Murphy Tractor & Equipment Holds Holiday Open Houses
M
urphy Tractor & Equipment Company held a round of Holiday Open Houses at four of its branch locations in Northern Ohio in December. The celebrations kicked off Dec. 7 at its Brunswick branch and then moved to Canton on Dec. 9, followed by the Painesville branch on Dec. 14 and finishing up in Youngstown on Dec. 16. According to Branch Manager Mark Hash, the events were held as a way to thank the company’s customers and let them know that, while its name has changed, it is still offering the same qual-
ity John Deere equipment, parts and service provided by the sales and service representatives they’ve come to know and trust. While John Deere equipment took center stage, representatives also were on hand from Allu Screener Crusher Attachments and Zanetis Planer Attachments to discuss their company’s equipment. Along with a good look at Murphy Tractor & Equipment’s lineup of products, attendees were treated to food, refreshments and door prizes. (

State Set to Widen Segment of I-71 North of Columbus COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The state plans to start work on widening a section of Interstate 71 that can slow the drive between Cleveland and Columbus. The highway in each direction narrows from three lanes to two for 27 mi. in counties north of Columbus. The addition of extra lanes has been approved by an Ohio
Department of Transportation panel that sets priorities for road projects. The work will be done in three stages, with construction expected to begin next summer. The Columbus Dispatch reports the first phase got a green light Dec. 9 and is estimated to cost $46.9 million, to be paid for through gas taxes and federal grants.

Wetlands Restoration Project Impacts Ohio Farmland Doug Putnam’s wetlands restoration project was typical of the more than 10,000 currently under way throughout the United States — that is, until it took on a new meaning and purpose. The 65 acre farm owned by Putnam and his family is located on the north side of state Route 385, two miles west of Roundhead, Ohio, in Hardin County. At times it had been rented out as a pasture for cattle, but, “It did not lend itself to crop farming,” Putnam said. “From the high end to the low end the property dropped 33 feet.” In March 2007, the Putnam tract was approved for the Wetlands Reserve Program, a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore and enhance wetlands on their property. With technical and financial support provided by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the goal is to establish long-term conservation and wildlife practices and protection.
Outdoor Memorial Just as work was about to begin, the Putnams’ only son, 27-year-old Bryan, died unexpectedly. At that point the wetlands project was dedicated as a memorial to Bryan. “It became a labor of love for me,” Putnam said. The Putnams laid out the initials “BP” with wetland features, including two serpentine trenches that hold water and form the outer perimeter of the initials. Work began in the summer of 2007 when Putnam repaired and replaced existing drainage tile that was in the field, followed by the building of 13 ponds to attract migratory waterfowl and provide aquatic vegetation. December rain filled the ponds. The next spring more than 5,000 trees were planted. Next the property was seeded with annual and perennial ryegrass, orchard grass, bluegrass, timothy and red clover. In
Doug Putnam.
the fall of 2008, Putnam leveled the drainage tile trench backfill with a dozer blade, followed by fine grading and preparation for seeding with a soil conditioner.
A Bobcat soil conditioner was just one of many attachments that Doug Putnam operated with his Toolcat 5600 to create a wetlands restoration project in memory of his son, Bryan.
5600 Is ‘Big Help’ AToolcat 5600 utility work machine, purchased from Bobcat of Lima, was used extensively to complete much of the project. “This was my first experience with Bobcat equipment and I couldn’t be more pleased,” Putnam said. “The Toolcat 5600 compares favorably with all the equipment I have ever used. It was a big help. It allowed me to do things that no other piece of equipment will do.” He used the utility work machine to remove trees, grade with the dozer blade, finish grade with the soil conditioner, pick up shrubs with the grapple bucket and transport supplies with the pallet fork. He expected the development of the project to continue for several years, with the utility work machine playing an important role in future construction and maintenance. “It’s a pleasure to operate,” he said. ODOT...
Proposed New Construction Unveiled for Major Projects Connecting investments in new roads, bridges, bus routes, rail lines and airport access to the creation of new jobs and economic development, Ohio’s Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC) is recommending $167.6 million in new funding commitments for several multi-modal projects across the state. The TRAC — the bi-partisan independent committee that assists the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) in selecting its largest investments - unveiled its 2011 draft listing of major new construction projects this morning in Columbus. The TRAC is proposing that ODOT invest more than $74.6 million in new engineering, design and right-of-way costs for projects still in the planning stages across the state. Some of these new state funding commitments add to investments already being made by local communities.
Among the largest projects to receive new funding are $27 million to continue design of the new Brent Spence Bridge carrying Interstates 71 and 75 over the Ohio River in Cincinnati. Among the largest projects to receive new funding are $27 million to continue design of the new Brent Spence Bridge carrying Interstates 71 and 75 over the Ohio River in Cincinnati and $20 million for detailed design work on the State Route 7 Chesapeake Bypass to help ease congestion and spur economic development in Southern Ohio. The TRAC is also proposing to invest more than $90 million in new construction, including $35 million for the first phase of the Cincinnati Streetcar plan, a project that would connect the city’s two largest employment centers of Uptown and Downtown with electric streetcars operating on fixed rail. Also being proposing is $15 million in new funding to help the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority build the new Mahoning Road Transit Corridor in Canton; more than $13 million to partner with the Lucas County Engineer on building a new and safer railroad-roadway underpass at a hightraffic location on McCord Road in the Toledo area; and more than $14 million on a similar railroad-roadway underpass on State Route 58 in Wellington. Other projects proposed for additional construction funding include $6 million to widen U.S. Route 42 in Strongsville and more than $7 million to add bus lanes on U.S. Route 6, U.S. 20 and State Route 2 in the Cleveland area. To improve Ohio’s logistics connections for shipping freight, the TRAC is also proposing new engineering and design work on a multi-modal freight rail extension to the
Dayton International Airport and a new roadway connector from U.S. 23 to the growing Rickenbacker Airport and Intermodal Terminal south of Columbus. The TRAC also voted to FAST TRAC construction of a third travel lane on I-71 in Morrow County. FAST TRAC was introduced earlier this year by the TRAC as an investment tool to cut red tape and consider important transportation projects on an “as needed” basis, instead of the typical four-year planning horizon. ODOT hopes to award a design-build contract on the first
phase of this I-71 project in the next several months —worth approximately $46.9 million — meaning construction on the new third lane in each direction between State Route 95 and the Richland County line could begin as soon as next year. ODOT and the TRAC will now begin to accept public comments on the recommended funding in the 2011 Draft TRAC Project List, with a vote to finalize the list expected in March. The complete 2011 Draft TRAC Project List is available online at www.dot.state.oh.us/trac.
