Terex Cranes Hosts 2007 Open House in Waverly, Iowa Terex Cranes Waverly hosted the 2007 Terex Crane Open House at the company’s facility in Waverly, Iowa, Aug. 23. The facility is located at 106 12th Street Southeast. The open house included a guided plant tour that provided a comprehensive overview of the Terex Cranes Waverly manufacturing operation . Many new aspects of manufacturing operation were presented by Terex team members. Among the most notable was the heart of the plant — the Nerve Center. Serving as a visual monitor of plant’s activity, it facilitates faster communications and problem identification. Special attention was drawn to the evolution of the Andon system at Waverly, which allows visual monitoring and problem signaling ensuring plant’s ability to attain desired product quality. Finally, a completely transformed RTB production line demonstrated the impact of newly implemented systems and processes at work. Additionally, the open house featured a parade of cranes. The parade showcased Terex’s newest additions, such as the BT 3671, the HC 230 crawler, and the RT1120. The parade debuted the Terex-Comedil selferecting crane and included a demonstration of this machine. The Terex-Demag team and the AC140 made a special guest appearance in the parade.

These workers are applying the Terex name to a crane boom.

The new TerexAmerican HC 230 crawler crane was on display and attracted a lot of interest. Tool tray innovations make having every tool accessible for each workstation.

Terex implements a new concept in production facilities, which consists of being more organized, using brighter lights and a polished floor and streamlining production modeled after Toyota car manufacturing. 10

U.S. Army Deploys Grove RT in Germany

The 75 ton (68 t) capacity RT875E has a four-section main boom of 128 ft. (39 m) and a maximum tip height of 233 ft. (7 m), when configured with a jib extension.

A Grove rough-terrain crane is working on a large-scale construction project at one of the biggest U.S. military training areas outside the U.S. The RT875E crane is on site at the Efficient Basing-Grafenwoehr facility, in the town of Grafenwoehr in eastern Bavaria, Germany. It will perform a wide range of lifting duties over a 16-month period. It is currently assembling prefabricated elements for 835 houses on the new Netzaberg Housing Area. The RT875E is owned by rental company Wiesbauer, based in Bietigheim-Bissingen, and is working for local contractor Zapf. Michael Begemann, crane operator of Wiesbauer, said the RT875E’s best features are its ease of control and ability to work steadily in any conditions. “Our main reason for choosing the RT875E on this job was its ability to move quickly between lifts. Its off-road mobility is excellent,” Begemann said. “It is also incredibly easy to operate, even when lifting loads of up to 20 [metric] tons.” The 75 ton (68 t) capacity RT875E combines powerful lifting ability with increased reach. It has a four-section main boom of 128 ft. (39 m)

and a maximum tip height of 233 ft. (71 m), when configured with a jib extension. The crane’s features include a removable counterweight, four main steering modes, and ergonomically designed controls. It has an E series cab, which optimizes operator comfort and productivity and can be tilted to 20 degrees. Outriggers adjust in both vertical and horizontal directions. Grafenwoehr currently houses the 7th Army Training Command, a unit that provides testing and training for military apparatus used by U.S. and NATO forces. To consolidate its command and control headquarters, the United States Army Europe is moving 3,500 soldiers and their families from across Europe to this new installation. This requires the renovation of existing facilities and the construction of new homes. When complete, the Netzaberg Housing area will contain an elementary and middle school, a chapel, a child development center, a youth services center, sports fields and a small shop. 22

New Twin Span Bridge to Allow Increased Traffic Flow Lifting and driving concrete piling and erecting concrete girders and placing pre-cast caps are the main uses of the cranes on the construction site. “Between 20 and 25 barges are in the water, on which all the ringers and crawlers with Boh Bros., are located,” Schexnayder continued. “The remaining barges are used to shuttle cement trucks and other equipment to and from the work area. Hauling using the barges slows down the process. It adds a whole other element to delivering. Typically you just drive up to the site and deliver; now it has to be hauled to the site on a barge.” At the end of August, the first visible signs of construction were evident as Boh Bros. began driving test piles. By the end of autumn 13 test piles will be driven to depths between 103 and 119 feet (31.3 to 36.2 m), the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) said. Traylor/Kiewit/Massmann Joint Venture is constructing the 80ft. (24.3 m) high-rise section of the bridge. Scott Armstrong, project manager with Traylor/Kiewit/Massman Joint Venture, explained that their cranes

Well into the first year of construction on the Interstate 10 Twin Span Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana, the $803 million project remains on schedule. Boh Bros. Construction Co. won the first $379 million contract to build the level section of the bridge as well as the eastbound approaches on each end of the bridge, all of which are expected to be completed by December 2009. The second phase, which will be the completion of the bridge, should be finished two years later. Cranes owned or rented by Boh Bros. that are being put into use on the project include: two American 5300s, 70 ton (63.5 t); two Manitowoc 4100s, 230 ton (208 t); three Manitowoc 4100, 230 ton ringers; and a Manitowoc 4600, 230 ton ringer. “The cranes that are being used were chosen because they can lift a lot for their size,” said G.J. Schexnayder, project manager of Boh Bros. Construction Co. of New Orleans. “These are the cranes we typically use.” Lifting and driving concrete piling, erecting concrete girders and placing pre-cast clamps are the main uses of the cranes.

were chosen based on availability and include Manitowoc, American and Tyrex cranes ranging in size from a Manitowoc 7000 to a Tyrex 8c80. The Manitowoc 7000 is a 350- ton (317.5 t) crane that is being used for pile driving. The Manitowoc 4100 is a 250-ton (226 t) crane used to place footings. The American 9299 is a 200-ton (181 t) crane that is used to install walls, and a Manitowoc Triple7 is a 140-ton (127 t) crane that is being used to install pier caps. Not all of Traylor/Kiewit/Massman Joint Venture’s cranes are in use yet, Armstrong explained, so waiting for the right piece of the project to begin are a 200-ton (181 t) Derik and a 175-ton (158 t) Manitowoc. Currently crews of between 65 and 75 people are pile-driving permanent piles and setting the pre-cast caps. Concrete decks also are being formed and poured in place. The existing bridge connects New Orleans with its suburb of Slidell, a community of approximately 25,000 located on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The new twin span bridge will replace the existing 5.5-mi. (8.8 km) long bridge that was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina

two years ago. The storm knocked many of the bridge’s concrete segments into the lake along with 260-ton (235 t) spans of the concrete bridge. Other sections of the bridge were shifted out of place by the storm by as much as 5 ft. (1.5 m). Repair crews used undamaged spans from the westbound bridge to patch the eastbound bridge, which was converted temporarily to two-way traffic. That left approximately 1 mi. of the westbound roadway missing, which was repaired and filled with metal trusses and decking, according to LaDOTD. Because of the severity of the damage to the bridge, fixing it was not an option, according to LaDOTD. The new bridge is being built 300 ft. (91.4 m) to the east of the current bridge. The project is funded solely with federal dollars and is the largest public works project in the history of Louisiana, LaDOTD said. With an elevation of 30 ft. (9.1m), the new bridge will be 21 ft. (6.4 m) higher than the existing bridge. It also will have an 80-ft. (24.3m) high-rise section near the Slidell side to allow marine traffic. The increased elevation will allow the bridge to withstand a much higher storm surge, LaDOTD said.

Commuters passing by on the old bridges get a look at the work being done on the new ones. 6

The new twin span bridges will replace the existing 5.5-mi. (8.8 km) bridge that were severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Pre-cast/pre-stressed is a major component of this project, a significant change from the old bridge’s 54-in. (137-cm) concrete cylinder piles. Span length also has been increased with the new structure. Nearly 2,000 square pre-stressed piles, averaging 102 ft. (31 m) long, will be used, along with 1,900 BT-78 girders that are approximately 135 ft. (41 m) long. Seven different pre-cast cap configurations, totaling 372, will be used. Decks will be cast-in-place, with Gulf Coast Pre-Stress and Lafarge Concrete supplying Boh Bros., LaDOTD said. Volkert Construction Services of New Orleans is providing engineering and inspection services in support of the LaDOTD. CQ

The new bridge was designed with reinforced concrete walls to increase the storm surge resistance and minimize the effects of a barge collision. The bridge also will include 36-in. (91.4 cm) square piles, bent caps, waterline footings, columns and pier caps, BT-78 pre-cast concrete girders, structural steel main spans and a poured-in-place deck. An additional lane will be added in each direction, allowing for a 50 percent increase in traffic volume on the new bridge. Prestorm traffic numbers indicate that more than 55,000 vehicles travel the bridge each day, LaDOTD said. The 60-ft. (18.2 m) width of each span will include three 12-ft. (3.6 m) lanes and two 12-ft. shoulders on each side.

Between 20 and 25 barges are in the water, on which all the ringers and crawlers are located. 8
