Seaport systems in developing countries increasingly reflect inter-port competition on an international basis and a global trend towards port concentration. This, is among the key findings of an analysis of port development in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) issued by PwC recently that was developed in response to the challenges facing ports in Africa highlighting controversies that are pulling the projects behind. Leasing out land earmarked for construction or upgrade of ports to overseeing of the projects themselves are just two among many other controversies facing port development in Africa. These issues have led to a slowdown in the progress of the projects, to the extent of some of the projects being put on hold altogether. It has become evident that governments need to adopt greater clarity and transparency when it comes to Involvement and regulation of port activities. As a pre-requisite for a greater number of success stories to be recorded. It is an issue that has to be given utmost priority for the sake of Africa’s development. Investment funds that go into port developments must be channeled appropriately to ensure financial sustainability and economic growth for all the involved countries.

A.B.E. expands dustless range with new floor screed a.b.e. Construction Chemicals has expanded its range of dustless cementitious products with the launch of a dustless version of abe. dur ,the company’s popular nonmetallic high-strength floor screed.
Aluprof to invest in last-mile factory in Kenya Aluprof S.A , a Netherlands-based aluminum products maker is set to invest US $2m in a showroom and last-mile factory in Kenya. Market development manager Henry Kago said the showroom to be located in Mombasa Road, Nairobi will also host a training hub for local technicians as well as machines for customizing products for individual customers. “Aluprof has local partners that have been selling products in Kenya and our presence seeks to bolster their presence across East and central Africa enabling them to win more contracts,” he said. Major contract for construction and installation of facades The Netherlands firm has since clinched a major contract for construction and installation of facades for the upcoming 70-floor twin Pinnacle Towers that will house the 40-floor Hilton Upper Hill hotel as well as luxurious studios, apartments and penthouses currently being sold off-plan. Mr Kago, a computer engineer in Building Information Management, said Aluprof will also use the new offices to expand consultancy services across east and Central Africa on façade construction, which is a niche market for them.
a.b.e. is part of the Chryso Southern Africa Group of companies. abe.dur is now for the first time available in a dustless format, and also in a singlepack formulation (hence the “S” in the product’s name) which eliminates the need for mixing the product with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and therefore the possibility that the use of sub-standard OPC will negatively affect the screed’s performance.
Auxquimia supplies aquafilm-arn firefighting foam concentrate for kaombo project. Launched in April 2014, Kaombo is the first project on the ultradeepwater offshore, located off the Angolan coast. Its estimated 660-million-barrel reserves span a distinct system of reservoirs at water depths reaching 1,950 m. A Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil.
Peter Jones, a.b.e.’s National Sales Manager-Flooring; says the new product, abe.dur S – Dustless, is a blend of exceptionally hard, high wearing natural aggregates, shrinkage-compensated cement – free from any metallic material – ideal to produce a durable granolithic type of floor.
A FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by itself or from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker or, less frequently, transported through a pipeline.
Suitable for both interior and outdoor flooring “abe.dur S Dustless is suitable for both interior and outdoor flooring surfaces that experience heavy wear and operate in very wet or dry situations.

NSE and AISA to revive Nigeria’s Ajaokuta Steel Company The Nigerian Society Of Engineers, NSE together with African Iron and Steel Association, AISA are working with the National assembly to create a set of laws to establish a responsive and protective ecosystem for the steel sector in bid to revive Ajaokuta Steel Company.
SEDA-E to introduce new standards for small scale solar home system Solar Energy Development Association Ethiopia, SEDA-E seeks to propose new national standards for the small scale solar home system with a primary aim of regulating imported items. Most of the solar technologies used in Ethiopia are reported to be imported from Asian countries and a report by the World Bank Group magnifies that about 60% of the solar technology products in Ethiopia’s market are poor quality or sub-standard products. According to Dereje Walelgn, president of SEDA-E, the new standard can ensure quality, as the market has been flooded with sub-standard products.
The associations, have expressed confidence over the full take off of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, assuring that everything about the project will soon be resolved and that there was no cause for alarm as the company was on a sure path of revival. “We are advocating for the establishments of a Steel Development Authority, just like we had in the 70s. The rationale behind this is to promote the separation of powers which are presently mumbled up in the Ministry of Solid minerals. In essence, the Steel Authority shall oversee the operations and productivity of the steel sector; while the ministry shall serve as regulators for pricing, policy formulations and others”, said Natasha Akpoti, a lawyer and social reformer. “I have no doubt the resuscitation of Ajaokuta’s steel complex for the good of Nigeria will be a dream come true”,she added.
The standard was drafted with a joint effort by the Ministry of Water, Irrigation & Electricity, Ethiopia MoWIE, Standards Agency and Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change with the initiation to drafting the standard coming from the MoWIE that requested the Standard Agency to prepare the standard in November 2016. “We believe the standard will increase the use of renewable energy in the country and encourage the private sector to involve in the business,” said Frehiwot Kebede, state minister of MoWIE.
ACEK to review dam’s regulatory requirement in 30 days Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya, ACEK has formed a task force to inspect and establish whether all dam regulatory requirements were met during construction of the solar dam in the Nakuru County. The action followed the loss of 47 lives after the collapse of the Dam on May 10 due to heavy rains leaving hundreds of people homeless. “There was clear evidence the earth wall of the dam had started failing much earlier yet no attempt was made to rectify the situation,” said Eng Charles Akinyele Akindayomi. The Water and Sanitation ministry, which gazetted the task force, said it will assess operations and regulations on the safety and general status of dams in the country. The association will work hand in hand with Samuel Alimia from Ministry of Water and

Cape Construction Expo 2018
Modernizing African airports through enhanced operations, security and private funding opportunities
Tanzania’s new-found gas reserves are valued at an estimated US $20 billion. Many look at these prospects with optimism, as this revenue may help Tanzania achieve its goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2025.
The demand for middle and high-income housing continues to intensify, while Cape Town’s urban concentration policies are driving the provinces ‘minibuilding boom’.
Air traffic demand in Africa is forecasted to grow by 7-8% each year on average over the next 20 years, doubling in size each decade. However, with the current capacity constraints, financing gaps and security issues, airport authorities and government are actively seeking solutions in a bid to become the hub of choice for the continent. With this in mind, we are pleased to organize the Modern Airports Africa Conference where countries across Africa who are actively working on regional airport projects will come together.
Tanzania will soon enter the ranks of oil and gas producing countries. Tanzania’s mining sector has been playing an increasingly important role in the economy. Mining sector output, by value, grew by about 17% in 2003, and by 15% in 2002. From 1999 through 2003, substantial increases in gold production spurred growth in the country’s mining sector by around 15% annually. Tanzania International Mining & Oil and Gas Conference & Exhibition 2018 is aimed at providing a venue for the industry as well as regulators to discuss various issues and challenges as well as to explore emerging opportunities and latest developments in East Africa’s Oil, Gas and Mining industry.
Join us at the Modern Airports Africa Conference, taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 21-22 August 2018, where Director Generals and other key influencers from the region’s aviation authorities have already confirmed attendance.

particularly in emerging African economies that are currently under-served by modern transportation facilities. Port performance must be seen in the context of not only port infrastructure shortfalls, but also the fact that port performance has a direct impact on the efficiency and reliability of the entire transport network in which the port is just a node for the transfer of goods. Africa is endowed with vast resources and a growing population, a 25% improvement in port performance could increase GDP by 2%, demonstrating the close relationship between port effectiveness and trade competitiveness.

High port logistics costs, poor reliability and low economies of scale in trade volumes have a negative impact on trade growth in Africa.
With growing congestion in many African ports, the continent runs the risk of sacrificing further growth through lack of investment in port terminal infrastructure. Access to effective ports, interconnecting infrastructure and efficient operations to cope with current demand and future growth, will lead to reduced costs and improved overall freight logistics efficiency and reliability , all of which are fundamental to the region’s future success. Trade competitiveness requires governments and key stakeholders to see ports as facilitators of trade and integrators in the logistics supply chain. Efficient ports can make countries and regions more competitive and thus improve their growth prospects. Globally, ports are gateways for 80% of merchandise trade by volume and 70% by value.
The reliability and efficiency of each port terminal, including minimizing delay to shippers, is critical to enhancing future trade facilitation. Kenya and Tanzania is expected to a be a major transshipment hub on the East Coast of Africa, which will reduce freight costs in addition to contributing to the Belt and Road.-collection of interlinking trade deals and infrastructure projects. Port operations in Mombasa and Dar es Salaam are critical to increased throughput and evacuation of cargo. Investments in rail are seen as a major step towards contributing to improved performance. Developments in multimodal operations and master planning of the ports to keep up to date with increasing throughput, which in turn fuels economic growth are critical to efficiency.
Some ports will eventually emerge as major hubs based on the degree of shipping liner connectivity and the size of the hinterland. www.constructionreviewonline.com

Historically, many governments have focused on the revenues that can be extracted from ports as opposed to recognizing them as facilitators of trade and growth. Africa needs to shift its understanding of the role ports can play and step up investment in them to achieve its economic development goals. In particular, there should be more awareness of the greater economic benefits that effective and efficient ports can play. The business case for port expansion is often only defined once capacity is already constrained and thus many operate under severe pressure while investment decisions are being made. This continual lag, which often lasts years, reduces competiveness and takes no account of the resulting reduced trade impact on African economies. In contrast, China’s approach to port investment is instructive. China considers port investments on the benefits it receives from trade and thus regards ports as highly strategic investments in the national interest. High port logistics costs, poor reliability and low economies of scale in trade volumes have a negative impact on trade growth in Africa. According to PwC estimates, US $2.2bn per annum could be saved in costs if the average throughput at the major ports

in Africa doubled. In other parts of the world, such a focus on volume and efficiency has led to a stronger emphasis on hub and feeder ports for containers and enhancing scale for commodity bulk terminals. It is likely that we will see some ports eventually emerge as major hubs. PwC’s analysis shows that, based on the degree of shipping liner connectivity, amount of trade passing through a port, and the size of the hinterland, Durban (South Africa), Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) and Mombasa (Kenya) are most likely to emerge as the major hubs in Southern Africa, West Africa and East Africa, respectively. The fact that most African countries have an imbalance in trade focused on commodity exports and manufactured imports pose major cost challenges, imports are predominated by containerized cargo, while exports are mostly handled as bulk freight. luminum is the third most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust, and the third most
abundant element overall. Aluminum is popular because it is lightweight, strong, resistant to corrosion and durable. It is also ductile, malleable, and conductive and has no odour. Buildings made with aluminum are virtually maintenance free due to aluminum’s resistance to corrosion. Aluminum is also thermally efficient, which keeps buildings warm in cold seasons and cool in hot seasons. Add the fact that aluminum has a pleasing finish and can be curved cut and welded to any desired shape and you get to understand why it allows modern architects unlimited freedom to create buildings that would be impossible to make from wood, plastic, or steel. Double Glazed Units: These are made by providing air gap between two glass panes in order to reduce the heat loss and gain. Normal glass can cause immense amount of heat gain and upto 30%of loss of heat of air conditioning energy. Green, energy efficient glass can reduce this impact. Chromatic glass: This type of glass can control daylight and transparency effectively. These glass are available in three forms- photochromatic (light sensitive lamination on glass), thermochromatic (heat sensitive lamination on glass) and electrochromatic (light sensitive glass the transparency of which can be controlled by electricity switch.) It can be used in meeting rooms and ICUs. Glass wool: Glass wool is a thermal insulation that consists of intertwined and flexible glass fibers, which causes it to "package" air, and consequently make good insulating materials. Glass wool can be used as filler or insulators in buildings, also for soundproofing.

Essajee Amijee Trading Ltd – The Glass Shop The Essajee Amijee Group has been operating in the glass business since 1906, first as a general glass merchant then diversifying into picture framing and automotive glass and most recently in project implementation. They are bulk importers of all glasses but do light processing inhouse. The company works with contractors and developers in the supply and installation of glass and glass related products for commercial and residential buildings. Some of the projects completed in Kenya include Kingfisher Nest, Landmark Suites, Monarch Hotel, DusitD2 Hotel and The Crescent. The company also supplies its products to Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. user benefit from a substantial reduction in water heating costs and get a quick return on the investment. The Thermodynamic Solar Panels can capture heat from the sun, or even from the rain, snow, hail, wind, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. One of the innovative aspects is that an ecological fluid at freezing temperatures circulates through the solar panel, allowing a greater uptake of the solar energy and a higher absorption of the
environmental energy, which is then released to the water through a heat exchanger. Thus, ENERGIE’s Thermodynamic Solar Panels surpass the limitations of the traditional solar panels and make possible a more efficient increase of the water temperature. One can even have hot water when the sun is not shining because the fluid runs inside the panel at very low temperature, it can receive more solar energy, than a normal liquid, even on days without sun or at night. Because of this thermal difference, the solar panel can capture the heat existing in the environment and transmit it to the water. Thus, the system always ensures hot water up to 55o. The maintenance of the system is practically non-existent and it has high longevity and an estimated useful life of 25 years. The anodized aluminium solar panel weighs only 8 kilograms and is coated with hydrophobic flexible paint. The panel is discreet and versatile in terms of where to position it. It is also hail resistant and does not succumb to saline environments. No cleaning is required. The system is extremely easy to install and requires lesser surface area than other conventional systems. The available capacities range from 200 to 500 litres for domestic applications and 1000 to 6000 litres for commercial applications. Commercial systems are available for hotels, hospitals, residential buildings, swimming pools, schools, restaurants, food industries and central heating. ENERGIE selects the best components and subjects them to rigorous quality testing to ensure maximum customer satisfaction.

specifically in education, and health. The ultimate objection is to enhance the education and health services in these sectors. This is all done with sustainability in mind and with respect to the environment. “The foundation identifies needy institutions, and partners with them to not only provide our services at no cost but also to raise money to assist those institutions improve their infrastructure. Since its inception, we have done 6 projects and we are now on the seventh one. Last year, we went to Mathare slums and came across this school called Genesis Joy that was started by a gentleman who grew up there and is now a qualified teacher. While all the structures in the school are in a dire state, what struck us most what that the school did not have toilets! We decided we are going to partner with them to build toilets as our Triad Foundation project for year 2017. However, the project has now evolved to not only include new toilets but also the development of formal classes. We intend to put up a new classroom block for consisting of 9 classes and ablutions.” explains Arch. Ndung’u. The foundation raises funds by organizing golf tournaments every September at the Muthaiga Golf Club, to assist these schools.
