Coble Trench Founder Dies in Plane Crash Tom Coble, founder and president of Greensboro, N.C.-based Coble Trench Safety (CTS), died in a plane crash Jan. 20, 2012, shortly after takeoff from a regional airport in Rainbow City, Ala. Traveling alone, Mr. Coble was flying his L-39 Albatross fighter jet back to Burlington, N.C. His plane, a Czechoslovakian experimental class aircraft, had undergone routine service and maintenance in Gadsen, Ala. Less than a minute after takeoff, the plane caught fire and came down in a wooded, marshy area approximately 2 mi. from the airport. Authorities are Tom Coble investigating the accident; the cause has not yet been determined. Mr. Coble was 58 years old. With more than 42 years of flying experience, he was a well-experienced pilot who owned multiple planes and was happiest when in the cockpit. He often joked with friends and family that he stayed in business to support his flying habit. In 2002, he founded Coble Trench Safety, a regional firm specializing in the rental and sales of trench and traffic safety equipment, as well as OSHA-compliant training classes. CTS has 11 branches from Baltimore, Md., to Knoxville, Tenn., to Atlanta, Ga. Prior to founding CTS, Mr. Coble established and grew Coble Cranes & Equipment/Coble Rents, a Greensboro, N.C.-based firm he sold in 1999 to a publicly traded company.
A variety of equipment has been used on the Muddy Creek project, including both a Link-Belt and a Kobelco crane to lift and place sections of the bridges.

The more than two-year effort to replace the old bridges that carry U.S. Highway 421 traffic over Muddy Creek in Winston-Salem should be finished in late May, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Begun in January 2010, the Muddy Creek bridge project was designed to replace two older spans that had been carrying up to 51,000 cars per day for decades. The crossing is located on the western edge of see BRIDGE page 48

Caterpillar Forms Alliance With Exodus Machines Caterpillar recently executed an alliance agreement with Exodus Machines Incorporated for the design and supply of material handlers to be sold and supported exclusively by Cat dealers. These Exodus machines will be available immediately in North America and will complement Caterpillar’s current line of wheel and track material handlers greater than 27.5 tons (25 t). These products will initially continue to carry the Exodus brand name but will transition to the Cat brand in 2013. The alliance agreement follows Caterpillar’s recent formation of a new strategic business unit, the Caterpillar Industrial & Waste Group, which has global responsibility for serving customers in these markets. The new group is part of the diversified products division, led by Bill Springer, vice president of Caterpillar. “We are pleased to be working with Exodus to meet customers’ material handler needs,” Springer said. “Bringing together Exodus’ intense focus on material handlers and their innovative designs with our unmatched distribution and product support capabilities, the alliance creates a force that will serve
customers well.” Exodus Machines, based in Superior, Wis., was incorporated only three years ago and is now known for its innovative designs. Each of the company’s material handlers features an industry exclusive cab that lowers to the ground for easy ingress and egress and maintenance access. The wheel machines also feature independent planetary wheel drive for true all-wheel-drive. “It’s rewarding for our entire team to have Caterpillar acknowledge the value that the machines we developed bring to customers,” said Bruce Bacon, founder of Exodus and now president of the company. “And it’s exciting that our company will continue growing to serve an industry that we are passionate about.” In support of the alliance agreement, Caterpillar acquired a minority equity interest in a new entity, Exodus Machines LLC, formed by Exodus. In addition, Exodus plans to expand manufacturing in the Superior area and is working to secure working capital and capital funding, developing plant layouts, assessing building sites and estimating needs for new employees.

“We’re tremendously excited to see last year’s success continue into the New Year,” said Michael Crouch, vice president of business development of Volvo Rents, noting the company’s surge of nearly 50 pick-ups since the beginning of 2011. “As the American economy, and particularly the construction equipment rental industry, continues to make a significant shift from buying to renting, we find ourselves in great position for continued growth.” In addition to Volvo Rents’ expanding line of Volvo compact equipment — such as backhoe and skid steer loaders, compact wheel loaders, compact excavators and compaction equipment — the rental centers carry a comprehensive line of essential equipment and tools for the construction, commercial, industrial and homeowner markets. The focus is on daily, weekly and monthly rentals. “Volvo Rents’ strong national presence and brand recognition made our decision to become part of the company’s network of stores an easy one,” said Robert Griffin, a 26year veteran of the construction equipment rental industry who founded Blue Eagle Equipment in 2004. “Joining the Volvo Rents culture of customer care and commitment to local decision-making offers great opportunities for our team members.” Griffin will remain active with the operations/management of all three locations as general manager. All 19 of his employees also will stay on to run the stores. While store hours will be Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the company offers 24-hour service, every day of the week. Yale Lift Trucks of Florida & Georgia Rebrands Itself
CALL DOUG OR SAM (866) 485-7180 WWW.RBUSED.COM
Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia, a 30-year veteran forklift dealer will be rebranded MacKinnon Equipment & Services effective April 1, 2012. The new name does not signal any change in the company’s product line coverage, policies or ownership, which remains family-owned and independent. Company Founder and CEO A.D. “Sandy” MacKinnon purchased the Tampa dealership formerly known as Yale Gulf Atlantic in 1982 and maintained the Yale name as part of the brand after the acquisition. MacKinnon has devoted his career to promoting the Yale brand from his positions as salesperson and national sales manager of Yale Material Handling to owning the Yale forklift dealership. Over the years, the dealership added various product lines including Capacity yard spotters, Princeton piggybacks, Factory Cat sweepers and scrubbers, Taylor Dunn personnel carriers and most recently JCB Construction Equipment. With the company’s continued growth, the Yale name no longer fits the dealership,
Mackinnon said. MacKinnon believes that the dealership has a much stronger future as an equipment solutions provider as opposed to being known as a manufacturers’ representative. He pledged to continue to add product lines and services that will add value for customers. “While my name has been absent from the marquee, I have been a part of the daily operation of the dealership for 30 years. With the new name, I promise a renewed commitment to providing the highest level of service to our valued customers,” MacKinnon said. “I hope to keep MacKinnon Equipment and Services a family-owned business for generations to come.” Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia and JCB of Florida and South Georgia will begin notifying its suppliers and customers of the change immediately. Link-Belt HTC-3140s: Technology Only Where Its Needed Designed as simple, cost-effective heavylift truck cranes, the 140-ton (120 t) HTC3140 and HTC-3140 LB (long boom) deliver capacity and transportability as the largest truck cranes in North America. For 2012, they also deliver a host of new features and the latest emissions technology available. The new 3140s now have Cummins engines in both the upper and lower. The upper uses the Tier IVi/Stage IIIB QSB 6.7 engine with 215 hp (160 kW) and 685 ft.lbs. (929 Nm) of torque. The lower uses Cummins’ 2010 EPA emissions-compliant ISX15 with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR). It has 581 horsepower (434 kW) and 1850 footpounds (2,508 Nm) of torque. Mated to the new engine is an Eaton UltraShift PLUS transmission with 11 forward speeds, three reverse speeds and noclutch-pedal shifting. The transmission’s Hill Start Aid prevents roll-
total crane operating system. Link-Belt Pulse monitors multiple crane functions including real-time latching boom operation, counterweight removal and installation and has extensive diagnostic capabilities. LinkBelt Pulse also functions as a rated capacity limiter with indicators for maximum allowable load, load on hook, overload, crane geometry, wind speed and two block conditions. Also new to the 3140 are redesigned cabs with new gauges and revised control placement. The upper cab tilts up to 20 degrees keeping the operator comfortable at high boom angles. Gauge and control placement has been overhauled and includes a new outrigger operation with self-leveling. A durable, rubberized coating keeps the floor resistant to wear and easy to clean. A swingup roof window with
windshield wiper and washer, enginedependent warm water cab heating, a sun screen, cup holder and a five-way-adjustable seat with headrest ensure a comfortable work environment, according to the manufacturer. The lower cab is user friendly with office racks, a hat rack and an easy-to-read LCD display. On the carrier, the 3140s use the same outrigger controls and self-leveling system as the ATC-3275. The outriggers (and winches) comply with the latest OSHA mandates and include a light at each outrigger. Just as important as what these cranes have is what they don’t have. The 3140s gained no weight despite adding new emissions technology and many other features.
back or roll-forward when launching on grades. The crane also has a two-speed auxiliary transmission for precise job site travel. On the road, the 3140 can top 65 mph (104.6 kph). Further updating the HTC-3140/3140 LB is the in-house designed Link-Belt Pulse
Other features of the HTC-3140 and HTC-3140 LB: • Power and heated mirrors • Access ladders and folding upper guardrails • Low profile emission (SCR/DPF) compartment • The CALC (Confined Area Lifting Capacities) system • Chrome exhaust shield and piping • Large engine access • Supported 24/7 by Link-Belt Preferred including online manuals, literature, a ground bearing calculator, and 3D Lift Plan.

Transcube Transportable Fuel Tanks Are DOT Approved Transcube’s line of transportable fuel tanks are DOT approved for road transportation and UL 142 certified for safe diesel fuel storage. The double-walled tanks provide 110-percent secondary containment of the inner container’s total capacity to eliminate the risk of spills and contamination, making them ideal for equipment and power rental fleets, fuel suppliers and end users working in construction, mining, agricultural and offshore applications. Internally baffled to prevent the surge of fuel during transport, Transcube tanks have DOT approval for transportation of diesel fuel, unlike traditional fuel
tanks that are not designed for traveling on the road. This gives the units the versatility to be deployed to remote locations while full of fuel as well as the ability to be removed from a site with fuel still inside, according to the manufacturer. Models in the Transcube line include the 05TCG, 10TCG, 20TCG and 30TCG, offering capacities of 132, 264, 528 and 792 gal. (500, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 L), respectively. The tanks are designed with an inner fuel container and an outer wall that provides 110-percent integral secondary containment, in contrast to traditional tanks that require a sepa-
rate containment pan. To eliminate the risk of accidental spillage, the tanks have no bottom or side exterior outlets of any kind. All fill ports, pumps, fittings and connections are housed at the top of the tank within the secondary containment area. The tanks are capable of feeding up to three generators and refueling equipment at the same time. To prevent theft or tampering, access to fuel and pumping equipment is secured within the unit’s lockable cabinet. The tanks are equipped to make handling and maneuverability simple regardless of job site logistics. Forklift pockets are accessible on all four sides of the tank, while full
load lifting eyes on the top corners allow the tank to be lifted, raised or lowered by a crane while full of fuel. Additionally, the rectangular shape of the tanks gives them the ability to be stacked — as many as two high when full and three high when empty — thus reducing the required space for storage and making transportation more economical. Maintenance and inspection of the tanks is simple due to a removable inner tank, which allows a person to easily access and clean the inner chamber and compartments. Featuring rugged, all-steel construction and a galvanized
bumper strip around the upper perimeter for added protection, the tanks are backed by a 5-year warranty. Transcube offers several optional pumps and fittings, including electric and manual transfer pumps, engine-powered fuel pumps, aviation fuel systems, filters, supply and return hoses and connections, hose reels, and digital and mechanical flow meters. Tanks and fittings also can be supplied with custom colors to match a user’s existing fleet of equipment. For more information, call 203/847-4300 or visit www.transcube.net/us.

‘Stumpiranha’ Delivers Complete Stump Removal The “Stumpiranha” from Leading Edge Attachments Inc. is a stump removal tool that replaces the slow process of stump grinding, and allows for complete removal without leaving grindings or stump remains that can cause sinkholes later. Stump grinders are expensive, slow, and tap into the hydraulics of a machine, which can introduce contaminants in the excavator’s complex hydraulic system. The Stumpiranha attaches to an excavator or backhoe similar to a bucket, and allows the stump to be cut and ripped under the stump from the roots. The staggered sharp pointed blades cut the roots under the stump one pointed blade at a time, thus allowing the maximum cutting force to be achieved, according to the manufacturer. The vertical arms of the tool straddle the stump while the blades rip the roots below, thus allowing the stump to be removed completely, only leaving the ends of the roots. The stump can then be scooped up and loaded into a truck, without leaving insect infested grindings at the site. The Stumpiranha is manufactured in the United States using high strength T1 alloy steel for abusive, abrasive and cold weather conditions. The price for a 20 ton excavator model currently is $8,690. For more information, visit www.stumpiranha.com.

Breaker Technology (BTI) Debuts Hydraulic Breaker ‘Powerhouse’ The BXR150 at 15,000 ft.-lbs., is designed for rugged, continuous duty for use in demanding breaking applications. It offers an extra long stroke design, which improves the power-to-weight ratio of the breaker, providing a wide carrier range (120,000 to 220,000 lbs. [54,431 to 99,790 kg]) and power available. Precise tolerances between the piston and cylinder provide high efficiency, blow rate and power, according to the manufacturer. Large cross section upper and lower shock absorbing isolators reduce vibration feedback to the carrier. BTI’s front head restraint system tightly guides the front head within the housing, reducing loading to the
tie rods and the upper portion of the breaker. A narrow box housing design is well suited to tight trenching conditions. The BXR150 has a working weight of 12,000 lbs. (5,443 kg), which may vary depending on bracket. Tool diameter is 8 in. (20 cm), flow range is 85 to 120 gpm (321 to 454 L) and operating pressure is 2,030 to 2,755 psi. The frequency range is 260 to 425 bpm in long stroke mode (high impact), 340 to 530 in short stroke mode (high frequency) — manually controlled via hydraulic piloted stroke control. Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section IROCK Crushers Adds Track Screening Plants to Lineup IROCK Crushers, headquartered in Oakwood Village, Ohio, recently added Track Screening Plants to their lineup of material processing equipment. According to General Manager Bob Nelson, the decision to offer track screening plants was driven by the company’s interest in addressing customer needs and providing its growing dealer network greater access to marketplace demands. Nelson explained that since IROCK’s dealer network reported success in selling their crushing plants, it became apparent there was a need for quality track screening plants to complement its existing crusher product line. In response, IROCK came up with a line of track screening plants that offer customers the kind of equipment that IROCK has
become known for in the marketplace. IROCK’s new track screening plants were designed with an eye toward customer productivity and profit. The new track screening plants also meet IROCK’s fundamental strategy of sourcing name brand engines and components. According to Nelson, this approach helps expedite service and repairs by ensuring that replacement parts are readily available. Like its crushers, the track screening plants are manufactured with high quality components and are powered by CAT engines. Although IROCK has been marketing the track screening plants since the beginning of 2011, the company wanted to have production plants in place for a period to time before making a formal public announcement about the addition. According to
Nelson, IROCK now has a significant amount of track screening plants in the field and feedback from customers has been positive. IROCK’s track screening plants offer competitive advantages in pricing, durability, and production capacity. The company views its machines as having the versatility to be used in stand-alone screening applications or to be used in conjunction with IROCK’s crushing plants and other manufacturers as well. As with its crusher line, IROCK plans to carry a full inventory of replacement parts to ensure its ability to provide quick and reliable service to its customers. Parts ordering will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week with IROCK’s recently implemented online parts department. IROCK’s line of track screening plants
currently includes the IROCK TS-512 tracked screener, a durable machine designed for the recycling and aggregate contractor market. The IROCK TS-516 is a heavy duty, high capacity scalper capable of screening a wide variety of material in harsh conditions. The IROCK TS-522 was developed with medium to large scale operators in mind who require the ability to process large volumes of high grade products. IROCK’s newest addition, the TS-522TD track screening plant features a third deck to enable the production of four products. IROCK has been in business for 20 years with 2010 being its best year in a decade largely due to the company establishing and meetings its goal of building its dealer network. IROCK has plans to introduce additional equipment in the upcoming year.
Although IROCK has been marketing the track screening plants since the beginning of 2011, the company wanted to have production plants in place for a period to time before making a formal public announcement about the addition.

Powercrusher™ Crushers & Screeners from Atlas Copco
Rock Star
There are many reasons why the Powercrusher is a star. The 11 models of crushers and six models of screeners offer capacities ranging from 250 to 500 tons per hour. Other features include: t Jaw crushers that use Quattro Movement, a figureeight motion that increases feeding capacity and produces a post-crush at the outlet—like two crushers in one. t A pre-screen feature available on the PC 6 model for higher value end product. t Track mounted for mobility and maneuverability in a smaller footprint. t National support for parts and service from Atlas Copco Powercrusher—POWER is just the beginning. 800-732-6762 Atlas Copco Construction & Mining www.atlascopco.us

Kolberg, Astec Release New ‘Facts & Figures’ Reference Guide KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens has released its newest version of “Facts & Figures,” a quick reference guide containing comprehensive general technical information for aggregate and recycle producers, operators, engineers and maintenance personnel of KPI-JCI or equivalent crushing, screening, washing and material handling equipment. The 216-page, pocket-sized book is the fourth edition since Kolberg Pioneer Inc. began producing it in 1988. The guide’s roots trace back more than 50 years ago, however, when Pioneer developed a Facts & Figures book in Minneapolis, Minn. Kolberg began producing an Aggregate Reference Guide during the 1970s, and when Pioneer moved to Yankton, S.D., to join forces with Kolberg, the book was combined into one, known as the Facts & Figures book. The company recently held a Facts & Figures contest on its Facebook page to promote the new release, giving away two iPad 2 tablets to the fans that possessed the oldest
Facts & Figures books. Each participant in the contest received a free copy of the Facts & Figures book and a KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens hat. Lisa Carson, director of marketing of KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens, said the Facts & Figures guides are in high demand due to their usefulness for both those in the field and those selling equipment. “These pocket-sized guides are able to go everywhere and answer questions on the spot that helps minimize downtime and lets producers make the best decisions possible to make their operations most profitable,” Carson said. “The guides have helped elevate KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens into the industry leader it is today.” To request a free copy of KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens’ Facts & Figures book, contact Kate Shoemaker at 605/6689311, ext. 2212. MDOT: No Funds to Extend Highway 24 Section to Four Lanes MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) The Mississippi Department of Transportation said it has no money to extend the four-laning of state Highway 24 beyond East Fork — and that portion has been delayed. The Enterprise-Journal reported that the original plans called for four lanes on Highway 24 from McComb to Liberty, Highway 48 from The McComb Liberty to Centreville to East Fork and Highway 24 from Centreville to section has been Woodville. MDOT District delayed from Engineer Albert White 2013 to 2015. said the McComb to East Fork section has been delayed from 2013 to 2015, and the rest is on hold indefinitely. Crews Look Forward to Spring 2012 Completion After Six-Month Delay

BRIDGE from page 1
Winston-Salem between the highway’s intersections with Peacehaven Road and Lewisville-Clemmons Road. Traffic across Muddy Creek has increased in recent years as more and more people have chosen to live in the Lewisville/Clemmons area of western Forsyth County and commute into Winston-Salem. In addition, with U.S. 421 North and South now a four-lane road throughout all of Yadkin, Wilkes and Watauga counties to the west, travelers from the eastern half of the state are finding the route easier to drive on trips to the mountains. Weather Always a Concern Relatively mild winter weather had helped construction crews make significant progress on the bridge and road work in the last few months until wet and chilly conditions in late January slowed things down, said NCDOT engineer Wright Archer. “We are now in the concrete bridgedeck phase, so it would really have to dry out quite a bit before we do any more,” Wright said on Jan. 23. “It really needs to be drier and a little warmer so that we can get on that bridge-deck work, then we are hoping to work on the shoulders and the final asphalt work, all of which is weather dependent.” The project was initially supposed to be completed last fall, but ran into a six-month delay when crews unexpectedly found hard rock in the ground when they were ready to put in the bridges’ supports. Old Spans Lasted More Than 50 Years The $8.1 million project will not only replace the old bridges, each built in 1958, but also will widen the roadway considerably and expand the ramps leading to and from Peacehaven Road, just east of Muddy Creek. Wider shoulders also will be finished in the coming weeks. Smith-Rowe LLC, a Mt. Airy-based contractor, is in charge of working on the project. When work began two years ago, crews from Smith-Rowe first built new 200-ft.-long (61 m) bridges on the outside of the existing bridges that continued to carry traffic. When that was fin-

ished, traffic was then re-routed onto them and the more than 50-year-old spans were demolished. Once that was completed, workmen began erecting the second set of new bridges over the footprints of the old overpasses. Eventually, each set of bridges — one to carry north-bound traffic and one to carry south-bound traffic — will be joined to make two wide overpasses. Each new bridge section utilizes precast concrete girders, the last of which was installed in December. “Right now, obviously, the wet weather has us stopped, but we are waiting to start on some approach slabs, the reinforced bridge approaches, and we have another section of bridge deck to pour, which we hope to do in the next two or three weeks, if we have decent weather,” Archer added. “Then we will really be waiting on the warmer weather so that we can pave.” Archer said that on a slow day, only five or six workmen can usually be found working at the site, but on days when a bridge concrete pour was happening, 15 or more people may have
worked at the site. A variety of equipment has been used on the Muddy Creek project, including both a Link-Belt and a Kobelco crane to lift and place sections of the bridges. Unsafe at Any Speed The new overpasses across Muddy Creek were initially planned to be replaced as part of the much larger Northern Beltway project, an ambitious effort to build a freeway loop around Winston-Salem. The 30-mi. (48 km) long route has been in the planning stages since 1999, but lawsuits and budget problems have delayed the effort indefinitely. However, the NCDOT decided in 2009 not to wait for the Northern Beltway issues to get resolved and to go ahead and replace the Muddy Creek bridges as they were deemed to be unsafe for traffic. Canada Hopes United States Reconsiders Keystone Pipeline PIPELINE from page 1
pipeline will be accepted on its merits. Andrew MacDougall, a spokesman of Harper, said that Obama explained the decision was not on the merits of the pipeline, but rather on the “arbitrary nature of the Feb. 21 deadline set by the Republicans as part of a tax measure he signed. Obama said the decision was without prejudice, meaning that TransCanada is free to reapply. The Calgary, Alberta-based company said in a statement that it would reapply and said it expects the presidential permit to be processed in an expedited manner that would allow the pipeline to go online in late 2014. TransCanada CEO Russ Girling said in a statement that plans are already under way to largely maintain the construction schedule of the project. He said the project is too important to the U.S. economy and the Canadian economy for it not to proceed. MacDougall said Harper told Obama that he hoped the pipeline would eventually be approved. The pipeline is critical to Canada, which must have infrastructure in place to export its growing oil sands production from northern
Alberta. The region has the world’s third largest oil reserves with 170 billion barrels of proven reserves. Daily production of 1.5 million barrels from the oil sands is expected to increase to 3.7 million in 2025. Only Saudi Arabia and Venezuela have more reserves. MacDougall said Harper also reiterated to Obama that Canada will look to sell its oil to Asia. Harper previously called Obama’s decision to delay the Keystone XL delay a “wake up call and said Canada is far too dependent on the United States, which Canada relies on for 97 percent of its energy exports. With the product of oil sands and pipeline delivery to the United States under perennial clouds of environmental objection, Canada wants to ensure a market for the growing production. The price of North American oil also sells for less than oil sold internationally because of a glut of Canadian oil in Cushing, Okla., so shipping the oil to Asia would command a better price. Alberta Premier Alison Redford said Obama’s decision strengthens Canada’s resolve to pursue access to alternative markets.

Toro Dingo TX 525 N.C. Firm Loses ‘Remarkable Leader’ Delivers Torque in Compact Design COBLE from page 1
The Toro Dingo TX 525 narrow track compact utility loader features a 25-hp (18.6 kW) Kubota diesel engine for added torque and hydraulic flow in a compact design. With an overall width of 33.7 in. (85 cm), this machine easily fits through doors and gates that are 35 in. (89 cm) wide or slightly less, providing entry to interior and exterior spaces previously inaccessible with a loader. As a result, operators are able to put a hydraulic power plant on their job site to make them more productive, according to the manufacturer. The Toro TX 525 narrow track weighs 1,904 lbs. (863 kg) — 2030 lbs. with bucket — and measures 92 in. (233.6 cm) in length with a bucket, making it compact enough to work in the tightest places. The 5.9 in. (15 cm) wide tracks on the unit distribute the weight to a mere 5.2 psi for flotation in soft ground conditions. The Dingo TX 525 narrow track model offers users added torque for increased pulling and digging force when using attachments in aggressive or rocky conditions. In addition to the added power it delivers, the TX 525 narrow track represents a convenient choice for contractors or rental yard operators who currently utilize all diesel-powered equipment and prefer to expand their fleet with the same fueled machine, according to the manufacturer. The TX 525 narrow track loader has a rated operating capacity of 553 lbs. (35 percent of tip capacity) and delivers 16.9 gpm (64 Lpm) of flow to each track, 13.8 gpm (52 Lpm) to the auxiliary, and 6 gpm (22.7 Lpm) to the loader arm. For more information, call 800/344-8676 or visit www.toro.com/dingo.

Mr. Coble’s natural entrepreneurial bent was evident early in his career. After graduating from Liberty University, he became the executive pilot of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, former president of Liberty University. While waiting for Falwell to finish speaking engagements, Mr. Coble would work the phones at regional airports, calling local construction firms to see if they were interested in buying or selling equipment. His sideline interest soon turned into a full-scale brokerage. Conflicted by a desire to be in ministry and business, his mind was set at ease by a piece of timely advice from Rev. Falwell: “Tom, God needs businessmen just like he needs pastors.” Emboldened and freed by that advice, Mr. Coble went into business full time and launched what was to be a truly remarkable career. Mr. Coble developed a philosophy of business that was firmly grounded in his faith. Among his heroes were R.G. LeTourneau, Art DeMoss and Stanley Tam, men whose beliefs and generosity were unashamedly intertwined with the companies they operated. When asked about his personal success in business, Mr. Coble would often
reply, “Business is simple. Faith and hard work go hand-in-hand. You pray as if everything depends on God, and you work as if everything depends on you.” Among numerous other honors, Mr. Coble received the 2011 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, given in recognition of his leadership at Coble Trench Safety in the Carolinas and beyond. Mr. Coble’s quick wit, positive attitude, unstoppable drive and solid faith made him a force in his industry. Despite the business success that would distinguish a lesser man, those who knew Mr. Coble will remember him for a higher purpose. Mr. Coble leveraged his natural affinity for business to fund numerous ministries and charities on the local, regional, national and international levels. One of his greatest delights was personally signing checks each month for the outreaches and efforts he supported. Mr. Coble was particularly interested in helping young people grow into motivated Christian leaders, a conviction that caused him to be involved in Alamance County’s Young Life chapter. A solid and unapologetic Christian, Mr. Coble attended Harvest Baptist
Church in Burlington and led Alamance County’s Coalition of Concerned Christians. Among other charitable contributions, Mr. Coble personally paid for a radio tower in South America to open a new region for the Bible Broadcasting Network. In every check his company issued, Mr. Coble made sure a Gospel tract was tucked in to prompt the recipients to consider where they would spend eternity. Mr. Coble is survived by his wife, Debby Coble; parents, PJ and Donna Coble; son, Matt Coble; future daughter-in-law, Ning Yang Gu; daughter, Misty Hedspeth; son-in-law, Matt Hedspeth; and grandchildren: Ryan, Peter and Rosemary. Effective immediately, Matt Coble, Tom Coble’s son, will assume the role of president of Coble Trench Safety. Brett Sondergard will continue to serve as vice president of sales. Despite its considerable loss, Coble Trench Safety will continue to grow and serve customers across the southeast. “The employees of Coble Trench Safety have lost a remarkable leader,” said Steve Barnhardt, CTS regional manager. “Tom was a man of conviction, faith and integrity. He will be greatly missed.”
Construction Materials Prices Drop Again; Remain Up From December 2010 The amount contractors pay for a range of key construction materials edged down 0.2 percent in December but climbed 5.3 percent from a year earlier, according to an analysis of producer price index figures released Jan. 18 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Meanwhile, the amount contractors charge to construct projects remained largely flat for the month and is up only between 3.3 and 4.7 percent for the year, cutting into contractor earnings and adding to the challenges the hard-hit industry is facing, association officials said. “Any relief contractors might get from the recent declines in materials prices is being offset by their inability to increase prices for new construction projects,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “With overall demand relatively weak and public sector investments in construction declining rapidly, construction remains a buyer’s market.” Simonson noted that prices for many key construction materials declined between November and
December. The price index for diesel fuel dropped 7.8 percent in November, yet remains up 20.2 percent compared to December 2010. The index for copper and brass mill shapes continue to decline from record high levels early this year, sinking 0.4 percent in December and down 9.3 percent for the year. Likewise, steel mill products dropped in price for the month, by 0.6 percent, but rose 11.3 percent from a year earlier. Meanwhile, the index for asphalt paving mixtures and blocks increased 0.4 percent in December and 8.4 percent for the year. Despite inching up slightly in recent months, the price indexes for finished nonresidential buildings, which measure what contractors estimate they would charge to put up new structures, have lagged compared to the yearover-year increases in materials costs, Simonson observed. The index for new industrial buildings actually declined 0.1 percent in December and is up only 3.3 percent for the year. The index for new office construction inched up 0.2 percent for the month and 3.9 percent for the year. The price
for new warehouse construction was unchanged in December and rose 3.8 percent compared to December 2010. And the price for new school construction was up 0.1 percent for the month and 4.7 percent for the year. Association officials said the fact contractors continue to be squeezed between materials costs and what they can charge is making difficult market conditions worse. They said Congress and federal officials could provide needed help by enacting a series of measures to boost private sector demand and counter recent declines in public sector construction activity. “The fundamentals are the same for construction as for any other industry, uncertainty breeds caution and stifles demand,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “The best way to boost demand for construction is for Washington to set permanent tax rates and enact long-term infrastructure and investment measures, including for aging highway, transit, aviation and water systems.”
