The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), Clark County and the city of Las Vegas, is improving U.S. 95 from Washington Avenue to Kyle Canyon Road in northwestern Las Vegas.

The U.S. 95 Northwest Corridor Improvements Project will add lanes on U.S. 95, construct Horse Drive and Kyle Canyon Road interchanges, and a system-to-system interchange between U.S. 95 and CC 215. The project also will add auxiliary lanes, as well as ramp metering, a park-and-ride facility and landscape and aesthetic improvements. OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) The Washington state Senate has passed a bill to prevent a possible work stoppage on the 520 floating bridge project over environmental concerns. The measure, HB 2814, passed the House and goes now to the governor. It would grant the project an exemption from the state’s Shoreline Management Act, which requires a work stoppage until lawsuits contesting environmental permitting are resolved. Supporters say the bill would ensure that 900 construction jobs and $165 million in state money would not be lost. Opponents counter that it’s unfair for a Seattle project to get special treatment. The bill also would require that a funding source — likely from Interstate 90 tolling — be in place before work begins on construction connecting the new 520 bridge to the western landing near the University of Washington.

With fuel prices once again on the rise, there is a noticeable disparity in cost from one region to the next, leaving many consumers wondering why. Several factors affect the price of gas everywhere, including demand, supply and supply disruptions, which, in turn, can be affected by events such as hurricanes and politics, distance from the supply source, competition and federal emissions standards — or even higher envi-

ronmental standards in some regions, which require specific refining, distribution and storage, all of which add to the cost. Environmental programs often require reformulated gasoline that contains additives to reduce pollutants. Approximately one-third of the gasoline sold in the United States is reformulated. This creates “gasoline market islands,” according to John Cook, director of the petroleum division of the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration. Because the clean-burning requirements in these islands are unique, few refineries can sup-

ply them, leading to the possibility of higher prices in certain markets, due to demand or the potential for supply interruptions. Atlas Copco opened the doors to its 14th U.S. store, marked by a grand opening and ribbon-cutting event Feb. 23 in Phoenix. The celebration was attended by about 100 customers who benefited from presentations on equipment features. Atlas Copco chose this location to support the region’s large customer base in drilling, blasting and paving. Salesman Greg Ayers said customers have been impressed with the 9,050-sq.-ft. facility, which is situated on a spacious 2.5-acre lot and features three pull-through bays. “They are happy to have another supplier for equipment and services locally. We are excited to establish new working relationships and build and develop existing relationships.” Manager Ed Greer heads up the Atlas Copco team at the store, including Rental and Service Coordinator Jerry Delrae, Project Manager Tim Fagan, and Customer Service and Parts Manager David Arroyo. “Phoenix is a center where the bulk

Funding for the corridor is mix of federal money, state, county and city funds. Phase 1 runs from Washington Avenue to Ann Road. Capriati Construction of Henderson, Nev., began work on the $68 million project in August 2010, and the majority will be complete by late summer 2012. This is an NDOT/city of Las Vegas partnership project. This phase includes widening U.S. 95 to include auxiliary lanes in each direction from Washington Avenue to Ann Road, and widening the Gowan Road Bridge. Interchange improvements, consisting of new entrance/exit ramps, are being made at Cheyenne Avenue, the Rancho/Ann Rd. interchange and Durango Drive. Finally, crews are constructing landscape and sound walls, and making general aesthetic improvements. According to Capriati, crews will be excavating 177,890 cu. yds. (136,086 cu m) of roadway, and 109,525 cu. yds. (83,786.6 cu m) for structures. They will then place 331,590 tons (300,752 t) of aggregate base and 204,060 tons (185,082.4 t) of plant mix surface. Phase 2 will cover I-95 from Ann Road to Kyle Canyon Road. The final design began in spring 2010, with construction projected to start in 2028 or earlier, depending on funding availability and increased development demand. This phase will focus on widening U.S. 95 to three general purpose lanes and auxiliary lanes in each direction. Later this year, Phase 3 will begin. This project involves the U.S. 95/CC 215 Northern Beltway interchange and is a collaboration of NDOT, Clark County and the city of Las Vegas. The plan is to construct new ramps to complete a system-to-system interchange configuration at the U.S. 95/CC 215 Northern Beltway interchange. Phase 4 was actually the first project in the series to be completed. A new service interchange was constructed on U.S. 95 at Horse Drive and opened for use in June 2011. Another new service interchange will be built on U.S. 95 at Kyle Canyon Road in Phase 5, projected to begin construction in 2018. Drivers on the northbound and southbound U.S. 95 will view metalwork of Mojave Desert plants on both the bridges and walls. The images are accentuated by a curving color band and then reinforced with curving dry-stacked stone walls seen in the interchange areas. The Washington Avenue Bridge and walls, for example, will show metal graphics that transition the images between the Spaghetti Bowl and Rainbow Curve to the images and colors that define this corridor at the Ann Road intersection. The goals of the entire U.S. 95 Corridor project are to decrease congestion, shorten commute times and improve freeway operations. With this being both a residential and commercial area, NDOT aims to accommodate projected local traffic and improve access to areas planned for development. Atlas Copco Offers Compacting Versatility Atlas Copco Construction Equipment is introducing six new hydraulic compactors designed for use on carriers in the 2,205to 88,185-lb. (1,000 to 40,000 kg) class. A key design feature is that the housing attachment is offset at 15 degrees, improving the force distribution on the vibrator plate while further reducing the stress and wear on the compactor, according to the manufacturer. Kenworth Offers Advice on Spec’ing for Natural Gas Power Ready to seriously explore the purchase of natural gas trucks for your operation? So, where do you begin in the effort to specify for natural gas power? “Start with two primary considerations when spec’ing natural gas-powered trucks — first, the type of natural gas available in your operating area, and second, the operating range your trucks typically travel,” recommended Andy Douglas, Kenworth Truck Company’s national sales manager of specialty markets, who leads Kenworth’s green truck initiatives. For the past five years, Douglas has traveled extensively to work closely with officials from fleets, non-profit organizations, municipalities, ports and government agencies interested in purchasing fuel-efficient, low-emission trucks or helping to aid the advancement of green trucks into the marketplace. For his efforts on Kenworth’s behalf, Douglas was named one of just 40 Sustainability All-Stars by Green Fleet magazine recently. Kenworth Natural Gas Trucks “Kenworth offers an excellent choice of natural gas trucks to meet the specific application needs of truck fleets and operators,” Douglas said. Kenworth offers four natural gas models. The Class 8 Kenworth T800 — which is available only for liquefied natural gas (LNG) use — can be ordered in a gross combination weight (GCW) of up to 80,000 lb. (36,287 kg) for over-the-road operation with additional ratings exceeding 100,000 lbs. (45,359 kg) available for certain applications. The Kenworth T440, T470 and W900S are available to run either LNG or compressed natural gas (CNG). These three models can be ordered with ratings up to 66,000 lbs. (29,937 kg) GCW. The T440 and T470 also can be spec’d as a heavy Class 7 at 33,000-lb. (14,968 kg) (GCW) Class 7 truck. Models with the versatility to span Class 7 and Class 8 ratings can offer operators the widest array of truck choices to help meet their operational needs, Douglas noted.

Kenworth offers four natural gas models — the T440, T470 and W900S.

Natural Gas Availability and Expanding Infrastructure Before choosing CNG or LNG, it is important for fleets and operators to take inventory of natural gas stations in their area and along their operating routes. “Currently, many local transit and government agencies use CNG to power trucks and buses, so that fuel source may be easier to find,” Douglas said. “Meanwhile, the natural gas infrastructure available to the public is expanding at an accelerated rate across the United States and Canada along well-traveled transportation routes.” For example, natural gas engine manufacturer Westport Innovations in Vancouver, B.C., and Shell have agreed to launch a comarketing program in North America aimed at providing customers with a better economic case for adopting natural gas-powered vehicles by addressing fuel supply and customer support. Chesapeake Energy announced this past

summer that it will invest $150 million in Clean Energy Fuels Corp. over the next three years to help underwrite approximately 150 LNG publicly accessible fueling stations for heavy duty trucks along major interstate highway corridors. “It’s amazing the amount of infrastructure activity that’s happened in the past five years,” Douglas said. “It may not be too long before we’ll see enough natural gas stations along key interstate corridors for trucks to be able to travel from Los Angeles to New York and back.” Operating Range Besides natural gas fuel availability on your route, take into account operating range. “In general, if your operating range is over 400 miles, it’s usually best to go with LNG. Under 400 miles, CNG can be an option. CNG can be used up to 66,000 pounds GVW with some severe duty applications

going up to 80,000 pounds GVW,” said Douglas. Fueling In addition to available fuel type, be sure to check each station’s ease of truck accessibility, and capability to fill commercial truck volumes. Most CNG stations compress the gas into on-site storage cylinders, which can then dispense the natural gas fuel into truck fuel tanks as quickly as diesel fuel. LNG can be dispensed at 20 to 40 gal. (76 to 151 Lpm) per minute, so fueling a truck with 120-gal. (454 L) tank capacity may typically take less than five minutes. “Drivers can refuel CNG-powered trucks without needing to go through special training,” said Douglas. “LNG is a cyrogenic fuel and so those vehicles must be refueled by properly trained individuals.” Some CNG stations are lower volume, or time fill, and fill fuel tanks more slowly. slower, time-fill system is often used to fuel fleets whose vehicles sit overnight or for several hours, he said. Fuel Tank Selection and Placement As far as fuel tank selection, there is sometimes a tendency to overspec when choosing natural gas tanks since operators are in the habit of carrying a two-to-three day supply of fuel on their diesel trucks. “In many cases, it’s often impractical to carry much more than a day’s supply of natural gas. Natural gas fuel tanks also can be expensive, so consider carrying only enough fuel for a full-day’s work, plus a 10 percent reserve,” said Douglas. Douglas recommended specifying Type 4 CNG cylinders, which are the lightest weight, but also the most expensive option. Type 4 tanks have a plastic core and are fully wrapped with a composite, such as carbon fiber. Other less expensive options are Type 2 and Type 3 CNG tanks, which have a steel or aluminum core and are composite wrapped. All CNG tanks are high-pressure vessels. For its LNG-powered T800s, Kenworth uses a Dewar flask (or cyrogenic tank) system that is like a large Thermos bottle inside a metal cylinder. The LNG fuel tank, which is designed to keep the fuel in its liquid state at minus 260 F (minus 162 C), can hold between 56 and 80 diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) gallons per tank. Kenworth offers a number of tank options for order on its natural gas trucks. Fuel tank placement depends on the type of truck, chassis configuration, equipment specification choices and how much fuel is needed to be carried, Douglas said. “It’s important to carefully consider the possible impact of tank placement choices on wheelbase length, weight distribution and turning radius,” he said. Engine Recommendation — Westport HD Douglas also offered engine recommendations for spec’ing natural gas trucks. “If you choose LNG, the 15-liter Westport HD engine is a good choice for Class 8 applications, including regional haul, line haul, port and drayage with loads requiring more power and torque. That engine can be specified on the Kenworth T800,” he said. Kenworth was the first truck manufacturer to offer an LNG fuel system as a Class 8 factory-installed option several years ago, and more than 500 Kenworth T800 LNG trucks are in operation. The Westport HD engine uses approximately 95 percent liquefied natural gas, and 5 percent diesel as the pilot ignition, thus

requiring the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). For the T800, the HD engine is available in power ratings from 400 to 475 hp (298 to 354 kW) and torque ratings from 1,450 to 1,750 lb.-ft., and uses high-pressure direct injection technology to achieve that horsepower and torque. For a regional or line haul operation, Douglas recommends an LNG truck with two tanks. “If you specify, say a 120-gallon and a 70-gallon tank, that configuration provides about 100 DGE for an operating range in the neighborhood of 500 miles — without severely impacting wheelbase,” he said. Engine Recommendation — Cummins Westport ISL G If your route is less than 400 mi. (644 km), Douglas suggests considering the CNG route with the 8.9-L Cummins Westport ISL G natural gas engine. The engine uses a maintenance-free, three-way catalyst and is 2010 EPA- and CARB-compliant without the use of SCR / DEF system. “The three-way catalyst offers customers less weight and complexity and can result in lower running costs,” noted Douglas. The ISL G is rated at 320 hp (239 kW) and 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque for the Kenworth T440 and Kenworth W900S for local and vocational applications, and has a torque curve closely matching that of its diesel counterparts. The ISL G is spark-ignited and can operate on either LNG or CNG. Combined with the use of an automatic transmission, which improves throttle response and torque management, superior pulling power is provided to get the job done. The ISL G is recommended for tractors with a GVW of 66,000 lbs. or less. In addition, for vocational straight truck applications such as mixers, a GVW of up to 80,000 lbs. is available. For CNG, Douglas recommends specifying either two saddle tanks or four vertical back-of-cab headache tanks. “That gets you about 76 to 81 DGE, which equates to up to 400 miles travel with CNG,” said Douglas. “Vocational applications, such as a mixer, would also be better served with the choice of CNG because of the more local nature of the application. The ISL G also can be set up to run LNG, if you decide to go that route.” For LNG, customers can consider a single 63 to 80 DGE tank or dual tanks for greater range. The ISL G also is 5.5 decibels quieter than comparable diesel-powered 2007 Cummins engines at peak torque and load and nearly 10 decibels quieter at idle, according to Cummins Westport. The company reports it has produced 10,000 ISL G natural gas engines, mostly for the school bus and com-

muter bus markets, since the engine’s launch in 2007. Diesel vs. Natural Gas Prices According to recent figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average cost of diesel in the United States reached $4 in November. That’s up just over 25 percent from the same period a year ago. “The price of natural gas over the past three years has been consistently lower than diesel, in some cases by as much as $2 per diesel gallon equivalent,” said Douglas. “It’s no wonder why natural gas has drawn increasing interest among truck and fleet operators,” Douglas said. “The fuel savings, coupled with the longer trade cycles that some vocational operators already experience with their trucks, can make a positive return on investment [ROI] attainable now, even without government incentives,” he said. “The business is changing as the trend moves toward greener trucks.” To help determine if that savings can provide a high enough ROI, Douglas said the Clean Cities Alternative Fuel Price Report offers a comparison of CNG, gasoline, diesel and biodiesel fuels on a straight price comparison basis and an energy-equivalent basis.

The report is updated every three months. Other Benefits “Natural gas is also a cleaner burning fuel, which provides an environmental benefit through lower greenhouse gas emissions. Since it can be produced domestically, natural gas also has the potential to significantly reduce dependence on foreign oil,” Douglas added. A number of federal, provincial, county and municipal grant programs and financial incentives are available to help truck operators purchase natural gas vehicles. “Kenworth and Kenworth dealers can assist truck operators interested in pursuing such funding. Kenworth requires its dealers to make certain that service technicians are properly trained to work on natural gas trucks, prior to selling these trucks to customers. Kenworth dealers can also assist customers in helping to spec natural gas trucks,” said Douglas. “Natural gas represents a tremendous future for our industry. Knowing how to choose the right model, fuel, tanks, and engine is important for truck fleets and operators looking at adding natural gas units to their operation,” Douglas concluded.

Volvo Rents Acquires Max Equipment Rentals in Calif. Volvo Rents acquired Max Equipment Rentals, a two-location construction equipment rental company with stores in Oceanside and Perris, Calif. The move comes two months after Volvo Rents’ acquisition of another southern California-based company, SoCal Rental Equip Rent, and brings the company’s statewide presence to a total of seven rental centers. It also comes on the heels of a forecast by economists at IHS Global Insight that said California will lead the pack in a nationwide construction recovery through 2016. According to IHS stats, California will have the most construction dollars spent ($723 billion); will have the largest gain in yearly spending dollars ($76.40 billion); and have the third highest annual average percentage gain (15.6 percent). “California’s economy is growing again, and will see strong economic growth over the near- and long-term, translating into greater construction activity,” said Mike Crouch, vice president of business development of Volvo Rents. “The acquisition of Max Equipment Rentals is a strategic move that will strengthen our presence in California and puts us in a favorable position to meet what will undoubtedly translate into a growing demand for construction equip-

ment rental.” In addition to Volvo Rents’ expanding line of Volvo compact equipment — such as backhoe and skid steer loaders, compact wheel loaders, compact excavators and compaction equipment — the rental centers carry a comprehensive line of essential equipment and tools for the construction, commercial, industrial and homeowner markets. Bobcat Adds Extendable Arm Option to Its M-Series E55

The Gehl RS5-19 is designed with a compact frame and tight turning radius of 11 ft. (3.35 m), allowing it to maneuver in low buildings and confined job sites.

Gehl’s RS5-19 Sports New Interim Tier IV Engine Gehl’s RS5-19 telescopic handler has had an engine upgrade. The EPA certified Interim Tier IV Yanmar 68 hp (50.7 kW) naturally-aspirated engine provides the power needed for demanding job sites, while providing reduced fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer. The upgraded Interim Tier IV engine meets the latest emissions standards. The Gehl RS5-19 is designed with a compact frame and tight turning radius of 11 ft. (3.35 m), allowing it to maneuver in low buildings and confined job sites. The RS5-19 is a low-profile machine with an overall height of 6 ft. 4 in. (1.93 m), for operating in buildings, under parking garages and in confined areas. The boom reaches to a height of 19 ft. 1 in. (5.8 m) and features the same welded box-section design that is on the Gehl Dynalift telescopic handlers. The RS5-19 telescopic handler was designed to meet the growing needs of contractors, builders and rental firms for a 5,500 lb. (2,495 kg) lift capacity machine. All the features and benefits of the Gehl RS Series and DL Series telescopic handlers are incorporated in the RS5-19 telescopic handler. Internal wet disc service brakes are standard equipment, for better stopping capability and longer life, along with a SAHR (spring-applied, hydraulic-release) parking brake, which is automatically applied when the engine is shut off, or manually engaged by pressing a rocker switch. This design eliminates the cable stretch and adjustments associated with many other telescopic han-

dlers. The view from the ROPS/FOPS canopy is a full 360 degrees. An enclosed cab is optional with front and top windows, a door and a heater/defroster for use in areas where operators need protection from the weather. Optional air-conditioning also is available for further climate control. Two direct mechanical joystick controls for boom and fork tilt functions are standard. They are easy to reach and smooth to operate, optimizing operator precision and productivity. A deluxe suspension seat is optional. A work light package can be added to further increase the productivity of this machine. Engine accessibility is made simple with a large, hinged hood on the side of the machine. The hood lifts fully out of the way, allowing plenty of room to access maintenance points, including the battery and oil fill. Underneath the unit Gehl has added a bolted belly pan to protect all engine and hydraulic components. A hinged access door provides easy access to the engine oil drain. Hydraulic flow is up to 22 gpm (83 Lpm). Optional auxiliary lines are available to power a variety of available attachments, including, truss booms, jib booms, buckets and multiple types of carriages and forks. The Dynattach quick-attach system allows quick attachment changes. The hydraulic hoses are routed inside the boom protecting them from job site hazards. Bobcat has a new extendable arm option for the M-Series E55 compact excavator. The extendable arm is a telescoping arm that provides the best of both worlds — power and reach. The new extendable arm option provides an additional 30 in. (76 cm) of reach, when fully extended. The new option also is the first extendable arm for compact excavators in this size class that allows the use of the hydraulic clamp and Hydraulic X-Change attachment mounting system. Ultimate Performance The new Bobcat extendable arm gives ultimate reach when needed, without having to upsize the machine. The arm can be hydraulically extended and retracted as the need arises. When retracted, the arm delivers similar arm force (tear-out force) as a standard arm. Should the operator need to reach back into the trench to clean out material, or needs to reach farther away from the excavation to dump spoil, the arm can be extended an additional 30 in. Another appealing application for the extendable arm is truck loading. The extendable arm allows the operator to reach to the front or to the far side of a truck to effectively fill the load. Clamp Capability The new extendable arm option also allows for the use of a hydraulic clamp. The clamp capability is a solution for contractors wanting to pick up and place material such as rocks, landscaping materials and debris in site preparation applications, according to the manufacturer.

Fingertip Operation The extendable arm cylinder is operated through a rocker style thumb switch located on the joystick. This allows for fast and simple movements for extending and retracting the arm. Less Repositioning Required The extendable arm’s benefits are appealing to those in utility, municipalities and site preparation because it offers the compactness of a standard arm machine with the ability to extend when needed. Working in tight spaces and on concrete and established turf is possible without repositioning the machine. This equals valuable time saved and less re-work required. In the case of digging utility trenches, the extendable arm ensures a long enough reach to move spoil away from the trench and out of the way, as well as reducing the risk of the trench falling back into itself because of the weight of the nearby spoil. At full extension, the overall length of the arm also simplifies the task of creating flat-bottom trenches for water and sewer utility installations. Attachment Versatility The extendable arm maintains the versatility of operating attachments. A retention pin holds the arm in the retracted position, allowing use of up to 16 different attachments.
