Growing at an average rate of 6.1 percent, Africa is the 3rd fastest growing region in the world in terms of international traffic. Not only is demand for intra-African passenger and cargo traffic on the rise but there is also an increase in demand for Africa as a preferred partner in global trade. This has seen the continent‘s airports becoming congested. Although Africa continues to host some of the fastest growing economies in the world, spurred by strong GDP growth in local economies, air traffic can only expand within the existing confines of infrastructure capacities at African airports. Lack of a dynamic and systematic transportation mode interconnecting African countries is impeding the continent’s economic potential.

In the 2013 World Airport Awards ceremony held in Geneva, only 3 African airports, all in South Africa, ranked amongst the top 100 airports in the world. Construction of US$40.3million Orange Farm Mall starts Construction on the new R400-million (US$40.3million) Eyethu Orange Farm Mall has started, with the development poised to be a major catalyst for the greater Sebokeng area, south of Johannesburg. The mall is scheduled to open for trade in September 2014 and will provide more than 400,000 Orange Farm and Evaton community members with shopping facilities close to home. With major retailers already having been secured for the 27,000 m2 mall and transport infrastructure upgrades under way, the regional mall development, with expansion rights of up to 35,000 m2 gross lettable area (GLA), is on track to form the core of Orange Farm’s new central business district. Investors in the project include JSE-listed property loan stock company Dipula Income Fund, project developers Flanagan & Gerard and Stretford Land Developments (SDL), each with a 30percent stake in the project.
The remaining 10 percent stake has been designated to the Orange Farm Community Trust, which will be funded by the three listed partners, in The mall is scheduled to open for trade in September 2014 and will provide more than 400,000 Orange Farm and Evaton community members with collaboration with Standard Bank, on a pro rata basis. The Eyethu Orange shopping facilities close to home. Farm Mall has been identified as a Presidential project and is, therefore, supported by the City of Johannesburg as a community upliftment initiative.
Ghana
Biggest interchange in West Africa nears completion The construction of Ghana's biggest interchange at Sofoline in Kumasi may have suffered delays, but the project has not only eased traffic to a great extent in that part of the city but also positively changed the face of the Garden City. The interchange, which forms part of the reconstruction of the Sunyani road through Kumasi, is now about 92 per cent complete and has partially been opened to traffic, thereby reducing the congestion associated with that part of Kumasi, which connects to Obuasi, Sunyani and the city centre.The road, one of the most congested in Kumasi, is undergoing dualisation and asphalting.
According to the resident engineer of the project, Mr. Ato Badu Prah, work left to be done on the interchange included street lighting, road marking, fixing of road signs and landscaping works, which would be completed by the end of the year.The road project has been divided into three parts -- the section The interchange, which forms part of the reconstruction of the Sunyani road from Abuakwa to the Apatrapa Junction; the Apatrapa Junction to the Bekwai through Kumasi, is now about 92 percent complete and has partially been Roundabout and the Bekwai Roundabout to the Komfo Anokye Teaching opened to traffic. Djibouti
Djibouti’s US$4.5 billion railway project launched Ethiopia’s, Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn and Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh have launched construction of the new Nagad Railway Station. Construction of the station, which will form part of the 800km Addis Ababa - Dewele - Djibouti route, was also inaugurated in the presence of Ethiopia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tedros Adhanom. Following the groundbreaking, Prime Minister Hailemariam stated that the railway will have a significant impact on the region, namely in bolstering regional economic integration. Similarly, President Guelleh said the infrastructure will advance economic cooperation and social connections between the two sisterly countries. Both leaders described the occasion as a historic day for the region.

On his part, Dr. Tedros explained that the US$4.5 billion railway project exemplifies Ethiopia's foreign policy which aims to fight poverty and build a prosperous nation and region. FG awards US$1.8billion road contract

The Nigeria government has awarded a contract of over N300 billion (US$1.8billion) to Chinese construction companies for the extension of the Keffi/Lafia dual carriage way through Markurdi to Oturkpo, up to Ninth Mile in Enugu. Accordingly, the federal government also concluded arrangement for the completion of the east west road project extension from Oron down to Calabar in Cross River State which is to be executed through external funding from the Chinese Export and Import Bank. Addressing the press, Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen and his Niger Delta counterpart, Elder Godsday Orubebe said the government has engaged with China Harbour Company which is interested in investing in the building of road infrastructures in the country on direct funding through the public private partnership opportunities made available by the federal government. Onolememen said all was set for them to meet with the Chinese Exim bank, having completed all documentation and once an agreement was reached, the project will come on stream soon in Nigeria. The minister explained that the project will help to provide better access to that flank of the country especially between the north central and the south eastern part of the nation.

The European Union and European Investment Bank will inject Ush208billion (US$80.2million) in increasing the number of lanes on the Kampala Northern Bypass and Construction of flyovers .The proposed new Ntinda junction on Kampala Northern Bypass is expected to commence this year. The lighting will be improved on in the new design and construction of dual carriage which is expected to join the Entebbe Express Highway which is already under construction. Both roads will be joined by an intricate flyover interchange at Kyegera on Masaka road. The expansion will take three years to be completed. The Kampala Northern Bypass is intended to decongest Kampala City by diverting transit trucks heading to western Uganda, Rwanda and eastern D.R Congo. This project is funded by European Union & Government of Uganda. The first phase of the Kampala Northern Bypass Highway which started in 2004, opened to traffic on 1st October, 2009. It is the first dual carriageway highway in Uganda. The second phase will involve removal of roundabouts and replacing them with flyovers to improve traffic flow.

Tanzania’s National stadium Complex completed

Tanzanian sports fans are thrilled as China officially hands over Phase One of the National Stadium Complex in Dar es Salaam to the government after seven years of construction of the massive project. Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Lu Youqing and Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Sihaba Mkinga signed and exchanged handover certificates during a brief ceremony held at the venue recently. The management of the state-of-the-art stadium is now wholly under the Tanzania government and the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports. The Tanzanian government expressed sincere gratitude to the government of China for playing a key role in financing, construction and management of the stadium. The modern structure is meant to be a motivational factor for sports to grow in the country and attract the attention of the world as many international events will be staged in Tanzania. Chances are high for the Chinese government to finance and carry out the planned phase II project, which will among others include an indoor stadium, warm-up ground, sports village/college and other related facilities. The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Ghana The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Ghana, has instituted the Construction Manager of the Year Award. A statement from CIOB said the winner of the maiden award will be announced during this year’s Property Excellence Awards in October. The prestigious award, a premier event within the UK construction industry for over 30 years is now being replicated in Ghana. The award is to recognise individual site based managers of a construction company with overall responsibility for final delivery of a project. The awards will be judged by corporate members of CIOB with specialist knowledge of the management of construction projects. The statement said applicants, however, do not have to be members of the Institute and can come from companies of all sizes.

CIOB Ghana said transparent and rigorous criteria will be used in the selection process, which will analyse the skills and qualities exhibited by the professionals from Pre-contract phase to the Project Closeout. CIOB Ghana is replicating this award as part of efforts to promote professionalism in the industry. This is in response to the myriad of problems in the construction industry, including the concern about shoddy works and the collapse of both completed buildings as well as buildings under construction and improperly constructed roads and drains.

CAT’s Technology to detect if drivers are fatigued or sleeping CAT is developing new technology that will detect if its machinery drivers are becoming tired or sleeping on the job, in an attempt to curtail workplace accidents. The eye and face tracking technology will also be made available to other construction and mining equipment manufacturers. An Australian company called Seeing Machines is designing the equipment, which is hoped to combat accidents due to fatigue in drivers, a concern that is very common in the mining and construction industries, according to a report from CAT. The system inside the vehicle includes a small computer, a GPS, camera and two infrared light sources that monitor the driver’s facial movements and specifically the movements of the eyes and eyelids to detect whether or not they are becoming tired or drowsy. If the driver’s eye closes for too long, somewhere over a second and a half is considered too long, the sensor will set off an alarm inside the cab of the vehicle and the seat will vibrate to awake and alert the driver of their fatigue. Mtwara Gas Plant project starts Largest solar PV system in US$38million Nacala corridor contract awarded to Kentz Southern Africa installed

The 912 km railway corridor project would provide a logistics solution for the transportation of coal mined at Moatize.
Work towards constructing the 600MW gas fired power plant and a 650 km transmission line in Mtwara has started. The project is a publicprivate partnership involving Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco), Symbion Power and General Electric.
The Black River Office Park in Observatory, Cape Town is in the process of installing the largest roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system in Southern Africa. Once completed, the entire operation will generate around 1.9 gigawatt (1.9 million kilowatt) hours annually, enough energy to power 1000 average sized houses. Phase one of the installation, currently being completed, is already bigger than any other power system of a similar nature in Southern Africa.
Corredor Logistico Integrado de Nacala (CLIN) has awarded Kentz Engineers and Constructors the US$38million contract to build the Nacala corridor project, in northern Mozambique. CLIN is a joint venture between Vale Moçambique and Mozambique’s port and railways authority, Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique.
Symbion Power CEO, Paul Hinks, said they have already started doing study work and equipment selection for the project in Mtwara and expect to start construction in January, next year. The project will see the building of a gas driven electricity plant in Mtwara to ease power shortages in the south of the country and elsewhere. Tanzania estimates it has 41.7 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of recoverable natural gas reserves but little of it pumped out, while economic growth remains constrained by chronic energy shortages that result in frequent power blackouts. The proposed power plant, to be built in southern Tanzania's Mtwara region, will also include a transmission line to Songea, a city several hundred kilometres away near Lake Malawi.
By the time the second phase is installed at the end of this year, it will be double the size, in addition to being one of the most technologically advanced systems in the world. The first phase will see 2,875 panels installed, and a further 2,050 panels being installed in phase two, with the entire system covering an area of 8,000m2 ,larger than the size of a rugby field. The office park houses 5,500 offices workers over a 76,000m2 area, approximately equivalent to the Grade A office space in Claremont. The scale of the solar panel system will generate enough for tenants to significantly power their operations through green energy.
Construction Starts on Nairobi’s tallest office tower
The 912 km railway corridor project would provide a logistics solution for the transportation of coal mined at Moatize, in the Tete province, to the maritime terminal in Nacala. Kentz Engineers and Constructors had been contracted to undertake the structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation erection and to provide commissioning assistance required to build the main stockyard equipment. It would also erect 13 km of interconnecting belt conveyors, as well as assemble and install about 14,000 t of equipment, including tipplers, stackers, reclaimers and shiploaders. The contract was scheduled for completion in November next year. Kentz regional MD for Africa, Carl Dyer, said with the award of this important project, Kentz is delighted to continue the relationship with Vale in Mozambique.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has officially kicked off construction works to for the 39 storey Hazina Trade Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. The tower will be constructed atop the existing eight-storey Hazina Trade Centre building that currently houses the Nakumatt Lifestyle Hypermarket store on Nairobi's Monrovia and Mokhtar Daddah Streets. The construction works on the building architecturally designed by local consultant's Mruttu & Salmann Associates will be, undertaken by China Jiangxi International Kenya Limited- a locally incorporated international construction firm. The new Hazina Trade Centre will not only transform the skyline of Nairobi City but also act as Kenya's Wall Street complex housing global financial services providers. Speaking during the ceremony, Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi said the project has set the stage for NSSF's strategic efforts to diversify their investment portfolio to cover high impact investment projects. He said the fund will focus on high impact investments that guarantee a high return in the energy and infrastructural development sectors. Profits and returns on investment accruing from this project will in turn be ploughed back to the fund. NSSF hopes to generate rental income of Ksh100 million (US$1.1million). 8

Nigeria-based Dangote Cement is planning to enter the Kenyan market .The company wants to buy a cement firm in Kenya and has already sent emissaries to look at Mombasa Cement and the National Cement Company owned by Devki Group. This comes barely a month after the firm began building a cement plant at Mtware in southern Tanzania.
Private Equity firm Fusion Group has announced plans to build a US$14.7 million commercial office development in the Upper Hill area of Nairobi, Kenya . In a statement, Fusion says that the project’s location in Upper Hill’s diplomatic belt is its main selling point.
The United Africa Group plans to develop luxury apartments, worth N$230 million (US$23.4 million) in central Windhoek at a piece of land it bought a couple of years ago from the City of Windhoek but has since raked in N$70 million (US$7.1million) by selling two portions of the land to FNB Namibia and the Social Security Commission.
The firm added that the proposed development, in a highly sought-after location near the British and Japanese Embassies, is attracting considerable interest from investors. The announcement comes barely seven months after November last year’s Fusion-led consortium, which invested US$11.7 million in an office complex dubbed Upper Scale Developments on Ngong Avenue, Upper Hill. The development is scheduled for completion next year.
The Group announced in a statement that the development of the luxury apartments surrounding what it calls Freedom Plaza will improve the lives of Namibians by taking full advantage of worldclass, dining, entertainment, spa, gym and luxury retail facilities. A total of 93 apartments form part of this development. The Group, formed in 1992, has established a variety of business interests in real estate, hospitality, fuel services, financial services and renewable Energy.
Kenya’s capital is currently enjoying a huge demand for high quality office space, thanks to an influx of global corporation in the mining sector and others establishing regional offices in the city.According to a recent report by Knight Frank, Nairobi was ranked top in a list of 16 cities across Africa, Asia and Middle East, that measured the rate of increase in office space rent.
The Group said 400 jobs will be created during the construction. The retail and office space on completion will create close to 300 permanent jobs, applying a multiplier effect factor of seven per payroll earner results in 2,100 minimum Windhoek. This development will also attract and thus contribute to Windhoek's municipal revenue by way of rates and taxes.

Background of FOCI The Federation of Construction Industry is a voluntary organization of Building or Civil Engineering Contractors and other professionals who have association with the construction industry in Nigeria. FOCI was formerly known as the Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors [FOBACEC] but the name was later generalized to incorporate Associate, Information and other membership types. Membership has grown from 7 foreign firms in 1954 to 125 firms of indigenous, indigenized as well as foreign firms. All FOCI members are reputed for specific and genuine jobs in Nigeria. There are no shoddy jobs; there are no records of abandoned projects or collapsed buildings ever handled by the industry. aspiring members are thus scrutinized for assurance of their integrity, vocational competence and activeness in accordance with FOCI standards.
The AGM and Exhibitions The Exhibitions began some seven years ago as a small part of the Annual General Meeting where individual companies in the industry were able to showcase their works. It has since been expanded yearly to incorporate new innovations. We began to bring in manufacturers and sellers of products and equipment from different continents to exhibit their products and to give us details of their equipment; how they can be sourced and maintained. Members of the industry can in turn go to different parts of the world to get resources for their work. Participants are exposed to technological developments around the world. In the last four years, the exhibitions has increasingly gained recognition as a veritable business and networking platform for construction professionals and support service providers globally. The public can look forward to an even bigger and better exhibition than we had this year in 2014. We hope to bring in more product exhibitors from which the construction companies can benefit; from Korea, Japan, Italy, China, America, Germany and around the world. Beyond the exhibitions, we want them to establish liaison offices in Nigeria where people can go and transact business with them,and this is beginning to happen. Companies that participated have begun to express their desire to establish liaison offices in Abuja or Lagos.I did say in my opening speech at the AGM that exhibitors will soon begin to see the impact of the exhibitions. How has FOCI benefited its members and the Construction industry as a whole? We have a policy whereby we discuss with the Federal Government. FOCI is an institution that is well known to the government as it produces the building work rate/schedule that government uses to date. FOCI also produced a regulation of construction workers’ salary that the Federal Ministry of Works and Labour assents to and uses in government payments. FOCI has done a categorization of construction companies for use by the Federal Ministry of Works where the size of a company determines the type of project that it gets from the government.

De Hoop Dam in South Africa Developing a new approach to RCC materials and mixes
T
he Olifants River Water Resources Development Project (ORWRDP) consists of the construction of the new De Hoop Dam that is currently underway in the Limpopo Province and the Flag Boshielo Dam that was completed in 2006. The purpose of the Olifants River Water Resources Develoment Project is mainly to unlock economic potential and improve social development within the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Phase 2A of the project, which is the construction of the new De Hoop Dam, will essentially be the heart of the system providing life to the project as a whole. The construction of De Hoop Dam commenced in June 2007 and Completion will be in December 2013. Once completed. De Hoop Dam will be one of the largest concrete dams in South Africa in
terms of concrete volume with a total of more than 1,1 million m3 of concrete including Immersion Vibrated Roller Compacted Concrete as well as Conventional Vibrated Concrete. Materials and RCC mix optimization The experience at De Hoop dam has been extremely useful in developing a new approach to RCC materials and mixes in South Africa. Former Roller compacted concrete(RCC) dams built in the past by the Water Affairs Authority had followed the low paste approach. RCC mixes were formerly placed at a water to cement ratio of about 0,9. Despite the relatively high water content these mixes tended to segregate and the concrete was generally of a poorer quality than the traditional conventional concrete. As a result of this the design team at De Hoop decided to follow from the
beginning a mix approach with a higher paste content that would also be easier to consolidate by roller compaction. Main properties of the initial RCC mix Crushed coarse and fine aggregate have been used from a quarry production installed in the future reservoir area. In the initial stages of the mix design the envelopes of the aggregate grading curves were revised and the allowance for the fine content of the sand was increased up to 10% passing 0,075 mm sieve. Coarse aggregate following the SANS standard and with a maximum size of 53 mm was used during the preliminary trials. In the original specified mix, the sand/total aggregate ratio was 41% and the workability was between 15 and 25 seconds. The investigation of the initial mix at the laboratory and on several test sections concluded that there was still a need for improvement. Although the mix behaved well at the laboratory (compaction and strength), the cores extracted from the test slabs showed some spots with segregation and in some cases lack of bonding between layers. During placement, the fresh RCC mix did not look as a typical high-pozzolanic workable mix. When dumped on the field there were still some signs of segregation at the bottom of the heap and the mix looked too dry. During compaction it was not possible to get much paste on the surface and there was no movement when walking on top of this concrete. These were all signs of a less workable and drier mix than desired. The findings after testing the proposed mix design were quite positive. The segregation was eliminated, the fresh concrete was much
more cohesive and with a higher volume of paste around the particles of aggregate. The placement and compaction were much easier and higher densities could be achieved with just a few passes of the vibratory roller. As a consequence of all this, the production could be increased and the time between layers could be reduced. The analysis of cores showed that a good bonding and interpenetration between layers was possible to achieve. This was caused by a relatively high volume of paste on the surface of the compacted layers with a reduced setting
time. Therefore the treatment of the horizontal joints could be significantly reduced compared to that required with the initial mix. The mix could have been further optimised if some modifications could have been implemented in the aggregates processing plant. These adjustments would include replacement of a tertiary crusher (vertical impact instead of a cone) and the installation of a fines recovery unit. The aim was to improve the shape of the fine aggregate and to increase the amount of fines passing 0,075 mm sieve up to 14 - 15%. Unfortunately it was too late to implement these measures at the site.
Therefore the water content was maintained at a relatively high level to ensure a good workability. This is a much more limiting factor to guarantee the in-situ quality of the RCC than the compressive strength.Preliminary laboratory tests indicated that if the proposed changes in the crushing plant could have been implemented a reduction of the cement and fly-ash content of more than 25 kg/m3 might have been possible.

We have come a long way from the time rolling rocks over cave entrances was fashionable and nowadays a lock on a door is the more preferable mode. But as locks have evolved so has the sophistication of those willing and able to break in without authority.

In this article we look at what’s out there and what are the new trends in locking devices. he concept of Live, Work and Play is quickly becoming fashionable. Developers understand that today’s discerning home owner desires a setting that provides all the three features. The Aberdare Hills Golf Resort that is coming up in the scenic Naivasha area of Kenya’s Rift Valley seeks to provide home owners with a fulfilling lifestyle by providing virtually all facilities and amenities one may need in their life. The highlight of the development is a world class 18-hole golf course. Home owners will be required to submit housing plans for approval in order to safeguard the Resort’s envisaged class. The development is being undertaken by Panda Development Company Limited (PDCL), a company incorporated in Kenya featuring some of the most experienced professionals in the region’s building industry. Concept and motivation The developer’s intention is to create a high quality sustainable residential golf resort overlooking Lake Naivasha within the Great Rift Valley. Components of the Resort The Aberdare Hills Golf Resort has two components. The North parcel will be the luxury residential Aberdare Hills Golf Resort which will include an 18-hole World Class championship golf course, clubhouse, hotel and villas. The South parcel is being set aside for the development of a compact commercial area, a separate resort district and residential areas. The project kicked off in 2010 and is expected to be fully complete in seven years. Investor guidelines and approval procedure In order to achieve the vision for the future of new development within Aberdare Hills, all buyers shall submit their designs to the Aberdare Project 26
Management Limited for approval. Lodgment and assessment of drawings shall be undertaken in two stages. Stage 1 - Concept Design Approval Stage 2 - Final Design Approval Upon lodgment, applications will be reviewed promptly. The buyer shall receive written notice from PDCL of the success or otherwise within 10 working days of each lodgment. When the design has met the required criteria, PDCL will issue a letter of compliance. Stage 1 Sketch design drawings at 1:100 scale, are prepared by the buyer’s architect/building designer from a list of approved architects and designers. Stage 2 The following is required for final design approval: a) Site plan This should indicate: • Legal property description, existing and adjoining features of the property where
possible. Building footprint and setback from boundaries from walls and roof line. • Location of all structures on site including swimming pools. b) Floor plans These should indicate: • Total floor area, including carport, garage, porches and all covered areas. • Position and sizes of rooms, windows and doors. • Floor levels in relation to natural ground level. c) Elevations and Sections These should show: • Roof forms, pitch, overhangs and shading devices. • Position, type and sizes of all windows and doors design elements such as entry features etc. d) The buyer shall also provide a Landscape Plan and colour schedule including a Landscape Plan, outline of all buildings and improvements on the property. •

The site chosen for the Aberdare Hills Golf Resort is on a high plateau with views over Lake Naivasha. The resort includes the Malewa River on its north-west boundary and dry gorges and ravines. Operating Environment BPL feels that although in the past the regulatory framework guiding construction activities has been weak leading to the proliferation of substandard buildings, there is hope that the situation will change in the wake of stakeholder consultations and the coming into operation of the National Construction Authority. On the business climate, BPL is of the view that this has been tough in general. “With large swings in the currency exchange rate and volatility ofprices of oil and raw materials makes it difficult to predict trends. Local inefficiencies in skilled labour, transport, etc. along with high interest rates also add to this”, says Mr. Dodhia.

UAP Tower to add to
Upper Hill’s skyline UAP Tower, a 30-storey skyscraper, will alter the skyline of Nairobi’s fastest growing suburb.
U
pper Hill has already become a prime office location in Nairobi. According to respected Kenyan real estate firm, Hass Consult, many businesses have relocated to the area from the Central Business District, with companies now building their headquarters in the area as a first choice.
Contrasting with the spectacular, modern skyscrapers are some remaining and somewhat unkempt bungalows whose owners are probably waiting for the right price to sell the land. The area is home to several international and local company headquarters. Equity Bank, CIC Insurance, Britam, The World Bank, Coca-Cola, City Bank, are among big names have built impressive head offices at Upper Hill.

It therefore came as no surprise when UAP decided to put up a multi-storey office building in the area. UAP is a pan-African Financial Services Group with interests in Insurance, Investment Management, Property Investments and Developments, Securities Brokerage and related Financial Services.

Metso launches industry first ‘Green-Mean’ track technology in Ghana

The protection of the environment has become a core issue in the construction and mining business across the globe. As a result of the increased awareness of the issue, there is the need to find technology that has the ability to safeguard the environment. Metso Minerals Inc. in pursuit of its environmental footprints has developed the Lokotrack 1000 series applying Green-Mean’ technology that makes construction business and the environment go together. The new Lokotrack 1000 series promises low noise levels, besides offering the best of fuel efficiency in its class. The equipment units are equipped with on-board water spray nozzles and conveyor covers, besides fulfilling engine emission regulations, making them one of the greatest track machines in the industry. “Essentially what we are talking about is that compared to our previous range of Lokotrack equipment, this is actually 20% more efficient so making more effective use of energy. We consider it as green through improving the efficient use of the equipment’’ says the customer service senior manager, Mr Mike Djan-Sampson of Metso Ghana Limited. There is the absence of redundancy with regard to the equipment, “it is pure manual, hydraulics, without solenoids and other electronics, it a very simple design fit for purposes that increase energy efficiency’’, Mr Djan-Sampson adds. Mr Eric Lavieville, Product Portables Manager of Metso Finland said all the issues concerning the 46
environment would minimise the emission, the fuel consumption and the impact of footprint on the environment. Mr Francois Wintergerst, Business Manager of Systems of Metso France stated that the development of the machine also took into account what is linked to the environment, such as the link to dusting because of the dust of the industry, link to noise protection and adaptation to ensure customer choice. Value for money The Lokotrack 1000 series crushing and screening equipment has test-proven fuel economy combined with the industry’s most consistent production levels, maximising profitability. Taking pole position in the retail developments category is Nicolway Bryanston Shopping Centre, developed by Rodrigues Group and designed by MDS Architecture. Providing contemporary convenience shopping this split level shopping centre is designed for subtle sophistication with an air of minimalism. Earning top spot in the industrial developments category is Ellerines Port Elizabeth. This high-tech distribution facility is owned and developed by Growthpoint Properties and designed by Loudon Perry Anderson Architects. The innovative project is the second time that this winning team has clinched the industrial development award. In 2012, it won the category with Ellerines distribution facility in the Western Cape. The Maslow Hotel, developed by Sun International and designed by Dakota Architecture, took top honours in the refurbishment developments category. As Sun International’s first venture into business hotels, it undertook a ninemonth long refurbishment of the five-storey hotel, formerly the Grayston Hotel, in the heart of Sandton’s business district. While there was no winner in the ‘Other developments’ category, Thuto Building developed by University of Pretoria to provide four 600-seat lecture halls on its Hatfield Campus was given a special mention, merit award . Vodacom Century City Solar Power was given a merit award in the Innovative Solutions category, for the photovoltaic array installed on the rooftop of Vodacom Century City, which is expended to yield 830MWh of energy a year. Taking the winning title in the heritage developments category is Freedom Park Phase II, developed by Freedom Park and Office of Collaborative Architects, a joint venture of Gapp Architects and Urban Designers, Mashabane Rose Associates and MMA Architects. Freedom Park is a memorial and monument narrating the story of South Africa spanning a period of 3.6 billion years and includes a Garden of Remembrance to acknowledge those that contributed to the freedom of the country. Waterfall Valley Mature Lifestyle Estate triumphed in the residential developments group. Owned and developed by Century Property Developments, this is the final phase in the Waterfall Hills retirement estate, situated between Kyalami and Sandton in the prestigious Waterfalls community. The overall transformation category winner is Afrika Tikkun Uthando Community Centre, comprising classrooms, offices, parking, playground and vegetable garden. Owned and developed by Afrika Tikkun, the community centre was developed in a heritage building – the old Transvaal Memorial Children’s Hospital, opposite Constitution Hill. Afrika Tikkun provides education, health and social services to children, youth and their families from the centre of excellence. Growthpoint Properties’ Lakeside Office Park in Centurion won the overall green award with its design by AMA architects. The building is designed for a GBCSA Four Star Green Star rating.
