In what’s being described as a unique project for the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), construction is moving ahead on a roughly 11-mi. (17.7 km) section of Interstate 59 in Etowah County. The project involves an unbonded concrete overlay including bridge raising and widening on I-59 from south of the Attalla north city limit to the bridge over County Road 276 (Stephen Gap Road) at The asphalt layer serves as a bond breaker between the old pavement and the Duck Springs. It’s been said that utility work is sometimes dull but such is not the case with an ongoing South Carolina project where safety concerns include keeping an eye open for rattlesnakes. Sanders Utility Construction Company Inc., Charlotte, N.C., is working in a remote rural area of upstate South Carolina to install a cross-country waterline bringing fresh water to Greenville, S.C., from a reservoir in the foothills near Travelers Rest. “This is a pipe replacement project for the current two 30-inch raw water transmission mains from Table Rock Reservoir,” said Mike Sharpless, manager of capital programs, Greenville Water System (GWS). “Main No. 1 was con-
structed in 1930 and Main No. 2 was constructed in 1939. One 42-inch pipe has the same capacity as two 30-inch pipes.” The waterline, officially known as the Table Rock Raw Water Transmission Main Contract 102, involves laying about 8 mi. (12.8 km), which is approximately 42,000 linear ft. (12,801 m), of 42-in. (106 cm) DIP raw water transmission line for the GWS from Table Rock Reservoir to a pumping station on SR 288. Sanders is the prime general contractor for the $10 million job, which GWS is funding by means of water rates and revenue bonds. Sanders is installing the pipes and valves on this project, as well as handling excavation, backfill and blasting and excavation of rock under the direction of Project Engineer Jordan Adams and Project Superintendent Steve Sanders. see WATERLINE page 29
winter has not helped, since warmer temperatures are needed to pour surfaces,” said ALDOT spokesperson Rebecca White. “We’ve also seen a significant amount of rain which causes runoff, and delays work schedules.” According to ALDOT First Division Engineer Johnny Harris, “Trying to coordinate a project like this is always a concern, what with the different types of work involved in doing the concrete paving. The wet weather over the last several months hasn’t helped either, and the hot summer months that lie ahead could also prove difficult. Plus, you always expect problems when you close down two lanes of a major four-lane interstate and compress into one. Harris stressed that the work is a priority, “This definitely needed to be done see ALDOT page 18

Topcon, Roper Laser Hold Technology Road Show in Tenn.
(L-R): Mike Woodley, Topcon southeast regional manager, demonstrates a robotic total station with an FC 2500 data collector using the latest version of TopSURV 8.1 software to Nick Burchett, Ralph King, Mickey Lawson of Jigsaw Enterprises, Pikeville, Ky.
Walt Liles (L) of Roper Laser demonstrates the newest Topcon QS using reflectorless mode, which also serves as a full robotic total station, to Eddy Wray of Branch Highways, a road and site work contractor based in Roanoke, Va.
machine control technology. One of the newest products at the demonstration was Topcon QS using reflectorless mode, which also is a full robotic total station and can bounce between the two different options in the hardware platform. Another product that garnered a lot of attention, which had just been released by Topcon prior to the event, TopSURV 8.1 software was fully integrated and demonstrated. By all observations, the Topcon 3D-MC2 high-speed dozer system was the “star of the show.” This machine control system uses an inertial sensor on the blade that updates the machine 100 times per second in every direction the machine is moving, which is twice as fast as a typical GPS system, according to the manufacturer. “Third gear full throttle high speed grading comes out as smooth as a motorgrader without blade ‘chatter,’” said Roper Laser’s Vice President, Billy Price. After operating a Deere 700J with the Topcon 3D-MC2 system, Larry Van Dyke of English Construction Company, Lynchburg, Va., said, “I like it. We’re just getting into this
technology and this could be the product to make us more competitive.” After seeing and testing the latest Topcon machine control technology, Chris Franklin of SCF & Son Construction, Maryville, Tenn., said “we have the new Topcon surveying equipment, and are now looking into machine control systems. I could see this to be very productive and could possibly cut some of our time in half, while taking out a lot of the guesswork.” The demonstration excavator incorporated the Topcon 3DXi GPS excavator system while the motorgrader was equipped with Topcon’s 3DMC system with millimeter operation. During and after testing the machine control, guests were treated to a barbeque lunch. For those who were unable to attend, Roper Laser representatives recommended Topcon University online, which provides on line training sessions include video sessions and live training classes for both customers and prospects. For more information, visit www.roperlaser.com.
Adam Payne (R), Roper Laser, Knoxville, Tenn., shows the 3D excavator system to (L-R) Chris opcon and its Georgia/east Tennessee Franklin, Monroe Landell and Jeff Orr distributor, Roper Laser, hosted (in cab) of SCF & Son Construction, approximately 90 contractors at the Maryville, Tenn.

Topcon Technology Road Show in Knoxville, Tenn., on April 29. Representatives from Topcon and a large contingency from Roper Laser of Knoxville and Marietta, Ga., were on hand to provide a complete learning experience on all of the latest Topcon products. Attendees from five states, including Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky, turned out for the event. The location for the event was a 5-acre site in Knoxville, which is a property that will eventually become the site of Mega Machinery’s West Knoxville sales and service facility. Mega Machinery also provided the use of some of its machines for the demonstration event. The site was pre-set with all of the newest technology and machine control available from Topcon, starting with a GPS base system run by Topcon. Contractors took advantage of the opportunity to run a dozer, motorgrader and an excavator with Topcon GPS
Attendees took the opportunity to test the enhanced grading precision of a Cat 12H motorgrader utilizing the Topcon Millimeter GPS system.
Billy Price, vice president of Roper Laser, Knoxville, Tenn., shows the crowd just how fast he can grade while keeping a smooth cut using the Topcon 3DMC2 on a Deere 700J dozer running in top gear “wide open.”
(L-R): Larry Van Dyke of English Construction Company, Lynchburg, Va., gets a complete demonstration of the components of a Topcon 3D-MC2 high speed dozer system from John Gaines of Roper Laser, Marietta, Ga., and Pete Shearer of James River Laser & Equipment, Salem, Va.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) The federal government will spend $150,000 this year to continue a study on deepening Charleston Harbor, Sen. Lindsey Graham and U.S. Reps. Jim Clyburn and Tim Scott said during a news conference May 17. The funding will move the Charleston project forward for the rest of this year and comes with a cost-sharing agreement between the State Ports Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Officials want to deepen Charleston Harbor to 50 ft. (15 m) so the port can handle larger ships that will be carrying cargo after the Panama Canal is widened. While the three said the May 17 announcement is cause to celebrate, next year’s funding for the project is uncertain. The Army Corps has estimated that it will take about $1.2 million in federal money to complete work on the Charleston port in fiscal year 2012, which starts Oct. 1. “We’ve already begun working on funding for next year,” Graham said. “I know it will be a challenge as it was not included in the president’s budget.” Completing the study phase of harbor deepening will take about three to five years and the $12 million to $20 million cost will be split evenly by the Army Corps and the State Ports Authority. From there, costs increase rapidly and the total including construction is estimated at $300 million. This year’s funding was tied up in part by a fight over earmarks. In the past, the project could have been easily moved forward with a single lawmaker securing the funding. But the new crop of tea party-supported Republicans helped push through a ban on earmarks when the GOP took over the House this year. “I hope, though, having gone through this exercise, that the American people will know that every request by a congressman or senator for funding is not pork,” Clyburn said. “To dismiss these requests as simply being pork barrel projects, I think, cheapens the work of the port and what it means to the economy of South Carolina. And the same is true for ports all over this country.” Charleston already is seeing some of the larger ships that need more than the port’s 45-foot low-tide clearance, even though the widening of the Panama Canal to handle those ships is not expected to be finished until 2014. The port can handle those ships now as long as they come in at high tide.

Dynapac Holds Training Sessions for Flint Equipment
I
t was an extremely busy week for Flint Equipment Company’s sales and service staff as Dynapac dedicated one full week to its authorized distributor for training programs. Beginning on May 16, Flint’s sales personnel from south and central Georgia, Alabama and Florida met at the company’s headquarters facility in Albany, Ga., for a full day training school on the Dynapac pavers, milling and compaction machines. The following day, the service personnel from the same areas were brought in for a full day of service training on the Dynapac pavers. On May 18 the Dynapac F1000W paver was trucked to Atlanta and the staff of Dynapac made their way to Flint’s Atlanta, Ga., branch to set up for training sessions, while on the morning of May 19 sales personnel from north Georgia and South Carolina converged on the Flint-Atlanta branch for the same sales training program conducted in Albany. May 20 was the final training session in Atlanta and included a large contingent of service staffers from the north Georgia and South Carolina branch locations. A total of approximately 70 Flint Equipment Company sales and service staff members gained advanced training from Dynapac corporate representatives. The main demo models used for the training sessions included the Dynapac F1000W wheeled paver and the Dynapac CC524HF vibratory asphalt compactor. According to Dynapac Regional Manager Ricardo Perez, “the total number of Flint representatives that attended was great. The overall objective was to provide training for the sales and service departments to promote and demonstrate to their customers the combination package of the paver with the double drum asphalt roller behind it. This was the first exposure for an in depth training program for the F1000W paver for the Flint Equipment staff. We’re excited because we know that Flint is going to do a great job for us in selling and servicing these pavers in a very large geographical service area.”
After classroom sessions, some of the Flint Equipment Company sales staff assembled for a photo in Albany, Ga., on a Dynapac F1000W wheeled paver.
Service staffers in attendance at the Atlanta, Ga., training program got a comprehensive walk around of the Dynapac FW1000W paver.
During the paver walk around, Rodney Beavers, service manager of Flint Equipment Company’s Atlanta, Ga., branch carefully studies the control panel at the operator’s console on the Dynapac F1000W.
It was a packed conference room of Flint service staffers at the Atlanta branch service training program.
During a paver walk around in Albany, Ga., Dynapac’s Ricardo Perez points out several features on the Dynapac F1000W paver, including the outboard auger system and the paver’s new camlock screed.
Dynapac’s service manger, Nono Bauleth, quickly started the classroom training with an in depth presentation of the hydraulic, pump and propulsion systems on the Dynapac FW1000W pavers.

Project on Schedule Despite Weather-Related Delays ALDOT from page 1
now. It’s one of our major routes through the state. The 1960’s construction has outlived its design life and needs rehab work to make it safer for the motoring public. “This is the first unbonded concrete overlay project in Alabama we’ve ever undertaken,” Harris continued. “It’s basically a new roadway on top of an old roadway. Each concrete layer operates independently.” Work isn’t expected to be completed for more than a year. Scott Adams, Concrete Division Manager of Kentucky-based general contractor Hinkle Contracting Company LLC, said, “As the prime contractor, we are self- performing all the concrete paving. Our work here started June 2010 and we are currently scheduled to finish in October 2012.” As far as the biggest challenges associated with the project, Adams explained that, “The pavement rideability specification is one of the toughest in the country. And overlaying an existing roadway with new cross slopes and new profile is tough. We are running an average of 10-hour day shifts about six days per week. We work seven days, at times, if we were weathered out early in the week. Traffic is currently running on the southbound side while we reconstruct the northbound side.” Asphalt paving overlay mix and concrete paving finish surface mixes are being used as part of the process, according to Adams. “The asphalt layer serves as a bond breaker between the old pavement and the new concrete pavement. Gomaco concrete pavers and placers are being utilized to place the concrete pavement,” he explained. Subcontractor Good Hope Contracting Co. Inc. of Cullman, Ala., is placing the asphalt bond breaker, while RaCON Inc. of Tuscaloosa, Ala., is performing the grade work. Good Hope Senior VicePresident John Brown said placing the bond breaker involves precise measurements.“The thickness is from one and a half inches up to 12 inches in the super elevations. This plant mix material is polymer modified and is to correct cross slope and provide the correct grade
accidents in the project work zone will shut down both lanes until the traffic accidents are cleared. During all phases, drivers are urged to comply with posted speed limits and allow safe following distances to reduce the potential for accidents.” In what’s certain to cause traffic headaches, planned ramp closures at Exit 188 during certain phases will impact the public’s ability to enter and exit I-59. As in all roadway construction projects, the public should anticipate delays especially during high congestion times during the day. The thousands of drivers who travel the area each day are being encouraged to adjust
Construction is moving ahead on an 11-mi. (17.7km) section of Interstate 59 in Etowah County. The project involves an unbonded concrete overlay on I-59 from south of the Attalla north city limit to the bridge over County Road 276 (Stephen Gap Road) at Duck Springs.
for the concrete to be placed. Our tolerances are from zero inch high to one quarter inch low. We used a Pave Smart grade- control system to obtain these results with a minimum of milling to correct high spots.” Brown explained, “We also paved the crossovers and required widening. We started paving in July 2010 and have essentially completed our work on the northbound lanes. Once Hinkle has completed the concrete paving on the northbound side, we will repeat the process on the southbound lane.” Good Hope crews are using a Roadtec RP 190 paver, a SB2500 Roadtec Shuttlebuggy and Cat 564D rollers with Superior brooms. They have already placed in excess of 50,000 tons (45,359 t) on the polymer modified leveling course on the northbound roadway and anticipate approximately this much on the southbound roadway. “Our biggest challenge is the stringent tolerances on the leveling course,” added Brown, “but so far we have exceeded expectations
using the Pave Smart grade-control system.” RaCON has been on the job since August 2009. Project Manager Richard Brown said crews are responsible for all earthwork activities on the project. “This includes the notching of the shoulders to widen the roadbed, then placement of borrow material to complete slopes and shoulders. Once the entire pavement has been placed, then we will go back and pull up the shoulders,” Richard Brown explained. Equipment for the tasks includes a Caterpillar D6R, Caterpillar D6N, Komatsu 400 excavator, Caterpillar 140H and an Ingersoll Rand SD100. An estimated 120,000 cu. yds. (91,746 cu m) of borrow material will be used. Richard Brown said the most difficult part of the task at hand has been the establishment of the grades and profile, which forced a delay in the project. “It’s also worth noting that this stretch of the interstate has had a life existence of over 40 years. This was the first ARRA job let in

Alabama. It entailed excavation, asphalt paving, concrete paving, clearing and grubbing and bridge raising and widening,” he stated. Transportation officials say the public impact of the I-59 project includes lane closures, the narrowing of lanes, two-lane traffic, an exit closing, wide load detours and alternate routes. Motorists may also notice an increased law enforcement presence. According to White, “There are seven phases in the project. We are near completion of Phase II now and into III which should be completed this summer. Motorists will experience two-lane traffic with no passing as the northbound and southbound lanes, respectively, are closed for construction during the project. During certain phases, any

Goodyear, Honda and various manufacturers are all located in the work vicinity. “The I-59 project in Etowah County, after experiencing both design and weather related delays, is moving forward,” explained Transportation Director John Cooper. “Work will progress at a meaningful pace to reach the new projected completion date in late 2012.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Mack Introduces Enhancements to Vocational Truck Lineup Mack Trucks Inc. has introduced a series of enhancements to its MackGranite conventional straight trucks and the heavy-haul Titan by Mack model. The Granite medium-heavy duty (MHD) is designed to meet the needs of customers, like some municipalities, who don’t put their trucks through all the rigors Granite models can handle — customers for whom a lighter spec gets the job done. “In the current economic environment, companies are taking an even harder look at how much truck they truly need,” said Curtis Dorwart, Mack vocational products marketing manager. “Our new Granite mediumheavy duty delivers just the right amount of Mack’s legendary strength, durability and reliability, along with valuable weight and cost savings.” The Granite MHD is available in both axle-forward and axle-back configurations, is powered by a Cummins ISL9 EPA 2010certified engine and is offered with an Eaton manual or Allison automatic transmission. Both Mack’s Granite axle- forward and Granite axle- back models can now be ordered with a 36-in. flat-top sleeper equipped with a 30 by 80-in. mattress, curtain, bunk restraint, under bunk storage and cup holder — as well as rear and side window options. “We’ve seen a considerable increase in the number of vocational customers expanding their operations beyond regional sites,” Dorwart said. “The new Mack Granite sleeper is ideal for customers in any market working to meet the federal hours-of-service requirements.” Further enhancements to the Mack Granite series include a new headliner console, optional one-piece windshield, and updated Champion Level trim package with button-tuck vinyl and ultraleather seats that delivers the comfort and styling drivers desire at no extra charge over its predecessor. The new Champion Level trim package and one-piece windshield also are available in the Titan by Mack model. A cab-mounted exhaust option available in all Granite models and a clear back-of-cab assist Mack body builder partners. Customers also now have a new Allison

automatic transmission option — the 3000 series — for the Granite model. “In recent years, the trucking industry has been hit hard by the worst recession since the Great Depression, but Mack never stopped investing and innovating — it’s what our customers expect,” said Kevin Flaherty, Mack senior vice president, United States and Canada. RX Hydraulic Breaker Attachment Fits Full Range of Sizes The Chicago Pneumatic RX Hydraulic Breaker line offers 13 models which are designed to match various application needs found in demolition, primary/secondary breaking, ditching, recycling, road construction and landscaping. The breakers fit carrier classes ranging from 200 ft./lb. to the 10,000 ft./lb. class. RX hydraulic breakers feature a hybrid gas/oil technology and are engineered with fewer components and working parts to maintain. The CP power boost feature on the RX models is designed to achieve higher breaking performance in tougher applications without requiring additional hydraulic input. While the impact energy remains constant, the breaker increases blow frequency, which is said to result in enhanced percussive performance. The power stop function found on models RX14 and up reduces blank firing, and is designed to protect the breaker and carrier while increasing the working life of the components. The larger models in the Chicago Pneumatic RX line, RX25 through RX53, feature a power control valve, which enables the operator to adjust the breaker’s performance according to the application. The RX25-RX53 models also feature a fastening system that uses head bolts and insert threads to distribute torque equally. The RX line has been designed to provide increased noise and vibration damping. The hydraulic breakers also feature a new style of internal control valve, which has proved to be more efficient than other designs. For more information, visit www.cp.com.

Pro-Tech New Sno Blade Attachments Feature Adjustable Wings, Versatility Pro-Tech has new Sno Blade attachments for winter maintenance. Featuring independently adjustable wings, the products add extra versatility to the company’s existing line of Sno Pusher containment plows. Sno Blades come with a universal coupler for attaching to skid steers, and they have a rear mount option for compact tractors. The AB07S includes a 7.5-ft. (2.3 m) wide moldboard, and the AB09S comes with a 9 ft. (2.7 m) wide moldboard. Both models come standard with 1-ft. (.3 m) wide, multi-posi-
tional wings, which can be manually adjusted to nine different positions according to the operator’s needs. This design allows Sno Blades to act as pushers, straight blades or variations in-between. Furthermore, the moldboard can be hydraulically angled 30 degrees left or right. To avoid damage to the equipment and property, the Sno Blade features a bolt-on, reversible steel edge with four trip springs. It also incorporates a floating design for adjusting to ground contours, creating optimal down pressure and pro-
viding enhanced scraping performance, according to the manufacturer. Other standard features include a deflector kit, curb guards, hydraulic hoses and adjustable-depth shoes. In addition to the Sno Blade Pro-Tech also offers its Sno Blower and Sno Broom attachments, as well as a full line of Sno Pusher containment plows. WATERLINE from page 1
The engineering firm on the project is Arcadis US Inc., Charleston, S.C. The project not only involves laying waterline across difficult terrain, but also reportedly necessitates staying alert for wild hogs as well as rattlesnakes. In addition, cell phone reception at the job site is limited and spotty, leading to occasional difficulties in communication. Then there is the matter of getting equipment to the workers. “Although the job is somewhat remote, access to the main portion of the job is not as hard as you might think,” said Frederick M. Young Jr., vice president of Sanders Utility Construction. “The equipment was brought to the job site from Charlotte via I-85, I-26 and Highway 11 with normal oversize/overweight permits from the appropriate authorities. “This did not present any abnormal technical challenges,” he went on. “However, once on the job some of the right-of-ways are particularly difficult to access and get into, especially with pipe and materials like stone, etc. All of our crew vehicles are four-wheel drive and some use of ATV’s is being made to access the longer right-ofways to bring lightweight tools in and limit the number of trips in and out that the crew vehicles make per day.” With a work force varying between 15 and 20 on site, approximately 95 percent of the water line has been constructed. Work on the project began in January 2010, and despite a slight delay caused by the weather the project is on schedule for its estimated completion date of July 2011. As of April 2011 almost 7.5 mi. (12 km) of pipe were in the ground; three river crossings had been completed; and several roads had been crossed and repaved. Excavators on the job are exclusively from Komatsu, and include PC750LC-7, PC400LC-8, PC308USLC-3, PC300LC-6 wide track, and PC220LC-7 models, as well as a PC200LC-8 with John Henry Drill attached. 921 loaders are also represented on site. The equipment was provided by the Charlotte, N.C., branch of Linder Industrial Machinery Company. Sanders is a long-time customer of the company, having purchased excavators, wheel loaders and crawler dozers from Linder for a number of years. “Sanders Utility Construction has been a very loyal customer of Linder Industrial Machinery, formerly Mitchell Distributing Co., for almost 50 years,” said Linder salesman Bill Cross. “They found a niche market in difficult waterline and sewer line construction years ago. Steve Sanders once joked with me, ‘The harder and more difficult the job conditions are, the more we like it.’ Their innovative management team allows them to develop creative construction methods unique to each job. This has helped them to build a reputation of being one of the most professional and wellqualified utility construction companies in the Carolinas by consistently completing their jobs efficiently and on schedule, despite demanding conditions. This is the legacy left to them by their founder, Dewey Sanders who passed away five years ago, that they steadfastly protect and maintain. Over the years they have used many different types of equipment but one lesson they have proven again and again is that Komatsu

excavators continue to be one of the most reliable and cost-efficient machines available in today’s market.” One of the problems to be overcome for this project was dealing with three major river or creek crossings along the route of the water line. “We resolved these difficulties through the use of major pump bypasses and Dammit Dams, inflatable water-filled cofferdams. They turned out to be the perfect solution for our river crossings, giving us good flexibility for some tough conditions,” Young said, adding “The Komatsu excavators work hard for us day in and day out, taking the equipment worries away on a day-to-day basis.” Sanders has engaged only a handful of subcontractors for this project. The companies involved are Foster Clearing & Chipping Company of Gastonia, N.C.,

Rockster’s R1100 Crushes Up to 350 Tons Per Hour The Rockster R1100 impact crusher is 32 tons (29 t) total weight and crushes up to 350 tons (317.5 t) per hour. With this machine Rockster has entered a new performancedimension within the compact crushing class. “Our existing series of mobile crushers, with the 25-tons plant R900 as biggest machine has already proved itself and consolidated its position on the international market,” said Rockster CEO Wolfgang Kormann. “However, additionally we got more and more requests from our distribution partners concerning a bigger machine, covering a wider market segment. The target: a crusher that still features compact transport dimensions, but at the same time boasts a performance level of more than 300 tons per hour, adequate for covering major transactions.” The result is a machine which fits into the existing product line and features a variety of technical highlights: as well as the R900 and R800, the R1100 is equipped with a fully hydraulically drive system. Furthermore, the R1100 features a 2-step and 6 ft. (1.8 m) long pre-screener. This ensures not only a maximum pre-screening quality, but also a further increase of the throughput rate, a reduction of the wear costs as well as a perfect separation of final material and earthy substance, according to the manufacturer. Two in One: Rockster Duplex Exchange System The two bigger models R900/R1100 (impact crusher) and R800/R1200 (jaw crusher) are constructed in a completely identical design, in order to realize the creation of a crusher exchange system — the Rockster duplex system. Both crushing units are interchangeable and can be

installed on the same machine through the identical drive system. Within only fours hours the impact crusher can be transformed into a jaw crusher — and vice versa.

The headquarters of Rockster in Austria opened in 2009. Wolfgang Kormann, CEO and founder of Rockster Recycler.
The R1100 together with screening box and return belt are easy to transport without dismantling the optional equipment.
Produce Defined Final Grain in Only One Step With the available optional products, the Rockster crushers can be transformed into a crushing and screening combination producing a 100 percent defined final product with just one machine. Adding the 1-deck screening box RS83/94 and the return belt RB75/85 for bringing back the oversize material into the crushing process, is very easy and can be done in shortest time, according to the manufacturer. These options don’t require any separate drive system as they are driven by the additional hydraulic unit of the crushing plants. The whole combination can be left on the crusher for transport. Flexco Introduces Stainless Steel Belt Conveyor Cleaners Four of Flexco’s belt conveyor cleaners are now being offered in stainless steel. The Mineline MSP standard-duty precleaner, Mineline MMP medium-duty precleaner, Mineline MHS heavy-duty secondary cleaner, and Eliminator U-Type secondary cleaner are all available in stainless steel. “We developed these cleaners based on increasing demand from markets requiring stainless steel cleaner options,” said Ryan Grevenstuk, BCP product manager of Flexco. “We aren’t simply focusing on certain components of the cleaners. These are full stainless steel products that can handle even the most demanding, abusive beltlines.” The Flexco line of stainless steel cleaners can be used in any application, but are ideal for use in aggregate operations, copper mines, fertilizer plants, power plants, salt plants, sugar plants, ports and other corrosive environments. Most of the cleaner sizes require a one-day lead time. For more information, call 800/541-8028 or visit www.flexco.com.

Presents Paving Workshop for Contractors Kelly Tractor Co., a provider of building construction and industrial equipment throughout Florida, recently held a workshop on “Paving and Troubleshooting Techniques” at its corporate headquarters in Miami. Paving contractors from all across South Florida attended this one day classroom session and hands on experience training presented by Kelly Crushing and Paving Specialist Mike Wohlert. The “Paving by the Numbers” session took attendees through the steps recommended by Cat when using the Cat AP1000D paver. Cat’s Paving Territory Manager Jerry Salemi was on hand to answer questions. Later, Roger Croft
of TopCon global positioning systems presented the proper use of the TopCon sensors that are attached to the paver to ensure a smooth flow of asphalt as it is applied to the paving surface. In the afternoon, customers previewed the Mauldin paving compact products offered by Calder Brothers, such as the Mauldin M413XT maintainer, the MT-300 tack truck sprayer and 1750-C compact paver. Kelly Tractor Co. distributes Mauldin paving products for the South Florida area. JCB Unveils 512-56 Loadall Telescopic Handler — Its Largest, Strongest Model JCB has introduced its largest and strongest telescopic handler to date — the 512-56. According to John Patterson, deputy chairman of JCB, the 512-56 is the largest machine in the company’s range of telescopic handlers and meets a growing trend towards larger machines. “The 512-56 caps off our line of five high-boom, lift-andplace Loadalls with capacities ranging from 6,000 to 12,000 pounds,” Patterson said. “With this new high-capacity, highlifting machine, we’re entering an important, growing sector of the market.” The 512-56 telescopic handlers can elevate a maximum load of 12,000 lbs. (5,443 kg) with a maximum lift height of 56 ft. (17 m). The machine is equipped with axle-mounted stabilizers as standard for chassis leveling when the stabilizer legs are down, enabling it to lift massive loads without sacrificing safety. Its combination of power and lifting height make it ideal for lifting and placing heavy items at construction and industrial sites, according to the manufacturer. Versatile High-Boom Design The 512-56’s boom is positioned high for optimum operator visibility when working or traveling. A hydraulic cylinder mounted underneath the outer boom extends the boom’s intermediate section, with chains for second and third stages. This “top-hat” boom design uses a Waxoyl lubricant exclusive to JCB. Because the Waxoyl lubricant is dry to the touch, it does not attract sand or dirt that could potentially increase boom pad wear. The boom’s quick-hitch enables operators to use a wide variety of attachments on the 512-56, further enhancing its versatility and productivity. Side-Mounted JCB Tier III Dieselmax Engine With a side-mounted, 114 hp (85 kW) version of JCB’s EPA and CARB-compliant Tier III Dieselmax Engine, the 512-56 has power to spare. The engine’s high level of torque delivers enhanced tractive effort in soft ground conditions. A standard four-speed JCB powershift trans-

mission provides effortless gear changes while the machine is on the move. Mounted at a 90-degree angle to the machine’s frame, the engine is easily accessible for servicing and maintenance. Also featured on JCB’s low-boom telescopic handlers, this side-mounted engine creates a high level of parts commonality that allows dealers and operators of multiple-machine fleets to maintain fewer parts in inventory. Heavy-Duty JCB Axles The 512-56 features JCB axles with torque-proportioning differentials as standard equipment. Heavy-axle shafts and outboard planetary hubs offer long service life and reduce repair and maintenance costs over the life of the machine. Service brakes are self-adjusting oil-immersed discs that require no maintenance. Comfort and Safety Operators can comfortably and safely enter and exit the 512-56’s lower-mounted, spacious cab. Inside the ergonomically-designed cab, a large right-hand cluster provides at-aglance reading of the machine’s instrument display. The cab’s easy-to-operate plus-pattern servo hydraulic control lever features proportional and flow-share capability for precise control with fast cycle times. Outside the cab, operators can choose from several tire options — air-filled, eco ballast, puncture sealant and foamfilled. In this way, operators can ensure that the 512-56’s tires will meet the demands of the terrain present at their individual job sites. For more information, call 912/447-2000 or visit www.jcbna.com.

Alex Lyon & Son Holds Spring Auction in Orlando, Fla.
Kevin and Alecia Waters of Waters Equipment, Atlanta, Ga., were taking a look at a variety of equipment, including this IHI mini-excavator.
A
wonderful spring day greeted the crowd of bidders who attended the Alex Lyon & Son auction May 17 in Orlando, Fla. Prices remained strong as bidders came from as far away as Canada and South America, hoping to take equipment home with them. see LYON page 61
This 2004 JLG shooting boom forklift went for $32,500. It has a 10,000-lb. capacity and a 55-ft. reach.
Tom Colletti came up from Sebastian, Fla., looking for a backhoe loader for his operation. This Case might be just the machine. David Cruz (L), Llerena Tire & Equipment, Miami, Fla., and Eddie Warnken of E. J. Equipment were helping each other look over this Caterpillar 710A grader.
New Brunswick, Canada, is a long way to come for equipment, but Jack Surette, Eagle Tractor, told us that the exchange rate is still favorable, so he may be taking some equipment home. He really is enjoying the change in weather.
Christopher (L) and Terry McCorkle were in town from Claxton, Ga., looking for equipment. This Caterpillar 710A grader caught their eye.
This Komatsu PC 300LC may be going to Ecuador if Jose Maldonado has the right bid.
