It’s a wrap for the 2022 N.Y.S. Highway & Public Works Expo and wow, thank you, what a successful show it was. The Expo not only had fantastic exhibitor participation but also record-breaking attendance numbers. Yeah, I know … but was it really, though? Absolutely. Actually, the Expo shattered all previous attendance numbers with more than 1,800 attendees and more than 150 exhibitors. Even a bus load of highway superintendents from Niagara County attended the big show at the New York State Fairgrounds on Oct. 19. More than 100,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space filled with all the latest and greatest highway and municipal equipment and services to help all of you do your jobs more productively and efficiently kept both attendees and exhibitors busy and happy. Innovative new products, like the PowerVac were on display. The PowerVac is a vacuum truck that comes in the form of an attachment to an excavator. The latest innovations in GPS technology also were on full display. While there were a host of cool door prizes raffled off during the Expo, two Grand Prize winners emerged: Mark Savage of the town of Theresa highway department won two tickets to see the Buffalo Bills vs. the New England Patriots on Jan. 8, 2023, and Kenneth Cook of the Montezuma highway department won two tickets to the 2023 NASCAR race weekend at Watkins Glen International Speedway. The New York State Association of Town Superintendents of Highways (NYSAOTSOH) again had an exhibit to meet up with current members and to promote the association to those who are not yet members. And as the cliché goes, last but not least, all of us at Superintendent’s Profile offer our sincerest gratitude to all of you who attended and exhibited. Even in this digital world of ours today, this year’s successful event proves that it’s still great, productive and fun to get together in person for these shows. We look forward to bringing you many more years of the N.Y.S. Highway & Public Works Expo and many, many more monthly profiles. Full coverage of the 2022 N.Y.S. Highway & Public Works Expo begins on page 48. Thank you and see you all next year. P

Superintendent

H

Jeff Martin

and the Town of Mayfield Highway Department

Mayfield Beach on the Sacandaga Reservoir in the town of Mayfield.

Jeff Martin, superintendent of highways of the town of Mayfield, is a straight shooter, dedicated, hard-working, in-your-face (in a good way) kind of guy. Not one to shy away from controversy, Jeff is known for speaking his mind and getting things done. Born and raised in this history-laden town, Jeff graduated from Mayfield High School in 1998. “That’s where I met my wife,” he said. “She was a senior and I was in the 10th grade. I also had a best friend who lived on a farm. I worked there from when I was 12 to 16 years old. During that time, I’d be on the farm driving tractors, bulldozers and loaders. I’d also bale hay, mow, milk cows and pick rock. They were like my family. I bought property off them and now I live on the farm I grew up on. “What’s interesting about that is that several of the more recent superintendents all have backgrounds in farming. You learn so much at a young age like when there’s a problem and you can come up with a solution. You learn lots of different things. Never doing the same thing all the time. It’s like being a jack of all trades and master of none.”

The town of Mayfield highway department’s facilities include 12,000 to 13,000 sq. ft. of garage space and another 9,000 sq. ft. in storage. from page 9

After graduation, Jeff went to work for his father-in-law’s business, Towns and Leather. “Now, it’s my wife’s business. I retired because I got dilated cardiomyopathy. My heart should be four centimeters. Mine was 8.9 and my pump function was down to 10. I go to Cleveland Clinic every six months because I was on the heart transplant list. Not anymore. Now it’s up to 45. My folks like to hear that.” Jeff worked full time for Towns and Leather for 21 years. Starting from the bottom, he worked in the factory cleaning, plowing and taking care of the maintenance. Then, he went through each process of manufacturing leather. In 2008, he became senior vice president of production facilities while supervising 90 people in a factory that sent him all over the world. continued on page 16 12

So, how did he end up in the super’s chair? After retiring from Towns and Leather, Jeff became the highway superintendent for the town of Mayfield in 2020. “It was like a dream come true. I love this town. I’ve always wanted to do something for my community at some point when I got older. That’s why I had to run for office.” Jeff and his wife, Tricia, have been married for 20 years. “She has a business degree from Siena College and is the vice president of customer service for Towns and Leather. She’s my best friend. I wouldn’t be half the man I am without her.” Tricia added this about her husband’s job. “I couldn’t be prouder of Jeff doing something he’s passionate about.

I can tell he found his calling helping people, making safer roads for his family and friends, running large equipment and being outside in the beautiful Adirondacks.” The couple are proud parents of two daughters. Kendra, 18, recently graduated from high school. She wants to study creative writing in Orlando, Fla. Kayden, 14, is a high school freshman. In his spare time, Jeff loves hunting, fishing and riding snowmobiles around his house. “Adirondack Park is a beautiful area here. I’ve also gone hunting in Ohio and fishing on Sacandaga Lake.” When asked about retirement, Jeff says it’s too early to tell. “I like things the way they are … for now.” continued on page 24

Tom Perham of the town of Mayfield highway department mows the side of the roads. from page 16

The Job “The town of Mayfield is the second largest town in Fulton County,” Jeff said. “Our department’s facilities include 12,000 to 13,000 square feet of garage space and another 9,000 square feet in storage. There also are eight bays; a salt shed that holds roughly 500 tons under cover at one time; my office; and a lunch/break room.” As highway superintendent, it’s Jeff’s job to maintain the town’s 57 lane miles of road — two are gravel and 55 are paved. That translates into six plowing routes that take approximately 3½ hours to complete. A seven-man crew helps Jeff serve the town’s 6,600 residents. His staff includes Chris Warner, deputy; Bill Sweet, roads; Dave Horning, garbage; Tom Perham, roads; Gordan Daily, mechanic; Tyler Garrigan, garbage; and Zach Wilson. continued on page 30 24

“I’ll say one thing about my group of guys. They’re all from the town except one. They care about what they do and want to make it a safe, better place to live. They’re amazing. There may be moments when there’s not a lot going on, but when it comes time for an emergency, they’re there, making my job easier.” Under Jeff’s guidance, the town of Mayfield highway department functions on a total operating budget of a little more than $1 million. That includes salaries and benefits for its employees and an annual CHIPS allocation, Pave New York and Extreme Winter Recovery of $517,000. To fulfill its responsibilities, the department uses a convoy of equipment. When it comes to his fleet, “The town has always bought new,” Jeff said. “The first thing I bought used was a bucket truck from someone in town. I paid $2,500 for it. It’s from the ‘80s but still works great. We don’t use it all the time. So, it doesn’t wear as quickly. continued on page 34

“The last year or two, I bought a $190,000 garbage truck. It was a bigger one than what we had before. The other one was broken down all the time. Our 2008 one got pounded on. They’re stopping and going on and they were going right through the day. It made it so much easier buying a new one because we were breaking down and being late for picking up.” What would Jeff’s dream piece of equipment be? “We have everything we need to do our job safely.” Like most highway superintendents, Jeff admits that technology can be a good thing. “The only computer we really use is when we’re salting the roads. There’s a computer inside the truck that tells us how much we’re putting out per lane mile. A lot of supers do that or have that piece of equipment

and many are moving toward that. I just upgraded mine last year because it saves us a lot of money and salt and it’s handy. You can put GPS on them and there’s lots of things you can do with that computer inside the truck.” When it comes to the job, Jeff admits it’s “everything I expected. I love it. I love being outside. I was made to do this job. I should have done it a long time ago.” What would he say it’s the worst part? “The paperwork. It’s crazy. I do everything on my own — the payroll, everything. Most superintendents are doing it themselves these days. I had a secretary at Townsend whom I truly miss. Sometimes us guys definitely need one. Women pay more attention to stuff than we do.” What’s been the most difficult? “Making everyone happy.” continued on page 38

The most important? “Making the town safe.” Your proudest moment? “Finishing a job.” What led him to seek the position? “I always wanted to do something for my community that made a difference.” What does he love the most? “Working with the guys. I’m down in the hole. I’m proud of that. A manager who gets down in the hole and gets dirty with his crew. How they work together, our team and they’re always willing to help. No matter what.” What has he changed? “The atmosphere just by talking to them, treat-

ing them like humans and asking for their ideas.” What experiences from his background have proven helpful in Jeff’s current position? “Experience in managing large projects, people and machinery and responsible for finding solutions to problems.” When asked to describe his job in one word, Jeff hesitated for a moment before answering, “Satisfying. I literally love what I’m doing. That’s what makes it worthwhile. Every day is a new adventure. You come in and think it’s going to be a quiet day then all hell breaks loose. A tree’s down, everything’s flooded. You never know.” continued on page 42

Like most highway supers, when it’s all said and done Jeff wants to be remembered for “doing a good job, helping people and keeping the roads safe.” The Town of Mayfield Mayfield is a town in Fulton County, northeast of Gloversville and Johnstown. The town also contains a village named Mayfield. The land that is now the town was part of the Mayfield Patent of 42

1770. The town was established in 1793 from the town of Caughnawaga in Montgomery County before the formation of Fulton County in 1838. It was one of the first three such towns formed. Part of Mayfield was taken in 1805 to form the town of Wells (now in Hamilton County). An additional part was added to Wells in 1812. Mayfield was reduced once again in 1842 to form the town of Perth. The early economy was based on lumber and leather production. The Oliver Rice House located on Old NY 30 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. continued on page 46

he 2022 NYS Highway & Public Works Expo is in the books, and it was a resounding success with more than 1,800 in attendance. Representatives from highway departments from as far away as Shelter Island in the Hamptons to a bus load of highway superintendents from Niagara County attended the big show at the New York State Fairgrounds. With more than 100,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space and more than 150 exhibits, each year the N.Y.S. Highway & Public Works Expo proves to be the largest collection of highway and municipal equipment on display in the northeast. Innovative new products were seen for the very first time, like the PowerVac, the vacuum truck that comes in the form of an attachment to your excavator, as well as some of the very latest innovations in GPS technology. Any item that a highway department could have a need for was available at this year’s show: storage facilities, trucks & truck bodies, earthmoving and excavating equipment, mowers, tractors — all from every manufacturer imaginable. Those of us at the Superintendents Profile who work hard to make this event possible thank you all for showing up.  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2022 Superintendent’s Profile. Western Products Introduces New Lineup of Pusher Plows

Western’s new line of pusher plows — the PILE DRIVER with TRACE EDGE technology — was introduced this summer.

By Ruksana Hussain CEG CORRESPONDENT

An industry leader in snow and ice control products, and well known among snow and ice professionals in the western and midwestern parts of the United States, Milwaukee, Wis.-based Western Products has had a busy few years despite the pandemic, labor shortages, supply chain issues and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. “We continue to talk with snow and ice contractors and understand what they need to be successful. As labor becomes harder and harder to find, contractors are looking to get more snow moved and ice melted with less people. This means using larger vehicles like wheel loaders, skid steers and tractors with high-capacity plows,” said Andrew McArdle, vice president of marketing. A whole new line of pusher plows — the Western PILE DRIVER with TRACE EDGE technology — was introduced this summer. This terrain-response advanced cutting edge is made up of independent, 2-ft. sections that follow the plowable surface for a clean scrape. It is available in 8-, 10- and 12-ft. widths this winter with 14- and 16-ft. widths available in 2023. The TRACE EDGE works in conjunction with the oscillating skis that feature a reversible, bolt-on shoe for easy serviceability. The new line of pushers will be made in a new facility at Western Product’s Milwaukee campus, where the company continues to manufacture its snow and ice equipment, in addition to its manufacturing facilities in Rockland, Maine, and Madison Heights, Mich. “It’s all about understanding your accounts, your labor and your equipment. Using the ‘right tool for the job’ is important to maximize 62

efficiency,” said McArdle. “Snow and ice equipment technology has evolved over the years — whether that is the introduction of winged plows and v-plows to increase productivity over traditional straight blade plows, liquid brine spray systems to reduce the use of salt and increase contractor profitability or the use of non-truck equipment like UTVs, skid steers, tractors and loaders, when paired with pusher plows to create flexibility and increase productivity in their fleet. All our products are designed for maximum efficiency and productivity. Depending on the property type and tasks at hand, you can assemble your perfect mix of products and vehicles to do more with less.” Founded in 1943 as Western Welding and Manufacturing, the company was purchased in 1950 by Doug Seaman and rebranded as Western Products. Seaman then formed Douglas Dynamics in 1977 and that became the parent company. From custom welding jobs for large manufacturers, Western Product’s focus turned to manufacturing snow and ice removal equipment. Today, the company is recognized for its quality products, including plows, hopper spreaders and tailgate spreaders for trucks and nontruck vehicles and decades of world-class service and expertise. For Western, 2021 was great for business overall. “Our dealer partners continue to see high demand despite limited vehicle supplies. By staying close to our partners and building ‘every product, every day’, we were able to ensure we were building the right products to answer the demand of our dealers and snow and ice contractors,” said McArdle. “Our business treats our suppliers and logistic partners as an extension of our employees, and therefore we were able to get what we needed to continue building and shipping products. sourcing and supply chain team is the best in the industry. They have done an amazing job ensuring we have the right suppliers and materials to keep our manufacturing facilities up and running.” The company also announced a new president to its commercial snow and ice control division in September 2021 — Mark Van Genderen. He joined Douglas Dynamic in 2020 as vice president of business development and draws on more than 21 years of leadership at Harley-Davidson Motor Company, delivering impactful results focusing on product development, global sales and marketing, and channel strategy execution. Having developed and led large business segments, his expertise lies in cross-functional commercial strategy development, brand expansion and sales growth. Add to that, this year, Douglas Dynamics was once again recognized as a Top Workplace for the 13th consecutive year by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Boasting a staff of 1,800 worldwide, it is one of only nine other companies that have been recognized annually as a Top Workplace since the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel started the program 13 years ago. The company was ranked 15th in the medium-sized workplace category. And it’s not only the employee culture that has earned it these well-deserved accolades, but also the social cause work that the company undertakes in the community. Last year saw two parties battling back and forth for the custom plow on auction. “We were able to settle on a bid that both parties accepted, allowing us to donate more than $20,000 to Camp Hometown Heroes. This was our largest donation to date,” said McArdle. “This year, we will be auctioning off an 8-ft. Western Piledriver. The auction will end on Veteran’s Day in November, so watch our Facebook page for all the details.” You also can head to the new Western website that launched earlier this year, featuring enhanced navigation and an improved layout, implementing the latest digital best practices, and ensuring a strong foundation for future brand growth. Some of the features include better upload times and ADA compliance; a restructured homepage leading straight to the most sought-after products and information; and a simplified photo and video gallery. McArdle added, “Looking beyond 2022, we are focused on providing products and services that aim to make snow and ice contractors more efficient and combats the high salt usage that pervades the industry. We continue to look at new ways to allow snow and ice contractors to move more snow and melt more ice with less labor. Be on the lookout for exciting announcements next year.”  P

Bobcat Advances Automated Ops With Autonomous Mower

Bobcat Company is accelerating its innovations in the landscaping and grounds maintenance industries with the announcement of its new autonomous mowing system. The company also is announcing the advancement of its autonomous technology and operations through a strategic investment in Greenzie, an autonomous software company for commercial lawn mowers and outdoor power equipment. “Innovation is part of the Bobcat DNA. We invented the compact equipment industry more than 60 years ago, and we continue to reimagine the future of the industry today,” said Joel Honeyman, vice president of global innovation of Bobcat Company. “Through this investment with Greenzie, we can accelerate our development of operator-assisted and automated solutions to help our customers be more productive on the job site or their backyard.” The collaboration supports Bobcat’s introduction of its new autonomous, zero-turn mower, which offers game-changing efficiency and productivity by completing repetitive mowing tasks without the need for an onboard operator, according to the manufacturer. Designed to operate with software developed by Greenzie, the Bobcat autonomous mower has a ride-and-repeat feature, where operators can 66

plot a course and mark areas for the mower to avoid during autonomous operations. Able to detect objects, known or unknown, the zero-turn mower travels its prescribed path while the operator can take on other tasks and maximize their jobsite efficiency. The machine utilizes mapping to execute an exact route that can be repeated; all of which can be managed or edited on a simple smartphone app. Through this investment, Bobcat and Greenzie will join forces to accelerate Bobcat’s development of the autonomous capabilities and solutions across its product line-up. “We are thrilled to close our largest investment round to date with a strategic investment by an industry leader like Bobcat,” said Charles Brian Quinn (CBQ), co-founder and CEO of Greenzie. “Our customers are desperate for solutions that help them overcome their biggest challenge: labor shortages. Our software helps crews be more productive, and will run on reliable, rugged Bobcat equipment they trust.” The mower will have a limited launch in late 2023 with more details forthcoming.
