lifted up out of the water and swung out over a dock area where maintenance can be performed. But at least once a year, each boat must be picked and carried 100 to 200 ft. (30.5 to 61 m) to be placed in winter storage. “The pick and carry capability of the Link-Belt was one of the most important features the Coast Guard Academy had for buying requirements,” said Marc Varricchione of Wood’s CRW. The Link-Belt RTC8065 Series II is ideal for the crew at the academy’s harbor. When lifting boats up out of the water, the outriggers are put in place to make the pick feasible and if the boat needs to be transported, the rubber-tired feature of the crane comes into play for transportation. One of the biggest appeals that the academy had for this particular Link-Belt rough-terrain crane was its size and turning radius. There is very little space between the edge of the dock that the crane works from to pick up the boats and a maintenance building that sits less than 100 ft. from the edge of the dock. This makes maneuverability an important necessity to the crane.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which has its own harbor with a fleet of both sailboats, motorized boats and the U.S. Coast Guard competition-ready sailing yacht, purchased a new Link-Belt RTC8065 Series II 65-ton (59 t) telescopic boom rough-terrain crane from Wood’s CRW. The crane features 115 ft. (35 m) of boom, two drums, block and ball, a flat deck design and safety reels. This crane was purchased specifically to lift each Coast Guard vessel out of the water either for periodic maintenance or for winter storage. The crane was delivered in January 2013 and replaced an aging P & H crane, which had been in service for more than 20 years. Some of these vessels are very challenging to move. There are sailboats as long as 44-ft. (13.4 m) that have a 9.5-ft. (2.9 m) keel, masts that are approximately 70 ft. (21 m) in height and can weigh up to 27,000 lbs. (12,247 kg). Some of the smaller boats range down to 32 ft. (9.7 m) in length and weigh as little as 9,000 lbs. (4,082 kg). The crew that maintains and operates the harbor are responsible for approximately 40 boats. Most of the time these boats are simply being

Link-Belt’s All-Wheel Steer Gives Crane Maximum Steering Ability

The Link-Belt is equipped with all-wheel steer, which gives the crane maximum steering ability in a minimum amount of space. It can almost turn 360 degrees in its own footprint. According to Jim Hartley, one of the crane operators, “This crane does a very nice job fitting our needs. Its maneuverability far exceeds what I had to work with previously. It has a turning radius of only 24 feet. The controls are set up in a way that really gives me a sense of confidence while operating the crane. From a selfish viewpoint, I really love the cab. Starting with the dramatically improved visibility; it has a curved glass windshield. Basically, the windshield and ceiling of the cab are made of one continuous piece of glass. So there is nothing there to block your view. Also, the cab features air conditioning, which our old crane certainly did not have.” According to Allen Kruger, waterfront director, “As a team we are extremely pleased with this machine. When we decided to make the purchase the operators and staff spec’d out exactly what they were looking

The marine science vessel receives routine maintenance. One of the functions of the harbor crew is to remove the mast when the boat is taken out for maintenance or storage and to reinstall it afterwards using the crane. The crane operator has to demonstrate extreme skill to work the controls in such a way that the crew can line up the bolts for the mast and reattach it to the boat.
for to best suit their needs and this Link-Belt is certainly meeting all of that criteria. Wood’s CRW has worked closely with us throughout the entire process, even providing us with a crane on a short term basis, between the time when our old crane was taken out of commission and the new crane being delivered. Marc Varricchione, our representative with Wood’s CRW, the dealership that sold the machine to us, has made sure that everything has gone very smoothly; delivery, setup, training of our people, and basically making sure that all of our needs have been satisfied.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Link-Belt 298 Crane Logs 12,000 Hours at East Side Access Job A Link-Belt 250 ton (226.79 t) 298 HSL lattice crawler crane has logged nearly 12,000 hours at the East Side Access job site located in the Queens borough of New York City. The project will connect four tunnels running under the East River from Harold Interlocking in Queens, N.Y, west, to a new terminal located directly below the existing Grand
This led to the 12,000 hours of logged time over a 22 month period. The Link-Belt 298 proved to be a reliable rig during its constant use at the job site, according to the company. The crane lowers ventilation tubing, additional tracks for the Herrenknecht, pre-cast liner segments and electrical pipelines as much as 70 ft. (21.3 m) below ground. Some of the largest picks required of the 298 HSL came at the conclusion of the tunnel boring process when 110,000 lb. (49,895.2 kg) lifts were required. Using a five-part line, the crew and operator pulled out the 110,000 lb. (49,895.2 kg) trailing gear and a 98,000 lb. (44,452.1 kg) lift of duct work that swung 230 degrees for loading once at ground level. The crew replaced the 1.1 in. (2.8 cm) auxiliary hoist line at 10,000 hours as a preventative measure. The crane was inspected every three months by the crew and also by the New York City Department of Buildings. The three companies that compose G.T.F. are Granite Construction in Watsonville, Calif.; Traylor Brothers in Evansville, Ind.; and Frontier-Kemper in Evansville, Ind. The three companies were contracted to build the $730 million Queens Bored Tunnels project with pri-

Central Station in Manhattan. “While excavation in the launch shaft took place, the material and dump body averaged about 50,000 pounds lbs. as we threaded the load through the struts. You have to understand, we have three levels of struts placed 15 ft. apart for trench support at this location. Through the struts we lowered a 100 ton truck crane, a PC600 large excavator and 45 ton rough terrain with the 298,” said Kevin Dillon, operator engineer of G.T.F., a joint venture company created for the project. “Believe me, it was tricky, but the 298 worked well. In that type of situation you want control over the loads, and that is what we had.” In order to bore the four tunnels, a German built Herrenknecht 22 ft. 6 in. (6.8 m) diameter slurry tunnel-boring machine worked around the clock, boring more than 11,000 ft. (3, 352.8 m) in total for each of the four tunnels. The 298 kept the two Herrenknechts running to supply the two boring machines as they work during three, eight-hour shifts for seven straight months of non-stop boring. The boring units could not be stopped once boring commenced, so a non-stop schedule was required.

Manitowoc Prepares Crawlers for Italian Energy Contractor Italian energy contractor Saipem, a subsidiary of oil conglomerate Eni, specializes in the extraction and transportation of oil and gas. When the need arose to replace several of the cranes Saipem uses for large-scale oil and gas projects, the company turned to Manitowoc’s Lift Solutions team for a new fleet of customized cranes. Four new Manitowoc crawler cranes with customizations are headed to the Milan-based company, all modified by Manitowoc’s Lift Solutions team. The cranes reflect a significant upgrade to Saipem’s fleet. While buying the new cranes, ATCO, the mobile equipment department of Saipem, took the opportunity to tailor its new machines for the work it does in remote areas, both onshore and off, and in deep-water seas. Lift Solutions is a service from Manitowoc that employs experts from the company’s engineering, purchasing, operations and sales groups to quote, engineer and produce crawler cranes and attachments for unique applications. Lift Solutions was able to give the cranes capabilities that would better suit them for the environments in which Saipem often works. Saipem’s new cranes include two Manitowoc 14000 crawler cranes, a Manitowoc 777 and a Manitowoc 999. The Lift Solutions customizations include: • Adding a hydraulic tagline winch to aid with load-handling stability in offshore lifting applications; • Personnel-handling winch and two-shaft upper boom point to safely and efficiently transport crew from land to barge with no changes to rigging equipment, saving rigging time and effort; • Sea salt water protection for all new custom components to protect from corrosion. For example, the backup hydraulic power unit was specified as heavy marine duty and includes a large stainless steel box; • A special zinc-based primer, in addition to the standard priming and paint process, to provide superior corrosion resistance; • Custom lights installed on each crane’s boom for better visibility while working in the dark; • An emergency backup hydraulic power that can swing, hoist and lower all winches, and can also lift and lower the boom in case of engine failure. The unit is powered by an electric power source in case the cranes’ engines malfunction. All of the new equipment and upgrades had to be designed with RINA (Registro Navale Italiano) certification in mind, to ensure the work complied with both national and international rules. This certification was crucial to finalizing a deal between Manitowoc and Saipem. Saipem ATCO, represented by mobile equipment manager Rocco Bello and deputy mobile equipment manager Marco Sozzani, issued a tender for the cranes and customizations it needed. Angiolini, sales director, and Davide Camperi, area manager, both of Manitowoc Cranes in Italy — proposed a solution based on Saipem’s needs and subsequently secured the project, along with four other cranes that will be delivered to Saipem in 2013. The deal was finalized in May 2012. Dustin Soerens, product support specialist at Manitowoc, said communication with Saipem was crucial to the success of the project. “On a large-scale, highly-technical customer request such as this, open communication is a must,” said Soerens. “Both Saipem and Manitowoc did a great job in forming detailed plans early on in the project to ensure the final product met Saipem’s expectations. This project was a vivid example of the attention to customer demands and dedication to custom project accuracy that Lift Solutions was established to meet.” Production began in June 2012. Saipem ATCO mobile cranes super-
intendent Andrea D’Ostilio inspected the cranes in November and December before delivery. The Saipem job was such a success that the work done will be applied to future Lift Solutions projects. “In completing this project, not only did we satisfy Saipem’s direct need, we also opened the door to satisfy similar requirements on other Manitowoc crane models being used in offshore applications,” Soerens said. “These new designs will help Manitowoc be successful in a market where customers are demanding more than ever from their crane fleet.” Saipem was founded in 1957 and is listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. The company has some 40,000 employees working around the globe. In addition to the Manitowoc crawlers it owns, the company also uses several Grove rough-terrain cranes. Tall Order for Terex Cranes Membrey Transport and Crane Hire played a major role in the successful relocation of a rare Rothschild giraffe from the Melbourne Zoo in Victoria to the Mogo Zoo on the southern coast of New South Wales, 497 mi. (800 km) away. For the job, they used a Terex AT-20 pick and carry crane. Due to the delicate nature of the cargo, Melbourne Zoo called in Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire to transport Tanzi, the 10year-old, 15.7 ft. (4.8 m) tall Rothschild giraffe. The move, as part of the regional breeding program, would also see Tanzi reunited with her sister Shani. “We have moved a variety of large and small exotic zoo animals for around 30 years,” said Craig Membrey of Membrey’s Transport. “For this move, we were required to lift and transport the animal in a specially made giraffe crate and selected our Terex AT-20 pick and carry crane as the best equipment for this task.” To minimize stress during the move, the Melbourne Zoo conducted more than two months of crate training to ensure Tanzi was relaxed and comfortable enough to travel in the crate. As well as the potential for emotional strain, transporting such a tall and heavy animal also presented a number of logistical challenges. “Moving animals of this size requires detailed route planning, such as avoiding low bridges, while also ensuring minimum impact on the animal by completing the move in the shortest possible time,” Membrey said. “The Terex AT-20 pick and carry crane was ideal for this application. Its smooth controls gave the crane operator the ability to position the crate with gentle, fluid movements throughout the operation. “These highly versatile road cranes can be dispatched quickly to wherever they are needed via any road, and have the maneuverability, power and versatility to lift almost anything, anywhere,” Membrey added. Terex pick and carry cranes live up to their name with the strength and easy operation to pick up heavy loads, and articulated steering flexibility to move in tight spaces. Offering high road speeds to get to the job site quickly, their pick and carry capability on tires needs no outriggers, to get set up and working almost immediately. The Terex pick and carry crane range includes three models offering lifting capacities ranging from 17 to 28 tons (15 to 25 t) incorporating many features which enhance safety, driver ergonomics and improved machine operation Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire Pty Ltd is a family business whose operations were established in 1962. Originally named Membrey’s Transport, the business has expanded and now provides a variety of lifting equipment that includes cranes and forklifts, making Membrey’s a highly diversified transport and crane hire business. A Grove RT65E-2 rough-terrain crane and GMK6220L all-terrain crane are on the Arena Corinthians job site assisting in the stadium pre-assembly.
Two Grove cranes are in use constructing a massive soccer stadium in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. The Arena Corinthians, located on the east side of São Paulo, will host some of the tournament’s games before becoming the new home of the Brazilian Club Corinthians soccer team. The World Cup is a high-profile event, watched around the world. A Grove RT765E-2 rough-terrain crane and GMK6220L all-terrain crane are on the Arena Corinthians job site assisting in the stadium preassembly. They are unloading construction materials weighing as much as 37 tons (34 t) and lifting them to heights of 108 ft. (33 m) in limited space and windy conditions. São Paulo-based LOCAR is the company supplying the crane to Odebrecht, which is in charge of the stadium’s construction. Leanderson Dias, equipment supervisor of LOCAR, said the two Grove cranes are working on a tight schedule, but handling the cramped working quarters and windy conditions with ease. “Odebrecht reports that both the Grove RT765E-2 and the GMK6220L are doing an excellent job on the site,” said Dias. “They are durable, versatile machines and are playing a significant role in streamlining the construction process.” The 65-ton capacity (60 t) Grove RT765E-2 brings 110 ft. (33.5 m) of boom to the job site. It features four-wheel, multi-mode steering that offers better handling and mobility. Its moderate size makes it adept at navigating rough or cramped job sites. The GMK6220L provides a six-
section, full power 236 ft. (72 m) boom and a 242-ton (220 t) capacity. For the World Cup games, Arena Corinthians will seat 65,000 fans. After the tournament is over, the capacity will be reduced to 48,000 people. The stadium will have a spacious plaza at ground level and an underground field. The roof of the stadium will feature photovoltaic cells that generate energy for the building. The project began in May of 2011 and is due to finish this December. A 325-hp (242 kW), Tier III Cummins engine also is available. “The SCC8150 gives contractors a new option in a competitive segment of the market,” said Kyle Nape, senior vice president, SANY America Lifting Group. “Our new crane delivers a superior combination of control, performance, operator comfort, power and dependability that meets and exceeds the requirements for a machine in this weight class.” The SANY SCC8150 crawler crane offers a Rexroth hydraulic system, including the main pump, main valve and servo control. Independently driven drums include hydraulically powered planetary gears. The hydraulically driven swing system provides 360-degree rotation.
(350 m) of high-quality, 1-in. (2.6 cm) Diepa Rope, the rated line pull of the crane’s main winch is 29,542 lbs. (13,400 kg) and maximum line speed of 580 ft. (177 m) per minute. Without track frames and with boom butt, the SANY SCC8150 weighs 99,208 lbs. (45,000 kg), and measures 53.5 ft. (16.3 m) long and 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) wide. Its basic height is 10.5 ft. (3.2 m). It is available with up to 162,918 lbs. (73,898 kg) of counterweight. Five Crawler, Four Rough-Terrain Cranes With the addition of the new SCC8150 model, SANY offers five crawler cranes ranging from 110 to 550 tons (100 to 500 t), along with its four-model lineup of rough-terrain cranes, ranging from 40 to 85 tons (36.3 to 77 t). “Including the new SCC8150, SANY has brought nine new models to this marketplace since 2010,” said Nape. “We’re demonstrating our commitment to the North American market through this impressive record of machine design, development and production.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
Porsche-Designed UltraCab 2 Provides Operator Comfort, Control The Porsche-designed SANY UltraCab 2 provides ergonomics, large windows for clear visibility, heat and air conditioning, and well-placed function screens and video monitors to enhance operator control. Other capabilities include a boom-elevation device, emergency stop of all functions, two externally mounted cameras to monitor machine operations, aircraft warning light on the main boom and “shove-off” protection that prevents the machine from working unless the operator is seated in the cab. SANY-designed and manufactured electrical and intelligence systems on the SCC8150 crawler crane. Independently driven crawler assemblies enable forward and reverse travel, pivot steering and counter rotation. Outfitted with up to 1,148 ft. 23
