Ryan Fetzer, president of Midwest Rockfall, feels like he aged 10 years in a month — courtesy of what was supposed to be a fairly typical, small-scale project. Midwest Rockfall was awarded an $800,000 rockfall mitigation project on Colorado’s Interstate 70, between Empire Junction and Georgetown. The scope of the project initially

included installing five different fences, plus some slope netting, to prevent rocks from rolling down a particular chute of Georgetown Hill and landing on the highway. It was projected to be an eight- or nine-person job and was scheduled to last about four months. Rockfall mitigation projects are common in the area. Since 2006, the Colorado Department of Transportation has spent between $8 and $9 million on Georgetown Hill mitigation proj-

STOCKHOLM (AP) Swedish truck maker AB Volvo saw profits more than double in the first quarter as demand for heavy vehicles improved worldwide, the company said April 27. The maker of Volvo, Mack, Renault and UD

trucks raised its outlook for its biggest markets — Europe and North America — where its truck sales were up by 33 percent in the first three months of 2011. Chief executive Leif Johansson said higher volumes and improved productivity helped lift profits.

United States Steel Corp. believes business will improve in the second quarter, as the recovering global economy sparks more demand for steel. The nation’s largest steelmaker forecast higher prices and stabilizing raw materials costs in the second quarter. The company said customer order rates have moderated recently, but it remained cautiously optimistic. It’s similar to outlooks from Nucor Corp. and AK Steel Holding Corp., which also expect better second-quarter results. The industry has seen some market weakness, particularly in construction, and expects some impact from auto production cutbacks following Japan’s earthquake and tsunami in March. “I think the one thing that all these companies are talking about are higher raw material and input costs, and those things seem to be front-page concerns,” Argus Research analyst Bill Selesky said. U.S. Steel Corp. said its first-quarter loss narrowed sharply as it sold more steel at higher prices, although it paid more for raw materials such as coal and scrap steel. It lost $86 million, or 60 cents per share, in the first three months of the year. That compared with a loss of $157 million, or $1.10 per share, in the same part of last year. The most recent results reflected an $81 million one-time gain on foreign currency exchanges. Sales increased 25 percent from the year-ago quarter to $4.86 billion. The results missed analysts’ estimates see STEEL page 32

U.S. to Announce Program to Repair Aging Pipelines ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) Federal transportation officials are launching a program to repair and replace aging oil and gas pipelines across the nation to prevent potential catastrophic explosions such as the recent deadly blasts in eastern Pennsylvania and California. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the initiative on April 4 in Allentown, where the Feb. 9 pipeline explosion leveled homes and businesses and killed five people, including an elderly couple and a 4-month-old boy. Last September, a 44-year-old gas transmission line ruptured in San Bruno, Calif., killing eight people, injuring dozens and leaving 55 homes uninhabitable. Investigators said the pipe had numerous flawed welds. And in Philadelphia in January, a gas main explosion sent a 50-foot fireball into the sky, killing a utility worker, injuring six people and forcing dozens from their homes. “People deserve to know that they can turn on the lights, the heat, or the stove without endangering their families and neighbors,” LaHood said in a statement. The government is calling on pipeline owners and operators to identify areas of high risk and accelerate critical repair and replacement work. The department plans new regulations to strengthen reporting and inspection requirements and making information about pipelines and the safety records of operators easily accessible to the public. LaHood said he also plans to seek legislation to increase oversight of pipeline safety, including increasing maximum civil penalties for pipeline violations from $100,000 per day to $250,000 per day and from $1 million to $2.5 million for a series of violations. Transportation officials say they plan an April 18 Pipeline Safety Forum at which state and industry officials and other parties are to discuss the problem. The number of pipeline-related accidents resulting in serious injury or death has been cut nearly in half over the last two decades, but the recent accidents “have highlighted the need to address the nation’s aging pipeline infrastructure.” Significant pipeline failures resulting in oil spills or gas explosion usually come from damage due to digging, corrosion and failure of the pipe material, welds or equipment, officials said. The latter is due to problems with valves, pumps or poor construction, they said. The Allentown utility has said that at the current pace it could take four decades to replace the rest of its aging, castiron pipelines, some of which are a century old. But UGI Vice President Robert Beard told a state Senate panel that the explosion could accelerate the utility’s efforts. The National Transportation Safety Board has said it decided not to investigate several additional pipeline accidents, including the Allentown blast and one in Philadelphia, because the current workload has strained the agency’s manpower. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said in February that the board may include the findings of state investigators in safety recommendations. Steve Klejst, who heads the safety board’s section that investigates pipeline accidents, said he has only four pipeline investigators in his office.

Kleemann Introduces EVO Series Kleemann’s EVO concept machines include the MR 110 Z EVO, MR 110 R EVO, and MR 130 R EVO and MR 130 Z EVO mobile impact crusher plants. The new EVO concept matches refinements for all individual components with a new material flow concept. The new material flow concept of the EVO models eliminates all restriction to the flow of the material throughout the entire plant, according to the manufacturer. For example, the discharge chute under the crusher is 4 in. (10 cm) wider than the inner width of the crusher, and the subsequent discharge belt is another 4 in. wider than the discharge chute. Material is thus transported quickly and carefully away from the critical area under the crusher, with flow rate increased and wear reduced. Even before the crushing takes place, there is an improvement in the material flow, due to the system widths of the feeder troughs and grizzly that facilitate flow of the material through the opening of the crusher. The independent and effective vibrating double-decker pre-screen improves the EVO models’ cost efficiency. In the EVO plants, vibration of the pre-screen and vibrating feeder below the crusher have been improved. Together with the newly designed crusher bypass — which features changes to both form and geometry — the entire system has been relieved of load and a significant contribution has been made not only to increased performance, but long-term life of the EVO models, according to the manufacturer. Optional new and improved screening units — now simpler and faster to assemble and disassemble — are available. These screening units now are significantly bigger, by more than 44 percent on the MR 110 EVO compared to its predecessor. With its

significantly increased screening area, this allows EVO models to deliver higher overall tonnages of between 350 or 450 tph (317 or 408 t) MR 110 EVO and MR 130 EVO, respectively. New Inlet Geometry The new crusher features highlights such as a new inlet geometry which allows even better penetration of the material into the range of the rotor. Also, the wear behavior of the new C-form impact ledges has been improved to such an extent that the edges remain sharper longer, leading to improved material shape. The rotor ledges are held

securely by a new clamping system, which means that they can be changed even quicker, and thus contribute to greater plant uptime. Enhanced performance is made possible in part by the direct drive with which both machines are equipped. A latest-generation diesel engine transmits its power almost loss-free directly to the flywheel of the crusher, via a robust fluid coupling and Vbelts. This drive concept enables versatility, as the rotor speed can be adjusted in four stages to suit different processing applications. Also, the newly developed and fully hydraulic adjustment capability of the crush-

ing gap permits greater plant uptime, while improving quality of end product. Not only can the crushing gap be completely adjusted via the electronic control unit, but the calculation of the zero-point is possible while the rotor is running. This ability to accurately set the crusher aprons from the control panel saves time, and improves the overall efficiency and handling of the crusher, according to the manufacturer. Further improvements include the new touch screen control unit, which allows the operator to run the crusher and diagnose faults with a user-friendly control screen. Unexpected Complications Increase I-70 Project Costs

Improving Demand Spurs U.S. Steel Corp. Optimism STEEL from page 1

age Georgetown homes. So, in addition to the standard netting used in such projects, Midwest Rockfall put in place a temporary protection system that utilized 30-yd. dumpsters stacked together “like Legos,” as Fetzer put it, to build a make-shift berm. A row of shipping containers on the far side of the interstate formed another protective barrier. The day that Midwest Rockfall crews were scheduled to move the rocks down the hill, hundreds of people gathered to watch; Georgetown schoolchildren were freed from their classes for the occasion. The Georgetown Hill portion of I-70 was closed for eight hours during rock scaling, as crews inflated special airbags that filled until the rocks broke free of the slope.

ects. With more than 40 chutes to channel rocks toward the interstate, Fetzer said that Georgetown Hill is “one of the most-looked-at hills in the country” in terms of stabilization methods. The chute that Midwest Rockfall began working on this January begins 1,500 ft. (457.2 m) above the highway; much of the work is done with helicopters. On the lower slopes, crews are using a crane purchased last year from Stevenson Crane Service of Bolingbrook, Illinois: a Manitou MRT telehandler, with a reach capacity of 67.6 ft. (20.6 m) “We also have a man basket we can put on it; we have forks for it; it will take a bucket and [we can] move a limited amount of dirt with it, though it’s not made for digging. It’s a real handy machine,” Fetzer said. Approximately two weeks into the project, things got complicated. It came to CDOT’s attention that a rock nest approximately 350 ft. (106.6 m) up Georgetown Hill could be more of a risk than initially estimated, due to the pace at which the dirt base under the boulders was eroding. So, a series of engineers re-examined the site and made recommendations. “It wasn’t like it was discovered, ‘Oh my God, this is horrible.’ It got more serious as time went on,” said Fetzer. CDOT’s Web site explained: “The boulders have a high potential of coming loose and down to I-70. for a loss of 33 cents per share on revenue of $4.89 billion, according to FactSet. “The biggest takeaway from the U.S. Steel report is that things are slowly improving on a demand basis,” Selesky said. During a conference call with analysts, Chairman and CEO John Surma said he believes demand will be firm across most markets in the second quarter; including containers, appliances, pipes and construction. He said some service and processing centers might cut back on buying steel because they are trying to moderate inventories. Those centers buy steel in large quantities and hold it in inventories until it is sold to customers. He also said the company is looking at ways to shift its energy resources, at least in part, from coal and coking coal to natural gas as a way to reduce costs and lower carbon emissions. U.S. Steel has posted consecutive quarterly losses since December 2008 as demand fell from automakers, construction companies and other customers as the recession ran its course. The company said first-quarter flat-rolled steel shipments rose three percent from the fourth quarter to four million net tons. The average price increased $63 per ton to $720 per ton. Flat-rolled steel is used in a range of products, from automobiles to appliances. Shipments of pipe products rose 10 percent from the fourth quarter to 425,000 tons but the average price fell $57 to $1,447 per ton. In Europe, U.S. Steel’s shipments rose 17 percent from the fourth quarter to 1.4 million tons due to stronger demand. The average price rose $30 per ton to $823 per ton. The company is evaluating effects on its business from the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear plant crisis in Japan that closed some factories and slowed auto production. Surma noted that some automotive customers have adjusted production schedules because of parts shortages. “We expect reductions in automotive production during the quarter to be made up in 2011 as vehicle inventories, presently low compared to historical levels, will need to be replenished,” he said in a statement.

Construction Equipment Sales on the Rise for Volvo PROFITS from page 1

The company, based in Goteborg on Sweden’s west coast, said it expected total market sales in both Europe and North America to reach 230,000 to 240,000 vehicles. That was up from an earlier estimate of 220,000 trucks in each market. “The North American truck market is driven primarily by the need to replace the increasingly older truck fleet with more modern and fuel-efficient trucks and by a positive trend in the U.S. economy and corresponding higher freight volumes,” Johansson said. Volvo also saw higher sales of construction equipment; including dump trucks, wheel loaders and excavators; while its bus sales were down by 4 percent. The company said it expects to invest $100 million over the next few years in its construction equipment manufacturing plant in Shippensburg, Pa., where it plans to make wheel loaders, excavators and articulated haulers. Johansson said production at Volvo’s Japanese subsidiary, UD Trucks, was disturbed by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. “We have a number of suppliers in Japan that are having difficulties in restarting their production, which means that we anticipate considerable disturbances to the production at UD Trucks during the second quarter,” the CEO said.

HM300-3 Powered by Komatsu Tier IV Interim Technology With a flywheel horsepower of 325 hp (242 kW), Komatsu’s HM300-3 articulated truck is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D125E-6 engine and is EPA Tier IV Interim and EU Stage 3B emission certified. The HM300-3 features a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 115,147 lb. (52,230 kg). It can haul up to a 31 ton (28.1 t) payload at its maximum ground speed of 36.4 mph (58.6 kmh). Improved operating performance, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability are additional features of the HM300-3 that provide maximum productivity and lower operating costs, according to the manufacturer. The HM300-3 is equipped with the latest Komtrax technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure Web site utilizing wireless technology. Data such as daily fuel consumption, machine utilization, operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts are relayed to the web application for analysis. The Komtrax fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency and productivity. Special features of the new HM300-3 include: • EPA Tier IV Interim and EU Stage 3B Emission Certified Engine Built upon Tier III technology, the SAA6D125-6 engine provides increased horsepower while lowering fuel consumption. The Komatsu Tier IV Interim engine uses an advanced electronic control system to manage air flow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters, and aftertreatment functions to optimize performance, reduce emissions and provide advanced diagnostic capability. Komatsu also has developed a hydraulically actuated Komatsu variable geometry turbocharger (KVGT) and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, resulting in better precision and air management as well as longer component life. The Komatsu diesel particulate filter (KDPF) has an integrated design that will not interfere with daily operation but will keep the operator aware of its status. • Improved Operation The HM300-3 features the new Komatsu traction control system (K-TCS). The K-TCS system automatically provides optimum traction when operating in soft ground conditions. As ground conditions worsen and tire slippage is detected by speed sensors located on four wheels, automatic application of the inter-axle differential lock occurs. If tire slippage continues to be detected then four independent brakes can be applied to slipping wheels to regain traction. The HM300-3 is enhanced with K-ATOMiCS—Komatsu

The HM300-3 can haul up to a 31 ton (28.1 t) payload at its maximum ground speed of 36.4 mph (58.6 kmh).

Advanced Transmission with Optimum Modulation Control System. K-ATOMiCS offers a six-speed, fully-automatic transmission that uses an advanced electronic system to eliminate shift shock and torque cutoff to improve operator and engine efficiency. It automatically selects the ideal gear based on vehicle speed, engine rpm and the shift position chosen, which results in powerful acceleration, smooth down shifting and synchronized engine speed when climbing slopes. This ultimately minimizes operator fatigue, keeps the load in the body and increases productivity. A large automatic retarder allows the operator to select the optimum operating speed on downhill travel and fully loaded hauls, eliminating acceleration generated by the grade of the slope. • Increased Payloads Through body design optimization, the HM300-3 features increased body capacity and payload. The low 9 ft. 2 in. (2.8 m) loading height easily matches with 30- to 60-ton (27 to 54 t) hydraulic excavators or 5 to 7.5 cu. yds. (3.8 to 5.7 cu m) wheel loaders. In addition, the two single-staged body lift cylinders provide a 70-degee dump angle. • Enhanced Operator Environment The new cab design provides a comfortable and quiet work environment so operators can maximize their productivity. The ROPS/FOPS Level 2 certified cab features a new rounded front dash panel with easy to reach switches. The dashboard has been redesigned and relocation of the high back, heated air ride seat with point seat belt improves operator visibility. An auxiliary input also has been added to con-

nect an MP3 player or other device along with two 12-volt ports that have also been incorporated into the cab. A new high resolution 7 in. LCD monitor features enhanced capabilities and displays information in 25 languages for global support. Using the monitor, the operator can easily modify settings for items such as the auto idle shutdown or the auto-reversing fan; check operational records, such as driving history or fuel consumption; monitor the KDPF or check how much time is required before the next maintenance interval. The monitor also offers the operator the option of using the ECO guidance function, which will provide operational tips to reduce fuel consumption. A separate high resolution back-up camera is standard with every machine and is mounted on the right hand side of the console for operator convenience. • Convenient Maintenance and Serviceability The HM300-3 provides easy service access to reduce costly downtime. The new model features a newly designed engine hood for easy access, increased cooling capacity, and a standard hydraulically driven auto-reversing fan to help keep the radiator and charge air cooler clean. The machine is equipped with the Komatsu EMMS (equipment management monitoring system), which has enhanced diagnostic features that give the operator and technicians greater monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities. EMMS also continuously monitors all critical systems, preventative maintenance, and provides troubleshooting assistance to minimize diagnosis and repair time. (2.7 to 3.6 m) Sidewinder Jr. is designed for medium duty truck applications and complements the larger 5 to 14 yd. (4.6 to 12.8 m) capacity DuraClass Sidewinder dump body. With its compact size, the Sidewinder Jr. increases maneuverability on narrow roads and in metropolitan areas, while minimizing clearance concerns, according to the manufacturer. The versatile body is easily prepared for unexpected early or late snowfalls and can be used for mid-winter construction events, such as water main breaks, without having to remove sanding equipment. The Sidewinder Jr. delivers salt/sand to the front of the truck’s tires through a conveyor system, providing added traction for traveling up and down hilly terrain. The unit’s low profile allows for safe traveling in minimum clearance areas such as under power lines, areas with low tree branches or under bridges. DuraClass designs and manufactures a wide range of premium Class 3 to 8 dump bodies, hoists and related equip- The Sidewinder Jr. delivers salt/sand to the front of the truck’s tires through a conveyor system, providing added traction for traveling up and down hilly terrain. ment.
