Ritchie Bros. Hosts Multi-Million Dollar Sale in Atlanta

M

ore than 1,750 bidders participated online and in person at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers’ multi-million dollar unreserved public equipment auction in Atlanta on March 29. Bidders came from 45 countries, including 48 U.S. states. More than 72 percent of the equipment was sold to buyers outside the state, from as far away as Australia, Germany, Egypt, Malaysia

and Panama. Online bidders purchased close to 28 percent of the equipment lots sold. In total, more than 1,400 equipment lots were sold in the auction, including more than 65 backhoe loaders, 40 miniexcavators, 25 hydraulic excavators, 25 telescopic forklifts, 25 multi-terrain loaders, 20 crawler tractors, 15 crawler loaders, 10 wheel loaders, as well as articulated dump trucks, truck tractors and more.

Local Bobcat representatives, Tim Feldman (L), and Matt Cochran, both of Bobcat of Atlanta turned out to monitor the current auction pricing of skid steer loaders.

The 22 Case 580M’s didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the ramp as two buyers quickly purchased the first 19 of them.

Looking at an older model Cat D9 for export possibilities is Mohamad Safawi of SMG Trading, Tyrone, Ga. Internet bidding may be on the rise, but many attend the auctions specifically for swapping notes and information before making their final purchase decisions.

Taking a look at the huge volume of backhoe loaders in the sale line up are (L-R) Robert Mashburn, Lee Mashburn and Jerry Hawthorne, Mashburn Equipment Sales & Rentals, Ringgold, Ga.

Testing the operation of a Cat 303.5C CR mini- excavator is Danny Stewart, Crossroads, Raleigh, N.C.

At the sale specifically looking for a deal on one of the Deere 650J dozers are Joyce and Orville Cope, Cope’s Construction, Treadway, Tenn.

Carefully inspecting a Deere 200LC excavator from the top are Josh Lovingood (L), and Isaac Hughes; while Jacob Anderson checks things out below. All three are of Jacob Anderson Co., Murphy, N.C.

Lawrenceville Access...

Georgia SR 316 Improvements Continue to Run Smoothly By Mary Reed CEG CORRESPONDENT

As part of its plan to improve state Route 316, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is overseeing a project to extend limited access along state Route 316 in the vicinity of Lawrenceville, one of the oldest cities in the Atlanta area and county seat of Gwinnett County. The job involves reconstruction of the two signalized intersections at Collins Hill Road and state Route 20 into a single interchange serving both roads. Provision of collector distributor lanes (long ramps) will allow vehicles on state Route 316 to access Collins Hill Road or state Route 20 more easily than at present. The $37.4 million project also includes construction of bridges at Collins Hill Road and at the point where state Route 20 crosses state Route 316, as well as seven traffic signals, five of which are new. The signals will be interconnected for synchronization, permitting the easy passage of traffic moving along the corridor. According to GDOT, completion of the

2.2 mi. (3.5 km) job will result in improvements in both efficiency and safety by separating traffic via the interchange, as well as improving capacity by extending the currently limited access east of state Route 20. G.P.’s Enterprises Inc., based in Auburn, Ga., is prime contractor for the job. “Traffic density in the construction area is unusually heavy, but that’s why we are building the project. When done, it should relieve congestion in the area to a great extent,” noted Minton O’Neal, chief operating officer of the company. “In addition, the project will lower the existing state Route 316 by approximately 22 ft. (6.7 m) and the current ‘at grade intersections’ will become bridges over state Route 316. We will be working to lower the roadway while maintaining four lanes of traffic at all times.” Work began in November 2011, with a contract completion date of Dec. 31, 2014. Although some difficulties have been experienced, the company has been able to quickly resolve them. “There are some unusual utility conflicts which are being addressed in a cooperative manner between GDOT, the utility owners and ourselves. This project, thus far, has

been free of major problems. The GDOT district office, the utility owners, and the subcontractors have been cooperative in keeping the project moving,” O’Neal stated. At present the company is moving earth and building sub grade for the roadway improvement project and installing storm water management systems and other utilities. For this work they are utilizing a large equipment fleet. “We have many, many pieces of equipment on the project. Hydraulic excavators, scrapers, motorgraders, bulldozers, tandem dump trucks, articulated off-road dump trucks, compactors, wheel loaders, etc....too many and too many manufacturers to mention,” said O’Neal. Approximately 40 of G.P.’s Enterprises’ employees are working on the job. Subcontractors include Baldwin Paving Inc., of Kennesaw, Ga., which will be handling asphalt paving; Rogers Bridge Company Inc., headquartered in Atlanta, which will construct the two bridges; and Norcross, Ga.-based Detection Engineering Technology Inc., which will be carrying out traffic signal and ATMS systems work.

About the Company G.P.’s Enterprises Inc., was founded in 1984 and incorporated in 1988 by George P. Flanigan, president and owner. The company self-performs clearing, grading, utility, sub-base, roadway base and concrete structures associated with the construction of highways and airports. In addition, it performs site grading and civil work associated with vertical construction. The company has completed numerous projects for GDOT involving building capacity and improving congestion, including a project in Houston County in 2010. It recently completed the Jennings Mill Parkway/ Oconee Connector project in greater Athens, Ga., and has almost completed its work with the Eagles Landing Parkway project in Henry County, Ga. Jobs under construction include the East Hiram Connector in Paulding County, Barrett Parkway in Cobb County and Lithonia Industrial Boulevard in Dekalb County. Joe Foster Joins Bobcat of Atlanta as Operations Manager Joe Foster began his career in the equipment rental business in 1984 after graduating from the University of Alabama School of Commerce and Business Administration. He started with Grace Equipment, which eventually became Prime Equipment and then RSC Equipment Rental. His career path started in Mobile, Ala. He also served in Corpus Christi and Pasadena, Tex., and Atlanta. Foster was with RSC and its predecessors for 25 years. At the pinnacle of his career with RSC he was senior vice president of the Eastern Division. When asked about the challenges of the rental business Foster stated, “The biggest challenge was working through the numerous acquisitions and mergers. We were sold several times throughout my career. Every time ownership changed it was a challenge. We worked with the changes in the financial structure, the capital restrictions and the change in philosophies. Economic ups and downs always present a challenge

in any capital intensive business.” During the last three years Foster worked with Southeast Equipment Plus, Acworth, Ga., a company that refurbishes and sells used construction equipment. Foster’s duties were in overseeing the day-to-day operations. Foster took his new position with Bobcat of Atlanta in February because, he stated, “I had been out of the retail side of the equipment business for three years and decided I wanted to get back in. There was an opportunity for me here. It’s a good company; it’s stable and has a great brand. I felt we could improve the organizational structure of the company.” Foster plans to take his long history in the equipment business and use that experience to tackle what he sees are about five or six aspects of process improvement. “Our number one project will be building on our customer service. With a core focus on customer service, we are then able to more clearly drive new equipment sales, used equipment sales, parts sales,

service and of course, rentals. I think to say any one of these is more important than the other would take away from the efforts of each department and the importance of each person. There’s work to do in every department, but we have a good base and we are going to focus on the customer and all avenues of revenue. “My initial assessment is that parts sales are pretty good, new

equipment sales are good and rentals seems to be the lowest hanging fruit here.” continued Foster. “But I don’t want to say that we are going after one thing or the other, we are after it all. As I said before, our number one priority is driving customer service. If you service your customers properly, the business will come to you.” Foster looks forward to growing his role with Bobcat of Atlanta

with a great deal of enthusiasm. “I’m excited about the opportunity here. We can grow this business to be a market leader. My drive in any operation is customer service. The only way you are going to build and develop your business is with more customers. To get more customers you have to develop them, but you also have to retain the ones you have. To retain customers you must provide good service and do what you say you’re going to do. This philosophy has worked for me throughout my career,” Foster concluded. Bobcat of Atlanta has two metro locations in Atlanta and Marietta, Ga., and also is a part of Rhinehart Equipment Company, Rome, Ga., and Bobcat of Oxford, Oxford, Ala. CEFGA Hosts Seventh Annual Construction Career EXPO On March 15 and 16 more than 6,685 total attendees including 4,806 students, 1,879 instructors, 824 parents and administrators, industry guests, volunteers and exhibitors (from more than 206 schools and 311 organizations) attended the 7th Annual Construction Career EXPO, sponsored by the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA), Transportation Education Foundation of Georgia (TEFGA), and the Georgia Utility Contractor’s Association (GUCA). The state-wide event, designed to promote careers in construction and give students the opportunity to meet employers, was held at the Georgia International Convention Center drawing record crowds, and in tumultuous economic times, CEFGA Executive Director, Scott Shelar, called it “nothing short of amazing.” Members of GUCA participated in this exciting event which had two whole areas designated just for utility construction. This year the utility construction industry area stepped forward once again with a hands-on experience for the students. A student favorite and probably biggest draw of the event again this year was an area set up where students were allowed to operate and perform certain tasks on heavy equipment. This event was sponsored by GUCA member companies, Robert M. Anderson Inc.; Richard Harp Excavation Inc.; C. A. Murren & Sons Company Inc.; and Vermeer Southeast Sales & Service, Students could operate three large excavators, two stand up loaders and a crane. The students tried their skills in picking up balls and placing them in containers with the mini excavator, moving large piles of mulch with the large excavators and operating a crane. GUCA members also had booths set up so students could find out about potential job opportunities for careers in the utility construction industry. Flint Equipment brought a heavy equipment computer simulator to show students how utility contractors install underground utilities, which they found very interesting. Students were lined up to take their turn on the simulator. This is always a popular hands-on tool. Robert M. Anderson, Inc. provided a cotton candy machine, and Brock Built, LLC provided a popcorn machine, both of which were a huge draw for students. Clayton County Water Authority held a “Meter Madness” contest where students reassembled water meters and the students with the best times were awarded a Ferguson Waterworks T-shirt and a Brent Scarbrough & Company Safety First T-shirt. GUCA’s Education Committee attended the EXPO on March 15 to walk around to see what the EXPO and SkillsUSA Championships have to offer students in construction programs looking to pursue

careers in various facets of the industry. They toured the 150,000 sq. ft. convention center and the outdoor Utility Construction area. They learned the reason members dedicated their time and resources to the CEFGA EXPO is to keep these programs alive and give the high school students an opportunity to decide if finding a career in the construction industry is the right route for them with hands-on experience and an opportunity to discuss their options with leaders in the industry. Committee members who attended the CEFGA EXPO included Matt Chatham, Blount Construction Company Inc.; Jeff Duncan, Cowin Equipment Company; Gary Hooks, Trench Shoring Services; Keith Lamberson, Trench Shoring Services; Charlie Murren, C.A. Murren & Sons Company Inc.; Philip Siegal, Hendrick, Phillips, Salzman & Flatt; and Billy Vondenbosch, Clayton County Water Authority. On March 16 CEFGA held a VIP Breakfast for all of the students who were participating in the SkillsUSA contests. Industry sponsors and exhibitors also were invited and along with past SkillsUSA con-

test medal winners, and CEFGA hosts, Ron Jackson, commissioner, Technical College System of Georgia; and Tricia Pridemore, executive director, Governor’s Office of Workforce Development; gave speeches to this year’s Skills contestants, and encouraged hard work, determination and having fun with the opportunity they have been given to compete in the contests. It was a great way to start the morning, and when breakfast was over, it was time for the exhibitors and volunteers to get to work in

their respective trade area and for the Skills contestants to start competing. GUCA found a tremendous amount of support from everyone who attended the EXPO and breakfast. GUCA would like to give special thanks to all of those who attended, donated, and helped make the 2012 CEFGA EXPO the largest and most successful to date. Kevin Cruikshank Joins Territory Sales at Ready Rent-All Kevin Cruikshank recently joined the staff of Ready Rent-All in Decatur, Ga., as territory sales for Metro Atlanta/Athens/Conyers, Ga. Cruikshank has been in the industry since 1988, but essentially grew up in the business since his dad owned Metrac and eventually passed the ownership on to Kevin and his brothers. “Coming from a family business environment, I’m excited to be working in another family business” stated Cruikshank. “We’ve had a family connection with Ready Rent-All for many years. My Uncle Jimmy used to call on Jeff Wearing who started this business 42 years ago, and I got to know Mr. Wearing through Metrac. I met his son Brian and was impressed with his passion for the business. It’s obvious that he also grew up in this business. He’s extremely knowledgeable about the rental industry, very pro-active and really wants to grow Ready Rent-All” Cruikshank added, “with the addition of EquipServ my job is to be proactive and instrumental in getting the word out and to provide awareness that we service and provide parts for the smaller equipment, which had not been the forte of this organization until a couple of years ago. I’m excited to get out and see my old friends in the business and reconnect with them in the industry that I grew up in.”

EquipServ is a service that is provided by the Decatur, Ga., location only. Brian Wearing stated, “EquipServ is an inhouse authorized service center for Wacker, Multiquip, Hatz diesel engines and Kohler. We’re currently being set up to be a Kubota service center, as well as a few other manufacturers.” When asked about the addition of Cruikshank to the staff, Wearing said “He’s been doing a bang-up job of getting the word out about us. Our goal is to get our name back out there. We’ve been in business for more than 40 years, but in a recession people that haven’t done business with us in a while may have forgotten about us. Putting the name out there, getting back out in front of these people is what we need to do.” When asked about growth in the rental industry, Wearing stated, “have I seen it in the numbers, no. But do I feel it in my gut…well I think everybody’s thinking in their gut that this is the year and that things are going to start to happen. Some sort of growth is going to happen. Do I feel that, yes, I’m very optimistic about that.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG
