Welcome to the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung’s flagship tablet for 2014. Available in 8.4- and 10.5-inch sizes, it comes armed with the best possible specs, including a stunning 2,560 x 1,600 Super AMOLED screen, 12-hour battery life and a slim build that measures just 6.6mm in thickness. In addition, Samsung added a fingerprint reader (which is still a rarity on tablets) and free goodies such as popular magazines, Dropbox storage and a six-month Wall Street Journal subscription. Thanks to its breath-taking detail-oriented display, you can see movies and games pop with vivid colours, dark shadows and stunning contrast on the 10.5 inch display. With four times the pixels of an HDTV, the screen also keeps everything clear by auto-adjusting brightness levels based on where you are and what you’re viewing. An ultra-thin build with a comfortable design makes this tablet difficult to put down. Lightweight and perfect for

travel, it connects seamlessly with other Galaxy products for you to effortlessly share photos and videos from wherever you are. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S is also incredibly family-friendly. With Multi User Mode, everyone in the family can create a private and personalised tablet experience that can be secured with the fingerprint scanner. And for those wanting to keep the little ones entertained, Kids Mode lets you customise playtime and apps with parental controls. The bottom line is that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S is good; really good. With a long battery life, a stunning screen and an especially thin and light design, it earns its place as an excellent piece of kit. The more frequently mentioned food intolerances are linked to gluten and lactose-based foods, and are entirely different to food allergies. An adverse C

found in milk, is normally broken down into simpler sugars by the enzyme lactase present in the small intestine. When enzyme activity is low, the lactose remains undigested and is transported to the large intestine, where it is fermented by bacteria in the gut, giving rise to abdominal pain and flatulence among other symptoms. The quantity of milk and dairy products that leads to symptoms of intolerance varies widely between individuals – some can drink a glass ofmilk without experiencing

discomfort, others can barely tolerate a spoonful of yoghurt or cream. Gluten intolerance has also become rather common, and is an intestinal disorder that occurs when the body can no longer tolerate gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye and barely. The condition, also known as coeliac disease, is permanent and often underestimated. if a sufferer consumes a gluten-containing food, the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged and less able to absorb other essential nutrients.

Pinning the problem down could prove to be a challenge initially – whereas food allergies elicit an immediate reaction from the body, such as shortness of breath or a skin rash, a reaction to food intolerance is more delayed, which could make it harder to identify exactly what is causing the problem.

Symptoms include weight loss, weakness, irritability and abdominal cramps, and withdrawal of gluten based foods alleviates symptoms and improves the state of the intestine. In both cases, the best remedy for a better quality of life is to abstain from eating the foods that cause discomfort altogether. it is also the best way to identify exactly what intolerance you are suffering

from. in the case of lactose intolerant individuals, there are numerous food items that can replace lactose-rich foods that still give the required amount of calcium, ranging from soya, almond and coconut milk, tofuand soya beans, to porridge, parsley and okra. There are also numerous lactose-free yoghurts, soya creams and lactose-free icecreams that are an equally tasty substitute to the real thing. Coeliac patients can turn to a

One of the most common and effective tests is the elimination diet, whereby a single or combination of suspect foods is removed from one’s diet for around two weeks to monitor whether or not symptoms improve or disappear, after which the suspect foods are re-introduced in small and gradual amounts, until a normal consumption pattern is achieved. if symptoms re-occur, then it is easier to identify which foods should be eliminated. A little research, however, will reveal just how many interesting options are out there that are tasty and healthy for coeliac patients. one gluten free grain that is also a current health food craze is quinoa, a pseudo-grain that is more closely related to spinach than to grain plants. raw quinoa could be processed and cooked whole in water, like oatmeal, for a crunchy, nutty-tasting warm cereal or salad base, and quinoa flour could be used to make flatbread. it is a great source of plant-based protein, and also contains lots of iron and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids.

For the Lactose Intolerant: Avoid goat, sheep, cow or buffalo milk, as all milk derived from mammals contains lactose. However, if you’re not too keen on soy milk and are looking for an alternative option, the following dairy- free milks are all packed with natural vitamins and antioxidants. Almond milk, for instance, is filled with magnesium and Vitamin e, while rice milk has almost no saturated fat and plenty of vitamin b12. Coconut milk has a creamy taste and texture, similar to cow’s milk, but has a substantial amount of saturated fat.

OF SHOPPING, SIMSHAR AND THE SILVER SCREEN

Popular TV presenter Clare Agius, who forms part of the feisty Ilsien in-Nisa clan, recently took to the big screen in locally-made movie Simshar. She chats to Jo Caruana about her shopaholic habits! How would you describe your relationship with money? It is as important as the lifestyle I enjoy living – but that lifestyle is quite adaptable. There were times when I lived on next to nothing and others when I could enjoy spending the money I had. The latter would be my preference as I love making the economic wheel turn and watching people benefit from it. What percentage of your life do you spend shopping? I am an impulsive shopper. Most of the year I only choose items from my sponsors, especially seeing as I don’t have hours to spend going round the shops, so this is very convenient. However, there are days, usually when I travel, that I shop till I drop. I don’t tend to travel for shopping but if I do pencil in a shopping day, I enjoy it. Do you think that because something is more expensive it is automatically better? Often, yes. I do believe in quality and that you get what you pay for. However, these days, there is so much competition out there that it makes sense to research your options before committing. Being informed about what you want, where it comes from and the shipping costs all help you get a better deal. What’s a hobby you spend money on? Flying! I absolutely love it.

How would you describe your style? Fashion is important because it can make you feel good. I like it when people say I look nice, rather than that a particular dress looks good on me. I like my clothes to enhance my look and complement my personality. I can go from a simple outfit of jeans, a shirt and boots and feel amazing, to a classy dress that oozes style. What’s the one fashion item you couldn’t live without? Shoes, accessories, jackets and coats! I can never have enough of them and I’m constantly coming up with reasons why I need new shoes or another jacket. Do you collect anything? If you asked that question to my sister, Pauline, she would tell you I collect clothes, but I am getting better at parting with old items, even if they are still in mint condition and haven’t been worn for years. I do love to hold onto things; I guess that comes from years in the theatre and knowing that, eventually, something could make the perfect costume. Other than that I collect photos. Even though life gets really hectic, I put time aside to develop them and put them into frames or albums whenever I can. What’s the best bargain you’ve ever made? My Kia Sportage! It fits my lifestyle perfectly so it was a really good buy.

What is your favourite thing in your whole house? This is a tough one - I asked my husband, Paul, for his input and he suggested the headboard on our bed – simply because I designed it. To be honest, I’m struggling to pick something, although I do love our real wood-burning fireplace. If you won the million euro lottery what would you do with the money? Invest in property, definitely. What three items would you take to your desert island? Another tough one! Something to make fire with, so that I could eat; something to turn salt water into drinking water, and a phone so that I could call for help. Given the choice, would you drink champagne or beer? Lately I’ve been enjoying beer more and more as I seem to be finding champagne too sweet. But perhaps it’s because I have a Brit for a husband! What’s the most money you’ve spent in one go? Buying my home. What would be three things on your ideal celebrity rider? I’m a practical person and I’m not very extravagant – possibly because I’ve learnt things the hard way. However, if I were asked, I would request some still water (oxygenated if possible), fresh fruit and some essential oils for my oil burner. Smells have a powerful effect on me and I love using them to enhance the mood

needed for a particular scene. Basil, chamomile, jasmine and bergamot are among my favourites. If you could present or act alongside anyone, who and where would that be? Now that’s an endless list… I have two favourite male actors and either would do nicely – Leonardo di Caprio and Johnny Depp. Plus, I’d love to be in a mafia movie playing Robert De Niro or Al Pacino’s daughter. As for women, I have quite a list too – Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman. Perhaps I could be the ugly sister of Monica Bellucci or Maria Grazia Cucinotta too! If you could be directed by any director who would it be? No question here: Pedro Almadovar or Martin Scorcese. What has been your favourite part about becoming a mummy? Every day brings a surprise. Whether it’s a new word, new action or a hilarious reaction, my son, Luke, keeps me on my toes. It’s the most dynamic, unravelling experience of humankind. Which has been your favourite outfit ever? Definitely the dress I wore to the red carpet premiere of Simshar a few weeks ago. It was designed by Charles & Ron with material sourced from

Alamango. I absolutely loved it. What do you enjoy most about the summer months? Taking my little one to the beach and turning into creatures of the sea for a short while. What would be your last meal? Well, if I still had an appetite, I’d ask for a real fresh fruit and vegetable juice or a smoothie as a starter – ideally made with berries and leafy greens. Then it would be an amazing Italian pizza, topped with the most exquisite cheese and honey, with walnuts on the side. Finally, dessert would be some 85 per cent-plus dark chocolate. Oh, and a glass of Brunello di Montalcino on the side please. What would you never buy? Never say never. BB

High tech

As more and more technological advancements are made and we become ever more plugged in, it is no surprise that electronics are making their way into the kitchen. From high tech additions like sensor-activated lights that brighten when the kitchen is in use to meat thermometers that alert your smartphone when dinner is done, the kitchen of the future is well and truly here. Another popular add-on is the hands-free faucet – previously popular in eateries and public buildings, it’s now making its way into the private home, which is particularly useful when your hands are sticky from food preparation.

Layered light

A variety of lighting options in modern kitchens reflect its multiple uses – going from a functional work area to a cosy dining space in seconds. With upper cabinets falling out of favour owing to the popularity of open shelving, decorative lighting like scones, chandeliers and pendants are taking centre stage in lieu of undercabinet lighting. IL-MITHNA:

From vibrant cushions and throws to comfortable rugs and decorative curtains, the sky’s the limit when prepping your home for winter. Martina Said discusses some of the latest trends in the colourful world of soft furnishings.

f you’re unsure of splashing out on a statement piece of furniture for your living room, or investing in a new sofa because you’ve grown tired of the same one that’s been a centrepiece for countless years, then say it with sophisticated soft furnishings that could give an all-new look to any room in your home. Switching soft furnishings at the turn of the season is possibly the simplest and most affordable way of giving a room an entirely different look. At the first signs of rain, we’re quick to trade in bright summer colours for mute wintery hues, but the choice of colours for home furnishings for the cold season needn’t be restrained and limited to the usual greys,

blues and reds. Bursts of colour and pattern are not only pleasing to the eye – they make your home more liveable, and offer a distinct personality to every room. People have a strange relationship with colour – much as both men and women are keen to sport bright outfits from head to toe, particularly in summer, their colour choices for the home are often tame and reserved in comparison. Understandably, domestic items are pricey and only changed once every number of years, but colours, prints and patterns are what help bring a home to life at any time of year.

Cushions and throws are perhaps the most versatile soft furnishing items you can get, and this year’s autumn/ winter trends are packing some punch. Ethnic fabrics, upholstery and prints should be at the top of your list, adding a fresh and quirky touch to your home reminiscent of far-away places that could brighten up boring interiors, and somehow ooze a sense of culture especially if they’re authentic. If you’re not too keen on ‘a lot of the same’, then take a mix-and-match approach – explore different shades or patterns of the same colour for some harmony, or go to town with an uncoordinated combination of cushion covers in different prints, fabrics and sizes depending on your preference.

Il-Mithna is one of Malta's longest established soft furnishing retail outlets, offering a large selection of curtain fabrics to suit all budgets, among many other products. A professional in-house sewing service is also available. Now also exclusively available from IlMithna are quality roller blinds from Erfal, featuring creative patterns and a harmonious combination of colours. Free onsite consultations available. Curtains and floor rugs should be part of the change – if your choice of cushions and throws is plain and simple, then perhaps you could explore a more daring option for curtains or sheers. A large damask design exudes a classic elegance that hardly goes out of fashion, and floral designs in various shades of the same colour are also quite timeless. When pairing all

these elements together, try visualising the look you want to achieve before setting out and changing bits and bobs, as the final look should be harmonious and a reflection of your taste and personality. While such furnishings are typically associated with the living and bedroom, the kitchen could also enjoy some special treatment. Placemats

If your kitchen features an island and bar stools, a coordinated set of stylish slipcovers will transform its look, and also help protect the upholstery of the stools. Pin point a colour that is subtle in the overall layout of your kitchen and incorporate it into the covers, either as a solid colour or in a subtle print. The resulting look should be complementary and inviting, as opting for extravagant colours you’re not comfortable with is bound to get on your last nerve sooner than you’d expect.

Portable gas heaters continue to be incredibly popular as they are easy to move from room to room and are efficient in their ability to warm up a room relatively quickly, however, one of the latest heating trends that is economically viable in the long term and possibly the most effective is underfloor heating, which is installed beneath your flooring and heats from the ground upwards, creating a better and more even standard of comfort while using less energy. THE POWER OF RELATIONSHiPS One of the most common doctrines that we hear all too often is 'let the buyer beware'. This is especially true when your client is purchasing a tangible product that has a known or intended use or application. With insurance, what does the client actually do to test out the product one is purchasing? It all hinges on the power and strength of the relationship between the two parties – buyer and seller, client and insurer. We live in a society where people communicate via social media and other forms of communication. But when do we make time to meet people and engage? A friendly voice is at the other end of the telephone line to assist at MIB Insurance Agency Ltd, where building relationships is our goal.

WINDOW SHOPPING

Keep pests under control Cockroaches are scavengers and will spend their lifetime foraging for food and water, happily setting up home anywhere that gives them easy access. In Malta there are two species of cockroach that are conspicuously menacing to human well-being: the American cockroach or wirdiena hamra and the German cockroach or kokrocc tal-faxx. Both species reproduce prolifically and just one fertilised female cockroach can generate thousands of cockroaches within a matter of months. One can prevent the cockroach population in homes and workplaces by never leaving food exposed – not even in your kitchen cupboards; use tight-sealing plastic containers; avoid leaving pet food and water out after dark; do not leave dirty dishes in the sink, particularly overnight; keep your garbage tightly sealed in plastic bags, keep your rubbish bin closed, and dispose of garbage on a daily basis; repair leaky taps or plumbing that might provide fresh water sources and seal up any openings around plumbing. While following these best practices will prevent a cockroach population, it will not eradicate or control an existing one. To eradicate a cockroach infestation, one needs the help of a professional pest control specialist who can undertake targeted eradication, ensuring it is not a hit and miss affair. This knowledge, combined with specialised equipment and biocides will aid the treatment of inaccessible areas typically favoured by cockroaches.

MALTESE RABBIT STEW Serves 4

Ingredients 1.5kg-2kg rabbit 400ml red wine 9 fresh bay leaves 6 garlic cloves, peeled 1 brown onion, finely chopped 3tbsp tomato paste 1.5 litres tomato purée 1 cup water 80ml extra virgin oil Peeled potatoes, cut into chunks Salt and pepper

Strain the rabbit from the marinade and put the liquid aside. Remove the garlic and bay leaves, and pre-heat the oven to 150˚C.

Method Prepare the marinade first by putting 350ml red wine, 3 fresh bay leaves and 4 garlic cloves in a large bowl. Next, remove the rabbit kidneys, livers and front and back legs, cutting each in half and cut the saddle into 5 pieces. Place the rabbit pieces, kidneys and liver in the marinade and refrigerate overnight. Mix several times.

Add the tomato paste and 50ml red wine to the saucepan and cook for a minute to let the ingredients’ flavours fuse. Add the rabbit marinade you kept aside, the tomato purée and water, and mix well. Once all the liquids are well mixed, put into the casserole together with the rabbit meat. Add the remaining bay leaves and potatoes, cover with a lid and bake for around 2.5 hours.

Heat the olive oil in a casserole over medium heat, put in the rabbit meat gently and add some salt and pepper. Cook until golden, then set it aside. Fry the onions and two garlic cloves (finely chopped) in a saucepan until they are golden brown.

A CLOSE SHAVE The list of men’s grooming treatments is becoming as lengthy and wide-ranging as women’s... almost. In keeping with the latest cult of bushy beards for men, Martina Said peeks into the neat world of grooming for men.

T

o say that men have become noticeably more conscious about their appearance is a somewhat accurate statement. One cannot generalise, of course, but the last decade has witnessed a significant shift in male pampering. Whereas in the past many a man’s toiletries cabinet typically consisted of shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream and perfume, it has now grown to include a variety of beauty products, such as cleanser, moisturiser, antiageing cream, eye serum and even a face mask.

an old school barber in the UK, has been grooming men’s beards for a while now, and says that, in keeping with the trend, men who have previously never sported a beard are now trying it out as well. “Men are interested in keeping themselves groomed more than ever before, whether growing a beard or not. For many men, looking their best is important, and I do what is needed for a man to achieve that,” says Antonio.

Among the notable list of trends currently taking the world of men’s fashion by storm – although it is now believed to be reaching a peak and will therefore likely begin its decline within a few years – is that of bushy beards. For some men, growing a nest of facial hair might be a result of pure laziness to shave; for others, it might be a fashion statement.

Keeping a beard neatly groomed requires more than the quick wave of a blade. “There's a difference between a guy with a groomed beard and a guy who just hasn't bothered to shave,” says Antonio. “Beards require professional grooming, and the amount of grooming required depends on the style of beard you have. To maintain a neat beard, you need to keep it trimmed and use a razor daily for a clean line at the top and on the neck.”

Antonio Camilleri of Antonio’s Barber Shop, who trained as

but the return should be worth it. Also, ask your barber or stylist for their trusted advice on the right look for you, both in terms of hair cut and facial hair. Not all men have the same potential to grow a certain length of hair or beard, but all can transform their look with the right style that suits their face shape, and facial hair can both add definition to a soft face, or ruggedness to a childish one. Facial hair trimming can be taken a step further still – when unwanted hairs in the nasal and ear regions start to sprout, it is time to take notice of them. You’d think that that sort of grooming was only required ‘at a certain age’, but young people with excessive hair growth on the face should not ignore it simply because they are young. Simple tools such as a nasal and ear hair trimmer, and tweezers to banish a unibrow, are effective and easy to use, and their value in maintaining a groomed look will almost surely make the purchases worthwhile. PHOTOS BY ALAN CARVILLE

New Twingo is practical and certainly fun…

U

nfortunately for our roads (and perhaps for our sanity too), small cars often tend to be discarded (sometimes fairly, at other times rather unfairly) for being boring, nerdish, box-like or ‘not cool’. The new Renault Twingo is one of the few recently launched city cars that clearly bucks the trend. The Twingo is certainly small but by no stretch of the imagination can it be labelled as boring. I dare say that previous models of the Twingo, especially in its early days, could have fit this not-so-flattering description. But the new Twingo is undoubtedly a different little creature. It ticks all the right boxes for practicality but at the same time is fun to drive and equally fun to own. It is also a very cool car aesthetically. Moving on to the practicality dimension of this brand new city car, the Twingo comes in two models – the EX0.9 and the DY0.9. The EX0.9, which is considered as the entry level, comes equipped with a long list of standard equipment including power steering, front

electric windows, ABS, traction control, air conditioning, LED daytime running lights, control central locking, four airbags, USB, AUX, Bluetooth, smart phone dock and height adjustable seat and steering wheel. Let’s face it – that is a lot of standard equipment for a brand new Twingo that will only set your bank account back €11,900! The EX0.9 delivers 75bhp while the more equipped model, the DY0.9, delivers an impressive 90bhp and comes equipped with climate control, 15-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, lane assist, auto lights and auto wipers, electric mirrors and leather steering wheel – in other words, a long list of standard equipment that is traditionally considered as optional by other car manufacturers. We test-drove the DY0.9 model, that comes equipped with an agile engine that delivers 90bhp, which is a lot for a light and little car like the Twingo. One of the highlights of the new Twingo is its versatile steering – it’s very

difficult to recall driving a car that has such a magnificent turning circle that is so tight – so if your driving abilities have you doing what most politicians are renowned for – u-turns – the Twingo is certainly the car for you. We tried a u-turn while driving the new Twingo as well as parked in a tight space and it performed superlatively – its steering deserves top marks. The car we drove is also extremely agile – the acceleration is very decent and its handling on our not-so-kind roads earns the Twingo many points. The handling on sharp corners

was equally impressive. One last observation on the practical front – although the car is physically small, its interior is spacious enough for drivers or passengers who are vertically or horizontally more expansive than others to sit comfortably. And that is another critical point that also bucks the trend or perception that small cars are for ‘small’ people. BB

You can view the new Renault Twingo at Auto Sales Ltd – Kind’s in Mosta Road, Lija. For more information call T: 2331 1126/31 or visit www. renault.com.mt

BEST BUY VERDICT The New Twingo has lost 10cm in exterior length and gained 33cm in interior length when compared to its predecessor. As highlighted above, its steering is impressive and the new Twingo has a record turning circle of 8.59 metres. Putting the engine in the rear is not the norm for small city cars, that are more renowned for practicality. However, this has given the new Twingo strong features and characteristics that make it stand out from similar cars in the city superminis segments. For as little as €11,900 the new Twingo is certainly a Best Buy!

TRAVEL

A SHORT WAY AWAY Boasting still mild weather and off-peak prices, October is a perfect month for planning a short holiday. Sarah Micallef explores the benefits of short holidays, as well as the top holiday destinations nearby for a quick getaway from the daily grind.

S

ome psychologists believe that taking more frequent, shorter holidays actually makes you happier than one blowout holiday once a year does, and well, it makes a lot of sense. Think about it – you get more frequent holiday buildups, in which you’re excited and looking forward to your holiday, and get to take more breaks from the daily grind than just the once. Besides, it’s scientifically proven that you don’t quite enjoy the seventh day of your holiday quite as much as the first or second – as humans, we’re quick to get used to a certain kind of lifestyle, and relaxation is no different, so the trick is getting away from it all for a short period of time, as often as you can. With this in mind, planning a

short getaway at this time of the year is a fantastic idea. Before we get into the mad rush of pre-Christmas preparations and festive cheer (and a time in which flight prices skyrocket no matter where you choose to go), October is a perfect month to pack up and get away from it all for a few days. In Malta, we’re lucky enough to be very well connected in terms of flights to a wide variety of countries, with some very affordable options for the budget conscious traveller. What’s more, we’re also surrounded by a wealth of beautiful and closely located destinations around Europe, meaning we’re spoiled for choice in terms of a holiday destination. The relatively mild climate throughout the majority of Europe is also a draw at this time of year, making closer destinations particularly

attractive. If you’re after a little road trip in your own car, the catamaran to Sicily is a great option. The Italian island is just a few hours away by sea, and is often underappreciated in its diverse landscape (there’s everything from mountains, the famous volcanic Etna, vineyards and countryside to quaint seaside villages and medieval towns). Mainland Italy, on the other hand, provides a large number of potential holiday escapes, such as the beautiful and historical cities of Rome and Florence, the romantic Venice, the Tuscan wine, villages, the shopping capital Milan, and so much more besides. Greece is also a great option for a short getaway, to visit great locations like Athens, Mykonos and Santorini, depending on whether

you’re after seascapes, history or a quaint village stay. Another country that’s full of Mediterranean charm is Spain, with cities like Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia well worth a visit, be it with your significant other or a group of friends. Moving further up north, France and Belgium are also beautiful and really come into their own at this time of year. Feast on fine French cuisine, walk the streets of cities like Paris or Brussels, or fall in love with the countryside – you’ll be spoiled for choice. Slightly further afield, the United Kingdom is also worthy of consideration, although most destinations require a bit more than a few days to explore. Still, if you’re a fan of city life, a few days of living it up in London or another big city like Leeds or Manchester always go down well, or if you’re more of an

outdoorsy sort, the great British countryside is at your disposal – though it’s bound to get a little muddy! Other fantastic and less explored European destinations include Croatia (which is so much more than its picturesque beaches), Slovenia (don’t miss the breath-taking Lake Bled), and Lithuania (the main cities of Vilnius and Kaunas are a joy to explore), among so many others – it’s truly impossible to name them all. So take my advice, if you’re thinking of getting away for a few days, just do it – remember, it’s good for you! And, being in-between major seasons, you’re likely to get some good deals on travel and accommodation… as if you needed any more excuses. BB
