Largest Recycling Center Breaks Ground in Nev. By Lori Tobias CEG CORRESPONDENT

DP15001 Punches Through Hawaiian Lava Scape...8

When it came to recycling, there was a time not so long ago when southern Nevada lagged behind much of the nation. As Len Christopher, general manager of Republic Services, put it, “There was a lot of room for improvement here.” But now that is all so much old history. Crews began work in Nov. 2014 on what is slated to be the largest residential recycling facility in the nation. At 110,000 sq. ft.

(10,219 sq m), the Southern Nevada Recycling Complex will double residential recycling capacity in the area and will have the capacity to process roughly 265,000 tons (240,403 t) on an annual basis. It is set to open in fall 2015 and is expected to eventually employ 180-full-time personnel. “It is fitting that a recycling complex of this magnitude is coming to Las Vegas,” said Tim Oudman, area president of Republic Services. “Southern Nevada is home to considerable natural beauty, and this community

is deeply committed to sustainability. We are truly proud to invest in a recycling complex that will help preserve the local environment for future generations, and enable customers to meet or exceed their recycling goals.”

More Than $1.7B Set for Texas Hwy. Jobs AUSTIN, Texas (AP) More than $1.7 billion will be available for Texas highway projects because of a constitutional amendment that allows more money for roads, lawmakers said. A legislative panel decided Dec. 11 that the state Rainy Day fund’s minimum balance should be $7 billion, clearing the way for an estimated $1.74 billion of oil and gas

severance taxes for road projects, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Voters approved the constitutional amendment in November. The Texas Department of Transportation hasn’t identified specific projects that would be financed, but it issued spending guidelines that must be approved see TXDOT page 44

The Chicago-based Cambridge Construction company is in charge of building the project, and is partnering with The CP Group of San Diego, which will install the recycling equipment. see RECYCLING page 46

Industry Jobs Expand In 224 Metro Areas Construction employment expanded in 224 “It is good news that metro areas, declined in 64 and was stagnant in 51 construction employment between November 2013 is now rising in and November 2014, according to a new analytwo-thirds of the nation’s sis of federal employment metro areas.” data released by the Associated General Ken Simonson Contractors of America. AGC Association officials said contractors in many parts of the country were benefitting from growing demand, yet labor shortages threaten to undermine the sector’s recovery. “It is good news that construction employment is now rising in two-thirds of the nation’s metro areas,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist of the association. “But now that the unemployment rate for construction workers has fallen to a seven-year low, it has see AGC page 48

Service, Product Support, Dedicated Staff Enable SANY’s Continued Growth By Lori Tobias CEG CORRESPONDENT

A company doesn’t get to be the fifth largest construction equipment manufacturer in the world without good reason, and at SANY Global that long list of reasons begins with good service, product support, dedicated people and a broad range of equipment at a reasonable price. Or simply put, SANY offers its customers the value, quality and customer care. And yet, SANY’s explosive growth is something of a well-kept secret. “KHL ranks the largest equipment manufacturers globally as far as revenue and volume,” said Eric Teague, senior vice president of SANY. “We were listed number five in the 2013 KHL Yellow Table for largest construction equipment manufacturers in the world and most people don’t know that. We’re large; we have the capital behind us to grow. We build a great quality product. We support it well and we’re a great option for those people that are looking for an alternative to what their current supplier is.” Headquartered in Peachtree City, Ga., SANY has traditionally bought components for its equipment from foreign manufacturers, then assembled the machines at its 400,000 sq. ft. (37,161.2 sq m) manufacturing plant in Georgia. “During the course of 2015, we are going to start trying to source more local components,” Teague said. “It’s the same vendors that we’re using from Japan and other parts of the world, but we buy the Cummins engines locally and then ship them or install them here. We can buy a Kawasaki locally instead

We’re going to start working next year to do more and more locally sourced components.” Cummins engines will remain the preferred brand when possible, but when the vendor doesn’t have the right engines to match up to the equipment, SANY will continue its partnerships with Isuzu and other OEMs, “That’s why we think our value proposition is so good because we use the same vendors that you see globally in many other brands, but we happen to offer that same quality product at a competitive cost, said Teague.” SANY also plans to introduce new equipment to the market, including graders, wheel loaders, backhoes, pile driving machinery and dozers. “The grader is something that we showed here in North America in 2011

ConExpo and its been in testing and introduced to other markets prior to now and has compared very well,” said Teague. “We benchmarked the leading competitors and took what the customer liked about those and didn’t like about those and tried to build a product that would more or less satisfy all their needs. The wheel loaders and dozers we are now just introducing to the Chinese market so we want to do some testing there and we’ll have to do some local modifications for the customer base and market demands in North America. That’s why it’s going to take 18 to 36 months to get those here. But they are on the board and coming.” With so much growth, it’s only natural that the manufacturing plant will require expansion as well. A new paint booth is expected to be up and running see SANY page 22

LPD-LD Works Well Blastcrete’s D3522 Attachment Proves With Hydraulic Outlets Economical for Hot Epoxy Grouting Atlas Copco’s LPD-LD hydraulic post driver gives contractors a lightweight and easy-to-use tool for installing fences, tent stakes and ground rods. The unit weighs just 39 lbs. (17.7 kg) and can be used to drive 3/8to 2-1/2-in. (.95 to 6.3 cm) diameter rods. The LPD-LD works well with almost any hydraulic outlet, including a power pack or skid steer that provides a hydraulic flow of 5 gal. per minute (19 Lpm). Contractors can operate the unit with the built-in trigger to easily deliver 2,300 blows per minute (bpm) for fast installations in nearly any terrain. This high-frequency driving also provides smooth operation and minimizes damage to the top of the rod or post, which can occur with machines that operate with fewer bpm. The post driver accepts standard 2-in. (5 cm) diameter rods, and it can be used with adaptors or bushing inserts to drive 3/4- to 2-1/2-in. (1.9 to 6.3 cm) rods. The front end of the unit features a built-in anvil and pin for quick and easy installation of adaptors and bushings. To minimize damage to smaller diameter ground rods, contractors can install an adaptor to provide a surface for the anvil to strike rather than the rod. The adaptor can be replaced with 1/2- to 1-in. rods or 2- to 2-1/2-in. (1.3 to 2.5 or 5 to 6.3 cm) diameter driver heads to install wood stakes, Tposts and round tubes. The D3522 attachment hot epoxy pump from Blastcrete Equipment Company can be powered by an existing hydraulic power source. It is lighter, more versatile and much more affordable than hot epoxy pumps and mixer/pump combinations with built-in power supplies, especially since skid steers and other equipment with auxiliary hydraulic hookups can power the unit, according to the manufacturer. The D3522 attachment features a hydraulic squeeze Blastcrete’s D3522 attachment can pump hot epoxy or cementitious grouts (peristaltic) pump that at variable speeds from 0 to 6 cu. yds. For example, if the pump becomes rotation generates suction from the receiving hopper plugged, the operator can easily reverse the pump for and pushes the material through the pump and out the 5 seconds to relieve pressure on the delivery hose. Blastcrete designed the D3522 attachment for easy discharge into the delivery hose. The epoxy materials do not come in contact with the moving parts of the operation. The unit has a large, well-marked control squeeze pump, unlike a rotor stator or piston-style panel with simple control levers to operate the pumppump. E-Z Drill Model 210 Provides Maximum Productivity Model 210 equipmentmounted concrete drill attachments from E-Z Drill offer specially designed features for maximum productivity and low maintenance. The pneumatic attachments are ideal for full-depth road repair and patching projects. The series consists of three models: the three-gang 210-3 EQ MT, four-gang 210-4 EQ MT and five-gang 210-5 EQ MT. All three are compatible with most models of backhoes and excavators, and are ideal for fulldepth road repair and patching projects. A user-friendly, easily accessible control panel is mounted on the drill to provide convenient operation from the ground. The units are capable of drilling 5/8- to 2-1/2-in. (1.6 to 6.3 cm) diameter holes, at a depth of 18 in. (45.7 cm). Each drill motor requires a minimum of 100 cfm (2.8 cu m) for operation, with a minimum of 300 cfm (8.4 cu m) required to power the smallest unit in the series, the three-gang Model 210-3 EQ MT. To reduce air compressor requirements, an optional 120-gal. (454 L) air tank is available. Designed for quick, precise drill positioning, the 210 EQ MT drills feature a sideshift control. In contrast to similar equipment-mounted drills, the carrier operator is not required to position the unit in the exact drilling location. The drill must simply be placed in close proximity to the specified drilling area, and then can be quickly and easily adjusted to the target location with a toggle switch found on the control panel. The side-shift feature further enhances productivity by allowing a second set of holes to be drilled without the need to move the drill, backhoe or excavator, provided holes are specified on 12-in. (30.5 cm) centers. Simply set the drill spacing at 24 in. (61 cm), drill one

set of holes, and engage the side shift. The unit will quickly and precisely move 12 in. to drill the second set, all without repositioning the drill or carrier. Drill spacing is adjustable up to 24-in., and the drills offer lateral travel up to 14 in. (35.5 cm). To reduce operator effort and increase hole-drilling speed, the drills feature a “floating” bucket curl pins. Because the pins have a small range of motion, the drills can automatically level themselves. This eliminates the tedious and time-consuming process of manually leveling and positioning them with each movement. For added convenience and productivity, the 210 EQ MT drills feature 360-degree rotation, which allows quick repositioning for drilling within the same patch. To enhance operator safety, the rotating feature includes a safety swivel lock. With the simple flip of a switch, the lock is activated and the drill is secured into place, ensuring safe transport and preventing potential harm to the operator. A number of features have been incorporated into the 210 EQ MT drills to enhance durability and extend service life. Multipoint oil injection allows each drill to be lubricated individually from a single reservoir, ensuring each drill always has the proper amount of oil. This reduces wear on the motor and is more effective than a central oiling system, which doesn’t offer individual lubrication

The units are capable of drilling 5/8- to 2-1/2-in. (1.6 to 6.3 cm) diameter holes, at a depth of 18 in. (45.7 cm). Each drill motor requires a minimum of 100 cfm (2.8 cu m) for operation, with a minimum of 300 cfm (8.4 cu m) required to power the smallest unit in the series, the three-gang Model 210-3 EQ MT.

points. An automatic drill shut-off further extends individual drill life by preventing dry firing. The 210 EQ MT drills offer extra height adjustment to provide access to the center of a slab even in extreme asphalt overlay conditions. To complete the system, E-Z Drill offers a full line of drill bits and drill steel. For more information, call 800/272-0121 or visit www.ezdrill.com. SANY Makes Customer Service Paramount With Next Day Shipping SANY from page 14

by December. And they’ve already added additional building pads so they’re ready when new space is required. “Pretty soon we are going to outgrow our warehouse space so we are going to have to build a separate building,” said Teague. “Due to the manufacturing volume capacity need for next year we’re not going to have room for it in this building. “SANY is a very aggressive company and we are intently focused on the North American market. We just had our three year strategy meeting and we’re going to roll that out for ’15, ’16 and ’17 and SANY definitely wants to establish themselves as a player in the North American market.” SANY is committed to continuing the top-notch service customers have come to expect. The company’s next day air time for shipping parts and products is greater than 95 percent because of the large stock it keeps on hand. “Most manufacturers try to arrive between that 90 and 95 percent within 24 hours and the rest will come from overseas or whatever,” said Teague. “We really focus on being able to provide as much as we can in that 24 hours so if we have to remove a part off the assembly line, we remove a part off the assembly line to keep a customer up and running. That’s one of the worst thing you want to do from a manufacturing standpoint, but it keeps your customer base satisfied.” And keeping the customers satisfied is of utmost importance at SANY. Because ultimately everything manmade can and will break and when it does SANY knows when and how you support the customer is key. “It doesn’t matter the brand; it doesn’t matter the product,” says Teague. “It could be anything from refrigerators to airplanes. If you going to have an issue, and you are going to have an issue, the customer remembers that issue, he doesn’t remember the 4,000 hours of great service he got out of the machine before. He cares about the problem he has today

Newest Cat Vocational Truck Model Enters Full Production Introduced at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2014, the CT681 is a Class 8 set-forward-axle model with a spacious and ergonomic cab, industrial styling, and a vocational-specific engine and transmission. Like the Cat CT660, the first model in the Cat vocational truck line, it’s backed by bumper-to-bumper service at more than 400 Cat dealer locations with more than 2,300 service bays in North America. Extensive testing of the CT681 with North American customers was done as part of Caterpillar’s field follow program — the equivalent of more than three years of heavy truck use. Applications included snow plow, concrete mixer, dump and super dump. “This process provides a crucial feedback loop between our customers and our vocational truck product team, identifying any required changes to design and production,” said Dave Schmitz, global on-highway truck product manager. “Customers who have tested the truck tell us it drives well, it’s powerful, it’s quiet and their drivers enjoy getting behind the wheel. Based on this feedback, we’re confident the CT681 is ready to handle whatever tough jobs our customers throw at it.” Industrial, Attachment-Ready Design With its set-forward axle, the CT681 allows customers affected by bridge law formulas in their states or on the interstate highway system to maximize loads. It’s also ideal for those who prefer a longer wheelbase truck for better ride quality on long hauls or rough haul roads. Comfortable, Productive Cab The CT681’s spacious interior helps reduce driver fatigue, enhance safety and boost productivity. The ergonomic dashboard and center stack feature easy-to-read gauges that drivers can view through the steering wheel. A tuned cab air suspension system, premium grade sound insulation, and tight fitting components and trim deliver a smooth, quiet ride. Drivers can choose from multiple seat options, including the Cat comfort seat, while a leather-wrapped steering wheel that

reverse, it’s built to complement the torque output of Cat CT Series engines. The Cat CX31 automatic transmission features a high power-to-weight ratio, full power shifting and quick acceleration to boost productivity. Ideal speed and torque combinations help improve fuel economy, and two side PTO locations and a Cat exclusive rear PTO enhance performance and serviceability. Automatic shifting is easy to learn and simple to operate, making it easier to find, train and retain productive drivers. Jobsite safety is enhanced as well, since drivers don’t need to operate the clutch or remove their hands from the wheel. Other options for the CT681 include a variety of manual transmissions and the Ultrashift Plus vocational transmission built by Eaton.

tilts and telescopes comes standard. They’ll also find plenty of room for paperwork, log books and other important items in the easyto-reach side compartments, back-panel storage and oversized side pockets. Overhead, under-dash and adjustable map lights illuminate key work areas, and easyaccess HVAC controls and vents are positioned for optimum air flow. In terms of safety, the CT681 offers an enhanced view of the road, due to a curved, sloped, wraparound windshield in a one- or two-piece design, sealed-beam halogen headlights and LED park/turn lights. Large, heated, cowl-mounted mirrors with integrated turn signals also enhance all-around visibility. A generous door opening, three-point grab irons and skid-resistant steps help ensure safe entry and exit. Performance-Matched Engine and Transmission Under the hood, the CT681 is powered by a Cat CT Series vocational truck engine with horsepower ratings from 365 to 430 and

peak torque ratings from 1,250 to 1,550 lb.ft. Designed for vocational applications, these engines deliver optimum horsepower/torque combinations and the flexibility to match power and performance to specific jobs and operating conditions. CT Series engines feature a highly efficient selective catalytic reduction (SCR) solution to meet emissions standards, with upgraded in-cylinder technology and proven aftertreatment. A compacted graphite iron block, designed for durability, reduces weight by as much as 200 lbs. (90.7 kg) compared to standard iron — allowing users to increase payloads for added efficiency and profit, according to the manufacturer. In addition, a single electronic control module and fewer electrical connections help reduce diagnostic and maintenance time, and a fluid-free head gasket eliminates the risk of coolant leaking into engine oil or exhaust gases entering the cooling system. Performance-matched with the engine is the optional Cat CX31 automatic transmission. With six forward speeds and one

Cat Connect/ LINK technologies The CT681 comes standard with Product Link, a proprietary Cat telematics system that collects data from on-board systems and transmits it via satellite and cellular networks to a secure Internet site. Using Product Link and its easy-to-use web interface, VisionLink, truck owners and fleet managers can access accurate, timely data about how, when and where trucks are being used. With information from LINK technologies, customers can make fact-based decisions to help reduce costs, enhance productivity and improve security. An optional vehicle infotainment system and Bendix tire pressure monitoring system also are available on the CT681. “We designed the CT681 based on hundreds of hours of customer input,” said George Taylor, director of Caterpillar’s global on-highway truck group. “The result is a truck that’s built to maximize payloads, work hard and last for years, even in the toughest applications, and the success of our field follow program bears that out.” For more information, visit www.drivecat.com. Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section For more information on crushing, screening and recycling equipment, visit CEG's Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.

Sandvik’s Unveils New Prisec 3 CI531, CI532 HSI Crushers Sandvik Construction has launched the CI531 primary and CI532 secondary, Prisec 3 horizontal shaft impact (HSI) crushers. These new generation crushers provide customers with a low capital cost solution, optimum performance and good cubical shape, while ensuring the lowest operating cost per ton for a wide range of materials and applications, according to the manufacturer. The latest additions to the CI500 Prisec horizontal shaft impactor range of crushers, the Prisec 3 primary CI531, and the secondary CI532, have been developed to deliver exceptional rates of productivity and efficiency. As with the rest of the Prisec range, these new HSI crushers possess the ability to be configured into either a primary or secondary crusher operating mode. Additionally single stage crushing also is a possibility with the ability to recirculate material to the primary versions of the crushers. Exceptional Reduction Ratios Sandvik’s all new design of crushing chamber ensures even greater reduction ratios than have been previously obtainable. Furthermore the Prisec 3 crushers are able to easily produce impressive reduction ratios through the use of two uniquely designed curtains, which have traditionally required a three curtain configuration crusher. As well as enhanced productivity, this means fewer wear parts and reduced maintenance. Energy Efficient Overload Protection The CI531 and CI532 Prisec 3 are equipped with an infinite hydraulic curtain adjustment combined with a brake positioning system which relieves pressure, and setting, when un-crushable objects enter the crusher. No hydraulic power is required during normal operation, thus saving on operating power and reducing total power consumption. Both first and second curtains are infinitely adjustable via the Sandvik’s adjustment / braking system, which is located on the cross beams of the crusher. This system gives hydraulic adjustment of both curtains, via the standard supply electric hydraulic power pack. Dealing With Crusher Blockages Crusher blockages have always historically been a problem, especially when operating in a primary mode. Removal of the blockage, with the combined downtime and health and safety risks encountered, are now eliminated with the new generation Prisec 3 crusher. Due to the features of the crushers no stopping of the crusher is necessary, with no operator

intervention inside the crusher, no heavy lifting gear required, all resulting in maximum uptime and reduced health and safety problems, according to the manufacturer. The CI531 and CI532 Prisec 3 are equipped with an infinite hydraulic curtain adjustment combined with a brake positioning system, which relieves pressure, and setting, when un-crushable objects enter the crusher.

Rotor and Hammer Design The rotor and hammers can be considered as the heart of the crusher; this is why those used on the Prisec 3 range are both robust and efficient. Rotors have superior weight and design, essential for delivering the high inertia required for optimum crusher performance, thus ensuring stability and smooth operation during production. The “banana” shaped self-sharpening hammer design helps to keep the contact heads sharper during operation, resulting in more effective shearing of the incoming material, and hence improved production.

Easy and Safe Maintenance A key safety interlock system ensures safe maintenance of the crusher and prevents accidental opening of the crusher and inspection doors even in multiple installations. It also allows the ability to raise curtains during operation without stopping the crusher to clear blockages, and re-set automatically to operating setting. This maximizes uptime and reduces the need for heavy lifting gear and operator / maintenance intervention, thereby reducing further health and safety risks. Maximum Uptime, Maximum Breakage Through the modularized nature of the Prisec 3 range, wear parts can be turned for maximum life/usage with the same size being used across the whole range of crushers. In addition, Sandvik’s technology in the hammer and liner material composition provides options far surpassing old industry standard of manganese, resulting in even lower operating cost per ton and the ability to operate efficiently in a variety of materials, especially recycling applications, according to the manufacturer. For more information, visit www.construction.sandvik.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Atlas Copco Bucket Crushers Quickly Pulverize Material in Tight Spaces Atlas Copco’s compact bucket crushers allow operators on construction, demolition and trenching work sites to quickly and effectively pulverize asphalt, concrete and stone, even in tight spaces. Operators can re-use the material on site or sell it. This creates a new revenue stream and reduces transportation and dumpsite expenses. The bucket crushers also eliminate the need for additional crushing equipment. The company designed the crush-

ers to provide a long service life with replaceable top and bottom jaws and single jaws that can be rotated. Atlas Copco offers four models with output diameters ranging from 0.5 to 4.75 in. (1.3 to 12 cm). For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Atlas Copco’s BC 3500 bucket crusher is one of four new bucket crushers added to Atlas Copco’s Silent Demolition Tool line.

Blasting Technology Hard at Work on Solidified Lava SANDVIK from page 8

shooting — the way the hoses are routed, the gullwing service doors, the way the components are installed. If the computer finds an error, it tells you exactly where to look.” The DP1500i also has a new air control circuit, which increases the efficiency of the compressor, a significant upgrade. As Fritzen said, “The DP1500i has plenty of air and power.” A machine’s efficiency is not divorced from an operator’s efficiency, and the DPi series has not neglected to provide a safe and comfortable work space for the operator. The operator’s pressurized and insulated cabin has an air filtration system, as well as an optimum sized air conditioning unit, so the person at the controls isn’t distracted by discomfort. Bright and clear monitoring screens, armrest-integrated joy sticks, and a nimble drilling control system provide the operator firm control of their work, with the cab’s glass front providing high visibility with a high-tensile steel grille to protect it against flying rock. “The visibility is better; the windows are

bigger and there are more of them,” said Haynes. He added that Pete Peterson, the drill operator for Blasting Technologies, “Loves the new features, the improvements made on the machines. They (Sandvik) put the fuel tank and water tank inside the carrier so the tip factor is way reduced. I know Pete likes that because he is the guy operating the machine.” The DPi series drills are quite simply a good fit with Blasting Technology, a company that is planning to expand its operations. The greater efficiency of the new models means that the company can keep its current work crew of less than a dozen people, and still take on more projects because of the 20 per cent jump in drilling productivity. The equipment yard at Blasting Technology has now been entirely Sandvik for nearly 20 years. During those two decades, the company has enjoyed the working relationship with Sandvik sales and service personnel on the U.S. mainland (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

TxDOT Expects Work to Begin by Early Summer ’15 TXDOT from page 1

by the Legislative Budget Board. TxDOT suggests that 30 percent be budgeted for congestion relief projects, primarily in urban areas. Another 30 percent could go toward “statewide connectivity’’ projects that would join rural areas to interstates and other state highways. The remaining 40 percent would be evenly split between maintenance and repair of damaged roads in the state’s oil and gas areas. TxDOT’s deputy executive director, John Barton, said he expects some of the work funded by the newly available money to

begin by early summer. All of the funding will likely be committed to projects by the end of next year, with construction following soon after. “Our goal is to have all of this money out quickly,’’ Barton said. Senate Finance Chairwoman Jane Nelson’s office said the Rainy Day fund currently has $6.7 billion, but will be at $8.44 billion after it receives half of last year’s oil and gas taxes. AEM Honors 34 Companies The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) announced the 2014 recipients of the annual Pillar of the Industry awards. Winners are member companies who have achieved Gold-Level status in the association’s I Make America pro-manufacturing advocacy campaign. I Make America promotes policies that create more jobs in the United States and keep the nation’s economy competitive with other countries. It has enlisted the support of more than 39,000 people to date nationwide. Gold-Level supporters have achieved participation benchmarks marking them as industry leaders. The awards recognize their tremendous dedication to the people and communities of the equipment manufacturing industry through activities that include outreach to elected officials, including congressional representatives, and facilitating employee participation in I Make America, informing them about the importance of promanufacturing policies. “I Make America’s success depends on strong participation from member companies and employees, and we are pleased to honor this year’s award winners; their outstanding efforts have helped us better inform elected officials about the critical importance of our industry in sustaining and improving our nation’s quality of life and economic prosperity,” said AEM President Dennis Slater. “We will continue to build momentum around major legislative hurdles still facing the equipment manufacturing industry, including passage of a long-term highway bill, opening up global markets for U.S. exports, protecting our nation’s renewable fuel standard, and developing a comprehensive energy plan to boost U.S. competitiveness.” The 2014 Pillar of the Industry award winners were announced at AEM’s recent annual conference. Caterpillar Chairman, CEO Rings NYSE Opening Bell Caterpillar Inc. Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman rang the opening bell Dec. 22 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to mark the 85th anniversary of the company’s listing on the NYSE, considered the world’s foremost securities marketplace. Of the approximately 3,200 companies listed on the NYSE, Caterpillar is among only 2 percent that have been listed for 85 years or more. “Not only are we celebrating 85 years on the NYSE this year, but next year we will also celebrate the 90th anniversary of Caterpillar as a company,” Oberhelman said. “Both milestones are a testament to the strength of our global brand, our dedication to customers and strong reputation with stockholders for financial strength and performance through the years. In 2014, the strength of our balance sheet and strong cash flow positioned Caterpillar to repurchase $4.2 billion in stock and to pay $1.6 billion in dividends. Caterpillar has paid a cash dividend every year since the company was formed in 1925 and has paid a quarterly dividend since 1933. We are proud of delivering that consistency and value over the decades.” Caterpillar also is giving Wall Street traders and New York City the opportunity

become a major challenge to find qualified workers in many fields.” Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas, added the largest number of construction jobs in the past year (16,200 jobs, 9 percent), followed by Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas (11,000 jobs, 10 percent), Chicago-JolietNaperville, Ill. (9,100 jobs, 7 percent) and Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash. (8,900 jobs, 12 percent). The largest percentage gains occurred in Pascagoula, Miss. (24 percent, 1,500 jobs), Fargo, N.D. (19 percent, 1,600 jobs), Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin, Fla. (18 percent, 700 jobs) and YorkHanover, Pa. (18 percent, 1,700 jobs). The largest job losses from November 2013 to November 2014 were in BethesdaRockville-Frederick, Md. (-3,600 jobs, -11 percent), followed by Phoenix-MesaGlendale, Ariz. (-3,000 jobs, -3 percent), Edison-New Brunswick N.J. (-2,700 jobs, -6 percent), Gary, Ind. (-2,500 jobs, -14 percent) and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla. (-2,500 jobs, -4 percent). The largest percentage decline for the past year was in Steubenville-Weirton, Ohio-W.Va. (-39 per-

cent, -900 jobs), followed by Cheyenne, Wyo. (-17 percent, -600 jobs), Fond du Lac, Wis. (-15 percent, -400 jobs) and Gary, Ind. Association officials noted that most contractors report they are having a hard time finding qualified workers to fill key positions as demand rebounds. They cautioned that if labor conditions get even tighter, contractors will have to pass on new projects, and possibly delay existing ones, because of a lack of workers. Indeed, 25 percent of contractors reported over the summer they were already declining to bid on certain projects because of the lack of available workers. “It is time to start rebuilding the once robust career and technical education programs that used to exist in most school districts around the country,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “Without a solid network for preparing future workers, we are likely to spend much of 2015 talking about how the construction industry is failing to keep up with demand.”

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) China secured a deal on Dec. 17 to construct a high-speed train link between Belgrade and Budapest that will cut travel time between the Serbian and Hungarian capitals from eight hours to less than three. The 250 mi. (400 km) railway is part of China’s ambitious plan to speed up the delivery of its exports to central Europe through Greece’s port of Piraeus. The BelgradeBudapest line is to be completed by mid2017. The project, worth $3.1 billion, is to be financed by the China Development Bank and executed by Chinese state-owned enterprises. China’s Prime Minister Li Keqiang

attended the signing of rail and customs documents by Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban. The ceremony took place at an economic summit in Belgrade between China and 16 central and eastern European states. The railway agreement “shows that China and Europe have found possibility to cooperate on mutual benefits in decades to come,’’ Orban said through a translator after the ceremony. Li called the project “a corridor between China and Europe.’’ (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
