Not every day does a visitor to an unprecedented public disaster show up to volunteer with recovery efforts and almost immediately become de facto manager of the project. But the eleventh day of September 2001 was not just any day in New York City. That day the city became the target of coordinated terrorist attacks that quickly spread to Washington, D.C. After an airliner was intentionally crashed into each of the World Trade City towers in New York City — with a third flown into the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth into the ground before it could hit another Washington target — the world in general, and America in particular, was stunned. David H. Griffin Jr. wasn’t stunned for long. Two days after the towers fell, with concrete dust still covering lower Manhattan and authorities scrambling to ward off feared additional attacks, Griffin drove with his wife and children to New York from his home in Piles of debris stood 50 ft. (15 m) high Greensboro, N.C. His mission was to help. see GRIFFIN page 38

Demands From Private Sector Boost Industry Employment Construction employment increased in 146 out of 337 metropolitan areas between August 2010 and August 2011, declined in 145 and stayed level in 46, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released Sept. 26 by the Associated General Contractors of America. when Griffin arrived at the scene.

By Jeff Richardson FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) Twenty-one ceremonial shovels were wielded at the groundbreaking for the Tanana River bridge, which said something about both the profile of the project and the anticipation behind the Sept. 28 event. After nearly a decade of planning, regulatory hurdles and funding headaches, more than 100 dignitaries and spectators arrived to formally celebrate the arrival of the $190 million bridge along a secluded stretch of the river in Salcha. “This is a great day,” Rep. Don Young said. “We’re finally going to build a bridge to somewhere.” The new bridge will span a 3,300-ft. (1,006 m) section of the Tanana River, marking the first phase of a four-phase project that planners hope will eventually bring a new rail line to Delta Junction. Planning for the project began in 2002, and federal funding for environmental studies of the site began in 2004. Funding challenges and lengthy environmental reviews kept it on hold until this year, when the state supplied $44 million needed to fully fund the project. The bridge is scheduled for completion in August 2014. That slow pace was reflected in some of the politicians, past and present, who were on hand. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski started lobbying for the bridge project during his term, which ended more than five years ago. The late Sen. Ted Stevens, who was credited by several speakers for generating early funding for the project, didn’t live to see its groundbreaking. “We all know that good things don’t come easy, but sometimes we wish they’d come a little bit easier,” said U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Once it’s completed — along with a stillunfunded 80-mi. (129 km) rail line to Delta — the bridge will give various military forces year-round access to some of the most remote training areas available in the country.

Maj. Gen. Thomas Katkus, who lobbied for bridge funding in Juneau last session, said the bridge will boost training opportunities at the Delta and Tanana Flats military ranges. Access to those training grounds currently relies on a seasonal ice bridge across the Tanana. “I see a bridge, but I also see unbelievable opportunity for the safety and security of this nation,” he said. The new bridge, however, also carries dreams that go beyond those training grounds. Sen. John Coghill said he’s heard people pondering an Alaska rail extension to the east since he was a boy growing up in Nenana. He views the bridge project as the first phase of that long-awaited transportation link. “We’ve got a long way to go before we hit Canada,” Coghill said. “We’re going to get there, as far as I’m concerned.” Those thoughts were echoed by Rep. Eric Feige, who said his “ultimate dream” is a rail project that will eventually connect Alaska with the Lower 48.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Assemblyman Tim Beck was part of an Alaska Department of Transportation team that surveyed a proposed rail route from

and even larger decreases in public sector construction investments,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist, noting that private sector spending on construction has grown by 5.5 percent since July 2010 while public sector demand declined by 8.8 percent during the same time period. “Construction employment continues to be stuck in a pattern where there are just as many hot spots as there are slow spots.” Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas, added more construction jobs (10,400 jobs, 6 percent) than any other metro area during the past year while Lake County-Kenosha County, Ill.-Wis., added the highest percentage (22 percent, 2,900 jobs). Other areas adding a large number of jobs included the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville area (7,100 jobs, 5 percent); Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, Mich. (3,800 jobs, 10 percent); Edison-New Brunswick, N.J. (3,500 jobs, 9 percent) and the Detroit -Dearborn-Livonia area (3,400 jobs, 18 percent). The largest job losses were in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale area (minus 7,000 jobs, minus 7 percent); followed by Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Ga. (minus 5,500 jobs, minus 6 percent); Las VegasParadise, Nev. (minus 4,400, minus 10 percent); Philadelphia (minus 3,800 jobs, minus

6 percent); and New York City (minus 3,400 jobs, minus 3 percent). Redding, Calif. (minus 19 percent, minus 600 jobs) lost the highest percentage. Other areas experiencing large percentage declines in construction employment included Wilmington, N.C. (minus 17 percent, minus 1,600 jobs); Montgomery, Ala. (minus 16 percent, minus 1,100 jobs) and Panama City-Lynn HavenPanama City Beach, Fla. (minus 16 percent, minus 800 jobs). Association officials said the two most important steps Washington officials could take to boost construction employment are passing long-term infrastructure bills and reconsidering many of the costly regulatory obstacles that have been put in place. They noted that even as highway and transit legislation has languished, state and local officials are being forced to spend billions of limited transportation funds on butterfly bridges and bat-safe highway lighting. “It’s like we are trying to rebuild our economy with two hands tied behind our back,” said the association’s chief executive officer Stephen E. Sandherr. “We’re penny pinching on infrastructure even as we allow entitlement spending to spiral out of control, while we are doing a lot of things to inflate the cost and delay the completion of infrastructure projects.”

Cashman Equipment Expands With Atlas Copco Air Compressors Cashman Equipment’s Power Solutions division has a new business relationship with Atlas Copco Compressors, LLC, a manufacturer of stationary air compressors. As a dealer of Atlas Copco’s stationary compressed air products, Cashman Power will provide a wide variety of solutions for sales, parts and service in Nevada and Utah, as well as rental availability only in Nevada. Cashman Equipment’s new product offerings will include both lubricated and oil-free industrial compressors of piston and rotary screw type from 1 to 1,000 hp and larger. Atlas Copco’s line of compressed air system attachments will be available including dryers, oil absorbers, filters and piping systems. These new products round out the company’s energy offerings, as Cashman Equipment will continue to offer a large fleet of portable rental compressors, as well as service technicians to assist customers when they require service.

Compressed air is a common source of power for a wide variety of tools and machinery in many industries and applications. Compressed air is often considered as vital a source of energy as electricity, natural gas, or water. Virtually any process requiring tools or actuators are operating via pneumatics (use of pressurized gas). Consistent, efficient supply, accumulation, and distribution of air reduces energy consumption and risk of downtime, according to Cashman. “Atlas Copco is the recognized quality leader in compressed air products,” said Keith Lozeau, Cashman Power Solutions’ sales and rental manager. “This addition to our current products provides us with more options to reduce our customers’ operating expense while increasing their uptime and productivity.” For more information, visit www.cashmanequipment.com.

Deere 850K Dozer Jointly Designed by Operators, Engineers After years of working side-by-side with customers to help improve job site productivity, John Deere has introduced the 850K crawler dozer with a new Interim Tier IV (IT4) engine and dual-path hydrostatics. Just one of the hundreds of Deere customers that contributed over the last few years to the company’s new dozer design was veteran crawler operator Rob Anderson. “The 850K’s design shows that Deere listened to our suggestions and ideas from the get-go,” Anderson said. “We collaborated with the engineers the whole way and they responded to our needs by making the changes we suggested in the cab, in the cooling system. Everywhere. I was extremely proud when I saw the 850K roll off the line. Deere hit a home run and I’m thrilled to have been involved.” Ideal for earthmoving contractors, road builders and site prep specialists, the 205-hp (153 kW) 850K features the productivity, control and smoothness inherent to a dual-path hydrostatic transmission while the new IT4-certified engine allows customers to meet the latest emissions regulations and bid specifications. In response to customer suggestions for noise-level reduction both inside and outside the cab, the new 850K also features viscous cab mounts that reduce noise to the operator’s ear by 45 percent. “When you sit in the machine, close the doors and start it up, you really have to pay attention,” Anderson said. “When it’s idling, you ask yourself, ‘Is it running?’ And when you put it to work at full RPMs the noise level is so low that you can carry on a conversation or listen to the radio. Vibration from the cab is nonexistent and that’s a huge improvement.” “Customers also asked for serviceability improvements to the cooling system, which led to us incorporating our V-cool package,” explained Dan Drescher, Deere’s crawler product marketing manager. “With a V-cool package fan box that folds down, core clean-out of the cooler is quick and easy from both sides. Customers will spend more time in the cab being productive and less time outside performing maintenance.” “I thought that cooling package improvements were a big, big thing for us to ask for,” said Anderson. “I wasn’t expecting to see improvements to both the radiator and the cooling package. “It’s so easy now how the grill folds out. The swing-out doors on both sides are easily removed and there are no bolts to take off. It’s great for accessibility to the grill and debris cleaning, and in terms of serviceability, this is huge.” New IT4-Certified Engine The John Deere PowerTech 6.8-L IT4 diesel provides either 187 or 205 hp (139 or 153 kW) at 1,800 rpm, depending on machine configuration, and provides better low-end performance and quicker recovery when operating in the 1,500 to 1,800-rpm range, according to the manufacturer. The new engine uses cooled EGR technology with exhaust filters, Deere’s solution to meet 2011 EPA emissions regulations. The engine’s diesel particulate filters are cleaned automatically during routine operation, which increases overall machine productivity as there is no need to idle down for maintenance. The Deere IT4 engine also offers operation on slopes up to 45 degrees while maintaining adequate oil flow to machine systems. A hydraulically driven cool-on-demand fan operates only as needed, which decreases cab and bystander noise levels

and cuts fuel consumption. Fan reverse functionality also comes standard to blow out debris.

Dual-Path Hydrostatics Deere’s dual-path hydrostatic system automatically matches machine power and speed to load demand, eliminating the need for inefficient gear systems. Full power is available to the tracks while turning with a load — there’s no loss of productivity while turning. Inside the cab, customers will find greater comfort due to larger access doors and more interior room. Ample glass and well-positioned in-cab components provide visibility to the blade. The 850K also features a sealed switch module with keyless start, a 24-volt electrical load center, a standard storage space and a grade control monitor. An air suspension seat is standard.

Blade Configurations The 850K’s new outside dozer (OSD) blade has a three hole blade pitch with screw-type fine-tune adjustment for ASV Rubber Tracks Tracks infinite settings. Sloped cross-members provide lateral strength and visibility to the rear of the blade. Its raised posiSkid Steer Tires Loader Tires tion allows for additional clearance at the end of a push. The Power-Angle-Tilt (PAT) configuration has four posi Milling Machine & Chains Pads tions: forward, forward/mid, back/mid and back. This helps the customer to quickly set desired blade pitch for different Scraper Chains & Parts applications, according to the manufacturer. Six different 850K configurations are available: the 850K OSD, 850K WT (wide track) OSD, 850K LGP (low ground pressure) OSD, 850K LT (long track) PAT, 850K WLT PAT, and 850K LGP PAT. Chicago Pneumatic Rivet Busters Used in Concrete Demo Chicago Pneumatic CP 4608 and CP 4611 Rivet Busters are designed to offer precise control through a high powerto-weight ratio and a teasing throttle for progressive hitting

frequency. The teasing throttle feature is part of a controlled power system (CPS) that is designed to prevent blank firing when

Originally designed for removing rivets and various other metal applications, the CP 4608 and CP 4611 rivet busters also are used for concrete demolition and bridge work.

a unit’s rubber bumper is 75-percent worn. At that point the outward movement of the rivet buster’s upper and lower sleeves opens bleeding ports for air, causing the piston to stop in its lower position as air is exhausted above the tool retainer. Originally designed for removing rivets and various other metal applications, the CP 4608 and CP 4611 rivet busters also are used for concrete demolition and bridge work, since they are said to have approximately the same hitting power as a 60 lb. (30 kg) breaker for half its weight. The Chicago Pneumatic rivet busters are available in choice of cylinders. The CP 4608 features an 8-in. (20 cm) cylinder with 1,080 bpm and the CP 4611 has an 11-in. (28 cm) cylinder, 720 bpm. The Boyer valve and the long piston stroke is designed to deliver the power needed on most jobs. A stepped cylinder configuration is designed to prevent accidental ejection of the hardened steel piston from the cylinder. CP Rivet Busters come with a choice of forged steel handle. There is an open grip handle with outside trigger or a Dshaped handle with inside-the-handle trigger. Typical applications for the CP Rivet Busters include bridge deck work where the weight of breakers is restricted, de-capping foundation pillars where concrete is very hard, demolition of medium- to hard-concrete, or as an alternative to paving breakers where high hitting power is needed but the work space is limited or the task calls for working horizontally. Deere & Company’s New Holland Plans Cultivating Excavators… on Shifting Focus to Volvo Construction Michael Mack Jr. Compact Products Equipment to Build Joins AEM Board Plant in Russia

New Holland Construction announced Sept. 15 that in North America it will refocus on its strengths: the compact product lines for the landscaping, utility, residential construction and agriculture industries, among others. As a result, starting in 2012 New Holland Construction will begin withdrawing from the North American market its crawler dozers, motorgraders, 80 plus horsepower wheel loaders, 6 plus ton excavators and telescopic handlers. As part of its on-going expansion in developing markets, Volvo Construction Equipment has announced it will build a new excavator plant in Kaluga, Russia. The new plant will be built on the 37 acres of land Volvo acquired in 2007. The Kaluga plant will initially manufacture five models of Volvo excavator including the Volvo EC210, EC240, EC290, EC360 and EC460, with production planned to begin in the first quarter of 2013. President and CEO of Volvo Construction Equipment, Pat Olney, said the new plant will meet increasing demand in the country. “The new investment in Russia is part of our strategy to build machines where they are sold and thanks to a strong partnership with our Russian dealer, Ferronordic, our customer base is growing significantly in the country. “We have seen a strong commitment from Ferronordic, who is investing a substantial amount of money to support their further expansion in the Russian market.” At present, the growing construction equipment market in Russia is estimated to reach approximately 25,000 units in 2011.

FlangeLock Contamination Control Tool Receives FlangeLock LLC, founded and based in Greenwich, Conn., received a patent from the U.S. Patent Office within the past two months for its contamination control tool, the FlangeLock. The FlangeLock tool is an easy-to-use cap that slides onto the fitting and is sealed with one turn of the bottom plug, keeping oil in and contaminants out. It is produced in sizes for 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 32 in codes 61, 62 and KAT-style hydraulic flanges. The FlangeLock is manufactured in Connecticut with lightweight anondized aluminum. The FlangeLock is color-coded for easy-to-identify sizes. “The FlangeLock represents major savings in a number of areas,” Mike Pearl, part owner of FlangeLock LLC, said. “It will save time because there won’t be any oil leaking and having to be cleaned up. It will save money because again, with no leaks, no oil is wasted. And a really big savings will be with EPA cleanups. The EPA is looking at a lot of equipment right now and a lot of companies are being temporarily shut down in order to get things cleaned up. The FlangeLock will cut way down on that lost time and money.” Equipment owners seeking to stop oil

leaks are not the only ones who benefit from the FlangeLock. Pearl foresees the factories where the equipment is manufactured being able to use the FlangeLock during the assembly process to keep contaminants from entering the lines and, if a customer desires, selling them on the equipment. As well, “hoses get cleaned and capped when you buy them,” Pearl said, “but there’s nothing to keep the caps on. A customer buys some hoses, tosses them into the back of a truck, the caps come off and those new hoses are already contaminated. The contaminants get into the machine, and there’s a problem. We have the solution.” Since the FlangeLock’s inception in 2009, the company’s dealership network has substantially grown. Initially the product was distributed only through www.flangelock.com and HO Penn, headquartered in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Today, the FlangeLock can be found across the United States and Canada through such dealers as Cleveland Brothers, based in Harrisburg, Pa.; Edward Ehrbar Inc., Yonkers, N.Y.; SunSource, with many branches throughout the United States; Genesis Attachments; Jewell Attachments; Finning CAT of Canada; HosePower USA, with branches across the United States; Dakota Fluid

Power, with branches in the Dakotas and Nebraska; Progressive Hydraulics, with branches in New Jersey and New York State; and many more. And with the FlangeLock’s ever-growing distributorship, Pearl said he’s hoping to approach selling 10,000 pieces sold by the end of 2011, as well as continuing to expand with additional distributorships. For more information call Mike Pearl at 914/980-8890, or visit flangelock.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

Stereotyped as Rednecks, Griffin’s Crew Earned Respect GRIFFIN from page 1

Griffin took to the immense clean-up project with more than good citizenship, which virtually everyone in America was feeling at that moment. Cynicism and partisanship had been quickly shelved in those post-attack days. American flags flew everywhere and there was no shortage of volunteer help available. But Griffin also was vice president of a family firm, D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company, which in 2001 had been around for more than 40 years. He knew demolition and he knew he wanted to put himself in a position to help New York City begin to shake off the effects of its catastrophic structural collapse. Ten years later, Griffin looks back on the days that followed his arrival in New York City with the same down-to-earth, pragmatic calm that stood him in good stead in the days of national panic. He declines to talk about it at length, embellishes nothing in the telling, and seems unchanged by the heady experience of being a major player in NYC recovery efforts while the whole world watched. He received no special public honors for his work, nor is his name engraved on plaques around the city. He likes that just fine. “The heroes were the firemen and rescue responders who worked and died that day,” he said quietly from his office in Greensboro almost precisely a decade after his fateful drive to New York. “They’re the ones who deserve the honors.” Griffin’s story, however, deserves recalling, heroic or not, because it is about construction and demolition expertise, personal gumption and character. It also is about a man from the rural South who had the chutzpah to take on New Yorkers on their own concrete-and-asphalt turf and win their respect. “They called us all kinds of names,” a North Carolina newspaper quoted Griffin telling some Kiwanis club members the year after the towers fell. He and a few D.H. Griffin crew members working with him were rudely, if teasingly, stereotyped. “They thought for sure I was a redneck from North Carolina. They called us the Clampetts and asked if we sat around and played banjos on our porches.” R.E.S.P.E.C.T The day Griffin arrived in New York City, he parked his wife and children in a hotel, put on a hardhat and walked toward the debris-laden site. To get there, he had to cross two barricaded lines. The first line, five blocks from the scene, was unguarded and he just walked through it without challenge. At the second barricaded line a block farther on, police and National Guardsmen

Griffin and other clean-up personnel worked a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week removal process.

Cranes, dump trucks and excavators with grapple attachments were used to dismantle, separate, load and haul away the mountains of debris.

patrolled. Griffin looked wistfully beyond them toward the destruction. The serendipitous arrival of a Salvation Army donut truck at that moment distracted the armed guards, and Griffin took a deep breath, crossed through, and walked on ahead. This may have been the only 2001 security failure that no one rues today. Griffin was appalled by what he saw at the scene, including piles of debris 50 ft. (15 m) high. He walked over to where various emergency department employees were working through 15-ft. (4.5 m) high mounds of debris in the street, the outer edge of the remains of one of the towers. At one point, the workers labored in the shadow of an upright steel girder that posed a threat to their safety, and discussion began about how to remove it. Griffin spoke up, revealing a Southern accent notably different from everyone else on the site as well as evident knowledge of how to proceed. People turned to him wondering who the heck he was. It was the beginning of a general recognition of Griffin’s demolition expertise. Engineers on site began to consult with him, though he was not yet deemed to be an

authority: It took two full days for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to put him in charge of demolition — not bad for a “redneck.” General respect for his professional judgment was still to come, however. It arrived about two weeks later when on-site debate ensued about removal of a steel curtain wall that stood shakily 12 stories high. Contractors wanted to call in cranes, hoist workers with torches, and cut the structure apart where it stood. Griffin and his company workmates, including his cousin Rusty Griffin, thought the crane approach too timeconsuming and unsafe. As skeptics watched, Griffin simply attached cables to the huge upright shard and pulled it back and forth till it toppled. In less than an hour, the structure was down and being cut apart safely on the ground. “Getting that curtain wall down saved millions of dollars,” Griffin said. “There wasn’t anyone else around to make such decisions. We had the ability to make the decision and to move on.” The decision cemented his reputation as a decisive leader, a label he had begun to earn a few days earlier when he had summarily

fired a contractor that wasn’t fulfilling the terms of its contract. Griffin was subsequently told he had fired a Mafia-front company, which he admits concerned him for a few days. Working from a trailer parked a block from the site, Griffin and other clean-up personnel settled into a 24-hour-a-day, 7-daysa-week removal process. His quarters improved in a few months. His office was moved to the American Express Tower, also known as the Three World Financial Center, after it was repaired, having been heavily damaged by the falling towers. However, his work schedule didn’t change much. Many 100-hour weeks were recorded by Griffin along with everyone else working there. Griffin said he was away from the site 19 days in 8 months. “It was stressful,” he said. “It was tough, tiring in many ways.” Looking Back Griffin smoothly transitioned back to work with the family company after the twin-tower clean-up was completed in 2002 — four months ahead of schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars under budget. His was a successful stewardship by just about any yardstick, and at the end of it, Griffin simply resumed work at D.H. Griffin Wrecking. In 2009, the company was listed by Demolition & Recycling International as the 6th largest demolition / recycling company in the world. Today, David H. Griffin Jr. is president of the companies, which includes affiliated new construction, environmental, site preparation and general contracting divisions. Its corporate office still is in Greensboro, but the company operates from offices in eight states from Virginia to Texas. Griffin’s father who founded the company still puts in a full day and is, Griffin said, “the real boss.” What Griffin took away from the New York City experience was many memories, some of which he obviously is reticent to talk about. He said it seems like it happened three or four years ago, not 10 years. “It has gone fast.” Memories aside, Griffin talks mostly about the excruciating demands placed upon everyone working the project — physical, emotional, and spiritual — as well as the relationships forged. “It was a lot of pressure and the stakes were as high as they get,” he said. “It was pretty much a baptism by fire. Looking back, I learned an awful lot. I was hoeing a rough row, but I had a lot of good, smart people working with me.” Construction equipment called in to dismantle, separate, load and haul away the mountains of fallen-building debris was not see GRIFFIN page 56

the W 250 is 7.2 ft. (2.20 m). This can be optionally extended by fitting the machine with additional milling drum units for working widths of 8.2 ft. (2.50 m), 10.2 ft. (3.10 m), 11.5 ft. (3.50 m), 12.5 ft. (3.80 m), up to a maximum 14.4 ft. (4.40 m). Optimal Work Environment The W 250 operating platform provides the operator with an optimal work environment, which speeds productivity and provides an abundance of operating information. Part of this intuitive operating environment — a multifunctional control display — operates as a practical information hub. It can be swung to the left or right of the operator — together with the level pro control panel — and displays operating status and servicing data in an easily comprehensible way. The control display provides user-friendly diagnostic options with clear graphics for identifying the source of any problem. Another handy function is the logging of job data: at the end of the day, the log can show how many trucks have been loaded and the overall

tonnage that was achieved. Like the W 200 and W 210 cold mills, the new W 250’s parallel-tosurface (PTS) system automatically aligns the W 250 parallel to the road surface. The system ensures simple, accurate operation of the machine in demanding profiling jobs. PTS also assists the operator with positioning the machine in the milled cut to initiate the milling process. In automatic mode, the system takes care of all the steps that the operator would otherwise need to select manually one after another; the need for repetitious manual correction is eliminated. The operator activates the integral level pro control system at the flick of a switch, and all four crawler track units of the large milling machine are lowered simultaneously at high speed. When the milling drum unit reaches the surface to be milled, the lowering speed is reduced and the milling drum slowly penetrates the material down to the set depth. The automatic process helps to prevent excessive cutting tool wear or even tool failure when commencing the milling operation. The same applies when the W see MILLING page 46

Roadtec’s RX-400 Cold Planers Get Makeover Roadtec introduced the RX-400 cold planer three years ago, and since then the machine has undergone a number of refinements. The machine had been introduced to fill contractors’ needs for a flexible cold planer with a cutter housing that won’t clog up with narrow cuts. The standard cutting width of the RX-400 is 48 in. (120 cm). An optional variable cutting system including 26 and 36 in. widths (66 and 90 cm) is available, as is a 60 in. (152 cm) cutting width package. Maximum cut depth is 12.5 in. (32 cm). The RX-400 cutter housing design provides efficient material evacuation even with deep cuts in clog-prone, loose material, according to the manufacturer. Efficient material evacuation prevents undue wear on cutting teeth and holders and improves productivity. A redesign affecting the stability of the rear leg tube connection point was phased in soon after production began along with a number of other improvements related to performance and operator ergonomics. Recent changes include a new bolt-on design for the right rear leg with a swivel pivot point for steering. Along with that change all key sizes on the machine’s leg tubes are now the same and also have been beefed up to increase life span. The RX-400 and the RX-500 both use a common key design now. Several areas of the machine have undergone changes for ease of service and inspection. For example the rear anti spin valve and rear track drive bulkheads are much more accessible and bulk head fittings are being used now for track drive and endgate hoses to make hose changes easier. Additionally the hydraulic system has undergone modifications to prevent excessive leakage at low speed under load. The RX-400 cold planer features a 325 hp (242 kW) Caterpillar C9 ACERT engine, and a maximum operating speed of 172 feet per minute (52 mpm).

The new generation Roadtec RX-400 cold planer features a rear-mounted drum.

Compact Tandem Rollers Designed for Tight Spaces Dynapac articulated compact tandem rollers are designed for asphalt compaction in tight spaces, such as streets and pavements in urban areas. The CC1100, CC1200 and CC1300 models are available in either a dual steel vibratory drum configuration or in a combi version featuring one vibratory drum and four rubber rear tires. The machines are powered by water-cooled Kubota diesel engines, which are designed to run quietly and fuel efficiently. The CC1100 weighs 5,070 lbs. (2,300 kg) and features a 42-in. (107 cm) drum width; the CC1200 weighs 5,360 lbs. (2,431 kg) and has a 47-in. (119 cm) drum; and the larger CC1300 weighs 8,270 lbs. (3,751 kg) and features a 51 in. (129 cm) wide drum. The CC1300 is considered suitable for compacting sub-bases and base courses and can follow a small paver, according to the manufacturer. The CC1100 and CC1200 feature drum diameters of 27 in. (68.5 cm), while the CC1300 has a 32-in. (81 cm) drum diameter, making these models especially effective on soft asphalt compounds. In addition, the ratio of drum diameter to static linear load will help reduce the risk of surface cracks. The high clearance at the drum edge is designed to facilitate compaction close to high curbs. With the combi versions of the three models, the rubber tires are operated in With the combi versions of the three models, pairs by separate drive motors.

the rubber tires are operated in pairs by separate drive motors. This can reduce the risk of marring newly laid asphalt when making turns, according to the manufacturer. The Dynapac articulated compact tandem rollers are built using common parts to ensure better parts availability and to help retain resale values. They are equipped with a high capacity, corrosion-free, impact-resistant water tank. Three separate filters help alleviate problems of clogged sprinkler nozzles. The entire sprinkler system is configured to be drained easily with a few simple hand operations. The model range features redesigned ergonomic controls, as well as handgrips and boarding steps designed to make it safer to get on and off the machine. The CC line also comes equipped with standard features such as a sideways sliding seat, dual driving controls and working lights. The new model range features lower operating costs for any paving contracting operation, big or small, while improved ergonomics and visibility help increase productivity for the professional compaction operator. Options are available to configure the machines to a contractor’s specific application needs. For more information, visit www.dynapac.us.

exotic at all — mostly cranes, heavy dump trucks and excavators with grapple attachments because the steel girding was too large for shearing and had to be torched apart. No special machinery was required and, he added, nothing that has come on the market since 2001 would have been used instead. The project was, he suggested, just another demolition job but on a horrifically large scale. “It was,” Griffin observed, “the super bowl of the demolition industry.” Griffin also came away with renewed confidence about running projects and crews. “I learned some new management skills,” he said, “what with being involved with 28 different agencies and all the maneuvering and figuring out how to work though the different agencies. There were so many moving parts and you had to tiptoe around to get what we wanted. Now when I’m working with only three agencies, it feels like a cakewalk.” He said he learned some more things about how to work with people. “There was so much emotion, so I learned some new negotiating skills.” His straight-forward approach to demolition problems, which landed him the management position, continued to operate for the duration of the project. “We would make a plan and we would move forward,” he recalled of the work days. “I’d say, ‘You can’t talk it down. You can only study something so long. You ain’t going to talk it down.’ So we would make a plan and implement it and go.” Griffin said that “a lot of things we learned in New York, we use now on other sites.” There are many opportunities to do so: The D.H. Griffin Companies network has 1,000 employees and a 600-piece equipment fleet. The company annually produces more than $400 million in project revenue. Just One Regret Griffin cradles in his memory some scenes and memories that he doesn’t talk about, the demolition site also being the death site of nearly 3,000 people. The debris consisted of more than fractured bricks and mangled steel. Yet as a management exercise and project, cleaning up the acres and acres of fallen buildings, crushed cars and destroyed infrastructure was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Satisfyingly, he could chalk it up as a professional success. As a token of the clean-up, Griffin carried

back to Greensboro on a flatbed truck a piece of one of the core beams of a fallen tower. His only regret, Griffin said, is that he didn’t salvage a few more pieces of the iconic buildings. “I wish I had saved more steel,” he said. “Through the years, I have had a lot of requests from fire departments for steel to be used in memorials. At the 10th anniversary, we gave away about 50 pieces.” He spent the 10th anniversary in Greensboro, incidentally, participating in a couple of 9/11 events in the community, far away from the ceremonies in New York City. In fact, he has been back to NYC just 10 times during the decade since he worked there, and not at all in the last four or five years. To be in the proximity of the disaster site, now a commemorative site, evidently is not something he needs in order to be reminded of the tragic event itself and of his involvement in the desperate scramble to clean it up. “Remembering the event just makes me appreciate what I have,” he said, cutting short the interview to return to work. “Every one of the people who died that day was just doing his job. That’s all. No different from me and you.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG
