheel loader offering in North America and it will feature a 1.0 cu. yd. (.76 cu m)

bucket capacity mounted to a skid steer style coupler, placing it in the compact loader category but with the versatility of skid steer style attachments. In addition, the unit will have an optional 1.3 cu. yd. (1 cu m) bucket with wheel loader ISO coupler. The machine will compete with large skid steer loaders, providing the same bucket capacity but with increased maneuverability and operator comfort. Additionally, the compact loader’s steering mechanism will cause less damage to job site grounds when compared with a skid steer loader. Al Quinn, director of SDLG North America, said customer demand is the driving force behind introducing the new machine, with several companies asking SDLG dealers for a compact, value loader alternative for many current skid steer loader applications. He explained that the new model was part of the brand’s long-term strategy. “This new launch demonstrates the maturation of SDLG in the North American market,” Quinn said. “It’s a milestone. We have tested the concept of offering robust, reliable, value machines into the region and we’re now confident that the strategy works. SDLG will continue to expand and offer more products over the coming years that are similarly positioned in the marketplace.” Compact and Versatile The L918F excels in a variety of applications, including landscaping, work in stone and mulch yards, snow removal, and waste and recycling. Like other SDLG loaders, it’s ideal for applications that are seasonal or don’t require lots of operating hours. The machine also is perfect for owners that can find value in a reliable, low-cost loader backed by a 12month, 2,000-hour warranty, with extended warranties available. SDLG loaders serve as a viable alternative to used, premium machines, and can often provide a lower total cost of ownership. The L918F features: • A Deutz Tier IV Final engine (no DPF filter) • Dry disc brakes • 2 speed countershaft transmission • A 1.0 cu. yd. SSL bucket capacity w/ in-cab coupler pin control. Optional 1.3 cu. yd. ISO/GP bucket capacity also will be offered • An operating weight of 14,990 lbs. (6,800 kg) • A rated load limit of 2,200 lbs. (998 kg) • A maximum breakout force of 112,240 lbf with a standard boom • A compact body that is only 9 ft. 7 in. tall and 6 ft. 8 in. (2.9 by 2 m) wide Also at SDLG’s booth for ConExpo 2017 will be the L948F, a 3.0 cu yd. (2.3 cu m) capacity Tier IV Final wheel loader that was introduced in June 2016. Along with a more environmentally sensitive engine, SDLG’s Tier IV Final machines offer several other improvements that include passive regeneration, cab enhancements, improved serviceability, improved operator controls, and improved heating and air conditioning for operator comfort.

SDLG will debut a new compact wheel loader — the SDLG L918F. The company will occupy Gold Lot Booth G3890, an outdoor booth at the show.
