Shelter Afrique roots for green buildings

Toyota Tsusho inks agreement to build a 25MW solar Power Plant in Benin

Toyota Tsusho Corporation has signed an agreement with the Beninese Electricity Production Company to build a 25MW solar power plant in Benin. This project is the first major renewable energy power plant development effort by a Japanese corporation in West Africa.

Toyota Tsusho has contributed to increasing the production of renewable energy in Africa, including the completion in 2015 of a wind power project in Egypt with a capacity of 262 MW and the start of commercial operation of a geothermal power plant in Kenya with a capacity of 280 MW.

Pan African housing development financier, Shelter Afrique, has implored stakeholders in the built environment to put more emphasis on addressing climate change, describing it as "one of the most pressing challenges of our era."

Speaking at the Zambia EDGE Discovery Workshop - organized by Shelter Afrique Centre of Excellence (CoE), in partnership with IFC EDGE and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Zambia - Shelter Afrique Managing Director, Thierno Habib Hann, said the company shares the goal of fostering sustainable and responsible housing practices for a more resilient future.

"In a world where climate change is reshaping landscapes and altering lives, our collective efforts hold the power to forge a more sustainable path forward," Mr. Hann said.

Through its Centre of Excellence, Shelter Afrique collaborates with IFC to deliver EDGE Discovery Workshops to developers and other stakeholders in the housing industry across Africa, to accelerate the development of resource-efficient affordable housing.

Construction work is scheduled to be completed in 2024. Toyota Tsusho conducted a project development study with support by the Benin government such as the Beninese Electricity Production Company, under the programmeof the “Feasibility Study Project of Overseas Development for High-Quality Energy Infrastructure” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in FY2021.

The construction of the 25MW solar power plant in Benin will be marketed as a Japanese public-private cooperation project. That will provide reliable electricity at a lower cost. Through the development and application of new renewable energy sources, Toyota Tsusho will support the realization of a decarbonized society. HEAVY EQUIPMENTJCB ‘Zero Carbon’ Hydrogen Engine Debuts at US Expo

The JCB hydrogen engine, which already powers a prototype backhoe loader and telescopic handler, is the company’s zero-carbon emissions solution for construction equipment.

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said engineers at JCB Power Systems – the company’s engine factory in Derbyshire, UK – have made huge strides in a short space of time to build a groundbreaking hydrogen internal combustion engine.

“As the first construction equipment company to develop a fully working combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen, I’m delighted we are now able to present this technology on the international stage,” Mr Bamford said in a statement.

The new JCB hydrogen engine is designed to utilise a brand-new combustion technology that replaces diesel fuel with hydrogen gas.

Using and adapting established engine technology with readily available components, hydrogen is ignited and power is delivered the same way as a diesel engine.

“We kept the DNA of the engine; the only difference is the fuel, which is clean-burning hydrogen gas,” says Ryan Ballard a senior director at JCB.

As such, machines fitted with a hydrogen engine can do everything their diesel-powered equivalents can do.

JCB is not new to these kinds of

inventions.

The company designed the world’s first battery-electric mini excavator and has been fronting electric technology development to meet customers’ demands for zero-carbon equipment with its E-TECH range.

It currently holds the largest electric lineup in the construction industry.

In construction projects, opting to hire plant equipment brings a range of advantages when compared to investing in your own equipment, hired-in plant equipment provides a cost-effective solution, especially for shorter-term construction projects, allowing companies to

One primary drawback work noting is the potential for higher costs in the future, as we touched on earlier, whilst hired-in-plant brings with the advantage of a short-term cash flow position a huge advantage for short-term projects, the rental fees over a longer period of time can potentially surpass the upfront cost of purchasing the machinery. Hence, it is vital to carefully consider the project duration and compare rental costs against the cost of purchasing outright.

Another disadvantage is the limited availability of rental equipment during peak construction periods. When multiple projects are in progress simultaneously, the demand for specific machinery can exceed supply. This situation can delay securing the desired equipment within the desired timeframe. As we have touched on a few times throughout this blog the decision to hire plant equipment vs investing in plant equipment comes down to a range of individual factors, with the biggest of these being the project duration, for instance, for long-term construction projects (one that may go on for years) it may be a wise decision to invest in your own equipment, this way direct access to the equipment without going through an external rental company may significantly speed things up, as well as potentially saving significant financial capital.

Another factor to consider relates to the type of equipment needed, as touched on at the beginning of this blog, each piece of equipment has its own unique tasks and responsibilities it

Mbagala-Gerezani BRT System in Tanzania Nears Completion

The Mbagala-Gerezani BRT system in Tanzania has achieved significant progress, with the construction work on Phase II of the project nearing completion at an impressive 98.5%. The finalization of terminal construction remains the sole remaining aspect. Sinohydro Corporation Ltd, the appointed project contractor for the Mbagala-Gerezani BRT, underscores that the completion of this essential infrastructure will yield substantial benefits, including boosting the economy and streamlining transportation for both Dar es Salaam and Coast regions' residents.

The development of BRT terminals for the Mbagala-Gerezani BRT is in progress, with regular inspections carried out to rectify errors and ensuring the utilization of high-quality materials. Centrifugal Pumps

A centrifugal pump consists of a rotating impeller that moves water into the pump and discharges it. The rotating impeller creates a vortex as a result of which air is taken from the external environment and the developing atmospheric pressure causes the water to rise through the pump.

All the liquids can be pumped using a centrifugal pump irrespective of their viscosity. These pumps work efficiently even with thin liquids. In certain situations, the casing of a centrifugal pump is filled with vapors or gases that inhibit pumping. Such situations demand the priming process. Priming is the process of filling the casing of the pump with liquid before starting the pump. There are self-priming centrifugal pumps that have water in reserve within the impeller chamber.

Centrifugal pumps can be electric, hydraulic, gas-powered or manual type. These are often used in tunnel and foundation construction pits to handle oil, sludge and sewage.

Reciprocating pumps work based on the movement of the piston in a cylinder. Large reciprocating pumps possess 2-3 cylinders. When the piston moves in one direction, the water is drawn into the cylinder. When the piston moves to the rear end, the water is pushed out. Reciprocating pumps gain high efficiency and are reliable. They can pump the liquid at varying heads with uniform discharge. These are best suitable for low-flow conditions.

2.2. Diaphragm Pumps

Diaphragm pumps work by drawing water into the cylinder during the raising and lowering of

a diaphragm. When the diaphragm moves out, water is sucked into the cylinder. As it moves down, it is discharged to the delivery pipe. Diaphragm pumps can deliver liquids that contains 10 to 15% solids and can work with water with varying flow characteristics.

Submersible Pumps

Submersible pumps or sump pumps or electric submersible pumps (ESP) lowers the groundwater and remove water from a deep sump. The pump unit consists of a sealed motor close-coupled to the pump body. The whole unit is submerged in the fluid to be pumped.

The sump pump consists of a centrifugal unit and a motor mounted in a single cylindrical unit as shown in Figure-3. There is a space between the pump and casing that facilitates the movement of water up to the rising main.

Submersible pumps are used for heavy-duty pumping in construction which mainly involves lifting of gritty water.

Airlift Pumps

Airlift pump, as shown in Figure-4, consists of a vertical pipe that is submerged in a well in such a way that a major portion of the pipe lies below the water level. Compressed air is blown to the lower point through an air inlet. The air at the bottom carries the water up the pipe and finally to the delivery area. Airlift pumps are mainly used for moving silt from the base of a cofferdam.

How to Decide Where to Locate Electrical Generators

Many property owners are challenged with the question of where to locate their electrical generators. The difficulties are understandable: Generators —whether they’re emergency systems, legally required standby systems, or optional standby systems — are needy beasts that require a fuel supply, a combustion air supply and exhaust pathway, and a cooling air supply and exhaust pathway. They are connected via conductors and conduits to electrical power systems via automatic transfer switches or switchgear. They have extensive controls connectivity and alarms. They are generally noisy, and they generate problematic combustion emissions.

These characteristics complicate decisions about location. Property owners do not want generator operation to be so loud as to disrupt the function of the building, nor do they want the combustion exhaust gases to enter the building via outside air intakes. It’s also possible that the exhaust from the generator’s warmer cooling air reduces the rated performance of other generators or any HVAC equipment – another scenario to avoid.

A key step in addressing these issues is a fundamental decision: to locate the generator in an ownerconstructed building or outside the building in vendorsupplied housing. Each option offers advantages and disadvantages:

Generators Inside a Building

Plusses

It is more comfortable to perform maintenance (and may lead to better maintenance) and repairs inside a building than in a cramped enclosure.

The generator’s condition and status can easily be observed visually.

Minuses

The installation will be more expensive. Furthermore, the one-ofa-kind layout could lead to design or construction errors. Generator enclosures are a standard and vetted design that have been used extensively in manufacturing.

Providing adequate cooling air flow into the building and around the generators is more challenging.

Day tanks inside a building are limited to no more than 660 gallons (total), resulting in bulk fuel storage being required. If the owner is a data center operator seeking Uptime Institute Tier III or IV certification, the fuel system will have to be concurrently maintainable (maintained while the site is powered by generators) and fault-tolerant. This generally leads to concurrently maintainable double valving and redundant tanks.

A fuel polishing system may also be necessary with bulk storage of fuel.

Dispersing the generator exhaust fumes is more expensive and challenging when in a building since the fumes are usually routed horizontally out of the building instead of out or up. Consequently, the fumes can be more easily drawn into a building’s outside air intakes.

Required clearances around the generators will require additional square footage.

A generator failure incident, such as a thrown rod or a fire, is more likely to impact an adjacent generator.

Generators in Enclosures with Sub-Base Fuel Tanks

Plusses

Installation will be less expensive since this is the most common way generators are purchased by data center hyperscale and colocation customers. The trend has increased generator industry competition and innovation.

Quite often, no fuel bulk storage is required since the fuel required per generator can be stored underneath each generator. With no bulk storage, Uptime Institute Tier III and Tier IV certification is greatly simplified.

Required clearances around the generator can be achieved by opening enclosure doors/panels without requiring an extension of the building footprint.

Fuel polishing is usually done by the fuel supply vendor during regular re-fill visits.

Generators in enclosures can be stacked if there is limited site area available.

Dispersing the generator exhaust fumes is easier since the fumes can be directed into the cooling exhaust air stream or straight up.

Minuses

During a hot summer or cold winter, a cramped enclosure is less comfortable for performing maintenance (and may lead to poor maintenance) and repairs than inside a building.

It can be difficult to get 120,000 CFM air supply into a generator enclosure with a sand louver (in the desert), and a snow prevention scheme (cold climates) and may necessitate a remote radiator.

The answer to where an owner should locate electrical generators on a building site will vary for each unique situation. However, as the comparative length of the plusses and minuses categories above suggest, the design and construction risks are reduced by utilizing exterior generators in enclosures with sub-base fuel tanks. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies on exteriors can mitigate the risk of entraining combustion air into the building intakes or reducing adjacent generator capacity or HVAC cooling capacity.

The Different Types Of Solar Panels You Should Consider For Your Home

If you’ve considered adding solar panels to your home, you’ve probably also considered the amount of money and energy you could save by doing so. The potential savings is important, of course, but it isn’t the only thing to keep in mind when it comes to making the switch—you also need to decide what type of solar panels are right for you.

Because there are several types to choose from, it isn’t as easy as simply scheduling an installation appointment.

The first thing to do when figuring out which type of solar panel is right for your home is to acquaint yourself with the choices at hand as well as how many solar panels you want.

There are three main types of solar panels available for residential use. They are: monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin-film.

A fourth option, solar roofing shingles, is a newer and more expensive technology—but certainly a suitable (and enticing) choice for those with the budget to cover the initial costs.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

When you picture rooftop solar panels, you probably picture monocrystalline simply because they are very commonly used. And while all solar panels offer some

level of energy efficiency, monocrystalline is considered the most efficient of the bunch. How efficient? Up to 20%, Energy Sage reports, meaning that 20% of the sunshine that hits a monocrystalline panel is converted into usable energy. Monocrystalline panels are also:

Made of an individual pure silicon crystal (in other words, the silicon comes from one source)

Cylinder-shaped

Uniform in color

Durable and long-lasting (some come with warranties up to 30 years)

Able to generate between 300 and 400 (sometimes even more) watts of power each

The downside? Monocrystalline often requires a larger upfront investment than some other types of solar panels. This is because they are more expensive to make—a cost that, naturally, gets passed on to the consumer.

And if 20% isn’t quite efficient enough for you? No worries—under the monocrystalline umbrella falls an additional type of solar panel called the PERC (passivated emitter and rear cell). While use of this technology is still ramping up, experts say it offers even more efficiency than traditional monocrystalline panels (thanks to an added layer of silicon material on the panel’s back side) and isn’t particularly cost prohibitive to manufacture.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline panels, on the other hand, are less expensive to make and therefore less expensive for the customer. The cost difference is attributed to the manufacturing process—rather than the individual silicon crystals used to make monocrystalline, polycrystalline panels are made from many different pieces of silicon that are separated into fragments and melted together.

Polycrystalline is also somewhat less efficient than monocrystalline, producing around 250 watts of power each rather than 300-plus. Physically, though, they look similar to their monocrystalline counterparts and last almost as long (warranties are in the 25-year range, but vary by brand).

Thin-Film Solar Panels

Thin-film solar panels have a few advantages over monocrystalline and polycrystalline ones. First of all, they are comparatively lightweight. They are also malleable (the others are rigid), making them easier to install than the thicker, heavier varieties.

They are also far more affordable to manufacture than other types of solar panels and also more affordable to install.

Amorphous Silicon (a-Si) Thin-Film

Amorphous solar panels are silicon-based, like the others, but in this case, the silicone portion is just the first of three very thin layers (the second layer is heat-conductive; the top layer is protective).

Amorphous panels also do well in warmer climates because they can withstand intense heat and are more adept at generating energy on darker days (meaning the sun doesn’t have to be shining bright in a clear blue sky for them to do their job).

Unfortunately, amorphous panels don’t last as long as other types of

solar panels, you’ll only get between 10 and 20 years out of them. Furthermore, they are only around 7% efficient.

Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) Thin-Film

Cadmium telluride thin-film is the second most used solar cell type in the world after crystalline cells. However, CdTes aren’t the best in terms of efficiency,

Copper Gallium Indium Diselenide (CIGS) Thin-Film

Also produced with cadmium, Copper gallium indium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film is above-average in efficiency but is very expensive. The cells place Copper, Indium, Gallium, and Selenide layers on top of each other to efficiently convert sunlight into energy.

(PERC) Passivated Emitter and Read Cell Panels

PERC (passivated emitter and rear cell) panels are a newer type of solar technology designed to be more efficient than traditional monocrystalline panels. While this technology is still ramping up, PERC panels feature silicon material on the panel’s backside to achieve higher energy conversion efficiency. They also aren’t particularly cost-prohibitive to manufacture.

Panel Types by Efficiency

Monocrystalline solar panels are the front runner as the most efficient panels with 20% and up. Polycrystalline solar panels are a close competitor with 15% – 17% efficiency. While CIGS thin-film has 13% – 15% efficiency, CdTe thinfilm has 9% – 11% efficiency, and a-Si thin-film has 6% – 8% efficiency.

Solar Panel Types by Cost

Although monocrystalline solar panels are the most efficient, they are also the most expensive type of solar panels, with the average cost being $1 to $1.50 per watt. Polycrystalline solar panels are next in line as the most expensive, costing $0.70 to $1 per watt. While CIGS thin-film costs $0.60 to $0.70 per watt, CdTe thin-film costs $0.50 to $0.60 per watt, and a-Si thin-film is the least expensive at $0.43 to $0.50 per watt.

Most residential solar panels on today’s market are rated to produce between 250 and 400 watts per hour. Monocrystalline solar panels can generate between 320 watts and 375 watts of power capacity, while polycrystalline solar panels gen-

erate ratings between 240 watts and 300 watts. Thin-film panels don’t come in uniform sizes, so there is no standard measure of power capacity. However, thin-film solar panels have a lower power output comparatively.

One benefit of thin-film solar panels is their sleek appearance. Labeled the most attractive of the three solar panel types, the panel’s all-black thin design allows them to lie flat against roofs, so they blend in seamlessly.

Other Factors to Consider When Comparing Panel Types

In addition to efficiency, cost, power output and cost, there are several other factors to consider when determining which panel type is right for you. For instance, the weather in your area should undoubtedly be a consideration.

Hail Rating

Although most solar panels are protected by a thick layer of tempered glass that can tolerate severe impacts, a hail storm can present significant problems for your solar panels. Therefore, they are tested for hail impacts.

On average, solar panels are certified to withstand hail of up to 1 inch falling at approximately 50 mph. Monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels are ideal for areas that experience heavy hail. At the same time, thin-film solar panels are not ideal for hail since they have a thin design.

Temperature

The temperature outside can determine how efficiently solar panels generate energy. Solar panels work best at about 77°F. If the peak temperature of your solar panels gets higher than 149°F, solar panel efficiency can decline.

Fire Rating

In the event of a fire, solar panels are required to match the fire rating of the roof where they are installed to ensure they do not accelerate the spread of flames. Therefore, solar panels now carry the same fire classification rating as roofs, such as:

Class A: severe fire test exposure

Class B: moderate fire test exposure

Solar Roofing Shingles

Efficiency and price aside, some homeowners are hesitant to go solar for purely aesthetic reasons. In other words, they just don’t like the look of solar panels. If this is you, consider solar shingles.

Solar shingles allow you to get many of the benefits of solar panels without disrupting the look and feel of your roof. They are manufactured using the same technology as solar panels, and they are available at a variety of price points (depending on the brand).

Sadly, the cons are not insignificant. First and foremost, price is a huge concern—shingles are almost always more costly (especially if you go with a brand like Tesla, which launched a line of solar roofing shingles in 2019). Not only that, solar shingles are in short supply. So, even if you have the budget and the desire to add them to your roof, you might not be able to track them down.

Efficiency-wise, solar shingles are also only between 14% and 18% efficient, which isn’t bad compared to the less efficient amorphous panels but, on the lower end, doesn’t really seem all that great next to the monocrystalline ones.

Furthermore, solar shingles won’t necessarily work on every type of roof. Most are made to replace asphalt roofing tiles only (with some exceptions). The most cost-effective route? Coordinating overall roof replacement with the addition of solar shingles, which has a higher upfront cost, but is more likely to even out in the long run.

Indeed, the industry is awash with cases whereby clients have been forced to replace contractors midstream or redo whole sections. The case is different for Laxmanbhai. Challenges

While Laxmanbhai is undoubtedly a force to reckon with, it has not been an easy journey over the past seven decades. Being older than Kenya, the company has witnessed the political and socio-economic transformation of the country, and contributing at every stage in the development of the construction industry. However, factors like economic upheavals, regulatory environment changes, onset of devolved system of governance among others have brought about significant impacts not only on Laxmanbhai but across the entire building and construction industry value chain. “Economic downtowns for instance make it difficult for clients to access financing for projects and this does affect us,” notes Mr

Manji. He adds that building strong shock absorbers, coupled by years of experience, has helped Laxmanbhai weather storms and remain on top of its game.

Ready for the Future

Having grown to become one of the powerhouse contractors in Kenya, Laxmanbhai is confident of the future. The company, which is involved in many corporate social responsibility projects including school feeding programs for the needy and employee empowerment, has no intentions to sit on its laurels.
