How sweet are you? Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism where the body has trouble using glucose for energy. When we eat, our body breaks down foods known as carbohydrates into glucose, which is sent to our cells through the bloodstream. When our body’s systems detect glucose in the blood, an organ called the pancreas releases an appropriate amount of a hormone called
insulin. Insulin makes it possible for our cells to absorb glucose and provide the energy our body and brain need to function. Managing diabetes requires the careful, regular and frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels along with the appropriate therapy and diet as prescribed by your physician.

Let the Countdown Begin It’s genuinely hard to believe that 2014 has passed by so fast, that Christmas is around the corner, and that we’ll be welcoming a new year in no less than a few weeks from now. The last month of the year is always a hectic one for the Best Buy team, but nonetheless we have carefully put together a festivefilled edition that should help you in your preparations for Christmas. This month’s cover story on page 6 draws up a so-called Christmas bucket list, with a number of recommendations for traditional festive activities that we often wish to pursue, but never find the time to, such as enjoying a Christmas movie marathon, donating unused toys to the children’s wing at hospital, and roasting chestnuts on an open fire.

This is especially true when your client is purchasing a tangible product that has a known or intended use or application. With insurance, what does the client actually do to test out the product one is purchasing? It all hinges on the power and strength of the relationship between the two parties – buyer and seller, client and insurer.

A helping hand Christmas is a time of giving, but how charitable are the Maltese people? How many of them have volunteered to do charity work in their lifetime, and how many plan to? Best Buy takes to the streets of Valletta to find out. Violet Caruana, Mosta
Kurt Aquilina, Iklin
Have you ever volunteered to do charity work? No, I never have. Given the chance, would you volunteer with a local charity? No I don’t think so as I don’t have the time. If I did though, it would be with Inspire. If you could suggest an act of kindness for others to do during Christmas and beyond, what would it be? Christmas is a time to be with your family. If anyone is estranged from or fighting with any of their family members or friends, they should take the opportunity to make up.
Have you ever volunteered to do charity work? Yes, I’ve helped out at San Frangisk Animal Hospital. Given the chance, would you volunteer with a local charity? Yes I would. This time it would be one through which I could help people in need. If you could suggest an act of kindness for others to do during Christmas and beyond, what would it be? I would suggest making a donation to charity.
Elizabeth Rivera, Spain Mary Bray, Mosta Have you ever volunteered to do charity work? No I have not. Given the chance, would you volunteer with a local charity? No, as I don’t have the time, but if I did, I would volunteer with the SPCA. If you could suggest an act of kindness for others to do during Christmas and beyond, what would it be? Be more chartitable; people should help the poor and people in need.
Have you ever volunteered to do charity work? No I haven’t. Given the chance, would you volunteer with a local charity? Yes I would volunteer. I would like to volunteer with any charity that helps children in need. If you could suggest an act of kindness for others to do during Christmas and beyond, what would it be? I would suggest giving toys and love to children in need.
Luke Azzopardi, Victoria Dylan Muscat, Marsascala Have you ever volunteered to do charity work? No, I haven’t had the opportunity. Given the chance, would you volunteer with a local charity? Yes, I would volunteer with Inspire. If you could suggest an act of kindness for others to do during Christmas and beyond, what would it be? It would be nice to give presents to children living in a crèche.
LAST MONTH'S WINNING LETTER
Have you ever volunteered to do charity work? Yes, I have volunteered with OASI Foundation, helping people who are struggling with addiction. Given the chance, would you volunteer with a local charity? I would like to volunteer with Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, which promotes Maltese culture and heritage. If you could suggest an act of kindness for others to do during Christmas and beyond, what would it be? I would suggest making donations to orphanages.

A festive bucket list Every year at Christmas time, we vow to kick back and enjoy doing the things we want to do most, but often fail as hectic schedules get in the way. Not this year, however. Martina Said draws up a bucket list of things you should do before Christmas.
I
t is that time of year again, loved by many, and perhaps disliked by a few – a time when chaos, confusion and panic ahead of last minute everything sets in to our daily routines, at times robbing us of the joy and anticipation that the run up to Christmas could bring. The frantic search for gifts tends to last throughout most of December, and between queues of people waiting to pay and intense traffic jams that irritate everyone to no end, the notion of Christmas can leave
us feeling pretty wrung out. But it should not – this is a time of joy and merriment. Thanks to a few public holidays and some much needed time off, December and January are the months when we can do the things that we really want to. If you haven’t got a clue as to what those things are yet, then here are a few. They could take the form of a Christmas bucket list, so to speak, with simple gestures that embody the spirit of Christmas.
A movie marathon Not just any movie marathon, but a Christmas movie marathon. Many old and some new films can be thoroughly enjoyed during this time of year, and most are appropriate to enjoy with your children. There’s the alltime classic Scrooge (1970), a musical retelling Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale, Miracle on 34th Street (1947), Love Actually (2003), It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), Holiday Inn (1942) and The Polar Express (2004). Grab a mince pie (or three) and a glass of mulled wine, and enjoy the show.
Christmas carolling As kids, we are often roped in to participate in some form of carol singing, but the fun tends to fade as we get older. Reliving such memories with your friends or children later in life, however, could prove to be an equally rewarding

experience. Pick a few songs, rehearse them together (try get in tune) and go carolling in your neighbourhood. You may want to carol sing to simply spread some Christmas cheer, or in aid of a local charity, but either way, it is a time-honoured tradition that gets yourself and passersby into a festive mood.
Donate extra and unwanted toys Every household has a store of toys that are either no longer used from childhood, or are still new from the Christmas before. This is the right time of year to grab a bunch of those toys and donate them to the hospital’s children’s wing where they are sure to be put to better use. All toys cost money, including ones that were bought a number of years ago, and you could be surprised by how a little gesture on your part can mean so much to someone else. The staff and parents will surely thank you, and the children will be elated.
Cook Christmas lunch Our mothers and grandmothers have slaved away in the kitchen for long enough to prepare the best Christmas meal they possibly could. It is probably time to take the lead, at least for this year, and prepare a lavish Christmas meal for your family by yourself. Our predecessors did not always get it right the first time, so if you’ve never cooked in large quantities before (or roasted a turkey, for that matter) then simply ask for help. You could either turn to the hands that fed you for many years, or refer to a cook book, website or blog for trusty advice.
Mulled wine and chestnuts Mulled wine and roasted chestnuts are an integral part of Christmas. Mulled wine is dead simple to make and personifies the taste and feel of Christmas in a glass, with hints of festive spices such as cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Leave the mixture to warm up on a low fire and simply pour some into glasses when your guests start to arrive. As for the chestnuts, they are reminiscent of childhood and Christmas markets, and are traditionally cooked on an open fire in town centres. Bag yourself a portion of fresh chestnuts available from most supermarkets, and roast them on a fireplace flame or burner.
Make and post your own Christmas cards Mailing Christmas cards may be something you’ve stopped doing a while ago, or perhaps you opt for the same cards bought in bulk every year. This year, why not make and mail your own, even with the help of your children, nieces and nephews, especially if they enjoy getting their hands dirty?
Creating your own cards allows you to decorate them and impart the message that you want, and above all, they are personal. The materials you’ll require are basic – card, glue, scissors and any fancy bits and bobs you lay your hands on, making your cards visually appealing and one of a kind.

HOMES.
Festive Home DÉcor Martina Said gets some handy tips from the experts on how best to decorate your home for the upcoming festive season, without doing too little, or too much.
F
rom mad trolley runs at the supermarket to speed shopping for gifts for our loved ones, December really has become one of the busiest months of the year for many. But it’s also one of the most fulfilling in that we get to spend some down time with the people around us that matter and to catch up on much needed things around the house. Among those things is decorating the house in preparation for Christmas, and for those who love entertaining,
this is an especially important mission. Jonathan Bonnici at One Two One Interiors says the weeks before Christmas are filled with a pleasurable sense of anticipation. “Many homes really come into their own with a mixture of cherished inherited decorations, newly bought ones and some treasured antique finds. While I always like to adopt the less-is-more approach, at Christmas, sparkle and decadence help create the much awaited Christmas spirit, so that little something out of the ordinary is called for.”
Jonathan says that between travel plans and endless shopping lists, decorating your home should not be adding further stress. “Sticking with simple decorations will save you time and money. Rather than a clutter of holiday craft projects, try an artful decorative accent, like your favourite ornaments arranged in a bowl.” Importantly, you must work around the colour palette of your home for the chicest result: “if one has a neutral colour scheme then this is a perfect foil for a sparkling collection of festive decorations. On the other hand if your setting is one that already includes myriad colours then pick a favourite and use it for your decorations throughout. Also, while red and green is the classic colour combination, I like to look for decorations in other hues, such as gold, pink and navy blue for ornaments, wrapping paper and wreaths for a twist on tradition.” Alexandra Aquilina at JB Stores is in agreement, and says it has become more acceptable to use different colours in our choice of Christmas décor rather than the traditional red, green and gold. “Incorporate your room’s colour scheme into the décor – the trick is to incorporate metallic and glitter shades, lamé, gold and silver for an added festive effect. Popular colour combinations are royal blue with gold or Continued on page 10

silver; coral and aqua green with gold; purple with blue and silver; turquoise with lime; lime or turquoise with red; shades of vert de mer and aqua with touches of silver; pink with purple and silver; lime with purple and silver; magenta with black and touches of silver.” She recommends a touch of experimentation with non traditional items when decorating for a more modern
look. “Substitute beads with chains, tinsel with feather boas, and use patterned ribbons to tie your cutlery, or fancy organza around your chairs. The possibilities are endless!” She cautions against overdoing it, however, and planning beforehand will help you avoid this pitfall. “You don’t need every item in your room to be Christmas themed, as you risk falling into the trap of being too kitsch. Do, however, work some
elements into your current décor.”
patterns are also very in when it comes to interiors.”
Apart from Christmas décor, Alexandra says that modernising vintage trends is all the rage right now. “We are seeing more colours in our interiors in the form of brightly coloured accents on walls, curtains, cushions and carpets, all the while mixed with natural colours like white, beige, cream or grey. Large geometric
Jonathan continues that one of his favourite trends this season is what he refers to as the 'boutique hotel look' – “mixing traditional furniture and sumptuous materials with softly structured contemporary interior decorative accessories such as a modern lamp sitting on top of a restored piece of furniture, or a baroque style
antique mirror on top of a lacquered piece of modern furniture.” When decorating the more contemporary home, Jonathan recommends making use of a Scandinavian rustic theme. “This entails the use of less sparkle and more earthy ornaments that bring the outdoors in. In more traditional settings, add a little twist by introducing a bold colour such as an indigo or a fuchsia for a fresh, modern look, and take it across your decorations from co-ordinating gift wrapping, to the baubles on your tree and candles on your table.” With most of our attention on the dining table and living area, Jonathan suggests giving the bathroom a quick make-over too. "Try adding a candle or small bouquet of berries for a festive touch. But don't let anybody dictate your Christmas decorating decisions – your décor should reflect your personal style and preferences. Have fun and free your imagination.”
The Ultimate Dining Table The dining table is as important as the food that is laid on it on Christmas or New Year’s Day, therefore getting it right with the appropriate décor is paramount. “Along with the Christmas tree, decorating the dining table is one of the Christmas highlights,” says Jonathan Bonnici at One Two One Interiors. “Choose a table setting that enhances and does not compete with your décor. What’s most important is that you don't go for disposable silverware no matter how much of a Christmas spirit it seems to portray, and save the paper napkins for your children’s lunch boxes. If there's ever a time to bring out the good china, it's now. A beautiful table makes for a memorable family meal.” Alexandra Aquilina at JB Stores says “the centrepiece is one of the most important elements on our dinner table and is always nicest when homemade. Use artificial flowers, leaves, candles, feathers and let your creativity run wild. Always remember, however, to tie in with the rest of the theme of your décor.”

CHRISTMAS.
Time to Shop! Between scoffing down mince pies and glugging mulled wine (when the occasion arises), December is the month during which we need to get ourselves organised for the ultimate shopping spree. Here are Martina Said’s suggestions for gift ideas this Christmas. to settle for a subject that is of interest to the individual, such as cars, Maltese history, architecture, interior design, jewellery making or even a cookery book, and if you could get it signed by the author, it will be that much more special. If you’re shopping around for your couple friends, be sure to bear in mind their shared hobbies, interests and tastes. For that couple into decorating their home, for instance, an original piece of wall art, unique mantel clock, decorative centrepiece for the dining table or intricate vase for a coffee table might be a perfect addition to their
E
very year we silently vow to ourselves to think ahead for gift shopping and, almost every year, we tend to fall short of this vow. With lots of activities to do, events to attend and busy work schedules to work around, shopping ahead tends to place last on our list. With that in mind, getting your Christmas shopping done with maximum efficiency and success is indeed possible, if you prepare a shopping list in advance and know exactly what you’re looking for (without being too specific, as you could end up going round for hours on a hunt for an item that isn’t stocked locally). Picking the right gift sometimes requires thinking outside the box, and weighing what the person might want, rather than need – here are our suggestions. One of the first things to establish when drawing up your shopping list is your budget. Most people struggle with sticking to an allocated budget for gifts, thinking that an extra ¤20 here and there couldn’t possibly do much harm. Well, just like everything else, they also add up, and when you discover you’ve splurged a couple hundred more than you were hoping to at the end of your shopping spree, you probably won’t be pleased.
Allocating a budget per individual you’re buying for will help you narrow down your choice, and target items within range. It would also help to tentatively write down a list of things a person might like, their hobbies and interests so that you’ll know what to look out for while browsing the aisles. Consider a limited edition
book on an individual’s hobby if you know they appreciate precious hardbacks. Many tend to think that buying a book as a gift is an easy way out, but considering that the prices of books can soar into the multiple hundreds, especially when not many copies are printed, it could hardly be considered a quick fix. Be sure
home. If, on the other hand, you know that both are into cooking, you can opt for an item that is fitting for the kitchen – such as a set of innovative utensils, a waffle maker, a set of personalised mugs, monogrammed wine glasses, or even a cocktail making set. A cooking book

of their favourite cuisine is also a good idea and is sure to come in handy if they love entertaining. If you think they’ll appreciate something to chew on more than the hardware needed to make it, splash out on an assortment of delicacy chocolates or cheeses, a hamper of cured hams, a selection of gourmet olive oils
or a bento box filled with their favourite sweets. Food hampers always make great gifts, and gone are the days when they are limited to the same old, unpalatable pre-packed items that are left to expire until the following Christmas. Numerous local companies will allow you to personalise a hamper according to individual taste, filled with sweet and savoury goodies that could be enjoyed during the festive season and beyond. If you’re still weighing the options for your significant other’s gift, there’s a world of opportunity out there. I believe that Christmas is the right occasion to show your softer, more sentimental side – as against the more extravagant type of gift we tend to opt for on a birthday occasion in order to spoil them. Therefore, a personalised gift should tick all the right boxes – it could include tickets to their favourite show or for a brief getaway overseas, their signature perfume, a piece of wall art with their favourite quote on it or even a joint gift for both of you to enjoy together, such as a spa treatment or weekend break. Jewellery tends to be a favourite option at this time of year, often featuring hearts or stars in connection with the symbols of love and Christmas, but you could choose to be a cut above the rest with a personalised piece of jewellery that is specific to the tastes of the woman you are shopping for. The culture of hand-made items is growing locally, and it’s no longer difficult to come across nice, quality items that are one of a kind and perhaps also sentimental. You could opt for a vintage locket and leave it up to her to fill with a special picture, an engraved bracelet or bangle, or even a brooch with a sentimental symbol to wear with her favourite winter coat. If none of this has proven useful, then perhaps a gift voucher from one of his or her favourite clothing stores will do the trick. Everyone likes to spoil themselves at Christmas, and this could mean anything from splurging on a designer handbag to investing in a new gadget for the home.

CHRISTMAS.
A magical Christmas for your children Making Christmas special for your children is about so much more than presents on Christmas morning. Sarah Micallef discovers how to make some truly special memories with your kids this Christmas. every day, until they arrive at the cave in which Baby Jesus will be born. Regardless of your religious beliefs however, Christmas is a time to celebrate love and family, as well as giving, rather than receiving. Teach your kids kindness and generosity not just by giving gifts, but by giving time and attention to those around you. Help out at a charity to show your children the importance of giving back and helping those less fortunate than themselves, and reach out to friends and family you may not have seen in a while – it will help teach the kids to think of others other than just themselves.
A
s we count down the days (some of us more eagerly, thanks to the little treat or chocolate waiting in our advent calendar every morning), our thoughts turn to Christmas day and all that comes with it. But what do you think about when you think of Christmas? As an adult, it’s probably your hectic schedule, and the stress involved in coordinating myriad festive events and last-minute present shopping. But for your kids, it’s likely to be an entirely different story.
Christmas is a magical time for children. Just think back to Christmases when you were growing up – can you summon the smells, sounds and excitement tied to this time of year as a child? As a parent, it now falls to you to put your children at the centre of it all – not just by giving them gifts, but by involving them in festive traditions and teaching them the meaning of this special day, whatever your beliefs. If you’re a Christian, Christmas revolves around the birth
of Jesus, and while your children will likely know all about the story from school and catechism, it’s good to remind them the significance of commemorating the nativity. Most schools will put on a nativity play at this time of year, which will be fun for your kids to get involved in if they’re inclined towards drama and acting. At home, you can get the children to help set up the crib, and going a step further, you can even mimic Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem by moving the figurines a little
When all is said and done, Christmas should also be fun. Singing Christmas carols,
preparing tasty yuletide food and spending time decorating the house together are all ingredients that will make Christmas a treasured time for the whole family. Get the children to help you make fun treats like gingerbread men and let them go crazy with icing decorations – you’re bound to have a very messy kitchen afterwards, but also some very happy kids! Come up with your own Christmas traditions as a family when it comes to putting up decorations and give the kids something to look forward to when the time rolls around. Make some delicious hot chocolate and play a Christmas soundtrack while the kids make their own decorations, which will then be displayed proudly around the house. You can
even assign jobs when it comes to the pièce de résistance – decorating the tree. When I was growing up, my brother would be in charge of positioning the lights on the tree, while I would adorn it with bows and baubles. It’s a terrific bonding experience and will make for treasured memories as the kids grow up. The most important thing when it comes to making Christmas special for the little ones however is making it truly your own. There’s nothing better than creating personal family traditions, whether it’s leaving out milk and cookies for Santa (and carrots for Rudolph, of course), watching festive movies, making each other gifts or singing Christmas carols. Remember, the joys of childhood are not tied to material things but to experiences and activities, and celebrating Christmas in your own special way will guarantee beautiful memories for years to come.

Ringing in the New Year What are you doing this New Year’s Eve? Sarah Micallef explores some of the options available to ring in the New Year in style. different country will make for a special experience you’ll remember for years to come, and with most countries organising spectacular national celebrations on NYE, you’re bound to have a blast.
WEEKEND BREAK Taking a weekend or couple of days out to mark the New Year is another option you can choose to go for if relaxation is on your mind. After the parties, events and general stress that the festive season
can bring, particularly if you have kids to herd and schedules to organise, shooting off for a weekend break with your partner could be a welcome treat – be it local or abroad. Get the grandparents to babysit and take the time to enjoy one another’s company as 2015 begins.
A great way to enjoy New Year’s Eve on your own terms is throwing your own event. Whether it’s a mad house party or a sophisticated evening among friends and canapés is up to you, but when it comes to organising it, here are a few tips that might come in handy:
A
t some point in the beginning of December you’re bound to get asked, or the thought is sure to cross your mind – what are you doing for New Year’s Eve? A night that is incredibly divisive, New Year’s Eve is often either loved or hated. While it makes for the perfect excuse to get all dressed up and celebrate, the truth is that it is often overrated, and the parties and events held on the night may not be everyone’s cup of tea. That’s not to say you can’t enjoy your New Year’s Eve though – the trick is to choose the best way to celebrate it for you. And whether that’s a kiss from your loved one in the exclusive company of your pet cat at midnight, or suiting up and painting the town red at an
energetic party, is entirely up to you! Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate NYE this year.
PARTY THE NIGHT AWAY Come New Year’s Eve, you’re generally spoilt for choice if you’re in the mood for a good party. Get dressed to the nines and take your pick from events like Sky of Stars at Xara Lodge, Lights Out Casino Royale, YOUR NYE by Carl Bee, Samsara 2014 and The Veuve Clicquot NYE 2015 – they’re all set to ring in the New Year with a bang. If you’re keen on dancing the night away but prefer doing it at a smaller event, look out for more low-key parties catering for a smaller number of people.
DINING OUT If your partying days are behind
you, or you’re simply not in the mood to throw down on the dance floor this year, a luxurious meal at an upscale restaurant with your significant other or group of friends could go down a treat. Being a special occasion, you can opt to go somewhere a little more highend than you normally would, and with most restaurants offering up a special menu for New Year’s Eve, you can benefit from a delicious and specially-prepared experience – particularly if you’re a bit of a foodie.
GOING ABROAD Getting away from it all at this time of year is a great idea, particularly for those who have shutdown at work during the festive season. Ringing in the New Year in a
Plan in advance. NYE is a night most people plan for a little while ahead, so whether it’s rounding up your friends before they get the chance to make alternative plans or ensuring the caterer can take your booking, the earlier you get everything sorted, the better. Set the location. Unless you’re having it at your own home, finding an appropriate location for your party should be at the top of your list. Consider costs and potential parking hassles when making your decision. Provide entertainment. The last thing you want is for your NYE party to be boring. Ensure there is enough entertainment to keep people going until well after midnight – that’s when all the fun starts, after all. Buy extra. Always ensure you have more food and/or drink than you think you’ll need. Nothing shuts a party down faster than starving your guests or running out of alcohol. Create a countdown. Plan something special, like a shower of balloons or party poppers for the countdown, so that (heaven forbid!) it doesn’t go by without anyone noticing.

CHRISTMAS.
The ultimate combination Hampers have boomed in popularity in recent years – and for good reason: the variety they promise means you can find the perfect gift for even the most difficult of recipients. So, whether corporate or personal, Jo Caruana discovers why there’s no hampering the good old Christmas hamper.
I
can remember my first-ever Christmas hamper. I was doing work experience at the time and had helped a particular client out in the run up to the festive season. A few days after the job was done there was a knock on the door and there, a bit like Santa, stood a deliveryman with a large hamper.
I was thrilled! Chocolates, jams, crackers, alcohol… rummaging through that bottomless pit of goodies made it feel like Christmas really had come early, and I recall savouring every treat long into January. Years later and I am still a fan of the hamper; it is great to give and great to receive. And
that’s why hampers make a lot of sense, because everyone loves them. The good news for the gift-giver is that his or her present-related worries will be solved, while the receiver is bound to find something he or she really likes among the selection given. One of the most appealing benefits when giving a hamper is the sheer choice of products available; you’re in control when it comes to contents, style and price. You can find one to suit the fussy foodie, person with a sweet tooth, savoury fanatic and, of course, the alcohol aficionado. “When it comes to the right hamper, we know that people have very different needs and tastes,” explains Jessica Shah, head of foods at Marks and Spencer Malta. “Thus we have put a lot of thought into creating a range of price points so that there’s something for everyone, as well as a range of combinations. For instance, you could choose a wine jute or little hamper as a thank you gift, while our indulgent food and drinks hampers could also be the ideal luxury gift when you need to give something special. “Beyond that, we have also added three new hampers this year and they are designed a

CHRISTMAS.
little differently because they’re not typically Christmassy,” continues Jessica. “They incorporate family favourites such as tea and biscuits, a chocolate and coffee hamper, and an Italian selection. They’re great because this means that you can choose items that you know your friends or family are particularly partial to.”
“You can find a hamper to suit the fussy foodie, person with a sweet Tooth, savoury fanatic and, of course, the alcohol aficionado.”
In addition, there’s the bespoke element that helps to make hampers the ideal gift. If you know that a friend likes chocolate, for instance, you can wander the shop looking
for chocolate-related items, and put them all together in a festive chocaholic feast. The same goes for savoury items, alcohol, fresh fruit and other foods, while you could always
pop other gifts in there to make the result stand out more, such as soaps, toiletries, kitchen utensils or home accessories. The sky is literally the limit. Hampers also make ideal corporate gifts, especially if you’re in doubt over what a particular client or supplier will like. After all, if you don’t know someone very well, then having to pick a single gift for them can seem pretty daunting. “Our range of hamper products combines a very wide choice,” explains Gordon Mizzi at Farsonsdirect. “We offer a large selection of wines, spirits, gourmet food and confectionery items, so you can be sure to include something for everyone – whether you’re creating a hamper for one
person, or for an office full of people. “And for those clients who deserve something really special, our Premium Hampers include items such as single malts, champagne and fine wines. Plus, we’ve introduced three new products this year, namely the Naked Grouse, the Black Grouse Alpha
Edition and the new Chivas Gentleman Bremont Edition. Choosing the perfect items is definitely part of the fun; come and explore, and relish the chance to create a gift that truly is bespoke.”
Once you’ve decided to give Christmas hampers as a gift, then you can get down to the fun of deciding what goes in them. Here are some tips to help you choose. As an alternative to buying a ready-made hamper, you could choose to create your own. Pop round the shops to pick items from your favourite suppliers, then pack them together in a wicker basket or pretty box. As an alternative to baskets or boxes, use a plate or serving tray, which, in itself, will become one of the gifts within the hamper. Crepe paper and shredded paper work well to line the bottom of a hamper. Add some glamour by mixing in sequins and glitter for a festive feel. Wrap your hamper in coloured cellophane to give it a polished look. If you want it to look really professional, use a hairdryer on the plastic so that it shrink-wraps perfectly.

As a package, the Chevrolet Spark is difficult to beat
D
riving the Spark made me realise how competitive small city cars have become, how practical and comfortable a small car can be and how logical it is to invest in a small car that drives well, is spacious, well-equipped and comes at a bargain price. The Chevrolet Spark drives impressively well. Its handling is a lot better than most cars in its class. The driver’s position is supreme as it is pretty high up, which makes the ride comfortable and visibility easy. It is easy to park and it handles itself very well on our challenging roads. It comes in five-doors and is surprisingly spacious both for the driver and the front passenger, as
well as for the passengers at the back. The boot is not huge but considering the nature of the car – a small city car – it is spacious enough. The car is also rated highly for safety and has dual and side air bags, as well as six roof airbags and comes with an ABS braking system as standard. It is also very economical with Chevrolet estimating that it consumes just over five litres for every 100 km. It is also cheap to run with an annual road tax of just €120. As a package, I dare say the Spark is very difficult to beat. It has a very decent package of standard features which include metallic colour, a sound
system with four speakers, power steering, coloured bumpers, air-conditioning, rear fog lamp, central locking, ABS, tinted glass, roof spoiler, electric windows, front and rear headrests, dual and side airbags, six roof airbags, rear wiper, split rear seats, traction control and blue tooth. It comes with a 1.0ltr petrol engine and it delivers almost 70bhp, which is pretty good for a car of its size and weight. The Chevrolet Spark sells for only €8,900 including three years warranty on mechanical parts and a six-year warranty on rust. As already stated, in terms of an all-round package, it is very difficult to beat the Spark if you put into the
equation the fact that you are buying a brand new car, it looks good (objectively speaking if one compares the Spark with its competitors in its class, the car looks pretty good and hasn’t got the dullness most often associated with compact city/budget cars), you are getting a five-door Chevrolet and it comes with an extensive list of standard equipment. Weigh all these attributes in with its price and it’s a no brainer really – you’re definitely getting value for your money here. You can view the Chevrolet Spark at GasanZammit Motors Ltd at Gasan Centre, Mriehel Bypass, Mriehel.
For more information call 2778 8200 or email info@ gasanzammit.com
BEST BUY VERDICT: A brand-new city car for the price of a second-hand car with high mileage on the clock. The Chevrolet Spark is a no brainer when it comes to the value you’re getting for the money you’re paying. It drives well, it is well equipped and it comes with a very generous list of standard equipment. The Chevrolet Spark is certainly a strong contender in its class.

A Message of Love Although their Malta Eurovision Song ConteSt entry, Love and Let Go, didn’t secure the top spot, the Ekklesia Sisters still achieved what they hoped to – awareness about their work. They chat to Jo Caruana about their exciting experience in the competition.
W
hen the ‘singing nuns’, the Ekklesia Sisters, shot to fame a few weeks ago, fans were thrilled by their unique approach. Many loved the simplistic song that they entered into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and hoped it would sweep to the top of the competition. They also fell for the sweet smiles and gentle manners of the six sisters concerned – Sr Magdalene, Sr Rita, Sr Michaela, Sr Denise, Sr Claudia and Sr Monica. But, although the song didn’t synch first place after all, the sisters are still thrilled to have raised plenty of awareness about the work that they do – caring for children in the care homes they help to run. Here they explain how being part of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has changed their lives and brought about a new level of awareness about the work that they do. Tell me a little about your day-to-day roles… We are Ursuline Sisters. Primarily we are called to follow Jesus and, as a result of our relationship with Him, are filled with his love. It is our calling to take care of children from birth to adulthood in five different
homes in Malta. These children are brought to us because of difficulties within their birth families or because they have been through some sort of abuse. We do everything we can to ensure they are well taken care of, both psychically and emotionally. What made you want to take part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest? Two years ago we were invited to take part in Xarabank, by presenter Peppi Azzopardi. It was then that he suggested we take part, and the idea resonated a little. Then, last August, songwriter Philip Vella approached us with his idea about lyrics based on the lives of the children we take care of, and thus the song was born. How has the Malta Eurovision Song Contest changed your lives? The run up to the competition was very hectic. It was a particular challenge because

we still continued our day-today work with the children, and gave them our full attention. But, naturally, we also had to find time to rehearse – and it was sometimes difficult to get all six of us together! But we did manage, and we are so pleased to have reached the very heart of the Maltese people. We were amazed by their warm response. We have also made many new friends and numerous young people have asked for our help. It is very pleasing to know that this effort has brought awareness of the work that we do. What did you think of your performance? There were a few technical hitches but we are still very satisfied at having been able to spread our message of love. How do you feel the song is relevant to your work as nuns? The song describes our everyday lives with the children in our care. Spreading love is what we aim to do on a daily basis, and to give much-needed care to these growing children and young people. We feel that the song was an excellent representation of what we do. Christmas is coming – why is this a time of significance for you? Christmas is primarily significant to us because Jesus, our saviour, and the love of our life, took on our human nature and was born to save mankind. It is a joyful time which we celebrate happily with the children in our care. What is the highlight of Christmas for you? We sing during Christmas Eve mass and really treasure this beautiful occasion. On Christmas Day we try to see that all the children spend quality time with their families or with the other families they usually visit on weekends. As sisters, we spend Christmas together in our community, as this has become our family. We have lots of fun together and laughter is never lacking. What sort of music do you normally listen to? We listen to all kinds of music, and have different tastes. When it comes to the other songs in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, we thought they were all fantastic and it would be impossible for us to pick a favourite; they all deserved to win!

da Luigi Restaurant Run by a locally born and brought up family who knows its grass roots right in the heart of this ancient village of Rabat, Da Luigi lies a stone's throw away from the medieval capital city of Mdina. Louis, who owns and runs this culinary outlet, is the third generation of well renowned local bakers. He passionately recalls the days of their local bakery using traditional methods and the best of handpicked ingredients. Such traditions almost vanished when machinery took over due to industrial progress, when baking was no longer a passion but a mass production activity. It was this drive and passion for cooking which led Louis to embark on this culinary adventure, with the intention of reviving traditional recipes. Food is mostly appreciated when accompanied with the appropriate wines. This menu takes you through a journey of wines from different continents, notwithstanding our local line of wines which we proudly present. Da Luigi also provides a platform for artists who get inspired by its mystic location overlooking a picturesque valley. Browse through our menu where you will find a range of local and international dishes, and do feel free to ask us to prepare anything particular – it will be our pleasure to assist. Kindly be advised that orders will take longer to be completed since all food is freshly made, and your patience is greatly appreciated. Bon appétit! Opening Times: Monday closed/Tue to Sat 7–11pm/ Sun Lunch 12–3.30pm/Dinner 7-11pm. Optional: Open for lunch by reservation only Wed-Fri for small groups over 8 persons. Glormu Dingli Street, Rabat. Sicily to Maltese travelling in their own car or bike. If it is the countryside that you most enjoy, this is the time of year to visit. The lakes and rivers are at their best, just waiting to be explored and never far from your base, in fact never far from home.
