We gathered the city’s most notable tastemakers at The Ritz-Carlton Toronto to enjoy a whimsical evening of fashion, art and culture. Upon arrival, an impressive Porsche Macan Turbo greeted guests at street level, while inside, women were pampered with manicures by CND and hair touch-ups by Revlon Professional. Attendees enjoyed a live art performance as they perused the season’s most lustworthy accessories from the likes of Gc and Chanel while sipping Champagne and Ciroc cocktails. S/Style & Fashion contributor Suzanne Rogers curated an extraordinary runway presentation of Salvatore Ferragamo’s fall/winter 2014 collection—the brand’s first-ever runway show in Canada. Fashion illustrator Danielle Meder immortalized the evening for the stylish crowd, with watercolour souvenirs to take home.

The multimedia exhibit explores how the two realms have influenced one another from the 1960s to the present day, by highlighting the industry’s influencers and designers. Michael Kors continues its efforts to combat world hunger with the Watch Hunger Stop campaign. The initiative, which has already provided over five million meals to children in need through the brand’s long-term partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), drives forward this fall with a new, limited edition timepiece. The dial of the unisex accessory displays a detailed map of the world and on the back, the words “1 WATCH = 100 MEALS” is engraved. Each watch sold will feed 100 children through WFP. Bespoke eyewear is the epitome of cool, and Marie Wilkinson would know. As the creative director at luxury eyewear brand Cutler and Gross, she owns over 125 pairs of glasses (60 of which are by the UK-based company). Here, Wilkinson divulges her favourite dining spots, shops and hidden gems in London, England.

EYE CANDY I am fortunate enough to walk past the Serpentine Galleries in Kensington Gardens on my way to work. Each year, the gallery commissions a renowned architect to design a temporary pavilion for display throughout the summer—this year’s installment, a lightgrey bulbous structure, was created by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic. Seeing the gardens evolve and transform with a thought-provoking building each summer is entrancing. There is so much energy in London due to the construction of new buildings—it makes the city feel so confident. The view from a pod of Emirates Air Line, which is a cable-run gondola that hangs nearly 300 feet above the River Thames from Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks, never ceases to take my breath away. It reminds me how dynamic and courageous the architecture along the river is, both the new and the old.

encouraged me to buy art. With his guidance, I commissioned and bought a shopping cart chair and stool from Tom Sachs in the early 1990s. Schneideman Gallery is the go-to place for photography, prints and rare illustrated books. It’s a gem of a shop run by the proprietors: Sophie, an expert on rare prints and vintage illustrated books, and Alex, who specializes in photography. SCP Designs, an interior design studio, has been in Shoreditch, a district in the East End of London, for nearly 30 years, and I remember being mesmerized when I first came to the city, by their collection of modern furniture and lighting designs. When I lived in Shoreditch in the mid ‘80s, I bought all of my furniture from them. I still own these items and they look just as fresh and exciting as they did back then—it gives me such pleasure. The company continues to produce fresh designs and is very egalitarian in their attitude.

The

IMPORTANCE Architecture

of

By Christopher Metler

Since 1976, the union of distinguished design firm RDAI and Hermès continues to flourish. As the brand opens its first Hermès Maison in China, the alliance holds strong, leading the luxury brand’s storefront aesthetic into the modern era without unseating its heritage.

I

It was not far into her brilliant career that Rena Dumas discovered the correlation between luxury and architecture. The Greek-born design visionary understood that luxury was influenced by time—the time to live, to reflect, to create—and that architecture was an event; a large responsibility, and yet a way to tell a story. Architecture, she realized early on, was a profession that could bestow happiness on others and so, she fostered the energy and knowledge necessary to construct magnificent work. The nearly 40-year symbiosis between the designer’s namesake firm, Rena Dumas Architecture Intérieure, and the French fashion house Hermès has spoken to that delicate virtue since day one. The union carried the company’s aesthetic into the modern era without unseating its heritage or tradition. Denis Montel, the managing and artistic director of RDAI, confirms Dumas’ balance between luxury and architecture. “I think that architecture became important for luxury brands around 15 years ago. At the beginning of 2000, most of the brands started to become quite international, and they began to use architecture as a communication tool, which made it more and more important. I think Tokyo was maybe the first city where buildings dedicated to brands appeared, and then a kind of competition started between the companies. As the entrance of the luxury market store evolved, architecture became a very important tool for communication.” Having spent more than a decade working with Rena Dumas before her death in 2009, Montel finds himself continuing to bring her initial conception into each project. “What I’m really S / STYLE & FASHION | Fall 2014

101

[aiming for] is a good combination [of] simplicity and quality, with a little bit of poetry,” he says. In her designs, Dumas would integrate elements of the Hermès Paris flagship, but would add touches of local flavour into each of the near-300 boutiques she designed. She never produced an exact replica. This approach refined the way Hermès welcomes its customers. “The best we can do for a company is to understand them and to design the way they want to be,” says Montel. “I always try to imagine or to understand what the message is. What’s the DNA? What’s the language of the brand?” Essentially, as Montel explains, the shop should look like its product. “We are never trying to emphasize or to be beyond the product or beyond the company. We’re trying to understand what [each company] is looking for.” After all, Hermès is very dynamic and their development has been fast and strong. And so RDAI had to understand them thoroughly to present the new face of Hermès. It’s why the firm never designs hyper-contemporary shops, but rather modern boutiques. “Modern because, at that time, in that place, it’s the right answer. And it’s supposed to last. This is something quite important in the message. Hermès is a long-lasting company. They are making enduring products. It’s not easy to, at the same time, be modern, to express time and to last.” Standout RDAI projects for Hermès dot the map: the iconic 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, where Hermès has resided since 1880. The Rive Gauche boutique on Paris’ Left Bank, which was built in a historic century-old swimming pool property marked by wooden pavilions made of ash laths. The 6,000 square metre Maison Hermès Ginza in Tokyo was codesigned with Pulitzer Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano and invokes the air of a traditional Japanese “magic lantern,” and Madison Avenue’s men’s store in New York City reflects its individuality, with Pennsylvania cherry wood in a light, matte finish, which is in contrast with the darker, glossy panelling that appears in the Paris flagship. Then, to complement the Californian sun, Rodeo Drive’s reinvented Hermès Beverly Hills is distinguishable immediately by its abstract storefront, constructed from white Carrara marble. Though these are only a small handful of the Hermès-RDAI collaborations in existence worldwide, Montel designates the Maison Hermès Dosan Park in Seoul as the one with special significance to him. “I cannot say it’s my favourite, but it’s the one we have completely designed from scratch.” From the building itself to the live detail within it, it’s the one Montel says was “really exciting,” as the agency started from the ground up, conceiving “absolutely everything else” from there.

Famed for producing some of the world’s most delectable meats and cheese, Parma, Italy is a gastronomy haven that your senses will devour.

A

By Maryam Siddiqi

Always up for tasting new foods, I say yes to the horsemeat platter at Osteria Lo Zingaro, a tiny restaurant in Parma, Italy. Actually, they’re all tiny restaurants in Parma. The meat is presented in three versions: cooked à la roast beef, pesto-seasoned tartar and traditional tartar. I eat the first two quite happily; though rich, they are flavoursome, but the plain tartar tastes just a bit too raw for me. I place my napkin on the plate to signify I am done with the meal, but it seems that the restaurant’s owner noticed what I hadn’t eaten—two companions next to me were in the same situation. He comes to the table with a small plate of finely chopped raw onion, grabs my fork and lifts the napkin off my plate with such haste I barely have enough time to feel embarrassed, sprinkles the onion on the meat, drizzles olive oil on top, then mashes it all together. He hands back my fork with a sort of “ta-dah!” movement and motions for me to eat. Suddenly, flavour! My friends follow suit, and we all dig back in to the dish. Of course, we didn’t like what we were eating at first—we weren’t adhering to tradition.

Parma’s rolling hills and tree-filled valleys offer a truly sensational view.
