When to buy and when to rent construction equipment

Utilizing technology in construction

Before you go ahead and buy that

Technology is helping a lot of industries to improve their processes and productivity, the construction industry is no exception. The industry is regarded as one of the most information-intensive industries as a lot of processes require real time and extensive exchange of information between workers and stakeholders. In the past decade, the construction industry has seen many changes, from the construction materials used, type of builders, to methods used to design and build new facilities; all thanks to advancements in technology. These changes have the ability to make construction sites in Africa more productive and less stressful.

new shiny concrete screed and call yourself a proud owner, it might be worth thinking about renting rather than buying.

22 Benefits of water damage restoration

Computer-aided design, or CAD, is now a fact of life in the design-construction process. The benefits to the construction industry already have been significant in several respects. These include reduced interferences, better feedback to the design cycle on the impact of constructability enhancements, and improved communication between the designer and supplier to ensure that the right component is available at the construction site when it is needed.

When there is water damage, there is more than just what meets the eye. Water can get into ducts and vents, thus creating further problems.

Africa needs to the embrace this new age in which the use of technology at the right time is crucial to achieve time, cost and quality objectives of construction project a. Construction companies should therefore consider investing in upcoming technological trends to reduce their long term cost, be more productive and get a competitive edge in the market.

SAWEA secures US $3.5bn for wind energy sector South Africa Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) has secured US $3.5bn investment in the country’s wind energy sector. Tebogo Movundlela, Chair of the association confirmed the reports and said the funds were aligned with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for South Africans to mobilize investment in the country that will help solve the energy problems. “South Africa is on the cusp of creating a dynamic energy future. I am pleased that the draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) had recognised renewable energy as the cheapest form of electricity, pointing out that the price of wind had halved and was now 79c/ kWh,” said Movundlela.

Germany-based global provider for road pavers Joseph Vögele AG is restructuring their extensive range of road pavers and screeds. The newly introduced Classic Line is for pavers equipped with the extremely easy-to-use Ergo Basic operating concept.

Part of the Parrot Business Solutions portfolio; this durable, multipurpose solution features groundbreaking new cameras, Steep Landing technology and a unique Endurance Extension feature for flight times of up to 90 minutes and single-flight coverage of up to 500 ha (1,235 ac) at 400 ft (122 m) September 5, 2018, InterDrone (Las Vegas, USA) — senseFly, the industry’s leading provider of fixed wing drone solutions, today sets a new standard in mapping tools with the launch of the eBee X.

These machines are hallmarked by a very solid machine concept which offers a basic range of convenient features. The machines also offer all essential features required for daily paving work. All the machines are equipped with engines and screeds that match the national requirements of their respective target markets. The company has announced to divide its range into two lines including the Premium Line and the Classic Line. The company will also be subdividing its products into up to five classes within those lines.

Launched with the promise that “it’s not about the drone,” but instead about overcoming business challenges, the eBee X, part of the Parrot Business Solutions portfolio, is designed to boost the quality, efficiency and safety of an operator’s geospatial data collection. It offers a camera to suit every job, the accuracy and coverage capabilities to meet the requirements of even the most demanding projects, and is durable enough to work virtually every site. “The eBee X is a giant leap forward for mapping technology and underscores senseFly’s position as the leader in the fixed-wing drone market,” said Gilles Labossière, the Executive Vice President and COO of Parrot Group, and senseFly CEO. “No matter what type of project a professional is undertaking, the eBee X has the coverage, data and accuracy capabilities needed to get the job done.” MULTI-PURPOSE One tool, multiple cameras, for every job The eBee X includes a range of revolutionary new camera options to suit every mapping job—from land surveying and topographic mapping to urban planning, crop mapping, thermal mapping, environmental monitoring and many more.

MB provides crusher buckets for a range of construction applications Italy-based global construction equipment supplier, MB Crusher has provided solution for construction and demolition waste (CDW) processing. “The process of recycling is pretty straightforward. Firstly, fine material is separated. Subsequently, there needs to be a volumetric reduction, a separation from any metals and the final removal of the light fraction. However, of this whole process crushing is considered the critical phase for several reasons,” said the company. In the Hautes Pyrénées (France), a combination of a crusher bucket BF80.3 with an iron separator and a New Holland excavator are paring up to recycle the railway sleepers which were cumulated. The MB crusher bucket aims to work with any brand of excavator, utilising their hydraulic system, so material that represented difficult waste to dispose of can be not only a revenue font but an easy task to accomplish. The alternative in the market given by MB jaw crusher bucket, where concrete can be separated from the iron. To facilitate this operation the suggestion is to load the bucket with an MB grapple and let the jaw and gravity do the rest. Alternatively, skilled operators can feed the bucket manoeuvring the excavator, a magnetic kit installed can also facilitate the separation and salvaging the metal.

officially launched the tough, cost-effective Kwagga range of locallyassembled equipment for the building and construction industry. The Kwagga FS400 floor saw, with a 12 hp GX390 Honda engine, is ideal for cutting surfaces such as concrete and asphalt. Key features are a maximum cutting depth of 140 mm, and a super-rigid box frame to ensure straight cuts and extend blade life substantially. A heightadjustable handle gives a comfortable grip for users, while an easy-touse crank raises and lowers the cutting depth efficiently.

In Brazil, light posts were accumulated in a warehouse, treated as waste due to the difficulty of the reclaiming process. With the use of a Bucket Crusher BF60.1mounted on a Case CX130B, these old posts became a font of income, easily processed to extract the iron which is then resold.

Powered by Honda engines, the Kwagga range is ideal for use in tough South African operating conditions. This is due to its durability, in conjunction with the company’s well-established back-up and service division offering after sales support. The Kwagga range is supplied with a standard one-year warranty. www.constructionreviewonline.com

MANAGEMENT

IMPORTANCE OF CONSTRUCTION MESH BANNERS

I

f you are in the construction industry, you already know the importance of having a fence around your site. Each country has its own regulations when it comes to temporary fencing for construction projects, but there are things about mesh banners that are universal. That means that they can be used in a variety of industries and for different purposes. Take a look at some of the benefits that construction mesh banners can provide you with. 1.Better job site safety When there is a mesh banner on the fence around the site, it helps prevent injuries. Loose debris, dirt and other items cannot pass through the fence and accidentally hurt someone. By putting up signs which instruct pedestrians to cross to the other side of the street, they can stay safe. Keeping the passers-by from harm is not the only safety benefit that mesh banners provide. They will also helps the construction workers stay focused, seeing as how there are no distractions from the outside. Mesh banners reduce visibility into the construction site which helps keep your equipment safe as well as the progress you’ve made. You do not want to experience the financial blow of having all your machines stolen and the construction damaged. 2.High quality Mesh banners were made specifically to endure robust outdoor conditions. These materials are tough, fade- and UV-resistant. Seeing as how the mesh has thousands of tiny holes on its surface, the wind can flow through it with no problems. That means that the wind cannot knock over the fence and damage the banner. Moreover, it is waterproof and eco-friendly. 3.Great versatility Due to the way they are made, you can put up, take down and add more of these panels without any difficulties. Any adjustment can also be made easily. They are very lightweight and easy to install and you can hire professional or even do it yourself. Once you purchase 8

them, they can be used multiple times if you take proper care of them. 4.Budget-friendly Mesh banners are quite an affordable choice. Taking into consideration all the benefits mesh banners can provide you with, deciding to get them is a no-brainer. 5.Cleaner neighborhood We are all aware of the fact that construction sites are messy. While the crew cannot keep cleaning it up all the time, at least the mess can stay hidden. Fences with mesh banners are great for keeping all the debris from the construction contained and thus making the neighborhood look cleaner. The nearby residents will be very grateful. 6. A glimpse into the future Another way to please the neighborhood is to provide them with the concept of the future building. People usually do not like blandlooking fences ruining the look of their street. That is why giving them something nice to look at while anticipating the grand reveal is vital. 7. Brand awareness Businesses are always looking for ways how to promote their company. Luckily, if you are in the construction business, you do not have to pay for additional ad space. You can have a construction fence banner made and use it on your own construction site. Add your name, logo, phone, office location, web address, and whatever you can think of. Passers-by can notice it when walking past it and might look you up later if they have a job for you. Seeing it a few times around town can make them trust you more. This can also lead to more conversions. A big plus here is that in some locations billboards are not allowed, which can give you an advantage. Like we already mentioned, these banners are fade-resistant, which means that you can use them for quite a long time, on multiple occasions. Moreover, keeping the

CR | Nov - Dec 2018

neighborhood clean will also make for a great impression of your company and you might get great reviews. 8.Partner promotion Seeing as how there are a lot of parties involved in the construction process, you can also use mesh banners to thank all the people who have contributed to the realization of this project. Instead of promoting only yourself, you can also put their names on the fences. Mention your collaborators, from financiers to architects and builders, as well as future tenants. All of them will be extremely grateful for the recommendation and might refer their own clients to you. Other uses At the beginning, we said that mesh banners are not used only in the construction industry. Here are some of the other uses. Mesh banners are widely used for all sorts of events. They are made to easily catch the audience’s attention. In addition to the artwork of the event, they usually display the necessary information and the logos of the sponsors. During various sports events, sponsor banners are typically installed on fences. Other places where mesh banners are commonly used are outdoor events, such as festivals, concerts, exhibits and fairs. Some people choose to promote themselves by putting banners on really tall buildings. That can easily draw the eye and get the message across. In addition to providing safety on construction sites, mesh banners can also be used for crowded events as a means of crowd control. They can show directions, restricted areas and some danger zones. There are many benefits provided to you by construction mesh banners, regardless of whether you are in the construction industry or not. Look into your options, spread brand awareness and stay safe.

Sino–Africa cooperation a game changer Achieving Africa’s development is no easy task, and its transformation comes with sacrifices being made to ensure that China’s investments see the light of day; Sino-Africa support is based on mutual respect and collaboration. Dr. Darlington Muzeza, a member of the newly founded African Tourism Board

T

he People’s Republic of China and Africa relations in the last few decades have become one of the most progressive and dynamic on the political, social and economic partnerships in the world. In Africa projects worth billions of dollars have been planned for implementation ranging from road infrastructure, airports, energy, water and sanitation, aviation, manufacturing, mining and indeed, generous assistance to multilateral donations of infrastructure such as the construction of a multi-million African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. There is no doubt that Sino-Africa relations are based on mutual benefits. These fundamental developments, for instance, are coming on the back of China having committed and availed US $60bn at the end of 2015 directed towards the industrialization and modernization of the continent. The value of trade between the People’s Republic of China and Africa had increased phenomenally totaling US $200bn in 2014. Apart from the US $60bn availed under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation Summit in South Africa in December 2015, billions of dollars had already been poured into infrastructure development in different African countries.

With regards to size, the continent is poorly connected in terms of road, rail, air and sea infrastructure – which is one of its greatest barrier to its development, transformation and modernization.

10

Key to change This support is key to change the face of Africa in terms of trade. Generally, Africa’s development hinges on a number of things being addressed, and one of them being connectography which deals with connecting geographical transport infrastructure, communication networks and harmonizing policies internally to facilitate trade and investments within Africa and beyond.

CR | Nov - Dec 2018

The maddening paradox is that the continent’s sheer size and diversity of its landscape, present huge opportunities and challenges as well. With regards to size, the continent is poorly connected in terms of road, rail, air and sea infrastructure – which is one of its greatest barrier to its development, transformation and modernization. On a scale, the continent is largely landlocked with many countries cut off from air and sea ports, and the difficulty of moving goods from one country to the other weighs down the intracontinental trade which is estimated to be at a paltry 15% within Africa (African Development Bank, 2017). Further limit cooperation In general terms, African citizens and consumers endure the brunt of these trade and commerce difficulties, coupled with trade and policy dissonance that also further limit cooperation between and among countries – but thanks to the 2018 Kigali African Union Summit at which African Heads of State acceded to the African Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA), an agreement cast in the same way as the European Union, aimed at paving the way for a liberalized market for goods and services across the continent. It is important to note that Zimbabwe under the Presidency of Emmerson Mnangagwa, signed the CFTA. Regionally, the government through the support of the Chinese companies is in the process of building road and energy infrastructure which will go a long way in ensuring industrialization, trade, and commerce to improve. It is a fact that the costs of doing business are driven up by a host of factors which among other things include tariffs, border delays, delays in the movement of goods and corruption. However, the biggest challenge is www.constructionreviewonline.com

that if there are no streamlined transport systems in terms of rail, road, and air, cargo will find it difficult to move from one region to the other in a situation where our economies are highly dependent. Thus, products fail to reach destinations on time, let alone perishables decaying along the way as a result of underdeveloped road and rail systems, which push up costs of doing business in Africa and drags down efficiencies. It is a fact that Chinese investment in African infrastructure through Beijing’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), ultimately helps to create expanded sub-regional linkages. China Brief clearly points out building the East-West Africa highway is key in which infrastructure networks could help facilitate and spring the emergence of an eventual, true East-West link in the long term. In the short-to-mid-term, the investments being made in road infrastructure will truly and robustly set East-West transport links as a formidable force that is going to be a panacea in improving trade and commerce in Africa. It is envisioned that the proposed East-West link in the form of the Trans-Africa Highway 5 will manifest into credible network systems for trade for a full continental connection for a strong transcontinental African transport backbone corridor that is likely to change trade relations within Africa. Achieving Africa’s development The nine-highway network is said to have been originally put forth by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in 1971 and currently undertaken by the agency in conjunction with the African Union, the African Development Bank and external stakeholders. The highway connects Dakar, in Senegal, to the Chadian capital of N’djamena, about 4,500 kilometers. It runs through seven countries, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. In Southern Africa, individual countries are accessing funding to build airports in the case of Zimbabwe, the completed Victoria Falls International Airport to the tune of US $150m loan from China, is a good example. China is also supporting revamping and expansion of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and in Zambia, the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is nearing completion. More support has been invested in energy projects, and this will mark a huge transformation in development among African countries. Achieving Africa’s development is no easy task, and its transformation comes with sacrifices being made to ensure that China’s investments see the light of day. It is appreciated that Sino-Africa support is based on mutual respect and collaboration, contrary to the view that Africa is facing another threat of Sino colonization. That is conspiratory. Going into the future, African economies stand to benefit by way of improvement in terms of economic competitiveness and enhanced trade volumes within Africa and beyond.

COVER STORY

Construction industry goes robotic ndustrial robots and artificial intelligence are playing an increasing role in the manufacturing market. According to a study by the World Bank, Africa has a regional average of two industrial robots per 100,000 manufacturing workers.

I

The premise is that usually in order to maximize on output the greatest advantage of robots is found in making them carry out repetitive tasks, on a large scale but in construction projects robots can be adopted to tackle challenges found on construction sites in order to maximize their usefulness.

The continent could see its emerging markets shed jobs to automation far quicker than in countries like Japan, where the move toward automation has happened, ironically, more organically through local innovation rather than imported machinery. This shift is bound to affect the construction industry given the attraction that robotics offers in the areas of efficiencies in time and cost.

Types of Construction Robots There are several different types of construction robots that are expected to break out on a massive scale into the construction industry. Among the top ones is the 3D-printing robot that is capable of putting up building structures on demand. The 3D-printing robot prints an entire structurally safe building through the help of a mobile robotic arm that is digitally pre-programmed with instructions.

Currently, in the construction industry, robotics is being used for self-operating machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, and cranes. However, the implications of this technology are far-reaching. For instance construction workers can now concentrate on more skilled-oriented tasks if robots can replace the workers in performing the more mundane jobs. This will not only bolster efficiency but also improve time management for most construction job sites. Take Botswana, a landlocked country known for diamonds and political stability. Robots are being used in the country’s largest sector, mining, where robots are already going to depths that humans simply cannot reach, and bringing up tennis-ball sized stones. This is a testament to the resilience and accuracy that robotics can bring onto the construction industry. 12

This new technology is not only limited to buildings as it is now being used in building bridges, with the first ever 3D printed bridge being built in the Netherlands recently. The combination of 3D printing and industrial robots is among the most promising automation technology being witnessedin the construction industry. Another new technology is construction robots for brick-laying masonry, with some robots even being able to layout an entire street at a go. Not only do these robots improve the quality of the construction work, but also dramatically improve the speed of construction. The other type of construction robot that is about to break into the market is the

Japan’s Advanced Industrial Science and Technology Institute humanoid construction robot installs drywall by itself. demolition robot. Despite being slower than demolition crews, these robots are much safer and cheaper in demolishing concrete structures. In addition to these construction robots, there are several others such as remote controlled vehicles, also known as autonomous vehicles. Variable environments Robots perform exceptionally well at repetitive tasks in a controlled environment such as a factory. By incorporating robots in large-scale manufacture of pre-fabricated elements, there will be an upstream in the industry whereby the manufacturing task will be performed in a controlled environment, and not on site. However, construction sites are far from being a controlled environment. For robots to be profitable and productive, they need to be able to adapt to real-time variations in their environment with little or no programming. Being able to adapt and change with the environment is very difficult for robots to accomplish; however, a few robots are taking on these historically challenging tasks.

Before using robots for construction, the building site needs to be characterized, and this includes the working environment as well as the type of tasks that need to be done. Construction sites have a wide range of geographical dispersion, especially for large projects. Unlike in a factory setup, the final products are not repetitive as each project has its unique features, with different activities being done with little repetition. On construction sites, various tasks are taking place at the same time, and these tasks are interlinked in regards to the resources allocated to each of them. Building sites are very dynamic, with systematic changes in tasks and the surrounding environment; they are also hostile and are surrounded by obstacles, uneven surfaces, equipment among others. Their unstructured nature makes them not set to accommodate the movement of robots. In addition to that, the tasks performed at construction sites are complex in the cognitive sense, and the use of sensory capability, as well as knowledge based on

www.constructionreviewonline.com

experience, are highly required. Nevertheless, even tasks with repetitive operations would still require the robot to systematically change its position by shifting orientation when it begins a new cycle. In order for robots to perform adequately in construction sites, they will need to be portable, have the ability to move around, have the ability to ‘sense’ its environment, and be able to process data or information received. Vision Most robots use artificial vision which is able to recognize the range of the environment in which it is operating at. Robots should also be prepared for hostile environments. As mentioned earlier, construction sites are hostile and thus robots should be able to work outdoors while moving around in difficult conditions, unprotected and should also be ready for the unexpected such as falling materials, falling from heights and the elements. Robots should also be able to handle unwieldy or heavy loads such as beams or Nov - Dec 2018 | CR

13

prefabricated panels (which can weigh several tons). They should also be able to handle fragile materials that could break such as ceramic tiles, fittings or glass. Adopting technology such as robots in the construction industry has been met with some hesitations from industry professionals. However, experts agree that while digitization of the field as an emerging trend has the potential to remove some low-level positions, it will be several years before robotics is seen as a norm in the construction industry.

Job redundancies Those in the construction industry who are fearful that tech-infused solutions will take away their jobs should rest easy and be assured that automated machines will not replace human skill. This is because several tasks in the sector cannot be completed accurately and efficiently by a robot as compared to a human worker. For example, project management cannot be replaced by technology. The benefits of using robotics in the building industry are evolving on a daily basis and are continuously being embraced on a wider scale, yet construction workers have not been put out of work. To be able to have the maximum benefit, it is necessary first to modify the conceptual understanding of the construction industry, and more specifically, the process itself. Cheap labor is an impediment following the introduction of robotics in the industry. Implementing robotics will increase productivity while reducing the equipment and implementation costs.

Having the ability to manipulate these robots will be a good investment, given the flexibility it presents. Optimists say any adverse effects will be short-lived and robots will be a major boost in overcoming slowdowns in productivity, growth, income, and well-being. Additionally, combining robots and 3D printing could create possibilities for small enterprises to overcome challenges such as size limits in production as well as enable them to conduct business in terms of construction on a larger scale. As a highly unautomated industry, construction robots will have a major impact on the construction industry. As construction companies look to automate more and more tasks for the sake of efficiency and productivity, demand for construction robots will grow steadily.

R

ecreation Club in South Africa refurbishes floors and pillars with Flowcrete Africa. The Sasol Recreation Club in Secunda has worked with Flowcrete Africa to revitalise its conferencing facility with a luxury floor finish and a one-ofkind coating for its interior pillars. The venue wanted to transform its large conferencing area into a high-end environment that would provide guests and delegates with a visually impressive, clean and contemporary space in which to talk, work and present. However, the chosen materials would have to maintain its aesthetics when faced with the site’s busy day-to-day conditions. To achieve this, a decorative system was required that would be able to withstand heavy foot traffic,

24

frequent cleaning and all the impacts, scuffs, scratches and scrapes inherent to a busy conferencing facility. Mondéco Earth coating To create a floor finish up to the task at hand, 1,000 m2 of the seamless epoxy terrazzo system Mondéco Earth was applied in a crisp white Snow colour. The Mondéco Earth coating was ideal for the club’s requirements, as it portrays a modern, minimalist appearance while simultaneously providing all the functionalities necessary within a large-scale commercial venue. Sasol Recreation Club’s new interior design scheme is predominantly bright white with touches of black, which is illustrated by the

white walls, ceiling tiles and floor which are punctuated by ornate black chandeliers and black furniture. Mondéco Earth in Snow perfectly matches this stylistic choice thanks to its white backdrop with black aggregates sprinkled throughout to dapple the floor area with small dark dots. Being seamless, level and impervious, resin terrazzo systems can be cleaned very quickly and easily, ensuring that any dirt or contaminants are rapidly removed. This type of resin flooring is also exceptionally robust and so is able to retain both its aesthetic and operational properties for an extended period of time.

www.constructionreviewonline.com

The same specification was applied in the venue’s canteen area, where it would be subjected to spillages of hot food and drink, potentially corrosive acids and sugars as well as wheeled catering equipment. Thanks to its durability, the Sasol Recreation Club knew that its new floor finish would even be able to withstand these challenges with ease. Flowcrete Africa’s Peran STB system In addition to its Mondéco Earth floor, the Sasol Recreation Club also utilised Flowcrete Africa’s Peran STB system in a highly unique manner. The decorative epoxy coating, which is made of colour stable quartz granules sealed within a clear resin binder, was installed as coved skirting and was even vertically applied onto the building’s pillars! The colour Sandstone was chosen for the pillars and coving as it complements the white Mondéco Earth floor while providing a pleasant visual contrast to the surrounding black and white tones. In addition to there being a subtle border around the white floor, the coving also provides a useful practical advantage, as it avoids unwanted substances getting stuck in the gap between the wall and the floor.

The construction industry continues to evolve and the demand for construction materials is high.

Despite its success, KCP is not immune to the dynamics of the economy and the general operating environment in the country at any one time. Mr Rabadia cites such elements as tax increases and high interest rates as some of the factors that have contributed to a slowdown in the economy. He quotes a report by Cytonn Investments this year which indicated that the real estate sector had recorded high interest rates therefore limiting access to credit. Delays in payments to contractors is another problem bedeviling the industry, he says.

Industry Insights and Future As an active player in the industry, and like any other contractor, Mandhir Construction Limited is affected by various external factors in the operating environment. According to Mr Richard Kioko of Finance, the last two years in Kenya have not been favourable for business growth. This is not surprising given that elections in Kenya tend to take a toll on business almost every time and recovery takes a while. He also cites high interest rates as an impediment to growth. Mr

We offer the following services:  Instrument Sales, Calibration and Service  Hire of RTKs, Total stations, Levels & Laser scanners  Hire purchase arrangement on RTK and Total stations  Post processing of GNSS data  Land Authorized Surveying and mapping Service

Kioko feels that the government could do more to support contractors in the sector. But Mr Kioko is upbeat on professionalism in the industry saying, “There is a dynamic change in manpower expertise which has enhanced growth of businesses”. On the future of Mandhir Construction, Mr Kioko sees the company continuing with its positive growth trajectory, enhancing its capacity to undertake construction projects of any nature. Recently, the company has ventured into polished flooring works, which is an indication of its determination to offer a richer mix of services to the entire building and construction industry.
