anna silk Job: Actor Hometown: Fredericton,

NB Big break: Playing “Deb,” the stressed-out flight attendant who tries to quit smoking in a Nicoderm commercial. “It was popular, but it also got casting people to see me in a different light.” Currently in: Lost Girl (Sunday nights on Showcase) playing a succubus, a mythical creature who feeds on humans’ sexual energy to survive. What does your ideal man look like? I like guys that look like guys. I don’t like them to be prettier than me. Burly and hairy (but not excessively so). Favourite quote: Someone once said to me, “Find your light and shine it on the world.” Who has inspired you? My peers, the people I got to know in audition rooms. You tend to see the same group of people over and over again. I see how hard everybody’s working every step of the way. What’s still on your to-do list? Right now I’m just enjoying where I’m at. I’m enjoying not making lists. What makes you laugh? If I ever feel really stressed out, I go to YouTube and search for news bloopers. I think it makes me laugh because they’re trying to be so serious. What TV or movie character have you ever become emotionally attached to? When I was a kid I spent an entire summer as Wonder Woman. Every day I put on the blue bathing suit, blue rubber boots, my wristbands, my headband, my lasso—I took it very seriously. There wasn’t a lot of crime on my block, but if there had been, I was ready for it. — Jordan Dykstra

GUIDE SHARP WINE LOOK BETTER • FEEL BETTER • KNOW MORE

THE MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES OF RIESLING Understanding one of the world’s most versatile grapes. BY SUZAN YUM

C

an a grape suffer from multiple personality disorder? Consider the strange case of the noble Riesling. No murderous side to watch out for like Dr. Jekyll’s creepy alter ego, but this aromatic grape can surprise with its extreme personality changes. Upon first introduction, Riesling is zesty and crisp, perfectly complementing your grilled scallops; during your second encounter, it’s fruity and floral; and once you think you have

a handle on this grape, you discover a lusciously sweet version with exotic tropical aromas. Is it possible for one grape to produce such different styles? Naturally high in acidity, Riesling (pronounced “Reez-ling”) is one of the few white wines capable of aging. Since it is rarely oaked or blended, the wine is considered a pure expression of the grape and the land. Depending on the terroir and climate, aromas and

flavours can range from citrus to apple, stone fruit such as peach and apricot, tropical fruit like pineapple and mango, honey, and, with age, petrol. Two regions that best demonstrate the diverse styles of Riesling are just a hop, skip and a jump across the border from each other. Mosel, in Germany, typically produces light-bodied, medium-sweet Rieslings; while in France, Alsatian Rieslings tend to be dry with a bracing acidity.

RECOMMENDATIONS: TRIMBACH RIESLING 2007 2007 was considered a stellar harvest year in Alsace. This entry level Riesling from the renowned Trimbach is a fine introduction to a classic dry style. Citrus, white peach and minerality on the nose is repeated on the palate. A steely finish makes it a great complement to fish and seafood. $20 SELBACH-OSTER BERNKASTELER BADSTUBE RIESLING SPÄTLESE 2007 A lovely yellow colour with green highlights, this light-bodied Riesling has lively aromas and flavours of ripe apples, citrus and minerals, with a zesty acidity you feel in your teeth. At only 8% alcohol and a crisp, lingering finish, the bottle will be done before you know it. $29 REICHSGRAF VON KESSELSTATT RIESLING AUSLESE #6 2006 Made from grapes grown in the ancient 4.8-hectare Josephshöfer vineyard in the Mosel region, this lush Riesling has opulent aromas of honey, peach and pineapple. Once you tear your nose away from the glass, these flavours caress the palate. Any sweetness is balanced with acidity for an elegant finish. $45 34

pop prodigy Super-producer Mark Ronson shows off his Record Collection. Interview by Alex nino gheciu

The album

Album: Record Collection Artist: Mark Ronson

I

n music circles, Mark Ronson is known as the man with the Midas touch. But after turning Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen into pop gold and striking the mother lode with his 2007 covers album Version, the Grammy-winning superproducer is stepping out of his comfort zone. His new solo disc, Record Collection, sees him swap his trademark soul and brass sound for ’80s synth hooks, hip-hop swagger and off-kilter pop melodies, drawing from his gilded Rolodex of collaborators (Boy George, Q-Tip, Ghostface Killah, etc.) in the process. He talked to Sharp about making analogue gems in an era of Auto-Tuned coal, and why this might be his shiniest one yet—even if Amy disagrees. Did you make a pact with yourself not to put any horns or covers on Record Collection? I think so. I mean, to be honest, if Version had only sold a tenth of what it did then I might be more comfortable doing some of those sounds because I love ’60s soul music and 38

I love Afrobeat and those are things that horns are really a big part of. They’re interesting textures, but by the end of Version, the public reaction was very much like, “Okay, we get it. You like indie songs and you like trumpets.” You know, the Dap-Kings are such a brilliant band that I think I started to just use them as a crutch; if I was working on a song with a different artist, I knew that all I had to do was write up a chord chart and put it in front of them and “presto!” my job is done. So I think that it was good to have a challenge. Why the decision to go with a quirky, synth-based sound? I really didn’t know what I was going to do or what the record was going to sound like. Once we finished touring [in support of Version], I went into the studio and produced a few records for other bands because I needed that to fill my tank back up creatively. Then, when I was producing the new Duran Duran album, which will be out soon, working with Nick Rhodes on the keyboards especially inspired me. I was really familiar with that sound because I love Duran Duran and grew up on them, but I never used one of those keyboards before, especially not to build an album around them. I wasn’t trying to make a retro play…we just wanted to marry the sound of those instruments with the way we play rhythmically. Is Amy Winehouse a fan of the new record? No. Amy’s a bit of a purist; she likes what she likes. I wasn’t really expecting her

sharpformen.com | N ovember 2010

Sharp November 2010.indd 38

to like it. She’s also kind of brutally frank—that’s the name of her first album. I played it for her and…I don’t know. I only played it for her very quickly. Your oeuvre has always been very organic-sounding. What are your thoughts on the increasingly computerized nature of pop music today? Well, there are [electronicbased acts] like Crystal Castles and stuff that are pretty mind-blowing and it’s definitely computerized, but there’s a reason that it’s got those staggered drums and distorted vocals—it conveys the emotion of the music. I think it’s just a problem when the music becomes

devoid of emotion because of programs like Auto-Tune and Melodyne; they can fix anybody’s vocals and make anybody sound okay, but you have it to the point now where anybody can sing and the sound of the computer becomes more identifiable than the human voice…I don’t think pop music is in an exciting place right now. I don’t know if I’m just being nostalgic, but I was listening to Sirius Radio and they’ve got an ’80s station; I was thinking, “God, that channel that plays the hits of 2010 in 25 years, am I really going to want to listen to it and hear the pop music that’s in the iTunes top ten right now?” And I don’t think so.

MICHAEL BASTIAN After making his mark on high-fashion sportswear with his eponymous line, Michael Bastian’s latest achievement is a classic Americana-inspired collaboration with Gant. Sharp chatted with Bastian about his new collection, his influences and creating the perfect pair of khakis. INTERVIEW BY ALEX GRIGORESCU

OUR PICKS:

GUN CHECK BLAZER Bastian updates the classic tweed blazer with modern accents like a playful striped lining and unmistakable yellow corduroy elbow patches. $798

LAMBSWOOL FAIR ISLE SWEATER Fair Isle sweaters are fall staples, and this one blends old and new with bright colours, a lacrosse motif and distinctive elbow patches. $178

luxury world, because it was how my dad dressed. The fabric and the make are great, but the fits are for an older guy. So what’s in between? Where does this guy who might be in his 30s or 40s shop? What’s he going to wear? He goes to the gym, he has a good job, he’s got this education about how clothes should fit—there was nobody doing that stuff at a luxury level. All that colour is a bold choice for winter. For this collection, which was inspired by lacrosse, I was really feeling those classic varsity colours— clear orange, faded burgundy—and that one crazy green sweater, which has nothin’ to do with nothin’, at least colourwise. Yeah, what’s with that sweater? The sweater was supposed to be grey, navy and red, but then we open up the package from China and it’s pea-green with this orange lacrosse ball. It just happened to be the colours that they had on hand in the factory. At first, we were like, what’s that? But then, we thought, this is amazing! Not many designers would do that in a men’s collection… This is one of the fallacies that many people have: that men are afraid of colour. I’ve learned that’s not true. You just have to be careful. It’s easier to start small, like with a sweater, because

guys aren’t going to wear a pink sports-coat. I think guys really react to shots of colour here and there on an emotional level. You need to hit guys on that level because maybe they’re buying less but hunting for it a little harder. It’s gotta mean something to them. What’s the highlight of the collection for you? My favourite pieces are always those anonymous things that you might’ve been looking for and not finding, like a pair of chinos that’s really slim and perfectly fitting, has real pearl buttons, really great fabric and it’s the perfect khaki and there’s pig-stitching on it; those things that you could wear every day and they’re almost anonymous. There are certainly flashier, more signature things in the line, but it’s those things that a guy can wear every day that are closest to my heart. What’s the appeal of American sportswear? For my own collection, I wasn’t ready to enter that

Was designing this collection for someone else as much of a challenge as starting your own line? Doing the Gant thing weighed heavier on me than starting my own line. Looking back now, I’d been at Bergdorf for five years and was looking for a new challenge. I had this crazy idea that I was going to bite the bullet and do this little line of chinos. I called my parents, and told them I was quitting Bergdorf’s and starting my own line. Silence. Then, my mom said, “Well, you know sweetie, if that doesn’t work out, you can always move back home.” And that gave me the courage to do it. There was no trepidation to it at all. What’s in the future for MB and Gant? We’re going forward with at least six more seasons, and I think their personalities are going to come into focus. Having Gant as an outlet for sportswear has made the MB look even more refined and luxurious. SHARPFORMEN.COM

s the saying goes, Whitney Able cleans up nice. Her upcoming film, Monsters, takes place in a not-so-distant future in which alien invaders with an appetite for destruction have taken over a chunk of the US/Mexico border, and Able spends most of it running for her life through the filthy postapocalyptic landscape. It’s an unusual kind of monster movie (for one thing, the dialogue was entirely improvised) and Able is an unusually compelling monster movie ingenue. And while she is certainly the best-looking part of the film, she looks even better without a coating of dust, grime and monster guts (see photos). What was it like improvising most of Monsters? It was a wonderful exercise for an actor but really scary. Instead of learning lines we did a lot of back story work for two months before we left. It was a luxury because, most of the time, especially in television, you don’t have the opportunity to hold long conversations about what you’re doing. The prospect of spending months in the Mexican jungle wouldn’t be appealing to some actresses. What was your reaction? I’m down for adventure. I get really excited about schlepping it through the jungle—having an experience. But, you know, it’s sad because a lot of actors would never do that. I think it’s important...because our job is storytelling and we get caught up in the microcosm of Los Angeles and always chasing the dragon trying to get the work, but we’re missing the opportunity to experience things. It was really eye-opening— mind-expanding—to go and work like that because I got rich with experience. Do you see yourself doing more monster movies or are there more serious roles on the horizon? I would love to do a character piece. It’s hard, you know, they put me in the ingenue category. But I hope that one day I get to play something where I get to research and wear prosthetics. I like extremes. If I’m gonna kick ass, I wanna go through training. If I wanna be this alcoholic, crack-addicted young mother, then I want crazy makeup—just make me ugly. I like going to the extreme and putting the pedal to the metal. That does sound extreme. I don’t like to be bored. I’m just very hungry for enriching experiences. That’s what’s satisfying for me about my job. Changing. I’m a chameleon.

The North Face Summit Series Crimptastic Jacket The Crimptastic is a fantastic bit of kit that will very quickly become a fall and winter staple to anyone who owns it. It uniquely marries 800 fill power down panels with thick and durable windstopper fleece sections which are strategically placed at the jacket’s pressure points. In a traditional down jacket, these are the spots where the down typically compresses, drastically reducing its effectiveness—but not in this one. Instead, it’s lighter, less bulky and more durable than previous designs.
