The State Route (SR) 22 Clyde Project in Indiana County, Pa., began construction on June 25, 2007. The roadwork portion wrapped up at the end of November and the highway is now fully open to four-lane traffic. The project encompassed around 5 mi. (8 km) of new concrete lane-lane highway with jug handles for turn-arounds and turning lanes. Approximately 19 lane mi. (30.6 km) of roadway were constructed to provide access for local traffic. With the completion of construction, SR 22 is now four lanes throughout Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 10. The design also included a concrete retaining wall, truck inspection areas for the PA State Police, and other safety and drainage improvements.

Landscaping will be completed in by May 2011. New Enterprise Stone and Lime of New Enterprise, Pa., was the prime contractor of the $51.2 million project. The company’s responsibilities included excavation, concrete paving, drainage, sedimentation control, stormwater basins, grading the road bed and bridge work. In addition to New Enterprise, 24 subcontractors worked on the project including Quaker Sales Corporation of Johnstown for asphalt paving; Terratech of Virginia (Berryville, Va.), which provided temporary shoring for the bridge; Williams & Willman Line Painting of Kittanning painted all roadway lines and Strongstown’s B&K Enterprises provided and installed concrete median barrier, delineation, and permanent signing. NEW YORK (AP) Steel construction has reached the halfway point for 1 World Trade Center, the building also known as the Freedom Tower. After years of stalled development, steel at the building reached the 52nd story on Thursday, more than 600 ft. (about 200 m) above ground. The tower is slated to stand at 104 stories, with an antenna reaching hundreds of feet higher, bringing it to a symbolic 1,776 ft. (541 m) — the tallest in the country. The U.S. declared independence from Britain the year 1776. The building was renamed to better attract corporate tenants, but the Freedom Tower name has stuck for many and still remains on the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation’s Web site detailing the rebuilding. On Dec. 16, a worker wearing a hard hat drove a bolt into a steel column on the 52nd floor. It takes so long for workers at the rising tower to return to the ground that a sandwich shop built out of shipping containers is being raised along with the building by a hydraulically powered platform. The skyscraper is one of several envisioned at the site, along with a Sept. 11 memorial, transit hub and performing arts center. The memorial, with reflecting pools set above the footprints of the fallen towers, is expected to open by the 10th anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

Despite Steep Odds, Couple’s Business Gamble Pays Off When Maria Fuentes decided to go into business for herself, she knew the odds of success were long. Statistics show most businesses fail in the first few years, even if the owners have experience in the field they’re going into. Maria didn’t. On top of that, she chose a field that’s historically been a man’s domain, stacking the chances for success even further against her. “I had people telling me from the beginning not to do it; that I’d never survive because it’s a tough market and a man’s world,” said Fuentes, president of Aspen Landscaping Contracting which she founded in 1996. “But I wanted a business of my own that allowed me to work from home and be with my kids.” She came up with the idea of starting a landscaping business while on maternity leave from her job at Motorola. Researching the industry, Fuentes realized there was a good opportunity in the New Jersey heavy highway landscaping marketplace. “Despite the opportunity and market, I had some uncertainty, because I didn’t know anyone in the heavy-highway or landscaping industries, or anything about the bidding

process,” said Maria. “I just jumped in, learning as I went and self-teaching how to bid. Fortunately, there were general contractors who were willing to give me some feedback. I was certified with New Jersey Transit, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Port Authority, and that helped because practically every governmental project has some form of landscaping attached to it.” Once the certifications were in place, Fuentes could bid as a prime contractor on state projects that are considered primarily landscaping — more than 51 percent of the total job is made up of landscaping. Aspen Landscaping Contracting landed about $2 million in work within its first couple of years, and business took off. With a firm foothold in the market and prospects good, Fuentes’ husband, Don, retired from his law enforcement job and joined Aspen as Senior Project Manager in 1999. “I’m extremely proud of what Maria has accomplished,” said Don, who helped research the industry and called on contractors to get Aspen Landscaping’s name out before joining the business full time. “There has been a lot of hard work behind it. When she started out, she’d be up in the middle of the night to type bids and fax them out in her office on the second floor of our home. During the day, I would often be on the first floor and hear the phone ring upstairs, hoping it was someone calling about a project.” Seeing Both Sides Aspen Landscaping Contracting’s phone has rung more and more frequently throughout the past decade, much of the business coming from repeat customers who turn to the company to sub the landscaping portion of heavy-highway projects. Aspen offers topsoil placement, planting, rooftop landscaping, wetlands restoration, soil-erosion control and landfill remediation. When we bid as a prime contractor, we believe we treat our subs the way we want to be treated. The bottom line, either way, is that we have to get the job done when we say we will, and we create good relationships based on our previous reputation. We’re always the last ones on the job, so there’s an urgency to not only do the job right, but on time because no one gets paid until the job is closed out.” Aspen Landscaping has closed out

NEW YORK (AP) New York City plans to build a 3 mi. (4.8 km) long tunnel to divert water from a leaking aqueduct that brings in half of the city’s drinking water from upstate reservoirs, officials announced Nov. 19. The plan calls for the bypass tunnel, at depths of 600 to 800 ft. (183 to 244 m), to run east from Newburgh in Orange County, under the Hudson River to the Town of Wappinger in Dutchess County. The leaking portion of the aqueduct will then be sealed. “The Delaware Aqueduct is a primary water artery to the City, and fixing the leaks that have appeared since it went online more than 65 years ago is critical to supplying nine million New Yorkers with the high quality drinking water they need every day,” city environmental Commissioner Cas Holloway said in a statement. Up to 35 million gallons of water a day has been escap-

ing through cracks in the 85-mi.-long aqueduct. The leaks were first discovered in 1988 and have caused chronic flooding in Wawarsing, about 100 mi. north of New York City. Construction of the tunnel is to begin in 2013 and be completed by 2019 for a cost of about $1.2 billion. An additional $900 million will be spent on projects to supplement the city’s water supply during part of the construction period, officials said. David Bragdon, director of the Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability, said in a statement that the aqueduct repair is a critical step toward meeting the city’s goal of developing backup systems for the water network. The repair and project is expected to create between 1,000 and 1,500 jobs, Holloway said.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The Maine Department of Transportation and city of Portland are celebrating the start of construction of a new pier big enough to host the world’s largest cruise ships. The $4.8 million deep-water berth will complete the vision for the Ocean Gateway Marine Terminal, doubling berthing capacity for cruise ships and other large commercial vessels. Gov. John Baldacci, who attended the groundbreak-

ing, said it’ll have a significant economic impact not just on Portland but on the entire state. The project is funded by a transportation bond approved by voters in June. The Oct. 29 ceremony coincided with the final cruise ship visit — by the Crystal Symphony — of the city’s record-setting 2010 cruise ship season.

University of Maine Bridge Plans Eyed By Russia for Handling of Olympic Traffic ORONO, Maine (AP) A Russian company wants to know more about the University of Maine’s “Bridge-ina-Backpack” technology as it prepares for increased traffic during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The inflatable composite-concrete arch bridge technology is used on six

bridges in Maine, with more planned across the country. UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center and the private company Advanced Infrastructure Technologies LLC are talking with the Russian company, Noviy Proekt, which is coordinating the $1.5 billion

construction effort at the Olympic sites. The Russian company also is considering the technology for use in railroad bridges and other public infrastructure construction in Russia and neighboring countries.

N.J. Must Pay $271M to Feds for Killing Tunnel Job +

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) New Jersey owes the federal government more than $271 million after canceling a rail tunnel connecting the state with New York, according to a debt notice obtained Nov. 29 by The Associated Press. The letter from the Federal Transit Administration’s chief financial officer to NJ Transit’s executive director demands payment of $271,101,291 by Dec. 24. It’s money the government wants New Jersey to repay for work done on the Hudson River tunnel before Republican Gov. Chris Christie terminated the project. The notification follows a warning letter earlier in November estimating the charges. “FTA demands payment in full within 30 days from the date of this letter, hereinafter referred to as the ‘delinquency date,’’’ the letter stated. The letter was dated Nov. 24. NJ Transit Executive Director Jim Weinstein said in early November that the state hadn’t determined if it would have to pay any money back. NJ Transit, which had been run-

ning the project, has the right to request a review of the charges and to dispute all or part of the debt. However, if the state does nothing and allows the debt to become delinquent, it could be assessed interest and penalties. Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak would not say Nov. 29 whether the charges would be paid in full or disputed or where New Jersey would get the money if it decided to repay the government or was found liable for all or part of the bill. The $8.7 billion project to construct a second rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York — known as Access to the Region’s Core, or ARC — was 15 years in the making when Christie pulled the plug Oct. 27, citing potential cost overruns. More than $600 million had been spent for engineering, construction and environmental studies. The federal government and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had each committed $3 billion to the project. New Jersey’s portion was $2.7 billion. The state and Port Authority were responsible for overruns, which Christie said

could add $2 billion to $5 billion to the price tag. Other states including New York immediately began lobbying for the federal share. The tunnel was intended to supplement a century-old two-track tunnel under the Hudson River that has been at capacity for years. The new tunnel would have been able to handle an extra 25 NJ Transit commuter trains per hour during peak periods; without it, New Jersey is left a tunnel that can handle 23 Amtrak and NJ Transit trains. More than 625,000 people trek into Manhattan from New Jersey each work day, about 185,000 by rail, and even a minor delay can translate into long waits. Christie has since said he would consider contributing to a cheaper alternative: extending New York’s No. 7 subway line under the Hudson River to New Jersey. John Wisniewski, who chairs the state Democratic State Committee and heads the transportation committee in the state Assembly, questioned Christie’s financial acumen. “We now know that his looking out for our financial interests will cost New Jersey taxpayers at least $271 million,’’ he said. “To make

matters worse, the governor has now pledged New Jersey money to help finance New York’s subway expansion — without even seeing a plan or a cost estimate. It doesn’t seem like he’s being much of a financial watchdog, only a theatrical bulldog.” Six months before Christie pulled the plug on the project, Weinstein received word that NJ Transit’s request for $206 million more in start-up money had been approved. The approval letter, sent from an FTA regional administrator on April 14 and obtained Nov. 29 by The Associated Press, allowed NJ Transit “to advance construction and support activities to maintain the project budget and schedule.” The money was part of the FTA’s overall funding commitment. The letter also raises financial issues including how New Jersey intends to fund its capital road repair program administered through the Transportation Trust Fund, which is nearly broke. Critics like Wisniewski have speculated that Christie killed the tunnel, at least in part, to divert some money to state road projects.

Joint-Effort Project Ends After Three-Plus Years of Work %

This project was a joint effort between PennDOT District 10’s Design Squad 1, Sucevic, Piccolomini, & Kuchar Engineering Inc. of Uniontown, Pa., and GAI Consultants of Homestead. This coordinated effort incorporated design components from each of the partners into this three-and-ahalf-year project. Construction phasing was used to continuously maintain two lanes of traffic on mainline SR 22 over the duration of the project. Approximately 2 million cu. yds. (1.5 million cu m) of dirt were excavated.

“The majority of this excavated material had to be drilled and blasted to breakup the rock before removal,” said Warner Barate, PennDOT project engineer. Much of the material was recycled into an 18-in. (45.7 cm) thick subgrade to provide structural support and drainage under the newly constructed four-lane mainline roadway and shoulders. New Enterprise used a GPS grading system for the roadway excavation. With this method, no grade stakes are used. The system creates a 3-D map of the job site in the cab of each machine. This allows the operator to get a clear picture of what the final grade should look like. Approximately 65,000 cu. yds. (49,696 cu m) of concrete

The project was originally designed and bid to be asphalt. “During construction, the price index for diesel fuel and asphalt rose so steeply that it made sense to evaluate constructing the project in concrete instead of asphalt,” said Barate. “When analyzing the material’s life cycle costs, concrete pavement was less expensive.” Below the roadway, crews constructed an 18-in. rock cap subgrade from excavated rock material on the project. The subbase course for the concrete road is a 3-in. (1,223.3 cu m) of concrete along with 216,000 lbs. (97,976 kg) of rebar. A retaining wall was constructed to support a high-tension power line that runs across SR 22. According to Barate, to move the high tension/high voltage power line, it would have cost the taxpayers of Pennsylvania about $1.8 million, so a retaining wall with caissons was designed for $477,000 to keep the tower in its original location. In Pasadena, Calif., a sculptor erected one 14 ft. high out of steel to mark the road and hold food drives. In San Antonio a restaurant put a 24-footer up, and locals argue whether it is art or an advertisement. But Tom Schmitt of Westport, Mass., raised his large pine timber fork as a sort of conversation piece, a literal fork in the road at the place of a symbolic fork for travelers. Like most New Englanders, Tom Schmitt and his wife Kate would send directions to visiting friends and relatives, using the familiar descriptive phrase, “When you come to the fork in the road,” to explain which way to turn. Getting to their home, involved their own personal “fork” at the intersection of Old Harbor and River Roads. Occasionally, the Schmitts would wonder aloud about that term’s literal interpretation, and from time to time imagined how drivers might react if — upon reaching the intersection — they might actually encounter a large fork. “I drive past this location, this fork in the road, at least ten times per week,” said the artist. He also had lived for a time in Pasadena, Calif., where he was inspired by the sculptor’s fork near the highway (although it is no longer there.) Constructing The Fork Last Spring — during a visit to Delano’s sawmill in Dartmouth, Mass., to pick up lumber for a boat project —Schmitt noticed large pieces of clear pine timber that had been sawed from trees felled near a power line right-of-way. Thinking they might become fork construction material, Schmitt loaded them onto his truck along with the boat lumber. On the way back to Westport, he began to think about how to fashion a large, reasonable facsimile of a silver table fork. First, he measured the Delano timber to determine how big he could make the fork. Then, using a real fork from the kitchen drawer and a set of dividers, Schmitt figured out measurements to use for the sculpture. With these dimensions, he sketched the fork design on a piece of scrap paper and later transferred them to the pine timber using a tape measure, straight edge and large Sharpie pen.

“First, I determined how big I wanted to make the fork and then did a detailed drawing, using a real fork as a model,” said Schmitt. “I then determined the angle of the tines, relative to the shank, faired the edges of two timbers where they would be, and then epoxied and bolted them together. After the epoxy set, I removed the bolts, and drew a template of the fork on the timbers.” Given the fork’s size — about 10 ft. long and weighing more than 100 lbs.— it was too large for most saws. “I then drilled three holes at the base of the tines and, using a chain saw, roughly cut out the shape of the fork,” he added. He “sculpted” the remainder using a power planer, gouge, chisel, rasp and sander. “To finish the piece, I sanded it with 80, 120 and 220 grit paper on a random orbital sander, rolled on several coats of shellac, and when the shellac had dried, I epoxied the entire piece several times,” said Schmitt. Knowing his creation would have to endure some raw Northeast weather, Schmitt sealed the pine with several layers of epoxy and let it set for a few days. “I then applied chrome aluminum paint, four coats, using spray cans from a local hardware store,” said Schmitt. The whole process took about two weeks from inception to finished giant utensil, he added. Raising The Fork Just before midnight on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, the couple took the fork to the intersection of Old Harbor and River Roads and lashed it to the stone pier that is located just behind the intersection. The fork attracted immediate attention, so much so, that when it was almost immediately removed by what Schmitt considers a teen prank before the end of the first weekend, (it was ultimately returned, undamaged) many people asked about its whereabouts. They told the Schmitts they were sorry it had disappeared. “I do not specifically know who removed the form over Memorial Day weekend,” said Schmitt. “I assumed it was a prank because the fork was not damaged in any way and was merely removed for display at another location.” Community interest over the missing fork prompted Schmitt to ask the Westport River * ! !

New Ramp Linking I-78, Garden State Parkway Opens New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner James Simpson Dec. 10 announced the completion and opening of the new ramp directly linking the Garden State Parkway (GSP) southbound with I-78 eastbound. “This project provides immense improvements to motorists in this area of New Jersey by creating a simple and efficient connection between two major roadways,” Simpson said. “An estimated 6,500 motorists a day will benefit from the improved access that this new ramp will provide, meaning less time spent in their cars and less congestion on local roadways.” The new flyover ramp for the first time allows GSP southbound motorists to directly access destinations to the east along New Jersey’s bustling I-78 corridor, such as Newark Liberty International Airport. Until now, motorists have been forced to exit onto I-78 westbound and use local exits as Uturns to double back onto I-78 eastbound — a maneuver that has resulted in significant delays and traffic congestion during busy travel times. Completed on budget and almost nine months ahead of schedule, the new ramp is the second major milestone to be reached in the ongoing, $149 million project to improve traffic flow around the interchange of the two superhighways located in Hillside and Union Townships, Union County and Irvington Township, Essex County. “By providing motorists with these direct connections,

NJDOT expects that traffic flow will be improved throughout the entire region, not only on the GSP and I-78, but also on highways such as Route 22 and Route 124 and the county and local roadway systems as well,” Simpson added. NJDOT also reopened all I-78 westbound Local lanes, as well as the crossover ramp from I-78 westbound Local to Express lanes near milepost 53. NJDOT awarded the project contract in April 2008, with Gannett Fleming Engineers serving as designer and Union Paving and Construction Co. as the builder. The first project milestone was reached in September 2009 when the flyover ramp connecting GSP northbound to I-78 westbound was

You can have it.’ So, they essentially donated it. It always impressed me how Lou gave time, expertise and support to a local environmental organization.” Mid-City Steel had perfect material for the stanchion — heavy 3 in. high-pressure pipe with walls nearly a half inch thick. To the pipe, a Westport Harbor welder affixed three U-bolts to which Schmitt bolted the fork. He then sealed the bolt holes permanently with epoxy plugs. Utilizing The Utensil In the meantime Tom and Kate Schmitt dug a hole 5 ft. deep and roughly 2 ft. in diameter at the location of the fork’s permanent installation. With mechanical assistance, on Oct. 29, they first raised the fork to an upright position and then lowered the stanchion base into the 5-ft. hole. After making sure the fork was plumb, Schmitt filled the hole with rocks and concrete, which, once hardened, secured the stanchion in place. At 3 p.m. on Oct. 30, Elizabeth Coxe, the artist, property owners, and several of the “Fork Folk” gathered for a brief dedication ceremony at which they sprinkled a bit of champagne, took photos and raised glasses to toast Westport’s latest piece of public art; wishing the fork in the road a “long tenure and many chuckles.” “My wife and I grew up in Western Pennsylvania. Less time. Less labor. Less overhead costs. These days, it seems every company is stretched to do more with less. While ‘less’ seems to be the operative word, it’s the ‘more’ that really counts. More efficiency. More productivity. And the big ‘more’ — more profit. To get “more”, companies are attempting to become increasingly streamlined and resourceful. The snow and ice management business is no stranger to the efficiency crunch, as it’s one industry that’s had to be more efficient each and every year in order to keep up with everything from government liability regulations to skyrocketing salt prices. The outside business environment combined with other factors, make it crucial, not just to plow snow, but plow it thoroughly and effectively. Whether you’re a construction or landscape contractor just entering the business or a seasoned plowing veteran who’s been in the game for 10 years, there have never been more reasons to reexamine efficiencies in your operation. One of the most important, if not the most vital, steps to starting up or improving a current snow and ice management operation is having the proper snowplow. The right plow will move more snow, increase operator ease and safety and reduce repair expenses, not to mention costly downtime. In addition, the right plow positively impacts the life of the machine powering it, whether it’s a small skid steer or larger loader. Many contractors, whether first time buyers or experienced in snow removal, get hung up on one thing — size. There are really two classes of thought. Some think the biggest, most expensive plow is the answer. Others approach the decision looking for the smallest, cheapest plow they can possibly use. But it’s more than a matter of size — snowplows now offer numerous advancements and features designed to maximize efficiency and help make plowing the white stuff lead to some serious green. With so many options, from different moldboard and hitch designs to cutting blades and side panels, the decision can be overwhelming, especially for a newbie to the industry. But regardless of how long you’ve been in the plowing game, simply taking the

time to look at features and evaluating how each can contribute to an improved bottom line will ensure the best plow choice is made. Sizing It Up Snowplows come in a variety of styles and sizes. Equipment mounted plows are commonly referred to as containment plows or box plows. They typically range in size from 6 ft. (1.8 m) for smaller machines such as skid steers, up to 30 ft. (9 m) for larger equipment like wheel loaders. Plow size primarily affects how much snow is removed and with what precision. Longer, one-piece containment plows will move larger quantities of snow the first time, but also will leave behind a significant amount as they ride on the highest ground. No pavement, whether a road or parking lot, is completely flat and level. Roads tend to be higher in the center and gradually slope downwards on each side, while parking lots have both raised and depressed areas scattered throughout. A longer plow will always rest at the highest point on a surface and float over lower areas — leaving behind inches of snow and resulting in the need for

They also are ideally suited for common, smaller pieces of equip-

To offer the benefit of moving more snow, yet with greater precision and less follow-up, some plow manufacturers have tweaked moldboard designs and offer sectional configurations. Independent and Group Effort Sectional moldboard designs consist of several pieces that, together, form one large surface area, allowing large amounts of snow to be removed in a single pass. What’s unique about these styles is the way the sec-

tions operate also to provide precise, efficient removal. Just about every plow on the market offers a trip edge feature. As an obstacle is encountered, the plow ‘trips’ or lifts slightly to clear the object without damaging the plow. The drawback? When the plow lifts up, it misses a whole pile of snow making re-plowing imminent. Sectional moldboard plows offer the same concept, but on an individual basis. Rather than the whole plow width tripping, only the individual section encountering an obstacle trips, leaving virtually no snow behind and eliminating the need for followup plowing. Not only does this reduce fuel and labor costs, plowing a clean lot the first time also will eliminate any liability issues and costs resulting from slip and fall claims. The independent movement of each ‘mini plow’ provides further efficiency and plowing precision by essentially letting the entire plow contour to any given surface. On sloped roads, the outer pieces rest at lower points, while those towards the center rise up as the pavement does. The same is true in parking lots. As the plow approaches a depressed or elevated area, the section will respond to the change in elevation and adjust itself accordingly. This ensures virtually no snow is left behind and essentially eliminates the need for a pick-up mounted plow or salting. In addition to providing better clearing performance, the individual tripping action helps prevent damage to the plow and machine if a small obstacle is encountered. er a plow with mechanical side panels. Panel of Experts Most containment-style plows are built with side panels, or wings, attached to both ends of the moldboard. The panels keep snow contained, eliminating excess amounts of snow rolling off the sides. But fixed side panels pose major challenges. Imagine a loader plowing full speed on a city street using a model with fixed side panels. The snow is deep and blowing across both lanes, so the driver can’t see that he’s approaching a concrete median on his left side. When he eventually hits it, something has to give — either the plow, the machine or the operator is going to absorb the impact. And the last thing any business owner wants is serious injury to an employee — not to mention the worker’s compensation costs that go along with those injuries. In the most extreme cases, an operator has been ejected from the machine’s cab upon such harsh impact. To address this serious problem, some manufactures offer plows with mechanical side panels. Mechanical side panels respond to impact from major obstructions like curbs, medians and manhole covers. Rather than hit these objects head-on, the side panels lift up and go over, clearing even tall obstacles. The benefit is three-fold, as it reduces damage to the equipment, plow and, most importantly, the operator. Beyond operator safety, there’s also the concern of equipment damage. The impact must be absorbed and thus the machine may end up damaged, resulting in significant expense. Skid steers, loaders, backhoes — any large piece of equipment —cost several thousands of dollars. It could take months of extra work for a contractor to recoup the cost of replacing an entire machine or even undergoing significant repairs. Mechanical side panels minimize the chance of equipment damage, saving on costly replacement and repairs, not to mention downtime. On that same note, a well-maintained snowplow with mechanical side panels can last several years even with inexperienced operators, positively impacting ROI. Features designed to enhance safety are certainly a top priority. But other advancements have been made specifically with the operator in mind. Get Hitched Think of a typical office workspace. many plowing professionals, the machine’s cab is their ‘office.’ These individuals spend hours every night in the cab, making it imperative to look for features that enhance comfort along with performance. Newer hitch designs take mental stress off the operator, also while enhancing the life of plow components — and reducing the added worry of maintenance and repair tasks. Plows are picked up and dropped down hundreds of times each night. Typical hitch designs force the operator to manually adjust the plow each time it’s dropped, making for a very challenging, time-consuming and often frustrating process, especially for inexperienced operators. Newer “drop-and-go” hitch designs do this automatically; hence the name. The operator can just drop the plow and go. The hitch design ensures the plow will lie correctly, each and every time extending plow life and ensuring a clean surface even in the case of inexperienced operators. Beyond operator ease, these hitches let the

plow and machine move independently of one another. As mentioned previously, rarely is pavement perfectly level. Take a parking lot — because the plow leads the way, it’s going to reach a raised point in the pavement before the machine does. Normally in this situation, the plow will rest itself on the higher ground and lean slightly forward. The action lifts the machine up off its front wheels, creating inefficient drag, while putting weight on only two tires. Overtime, this will result in uneven tire wear and more frequent replacement issues. This action also puts the majority of weight and stress on the plow, making premature wear — along with expensive replacement and downtime — inevitable. With newer hitches, the plow can lift up and adjust to the pavement, while the machine stays balanced on all four tires — keeping even wear on the tires and the plow. Especially when combined with sectional moldboard styles, this movement further lets the plow continuously adjust to changes in

But their lifespan can be cut drastically short with premature wear, a common occurrence with typical hitch designs that require manual adjustment. “Drop-and-go” styles are designed to lay flat and ensure the shoes do as well, leading to even wear and less replacement, hassle and headaches for the operator. Working together, these features significantly enhance performance and minimize maintenance expense, but one more factor and wear item, plays a significant role. The plow cutting edge affects, not only performance of the machine, but also the total lifecycle cost of the plow, and should be carefully considered. Cutting Edge Counts Every plow has a cutting edge. Designed to scrape and clean away compacted snow and ice, cutting edges are like the final icing on the cake — they add the all-important finishing touch and further reduce the need for re-plowing and salting. Cutting edges are available in a few different options. Ideal for cutting through and scraping snow and ice, steel cutting edges prove to be more effective and more durable than rubber options. On the downside, replacement of steel edges can be significantly more expensive, but that shouldn’t necessarily be a deterrent. In combination with sectional moldboards, steel cutting edges are very effective and can be replaced in only one section rather than across the entire length of the plow. This significantly reduces maintenance costs while providing all the benefits of the steel edge. Clearly, it’s not necessarily just one feature that will be the key to productive plowing, rather the combined efforts of several. In the grand scheme of things, each feature is just one piece of the total ROI puzzle. Whatever your reason, plowing snow can be a great business opportunity or ideal way to utilize idle equipment and workers during the winter months. The key for anyone performing this task is efficiency, both in terms of the plow and machine. And a plow with the right features will lead to both. JLG Industries Wins Contractor’s Choice Awards JLG Industries Inc.’s, G12-55A telehandler won the gold and the 1350SJP boom lift with skywelder took home silver in the Contractor’s Choice Awards given by Roads & Bridges magazine. Winners were announced in the July 2010 issue of the publication and awards were presented at the opening reception for Roads & Bridges Live, held on Oct. 12, 2010. “It’s an honor to accept these awards from Roads & Bridges magazine and to have two of our products recognized by contractors,” said Chris Mellott, JLG Industries vice president, sales and market development for the Americas. “We aim to deliver the best products to our customers to help them accomplish their jobs efficiently. These awards reaffirm our efforts to meet our customers’ needs.” The JLG G12-55A telehandler features a 12,000-lb. (5,443 kg) carrying capacity and up to 55-ft. (16.7 m) lift height. Recently, a reader named Jim Cornell sent me a postcard with a picture of insects on it, posing an interesting question. (No, the insects were not posing a question. As far as I know.) Jim stated that he, like every other American above the age of 4, is on a low-fat diet, and he noted that we have become basically a non-fat nation. This is true; virtually all edible substances, and many automotive products, are now marketed as being “low-fat” or “fat-free.” Americans are obsessed with fat content. DOCTOR: Mrs. Stoatbonker, you will die within hours unless you take this antibiotic. PATIENT: Is it fat-free? DOCTOR: I don’t Know. PATIENT: I’ll just have a Diet Pepsi. So anyway, Jim, after noting that “millions of pounds of formerly fat-rich food is now defatted,” asks: “What are they doing with all that fat?” Jim, that is an excellent question, and I intend to answer it just as soon as I have written enough words to make a column. (Don’t you wish you had a job like mine? All you have to do is think up a certain number of words! Plus, you can repeat words! And they don’t even have to be true!) First, however, we need to consider exactly what “fat” is. Just off the top of my head, without glancing at a dictionary, I would define fat as “any of various mixtures of solid or semisolid triglycerides found in adipose animal tissue or in the seeds of plants.” A “triglyceride,” as I vaguely recall from my high-school years, is “any of a group of esters, CH2(OOCR1)CH(OOCR2)CH2(OOCR3),

Where’s The Beef? (Low Fat) derived from glycerol and three fatty acid radicals.” But what does this mean? One thing it means, of course, is that “Three Fatty Acid Radicals” would be an excellent name for a rock band. But it also means that fat is some kind of chemical item that nature puts inside certain plants and animals to make them taste better. A good rule of thumb is: The more fat something contains, the better it tastes. This is why we eat hamburgers, but we do not eat ants. Ants have a very low fat content, so nobody eats them except unfortunate animals such as birds, who, because of a design flaw, cannot use drive-thru windows. Human beings, on the other hand, enjoy hamburgers, because they (the hamburgers) come from cows, which are notoriously fat. You will never see a cow voluntarily going anywhere near an Abdominizer. Of course, there have been efforts to make low-fat “hamburgers.” In researching this column, I purchased a product called “Harvest Burgers,” which are “All Vegetable Protein Patties” manufactured by the Green Giant Corp.

Upon examining the package, the first thing I noticed was that the Jolly Green Giant has apparently had plastic surgery. He no longer looks like the “Ho! Ho! Ho!” guy; he now looks like Paul McCartney on steroids. Check it out. The second thing I noticed is that the key ingredient in Harvest Burgers is “soy.” This ingredient is found in many low-fat foods, and I think it’s time that the Food and Drug Administration told us just what the hell it is. A plant? A mineral? An animal? Are there enormous soy ranches in Nebraska with vast herds of soys bleating and suckling their young? As a consumer, I’d like some answers. I don’t want to discover years from now that “soy” is an oriental word meaning “compressed ant parts.” This is not intended as a criticism of the “Harvest Burger,” which is a well-constructed, extremely cylindrical frozen unit of brown foodlike substance. The package states that it contains “83 percent less fat than ground beef”; I believe this, because it also tastes exactly 83 percent less good than ground beef. Nevertheless I highly recommend it for anybody who needs more “soy” or a

backup hockey puck. Oh, sure, there will be people who will claim that soy patties taste “almost as good” as real hamburgers. These are the same people who have convinced themselves that rice cakes taste “almost as good” as potato chips, when in fact eating rice cakes is like chewing on a foam coffee cup, only less filling. You could fill a container with roofing shingles and put it in the supermarket with a sign that said “ZERO-FAT ROOFING SHINGLES,” and these people would buy it and convince themselves it tasted “almost as good” as French toast. Yes, we have become a low-fat society, which brings us back to the question posed by Jim Cornell: What’s being done with all the fat? Jim offers this theory: “I suspect that they’re dumping it in some small town in Texas or Mexico.” No way, Jim. Our government would never allow a major fat-dumping facility in the same region where we’re storing the dead UFO aliens. No, the truth is that the fat is being loaded into giant tanker trucks, transported by night and pumped into: my thighs. There was no choice; Marlon Brando was already full. But I’m happy to do my part for a leaner America, so don’t bother to thank me. Are you going to finish those fries? Postscript: After I wrote this column, my editor, Tom Shroder, sent me a note saying he thinks he read somewhere that ants do contain fat. I think he’s wrong, but since we’re both professional journalists, neither of us will look it up. If you’re in the market for a dump truck, it’s important to do your homework. Unlike some other vocations, dump truck specifications are very regionalized. What works in one area of the country will not work in another. Your first piece of homework: Find out what the length and weight regulations are in your state. Try to take maximum advantage of the weight laws to maximize payload. Some states, mostly in the West, require compliance with the Federal Bridge Formula; others don’t. This will have a big influence on how the axles are set up and spaced. “A Bridge Formula truck will tend to be longer to spread the weight,” said Samantha Parlier, vocational marketing manager of Kenworth Truck Company in Kirkland, Wash. “You may need to have lift axles, but there are different rules on how much load you can add with lift axles. And some states don’t allow lift axles. Your local Kenworth dealer will know the rules and regulations.” In states where you don’t need to comply with the Bridge Formula, you can spec trucks shorter and with higher axle ratings, making them more maneuverable on job sites.

2010 Engines - SCR or EGR It’s also important to understand how the 2010 federal engine emissions standards may require some changes to be made when spec’ing for new truck purchases compared to your current dump truck spec. “The extent of these changes depends upon each dump truck operator’s choice between two available engine technologies, which may also affect truck performance and operating costs over its lifetime,” Parlier said. Operators can choose an engine aftertreatment approach that utilizes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology in combination with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), or an in-cylinder approach through increased EGR. Both technologies use EGR to circulate a portion of an engine’s exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to remove particulate matter from the exhaust. A critical difference is the amount of exhaust gas that is recirculated back to the engine; the enhanced EGR approach uses a significantly higher level of recirculated exhaust gases. SCR also mixes a reactant — most commonly a solution of urea and de-ionized water known as diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) — with the nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust

gases. The exhaust then passes through a catalyst, where the DEF reacts with the NOx to convert it into nitrogen and water. Increased EGR reduces NOx by boosting the amount of exhaust gases in the engine cylinder, then slowing and cooling the combustion process and burning off pollutants. The increased heat created with the enhanced EGR approach requires greater engine cooling capacity. Increased EGR also requires more fuel to be injected into the DPF for active regenerations. “SCR doesn’t rely on engine heat to treat emissions, so SCR-based engines offer the advantage of higher fuel economy,” Parlier said. “Since SCR doesn’t narrow the engine’s maximum speed range for optimum efficiency, or its ‘sweet spot,’ to attain emission reductions, fleets also can still maintain fuel economy at lower or higher engine speeds.” According to Parlier, it is important for operators choosing SCR to consider DEF tank capacity and placement. “To support SCR system integration, Kenworth has a range of exhaust and DEF tank sizes and locations designed for dump trucks. This helps dump operators to maintain their wheelbase and body configuration when spec’ing Kenworth trucks with 2010 engines,” Parlier said. “For dump trucks where truck frame space is often critical, Kenworth provides a 5.6-gallon tank with a clear back of cab option. The tank has a range of more than 1,500 miles between refillings. When combined with a Kenworth SCR and DPF package under the cab access step, there is essentially no impact to the customer.” Not all SCR technology engines are the same, however. “An aftertreatment catalyst using copper zeolite is much more efficient than one with iron zeolite at reducing NOx at normal engine operating temperatures,” Parlier said. “Engines using copper zeolite may enjoy up to an additional 2 percent fuel economy improvement over engines using iron zeolite.” PACCAR engines and Cummins engines both use copper zeolite.

tem for heavy duty Class 8 trucks can offer a third option. For those operators hauling particularly heavy bulk loads, the Westport GX, based on the Cummins ISX diesel engine, is available in power ratings of 400 to 475 hp (298 to 354 kW) and torque ratings of 1,450 to 1,750 lb.ft. Plus, the LNG fuel tanks can be configured to suit the operators’ range requirements. Operators who don’t need that high of horsepower or torque can spec the Cummins ISL G engine, which is rated at 320-hp (238 kW) and 1,000 lb.-ft of torque. The ISL G engine operates on either LNG or compressed natural gas (CNG). It uses a maintenance-free, three-way catalyst and is 2010 EPA- and CARB-compliant without the use of SCR technology or a DPF. “Deciding on whether to go with CNG- or LNG-powered trucks may be determined by the availability of the fuel in your area,” Parlier said. “With many local transit and government agencies using compressed natural gas to power buses and trucks, sources of CNG fuel may be easier to find in some areas than LNG.” Operators also should consider that fueling CNG-powered trucks doesn’t require special training as it does with LNG trucks, she added. However, LNG fuel has a higher energy density than CNG since it is a liquid, so an LNG-powered truck can go further on the same amount of fuel. Neither LNG nor CNG has the high energy density of diesel fuel, but both are cleaner fossil fuels, so they produce less carbon pollution than diesel fuel. Also, both are domestically produced, so they have the potential to reduce reliance on foreign oil. The drawback can be a significantly higher cost engine, Parlier said. But some state and local air quality control agencies may have limited programs with grants to help offset the additional cost of the engine technology. Plus, by deleting the additional weight associated with the SCR or EGR emission control systems, a natural gas-powered truck may be able to carry more payload. Load and Hauling Questions Some key questions need to be answered

concerning the loads that you expect to haul. For example, you will need a different chassis spec when hauling bulk loads such as asphalt, sand or gravel than you would if you hauled mostly demolition debris. If you’re planning on visiting a lot of demolition sites or are hauling heavy rock, you will need to have the body and suspension beefed up to handle the pounding it will take from the large masses going in the dump body. Your body supplier will have input on this. The hauling question relates to the environment or roads you are operating in. Are you going to spend a lot of time on very rough job sites or will most of the hauling be long distances on smooth gravel and sealed roads? “If you will be going off-road a lot into rough terrain, you’ll need a suspension that is heavier duty and has more articulation,” Parlier advised. “But if you’re hauling longer distances, you’ll need to consider the trade-off between the ease of dumping and the ability to haul more load per trip. For example, a transfer dump will allow you to haul more with one driver, but it will take longer to unload. Double bottom-trailers carry a lot of payload, too, but with those you’re limited on where you can drop the load — it’s a lot harder to dump gravel into a hole for a swimming pool, for instance, with bottom dumps.” The Drivetrain One of the big mistakes many people make with dump truck engines is they spec too much power, said Parlier. “You should get just enough horsepower to do the job. Generally, 350 to 400 hp is plenty for most applications. Extra horsepower just uses more fuel, puts more strain on the rest of the drivetrain, and adds cost up front. “If you go with a smaller 13-liter block, you save around 700 pounds over a 15-liter block,” Parlier said. The transmission installed with the engine needs a lot of ratio range. You need a low enough gear to get out of a hilly jobsite and high enough top gear to attain decent highway speeds. The Eaton Fuller 8LL transmission is a common truck spec, but she sug-

gested an 18-speed transmission for larger and heavier trucks. “The 8LL gives you two low gears for startability off-road and enough top-end range for the highway. But if you are hauling over 90,000 pounds, you should consider an 18-speed because you get much closer splits from bottom to top.” The typical dump truck uses rear axles rated at 46,000 lbs. (20,865 kg). This covers most trucks, from 14/16-yard solo dumps through combinations up to 110,000 GCW.

For those operators looking for an alternative to a standard diesel engine, natural gas-powered engines ... can offer a third option.

Another thing to remember for operating off-road is air filtration. Lots of drivers love the look of dual polished external air cleaners, and these provide excellent filtration with low air restriction. But they are quite expensive compared with under-hood air cleaners. A little money spent up front on a better air cleaner is cheap compared to a dusted engine. And better filtration will usually mean longer life for the filter elements. For example, dual 15-in. air cleaners will last more than 7 times as long as a single 11-in. underhood air cleaner before needing replacement. Weight Watching If you are hauling a lot of loads per day, cutting vehicle weight can be profitable. You can slim down by spec’ing components — such as wheels, air tanks and clutch housings — in aluminum rather than steel. “Use the smallest fuel tank you can get away with,” Parlier added. “Some operators can get away with a 56-gallon tank, but most

will need at least 75 to 90 gallons to get through a day.” You can also save valuable pounds by choosing the right suspension. “The difference can be as high as 400 pounds,” Parlier said of the different suspension options. To avoid hauling around extra steel in the vehicle frame, have the dealer work with a Kenworth application engineer so that you only get enough frame where you need it. You will typically need a strong crossmember at the back of the cab to strengthen the hoist mounting area. If you are planning to add lift axles later, make sure the dealer adds that information to the order so that the frame can be prepared for them. But remember that many of these weight savers will cost more up front. You will need to balance that against the gains you expect to make hauling more payload. Driver Performance Items Finally, consider a few driver performance-related items. To get the best turn performance and road feel from steering, Parlier recommended dual small gears rather than a large single steering gear. The dual system also will last longer than a single system. Try to spec as much glass area as possible. “Kenworth DayLite doors give a larger glass area in the main door window,” Parlier said. “You also want plenty of mirrors.” On a topic related to windows, Parlier suggested picking low-replacement cost windshields when they’re available. “Most vocational fleets replace at least one windshield side per truck per year. Twopiece flat-glass windshields with roped-in seals can be replaced in half an hour for a total cost of under a hundred dollars. This can save thousands of dollars over the life of the truck.” With lift axles, it’s smart to get a six-channel ABS system. “Lift axles, especially steerable ones, are normally over-braked for the load,” Parlier said. “By including them in the ABS system, they’re less likely to lock up and you reduce tire flat spotting.” To enhance truck productivity and the driving experience, consider adding a navigation system Parlier said.
