Reed & Reed Awarded Contract to Replace Well-Traveled Maine Span Reed & Reed Inc. has been selected as the design-build contractor for Maine’s largest transportation project this year, replacing the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. In a press conference held by both the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) and Reed & Reed, MDOT Commissioner David Cole announced the selection of Reed & Reed as he signed the $63 million contract. The Veterans Memorial Bridge, which connects two of Maine’s largest cities, Portland with South Portland, carries more than 22,000 vehicles per day. Construction is set to begin in May 2010 with completion slated for December 2012. “This bridge is a gateway to Maine’s largest metropolitan area, and is vital to move vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic safely and efficiently between the two cities,” said Cole. “Reed & Reed’s proposal addresses these needs and also is a fitting tribute to Maine’s many veterans who served their country.” see BRIDGE page 9

A cameraman from the Discovery Channel’s show “American Loggers” shoots as officials from Mack Trucks Inc. and customer Gerald Pelletier Inc. tour the Mack Macungie Assembly Operations outside Allentown, Pa. (L-R) are Jeff Pelletier, Mack Regional Vice President Brian Buckley, Eldon Pelletier and Bangor Truck Salesman Eric Dysart. Two Titan by Mack models built at the plant appear in the series.
When the Discovery Channel was looking for a company to feature in its new television series, “American Loggers,” it turned to Gerald Pelletier Inc., a family-owned and operated business that’s been working the rugged and remote North Maine Woods for three generations. When the Pelletier family needed new trucks that could not only handle the rigors of its day-to-day operations but also look good for the camera, it turned to Mack Trucks Inc. Because the work they do and where they do it is so brutal, it was time to call on the biggest of the Bulldogs. Cue the Titan by Mack, its 16-L Mack MP10 engine see PELLETIER page 10

$73M Grant…
Vt. Passenger Rail Expansion Tied to Stimulus MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Vermont transportation officials should learn within the next few months whether they will receive a $73 million federal grant that could help expand passenger rail service from Rutland to Burlington. The state of Vermont has applied for the federal stimulus funding to upgrade the railroad tracks along the western side of the state. Vermont Transportation Agency rail chief Joe Flynn told the Barre Times Argus that upgrading the tracks with the stimulus money would enable the state to expand Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express train, which now travels between New York City and Rutland. A requirement of the grant is that the upgrade be completed within two construction seasons.

Reed & Reed to Begin Replacing Maine’s Vital Veteran’s Memorial Bridge in May BRIDGE from page 1
Reed & Reed was selected from three design-build proposals submitted. MaineDOT utilized a “best value” scoring process in its selection of the design-build team that takes into account the technical value of innovations and features of the design and construction concepts as well as the cost of the project. The Reed & Reed team was awarded the highest technical score and they submitted the lowest bid price of $63.1 million. The other teams submitting proposals included the Lane Construction Corporation/Figg Engineering with a bid of $68.4 million; and the Cianbro Corporation/Louis Berger with a bid of $69.6 million. Jackson Parker, president & CEO of Reed & Reed commented, “We are pleased to be building this important bridge project and consider this award an honor, especially given the qualifi-
cations of our competitors. Our team worked hard to develop a number of innovative design concepts and the expertise that Reed & Reed brings to this project makes all of our employees very proud.” Reed & Reed’s winning proposal incorporates a community-centered plan with significant public involvement and a design-build process, which allows for a faster construction schedule. Reed & Reed’s team includes Falmouth-based T.Y. Lin International as the team’s lead design and engineering firm; architectural firm SMRT for landscape design services; GZA GeoEnvironmental for geotechnical engineering services; and Barton & Gingold for the pre-construction public education process and ongoing communications throughout the project. Cole said, “The department is very pleased with Reed & Reed’s proposal as it provides the things we were looking for in terms of innovation, traffic
improvements, community outreach and aesthetics. They’re one of our top contractors and we are pleased to be working with Reed & Reed. Reed & Reed has a long history of building many of Maine’s bridges, including the Casco Bay Bridge Approach Spans Substructure; the Brunswick-Topsham Bypass; and Maine’s award-winning Penobscot Narrows Bridge. About Reed & Reed Reed & Reed is one of Northern New England’s largest and most versatile general contractors building bridges, wind power projects, and other essential infrastructure. Founded in 1928 in Woolwich, Maine, by Captain Josiah W. Reed and his son Carlton Day Reed, the company has prospered under four generations of family leadership.
