filled crates in metal boxes for their trip. These included the entire collection exhibited in the old museum and many pieces kept in storerooms on the Acropolis, not exhibited due to lack of space. When winds were stronger than 24 mph or the humidity was too high, no transfers were attempted. Unexpected Discovery During preliminary work on the museum the remains of a third century B.C. to seventh century A.D. section of the city were discovered, delaying considerably the commencement of construction work on the site. Furthermore various minor archaeological operations as well as expropriation procedures of third parties’ property delayed the project for about a year, Pakas noted. The archaeological remains have been integrated into the museum and can be observed through its glass floors. CQ

Tired of the same old dinner spots? Dinner in the Sky can lift you above and beyond the run-of-the mill dining experience.

Benjifun Dishes Out Adventure crane so I could jump any time I wanted. “From bungee jumping, we moved into special events with cranes,” he continued. “Our company, Benjifun, was doing a lot of extreme crane stuff — death riding, vampire jump, all kinds of things. We had a concept, Sky-Watch, where a big platform would be lifted up, giving people a fantastic view. Someone on the platform said, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to eat up here’ and we thought about it and came up with Dinner in the Sky.” Kerkhofs and his company put the idea into practice two years ago, with an inaugural dinner in Brussels. “The press came to the event,” Kerkhofs said, “and the reaction was amazing. It was the beginning of going worldwide for us.” Because Dinner in the Sky has gone worldwide, they do not own the cranes for the events, but rent them at their venues. Although they have

On an early April morning, Stefan Kerkhofs, CEO of Dinner in the Sky, is looking forward to a day at a Las Vegas expo. There, his company will be showing off the many crane-related forms of entertainment they can offer, and he has hopes that one of the guests of honor at the event, Richard Branson, will stop by and try one out. Of course, not everyone considers cranes a venue for fun, but the Belgium-based company has been dishing out adventure via crane for quite a while. “Really,” said Kerkhofs, “the idea started when I was a child. My parents owned a crane company, so I was always around the cranes. Then about 17 years ago we got a request from a company in France about bungee jumping. I tried it myself and it enjoyed it so much, I bought a

no preference as to the brand of crane, they do require cranes from 120 to 220 tons (109 to 199 t) for their purposes. The company builds the specialized tables, which can seat up to 24 people. The tables weigh 7 to 8 tons. When asked about safely balancing a group of 24 diners, plus the chef and assistants safely, Kerkhofs said, “It was not difficult, finding the balance. We have a company, TEV, an inspection company. They do the inspections of rides in amusements parks all over. They do all our calculations and they did them for different scenarios.” “For example, every seat is [330 pounds]. TEV balanced them with every seat filled, then with the seats on just one side filled, and the balance was still great,” said Kerkhofs. Dinner in the Sky has gone all over the world, but so far, Kerkhofs feels that Capetown, South Africa, is his favorite venue. They do breakfast, lunch and dinner in the sky there every day, and the views are just beautiful. But today, Kerkhofs said, “We are in Las Vegas, one of the biggest, most fun cities in the world. I am enjoying it very much and can’t wait to show our products here.” For more information, visit www.dinnerinthesky.com. CQ

(L-R): Craig Rockwell, Rockwell Construction; Sharoyn Ringer, Manitowoc Crane Care; Glen Tellock, The Manitowoc Company; Kevin Flohr, Manitowoc Cranes; Woody Rockwell, Rockwell Construction and Dave Hardin, Manitowoc Crane Care, cut the ribbon on the new Shady Grove facility.

Manitowoc Opens Doors at New Shady Grove Location Manitowoc Crane Care, Manitowoc’s customer support division, officially dedicated its new 37,000 sq. ft. quarters on March 31, 2008, in Shady Grove, Pa. The building is home to more than 100 Manitowoc Crane Care employees who are responsible for aftermarket support. The facility is also the Center of Excellence for the Grove, Potain and National Crane brands for both North and South America. “These new quarters represent a significant investment in facilities and people,” said Dave Hardin, vice president of Manitowoc Crane Care in the Americas. “They demonstrates the value that Manitowoc puts on supporting its cranes and more importantly, its customers. The expansion paves the way for the future growth of our business throughout the Americas.” The new facility houses Manitowoc Crane Care’s Rapid Response Teams. These teams of experts are responsible for helping customers whenever they need any type of aftermarket support, replacement parts, training or technical service. They communicate with distributors and customers to help diagnose problems or facilitate parts orders. This new facility also is home to Manitowoc Crane Care’s technical

publication department for the many different crane products built in Shady Grove. Each year, Manitowoc Crane Care produces and publishes thousands of technical publications and manuals that provide information to facilitate the repair of cranes in the field and detail proper crane operation. Training is an important initiative for Manitowoc Crane Care. In the new quarters, space for training is more than doubled. Each year, Manitowoc Crane Care provides hands-on and E-training to distributors, customers and Crane Care technicians on specific crane models or subsystems. Manitowoc Crane Care will train more than 1,300 people this year at Shady Grove. In addition to the new Shady Grove location, Manitowoc has similar contact centers in Manitowoc, Wis.; Decines, France; Wilhelmshaven, Germany and Zhangjiagang, China. “We strive to provide our customers with access to Manitowoc Crane Care experts 24/7,” said Larry Bryce, executive vice president of Manitowoc Crane Care. “This means that no matter where you are in the world and no matter what time zone you are in, you can get technical advice and parts support from Manitowoc Crane Care.” CQ 18

Kobelco SL6000 Crawler Debuts on Las Vegas Stage

Cranes, Cranes and…More Cranes in Stock!!

The Kobelco SL6000 600-ton (544 t) crawler crane made its North American debut at the ConExpo/Con-AGG 2008 show. The SL6000 is a new model addition, at the top end of Kobelco’s comprehensive range of crawler cranes. The SL6000 features 3 different configurations: • Standard Crane — 276-ft. (84 m) maximum standard main boom, 354-ft. (108 m) maximum long boom and a luffer option of 197-ft. (60 m) main boom plus 236-ft. (72 m) luffing jib. • Heavy Lift Crane (which includes an additional Mast) — 276-ft. maximum standard main boom, 354-ft. maximum long boom and a luffer option of 217-ft. (66 m) main boom plus 236-ft. luffing jib. • Super Heavy Lift Crane (which includes HL Mast and an additional 551,400 lbs. (250,111 kg) of palette counterweight) — 276-ft. maximum standard boom, 413-ft. (126 m) maximum long boom and a luffer option of 276-ft. main boom plus 276 ft. of luffing jib. The 1,082 sq. ft. (100 sq m) footprint of the SL6000 gives it stability throughout the full 360-degree rotation, according to the manufacturer. The SL6000 is powered by a Tier III compliant — Hino E13C-UV, 429-hp (320 kW) diesel engine with six variabledisplacement hydraulic pumps. As with all the Kobelco cranes, the SL6000 can be broken down into easily-transportable sub-assemblies. The largest individual part being the 9 ft. 10 in. (3 m) wide car-body and upper-structure assembly weighing 141,000 lbs. (63,956 kg), which itself can be broken down to 91,100 lbs. (41,322 kg) for the upper structure and 49,900 lbs. (22,634 kg) for the car-body with a Quick-connection system. By removing the mast assembly with an “easy-attachment” system, it can be further reduced to 70,600 lbs. (32,024 kg). Each fully-assembled crawler-track assembly weighs 88,200 lbs. (40,007 kg), and the boom and jib sections can be “nested” for transportation. Main winch, auxiliary winch (and optional luffing jib winch) are conveniently located in the lower boom, reducing the transportation weight of the base machine. In order to reduce the assembly time and to further reduce the transportation weight of the base machine, Kobelco designed the SL6000 with the boom winch mounted on the mast and with the boom wire rope already reeved through the sheaves of the upper and lower spreader. Assembly on site can be completed in a two to four days depending on the configuration.

Grove Introduces GMK5115 All-Terrain Crane at ConExpo Manitowoc’s new Grove GMK5115 all-terrain crane made its first North American appearance at ConExpo 2008. The five-axle crane offers a maximum capacity of 115 tons (104 t) in the United States. David Birkhauser, senior vice president sales for Manitowoc, Americas, said the crane offers customers strength and flexibility. “The GMK5115 combines great reach with the strongest load chart in its class,” he said. “This crane is also about flexibility — whether it’s on-site or on the road. The crane is perfectly suited to rental fleets and with Grove’s strong reputation in the five-axle class; we feel it is guaranteed success in the North American market.” The GMK5115 has a 197 ft. (60 m) seven-section main boom that features Grove’s Megaform boom and Twin-Lock pinning system. Tip heights of up to 272 ft. (83 m) are available with the hydraulic luffing bifold swingaway that includes an 11 ft. (3.3 m) heavy-duty jib for more

demanding lift duties. As with many Grove all-terrain cranes, users can operate the GMK5115 as either a “Taxi” crane for mobility or a “Maxi” crane for larger lifts. In “Taxi” mode, the crane can travel in a variety of configurations depending on local roading requirements. The crane can be reduced to a gross vehicle weight of less than 106,000 lbs. (48,080 kg), which corresponds to less than 22,000 lbs. (9,779 kg) per axle. Other features on the GMK5115 include: Megatrak suspension, ECOS electronic control and all-wheel steer. The crane is equipped with Grove’s carrier cab that launched in 2006 and has five outrigger settings for maximum flexibility on-site. With its 197-ft. boom, the GMK5115 is well suited to applications that require lifts more than 164 ft. (50 m) — and especially the erection of Potain tower cranes, according to the manufacturer.

Manitowoc’s Grove GMK5115 all-terrain crane offers a maximum capacity of 115 tons (104 t). 20

The 3D Lift Plan requires no CAD programs, extensive updates or training, and it’s accessible from any computer location.

Link-Belt’s Web-Based 3-D Lift Plan Tool Trims Training Time feature four languages, tandem picks and various other rigging and block configurations. Link-Belt commissioned A1A software, Jacksonville, Fla., to develop 3-D Lift Plan. For more information, visit www.linkbelt.com.

Link-Belt’s Web-based 3-D Lift Plan tool gives Link-Belt crane owners accurate, timely 3-D lift planning capability anywhere in the world, 24/7. The 3-D Lift Plan tool is available through Link-Belt Preferred, Link-Belt’s customer support program. The 3-D Lift Plan requires no CAD programs, extensive updates or training. It’s accessible from any computer location and it offers safe, secure storage of any lift plan, complete with metric or English units, load and rigging data and job site obstructions. During the simulation, the actual lift is viewed with high quality 3-D graphics that create detailed job sites complete with views of changing machine configurations, load charts, landscape and site obstruction items. Once a plan is set, an engineer-scale lift plan, complete with notes and logos can be printed from any angle to document the lift plan. In recent years Link-Belt found, through Voice of the Customer (VOC) investigations of lift planning programs, not only that users wanted one bucket in which to put all makes of their cranes, but also it must be current information and available at all branch and job site locations, 24/7. It must be 3-D graphically accurate, printable with documentation and exportable to a CAD program. The new 3-D Lift Plan application fulfills all of these objectives and more, according to the manufacturer. Other industry lift planning programs are CD-based and must be manually and individually updated with new features and data at each location. They generally require software purchases and weeks of long training. And they generally focus on only one manufacturer’s models. 3-D Lift Plan is updated online 24/7 as needed. 3DLiftPlan.com will

Olympic-Sized Relay…

Tower Cranes Aid Transfer of Acropolis Antiquities the sacred building. With more than 80 of the sculptures from the frieze still held by the British Museum in London, the missing sections will be represented by plaster casts until the originals return to Greece. Prime contractor AKTOR S.A., based in Athens, Greece, handled both the construction of the museum and the subsequent transfer of antiquities. The construction contract was approximately $80 million and the transfer contract was approximately $2 million. The state provided funding, according to Leonidas Pakas, project manager of AKTOR S.A. “During construction an average of 80 to 100 persons worked on-site, with peaks that reached 200,” Pakas added. Work began on the museum in January 2005 and was almost complete as of March 2008. The 322,917-sq.-ft. (30,000 sq m) structure will

A section of a sacred marble frieze sculpted by Phidias 2,500 years ago was moved last October from its original home on the Parthenon, perched high on the Acropolis, Athens’s rocky citadel. It was the first of numerous priceless artifacts transferred to a nearby modernistic concrete and glass museum. The artifacts’ journey involved a relay performed by three tower cranes. The new museum is a three-story structure due to open at the end of 2008. Designed by architects Bernard Tschumi and Michael Fotiadis, its prime attraction will be the glass-walled top floor, which will hold a fullsized re-creation of the upper part of the Parthenon — its sculptured frieze displayed as it was originally mounted just under the roofline of

the first was an EC180 that was 114.8 ft. (35 m) high with a 164-ft. (50 m) boom and 3.5-ton (3.2 t) capacity and the second was an EC280 114.8 ft. (35 m) high with a 229-ft. (70 m) boom and 3.8-ton (3.5 t) capacity. The third crane was a Potain 196.8-ft. (60 m) high with a 198.6ft. (60 m) boom and 3.3-ton (3 t) capacity. display much more than the old museum, including many items previously unseen by the public. The original museum, built in the 19th century, will probably house exhibits on excavation work and conservation of the site. Transferring the Artifacts Transfer operations began on Oct. l4, 2007, just before 9:30 a.m., with the moving of a section of the frieze from the north side of the Parthenon. The frieze depicts a religious procession featuring more than 350 human figures and 250 animals. The first piece weighed more than 2 tons (1.8 t), and was in its new home some 1,312 ft. (400 m) away in a little less than two hours. It was a delicate task that took nearly three months to complete. The trio of cranes performing the job included two Liebherr models:
