Equipment East Makes Mark in New England Distributing LiuGong Iron Soon after a Massachusetts contractor demo’d its first pieces of LiuGong earthmoving construction equipment, the owners were so impressed with the machine’s performance and tremendous cost savings that they decided to pursue obtaining the LiuGong line of construction equipment and become its distributor in New England as Equipment East LLC. “Since we weren’t familiar with LiuGong, we thoroughly inspected the LiuGong products. We [found] a well engineered, well built product, manufactured with industry standard components such as Cummins Engines, ZF transmissions and axles and Kawasaki pumps and controls, just to name a few — and it was available at a substantial savings,” said Giovanni Albanese, president of Equipment East. “In 2010, we attended our first LiuGong Global Dealer meeting in China,” Albanese said.

“It’s a no frills machine, so you’re not paying for a lot of gizmos that are of no use to a highway department or contractor,” he said. “It’s a hard-working machine that gets the job done. It’s easy to service and maintain, powered by a Cummins diesel engine and a ZF transmission. The parts for the engine and drive train are industry standard and readily accessible.”

Jim Mullen (L), sales representative of Equipment East and Giovanni Albanese, president of Equipment East.

“We toured the factory and met with LiuGong executives and other LiuGong distributors from throughout the world. We saw a very modern factory from a manufacturer that is actually one of the largest wheel loader manufacturers in the world. We spoke to distributors who assured us that LiuGong was very capable of supporting the products that they manufacture.” According to Equipment East Sales Representative Jim Mullen, the LiuGong loader is ideally suited for the private contractor and the municipal market.

It will be the largest turbine in Fall River. But that’s faint praise. It will simultaneously be one of the largest wind turbines in the state, in New England and, perhaps, the country. With three years in the making, this giant producer of electrical power will be up and operating in February. “Philips Lightolier has been proud to call Fall River home for more than 40 years. As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the local community, Philips began the process of commissioning a wind turbine at our Fall River facility more than see turBINE page 10

Limited slip differential on all four wheels comes standard on all LiuGong loaders. As a result, the loaders were able to pull through deep mud with a bucket filled with wet, heavy material.”

Keeping Things Moving As a contractor for more than 30 years, Albanese is aware of the importance of minimizing downtime. “We have invested heavily in LiuGong parts,” Albanese said. “We’ve used these machines long enough in our rental fleet that we know what our parts inventory should consist of to keep our customers operating and we have made that investment. If one of our customers is down and I can’t get him running, we have been known to go so far as to taking a

piece of equipment out of our rental fleet and swapping it out until we have resolved the problem. But, to be honest with you, these problems do not arise all that often.” “Furthermore, LiuGong Construction Machinery North America headquartered in Katy, Texas, has a huge parts warehouse with inventory available for our market,” added Albanese. Deep Roots Although Equipment East is a relatively new name for equipment distribution in New England, the Albanese name is well recognized within construction circles. In 1978, Giovanni and his brother, Marco, founded a construction company called Albanese Brothers. This company had substantial growth primarily as a large utility contracting company doing major water, sewer and pump station projects. In 1991, Giovanni and Marco separated their companies. Giovanni and his partner, Andrea Ciano, founded Albanese D&S Inc. Today, Albanese D&S continues to show strong growth with 65 employees and more than $15 million in annual sales. In September 2009, when Giovanni Albanese and his partner, Andrea Ciano, started Equipment East, the day-today operation of Albanese D&S was organized by Ciano see DISTRIBUTOR page 6

three years ago,â€? said Bob Wedekind, project manager. “This supports the company’s ambition of making the Philips Lightolier facility a net zero plant and one of the greenest manufacturing facilities in the state of Massachusetts.â€? Over the last several years, the facility in Fall River has been recognized for its sustainability efforts by: • Reducing electricity use by 40 percent • Reducing water use by 78 percent • Reducing natural gas use by 25 percent (we now are at 36 percent) • Reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by 98 percent The single huge wind turbine is just the latest in Philips’ long line of sustainability efforts. “The wind turbine at the Philips Lightolier facility is a great example of a public-private partnership to achieve sustainability goals and create jobs. Philips worked with the state of Massachusetts and the Clean Energy Commission Center to qualify for grants and tax credits in support of the turbine, while funding the project,â€? added Wedekind. “This is part of the company’s ambition to make the Philips Lightolier facility a net zero plant and one of the greenest manufacturing facilities in the state. Philips’ funding went toward the purchase of the wind turbine, while regional funding went to support the local construction and services associated with its development.â€? The wind turbine will stand 40 stories tall or 415 ft. (126 m) from base to the tip of the blade. The blades alone measure 148 ft. (45 m) each, and when fully operational, the turbine will have a 2 megawatt capacity. It is expected to produce about 60 percent of the electricity needed to power the Philips Lightolier plant. • Hub height of 262 ft. (80 m) = center of blades at the top of the tower • Blade Tip Height of 415 ft. (126.49 m) = 415 feet to the tip of the blade when straight up • One of the largest installations in Massachusetts • The total weight of the structure is 390 tons (354 t) • Each blade is 10 tons (9 t) • The hub is 27 tons (25 t) • The Nacelle (generator and housing at the top of the tower) is 96 tons (87 t) • The complete tower is 220 tons (200 t) “Philips entered into this project with the specific goal of looking for a U.S. partner to build the wind turbine and did extensive research into companies that could accom-

modate a turbine of this size. Unfortunately, most U.S. companies build smaller, lower capacity wind turbines, or could not support a custom project, said Wedekind. It is truly an international production, crafted and designed from the greatest manufacturing nations on earth. The wind turbine has components that come from all over the world, including Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, China and the United States. Many of the major electrical components came from Germany and Austria, the switches and sensors from Finland, Denmark, France and Italy, the super capacitor from the United States and the blades and main stack were made in China. It is only powered by wind and will generate a 2 megawatt capacity. Unlike Cape Cod, where residents continue to fight the implantation of such large turbines, saying they blot the physical and visual landscape, the Fall River generator will be received in quite a different manner. “There are several differences. This is only one turbine, not a wind farm and the location, Airport Road in Fall River, is an industrial park, not a residential area, said Wedekind. “In addition, the turbine is for generating power for the plant, not for residential use. Philips worked with local community leaders to share plans and ensure constant communication on the turbine, as well as working to answer questions and concerns about its operation. Generators of the idea are calling this a “win-wind situation. “Everyone gains with this type of project. The power that is generated will supply 60 percent of the plant’s electricity needs and allow the company to invest those savings back into local jobs to produce energy-efficient lighting products right here in the U.S., added Wedekind. “During the past six months, Philips has not only worked with the ILWU, USW, IBEW, and local contractor J.L. Marshall and Sons Inc., and Glynn Electrical, but also has, as a condition of the project, required that the turbine to be delivered to the Port of Fall River in order to employ hundreds of people. “Moreover, Wedekind added, “Wind energy is a clean, renewable energy source unlike many power plants that generate electricity. It doesn’t produce any CO2 and is a more environmentally friendly way to produce power. There were as many players in this successful joint project as there are directions for New England winds. “In tandem with employees, business see TURBINE page 12

Cianbro Looking to Hire Workers Across Maine Despite the challenges of the global economy in recent years, Cianbro continues to have an optimistic outlook and the desire and ability to put skilled Mainers to work in good paying jobs. Cianbro currently has about 150 openings available for a wide range of skilled construction workers; jobs which the company is intent on filling immediately. The hiring effort comes as the company prepares to tackle the largest backlog of projects in Cianbro’s 63 year history, and follows on the heels of an earlier hiring campaign that brought an additional 250 team members into the firm last fall. Cianbro is seeking Maine state licensed electricians and helpers who would be assigned to jobs in the Greater Bangor area, Brewer, Auburn and various substations across the southern part of the state. Structural iron workers and riggers are needed in Greater Bangor and

Cianbro is hiring journey level millwrights, pipewelders and pipefitters for Greater Bangor and Woodland, as well as for the spring outage season when annual maintenance is performed at a number of facilities across the region. Also on the list of jobs: First class transmission lineworkers, electrical engineers, electrical superintendents, mechanical superintendents, safety professionals, estimators and project controllers. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to employ our fellow citizens,” said Cianbro Corporation President Andi Vigue. “We’re bullish on hiring Maine people who possess the skills necessary to accomplish the challenging projects that Cianbro faces. Not only will those people we are hiring become part of the largest construction firm in the Northeast, they will also become co-owners in our employee-owned company on Day One.”

partners, governments and non-governmental organizations, we work towards improving our communities and our manufacturing practices,” said Wedekind. “In order to develop a renewable energy source on this site, Philips collaborated with Fall River Mayor Flanagan, Governor Deval Patrick, the Fall River Conservation Commission, the Fall River City Council, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), and the Massachusetts Office of Business Development.” Philips’s business partners include J.L. Marshall and Sons Inc., the local trade unions: IBEW, USW and ILWU, Glynn Electric and National Grid. Perhaps, in the ultimate irony, wind itself will be a significant factor in how, when and how easily the skyscraper-tall turbine will be erected. There is danger to the construction workers who must assemble and raise it so high. “Wind could be a challenge as it might make it difficult for the construction crew to mount the turbine. At these heights, there are air currents that can pose significant challenges such as swinging the crane, that make it very difficult/dangerous to raise and align the different components of the turbine,” said Wedekind.
