Bamburi Cement Launches Tile Adhesive Leading cement manufacturer Bamburi Cement has entered the specialized mortar market with its launch of Bamburi TectorCeram SETI 300, a ready-to-use tile adhesive. Designed for placement of porous tiles including ceramic, terracotta, earthenware and natural stone tiles, Bamburi TectorCeram SETI 300 is a cementitious mortar product produced from carefully sourced raw materials, including chemical admixtures, cement and sand. “We are delighted to tap into the growing demand for specialty mortar products such as tile adhesives”, said Seddiq Hassani, Bamburi Cement Managing Director. “As a champion for innovation in construction, Bamburi Cement is well-positioned to develop and present yet another construction solution to resolve challenges in the tiling sector.”
It is made to operate in standby mode, taking on its role when there is a failure of the regular electrical grid and whenever the photovoltaic panels on the site, which work in parallel with the grid for self-consumption, are disconnected. Grupel is a Portuguese company, founded in 1976, that produces and sells portable and stationary power generators up to 3500kVA, as well as portable lighting towers. The new tile adhesive is suitable for interior tiling solutions such as floors and walls and only requires the addition of water on site. Mecalac Launches Trio of new Swing Loaders Mecalac, a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of compact equipment for urban construction sites has launched the all-new AS750, AS850 and AS1000 models join the existing AS600, AS900tele, AS1600 and AS210. Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project
T
he Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline ("NMGP") is a proposed regional onshore and offshore gas pipeline that is intended to deliver natural gas resources from Nigeria to 13 countries in the West and North Africa as a continuation of the existing West Africa Gas Pipeline ("WAGP") between Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana. Starting from Nigeria, the 5,660 kilometres long NMGP will pass through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea6
Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania, to end at Tangiers, a Moroccan port on the Strait of Gibraltar, with a possible extension to Europe through Spain. The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project is estimated to cost US$ 25bn and it will be completed in stages over 25 years.

The project falls in line with the “Decade of Gas Master Plan” that Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari launched in 2020. The master plan seeks to bolster Nigeria’s gas production and gas exports. On the Moroccan side, this landmark project is part of the South-South cooperation upheld by King Mohammed VI. It is expected to create a competitive regional power market and benefit all West African people, countries, and their economies.

Worley's offshore engineering consultant subsidiary, Intecsea, situated in The Hague, Netherlands, will be in charge of the entire FEED services which the development of a project implementation framework as well as engineering survey monitoring.
As regards funding the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) agreed to fund 50% of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) Study for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project. The multilateral development finance institution focused on Islamic finance will support the Moroccan contribution and participate in the financing of the project with US$ 15.4M under the “Service Ijara” operation. For Nigeria, the IsDB will contribute US$ 29.7M to the FEED study which aims at preparing the required studies for the gas pipeline and help take the final investment decision by 2023 for the infrastructure project. The IsDB funding will help carry out the environment & social impact study in order to ensure the project's compliance with all local and international environmental and social regulations and standards. It will also finance land acquisition studies for agreeing with all countries to be crossed by the pipeline to ensure smooth implementation of the works at a later stage. OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) is also reportedly set to contribute US$ 14.3M to fund the implementation of the second phase of the NMGP (Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline) project's Front End Engineering Study (FEED). This is after the intergovernmental development finance institution established back in 1976 by the Member States of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, signed a financing agreement with Morocco. With this agreement, OPEC Fund strengthens its financial cooperation links with Morocco and contributes to the Kingdom's economic and social dynamics by supporting the NMGP (Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline) project, which is an example of South-South collaboration. The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline is expected to improve access to energy across the West Africa region. This will help address one of the region's most significant barriers to development, which is the lack of affordable energy, and consequently facilitate the expansion of sectors ranging from industry to food processing and fertilizers, and improve the competitiveness of exports amongst the African countries. In addition, the project will strengthen energy exports to Europe.

eThekwini Gears Up for the Durban Eye Project
T
he R450 million Durban Eye project has been defended by Ethekwini Municipality, which claims it would be part of the municipality's economic infrastructure, attracting visitors, stimulating economic growth, and creating employment. During the week of the city's Travel Indaba, it was revealed that a multimillion-rand project would be erected in Durban. The city already boasts a number of tourist attractions, including uShaka Marine World, which is owned by the city. Residents in Durban have criticised the proposal since it was announced, calling it a vanity project. The Durban Eye project, on the other hand, is a private venture, with the municipality just donating land for the project's construction. It entails constructing and installing a massive Ferris wheel on Vetch's Beach in the Point Waterfront zone, which will run along the northern breakwaters. Development of the Durban Eye Project The R450 million Durban Eye developer has been chosen, and construction is set to begin in July. Once finished, this project will pro-

vide tourists with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic perspective of the city. Msawakhe Mayisela, a municipality spokeswoman, said that this was a city initiative in terms of making the site accessible to the now pre-qualified bidder, who will invest in the facility's design, development, construction, operation, and management at no cost to the municipality. According to the city, the northern breakwater was chosen to be the most suitable and appealing backdrop for the proposed investment following months of site investigation and appraisal. The Durban Eye project, according to Mayisela, would produce cash for the city through rents, with annual inflation-linked escalations over the projected 30-year term, after which the municipality would acquire the asset and any building modifications. Mayisela said the city had received two unsolicited inquiries, one from an overseas business and the other from a local consortium with foreign partners, about the leasing of council-owned land obtained between 2018 and 2020.

Nairobi Expressway: First Expressway in East and Central Africa
T
he Nairobi Expressway Project is a 27.1km road project beginning from Mlolongo through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Nairobi’s CBD to Westland’s area along Waiyaki Way. The over Ksh 60 billion road project is the first major project in the Kenya to be carried out through a PPP model and the first Expressway in East and Central Africa. The project broke ground in October 2019 with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) as the contractor. CRBC is responsible for the design, financing, and construction of the road under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. The company will also operate the road for about 27 years so as to recoup its investment through the collection of road tolls. The project The Nairobi Expressway includes a four-lane and six-lane dual carriageway within the existing median of Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way as well as 10 interchanges. The section between the Eastern and Southern bypasses will is a six-lane dual carriageway while the section from to the Eastern Bypass and that from the Southern Bypass to James Gichuru is a four-lane dual carriageway.

The elevated highway begins near Ole Sereni Hotel and run through the CBD along the Uhuru highway up to the James Gichuru junction. Haile Selassie Road, Kenyatta Avenue, and University Way are below the elevated road. How the expressway will operate Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), will operate the road for 27 years to recoup the construction funds through toll fees. The company has provided safety tips to ensure the expressway runs smoothly. Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway will be required to move at a speed of 80km/h once opened to the public. Taking U-turns and reversals is prohibited on the expressway, with motorists who miss the planned exit required to proceed to the next toll station to exit. Several activities have also been prohibited on the expressway, including graffiti and scribbling on expressway property and setting up billboards without prior authorization Stealing and damaging properties as well as construction without permission is also not allowed. Rearing and herding livestock on and along expressway as well as setting up stalls, parking, dumping waste and blocking ditches under the bridge are prohibited. Toll Stations There are a total of 11 toll stations and 27 toll plazas. The toll plazas comprise the entrance and exit routes while the stations encompass the two. Nairobi West It consists of one toll station that serves as both the entrance and exit route. Motorists can access the station through Waiyaki Way, Westlands as well as exit to ABC Place and St Austin Catholic Church. Westlands The facility consists of one plaza that serves as an entrance from The Mall, opposite the One Africa Place Building. There is no exit point. Museum Hill Museum Hill consists of three plazas that con-
sist of an exit route to the University of Nairobi (UoN) main campus as well as an entrance point for motorists plying the Thika Superhighway. The exit route joining the Thika Superhighway will not be open to the public. Haile Selassie The Haile Selassie route has three plazas (Two entry points and an exit) whereby motorists can either join or exit the road from the Bunyala roundabout. This enables easier access to Upper Hill. Further, an entry point is placed from the Central Business District (CBD). Capital Center Along the Mombasa road stretch, motorists can join the road from two entry points; CID and Tata Motors. Along the stations are two exit routes; one heading to South B and the other to South C along Bellevue. Southern Bypass Motorists can access the road via an entry point at NextGen Mall as well as Airtel near the Southern bypass/Mombasa road interchange. Drivers can exit the expressway through two main points; heading to Likoni Road and to DTB Bank.
This consists of two toll stations and four plazas: One station serves as an entrance from Cabanas Bus Stop and exit to Outering Road. The second station serves as an entrance from Saj Ceramics and exit to Nairobi Expressway Plaza JKIA (Two plazas; entry and exit point) Those using the Expressway to access the airport can use the road's exit point. How convenient is your concrete mixer?

any contractors always find it advantageous to have their own concrete mixer as opposed to depending on outside vendors and if you are a new entrant to the construction industry it is an investment worth making. While weighing on whether to call on ready-mix concrete delivery or owning your own mixers, many factors should be weighed. These include among others, job scope, the location of the site, size and quality of staff and the time frame attached to the project. For instance, it is counterproductive for a contractor to use a portable concrete mixer when he needs to pour a slab of 50 square metres. He is much better served using readymix. Similarly, if a job needs to be completed in an hour so contractors can move on to the next job, ready-mix is a smarter choice. Nevertheless, according to Stefano Tognoloni of Concrete Mixers s.r.l in Italy, your mixer of choice should ensure very high reliability, independence, and flexibility in working time. In-transit Mixers In-transit mixers are made to transport and mix concrete up to the construction site. They can be charged with dry materials and water, with the mixing occurring during transport. They can also be loaded from a ‘central mix’ plant, with this process the material has already been mixed prior to loading. The concrete mixing transport truck maintains the material's liquid state through agitation, or turning of the drum, until delivery. The interior of the drum on a concrete mixing truck is fitted with a spiral blade. In one rotational direction, the concrete is pushed deeper into the drum. This is the direction the drum is rotated while the concrete is being transported to the building site. This is known as ‘charging’ the mixer. When the drum rotates in the other direction, the Archimedes' screw-type arrangement ‘discharges’ the concrete out of the drum. From there it may go onto chutes to guide the viscous 34

concrete directly to the job site. If the truck cannot get close enough to the site to use the chutes, the concrete may be discharged into a concrete pump, connected to a flexible hose, or onto a conveyor belt which can be extended some distance (normally ten or more metres). A pump provides the means to move the material to precise locations, multi-floor buildings, and other distance prohibitive locations. Buckets suspended from cranes are also used to place the concrete. The drum is traditionally made of steel but on some newer trucks as a weight reduction measure, fibreglass has been used. Advantages The biggest advantage of transit mixers is that these do not allow segregation of concrete because of continuous rotation. Unloading of concrete batch can be done at will in full or partially. According to Brett Fillmore of ProAll Reimer Mixers in Canada, modern job site characteristics cause great challenges for traditional concrete delivery methods. However, having a concrete mixer onsite means concrete is mixed fresh no matter where you are. There is no wait time, and materials are mixed only when you need them. Drum of concrete mixer does not allow any foreign material to enter the concrete load. Concrete can be unloaded to a conveyor belt, a concrete pump or into the chutes. As the capacity of available transit mixers varies from 4 cubic metres to 12 cubic metres, choice is available as per site requirements and concrete production rate. Portable Mixers The smaller models which are normally available in sizes ranging from 3 to 12 cubic feet; will fit in the trunk of most cars, while the larger capacity units can be towed easily on wheels or hoisted onto a truck for longer distances. With their small size and easy portability they can be used even in remote areas that characterize most African settings. Advantages The biggest advantage in owning a portable mixer is realized when working on sidewalks, foundations and binding block, and when preparing mortar bases. Mixers also have speed controls that can be adjusted to fit the requirements of the specific job. Most manufacturers offer steel and polyethylene drums to fit individual user preferences. Steel drums are more durable, but cleaning can often be tedious and other damage to the drum is a possibility. Poly drums, which resist rust, can be cleaned in minutes by simply tapping with a rubber mallet and they are lighter than their steel counterpart. Choosing you mixer The nature and volume of work is a factor to consider in choosing the right mixer. Big-scale construction projects require bulk concrete mixers which can mix large quantities of concrete both onsite and offsite. For small scale projects, smaller mixers can apply. The size of construction site is a major factor to consider. Remember smaller mixers can fit well in squeezed sites while large open sites can comfortably accommodate the bigger ones.
