Lucky’s Trailer Sales is located in South Royalton, Vt.
Not everyone turns their family dairy farm into a successful trailer sales business, but that’s exactly what Russell “Lucky” Dimmick Jr. did. In 1967, Russell Dimmick Sr. and his wife Sharon sold their construction business and purchased a new dairy farm in Randolph Center, Vt. Their son, Lucky, had expressed an interest in diversifying the family business into other areas. was no longer practical. It needed a location more convenient for customers to find and easier for what had become daily deliveries of new trailers and trailer parts. The company leased a log cabin on Route 107 just off Interstate 89 in South Royalton, Vt. The repair shop remained at the family farm; all sales were handled from the facility on Route 107. The company had grown from three employees to seven.

Between 1991 and 1993, the company experienced another strong growth period and a shop was leased near the sales offices in South Royalton. At this point the company had grown to 12 employees. In March 1997, 13 years after the company had been founded, Lucky’s Trailer Sales moved into a brand new facility that measured 80 by 184 ft. and the company was employing 22 people. Lucky’s has sold trailers of all shapes, sizes and applications, up and down the east coast of the United States. Its primary focus, however, is serving customers in the Northeast. To accomplish this it has invested in stocking trailers from a very large variety of manufacturers it represents, including Big Tex Trailers, Mission, Sure Trac, Hillsboro, EBY, see LUCKY page 8

Lifelong Dream Comes True for Owner of High-Tech Co. Bob Moio Enjoys Operating Construction Equipment on His Wooded 40-Acre Estate Bob Moio’s lifelong dream of living in the country came true five years ago. He never imagined, however, that when he finally made it, he would be working around his property with a powerful Bobcat compact track loader and actually enjoying it. His heavily wooded, 40-acre property is located near Johnston, R.I., a town where Moio owns a high-tech telecommunications company. As he watched his new house being built, Moio became interested in what could be accomplished with construction equipment, such as taking down giant oak trees and digging the foundation. “That’s when I got the idea that maybe I should have some type of machine to finish the work myself,” he said. “I knew nothing about equipment, but the contactor let me try his skid-steer loader a few times. That’s when I decided to look around for a machine of my own.” Among the stops he made was at J.J. Gregory & Son, the Bobcat dealer in East Providence. He had looked at other brands, but the well-earned, long-term reputation of Bobcat made the decision easy. “I had always heard good things about Bobcat and knew they had been in this business for a very long time, so they must know what they’re doing,” he said. “I purchased a T300 compact track loader ― equipped with Selectable Joystick Controls ― after the dealer assured me that I wouldn’t have any trouble operating it. I was still somewhat skeptical until I started operating the machine, and quickly discovered it was not only very easy to operate, but helped me do exactly what needed to be done around here.” Do-It-Yourself Attitude As soon as the bigger equipment finished working around his new home, Moio and his T300 took over. “Those other machines did an excellent job of doing what I hired them to do,” he said. “But I was being charged $135 an hour, so I decided I could handle the rest myself. I probably paid for the compact track loader just by doing my own landscaping.” The T300 is an 81-hp (60.4 kW) loader with a rubber track undercarriage for superior flotation, extra traction, substantially reduced ground pressure and low ground disturbance. That translates into minimal damage to Moio’s yard when he’s driving on
it. “I always thought I should install a radio on the T300, but I never did because I was always so interested in the work I was doing,” he said. “I enjoy operating the machine so much that I don’t need any background noise.” Some of the jobs he has used the T300 for during the past five years include: • Moving rocks, soil and trees that were taken down. Also removing stumps with a Bobcat grapple attachment. • Building and maintaining a 1-mile nature walk around the property. • Installing lamp poles along the driveway using a backhoe attachment. • Landscaping the entire property, including placing rocks, planting shrubs and building a patio. Everything was planted with the help of the Bobcat digger attachment. “It would have cost me a fortune to pay for all this landscaping, and I would not have had any control over the work,” he said. “Instead I use the T300 a day here and a halfday there, and the time just went by and I got the work done. I saved a lot of money by doing it myself.” Complementary Machine While Moio considers the T300 extremely valuable, last year he decided he needed something else to help maintain the grounds. “I wanted a machine to get me around the property faster and for handling lighter chores,” he says. “A compact tractor seemed to be the answer.” He again looked at several brands, including Bobcat. “I was very pleased with my T300 and Bobcat attachments, but I was a little hesitant because Bobcat tractors were relatively new. However, once I test drove the CT445, it was obvious Bobcat knows the compact tractor business, too. It was everything I wanted. It is a very good machine.” Where does he keep his equipment when he’s not using it? He built a barn to store his compact track loader, compact tractor and Bobcat attachments. The CT445 is a 45-hp (33.5 kW) tractor that offers expanded front-mounted attachment options, as well as many rear-mounted implement options. Standard features include telescopic lower links with telescopic sway bars and crank-style lower link adjustments for easy 3-point implement see DREAM page 10

Auctions, Fairs and Expos Lucky’s Trailer Sales’s relationship with Yoder & Frey Auction Company extended well beyond the purchase of those first two trailers. For about 20 years, Lucky’s has exhibited at Yoder & Frey’s large equipment auctions held each February in Kissimmee. The company found that many of its customers traveled to Florida in February to escape the harsh winters and it has always been a very good event for them, according to the company. In addition to the Florida auctions Lucky’s Trailer Sales also has exhibited for years at the Freyburg Fair in Maine and the Northern Loggers Show and Expo.

Talbert, Transcraft, Reitnouer, Trail King, Mac, Trailstar, Peerless, Deloupe, Vanguard, Wells Cargo and Cargo Pro, among others. The company has a very large multibayed shop where all types of trailer repairs and service are conducted. “We have invested in over $2 million worth of parts stock so that we are generally well equipped to handle a repair on any trailer that we have sold. We also have a huge showroom, which features many of the accessories such as hitches, lights, tires, rims, etc., that any of our customers may need,” Lucky Dimmick said. “In this part of the country moving snow is a big deal. To accommodate our customers we sell and install approximately 450 snowplows a year. We’ve also expanded into the sale of truck and service bodies to accommodate municipal accounts, contractor and commercial customers that are in need of such items. For these types of products we offer Knapahied, Rugby, Hillsboro, Brandon, EBY and others. “Due to the demand our service repair shop has expanded to 10 bays and we have two parts trucks on the road doing deliveries. Our sales staff has expanded to six full-time trailer specialists.” The company currently has more than 40 employees.
Getting the Word Out “We are big believers in advertising,” said Russell. “When a retail business like ours is located in a rural section of Vermont you have to advertise to get the word out. So, we spend a lot of money to make sure that our name is known and then we take great care to be sure our customers have a great experience here. They are only going to come back and tell their friends about us and make the long trip up here if they are completely satisfied before and after the sale, and that satisfaction is our goal. “I used to joke that we called the company Lucky’s because you would be lucky if you found us, particularly back when we were operating back on the farm. We must be doing something right; in good years we’ve been known to sell nearly 1,500 trailers. “Taking care of our customers properly has paid big dividends. Today we routinely supply trailers to some of the largest hauling companies in the Northeast.” Not Just Cows During many of the years of the farms operation in Vermont the farm also doubled as a dairy farm/dude ranch. Guests came to the farm from all over the country and at times from other countries to live and work on the farm and experience that lifestyle. (AP) A bill that would allow for the return of tolls on some Connecticut highways cleared a key legislative step on March 18. The General Assembly’s Transportation Committee, on a 23-12 vote, approved a bill that would allow tolls on new state highways or highway extensions, such as the proposed completion of Route 11 in southeastern Connecticut. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for further action. Members of the southeastern Connecticut delegation have pushed for the legislation as a way to help pay to finish Route 11, a project that has been stalled for years. It ends abruptly in Salem, detouring traffic onto a narrow, two-lane road. The bill would not be mandatory. “It’s not about putting tolls on existing highways. It’s not about border tolls. So if you’re concerned about your constituents who are currently
commuting along our highways, nothing will change with this bill,” said Rep. Ed Jutila, D-East Lyme. “Passage of this bill does not mean tolls are automatically going to go up anywhere.” But some Republican members of the committee said although they understand the desire to finish Route 11, they fear the bill could ultimately lead to tolls elsewhere in the state and possibly someday along existing stretches of highway. “I think what we’re doing is establishing some level of precedent,” said Rep. David Scribner, R-Brookfield, the ranking House Republican on the Transportation Committee. Another bill, proposed by Rep. Antonio Guerrera, D-Rocky Hill, the committee’s co-chairman, would allow electronic highway tolls elsewhere in Connecticut to help raise much-needed state revenue for transportation expenses. Guerrera said there are some technical issues with the bill, which has mixed support in the
General Assembly, but he said he still plans to pursue the legislation. The General Assembly closed the state’s toll booths in the late 1980s following some fatal crashes. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, the state’s new Democratic governor, has said he might favor using tolls to help raise money to help complete Route 11, which was supposed to move traffic from the Waterford/New London area to Hartford. Jutila said he received a wake-up call a year or so ago when the Department of Transportation commissioner told the legislature that Route 11 was among a number of projects considered to be “un-fundable.” “I realized at this point we’re probably not going to do new highway construction without coming up with a new mechanism for paying for it,” he said. This bill, Jutila said, could jumpstart other long-delayed highway projects in Connecticut.

changes. Adding to driver comfort and operation are a suspension seat, hydrostatic transmission and steering brakes. Moio uses the compact tractor to plow snow from his 800-foot driveway, maintain the walking trail, move soil and other light materials and get around the property quickly and effortlessly. “The CT445 has done a great job of helping me maintain my property,” he said. He also points out that he doesn’t have to hire any grounds maintenance services. “With the two machines there isn’t anything I can’t do around the property,” he said. “I would recommend this equipment to any-
one with acreage, because these days it’s difficult to rely on other people to come out here for every little thing you want done and wonder when they will show up. It’s very easy to do this work myself with these two machines — and do it on my own schedule.” Working around his property has been a great diversion for Moio. “It’s so different from running a high-tech company,” he said. “I never imagined I would be doing this type of work, but I really enjoy working around my own property.” For more information, visit www.MyWorkSaver.com/CTL. N.H. Bills Block Taking Land for Hydroelectric Power Project CONCORD, N.H. (AP) New Hampshire lawmakers are holding hearings on two bills aimed at slowing down a project to carry hydroelectric power from Canada to New England. Both bills would prohibit utilities from seeking permission from the state to take private property by eminent domain for the construction or operation of a private, large-
scale transmission line. One bill also requires a regional planning commission to study the Northern Pass project. Power towers carrying the line would stretch 140 mi. A 40-mi. section that would come through the northernmost part of the state has many residents there worried about an eyesore that would cause falling property 5.6875 in. values and a drop in tourism.
