INTERVIEW
XFM’s dynamic duo talk work, life and gadgets
9
XFM Big Breakfast jokers David ‘Oz’ Borg and Jason ‘Jay’ Zammit are loved by many for their hilarious banter and morning mischief. Here, they chat with Sarah Micallef about getting out of bed at silly o’clock, their favourite gadgets, and what seriously ticks them off! What does your typical day involve? Jay: It starts with the incredibly difficult task of waking up! I get ready in the dark because my wife and ten-month-old baby would still be fast asleep. I usually grab an apple if I’m late, which is four out of five mornings, head to the station where Oz would have already brewed the teas, done his business and set up the first commercial advert break – and this is still before 6.30am, don’t forget! But the breakfast show is great fun and we love doing it. After the show, Oz leaves and my real work begins as Station Manager of XFM 100.2. This includes client meetings, music schedules, DJ rosters and content, competitions, ad campaigns and their schedules, marketing meetings and taking out the rubbish – very glamorous! I normally get home by about 4.30pm and relieve my wife of at least one of our two boys so she can
have a break, which usually consists of cooking for us! She’s the best. Oz: The alarm goes off at 5am and I drag my large behind out of bed at around 5.20am. I grab a shower, and my senses, and it’s off to XFM. I do the four-hour breakfast show with Jay, then off to career number two. I work till around 7pm and head home to spend time with the family. At least, that’s how I was last year. This year I get home in the early afternoon a couple of days a week and try to chill. What’s the best and worst part of your job? Jay: The best part is the feeling of satisfaction that comes from knowing you are making a difference in the mood of thousands of people every morning, and maybe even indirectly helping a few with more personal issues or problems. Oh, and then
there’s the fact that we get to play killer tunes on the radio for a living. The toughest part is keeping up with all the deadlines and keeping everyone happy, especially clients! Oz: The best part of my radio presenter job is probably hanging with Jay for four hours a day, whilst being able to vent some of my frustrations regarding modern day society. The toughest part is waking up at 5am. Are you a fan of gadgets? Can you remember the first gadget that caught your eye? Jay: Oz is definitely the tech geek of the show, but I am to a certain extent. It doesn’t really take over my life as much as it does a lot of guys. Perhaps they feel the need to overcompensate for something? The first gadget I had to have was my very first Sony Walkman. In fact, I was a little
too young for my parents to spend that much on me and I recall them getting me a Sanyo (close enough I guess) but it wasn’t yellow like the one I wanted. Anyway, it was the coolest and allowed me to listen to all the music I couldn’t really listen to at home! I first heard Eddie Murphy’s ‘Delirious’ on that Walkman – good times! Oz: I am a huge fan of gadgets. If I could spend all my time and money on gadgets and tech, I definitely would. My first real
gadget was the Sony Walkman back in the mid ‘80s. That thing was the best. I would spend all day with those headphones in my ear, rockin’ out! What is your current favourite gadget that you own? Jay: My car I guess? It’s the newest thing I own and it has all the bells and whistles. I had my last car for 17 years and the only extra it had was a power sun-roof! Oz: This is probably a bit

INTERVIEW but when I do, I love watching sports – football, rugby, Formula 1 or any sport I can find. I try to get in as much as I can on the weekend whilst trying not to ignore the fact that I have a family. Do you have any pet peeves? Jay: The one thing that drives me bat $*%T crazy is ignorance and disregard for others. I just can’t tolerate it. I’m outspoken and a lot of the time my candour gets me in trouble. I think most people misunderstand my tone or comments as sarcasm or condescension, but I really have nothing but the best intentions at heart. Oh, and people who litter or pollute – they need to be punished!
of a cliché answer, but it is still my mobile phone – the Samsung Galaxy S6. Everything I need for my day, both for work and as a fun gadget. New tech and gadgets hit the shelves every day. What is currently at the top of your wish list? Jay: I saw an 85” 4K TV last
weekend and thought it would make a lovely addition to our family room. I’ve also always wanted a 3D printer. I break a lot of stuff at home, so I think it might come in handy. Oz: Next on my list is the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. One of my friends has it and it’s super amazing. I might have to
sell a kidney for that one. What do you enjoy doing during your time off? Jay: Nothing! Literally. Though I do miss travelling. Having two young kids makes travel very hard. Oz: I don’t really get a lot of that thing you call ‘time off’,
Oz: I have what you might call a mild case of OCD, so the list of pet peeves and things that bother me is way too long to mention. I will say this – I like organisation. What is something you’d like to tick off your bucket list in 2017? Jay: Losing 20 kilos! Well, it’s either that or a threesome involving Dua Lipa, but the wife’s not too keen on that one.
Oz: Probably getting my motorcycle license. I used to ride motorcycles in my teenage years off-road, but never went beyond that. So I want that feeling of my youth again. Are there any new projects in the pipeline? Jay: Yes indeed! I can’t reveal too much, but a massive prize giveaway is on the horizon, along with some fresh new talent on the Maltese airwaves (and internet streams) in the coming months. Oz and I are also involved in a fundraiser this April, for which all profits will be going to the Ursuline Sisters Crèche in Sliema. It’s the second year we’re hosting the event and if anyone would like to attend or donate, you can find the info on our Facebook pages. Oz: I’m always thinking of ways and means to improve, and continue to help Jay and the team develop XFM as a brand, to make it the best that it can be. Tune in to Oz and Jay on XFM 100.2 for The Big Breakfast, Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 10.30am. BB

TURN THE HEAT DOWN
The Heart of the Home
Few spaces in your home will have as many roles to play as your kitchen, so it’s important to get it right. Jo Caruana discovers the very latest kitchen trends for every aspect of this busy room.
Y
our kitchen is likely to be one of the most dynamic spaces within your home. For the most part, of course, it’s a place for rustling up recipes and feeding your family, for busily chucking a meal together with the leftover ingredients in your fridge, or, on calmer days, for immersing yourself in the enjoyment of creating something really delicious, perhaps a baking project or something for a special occasion. But its role doesn’t stop there; most busy kitchens also need to be places you can work quietly when you need to, casually chat to friends around the kitchen table, and even entertain guests in a more formal setting. This is a room that needs to morph effortlessly from one function into another. With all of that in mind, kitchen designers have come to think of innovative ways to make these spaces all the more dynamic. Gone are the days when kitchens were simply about eating; today they’re designed to be multifunctional and inspiring, and to make us want to spend as much time in them as possible. So if you’re thinking of designing a kitchen in 2017, or even if you simply want to incorporate some new trends
and to make it more practical and exciting, these are some of the ones to look out for.
Clean And Clutter-Free
Kitchens tend to become the general dogsbodies of mess – the place where everything collects. But decluttering your countertops can actually make a huge difference to the way your kitchen functions, and bring it right on trend for the season to come. The latest cabinet designs can help make this a reality too, with nifty compartments and shelves that keep everything out of sight – from your oils, herbs and spices to your paper towels and coffee pot. This approach will also make the room look larger and more inviting, which could, in turn, make you want to spend more time in it cooking up a storm!
Dark Floors
Most people tend to opt for lighter-coloured kitchen floors because they believe it will make the space look bigger and brighter. But the latest trends show otherwise, and there’s a move towards choosing darker floors, in tile or wood finishes instead, perhaps as a contrast to white or light cupboards and cabinets. The overall effect created is much cosier too.
Arctic Air Conditioners are guaranteed to set the temperature right for you. Equipped with the latest energy-saving inverters, these A++ sleek and stylish air conditioners are super silent, making sure you’re not disturbed in any way. The indoor unit provides a temperature display, several mode functions including cooling, heating, three different speed settings, as well as timer function. Available in three BTU sizes to cater for rooms of all sizes at unbeatable prices, with a fiveyear warranty on all parts and labour. A&A Mizzi Limited. T: 2148 8160; E: info@aamizzi.com
DRINKING WATER FROM THE TAP Plastic bottles are not sustainable. When you stop using disposable bottled water, you save money, live healthier, and join a movement for global sustainability. An Ecosoft Reverse Osmosis system helps you do this by providing unlimited pure, affordable drinking water straight from a tap. The Ecosoft under-sink unit is a five-stage water purifying system, which comes with a 10ltr plastic Kemflo storage tank that fills in just over one hour. Models are also available for semicommercial use and for locations where larger amounts of purified water are required. The heavy-duty pump carries a five-year warranty on the motor. Magic of Monochrome
When it comes to colour combinations for the year to come, monochrome is back with a bang. Stylists are blending tones of black and white in interesting designs, whether it’s whole cabinets or worktops, or accents used in appliances or kitchen accessories. And, while black and white have always been on-trend, it’s the addition of interesting grey tones that will really refresh this look for 2017.
English Charm
Locally, we tend to look to the Italians for design inspiration, but the appeal of the good old English cottage is one of the trends that is sticking around for this year. It’s a far cry from minimalism and flawless shine – instead, English country kitchens tend to be warm, welcoming and a little shabby-

chic, with traditional wooden cabinetry and countertops, painted door knobs and pretty mismatched accessories.
Copper Hues
Stainless steel has been the metal of choice in the kitchen for a while now, but that is set to change this year. In its place comes copper, which perfectly complements the earthy, grey tones that are also in vogue. Copper can really add an interesting accent to a space, whether it is used in coloured handles, accessories or appliances.
All The Range
If you enjoy cooking and entertaining, then a range cooker is likely to be top of your must-have list for your kitchen. Yes, ranges are more expensive, but they’re worth shelling out for. Not only do they add value to your kitchen because they look so striking, but they can make your life much easier. Most ranges include five or six burners, two ovens and a grill — although the most expensive models can be even bigger than that — which will really come in handy when cooking for a large family or lots of guests.
TechnologyDriven
As with most parts of our home, the kitchen is becoming ever-more technological. Moving on from dustbins that open with the wave of a hand and see-through toasters that let you keep an eye on how
brown your toast is getting, the very latest developments will make it even easier for you to communicate with your appliances using your phone or another mobile device. ‘Smart kettles’, for instance, are all the rage – they can start boiling before you even get out of bed,
making sure the water is ready for the cup of coffee you need to face the day. Other devices for the smart kitchen include fridges that message you when food is running out, and chopping boards that inform you of your meal’s nutritional content. Now that’s tasty! BB

Embarking on a full house renovation or home finishing project is no easy feat, and with so much to get done, where do you start? Before the panic sets in, let Sarah Micallef, a first-time buyer who’s fresh from her own home renovation, point you in the right direction.
I
f you’ve just bought an unconverted property or a new build that’s still in shell form, you’re bound to already know that there’s a long journey ahead. And with so much going into a renovation or finishing project – from designing and budgeting to plumbing, electricity, tiling, gypsum and all manner of other things – it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed. But don’t fret! Knowing where to start, and having a rough idea of all the works that need to be done, stage by stage, is half the battle won, and can go a long way to keeping you organised… and, let’s face it, sane! When we purchased our home – an unconverted house of character – the only thing we knew was that there was a lot to do, and that it wouldn’t be easy. I would be lying if I told you there won’t be times when you start to question whether it’s all worth it and you’re tempted to throw in the towel, but as every home owner who has been through the process will tell you, stick with it – it is definitely worth it!
Now, let’s get you organised. Your first order of business should be planning out your rooms and how they will be used. While it might be difficult to imagine at this stage, having a good idea of your room layouts, including basic furniture positioning is vital, as this will determine how your electricity and plumbing will be laid out. The project will start with structural works. Whether you’re tearing down walls, opening up windows or building an extension to your existing property, your builders will be the first workers on site. This stage comes first as all other stages depend on it, and be prepared for the chaos it brings. If you’re converting an old house, this is where it becomes a building site, so be brave: it will look a whole lot worse before it starts to look better. The next phase is plumbing and electricity, and this is where the layouts I mentioned earlier will come in handy. Detailed diagrams outlining where all

your wiring, plumbing, electrical points, switches and water outlets will go are utilised here, and it is also at
this stage that you need to lay the groundwork for any AC units, intercoms and networks you will require, so as to avoid
having to dig into the walls again later – a messy and unnecessary expense.
Tips from my personal experience
Next comes waterproofing and insulation of the roof and any outdoor areas, followed by apertures, if it’s a new build. If you have an older house in which you’ve opened up windows or made them larger however, you might need to wait a little longer till you order your apertures – at least until the walls have been finished or plastered. Any variation in opening size thanks to uneven old walls could throw the previous window measurements out the, well, window! Once this is done, it’s time to move on to finishing the outside walls, followed by the indoor walls. Next, the flooring will go down, and bathrooms tiled, with fixtures being installed soon after. With all this in place, you can finally move on to the final phase – furnishing. The house is as good as set once you’ve got your fixed furniture installed (like your kitchen, for example), leaving you to focus on the fun stuff – making your new house a home! BB
• If you’re converting an older property, allow for even more contingency than you would with a new build, both in terms of time and money. You really never know what you’re going to find once you get going. • Add insulation wherever you can, especially if making openings (windows and doors) larger than they were originally. • Insulate your roof well – this is a major source of heat loss in winter and of the house warming up in summer. • As I already mentioned but can’t stress enough, plan well in advance. This is crucial – it’s far more expensive to bring people back in than it is to have them do all the work at one go. • Keep the building in mind when planning, not an ideal fairy tale scenario. Remember, what might be possible in a new house might not make sense in an existing building!

Model images supplied by Funky Shades
Bernard Gauci & Ruth Attard
Beyond the Ordinary Martina Said chats to Bernard Gauci and Ruth Attard, artistic and creative directors at Funky Shades hair and beauty salon, to find out the secret behind the salon’s success and the trends to look out for this year.
F
unky Shades has been in business for over 14 years, thanks to the vision of its founder, Bernard Gauci, who’s been passionate about hairdressing since he was a boy. “It all started in 2002 after Bernard decided to pursue a career in hairdressing,” says Ruth Attard who, together with Bernard, is co-artistic and creative director at Funky Shades. “Bernard has been interested in hairdressing since the tender age of 12, when he started offering his services for free to family and friends. After completing his advanced certificates and diploma in hairdressing, he was selected among other fellow students who graduated in his year to start tutoring at the Goldwell Management Academy in Malta.” Throughout the years, Bernard was involved in various hair shows, including the Goldwell Awards, and constantly sought to further his knowledge in the art of hairdressing, specialising in new and avant-garde colouring techniques. One of Bernard’s career highlights
came in 2005 during the annual Fudge colour and cutting seminar in Malta, when he was named the recipient, among leading hairstylists in Malta, of an all-inclusive scholarship at the Fudge Academy in Manchester. “Later that year, he opened his first salon, where he spent three years managing his own business,” says Ruth. “An ever-increasing demand for his services encouraged him to move into a bigger salon where he directed a larger group of hair stylists and colour technicians, as well as nail technicians and make-up artists to offer a wider range of services from one salon.” In 2011, Bernard travelled to Naples to represent Goldwell during a fashion show for new and upcoming fashion stylists. Two years later, he accompanied YADA Dance Company to San Francisco as the leading hair stylist for their show Dance Rush. “Bernard strives to understand all his clients’ needs while paying attention to detail – this quality has been key in his success as a hairdresser.”
In keeping with his current way of doing things, Bernard’s inspiration behind the salon’s name and brand was influenced by the trends which surrounded him when he was starting out in the industry. “He was greatly inspired by the 90s, when there was a niche for a hip, upcoming and trendy salon. After a lot of thought, he came up with the word ‘funky’ which was the essence of 90s style,” says Ruth. “Bernard felt that the name of the salon reflected his techniques and craftsmanship. Also, his experience in experimenting with different colouring techniques brought about the term ‘shades’ – avant-garde styles paired with colouring techniques gave birth to the brand ‘Funky Shades’.” Funky Shades salon boasts an enthusiastic, fresh and young professional team, whose efforts are focused on complete transformative re-styling, the art of colour, including corrective colour and dimensional foil highlighting, all types of up-styles, Brazilian treatments, and real hair extensions. “The emphasis
is on offering our clients that extra edge in order to enhance their outer beauty whilst making sure that this is reflected in themselves. The salon’s motto is, “Nobody leaves our salon if they’re not completely satisfied with the results!” The team offers thorough and expert consultations before the start of any service. Clients know exactly what to expect and will be given enough attention in order to ensure the best end results possible. All of this in a fun, uplifting and friendly atmosphere.” Bernard asserts that the staff at Funky Shades continually undergoes training and mentoring in order to ensure that the every member can keep abreast with current trends. “It is a must for staff to attend several workshops and training seminars on an annual basis, and the directors also do in-house mentoring and educational programmes on a monthly basis. The team here was hand-picked after thorough training sessions and all the work done at the salon reflects this philosophy
through exceptional customer service. Beauty treatments, nail treatments, cleansing and weight management programmes are also offered at Funky Shades hair salon, which makes it a one-stop shop for any clients’ beauty and wellbeing needs.” When Bernard first started, his aim was to learn as much as possible in order to pass all his knowledge onto his clients through his work. “Frequently, clients ask for services that would not be suitable for their hair type,” he says. “All the team ensures that whatever service is offered at the salon needs to be manageable and safe for the client. Consultations and explanations about the effects of particular treatments has earned the team respect, as clients know that whatever is being said or done, will ultimately result in the best treatment for them.” Throughout the years, Bernard has witnessed an endless number of transformations taking place before him, as well as the satisfaction expressed by clients

who are thrilled with the results. To this end, he adds, “Funky Shades boasts about its professionalism whilst remaining grounded and maintaining a solid and focused ideology.” Another major milestone for the salon was when Ruth teamed up with Bernard as one of the directors of Funky Shades and moved to even larger premises in Zebbug in
2015. The salon was given a classic yet modern twist whilst maintaining its original vibe. Besides offering a range of hair styling treatments, Funky Shades also specialises in all-encompassing wedding packages, including hair, make-up and nails, as well as cleansing and weight management treatments. What are the top bridal trends to look out for this year in the hair and beauty world? “Soft, sun-kissed waves are the most sought-after look in 2017, but a bride’s choice of hair style will need to complement various other factors, including the wedding dress, shoes, accessories, venue, flowers and overall theme,” Ruth and Bernard explain. “The team always starts by trying to get as much information as possible in this regard. Also, we don’t worry about numbers – so whether it is the bride, groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, maid of honour, mother of the bride, or the whole bridal party, Funky Shades is equipped to offer the best possible solution for everyone. Top hair colour trends of 2017
Funky Shades rounds up the top trends expected to make a splash this year. • Bloranage: a colour between blonde and ginger with warm peach and strawberry blonde tones. This is expected to be extremely popular. • Grey hybrid hair, grounded by a solid inch of nearly black roots is also highly requested. An all grey colour remains popular, eliminating any brass or yellow tones by using silver shampoo. • Ash brown colour is gaining ground, while platinum blonde, hair that looks white rather than yellow, is always in demand. • Bronde, a colour that sparkles in the light and appears chocolatey in low light is also quite a hit, and is exquisite! • Overgrown roots: instead of an inch of growth, expect to see a solid five-inch chunk between the root and colour. • Red brown: shades in between full blown auburn and soft brunettes. Chestnut ends are also in vogue, which fade from a rich chocolate brown to a warm chestnut – not quite red, not quite brown. • Crazy colours and pastels: mermaid blue is on-trend in 2017, as are purple and pink and a variety of pastel colours such as lavender, soft pink and pale peach. Look out for nude hair too, where both cool and warm colours reduce each other’s tones to create a neutral colour. BB

EXCELLENCE IN WEDDING PLANNING
WORLD OF WEDDINGS
From translucent cakes to metallic details, there are lots of pleasant surprises to anticipate in the wedding-sphere this year. Martina Said brings you some of the best. Colours over neutrals
After dominating the world of weddings, neutral colours have paved the way for bright colours, or colour pairings, that are vibrant and earthy. The main one is Greenery, which is Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2017. The lively yet calming hue is perfect for all seasons – it’s fresh, symbolic in its reference to nature and the outdoors, and a little out of the ordinary for a wedding colour, which makes it that much more exciting and special. If you’re not one to shy away from bright colours, then this is your year to embrace the movement.
Soft silhouettes
If you’re planning a summer wedding, you’ll be glad designers showcased such breezy designs in their 2017 collections. Airy skirts and wind-swept silhouettes replaced form-fitting designs in lush, ethereal fabrics, such as soft tulle and organza, suitable for the bride and her bridal party. Ideal for a destination wedding or even as a second dress for the bride, detachable skirts, offshoulder dresses and lots of floral embellishments are all the rage.
Metallic details
Copper, rose gold and silver are versatile metallic colours that can be adapted to any style of wedding, and almost never get old. They’re a timeless option for wedding décor, but use them wisely – too much shine could kill the classiness of your venue and detract attention from all the other details you painstakingly chose for your big day. For table linens, for instance, rather than using metallic tablecloths throughout the whole venue, save them for the main displays, such as the cake and guestbook tables. Bridal runways were filled with shimmery gowns too, making gold or silver a current choice for bridal party wear. Think neutral tones with metallic beading or accents rather than head-to-toe shine and shimmer.
Turn up the tech
Lights can make all the difference between an ordinary and extraordinary wedding venue. While the more affordable light options such as fairy lights and white lanterns will never cease to be effective, vivid and hightech lighting techniques are starting to gain popularity, which means that they’ll soon become more affordable. Some of these include pattern projection, hanging

Bespoke Wedding cakes
We make beautiful bespoke cakes for weddings and all types of celebrations. Each cake is handmade to order, using only the finest, freshest ingredients. Almond cake used to be the traditional choice for weddings, but more clients are opting for sponge cakes in flavours such as chocolate, lemon or mocha. As for decoration, soft shades of pink, metallic colours and vintage wedding settings are trending in 2017, but we will create the cake entirely to your specifications and desires. We also offer cupcakes, iced cookies and macaroons which can be placed on a dessert table or wrapped up individually as favours. Lemon Tree Cakery, Villa Delfina, Triq ix-Xbiek, Bahar ic-Caghaq. lights and gobos, the latter being stencils that, when light passes through them, are projected as images onto a surface, such as the couple’s initials. If you’re opting for a night-time do, don’t forget to decorate with candles; it’s the softest and most romantic of lighting décor options.
Food on the move
The majority of Maltese weddings are not confined to long dinner tables, which means that food stalls and food trucks at wedding
receptions are not exactly a novelty. However, couples are increasingly creating stations of their own, ones which reflect a shared love for a particular food item, menu or cuisine, and that are tailor-made to their experiences as a couple. Think wine and cheese pairings with an on-site sommelier, a bar with fresh seafood (beware of this during the sweltering summer months), as well as a buildyour-own bar for tacos, hot dogs, pancakes or whatever item calls out to you as a couple.
Remember naked cakes, the ones with a slick of buttercream between layers? They’re being replaced by the slightly more modest translucent cake, which is the latest development in the sphere of wedding desserts. Not fully frosted but not quite as bare, the almost-naked cake is a balance between the two and an ideal choice for those couples whose wedding planning choices are a little less traditional. Instead of completely bare tiers, translucent cakes have a thin layer of frosting with a hint of cake showing underneath, and are typically topped with fresh fruit and flowers for decoration.
Customised invites
Wedding invites are no longer limited to black or gold calligraphy on cream paper – there’s a world of options available, and better still, a limitless variety of stationery to customise your wedding correspondence. From Plexiglas invites and foil stamping to glow-in-the-dark ink and bespoke illustrations, there are many ways to communicate your message in a way that best reflects your
personality as well as your partner’s.
and a little out of the ordinary will do, so get creative.
Nature-inspired décor
Venue hunting
Wedding décor trends are increasingly turning to nature for a healthy dose of inspiration. If your wedding venue is indoors-only, bring the outdoors in with potted trees, hanging greenery, wooden accents and propped up bouquets all around the venue. Add touches of nature to various other aspects of the wedding too, such as the groom’s boutonniere, the flower girls’ head pieces as well as the bride’s and bridal party’s bouquets. Wild and colourful floral combinations will make the entire wedding feel like one big spring-time party.
Grand entrances or getaways
Who needs a car when you can use a horse? Grand exits, or entrances if you prefer, are replacing the good old send-off in an old and battered car. Use a motorcycle if you know how to drive one, a horse-drawn carriage, a showstopping classic car, a boat if your wedding is by the water, or a helicopter if your budget permits. Anything that is grand
Couples are increasingly opting for venues that are not an obvious choice, giving grand palazzos and lush gardens a run for their money. Think historic houses, openair spaces, intimate villas, vineyards and other immersive experiences which couples want their guests to revel in. It’s not just about having a wedding, but about taking guests on a memorable journey which they’ll likely never forget. BB

Luke Borg, Director, Mattress Collection
Mattress Collection: giving you a great night’s sleep
M
attress Collection is the brainchild of brothers Luke and Clayton Borg, who were struck with the idea for their company during a trip abroad some years back. “While visiting a mattress shop, we realised what a difference there is in the experience of buying a mattress abroad versus in Malta – the superior quality, the knowledge the salespeople possessed and the sleep trial offered. We decided there and then that we needed to bring the whole experience to Malta,” says director Luke. The young and ambitious team behind Mattress Collection offers mattresses, pillows, storage beds, motorised and designer beds, but mattresses form their core business – specifically, superior foam mattresses made from memory foam and natural latex. “The mattresses we sell are the result of research conducted by spinal professors at the University of Florence regarding the best possible sleep surfaces for a multitude of different bodies and sleep styles,” says Luke, adding that all their mattresses are orthopaedic, ensuring that the spine is straight and aligned during sleep. They come in different firmness options,
varying from very firm to super soft. The mattresses are made in Tuscany and are certified by the Ministry of Health in Italy. While Mattress Collection do stock standard sizes, they also offer the option to customise your mattress to any size, height and shape, and promise to deliver within three weeks. Apart from this, they also offer an impressive full 10-year guarantee, and use natural oils to make their foams, substituting harmful petro-chemicals which could be hazardous to your health – particularly considering the fact that we spend about a third of our lives on our mattress! Speaking of what makes the company stand out, Luke maintains that its strength lies in being innovative, and always upping standards of customer service and product quality. “Locally, we are known for the comfort of our products and superb service, but mostly for our free 30-day sleep trial. There are no gimmicks, so if for whatever reason you are unhappy with the mattress in the first 30 days, we’ll replace it or refund you,” he explains, adding that it is not however, a case of no questions asked. Rather, he continues, “we do ask questions, many questions, in order to see how we can improve our products and
service. We believe we truly stand out not only thanks to our superior products, but also in the way we deal with our customers. We treat each customer with the respect they deserve, and we believe this is what defines us.” Having been in the sleep sector for almost five years, Luke recalls how initially, he viewed it as ‘just a job’, but soon gained a sense of perspective, and realised that “being involved in the development and testing of a product that truly makes a difference to people’s lives is what I wanted to do” – and he hasn’t looked back since. As for the future, the plan is to take it one day at a time. “We’re expanding relationships which we've built on and are progressing with our plans to expand into Europe,” he says. Furthermore, Mattress Collection is now catering for the hotels sector with its new patented Comfur Guest™ Collection range of mattresses. “You won’t find anything like this on the market, particularly our G1 and G2 Models, which give hotels the advantage of offering their guests a choice of firmness for their bed upon booking. They can choose between soft, medium and firm – all in one mattress which takes the housekeeper a minute to adjust!”
Mattress Collection has just embarked on the next step in its journey: opening a new outlet in San Gwann. “When you think about how small our island is, you do question whether more than one outlet is needed, but if you try getting from Ibragg to Zebbug during rush hour, you quickly come to realise that it’s no mean feat!” says Luke. This is why we chose San Gwann and Tal-Balal Road specifically. It’s a main arterial road with no real parking issues.” And while opening the
new shop has definitely had its ups and downs, he admits, it’s also been very exciting. “There are many elements you have to keep in mind, but we're very happy with the outcome.” BB Mattress Collection, Tal-Balal Road, San Gwann; Mdina Road, Zebbug. A Scout’s Honour
Far from being a casual hobby that’s aimed at children of schooling age, the beauty of scouting lies in its ability to bring people together to learn and have fun in the process. Timmy Cutugno from the Scout Association of Malta tells us all about it.
T
he seeds of scouting in Malta were sown over a century ago, and till this day, the practice continues to prove popular and invaluable to children and adults of all ages. Scouting locally took root in 1908, when Malta was part of the British Empire and Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting, was stationed on the island for some time as part of his military duties. “Baden-Powell had made many friends on the island, and when scouting started to spread like wildfire back then, it was
only natural that some of the first scout troops outside of the UK would be set up here,” explains Timmy Cutugno, Communications Officer at the Scout Association of Malta. “Over the years, thousands of Maltese youths have played the game of scouting and treasure its influence on their lives. The rest is history!” Nationally, scouting is spread throughout 40 localities, Timmy explains, and each one follows a common, non-formal educational programme which is age-specific and continually updated to reflect the society that the Association serves, and also in line with World Scouting
aims of ‘Creating a Better World’. “Local membership has grown close to 20 per cent over the last five years which goes to show that scouting continues to be relevant and needed. Currently, we have over 3,300 members composed of 2,700 youths (ages 7 to 25 years) who participate in our programmes and activities. These are supported by more than 650 adult volunteers who undergo training to maintain quality and provide positive learning experiences. We believe that boys and girls join us to participate in fun activities which are age-appropriate, varied and progressive, and which make use of the outdoors, all within the social aspect of a team.” Upholding a presence over so many years is no small feat for an organisation of any size, but the Scout Association of Malta will mark another milestone when, next year, it celebrates 110 years since its inception. How did it succeed in getting this far? “Conscious and proud of its long service within our local communities, the Scout Association of Malta has maintained its scouting aims to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, character, intellectual, emotional, social
and spiritual potential as individuals,” says Timmy. “The secret to our success is the use of the ‘Scout Method’ which focuses on fun, learning by doing and team work, to name a few elements of our approach. Our belief in youth empowerment is translated in our structures. Youths have a say in decisions that affect them, with increasing responsibility also found within the ‘patrol system’, something which Baden-Powell had formulated as a pioneer in this field.” While the emphasis of scouting is enjoyment, it also aims to instil a sense of fulfilment. “Scouting is fun – from the games and activities we organise, to the things we learn together, to the new friendships which are made, scouting is more than just a hobby, it is a positive way of life,” Timmy asserts. “Each of us makes the Scout Promise and is bound by the Scout Law. These foster an environment of brotherhood or sisterhood based on respect, responsibility, self-discipline and trust, all attributes which are important for youths to find their place in society. This apart from useful skills which are learnt as part of our programmes, such as first aid, map reading and outdoor cooking. These adventure skills are important since they
impart resourcefulness and perseverance.” The Scouting Association of Malta is also affiliated with the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM), and has been so for a long time. The WOSM is the largest international scouting organisation with 164 national associations, which collectively have over 40 million participants. “This worldwide scouting family allows us to expose our members to an international dimension through participation in various global and regional events. Various European fora also exist within WOSM to discuss and share best practices in scouting for the benefit of our communities. We are truly one enormous Scout family creating a better world.” BB If you’re willing to make the Scout Promise, uphold the Scout Law and abide by the rules, give it a go. The beauty of scouting is that it is open to all without distinction of gender, origin, race or creed, whereby the Association maintains an equal opportunities policy. Get in touch on join@scout.org.mt for more details on how to join.

FLAIR FOR HAIR
From smouldering colouring techniques to the most sought-after styles, Marie-Claire Grima speaks to top Maltese stylists about the hottest hair trends for your spring update.
A
fter a cold and gloomy winter, the sun is shining once again, bringing with it the urge to freshen up our hair dos for the sunnier seasons ahead. Whether it’s a trim to a reliable haircut or a 360-degree makeover, here’s what the stylists recommend.
HOT HAIRSTYLES
“This year’s styling trends are all about duality, with two contending coiffures,” says Sam Cutajar from Joseph Brincat Ltd. “On one side we have the fierce yet severe stylists, with a tight comb and abundant hair gel as their weapons, while on the other side we have the free spirits, with a bottle of texturising spray and the teasing comb in their hands. If you are the prim and proper sort, take note of the former, and keep your hair slicked back. If you’re a bit more of a free-wheeler, let your hair fly, regardless of whether you keep it loose or pulled back messily.”
work on straight and wavy hair, long or short. Styled with the beach wave technique, you'll end up looking like a supermodel! Conversely, you can always go the opposite direction with the super sleek style, with straight, shiny hair parted down the middle. This style only works if your hair looks healthy, not fried. Another trend worth trying is the half-up half-down hairstyle,” she adds. “It doesn’t require getting a topknot – it’s all about being artfully messy and laid back. The secret is making it work for you, your face shape and your hair texture, so play around with where the ponytail falls on your head and look at it from all angles to find something that makes you feel most confident.” “Long freestyle bobs are also hugely in demand for 2017,” says Robert Micallef from Cortex Ltd. “For up-dos, we’re also incorporating a lot of plaits into the styles, to give them a softer and more modern twist.”
FLAWLESS SHADES
“The shag is huge in 2017,” says Sacha Roberts from Paxanas Salon. “The key to getting a shag haircut that looks cool and modern is to keep the layers longer and proportional to the length. What I love about this silhouette is that the cut really styles itself, and it can
Remember the ombre craze that took the hairdressing world by storm just a few seasons ago? That trend has been replaced by its multi-hued rival, balayage. Its appeal lies in how effortless it looks – in fact, the technique is done by hand, without using foil. “Balayage is definitely the hair colour trend to try out this season,” says Sam. “It gives your tresses that stunning sun-kissed look that comes naturally in summer. The goal is to create soft, naturallooking highlights that look more modern than traditional colouring methods. It’s the most beautiful and natural mix of highlights and shades of blonde, caramel, honey, ash, brunette and others. The colours are applied on sections of hair, not from top to bottom. It’s such a natural-looking hair colour trend that you don’t need to re-touch it very often – in fact skipping on a few hair appointments will only make it look better – lighter ends, darker roots.”

BEAUTY The Beginner’s Guide to Balayage
Robert recommends the balayage technique on long hair parted down the middle, as the smoothness of the hair and the simplicity of the style can really make the colours in the balayage stand out. As for other hair colours, it seems like unusual colours are still having their day in the sun. “Pastel shades and colours, which hopped into the mainstream hair trends over the past two years, will remain very popular this year,” Robert says.
“Rose gold will probably never go away, and you can really take it up a notch as summer approaches,” says Sacha. “I’m also loving lavender, which is a gorgeous take on the trend of grey hair. Lavender and grey don’t create a lot of contrast next to each other, but they complement each other perfectly.”
SALON FRESH
Nothing compares to that straight out of the salon feeling, but there are several products
which you can use to make sure your coif stays picture perfect in between visits to the hairdresser. “CHI silk infusion is a leave-in alcohol-free reconstructing treatment that protects hair from mechanical and environmental damage with pure natural silk, wheat and soy protein,” Sacha explains. She also recommends the Macadamia deep repair mask, a “hair reconstructor that penetrates and rebuilds damaged hair for improved health, shine and elasticity;”
the famed Olaplex product which not only conditions but “rebuilds broken hair bonds,” as well as the Kardashian Beauty K-Body volume foam, from the famously well-groomed Kardashians, a product which “provides amazing lift and texture with touchable support, which is essential for maintaining longlasting, dramatically full styles.”
Balayage is for everyone, no matter what hair type or colour. Blonde balayage ranges from ash to honey to dark blonde, brunette balayage can go from light brown to pure brunette, while redhead balayage mixes copper tones with fiery red hues, sometimes ending with blonde tips. There’s also the kind of balayage used with different shades of pastel colours, making the wearer look absolutely magical. Having a variety of well-blended, natural-looking shades is considerably lowmaintenance, highlighting the texture of the cut in a wearable and creative way. BB

SURFACES TO SUIT ALL NEEDS
Seamless Ltd is one of the leading surface manufacturers in Malta, as well as the primary local agent for a wide portfolio of international brands. These include the South Korean conglomerate Hanwha, whose sister companies include Hanex Acrylic Surfaces and Hanstone Quartz. Hanex acrylic surfaces are used for kitchen surfaces, wall cladding, customised sinks, vanities, baths, shower trays, bars, counters, hospital receptions and many other purposes. The fact that they are made from 100 per cent acrylic means that they can be cut, shaped, moulded, routed and thermoformed in an endless number of shapes and designs. With more than 100 colours to choose from, clients can select a shade that suits their taste, from classic favourites to new neutrals. The material can be repaired and restored to its original condition in the event of any damage.
reception areas, lifts, foyers and other public or private spaces. Both materials are very hygienic and NSF51-certified, a standard applicable to the materials used in the manufacture of food equipment which indicates that they are resistant to pollutants and bacteria. They’re simple and easy to clean – a damp cloth or sponge is enough for every day cleaning, while basic stains can be removed with mild detergents or general purpose cleaners. And they’re long-lasting too – each surface comes with an international warranty of 15 and 10 years respectively.
Similarly, Hanstone Quartz surfaces, which are composed of 93 per cent quartz and 7 per cent resin, are used for kitchens, wall cladding and vanity tops. However, they are so tough that they can also be used for flooring, offices,

Shoes are made for walking but aching feet are not Many people suffer from knee pain, lower-back pain, flat feet, bunion, arch pain, ankle sprains, metatarsalgia, shin pain, Achilles tendonitis and many other problems – but have you ever thought that the problem could be your feet and not your shoes? Orthotics could be the solution! Insoles relieve pain and discomfort by correcting posture and distributing pressure points in the feet, giving more stability and support to the foot and ankle bones, thus alleviating problems in other parts of the body. There are also special orthotic insoles for different sports such as tennis, football, basketball, running and rugby. After consulting with a fully-qualified podiatrist and having a foot scan, a pair of tailor-made insoles can be made to eliminate pain and discomfort by re-aligning your natural foot posture and adding shock absorbency padding. The materials and their density will be chosen accordingly and moulded at the desired position. Some are specially
designed for conditions such as diabetes and rheumatism. Each orthotic is shaped and finished to fit perfectly into the client’s preferred shoes. These orthotic insoles can be easily adjusted and fitted in different types of shoes and sandals. They can also be cleaned easily by using a damp cloth and soap. Take care of your feet, as they can take you far if you treat them right! Amrita Footcare and Wellness Centre — podiatrist and orthotist in attendance.
