he story behind Jessica and Pablo’s first meeting is reminiscent of a romantic tale set in an altogether different era, a time when phones and Facebook didn’t exist. “We actually met through Pablo’s aunt, Moira,” says Jessica, 27, an interior and product designer. “We used to work together and she had suggested we meet up for a drink. In other words, it was a blind date!” “With technology and all the dating apps that exist, it was strange going out on a blind date. I literally knew nothing about her,” says Pablo, 33, a business entrepreneur who co-owns and operates Malta Warehouse, Salumeria and Starcross Project. “Her mother, I later found out, wanted to send her sister out as a chaperone with us… imagine that!” It didn’t take too long for the couple to know that they wanted a future together, and Jessica admits that she knew she wanted to marry Pablo from
the first time they met. “The connection was instant,” Pablo agrees, “but I proposed after three years of dating because, as the Maltese proverb goes, ‘fuq tlieta toqghod il-borma’!” As their three-year anniversary rolled around, Pablo believed he had the proposal all figured out, but things didn’t quite go as planned. Jessica explains, “we went to Gozo for our anniversary and after a nice dinner, and unexpected drinks with my grandmother’s brother who we randomly bumped into at the hotel, he casually popped the question when we arrived at our hotel room, in the least romantic way or place possible!” Pablo chimes in to set the record straight. “I had spent a while searching for the perfect ring and made sure I had

it in time for our three-year anniversary on 28th April. We headed to Gozo and drove to many scenic spots – all the while with the boxed engagement ring on me – but they all seemed too cheesy and impersonal. I wanted this to be our moment and not one for spectators,” he recounts. “After dinner, we strolled into the hotel we were staying at. Past the foyer, there was a cosy bar which seemed like a perfect spot, and as we headed to a booth with drinks in hand (to take the edge off a little), we bumped into Jess’s grandmother’s brother and his wife. We spent all evening chatting and drinking, but the ring stayed in my pocket!” Ò

throughout the planning process – he agreed to everything.” There was, however, one thing he was insistent about – “I wanted us to have fun on our special day. We had to take the formal photos, yes, but after that, it was party time!” The couple were hoping to tie the knot on the same date they met, but the venue they wanted wasn’t available, so they settled for the weekend before, which worked out well, as it turned out to be a beautiful day. “We visited one wedding venue, Villa Arrigo, and we loved it. It offered the right mix of inside and outside space, and the food is top class every time,” says Pablo. Ò
Soon after their engagement, the couple set the date for 21st April 2018, with a mass celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church in St Paul’s Bay – an easy choice for Jessica, whose family was born and raised there – followed by a reception at Villa Arrigo. “We planned the wedding two years in advance, which gave us plenty of time,” says Jessica. “I did stress out a few times towards the end, what with writing the invites and preparing the souvenirs, but nothing too crazy.” With most of the preparations in Jessica’s hands, she knew what she wanted to achieve for their wedding day. “Although we didn't have a particular theme, we opted for pastel colours and a touch of succulents to give our wedding a spring and Mediterranean feel. Pablo and I didn’t really have any clashes

“In addition to the food by Osborne Caterers, my brother and I – who run Salumeria, a cheese and charcuterie service for weddings and events – did our best to set up a nice table for my own wedding, and it was definitely well-received, as there was absolutely nothing left.” In line with their overarching choice, Jessica opted for small succulent plants as souvenirs, to remind guests of the unforgettable time they had at their wedding, while the invitations were
custom-made by Bloom Creative, which is co-owned by one of Pablo’s best friends. “It was always my plan to ask him to create our invitations, however, it was amazing that he offered,” says Pablo. “His company did a super job – the invites set the mood of the wedding, and they nailed it.” On the morning of their wedding day, Jessica thought she was calm, but was told afterwards that she kept pacing around while getting ready. ÓThe newlyweds rolled up at the reception in an old, open-top car, which turned out to be a perfect choice in light of the flawless weather they had that day.
The dress
ÓThe bride looked stunning in her gown from Wedding Bells, the second dress she tried on and fell in love with. “I went wedding dress shopping with my mother, sister and mother-in-law, and all of them were in tears when I had the dress on, so I knew it was the one,” says Jessica.

“I felt extremely nervous as soon as we arrived at the church – I can’t even describe what I was feeling, but it was incredible.” Pablo, however, admits that nervous feelings started on the eve. “That’s when it hit me,” he says, although the following morning, things started off with a hiccup – “a treasure hunt for my wedding shoes, to be specific. They were the only thing I had to take care of – Jessica meticulously organised everything else – and I somehow lost
them on our wedding day! Luckily, Mattias, one of the groomsmen, had another pair of smart black shoes which I borrowed, albeit a size too large!” Mass was celebrated by Father Bernard, who is an old friend of Jessica’s sister, and who the couple met socially and instantly connected with. Despite a quick rehearsal a few days prior, Pablo adds that emotions still got the better of him during the ceremony. “Between bawling as my wife-to-be walked up the aisle and a whirlwind of emotions, I was not in the right frame of mind to know when to sit, kneel or crouch. I normally do what people in front of me do, but I had no one to follow this time. I have to thank our videographer, Mauro D’Amato of Ready Set Go, who instructed us with small signals throughout.” The couple celebrated their wedding day with 400 guests, including Pablo’s father’s Dutch side of the family, who came to Malta for the special occasion. Later in the day they kicked off the dancing with a slow number to Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Perfect Symphony’. Ò

“Pablo's mother had suggested it as our first dance song, and since I wanted my cousin, tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens, to sing our first dance together with Petra Micallef, it couldn't have been more perfect,” says Jessica. “It was truly one of the best and most emotional moments of my life.” Pablo agrees, adding that none of the dance was rehearsed, and as everyone gathered around them, Cliff's strong voice gave the crowd chills.

Their wedding day was bliss from beginning to end, but the couple agree that one of the most touching parts of the day was a stop at Burmarrad Cemetery en route to the reception to pay their respects to Jessica’s grandmother and aunt, who both passed away unexpectedly last year. “It was a very sad and difficult time for the family as we are all very close,” says Jessica. “Stopping at the cemetery for a few minutes was special, and I will cherish it for the rest of my life.” Pablo adds, “we laid our wedding flowers next to them, and we felt their presence with us on our special day. They would have loved to be there.” Looking back, Jessica and Pablo say that seeing so many happy faces around them that day was unforgettable, and they couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of everyone involved. “Aside from having to spend the day in Mattias’ size 44s and two pairs of socks, I think the whole day went down like a charm,” says Pablo. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Jessica agrees, “apart from making sure that Pablo had his shoes the day before the wedding!” n

Sunshine after the storm When an unexpected deluge threatened to derail Maya Muscat Azzopardi and Luca Pace’s wedding day last September, the pair took it in their stride, and soon, the sun was out to celebrate right alongside them. Here, they share special memories of their big day with Sarah Micallef.

aya, 26, first met Luca, 25, through her best friend. “They were at sixth form together, and we became friends through her. For the first few months, I had no idea he might like me back, and was convinced he only thought of me as a friend. Then, one thing led to another, and here we are,” she recalls. The couple dated right through university, and felt that getting married was a natural progression of their relationship after graduating and buying a house together. Looking back on the proposal, Maya describes it as everything she ever wanted. “I had dropped so many hints over the previous months – and Luca took them all into consideration,” she laughs. “I wanted a private proposal, and definitely didn’t want him to get down on one knee, because we were going into this as equals.” Luca chose to plan a picnic, where he handed Maya a book. “It was a wonderful book of photos of our relationship, and on the last page, he

asked if I’d like to marry him. I was crying by the first few pages, so could barely bring myself together to say yes!” she recalls happily. And while she admits the proposal wasn’t a huge surprise – the pair had picked out the ring together because she had always wanted to pick her own ring – he had chosen the loveliest way to do it. The date was set for 8th September 2017, with Maya taking care of the majority of preparations and Luca handling the organisation closer to the date. Opting to do without a wedding planner for more flexibility, the couple distributed roles and responsibilities
between their large family and bridal party, and it all worked out beautifully. Looking back on the process, Maya says, “I don’t think we got too stressed – people kept expecting me to be more stressed! The only real moment of panic was when I realised my hairdresser was going to be abroad on the day, which was sorted within a few weeks!” The couple wanted a small, intimate wedding “with lots of fun” and for them, this meant focusing on the venue, food, drink and music, above all the other little details. “It’s easy to get caught up in what other people think of as ‘must-haves’ but it’s your day after all,” Maya says. And while they were pretty much aligned on most of the elements, they do recall disagreeing on one thing: “Luca couldn’t understand why I wanted him to wear a pink tie, not knowing my dress was blush coloured and I had a colour palette in mind!” Indeed, Maya’s vision for the day was clear, and she describes the feeling she wanted as “an overall softness, with lots of greenery and a cohesive colour palette of blues, light pinks and gold touches.” It was this vision that helped her bring everything together, and guided her in choosing suppliers who
understood the vision too. “It was a big factor in choosing our florist, Romano Cassar,” she says, recalling, “after a few minutes of chatting with Debbie, she understood what I was after and started pulling up photos of previous weddings she had done in the same style. The clinching factor was when she brought out a bouquet she had just prepared for a wedding the next day – and it was my dream bouquet!” Ò

The couple chose the Parish Church of Jesus of Nazareth in Sliema for the ceremony, as it holds a special meaning for Maya. “It was the church my nanna used to attend, and both my grandparents and parents got married there,” she says. “My only reservation was that it was in Sliema, and I was worried it would be inconvenient for guests to get to, but once we had chosen The Chophouse as our reception venue, my mind was at rest,” she continues, adding, “it’s a great venue for a smaller guest list, and we knew we could trust their food to be amazing.” The bride stunned in a princess A-line style gown with a beautiful Guipure lace laid over a tulle base, and a blush pink layer of tulle beneath a top layer of white tulle. Looking back on dress shopping, she admits always having a non-white dress in mind, but didn’t go specifically looking for a coloured dress, because the
options are limited. “I lost count of the amount of dresses I tried on, and right when we were told I had tried on all the dresses I had picked out, we remembered a dress on a mannequin we had seen when we walked in. My maid of honour had pointed it out to me, and although I hadn’t been particularly struck by it on the mannequin, I thought it was worth a shot. As soon as the assistant did the zip up, I knew it was the one. I was instantly emotional, and felt so special in it – it was truly the dream dress I didn’t know I was dreaming of!” And as the day rolled round and excitement mounted, there was one small glitch the couple had to prepare for: a September storm. “We had been prepared that it might be rainy on the day, and had been checking the weather in the week leading up to the wedding, but I would never have imagined the deluge that ensued!” Maya laughs. “Since the venue is indoors, I wasn’t too stressed about the rain – my only worry was that we knew most of the guests planned to park at The Point and walk to the church. Still, it was easily sorted by calling Dalton's Garage the day before the wedding and booking minivans to shuttle guests to and from the car park. Ò

Meanwhile, forgoing traditional bridal cars for a modern, reliable option, Luca and his groomsmen, as well as his parents and grandparents, were driven to the church by eCABS. Looking back on the most touching part of the day, Maya recalls being hit by a wave of emotion as her bridesmaids lowered her veil – and she spotted her four brothers and father visibly emotional at the back of the church, waiting for her to walk down the aisle. “I sobbed all the way down the (very long) aisle and any hopes of a lovely shot of me at this stage were ruined by my uglycrying face! Ò
It took the slightest effort, but it was one of the things guests appreciated and kept mentioning to us afterwards!” And while they may have been unlucky with the weather, they were certainly lucky with its timing, she recalls. “It started pouring right after my bridal party and I got on the bus to get to the church, and the sun was out by the time we exited the church after the ceremony.” Still, it certainly made for an eventful bus ride to the church. “On the way, the bus’ wipers stopped working and the driver could barely see – I’ll never forget stopping in Sliema as we were going to be early, and we couldn’t see Manoel Island across the sea at all, because it was raining so heavily,” she says. And while it did mean they didn’t get any good shots of the bridal party walking into the church, there is a silver lining: “we have some hilarious shots of everyone lifting a different part of my dress to make sure it didn’t touch the ground!” she laughs, good naturedly.

It was such a special moment walking down to Luca, and spotting friends and family in the pews as I walked down filled my heart with joy and emotion,” she says. After the ceremony, the pair celebrated and danced the night away with just over 200 guests, which they say “felt like the perfect amount for the intimate wedding we wanted,” and comprised a good balance of family, friends and colleagues. Their first dance came courtesy of their chosen band – local favourites The Travellers. “It felt right to have one of their own songs as our first dance, so we chose Dak Li Int. It’s a special song with a romantic and slow feel, and not commonly used as a first dance,” Maya says, revealing that the pair actually went to a few lessons to practice their first dance beforehand. “We didn’t want an overly choreographed dance, but wanted to feel comfortable with it rather than messing up (or worse, falling) on the day. We actually had to amend it on the day as my dress was too big – but at least we had a good idea of what was coming up and could work around it.” And while she can’t pinpoint a
favourite moment, Maya lists everything from walking down the aisle to dancing with family and friends as special. Above all, the pair agree that what they wanted most out of their wedding was to be surrounded by their loved ones and closest friends, and to have fun with them. “I knew we managed this when everyone kept telling us what fun they had for weeks after the wedding. There’s something special about a smaller wedding, where the feeling of intimacy means people feel more involved and really an essential part of your special day,” she smiles. n

A case study
Fixing your teeth for your big day
A young professional wished to improve her smile. She was very conscious about the midline, which had shifted to one side, showing an asymmetrical smile. Studies show that when the midline shift is so pronounced, it can be picked up by most people. This shift was exacerbated by the low attachment of upper lip fibres which attach the lip to the gum, as well as two genetically missing teeth. In the past, the case was restored with a fixed bridge, but rightly so, the patient remained unhappy with the overall result. The patient was treated with orthodontics (braces), oral surgery and cosmetic dentistry spanning over two years. The result is not perfect, but a large improvement. One of the most important aspects in our line of work is for the patient to walk out happy. At times, we may not be fully satisfied with the results, but if the patient is happy, everyone is happy. Often, more than one dental discipline is required. This is quite a common scenario. In fact, these cases might not look too complicated and would very often achieve a satisfactory result with routine dentistry. However, very few of today’s patients are happy with a satisfactory result. Most patients are after very good results, which tick all their priority boxes, leaving them very happy and confident with their new smile. In order to achieve
these optimal results, one must start off with an in-depth consultation with the patient. It is important for us practitioners to find out exactly what the patient likes and dislikes about their current smile, and what result they wish to achieve. Once those questions are answered, practitioners may devise a treatment plan involving one or more dental disciplines. More often than not, more than one treatment plan are proposed, and they may vary with the duration of treatment, expenses, as well as the nature of the dentistry required. The main difference between treatments will always be the aesthetic result. Usually though, the more complicated treatment plan with longer treatment time and higher expenses will deliver the better results. n

The home kit This method involves taking impressions of your teeth and producing thin plastic trays to fit onto them. These trays fit your upper and lower teeth like a glove. Bleaching gel is then placed in the tray and when the tray is worn, the bleach dispersers on the tooth surface. This is left in contact for four to seven hours during the day or at night for three to seven days. Advantages } Relatively cheap } Good efficiency } The trays are yours to keep, so on buying new bleach, these may be used indefinitely } With sensitive teeth, you may pace the bleaching load by skipping one to two days in between bleaching, so as to give the teeth a break. During those days, you may also place desensitising gel instead of bleach in the tray to alleviate any sensitivity. Disadvantages } Excessive bleach may leave the tray and irritate the gums } The trays may be uncomfortable for
Clinical laser tooth whitening This method of whitening your teeth utilises a laser/light system. The patient lies in the dental chair with a light fixed onto his/her dentition. The mouth and gums are isolated with cotton-wool and isolation dam material respectively, whilst the skin and lips are protected with sun-cream. The eyes are also protected with specific safety glasses, preventing any damage. Bleaching gel is placed on the teeth and when the light is switched on, the synergistic effect of the lamp with the bleach causes the teeth to whiten. Advantages } Very quick: 45-60 minutes } Very good results } No need to wear any bleaching trays. Disadvantages } Slightly more expensive than the home kit } May be too strong for young patients } Teeth may be sensitive for 24 hours after the procedure } Must repeat procedure every now and again to maintain bleaching colour } Uncertain what tooth colour the teeth will whiten to.
Veneering method The method of veneering your teeth is the only form of tooth whitening that does not require any maintenance whitening procedures. It is also the form whereby you are guaranteed to whiten your teeth to whichever your preferred degree of whiteness is; to whichever tooth colour you prefer. This method involves minimal tooth filing and fixing of very thin porcelain facets onto your teeth. Advantages } The colour is exactly your chosen colour } Simultaneous tooth straightening as well as the whitening } Colour doesn’t change, therefore no need for a maintenance programme. Disadvantages } Expensive } Albeit minimal, it involves some tooth filing } De-bonding or fracture of veneers } Irreversible. The whitest natural colour is a B1. The whitest available is a BL1HT (bleaching shade with high translucency). This is four shades whiter than the whitest. It is important to know what products and methods are out there, as many phony unprofessional methods of tooth whitening are also for sale on the high street. These may seriously damage your teeth. From zip-lining to glow-worms, Lord of the Rings fans Anthea and Christopher Pisani enjoyed a truly unparalleled honeymoon in New Zealand. Here they share their special memories with Jo Caruana.
S
ometimes there is a destination that’s absolutely perfect for you – and when Anthea and Christopher Pisani tied the knot last year, they knew New Zealand would be the perfect place for them to start their new life together. After all, they had long been enthralled by the stories they heard and photos they saw of the country. To them, it was a destination that offered a mix of everything they wanted – adventure, moments of relaxation, new experiences and a good dose of Lord of the Rings scenery. “We both wanted our honeymoon to be memorable – a oncein-a-lifetime experience,” Anthea smiles. “From the outset, New Zealand presented a vast selection of activities, so we could personalise our itinerary to our liking and take things at our own pace. We were also lucky to have an excellent travel agent at Royal Travel, who quickly picked up on what we wanted and really exceeded our expectations.” The couple began their journey in Auckland, where they hired a car. “We then drove down from the North to the South Island, stopping at various towns and villages along the way,” Christopher explains. “We spent some time in Rotorua, with its thermal springs and fascinating Maori culture, before carrying on to the Hobbiton Movie Set to see The Shire and having ginger at the Dragon’s Inn. They were all fabulous highlights, as were the Waitomo glow-worm caves, where we abseiled into the cave, went in deeper via a zipline, floated in the underwater river while gazing at the glow-worms, and climbed back up from a waterfall.” Anthea and Christopher then drove to Wellington to catch the ferry to the South Island. They stopped at Blenheim in the

Marlborough region, which is famous for its seemingly-endless vineyards, before making their way to Franz Josef. “That was quite a thrilling experience,” Christopher grins, “as we explored the glacier and then relaxed in the hot pools.” Next up was Queenstown, with its remarkable nightlife, and before a wine tour, a trip to stunning Doubtful Sound in the Fiordland and, obviously for this Lord of the Rings-loving duo, a tour that took them to magical Glenorchy. “Finally, on our way back up to the South Island, we stopped at Lake Tekapo where we went star-gazing at an observatory before heading to Christchurch. One of our last adventures was whale-watching in Kaikoura,” Anthea says. Ò

Looking back, they both agree it was an astonishing journey – although they say travelling around the island was actually very easy, especially when driving. “The roads are long and well-kept, and the scenery is breath-taking – ranging from fields with sheep grazing in them to lakes, rivers, mountains capped with snow, hills, flatlands and the ocean. We were fascinated by the various shades of green along the way. The ever-changing weather adds to its beauty. For example, the sunshine defines the mountains better, but cloudy weather gives them an aura of mystery.” However there was one slightly challenging moment that stands out for them both. “We got stranded on the Franz Josef Glacier – shortly after telling our group that it was our first time on ice. During our hike on the glacier, our guides were informed that the weather had started to take a turn for the worse. While waiting for our helicopter to pick us up to take us down the glacier, we were astonished to see it turn around and head back to base. As their helicopters needed direct vision to land, it was deemed unsafe because of the clouds. So we were stuck there… on a glacier! As it started to snow and get colder, we sat under a makeshift tent as our guides made plans to pitch tents for the night. To this day we are still unsure whether we would have preferred heading back to our warm beds, or be the first group to sleep on the glacier. After some time, the weather cleared for long enough for us to be evacuated from the glacier, and we made an emergency landing in the valley. It’s a funny – and lovely – memory in retrospect!” Asked about their favourite moments, both Anthea and Christopher wonder where to start. “The dramatic scenery, the tasty food, the friendly and welcoming people, the unique
Maori culture and the adventure activities all contributed,” they say. “We shared a lot of laughs; from Chris performing the Haka (traditional Maori dance), to falling over each other in the underwater caves, trying out new food and wines, and meeting new people and getting to know their traditions.” So… would they go back? “In a heartbeat,” Anthea enthuses. “A million times yes. There is so much to do that we can fill up another entire trip but there are definitely some places we would like to revisit. “Our honeymoon helped us to grow as individuals and as a couple. It widened our horizons, yet at the same time made us look more closely at each other. We will always carry a part of New Zealand in our heart,” she adds. n

Of comfort, style and practicality
This charming house of character in Naxxar exemplifies the very essence of village life in Malta – instantly serene as you walk in, shutting the door to the outside world feels like leaving your troubles there too. Sarah Micallef pays the owners a visit. P h otos by A la n C arv i ll e

astefully renovated and lovingly styled by its young owners, who moved in a year ago, it’s clear that this house of character in Naxxar has come a long way since it was originally built. As you walk through the entrance hall, you’re immediately faced with a central courtyard which typifies homes of the era. There’s a study to the right, followed by a guest bathroom beneath the stairs, and to the left, the kitchen and dining room lead on to a spacious living area, which opens up to a garden at the back of the house. Upstairs, up
a charming patterned staircase, one finds two bedrooms, a bathroom and the main bedroom suite, which comprises a walk-in wardrobe leading on to the main bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The owners bought the house back in January 2016, and upon their first visit, the impressive fireplace in the living room was one of the first things to catch their eye, and help seal the deal. “When we saw it we were amazed,” they enthuse. The entire living space leading out into the garden was
a special feature that really attracted them, they add, “the walls also have a lot of character, in fact, we’re reluctant to hang too many things on them.” Apart from the traditional features of the house, like the arches and beams, the pair were also taken with the little enclaves characteristic of Maltese character homes, which make the space cosy and unique. Looking back on the state it was in when they bought it, they explain, “it was liveable, but decorated in a dated style that was in need of an update.” Ò

With the house already having been converted, it didn’t need much in terms of construction, but the new owners did make a few alterations to the main bedroom, extending the room out across an existing terrace, and to the doors leading out to the garden, opened up to let more light in, and create a better connection between inside and outside. “We wanted to create a feeling of space and light,” they say, explaining that the initial idea was to open up the doors to the garden completely, so as to have wide sliding doors that would give an airy feel. “That didn’t materialise, but we now agree that the final effect actually works out better, and there’s more than enough light. There’s more character to it too,” they add. Upstairs, the main construction project was the main bedroom, which originally formed part of the terrace. “There was a bridge extending from the corridor upstairs leading on to a terrace,
but we thought it was useless to have such a large terrace when we already had the garden as an outdoor space, so we decided to extend the bedroom out onto it. The existing bedroom became our walkin wardrobe, and the extension houses the bedroom and ensuite,” they explain. Apart from these interventions, they also replaced all the tiles and changed the apertures, internal doors, kitchen and light fittings. “Lighting was very important to us, so we invested a lot of time and energy into planning it out,” they maintain. Asked what they most wanted to achieve out of the space, the pair state that it was important for them to create a mix of uses. “We love entertaining and having people over, so we wanted to create this open space where we could do that – the fact that the kitchen, dining, living and garden lead onto each other really lends itself well to parties and gatherings. Ò

I love sitting across from the fireplace and looking out into the garden outside with a cup of tea – that’s priceless. At the same time, we wanted it to be comfortable and practical for us to live in day to day. It’s also great in winter because it’s really cosy, and equally great in summer because of the outdoor area – it really ticked all the boxes for us.” As is often the case with couples, when it came to doing it up, he proved to be the more practical of the two, while she is more aesthetically minded. They do admit that there were some clashes, which, in the end, were smoothed over with a compromise. “I’d want something because it’s really nice, and he’d say no, because it wouldn’t necessarily be useful, or we’d be afraid of ruining it! So everything we bought we did knowing that if anything were to happen to it, it’s not the end of the world, especially since we have a dog,” she says. And, in what is perhaps the most impressive part of the story, the entire process took five months to achieve – something that certainly had a lot to do with one of the owners being an

engineer, who managed the project from start to finish. “The first thing you have to do is open an excel sheet and outline the costs,” he begins to explain. “Once you’ve got your budget set, you go into procurement, which includes sourcing the people and products you need, followed by any construction work and wet trades, namely bathrooms and tiling, followed by M&E and so on.” His main word of advice is to chase every day, sometimes twice and even three times. “You have to visit and oversee the works constantly, but more importantly, you have to do your research into every task and process, just so you know how things are meant to be done – this helps make sure that no corners are cut. Finally, if you want to finish in time, you have to make sure that every foreseeable problem is solved before it comes up – that requires a lot of time and thought. You have to constantly be on the ball!” And once the heavy lifting was over,
it was time to focus on décor. “We were aiming for an industrial aesthetic, so we started off with that style in mind,” they say, pointing out elements like the Lampe Gras light fittings and solid wood table, “but we didn’t stick to any specific design style per se.” Ò

Indeed, by incorporating a blend of contemporary elements and rustic pieces – which one of the owners enjoys restoring herself – the couple has achieved an eclectic style that’s unique to them and their personalities. Speaking of her newly-acquired restoration hobby, the owner, whose own paintings also adorn a number of the walls and surfaces here, explains, “it started with an old table which used to belong to my aunt. She’s in her 80s now, and remembers it in the house ever since she was a child. I always had this plan to paint and restore it, and finally decided to give it a go. There were a few issues when I decided to paint the inside of a drawer and it stuck, but other than that I really enjoyed it, and it gives you such satisfaction when it’s done,” she smiles. And now that they’ve been living in their beautiful home for a year, I ask, what is their favourite part of the house? For her, it’s the kitchen and dining area, leading out into the living room. “I love sitting across from the fireplace and looking out into the garden outside with a cup of tea – that’s priceless. I also really enjoy pottering
around in the garden and checking on the plants. It’s a very meditative space,” she says. For him meanwhile, ever the practical one of the pair, it’s the ensuite bathroom. “I really like the design and what we managed to achieve with it. In our previous property, the ensuite was something that I really hated, which is why we made this one triple the size!” he laughs. “I also love the kitchen,” he adds, “the design of it is very practical.” And while they’re happy with what they’ve achieved, as with every home project, you’re never really quite done! The pair have a few projects lined up for the near and not-so-near future, starting with the garden. “This summer, we’re focusing on finishing off the garden. We’re also looking forward to finishing off the other two bedrooms,” they say, as well as doing up the courtyard, as “at the moment, we just have a few plants and herbs we use for cooking out there.” Meanwhile, for the long term, they add, “we’d eventually like to build another floor incorporating a roof garden upstairs, and have the permits in place for when we decide to go for it – it won’t be for the time being though!” n

Marisa and John Zammit have recently celebrated their 43-year wedding anniversary. They speak to Rebecca Anastasi about their special day on a spring Easter Sunday – and about the secret to a long-lasting marriage.

arisa and John Zammit have known each other since they were very young, playing in St Paul’s Bay, where both their families had summer homes. They swam in the same bays, hung out in the same places and were close friends throughout their childhood and teens. “I used to share practically everything with Marisa,” John says, “and one day it clicked.” So, on the cusp of adulthood, John decided to suggest a change. “I was 18 and he was 20 when he asked me to go out for a drink,” Marisa smiles. And that was that. Two years later, they got engaged (and “we had two engagement parties!”) and in the morning of 30th March 1974, when Marisa was 22 and John was 24, they tied the knot in a ceremony at the Capuchins Church in Floriana. “We had a very big wedding, with around 800 people,” Marisa recalls. As was the tradition at the time, Marisa’s
parents took care of all the wedding preparations. “It wasn’t stressful at all,” John jokes, going on to describe the one thing they did book themselves: the reception at The Palms in St Julian’s. The wedding dress also involved some planning: Marisa and her mother trawled fabric stores in search of the right material. The gown was custom-made by a dress-maker, who also helped the bride choose the style of the dress. There were only two things Marisa wanted. “I really wanted a long train, since it looks lovely walking into the church, and I asked for buttons at the back – I always wanted those buttons,” she remembers. But, all did not go exactly according to plan on the big day. “The dress-maker had to come down from Rabat with the dress on my wedding day but, by 9:30am, she still hadn’t arrived, and the mass was starting at 11am. There were no mobile phones in those days, so we didn’t know what had happened,” Marisa says. Luckily, the dress-maker, who had gotten stuck behind a procession, made it just in time, and Marisa walked down the aisle surrounded by the couple’s family and friends. John had a bit of an easier time in the run-up to the wedding, which meant he could really savour the day. “I was really relaxed,” he says. “When Paul, the best man, came for me, I was a bit anxious since this was a decision which was going to affect my whole life but, otherwise, I was very relaxed at the wedding. People told me I wouldn’t eat anything at the wedding, but I tasted everything!” he

laughs. He looks back fondly on the day, describing Marisa as “the jewel in the crown of our wedding,” and it is evident that those feelings have not faded. That day was not only memorable for the couple, but it was the start of something deeper. They refer to 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, quoting the line “love is patient, love is kind”, a philosophy they have placed at the centre of their marriage over the years. Their faith has sustained them through all the natural tribulations any couple experiences throughout their relationship, strengthening and nurturing it. “That is the basis of a good marriage: love is patient; it’s giving ourselves to each other,” John says. Among the highlights of their marriage, they say, were definitely the births of their four children, and in a moving statement, John describes what he believes is the lynchpin of a happy family life. “The best thing a father can do for his children is love their mother,” he says. And that love the couple have for each other still seems to be as strong as on that spring day when they said, ‘I do’. n
