Rental Industry Expects Rebound in Coming Months

Scrapers and wheel dozers work to rebuild the cavern carved under a portion of SR-330.

In late December, a severe storm caused roadway washouts and slides along State Route 330 — the primary route to and from Southern California’s two most frequented ski/snowboarding mountains and Big Bear Lake. The damage has resulted in a full closure of SR-330 for a year. The major damage took place at one location, where a complete roadway washout and road undermining occurred. According to Caltrans District 8, an 8 ft. (2.4 cm) deep hole — directly beneath the pavement — was created when the upbound lane of SR-330 washed down into City

A large majority of rental store owners and managers — more than 80 percent — expect 2011 to be a much better year than 2010 according to the latest quarterly American Rental Association (ARA) Economic Survey of members. More than 34 percent of ARA general members responding to the survey expect rental revenues to show double-digit increases in 2011 versus 2010 and another 46 percent expect at least single-digit increases this year. The results show a growing optimism for a significant rebound in 2011 as only about half of the respondents said revenues increased in 2010 compared to 2009. Nearly 30 percent of the respondents had revenue declines in 2010, but only 4 percent expect a drop in revenue in 2011. Nearly 70 percent of the respondents also expect to spend more on new rental equipment purchases in 2011 compared to 2010, a significant increase over last year. The spending expectations of general members also match up with the sales forecasts of ARA associate member equipment suppliers as more than 83 percent of the associate member survey respondents expect increased sales into the rental channel, including 52 percent that expect double-digit sales increases.

Caterpillar’s Strong Quarter Profit Hints at Growth By Josh Funk AP BUSINESS WRITER

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar’s soaring profit reflects strong demand in developing nations and offers reasons for optimism about the global economy and the prospects for other American manufacturers. “They are a pretty good barometer,” analyst Jeff Windau with Edward Jones said of Caterpillar Inc.

That’s because Caterpillar sells its yellowand-black mining and construction equipment around the world and can benefit from growth wherever it’s occurring, while its reach also means the company’s business reflects global economic trends. Caterpillar predicts the world’s economy as a whole will grow at a lukewarm rate of 3.5 percent in 2011, but developing regions will grow at nearly double that pace and continue buying equipment for mining and for upgrad-

ing their infrastructure. Caterpillar, based in Peoria, Ill., said Jan. 27 that its fourth-quarter net income more than quadrupled to $968 million, or $1.47 per share, on $12.8 billion revenue. Those results beat analysts’ expectations and easily topped the $232 million in net income, or 36 cents per share, that it earned a year earlier on $7.9 billion in revenue. see GROWTH page 32

Preserving History...

Volvo, Arnold Machinery Donate Road Building Equipment to Museum Volvo Construction Equipment and Arnold Machinery Inc., the Volvo Construction Equipment dealer in four western states, have delivered a Volvo DD29 asphalt compactor to the Vietnam Aviation Veterans of Arizona Memorial Museum in Maricopa, Ariz., as a contribution to the museum’s support and recognition of United States military veterans. The Vietnam Aviation Veterans of Arizona was created in 2000 with the primary mission to establish a museum to pay tribute to and memorialize the veterans of the Vietnam War and all veterans of the United States military. The museum and its displays, dedicated to educating the public on military aviation and its impact on the defense of the country, is open daily, with no admission fee, to the public. It has a flyin type airfield for “fly and view” visits. The museum is located approximately 30 mi. southwest of Phoenix. The Volvo DD29 roller compaction machine will be used by the fly-in museum to maintain and service the 2,600 ft. runway, taxiways, and infrastructure at the institution. Colonel Charles Millar, president of the Memorial Museum, commended the two companies for their donation and support of the organization. “Companies like Arnold and Volvo are key to the success of the many veterans’ organizations throughout the United Mike Mundt: (904) 625-9259 MichaelMundt@fccef.com Sarah Spraggins: (904) 625-9274 SarahSpraggins@fccef.com Toll Free: (800) 207-9286

States. Their participation in our program brings credit to the veterans that have sacrificed so much for this great country. I cannot express enough our gratitude to them.” In a joint statement upon the delivery of the equipment to the museum, Tom O’Byrne, president, Construction Equipment Division, Arnold Machinery, Phoenix, Ariz., and Göran Lindgren, president and chief executive officer, Volvo Construction Equipment North America, Asheville, N.C., said: “We take a great deal of pride in making this donation to the museum. It is the very least that we can do to recognize and support the organization’s tremendous dedication to duty, to the military veterans of the United States.” Lindgren praised O’Byrne and the management of Arnold Machinery for their participation and role in making this contribution possible. “Their generosity and spirit of support for this unique institution meets the highest standards of community service,” Lindgren said. Arnold Machinery represents Volvo Construction Equipment with nine sales and service centers in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. The company’s headquarters are in Salt Lake City, Utah. Less than 20 percent of the associate member respondents said sales into the rental channel decreased in 2010 while only 1 percent of the respondents expect a decrease in 2011. “Clearly ARA members are more optimistic about 2011 and have a positive mindset,” said Christine Wehrman, ARA’s executive vice president and CEO. “This underscores the importance of The Rental Show in Las Vegas. The timing is right for solidifying the buyer and seller connections, learning how to further promote the rental concept and taking advantage of tax benefits.” The Rental Show is scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2, 2011, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. “Rental companies can benchmark their businesses against these survey results and The Rental Show also provides a great opportunity for attendees to validate the survey results by visiting with other rental operators and exhibitors,” Wehrman said. The survey results reflect a snapshot in time of those who responded and may not be representative of the industry as a whole. For more information, www.ARArental.org.

America’s PC450LC-8 Komatsu hydraulic excavator has a standard heavyduty boom, and offers reduced noise levels inside the cab. Komatsu’s latest series delivers maximum digging force with fuel economy in tough digging conditions, according to the manufacturer. The PC450LC-8, with a flywheel horsepower of 345 hp (257 kW), has an operating weight of 100,860 lbs. (45,749 kg), and is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D125E-5 engine. The electronically controlled HPCR (high pressure common rail) fuel injection system provides low noise operation, and remains fuel efficient while delivering power and productivity. The PC450LC-8 is equipped with KOMTRAX technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure Web site utilizing wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts are relayed to the web application for analysis. The KOMTRAX fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency and productivity, according to the manufacturer. Special features of the PC450LC-8 include: Large Multi-Color Monitor The 7 in. LCD monitor enables accurate smooth work and displays data in 10 languages for global support. There are five modes of operation that may be selected through the monitor panel: power mode, economy mode, lifting mode, breaker mode and attachment mode. The monitor panel displays the machine maintenance tracking and the image from the standard, counterweight-mounted rearview camera system. Built for Durability and Reliability All major components on the PC450LC-8 including the engine, hydraulic pumps, motors, and control valves are exclusively designed and produced by Komatsu. A heavy duty boom design is now standard equipment. The boom and arms also exhibit long-term durability and are resistant to bending and torsional stress due to large cross-sectional structures, thick high tensile strength steel, interior partition walls, and large one piece castings. Komatsu frames are designed using the most advanced threedimensional CAD and FEM analysis technology.

Electronic components such as controllers, connectors, sensors and wiring have undergone extensive testing to ensure reliability in the harshest conditions. The electronic connectors are DT-type and seal against dirt and moisture. All hydraulic cylinders are protected by metal guard rings for additional reliability. Hydraulic hoses are equipped with O-ring seals versus conventional taper seals to provide extended leakfree life. Long replacement intervals for hydraulic oil, engine oil and filters keep the machine up and running for increased hours on the job. Versatility to Match Different Job Applications The PC450LC-8 comes equipped with

two boom mode settings, five working modes and Power Max control. These modes are designed to match engine speed, pump flow and system pressure to specific application requirements, providing the operator with the flexibility to match equipment performance to the job at hand. With many excavators operating a wide variety of working attachments, the PC450LC-8 is equipped with breaker mode (single action circuit) and attachment mode (double action circuit) that allow the operator to adjust hydraulic flow directly from the cab through the large monitor panel. The attachment flow control has been improved and is more flexible for effortless attachment adjustments. Cab Enhancements Provide Comfortable Working Environment A wide spacious cab with a high back operator seat provides support and comfort for reduced fatigue and higher productivity. The multi-position, PPC (pressure proportional control) levers and armrest integrated with the console levers allow the operator to work in comfort while maintaining precise control. Surgical-Precision Demolition From Kroeker Inc. For some folks, building demolition conjures up images of a wrecking ball slamming into the side of a building or an aging Vegas casino imploding into a cloud of dust. But the truth is that in today’s highly regulated, extraordinarily safety-conscious demolition

Jeff Kroeker, Kroeker Inc.

industry, those spectacular sights are rarely seen. The tools of the trade most often used now are excavators equipped with an arsenal of specialized hydraulic attachments. Shears, grapples, hammers, and processors surgically execute section-by-section decon-

struction. Simply put, excavators and their hydraulic tools have revolutionized demolition.

as your track record. It also can be based on how green your equipment is. Having latemodel equipment that can handle the latest attachments is very important. In order to be competitive, you better have the right equipment.

Times Are A’Changin’ “We’ve come a long way in a short amount of time,” said Jeff Kroeker, Kroeker Inc., Fresno, Calif. “The materials are not just wadded up in a ball and hauled off anymore. We have to be selective in the demolition process. We have to abate any hazardous materials. We have to figure out the best way to bring down a structure safely and efficiently, and how to segregate the majority of our waste stream onsite. We recycle about 85 percent of our building debris and 100 percent of our concrete. We resell what at one time would have gone to a landfill. The industry has changed by leaps and bounds.” Kroeker is in a position to know. Currently the secretary of the National Demolition Association (NDA), Jeff has been on the board for 11 years. He finds, among other things, the networking aspect extraordinarily helpful in his day-to- This specially equipped ZX450 has an 82-ft. Downtime is everything. We have a contract to fulfill; we have people waiting. But with the Hitachi dealer network, it is a huge asset to have that kind of horsepower and resources behind us.” Orange Power Kroeker Inc. has a Zaxis 450LC, specially equipped by Jewell with a tilting cab and an 82-ft. (25 m) long-reach arm. They also have a ZX200LC-3. “Our operators are happy with the creature comforts of Hitachi. They sit in there eight to ten hours a day. They have the same productivity in the eighth hour of the shift as they do in the first because they’re not beat up.” Kroeker makes it a policy to involve equipment operators in the selection process. Asking them what the most productive and

The company’s philosophy is that when they buy a machine, they finance it for three or four years and get a full-coverage warranty for that time period. They find it’s a great insurance package — they won’t have an extra eight- or ten-thousand dollar expense if they lose a pump. “This business is mechanical,” noted Kroeker. “Something’s going to break — it’s either going to be the building or the machine. By applying the right tool and right leverage, it should be the building that gives. You don’t go in headstrong. You use the attachments to complement the excavator rather than rely on brute force. And it’s an educational process. Sometimes you’ve got to think your way through and come up with different approaches.”

Versatility is Key Generational family-owned demolition companies are the norm in this business, and Kroeker is no exception. It’s owned by Jeff’s mom, Joyce, and his dad Ed, and sister Jill help run the day-to-day operations. However, unlike a number of their competitors, the company offers an extraordinarily large range of services. Their many licenses include general engineering contractor; earthwork and paving; building, moving, wrecking; well drilling; hazardous substances removal; and asbestos. The company is licensed to work in California as well as Arizona and Nevada. Jeff is personally licensed in New Mexico and Hawaii, further showcasing the company’s depth of experience. These certifications let the company offer seamless, turnkey operations, often without the use of subs. They own roll-offs, their own fleet of trucks, and even operate their own 47-acre This eco-friendly demolition job in San Francisco was C&D recycling facility, a big hit with the contractor and the city. complete with a huge horimost comfortable machine out there led the zontal grinder to handle wood, an onsite company to Hitachi. Of course, pricing and crusher, and a 31-station picking belt where workers separate debris by hand for a more support were crucial, too. “We looked at several brands and Hitachi complete recycling process. “One-hundred percent of our concrete came in with the best number first. The other guys then revised their numbers downward. and asphalt gets recycled,” said Kroeker. “I To my mind, we made a deal and it’s not a can’t think of the last time we buried congame. I’m not in the used-car business. Give crete. I know in other parts of the country, me your best number and I’m going to move where there is an abundance of limestone or quarries, they still bury some. But in forward.”

Common Misconceptions About Demolition (courtesy National Demolition Association) Misconception

• Demolition contractors primarily implode or blow up buildings. • Demolition contractors unnecessarily overcrowd landfills with debris. • Demolition contractors don’t participate in the nation’s recycling effort. • Demolition is a primitive business.

Fact

• Implosions account for less than one percent of all demolition work. • The industry is reducing its use of landfills in favor of recycling. • The demolition industry was salvaging building elements and materials for reuse long before it was the green thing to do. • A safe and successful demolition project requires working knowledge of construction and the law.

California, there’s a huge push to save our virgin materials for either ready-mix or asphalt products and utilize our recycled concrete and asphalt for road base.” Reaching the Future Kroeker’s high-reach ZX450 and his more traditional ZX200 have been wellaccepted on job sites. Clients are impressed by their mobility, breakout force, smoothness, and quiet operation. They’re also impressed by the skilled touch of their operators. In addition to the long arm and tilting cab, the ZX450 also has a water line that runs up to the processor to hold down dust.

A remote camera at the end of the arm enables the operator to see precisely what he is doing as he manipulates the universal processor over 80 ft. (24.4 m) in the air. “We had a job in downtown San Francisco to partially tear down an old sixstory apartment complex. We couldn’t close the sidewalks or the street, and had to leave part of the roof intact. “Our high-reach ZX450 was ideal for the job and was a big hit with the contractor and the city. It represents the future of demolition.” This story was reprinted with permission from Hitachi Breakout Magazine, Second Issue 2010.

The National Demolition Association The National Demolition Association represents more than 1,000 U.S. and Canadian demolition companies. It provides information on advances in equipment, services, and educational programs. The NDA helps keep regulators informed about issues in the demolition industry while increasing public awareness of the economic and societal benefits of demolition. The NDA has been taking a proactive approach to working with federal agencies responsible for regulations, such as the EPA and OSHA. In fact, a recent demolition academy was held at OSHA headquarters in Chicago. The thinking is that by helping design legislation, the results will be workable and practical. For example, since highreach excavators are relatively new in the United States but common in Europe, the NDA is consulting with its European counterpart to review some of their policies and then go to OSHA to suggest rules and guidelines. AED Holds Annual Summit, CONDEX

A

In it for the long haul, Towmaster trailers has been supporting AED and CONDEX for many years. (L-R) are Dave Lundin, CFO Janelle Johnson and Lennie Stulc.

(L-R): Stopping by the Construction Equipment Guide booth are 2011 AED Chairman Dennis Kruepke, his wife Barb and Rick Dahl, president of Metrolift Inc.

(L-R): Barry, Matt and Anne Stoughton, all of BLS Enterprises Inc., Itasca, Ill., display their tufpads and rubber tracks.

ED held its annual Summit & CONDEX show Jan. 26 to 28 in Orlando, Fla. Representatives from the industry’s leading dealerships and manufacturers from the United States, Canada and abroad attended the AED convention. The mood during the show and conference was upbeat. After two consecutive years of dramatic declines in the market, in 2010 dealers in the United States saw sales improve between 10 and 15 percent. During the Chairman’s Inaugural Breakfast Jan. 28, North American construction equipment distributors elected Dennis Kruepke to the position of 2011 Chairman of Associated Equipment Distributors. Kruepke is president and CEO of McCann Industries, Addison, Ill., the Case dealer serving the Chicago metro area. Kruepke entered the construction equipment industry through manufacturing doors, initially with Gehl, then Toyota’s skid steer group and Mustang. He joined Dick McCann’s company in 1995 as partner and president of then newly formed McCann Power & Equipment — the company merged that business with its McCann Construction Specialities in 2000, and Kruepke was named president and CEO. Also during the summit, AED announced its 2011 legislative priorities. “What happens in Washington will, to a great extent, determine whether AED members are able to grow and prosper, or whether the equipment industry continues to scrape by or shrink further,” said AED President and CEO Toby Mack. “The association will aggressively push for robust and sustained infrastructure investments and tax and labor policies that create an environment conducive for job creation and economic growth.” “Underinvestment in our national infrastructure poses a serious challenge to our economic growth and must be a top congressional priority,” said AED Vice President of Government Affairs Christian Klein. “When combined with tax policies that have stifled growth and discouraged investments, the construction equipment industry has been hit especially hard. Without a new approach, industry unemployment will continue to outpace other sectors and America’s economic well being and competitiveness will be severely undermined.”

IronPlanet’s display drew a lot of activity. The company is now doing weekly online auctions.

Midland Manufacturing and its U.S. distributors had an astounding year in 2010, having maxed out its production capabilities; the company already has made plans to expand production for 2011.

Paladin and its large variety of construction equipment attachments had a strong showing at CONDEX.

Among the most innovative new products displayed at the CONDEX show was the Arctic Sectional Snowplow. Randy Strait (L), president of Arctic & Ice Control Products and one of the largest snow removal contractors in the Midwest, explains his products’ benefits to representatives of Ohio CAT.

LuiGong showcased an extensive lineup of its heavy equipment.

Second PIRTEK Center Opens in Woodinville, Wash.

PIRTEK Woodinville opened its doors on Jan. 10, providing an ETA 1 Hour OnSite Hose Service to the Seattle area. PIRTEK Woodinville is now the second Center serving the Seattle area. PIRTEK Woodinville will be spearheaded by PIRTEK’s newest franchise owner and Bellevue resident, Chad Harkness. Harkness is no stranger to franchise operations and sales with more than 30 years combined experience at A & G Leasing, A Budget Rent a Car Franchise, and both Avis & Budget Rent a Car Corporate operations, in Colorado and Seattle. “The Seattle market is already a successful one for PIRTEK and we are poised to serve the diverse industries we are surrounded by in the Eastside and North Puget Sound Areas,” said Harkness. The new PIRTEK center is located at 16140 Woodinville-Redmond Road NE, Ste 8, Woodinville, WA 98072, near its industrial, construction and manufacturing customers. It also is just 30 minutes from the nearby town of Everett. The 3,200 sq. ft. center features a 2,100

ft. warehouse stock full of the more common hose and fittings as well as the hard to find metric fittings and adapters. The team of employees includes three factory trained mobile sales and service technicians (MSSTs), and an operations manager. Three mobile service vans are available. This second location follows the opening of PIRTEK Kent in 2006. PIRTEK offers a 24 hour, 7 day service that serves almost every facet of industry including construction, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture and engineering among others. When an equipment breakdown occurs, it often results in costly delays in time and labor before the proper replacement hose is located and installed but PIRTEK vans carry the component parts necessary to manufacture hose assemblies on site. Hose and fittings also can be purchased over-the-counter at PIRTEK’s national network of service centers that serve as home bases to its mobile fleet. There are nearly 40 PIRTEK service centers nationwide and more than 170 PIRTEK mobile service vans serving major metropolitan markets throughout the country.

Strong Fourth Quarter Hints at Growth Within Industry GROWTHfrom page 1

Chief Financial Officer Ed Rapp said increases in gross domestic product of roughly 6 percent in developing countries are leading naturally to rising demand for Caterpillar’s products. As China and India urbanize, they will need more and better infrastructure, and their people will demand a higher standard of living, which also feeds demand for products and commodities, Rapp said. “The road to progress begins with the road. Period. You’ve got to have that basic infrastructure,” Rapp said. Caterpillar said it hired about 19,000 people in 2010, including 7,500 in the United States as it ramped up to meet demand. Those hires restored more than half the 37,000 full-time, contract and part-time jobs the company eliminated during the recession. At the end of the year, the company had 104,490 employees, a little more than half working outside the United States. The company plans to invest about $3 billion in capital projects in 2011, more than half in the United States. It is trying to boost production to reduce the wait for its mining equipment, now eight to 18 months.

“They do have a significant base in the U.S., so it does give us a window on what’s happening here domestically,” Windau said. A hitch could come with inflation, which could hurt the bottom line for manufacturers because it makes their raw materials more expensive. But for Caterpillar, higher commodity costs also means more demand for mining equipment, which can help its bottom line. Manufacturing remains a major source of U.S. economic activity, at 11.2 percent, down from a peak of 28.3 percent of U.S. economic activity in 1953, according to the Commerce Department. Growth in manufacturing was a key force pulling the U.S. economy out of recession. Factories added 136,000 jobs last year, the first annual gain since 1997. And the U.S. manufacturing sector is the world’s largest, producing 21 percent of all manufactured goods globally, according to the National Association of Manufacturers. Japan comes in at No. 2 with 13 percent, and China rounds at the top three with 12 percent, the trade group said. Other U.S. manufacturers could benefit from the forces buoying Caterpillar. And General Electric Co. — which makes prod-

ucts from dishwashers to wind turbines and derives about one-fourth of its profit from its financing business, GE Capital — released an encouraging fourth-quarter report Jan. 21. GE said its quarterly net income rose 52 percent from a year earlier, and CEO Jeff Immelt has said he expects GE’s profit to be driven by industrial growth in China. The company earned $4.46 billion on revenue of $41.4 billion for the period that ended Dec. 31. Its quarterly revenue rose just 1 percent, but it was the first increase from a year earlier in nine quarters. Eaton Corp., which makes hydraulic and transmission systems for the auto and space industries and military, said Jan. 27 that its bookings rose 36 percent for the quarter that ended Dec. 31. Its quarterly net income rose 17 percent to $280 million on revenue of $3.7 billion, also up 17 percent. The positive outlook for Caterpillar and other manufacturers depends on the economy continuing to recover. They would receive a major boost if the U.S. housing market rebounded. Conversely, Caterpillar said its results will be hurt if governments act prematurely to fight inflation by raising interest rates. Caterpillar announced plans in 2010 to

build three new facilities in the United States and five in other countries as it works to move production closer to where its equipment will be sold. It said its sales in the developing world remain at or near record levels, though its sales in North America and Europe remain depressed. “While sales rose, they are still far below previous highs with room to improve as economic growth and construction activity picks up. New machine sales in the U.S., for example, are still less than half their prior peak which was in 2006,” said Mike DeWalt, the company’s director of investor relations. The company predicts a 2011 profit of nearly $6 per share on more than $50 billion in sales. Analysts are expecting $5.84 a share on $48.6 billion. “I just think the company is well-positioned from a long-term growth perspective,” Windau said. For all of 2010 Caterpillar reported net income of $2.7 billion, or $4.15 per share, on revenue of $42.6 billion. That’s considerably better than the previous year’s $895 million net income, or $1.43 per share, on revenue of $32.4 billion.

Series of LF Forward Compaction Plates Dynapac’s new series of LF forward compaction plates feature improved speed, flexibility and performance. The LF 50 (110-lb. [50 kg] class) and the LF 60 (132-lb. [60 kg] class) are ideal for small soil jobs and narrow trenches. In the 286-lb. (130 kg) class, the LF 130 is designed for heavy-duty soil applications and has the highest compaction performance in the Dynapac range. Engineered for soil applications and available with a number of options to customize the plates, the new models are approximately 20 percent faster than their predecessors, according to the manufacturer. The LF series is equipped with Dynapac’s Low-Vib handle, which reduces exposure to hand-arm transmitted vibrations and increases operator comfort. For tight spaces, the handle is aligned with the center of the plate for easy maneuverability. The handle can be raised to a vertical operational position, and then easily folded for transportation and storage. All models offer a wide variety of optional

equipment such as lifting handles, block paving kits and a protection frame suitable for rental applications, all of which makes it possible to customize the machine. On the soil versions, a company can put its own branding on the cover. All three models feature a Honda engine, and the LF 130 also can be special ordered with a Hatz engine. Field kits are Volvo CE manufactures two models of high-frequency, high-amplitude compactors — the available. DD118HFA and the DD138HFA.

Volvo Compactors Provide High Frequency, Amplitude

The LF 50 and the LF 60 are ideal for small soil jobs and narrow trenches. The LF 130 is designed for heavy-duty soil applications.

Volvo CE manufactures two models of high-frequency, high-amplitude compactors — the DD118HFA and the DD138HFA. Through the SMART drum technology, each of these HFA compactors can be used for a wide range of applications. These high-frequency compactors are engineered with eight amplitude settings. Each amplitude setting is automatically adjusted to the highest frequency for that amplitude selection. This enables the operator to use lower amplitudes with higher frequency on thinner lifts to increase productivity with decreased risk of damage to aggregate structure or sub-grade, and higher amplitude with lower frequency on thicker lifts and stiffer materials. This flexibility once required two separate compactors; Volvo technology enables one compactor to provide both ends of the spectrum in performance. Other SMART technologies designed into these three compactors include: • SMART vibration system, which automatically adjusts vibration frequency for both drums to the design frequency for the given amplitude

• SMART propulsion system automatically controls rolling speed for optimum drum impact spacing • SMART water system not only shuts off water spray whenever the compactor stops moving, but also automatically regulates water-flow rates to match rolling speed • SMART start, which prevents vibration of the trailing drum on cold or hard pavement surfaces at the beginning of each paving operation, or at transverse joints on bridges or junctions with PCC pavement panels Making an Impact These compactors are designed to keep up with pavers moving at faster lay-down speeds while maintaining appropriate drum impact spacing, reducing the need for additional compactors on the job, according to the manufacturer. The impact meter measures the relationship between the compactor’s vibration frequency and its rolling speed to accurately indicate the number of see VOLVO page 38

Smooth Operation Another Volvo performance advantage is chamfered, radiused edges on the drums. This minimizes drum marking and maintains smooth surfaces as the roller makes its passes. The drum wetting system is available on all models. The dual water spray system incorporates primary and secondary spray components. Each drum has independent water storage tanks and two water pumps, two primary filters, separate water distribution lines and two spray bars with hand-serviceable nozzles. Better drum surface coverage and reduced misting is achieved with 10 nozzles on each DD118HFA spray bar; the DD138HFA spray bars are fitted with 12 nozzles each.

Two 164-gal. (620 L) water tanks are monitored by the illuminated water-level indicator. In its highest amplitude setting, the DD118HFA has a maximum centrifugal force of 42,070 lbs. (187.1 kN). Vibration frequency ranges from 3,000 to 4,200 vibrations per minute (50 to 70 hertz); and the maximum nominal amplitude is 0.031 in. (.08 cm). The machine has an operating weight of 27,670 lbs. (12,548 kg). The DD118HFA is powered by a turbocharged and charge air-cooled Cummins 148-hp (110 kw) engine. The DD138HFA has a maximum centrifugal force of 41,720 lbs. (186 kN) in its highest frequency setting. Vibration frequency ranges from 2,700 to 4,000 vibrations per minute (45 to 66.7 hertz); and the maximum nominal amplitude is 0.035 in. (.08 cm). The machine has an operating weight of 30,325 lbs. (13,752 kg). A Cummins turbocharged and charge air-cooled 173-hp (129 kw) engine provides the compactor’s power. It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the output of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixes with ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of the mat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlays and profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

Calif. Contractors Tackle Roadway Washout on SR 330 REPAIRS from page 1

Creek. The hole goes completely under both lanes of SR-330 in that location. Besides the roadway washout, landslides or culvert failures occurred in five different areas along SR-330. “The culverts have been there a long time and they’re old,” said Raymond Wolfe, director of Caltrans District 8, adding many of the damaged culverts aren’t on the surface — rather they’re 80 ft. (24 m) underground. Following initial clearing of debris from the roadway and inspection of the damage by Caltrans, An emergency repair project to restore the highway has been under way. In early January, Caltrans awarded Skanska a $6 million contract for Phase I of the emergency repair work. As part of this phase, Skanska worked around the clock to excavate the downward lane and rebuild the cavern carved under the roadbed —caused by the washout — and repair culverts at other locations in the lower section of the damaged highway. “The work in Phase I also prepared the roadway to allow access for equipment to begin work at the major slide,” said Darin Cooke, public information officer of Caltrans District 8, adding this was accomplished by using material from the upbound lane to backfill the hole. During Phase I, Skanska utilized a variety of standard roadway construction equipment including Caterpillar hydraulic excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, scrapers, trucks, backhoes and light towers. In late January, Skanska was awarded a contract for Phase II work, which is the primary portion of the emergency repair efforts. Phase II focuses on repairing the damage above the major roadway washout. The phase will pioneer a road down to the City Creek streambed where Skanska will begin constructing a rock bolt wall — effectively carving a new alignment against the mountainside to create access for equipment to cross the large slide, according to Cooke. Phase II is estimated at $10 million to $12 million depending on mitigation requirements for the yellow legged frog,

which could cost up to $1.5 million. The slide occurred in the habitat of the frogs, which are a federally listed endangered species. As part of the long-range project to repair the roadway washout location, Caltrans will use dirt that roared down into the creek when the area collapsed. Caltrans will not be importing any dirt for the reconstruction project, as the transportation agency does not want to introduce any (non-native) plants or vegetation into the area. The location of the complete roadway washout is part of the San Bernardino National Forest and is overseen by the U.S. Forest Service. Phase III of the emergency repair project has yet to be awarded and will consist of culvert/slide repair, and com-

plete restoration of the roadway where the washout occurred. At this time, Phase III is in the planning and approval process. SR-330 will likely be closed for all of 2011. CEG

Contractors will set a new culvert and backfill using slurry and material from the upbound lane to fill the hole.

The ground beneath the roadway washout location may not be finished sliding, as several cracks in the asphalt indicate the ground underneath the large slide is unstable.

A Caterpillar scraper and hydraulic excavator work along SR-330.

The road washout — caused by a severe storm on Dec. 20, 2010 — will close SR-330 for a year.

A Caterpillar hydraulic excavator moves dirt from a roadway turnoff near the large washout site.

Mining New Members. Everyone knows word-of-mouth advertising from satisfied customers brings more business to your company. As an IAAP member, you have experienced valuable benefits from membership in this Association and along the way maybe you have talked with others in the industry about joining the IAAP. Your efforts are now being rewarded through a new member recruitment program called “Mining New Members.” For more information, please contact IAAP Outreach Manager Shawn McKinney at (217) 241-1639 or shawn@hansoninfosys.com. DONATION - HELP Support IAAP’s Political Activities – The IAAP Political Action Committee (PAC) was created in order to provide financial support for our allies in the Illinois General Assembly. Whether from Chicago or Downstate Illinois, Democrat or Republican, these legislators all have one thing in common – they support bills that help the Illinois aggregates industry and oppose bills that hurt our interests. As the cost of political campaigns continues to rise, we want to ensure that legislators who support this industry can compete and continue to do good work. For that reason, supporting the IAAP PAC is critically important to the future of our industry, your company, and your Association’s political activities. Please consider sending a donation, payable to the IAAP, to: John Henriksen, Secretary/Treasurer, IAAP PAC, 1115 S. 2nd Street, Springfield, Illinois 62704. The time devoted by these individuals and the knowledge they share with the industry in very important to the success of the AGC. INFORMATION - MSHA Enforcement Alert from an IAAP Member. An IAAP company has posted a new MSHA citation on the MSHA Enforcement Alerts website at www.mshaenforcementalerts.com maintained in partnership by the IAAP and other Midwest Aggregate Associations. This citation concerned the company because the inspector believed miners were stepping over the motor, but just as in a lot of other cases, this practice was acceptable during previous inspections by this same inspector and also during a CAV that was completed on these screens just 2 1/2 years ago. This motor configuration is present on many screens by different manufacturers. To view further details on this citation you may log on to http://mshaenforcement a l e r t s . c o m / c i t a t i o n s . p h p ?id=144. Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP) Illinois Teachers Workshop: Teachers from your community should register. The IAAP’s Public Information and Education Committee will hold its 15th annual Illinois Teachers Workshop: Rocks, Minerals & Mining in Today’s Society at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois on July 18 to 20, 2011. This workshop is proving to be very popular. Teachers have begun registering and we are now 1/3 of the way to our capacity of 35 teachers. The goal of this workshop is to inform teachers in grades K-12 about the importance of rocks, minerals, and mining in everyday life. Questions? Please call, Shawn McKinney, Outreach Manager, IAAP, 1115 S. 2nd Street, Springfield, IL at 217-241-1639. Winter Clothing Drive for the CCC. The AGC is holding a clothing drive for Construction Careers Center (CCC) students. Donations of coats, hats, gloves and scarves for students of the CCC are needed at this time. The students ride Metro to school and have to wait in the frigid temperatures for the bus to arrive. It would be greatly appreciated if you could make a donation of gloves, scarves and hats or a monetary contribution. Checks can be made out to the Construction Careers Center (please note in the memo line, “hats, coats, and gloves donation”). We will collect all items at the AGC office (6330 Knox Industrial Drive, St. Louis, MO) until the end of the year. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Valentine at 314-781-2356, extension 103 or at nvalentine @agcstl.org. Successful 2010 Build St. Louis Expo. The Build St. Louis Expo was a great success! The aisles were full of representatives from all facets of the industry. All of the booths were sold, so attendees had some great new specialty contractors to meet and view new products on the market by the suppliers. The expo gave another meaning to the words “social networking” and actually shaking hands. Our appreciation to our industry participants – St. Louis Council or Construction Consumers, AIA St. Louis, St. Louis Minority Business Council and Contractors Assistance Program who helped promote the event to their members.

FAE USA Adds Dave Armour as UTAH Territory Manager Dave Armour has been named Utah territory manager of FAE USA Inc. Armour, who previously sold farm and light industrial equipment in western Colorado, became a manufacturer’s representative in 2010. “I feel with my background as a dealer principal I have a very good understanding of the trials and tribulations of the dealers and can better serve them because of that,” Armour said. Giorgio Carera, CEO of FAE, is looking forward to working with Armour. “We are all excited to be working with him as he is a great professional that will bring a lot of experience and knowledge to FAE,” Carera said. For more than 35 years, Jack Lyon has led Alex Lyon & Son Inc. to the position of being among the leading construction equipment auction houses in the world.

JCB takes advantage of the large number of contractors from across the world gathered at the Alex Lyon & Son sale to display its latest models of earthmoving equipment.

Alex Lyon & Son Kicks Off Annual Florida Auctions

A

lex Lyon & Son kicked off the annual Florida Auctions in Kissimmee, Fla.

Excavators attracted a large number of bidders from across the world. Both excavators and articulated trucks brought good numbers, signaling some improvement in the construction equipment market.

Two industry legends — John LaCamera (L), founder of Contractors Equipment Guide, and Jim Davis, president of Davis Auctions. LaCamera and Davis try to keep a stiff upper lip despite the fact that the Patriots did not play in the Super Bowl.

Alex Lyon’s sale ran from Jan. 29 to Feb. 6. Quite possibly its largest equipment auction ever, Alex Lyon featured earthmoving equipment, aerial lifts, forklifts, dump trucks, truck trailers, trailers, support equipment and attachments. The equipment was gathered from the best authorized dealer rental fleets across the country, including Neff, RSC, Genie, JCB, JLG, Sunbelt, Hertz and Caterpillar. The bidding at this year’s Florida auctions was brisk. The combined effects of low dealer inventories, reduced manufacturing levels, increased demand domestically and overseas has made the market for late-hour used construction equipment in the United States very strong.

Wheeling and dealing via cell phone is Dean Adsit of Nortrax Used Equipment Sales.

Steve Debaun, Track II Corp., keeps track of what the excavators were going for at the annual Alex Lyon & Son sale.

This John Deere 650J dozer got the attention of Todd Summers of Summers Enterprise.
