The President said Zambia would have all her major airports upgraded to international standards, especially in view of the location of the capital city, Lusaka, which is ideal as a regional hub. Mr Sata said Government was already developing Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone into an ultra-modern facility with the rehabilitation and the construction of a passenger terminal building of a capacity of one million passengers at a cost of US$40 million. Works at the airport in the tourist capital located about 460 kilometres from Lusaka is almost complete and the commissioning of the project is scheduled for April this year. Mr Sata said the Government had released US$25 million for redevelopment of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka with a passenger terminal building of four million at a cost of US$385 million adding that the contractor is on site.

Africa’s power development efforts have received a boost following a US$350 million financing agreement between General Electric and Standard Bank, which aims to provide affordable access to power infrastructure that augments traditional large-scale grid capacity development. Inga 3 Dam handed over to private sector
Ash Resources supplies fly ash for St Helena airport project South Africa’s leading fly ash supplier, Ash Resources, over the last thirty years has successfully developed a by-product of Eskom’s coal-fired power stations to be a key component of local cement and concrete. The company also has a fine track record for the reliable delivery of its innovative fly ash products for the construction of challenging infrastructure projects regardless of size or distance. Few current projects can be as fascinating and logistically challenging as the international airport being constructed on St Helena. A remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, St Helena is halfway between Africa and South America. It acquired fame as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile from 1815 to1821. With no airport, goods have to be transported to the island on a specially chartered vessel that takes five days to travel from Cape Town. That is all about to change! To promote tourism with the aim of making the island community more self-sustainable, the British Government is funding the construction of an airport. South African contractor, Basil Read, was awarded a Design, Build and Operate contract for the project.
Davis and Shirtliff Launches Grundfos sub-factory East Africa's leading water equipment supplier, Davis and Shirtliff has launched its Grundfos sub-factory, an in-house assembly plant of the world famous Grundfos SP borehole pumps to reduce waiting time for out of stock pumps and improve market availability. "We can now assemble at least 10 pumps a day, unlike before when customers had to wait up to 16 weeks for pumps which were out of stock," said Mr Alec Davis Group CEO, during the inauguration ceremony held at the Davis and Shirtliff head offices at Industrial Area, Nairobi. "Grundfos has partnered with Davis and Shirtliff to ensure that our customers' access products within the shortest time possible while maintaining the global quality of our products," said Mr. David Githendu, Grundfos Regional General Manager. The Grundfos submersible pump will now be assembled in 2 hours at the factory, then shipped to clients in the region. The KES4 million (US$46,360) sub-factory comes at a time when Davis and Shirtliff has reported a 14 per cent rise in demand for its pumps in 2012, with the company having sold over 80,000 pumps in 2013 alone. 10
The World Bank has unexpectedly decided to develop the Inga 3 Dam in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a private investment through the International Finance Corporation, rather than as a public sector project. According to internal sources, the IFC will support a private investment in the Inga 3 Dam by Chinese companies in a deal that was brokered by the administrator of USAID. Critics have given a number of reasons as to why the World Bank move is not a smart one. Topping the list is the IFC which many critics say has a poor social and environmental track record. In recent months, the Corporation was admonished by its own ombudsperson for serious abuses in the Tata Mundra thermal power plant in India and the Dinant palm oil project in Honduras.
Transcorp to raise power plant capacity by 1,000 MW Nigeria’s Transnational Corporation (Transcorp) has partnered with General Electric (GE) to expand the capacity of Transcorp Ughelli Power’s 360 MW power plant by 1 000 MW over the next three to five years. The deal, the result of a cooperation agreement signed between the parties last year, would see the output of Nigeria’s largest gas-fired electricity generation asset rise to 700 MW by December 2014. The parties also plan to add another 115 MW to the plant’s output through the rehabilitation of the damaged GT 15 turbine. The US$300million plant was fully financed by panAfrican proprietary investment company Heirs Holdings.

Hoax architects have partly affected the architect association and this has led to loss of lives, time and money. A number of semi or non-qualified persons in the construction industry have been assigned to projects of which standards they cannot meet. This is at the level of architects, project engineers and contractors, leading to sub standard projects. The number of buildings failing in the country and killing or causing permanent damage to people is partly because some clients prefer cheap input as opposed to quality, with the aim of cutting costs. This in the end turns out to be more expensive than hiring qualified persons, because the building will have to be started all over again once it has collapsed. In contrast to the dynamic atrium, the drawing rooms placed along the facades of the building in a strict and regular sequence of columns and beams have a simple and rational design. The varied pattern of windows not only creates a strong visual effect – it also generously lets the light flow into the building and offers a breathtaking view of the Umeå River which is one of the main rivers in northern Sweden. The School of Architecture will form part of the new Arts Campus at Umeå University, which will also comprise the new Academy of Fine Arts and Art Museum – both designed by Henning Larsen Architects. The new dynamic centre of excellence is on a previous industrial plot by the north beach of Umeå River. The objective is to create an arena for education, research and entrepreneurship in architecture, design, art and digital culture. Art, research and society are brought together and will emphasise the role of Umeå as a creative centre of excellence in a global scale. It is expected that the Academy of Fine Arts and Art Museum will be ready for inauguration in 2014 where Umeå will also become the European Capital of Culture Sustainability and materials Sustainable materials have been used for the Umeå School of Architecture. The exterior facing is larch wood and, on the inside, local birch wood creates a contrast to the light walls and contributes to achieving good acoustics. The concrete floor gives an industrial and robust expression. Early on in the design process, energy calculations and daylight simulations helped to establish that the facade should consist of wood with window holes instead of only glass. This has been a key parameter in achieving a 50 percent energy reduction. Ventilation, lighting and heating functions are ingeniously integrated in the bearing structure. The air comes in under the floor and is transported to the roof of the building via the columns and beams where it is circulated round the building via perforated pipes. From South Africa to Nigeria and Kenya developers have been putting up well appointed housing estates literally overnight with home
prices topping US$1million. Golf courses as part of these estates is becoming the rule rather than the exception which can attest to the changing tastes of today's home buyers in Africa. Gone are the kitchens of days past when all that was required was a stove, pantry, fridge and sink. The discerning homemaker today as well as commercial kitchen operator wants style, quality and convenience all wrapped into one. Fitted kitchens address these demands and they are becoming the new standard Concealment One of the suppliers interviewed for this article puts it this way “The contemporary kitchen design today has two strong trends presently; concealment of the functional elements, and secondly the use of ‘furniture’ proportions and details to soften the impact on the space. Even in Africa where temperatures are normally modest, vital equipment in places like hospitals require chillers in order to operate correctly. Other places where they find use is in hotels and industrial facilities. In today’s energy conscious world, chillers need to meet much higher energy efficiency levels as well as environmental demands in order to pass the bar. This has promoted greater innovations designed to give a greater bang for the buck. One such innovation has been with water cooled chillers for instance. These are taking over from air cooled ones because they take up less space, ling effects. However different applications will require different types of chillers so never think that one size will fit all. When looking for an industrial chiller look at the total life cycle cost, the power source and capacity noise levels. VRF: Latest design on the market Air conditioning systems industry has evolved over the years since ancient Rome, when the first system was developed- when aqueduct water was circulated within the walls of luxurious Roman estates to keep them cool, with the first modern air conditioning system developed in 1902 in order to reduce humidity problem. Since then, every air conditioning system is designed to provide comfort in homes, restaurants, trains, ships, hospitals, etc., and also to relieve discomfort of allergies by
removing pollen from air, and helping to preserve the health of patients in hospitals. In business and industry, air conditioning systems are designed to improve the efficiency of workers, ensuring uniformity in metal work and to prevent too much or too little moisture from damaging f r a g i l e

In more advanced versions(Heat Recovery), the indoor units may operate in heating or cooling mode independently of others, offering energy savings when heating and cooling are required simultaneously in different zones. Most manufacturers the world over have taken the VRF route because of its energy efficient technologies and its environmental friendliness. This is due to the system’s ability to speed up and slow down according to the load required in the building space and thus providing precise temperature control, explains Kevin Baker, National Sales Manager from Hisense VRF. compact, space saving and offer flexibility to install without needing cranes to move condensers, because they come in modules that can be carried through the elevator/ lift to the roof of the building. rk Construction Limited was founded in 2009 by Mr Kurji Kalyan Kerai and Mr Narendrabhai B. Patel. New commercial building for All Parts Holdings Ltd on Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi This involved demolition of an existing building. The biggest challenge faced during this project was the fact that Ark Construction had to pull down an existing building consisting of a multi-storied shopping mall. It involved working in enclosed spaces as the site was surrounded by other buildings. Being in the Central Business District, traffic was a major problem and delivery of materials was challenged by both human and vehicular traffic congestion. Ark Construction also had to ensure that surrounding businesses experienced no disruption to their activities as the work went on. Residential house, Lakeview, General Mathenge, Gigiri In this project, Ark Construction was tasked with taking down old buildings in order to replace them with new and improved ones. Notable challenges in this project were unfavourable weather (which caused significant project delays and negatively impacted cashflows) and unstable prices of key materials such as steel and concrete.

This particular project was also a potential safety hazard for the company’s workers. Availability of credit As far as Ark Construction is concerned, availability of credit is not as issue for the company. “We have a very good reputation with all our suppliers and sub-contractors. Our payments are made on time and this garnered us a very good reputation with potential suppliers. Most of the materials we buy are on credit from our supplier unless we need something urgently from a supplier we have not done business with, and then we obviously need to pay in cash or cheque”. Quality of training Mr Kerai sees a clear lack of quality training in the construction industry in general. “The quality of projects and finishing we see in general is not up to international standards and health and safety regulations are not as strictly adhered to”, he observes. He adds that although the government is trying its best to bring in measures to make sure there is maximum compliance, it may take a couple of years before change can be seen.

Future So where is Ark Construction headed? “We are quietly optimistic in our ambitions for this company”, says Mr Kerai. “I believe that with our unique selling point of providing high quality services to our clients and meeting tight deadlines has helped us maintain good rapport with will all the consultants we have worked with. We are regarded as one of the best in terms of delivery and quality by most high profile consultants and this has enabled us to be a leading contractor for several banks and multinational companies as mentioned in the projects above.” Mr Kerai says although Ark Construction’s core business at the moment is interior fit-out, the company has recently undertaken several civil and general construction projects and is expecting to undertake more civil and construction projects. It hopes to become the market leader in both interior fit-out and general construction.

Ark Construction’s Perspectives on the Industry in Kenya Business climate According to the company’s Senior Project Manager Mr Bharat Kerai, the construction sector in the last seven years has been booming. As a result, there has been an influx of international companies especially from China, hence driving up competition and bringing down prices. However, although at the moment the impact is not being felt significantly owing to the huge market, Mr Kerai predicts that the situation may not remain the same. “I feel that in the long run this might hurt the budding entrepreneur who will not be able to compete with cut throat prices unless he has the financial muscle and goodwill in the market”, he says.

renchless Technologies has been in existence for more than two decades, and was specifically formed to cater for the growing need for non-
disruptive, cost effective solutions to pipe laying problems in South Africa.Trenchless technologies is a 70percent BEE owned company with

directional drilling, horizontal boring, pipe ramming and microtunnelling for new pipeline installations, pipe
bursting, pipe reaming, sliplining, Sekesui(RibLoc)SpiralWound piping, CIPP/ softlining fo rexisting pipeline replacement and rehabilitation as well as CCTV pipeline inspection. The continued growth of the organisation can be attributed to the fact that it immediately filled a need in the market for boring small diameter holes beneath the roadway to install electrical conduits and water piping, using earth piercing or moling tools and pipe ramming. horizontal directional drilling (HDD) industry to continue to grow in tandem with the fibre optic network roll-out, and this is expected to continue for several years with the “last mile” and fibre to the home and business.

range of percussive hammers from 65 to 210 diameter, which allowed the company to undertake a full range of horizontal boring for pipes from 25 to 160 mm, pipe bursting from 110 to 315 mm as well as pipe ramming up to 400 mm. “We made good progress in pipe bursting for various municipalities that could see the benefit of not digging up their streets and pavements as well as the cost savings achieved, and our main focus for many years remained pipe bursting”, explained Sam Efrat, Managing Director for Trenchless Technologies. As technology continued to improve, Trenchless Technologies became more versatile, offering a wider range of more tailor-made solutions. In 1997, the company acquired their first horizontal directional drills, followed in 2004 with the undertaking of the first cured in-place pipe (CIPP) project. In 2006 the company acquired the SPR EX (Expanda) and SPR PE (Ribline)technologies, and in 2011 the SPE RO (Rotoloc) spiral wound piping technology.The company is currently looking at fold and form and epoxy lining solutions to further expand its range of services, explains Efrat. Trenchless Technologies has managed a sustained continued growth since inception and according to Efrat, “We experienced an average 20 percent year-on-year growth and expect this trend to continue, fuelled by the impending investment in water infrastructure needed to secure Southern Africa’s water resources, as well as the continued fibre optic network roll-outs”. In addition, the company expects the trenchless rehabilitation market to grow from a R500 million per year industry toR5 billion per year, as well as anticipating the
In 2012 the company was awarded the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISITT) annual project award, for its ‘Port Elizabeth Goes Trenchless project’ which was nominated from 27 affiliated trenchless societies worldwide. The Port Elizabeth project entailed the rehabilitation of two parallel sewers located in the central business district (CBD), which was originally designed to use only the spiral wound technique throughout, however the site conditions required the additional use of CIPP and pipe bursting at certain locations. “The project is an excellent example of using trenchless technology options to address unexpected site conditions, allowing the project to be completed successfully without excavation and surface disruption”, stated Efrat. The

company made use of several trenchless techniques to overcome the challenges posed by the project, which included spiral wound pipe expansion to a close fit (both SPR EX and SPR RO technologies), spiral wound pipe grouting in-place (SPR PE), ambient CIPP, UV CIPP and pipe bursting to successfully complete the project. The ABSA Bank Energy Centre Sleeves Reticulation project has been the most challenging and interesting for Trenchless Technologies, adds Efrat. The project required the installation of 85 sleeves using HDPE pipe from 110 to 710 mm, up to 16 m deep beneath roadways, to connect several of ABSA Bank’s CBD buildings with gas, electricity, fibre optic, chilled and hot water. According to Efrat, a number challenges were encountered during the undertaking of the ABSA Bank Energy Centre Sleeves Reticulation project. Though they were not insurmountable they included the following: The basement floors that were to designed to support the weight of a typical sedan vehiclenecessitated propping from the floor below to add support to all areas over which the HDD drill South Africa
needed to travel to get to the required position within basements. A floor to floor height restriction, requiring that all equipment be less than 2.1 m in height- leading to the Terra-jet being refitted by removing the operator cabin, rebuilding the hydraulic tank, as well as lowering the encapsulation body work. In addition, 65 installations took place in clay, while the remaining 20 were in rock, and this necessitated the use of percussive hammer and rock reamers to expand the holes to the required diameters. Other challenges involved drilling through lateral support ground anchors which were encountered during drilling in dozens of locations. In order to gain access to the drill face coring to remove concrete, lateral walls from 300 to 500 mm thick were also required. Trenchless Technologies has become a trendsetter in the trenchless technology industry and in the past 20 years, the company has successfully completed hundreds of contracts, and achieved a number of awards which included the 2000 SAICE Pretoria Branch Award for Technical Excellence, 2007 (SASTT) Award of Excellence for the Rehabilitation of Sewer Pipes in Klipspruit Basin, together with Johannesburg Water and consultant Vela VKE, 2009 (SASTT) Award of Excellence for the ABSA Bank Energy Centre Sleeves Reticulation project, 2010 CIDB Construction Summit Award for outstanding performance in South Africa’s construction industry, and 2012 (ISTT) International Project Award for the rehabilitation of two parallel sewer pipes in Port Elizabeth’s CBD. 42

Greefspan Solar and Herbert Solar Parks Renewable Energy Projects 33-Megawatts of clean and reliable energy to be added to the national grid
T
he South African government’s Independent Power Producers procurement (IPP) program has resulted in the construction of the Greefspan and Herbert Solar Parks situated near Douglas, Northern Province, South Africa. The construction of the two renewable energy projects owned by AE- AMD Renewable Energy in partnership with the IDEAS Fund, an infrastructure fund managed by Old Mutual Investment Group of South Africa, commenced with Herbert Solar Park in December 2012, followed with Greefspan Solar Park in January 2013. Both projects are set to be handed over to AEAMD in April 2014. SunPower acted as AE-AMD Renewable Energy’s Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) partner for both projects.These are jointly sitting on 167 hectares of land and entail ground-mounted

solar systems featuring 137,862 photovoltaic solar panels on single-axis trackers. The trackers are programmed to follow the sun throughout the day, ensuring that maximum amount of power is being generated. Herbert Solar Park is set to produce 22 MW, and as of early February, 19 MW had been generated, and the plant has already exported 9 GWh to the national grid (Eskom). In addition, Greefspan Solar Park is set to produce 11 MW. Besides designing and manufacturing solar panels and systems, SunPower also has a successful track record of building solar power plants around the world. The company’s global track record includes recent achievements such as the California Valley Solar Ranch, a 250 MW project in California. In addition, construction is ongoing on the largest solar plant development in the March 2014
world, Solar Star, a 579 MW plant. Once completed, it will generate enough energy to power 400,000 homes. “SunPower is taking a long-term view on the promising South African PV market. Following the completion of this project, the team will get ready to kick off the execution of an even larger installation in the Prieska municipality later this year.” said Mario Riello, Managing Director, Utility Power Plant Sales, EMEA and India. SunPower will provide Engineering, Procurement and Construction, as well as Operations and Maintenance for a 75MW ground-mounted solar power project in Prieska. SunPower majority shareholder, Total along with their partners, MuliloSolar Enterprises (PTY) Ltd were selected as preferred bidders for this project by South Africa’s Department of Energy in the third round of their Independent Power Producers procurement program. SunPower has worked closely with the local municipality to ensure employment opportunities for the community, not only during the construction, but also for the lifetime of the Herbert and Greefspan projects as part of the operations and maintenance plan. Since breaking ground, the projects have generated more than 300 jobs in the local community, including the hiring of local contractors. Security measures have been implemented in the form of an electric fence that has been erected to protect both plants, with an anti-burrow feature specifically designed to protect small animals. The site also has 24 hour security and night vision cameras.

Multi-Billion Durban Port Expansion on Schedule will include the expansion of the Durban port and its container terminals, comprising of several individual work packages, aimed at increasing the DCT’s container handling capacity. In addition, the main projects entail the expansion of the DCT Pier 1, which is set to increase the capacity of the terminal from 700 00 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 820 000 TEUs by 2013 and eventually to 1.2 million TEUs in 2016/17. The North quay at DCT Pier 2 extension will result in the increase of the capacity from 2.1 million TEUs in 2011/12 to 2.5 million TEUs by 2013/14 and to 3.3

ransnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), one of five operating divisions of Transnet SOC Ltd has embarked on the upgrade and expansion of the Durban Port in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. The Durban Container Terminal (DCT) is the biggest and busiest in the Southern Hemisphere and currently handles 64 percent of the country’s seaborne container traffic. Each year, more than 4000 commercial; vessels call at Durban and according to forecasts, container traffic is growing at 8 percent a year. The current yearly volume of container trade through Durban is 2.69 million 20 foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo, which is expected to grow to between nine million and 12 million TEU by 2040. The new port situated in the Prospection/ Isipingo industrial area will consist of sixteen berth container terminal, which forms part of the initial five-year R110.5 billion capital expenditure programme until 2015/16 and the group’s larger R300 billion seven year Market Demand Strategy (MDS) until 2018/19. The scope of the ambitious multi-billion expansion project

Other terminals such as the Durban Ro-Ro and Maydon Wharf terminals will see the creation of the container capacity, through the acquisition of new equipment, including mobile cranes and various infrastructure upgrades. The project to complete will require enormous resources in materials, plant and personnel. The Department of Public Works has estimated that the project would create approximately 64 000 construction jobs and 28 000 operational jobs. The project has created joint ventures by major construction and civil engineering companies and this set to filter down and the SMMEs involved in the construction industry will be drawn in to complete small sections of the project. In addition, 70 million cubic metres of material is to be dredged, 3.5 million tonnes of rock to be brought in, while 2.5 million cubic metres of cement will be utilised, 52 000 tonnes of reinforcing steel to be used and 14. 5 million cubic metres of earth works.
