One of Africa’s most ambitious projects ever is taking shape in the DRC. It promises to alleviate poverty, stimulate economic growth and bring about rapid industrialization for most of Africa. The project is the Inga hydroelectric project that promises when completed to generate over 40,000mw of electrical power to meet Southern and Western Africa’s power needs about half of Africa’s needs to be precise. Phase 1 and phase 2 were completed in the seventies and eighties respectively and generate 4,800mw but the new 6 phase project is what could prove to be a game changer by providing 40,000mw. The power generated would be double the capacity of the largest dam in the world, the Three Gorges Dam in China. Coming at a time when hydroelectric power station projects have been facing sustained opposition for their negative environmental impact and questionable economic viablility the next phase it is set to go ahead at a cost of US$12billion. The Grand Inga mega-project is a priority project for a number of Africa development organizations, including the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), East African Power Pool (EAPP) and ESKOM, Africa’s largest power utility, among others. The project’s negative social and environmental aspects must be weighed against the benefits it can afford Africa by providing clean, cheap energy for Africa’s industrialisation and manufacturing ambitions.

An economic development mega-project in the name of Tunisia Economic City has been unveiled. The planned city will host a variety of facilities, including a range of business and commercial centers that will aid international business. It will also have research and science centers, university and medical centers, as well as branches of foreign universities. Enfidha district, which is located strategically in the heart of the Mediterranean, will be the construction point for the new City. The city will be strategic for business since the district sits at the crossroads between Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Facilities up for construction will include 14 smart zones, four economic centres, and residential areas. The plan is to construct a modern global-level economic city that aids regional and international trade. It will have academic centers, research hub and economic centers, but having residential and commercial facilities/units will make it a mixed-use development. The city will host smart zones, tourist attraction sites, and health facilities. It will also contribute to tourism. The economic zones will be available for use by international/multinational corporations, financial institutions, insurance firms just to mention a few, and these will take advantage of a Tax free zone. The academic center will entail a research hub, Medical City, University City, research hub and an agriculture center. Hence, it will have “cities” within a city.

Bombardier awarded US$ 45m contract for Ethiopian rail project Yapı Merkezi, a Turkish firm undertaking construction of the Awash-Wedie rail, has awarded Bombardier Transportation company a contract to deliver mainline signaling for the rail project. The contract is valued at US$ 45m and is one of the longest lines tendered as a turnkey project in Sub-Saharan Africa according to Erdem Arioglu, who is a board member of Yapi Merkezi. Part of an investment programme by Ethiopian Railways to extend the country’s rail network, the new link is to be equipped with the proven BOMBARDIER* INTERFLO* 250 solution. The system will be based on the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a global, standardized and state-of-the-art signaling system that will ensure the new railway’s high utilization and interoperability with other lines and new vehicles. Yapi Merkezi is constructing the railway line at a cost of US$ 1.7bn. The line is being constructed between Awash and Woldia towns. The railway line will connect northern Ethiopia with central region. It will also link the northern and eastern transportation network of Ethiopia. The rail project is expected to be complete by December 2015. Bombardier’s advanced rail control solutions have already been selected for provision of services across Africa.

O
ne of Africa’s greatest challenges is the provision of electricity to power its industries and stimulate socio-economic growth amongst its population. When you consider that 12 percent of Africa’s 2 billion people have access to electricity, then the magnitude of the problem only begins to become apparent. In addition, where power is available, its cost is high, leading to an uncompetitive environment for the manufactured goods. Africa’s Great Rift Valley better known for its picturesque mountains, escarpments and lakes has become the new source of hope to enabling Africa to meet its energy needs well into the 21st century. In recent years, the geothermal energy potential on the valley floor has attracted the attention of major investors keen to tapping into an energy source that is plentiful, renewable and largely environmentally friendly. According to the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA), potential of geothermal energy in the

Great Rift Valley is estimated at 14,000 MW. The Great Rift Valley is a 6,000km terrain stretching from northern Syria to central Mozambique in South Eastern Africa. In East Africa alone, the region’s Rift Valley has vast geothermal reserves. If tapped, this can considerably reverse Africa’s chronic energy shortages. Recent geological surveys have provided evidence that Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania have huge potential for geothermal energy, which could reduce heavy reliance on hydropower and fossil fuel in these countries and the region. According to an assessment by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility, there is 4,000MW of electricity ready for harvesting along the Rift Valley. Like other renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro, geothermal offers significant potential in terms of climate change mitigation. “Geothermal is 100 percent indigenous, environmental-friendly and a technology that has been under-utilized for too long. It is time to take this technology off the back burner in order to power livelihoods, fuel development and reduce dependence on polluting and unpredictable fossil fuels,” the UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner has been reported as having said in the past. The big money seems to agree and several institutions such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, USAID, Icelandic International Development Agency and the Nordic Development Fund are making financing available to governments in the Rift Valley countries for geothermal development according to a report by consultancy firm Norton Rose Fulbright. Past Setbacks Despite the huge potential already acknowledged progress in development of geothermal energy in the past has been slow with only Kenya and Ethiopia having small installed capacities. This has been blamed on lack of funding, the high risk nature in the drilling oerations as well as poor legal framework and policy in government. But today, greater focus has been given by governments due to rising fossil fuel costs, droughts and siltation of hydro electric dams, and the ever looming power deficit in Africa that was growing faster than the rate of the installed power capacity. In a move to bring about greater focus, Kenya established the Geothermal Development Company, Tanzania has recently established the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company a subsidiary of TANESCO the local power utility firm while Uganda is in the process of setting up a geothermal resources department. Despite all this activity, however, only Kenya and Ethiopia have tapped this renewable resource to date in the Rift Valley. In the case of Kenya, the first geothermal plant in Africa was commissioned in 1980’s. The 45 MW plant was commissioned in three phases and has three units each generating 15MW of electricity. The first unit was commissioned in June 1981, the second and third units in November 1982 and March 1985, respectively. Kenya has set a goal of generating 1,200 MW by 2015. Experts estimate that Kenya alone has a potential of 5,000MW. Kenya's vast geothermal energy located in the Great Rift has more than enough power to light up the entire nation. Recently, the President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the Olkaria 4 gothermal power plant which has added 140MW of electricity and later in the year a further 140MW is expected to come online. The increased geothermal power will have a significant impact on the country that has for long depended on expensive fosil fuel generators to make up for the country’s electricity deficit. Indications are that power costs to consumers could go down as much as 50 percent.
Ethiopia Ethiopia also has a considerable renewable energy endowment and it is moving to tap its geothermal potential. It has so far signed a preliminary agreement with a US-Icelandic firm, Reykjavik Geothermal, for a US$4bn private sector investment intended to tap its vast geothermal power resources. The aim is to construct a 1, 000 MW geothermal power plant, Africa's largest, in the volcanically active Rift Valley. Gunnar Orn Gunnarsson, COO, Reykjavik Geothermal said the company expects to bring on board at least four other partners under an agreement that would help mobilize between US$40 m to US$80m to help cover drilling of at least five wells. “We think we have a project that can have a return on equity that is acceptable by the investors,” Gunnarsson said. Power will be extracted from under the volcanic Corbetti Caldera crater. The first 500 MW of power from Corbetti Caldera is projected to come onstream in 2018 and the second 500 MW by 2021. Kenya Kenya has the largest installed geothermal electric capacity in Africa and the present projects in the country are Kenya’s efforts to diversify its power sources as it moves to cut reliance on hydropower which currently contributes 46% of the country’s electricity needs, but which is vulnerable to weather fluctuations. Currently, the country has a total electricity generation capacity of 1,500MW of which geothermal contributes 200MW. This is in stark contrast to USA’s 3000MW capacity. Various methods have been deployed to ensure that the concrete used is of the best quality possible. Additives are such products. Common terms There are three terms used for the mixtures used in concrete. These admixtures are supplied in ready-to-use liquid form and are added to the concrete at the plant or at the jobsite. Successful use of admixtures depends on the use of appropriate methods of batching and concreting. Concrete additives have various functions depending on what the contractor wants to achieve. There are two main types of concrete additives which are chemical and mineral. Chemical admixtures reduce the cost of construction, modify properties of hardened concrete, ensure quality of concrete during mixing/transporting/placing/curing, and overcome certain emergencies during concrete operations.

ike all technology driven industries, the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) sector is highly dynamic and responsive to changes in technology, consumer tastes and other variables that dictate what manufacturers offer to the market. Constant research to produce innovative products suitable for different environments therefore forms an integral part of HVAC manufacturers’ operations. In the past, demand for air conditioning especially in developing countries was mainly felt in areas that typically experienced hot and humid weather. And even then, consumers were perfectly content with fans or anything that blew some amount of cold air during these periods. Today, the situation is very different. Consumer awareness has increased tremendously. Demand for air conditioning is now virtually universal. Tastes and preferences are constantly changing. For example, many employees working in modern offices are increasingly aware of the correlation between air quality and overall health. There is therefore a demand for systems that not only keep the working environment conducive but also ones that simultaneously supply clean air. A similar situation is being witnessed in residential buildings. In addition, consumers are looking for HVAC systems that are energy efficient, easy to operate and aesthetically appealing. No longer are they comfortable with huge, expensive to run equipment protruding from walls of their living and working spaces. These changing tastes have seen manufacturers of air conditioners redouble their efforts at innovation. And nowhere is this innovation more evident than at Samsung Electronics.A global leader in technology, the giant Korean company has continued to churn creative products from its HVAC division in response to market demands. In Africa, the company has developed special products specifically suitable for the continent under its Built for Africa (BFA) initiative. This means that the products developed for the market take into account special
challenges facing many parts of the continent such as unstable electricity supply and environmental concerns. For example, BFA systems such as the ultra modern DVMS air conditioner currently on offer on the commercial market come with voltage fluctuation protection, corrosion resistance, peak power demand control and long-life heat exchanger fin. Samsung Electronics has established major operational centers on the continent. One of these is Nairobi, Kenya. George Kebaso is Manager, Air Conditioning Division based at the Nairobi office. The Nairobi office, which operates as Samsung Electronics East Africa Ltd., serves 17 countries throughout East and Central Africa. With seven years’ experience in the industry, Mr. Kebaso has seen the sector grow in leaps and bounds. “Previously, demand for air conditioning was mainly in the residential category but this has now changed such that we have a 50:50 scenario for commercial and residential units”, he says. Mr.Kebaso is spearheading an ambitious market penetration strategy to capture the lion’s share of the HVAC market in his region. Already, the company enjoys market leadership in the commercial segment in the East African market according to the division leader. In this segment, the company has seen growth of more than 100 percent compared to the previous year and intends to maintain this momentum. “We have been very precise in targeting this specific market and have therefore introduced units specifically suited for it”, says Mr.Kebaso. “As you know, air conditioners operate differently in different environments.” He says part of his company’s strategy is value addition through such overtures as extended warranties and free design to developers intending to install air conditioning systems. Although design can be quite expensive, taking up approximately two percent of an entire project cost, Mr. Kebaso is confident that this value added service will pay off in terms of more uptake of their units. “My team and I have received immense support December - January 2015

for this initiative from the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Samsung in East and Central Africa, Mr. Robert Ngeru,” he says. A common perception is that air conditioning is expensive and untenable. But says Kebaso to those who hold this view: “It’s true that in the past, it was expensive to purchase and to maintain. However, today we have, for example, inverter systems that save over 30 percent of energy costs.” Samsung is working with key stakeholders in the construction industry to provide air conditioning solutions in new and existing developments. In Nairobi, some developments are already enjoying Samsung’s superior technology. The Oval, a high end office development in Nairobi’s exclusive Westlands suburb, has been fitted with an air conditioning system that offers individual consumption billing so that tenants pay for only what they consume. Another major development in Samsung air conditioning technology is smart systems that can be operated through apps on smartphones. It is now possible to switch on the system in a desired room well ahead of the room’s occupation or use. In addition, if one accidentally forgets to power down the system when leaving the premises, one can send shutdown instructions online. New air conditioners in medium to premium segments also come with Remote Management operability. Mr. Kebaso reveals that this feature enables technicians located far from the air conditioners to work on those units online. (At the time of this interview he had been working on a system installed in Tanzania the December - January 2015
previous day). “The units are also intelligent in that they are able to precisely diagnose a malfunction”, explains Mr. Kebaso. So why would someone choose Samsung air conditioners over other brands in the market?
“There are several
reasons”, says the youthful manager. “Our units are energy efficient and are designed for comfort. They are silent and unobtrusive. Besides, we not only cool or heat air but also purify it”. In addition, he says, Samsung air conditioners have proven reliability. “You can always count on the Samsung team for professional services”, he adds. “Over 80 percent of air conditioner problems occur through faulty installation. So we have a highly skilled and trained technical team that undertakes installations and maintenance”. Mr. Kebaso explains that Samsung has been at the forefront

ompanies providing fire safety technology are today applying the knowledge that will contribute to the development of innovative, high-quality fire safety products, systems, and solutions. When protecting commercial structures where occupants range in the thousands and proterty and equipment costs are incalculable, fire protection is the uppermost concern of builders, owners, and facility managers. For large buildings with mixed occupancies, it is imperative to maintain their fire protection system and equipment to ensure proper function as designed to operate during emergency conditions. In the last decade in Africa there has been a regulation given to fire prevention and control, because most fire departments were concerned only with extinguishing fires. However in the recent pastmost urban areas have established some form of a fire-prevention unit, the staff of which concentrates on such measures as heightening public awareness; incorporating fireprevention measures in building design and in the design of machinery and the execution of industrial activity; reducing the potential sources of fire; and outfitting structures with such equipment as extinguishers and sprinkler systems to minimize the effects of fire.
Fire Suppression Systems An automatic sprinkler system is the single most important fire-safety system a building can have. In its simplest form, a sprinkler system is a network of overhead pipes (with or without water in them connected to a water supply. Milele Mall is one of the new such facilities coming up in Ngong on the outskirts of Nairobi. It is owned by Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Ngong Parish. The mall is being built within a parcel of land measuring 4.25 hectares that was previously underutilized.The project kicked off in February 2013 and is nearing completion. Architectural features The roof structure is supported by two major trusses spanning almost 80 metres anchored on the ground floor. So high were the standards that in undertaking the adjudication process, judges faced a pleasant dilemma of selecting the best amongst the excellent works in steel fabrication entries that were submitted. mongst the judges there was overwhelming consensus that the Malapa Fossil Excavation Site was the overall winner, as well as winner of the Association of Steel Tube and Pipe Manufacturers of South Africa’s Tubular Category. To be fair, this was not surprising. Every phase was thoroughly considered. In the area of architecture, the brief was to build a removable structure over the proposed dig site to serve three functions: protecting the site and the exposed fossils from the extremes of the weather; allowing for as much ‘dig time’ as possible; and blending in with the ‘ring of trees’ and the rest of the bush on the hillside. Further, there was need for a tourist viewing platform, a crawl hoisting structure to lift out rocks of mass up to 1 ton and impart maximum natural light into the covered area. Evidently, the project team worked around the clock, ensuring that every element was observed in the course of construction. And the result is a fascinating work of engineering. Outstandingly, when viewed from above, it takes the shape of a beetle with eight legs.

What stood out from the judges’ perspective were the following aspects: the determination of the whole team, especially the site team; the quality of the site team; the fact that when you visit the site the roof is not visible from just a few metres away;and that the construction team has left the site virtually as they found it, except for the structure.

However, in spite of stiff competition from equally compelling entries, the Bakubung Platinum Mine notched the first prize.

he 2014 Mining and Industry winner, the Bakubung Platinum Mine, under Wesizwe Platinum Limited, is an underground mine with a twin vertical shaft system- a main shaft and a ventilation shaft which also functions as the second escape route - and a process plant. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fuss about the headgear? The designs of the headgear and its associated loads are in accordance with the SANS10208 series of specifications. These specifications were drawn up by a committee under the auspices of the SAISC. The dominant loads are gravity, wind and the forces associated with the loads on the ropes and snapping of the steel wire ropes and the catapult-like effect it would have on the headgear. Skip tipping loads are considered for the permanent use. There are other impact loads from emergency situations such as overwind of conveyances that have been taken into account. Specifically, the steelwork needs to be fabricated to the highest standards with many full NDT tested penetration welds, considering that the heat input from all the welding can lead to distortion. 41

he Isando Pedestrian Bridge, which earned a commendation in the Bridge Category, epitomises the ongoing initiative aimed at upgrading freeways in and around Johannesburg. It replaces two footbridges that were built in the early 1970s. 446 metres long, ranked as one of the longest pedestrian bridges built in South Africa, it connects the Isando PRASA Rail Station with the OR Tambo International Airport precinct.
Design The central section of the bridge has spans of varying lengths.The superstructure consists of a continuous composite steel box girder with wide concrete deck slab. The main span is supported by two vertical planes of fanned cables that are anchored into the back spans. A main feature of the bridge is its two un-braced cigar shaped steel pylons – one leans forwards at 11 degrees and the other backwards.

he DRA Footbridge, earned a nomination in the 2014 Steel Awards in the category split on either side of busy Leeuwkop Road in Sunninghill, Johannesburg. Why did DRA International indulge in such extravagance? Couldn’t the funds have been channeled somewhere? Actually, the project was driven by necessity. The bridge is the best way to link the main DRA Office Park, which is located on the west corner of Leeuwkop and Witkoppen Roads, with the adjacent building on the east side ofLeeuwkop, which now houses their infrastructure division. DRA realised that staff faced safety risks from frequently crossing the busy street. Hence,a decision was made to construct a footbridge linking the two properties. Delivery time was of the essence. The major concern was: what if, in the course of 8 months of ‘brick and mortar’ construction, a member of staff got involved in an accident? For this reason, a practical method which could ensure that a high quality bridge was built within a short time had to be sought. DRA opted to construct the bridge using only steel in order to speed up completion. In the design the use of composite fibre grate flooring which is both lightweight and easy to fabricate, as well as a watertight roof and cable trays to increase the capacity of services across the entire DRA Campus was recommended. DRA carried out engineering of the support columns and the steel stair structures in-house, together with panels underneath the stairs, and space for an elevator to be installed in the future to cater for people with disabilities. Off-site fabrication reduced the time it took to erect the structure and made transportation easier. Further,

Kenya – the trailblazer Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM) was set up in Mombasa in 1962, with its colour-coating and sheet profiling operations near Nairobi. Tanzania – a regional powerhouse ALAF (previously Aluminium Africa) is Tanzania’s oldest steel company, and was established in 1960. Also part of the Safal Group, ALAF sells its products from its main operation in Dar es Salaam and via service centres around the country, with substantial exports to neighbouring landlocked countries.
Spreading further afield The Safal Group opened a third coating mill in Uganda 1964, and a state-of-the-art coating mill for South Africa in 2011. Over these 50 years, the Safal Group has also established 30 roll-forming operations and 6 associated businesses in 11 African countries, making it the continent’s largest producer of quality coated steel sheeting. While most South African suppliers engage local agents, Putzmeister South Africa’s Managing Director, Ludwig Geyser, tells Construction Review that his organisation works more efficiently by dealing with sub-Saharan Africa clients directly from South Africa. “As soon as we sell a machine to a customer a relationship starts. We believe that a product is only as good as its after-service. Hence, we ensure that every machine that we have sold is functioning perfectly. “When a customer experiences a problem, we often use telephonic troubleshooting. However, it is only when we can’t solve it that we send someone. We have several travelling technicians on hand,” he says. Putzmeister offers a comprehensive aftersale service to its customers in Africa and its warehouse in Honeydew, Johannesburg, has a steady supply of replacement parts. Practical solutions Through experience and timeous market research, Putzmeister has succeeded in developing a market outside South Africa, says Geyser. “Realising that, while technology that works in South Africa is generally accepted it is not always practical. That's why, with our factories, we have developed low tech Africaspecific machines that have simplified hydraulics and electronics making fault finding easier. The products are simple, manually operated. Furthermore, they are mainly diesel-driven, convenient for most parts of Africa which have little or no access to electricity,” he explains, adding that although low-tech, the products are made to Germany quality specifications in accordance with ISO

9001 standards. With guaranteed availability of machines and spares from its factories, Putzmeister is able to meet demand in any country within their allocated region. Tailored turnkey package Putzmeister’s unique approach to African needs can also be reflected in the turnkey package tailored made for customers. Remarkable growth Putzmeister’s unique approach has paid off substantially, with tremendous growth experienced in countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to name a few. Its recent supply contracts include Dar Es Salaam-based projects, the Pension Towers and the Port Authority Building – which will be the tallest building in the area once completed – the I-Towers Phase 1 and 2 in Gaborone, Botswana, and the expansion of various mines in the DRC and Zambia. To a degree, Geyser believes the company’s success in implementing German machines in Africa has been facilitated by the groundbreaking success of Putzmeister products in projects globally. “The fact that our brand is well known in a way opens the door for us sometimes,” he says. He adds: “In the main, what works to our advantage is that every construction project in Africa needs a concrete pump. Further, we are the only group that can supply a truly turnkey project in the region – sub-Saharan Africa including the Indian Ocean Islands (Madagascar, Reunion, Seychelles, and Mauritius).” With South African construction and in infrastructure sector in a stagnant state, Putzmeister hopes to capitalise on steady demand for complete concrete solutions in subSaharan Africa. he Concrete Manufacturers Association NPC (CMA) is the primary custodian of Africa’s precast concrete industry. Over its 43 year history, the CMA has evolved from its origins as a masonry association into a body which promotes the full scope of today’s precast concrete line up. Membership is open to all precast concrete manufacturers, and members fit into either or both of the Association’s two operational pillars, Precast Building and Precast Infrastructure, depending on their product mix. Although membership has always been open to companies throughout Africa, the Association now actively recruits among African precast concrete manufacturers. Besides South Africa, the current membership roll comprises companies from Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, in addition to some from Europe and Asia looking to enter Africa’s lucrative market. Besides access to the industrial know-how of the CMA’s panel of experts, there are numerous benefits to membership.

The CMA’s promotional activities target architects, engineers, developers, contractors and property owners and the pooled knowledge and expertise of its members fosters an environment which encourages the development of innovative, environmentally and community-friendly products. Members are encouraged to hold accredited product certification such as the relevant SANS standard or to manufacture to specifications laid down by the CMA. The CMA has published numerous manuals, brochures and audio visuals on the practical application of precast concrete and this material is available to members at a nominal charge. It also runs refresher courses and holds seminars to introduce new technology and methodology, often featuring overseas experts. Over the past 15 years the CMA has virtually re-written, amended or upgraded nearly all South Africa’s national standards on precast concrete. These standards focus on both the manufacture and application of precast concrete.The preparation of new and the revision of existing standards is undertaken in collaboration with bodies such as The South African Bureau of Standards and Agrément South Africa. The Association is currently working with the SABS on the revision of four national standards. CMA director, Wally Armstrong, says the main challenge facing the CMA is to convince professionals and specifiers that the products and systems it advocates are of considerable advantage to all concerned i.e. specifiers, industry professionals, and of course, the end-user. “Our other challenge is to nurture and encourage technical skills and innovation in the manufacture and application of precast concrete industry - to the benefit of all.” Visit www.cma.org.co.za . ith a tremendous track record of delivering complex projects such as Gautrain, Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme, Medupi Power Plant as well as the 2010 World Cup stadiums for clients in South Africa on time, within budget as well as to the required quality standards, it should not be surprising that GIBB continues to excel on the continent. agent (owner engineer) or a trusted partner in projects taking place in respective African countries in all stages. Services offered by the firm range from Engineering Consulting and Implementing Agency services related to the procurement of EPC contractors and the management of project implementation on behalf of clients. Siyaya adds that additional services include, project selection and prioritisation, transaction and technical advisory services related to the mobilisation of project preparation funding, the drawing up of studies for each specific project (feasibility, techno-economic and financial, environmental and social impact, detailed pilot study and documentation for invitations to tender); GIBB also gets involved in the mobilisation of debt and other financing instruments as may be required for viable projects. Siyaya explains that the firm understands that every country has a unique way of doing business. “We ‘go native’ by building partnerships with local companies that have a better understanding of the local environment. We have realised that for us to succeed, we have to respect local culture.” Furthermore, as part of due diligence to ensure that projects are environmentally sustainable, GIBB ensures that all projects it undertakes comply with 55
the best practice engrained in its ethos. “We ensure that the projects we work on have a lasting legacy in communities in which they are meant to serve,” says Siyaya.

Focus on West Africa Buoyed by the successful completion of the massive framework and master plan for the infrastructure revitalisation and current implementation thereof in Port Harcourt, River State in Nigeria, Arcus Gibb Nigeria, is determined to make inroads into other countries in West Africa. The successful completion of the Master Plan Project and the subsequent design and the roll-out of housing and bulk infrastructure in Port Harcourt, Nigeria is very encouraging, says Wiero Vogelzang, the Managing Director of Arcus Gibb Nigeria, which is part of the GIBB family. “We see it as a springboard into the rest of Nigeria and Anglophone and Francophone countries in West Africa.” Through the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, the River State Government had contracted Arcus Gibb Nigeria to produce a Master Plan for Port Harcourt City’s infrastructure revitalisation. Specifically, the Master Plan documents how the city’s infrastructure
shall be redeveloped in the areas of transport, housing, water supply and reticulation, stormwater management, electrification and sanitation and sewerage in an environmentally sustainable manner.
